Search

Scientific writing is an important skill for a career as a professional astrophysicist. Very few researchers, however, receive any formal training in how to write scientific research papers of high quality in an efficient manner. This paper (Paper I) is the first of a two-part self-help guide in scientific writing to address this skills gap. Paper I focuses on planning your academic research paper in astronomy. We discuss how to crystallise the ideas that underlie a research project, analyse how the paper can be constructed considering the audience and the chosen journal, and give an overview of the publishing process. Paper II is a detailed description of the different sections that make up a research paper in astronomy and shares the best practice in how to write in English. WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. Modern astronomical observations give unprecedented access to the physical properties of nearby galaxies, including spatially resolved stellar populations. However, observations can only give a present-day view of the Universe, whereas cosmological simulations give access to the past record of the processes that galaxies have experienced in their evolution. To connect the events that happened in the past with galactic properties as seen today, simulations must be taken to a common ground before being compared to observations. We emulate data from the MaNGA survey, which is the largest integral field spectroscopic galaxy survey to date with its 10,000 nearby galaxies of all types. For this, we use the cosmological simulations TNG50 to generate MaNGIA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies with IllustrisTNG Astrophysics), a mock MaNGA sample of similar size that emulates observations of galaxies for stellar population analysis. We choose TNG galaxies to match the MaNGA sample selection to limit the impact of selection effects. We produce MaNGA-like datacubes from all simulated galaxies, and process these with the pyPipe3D analysis code. This allows us to extract spatially resolved stellar maps. This first paper presents the approach to generate the mock sample and provides an initial exploration of its properties. We show that the stellar populations and kinematics of the simulated MaNGIA galaxies are overall in good agreement with observations. Specific discrepancies, especially in the age and metallicity gradients in low- to intermediate-mass regimes and in massive galaxies' kinematics, require further investigation. We compare our results to other attempts to mock similar observations, all of smaller data sets. In the centres of the Milky Way and M83, the global environmental properties thought to control star formation are very similar. However, M83's nuclear star formation rate (SFR), as estimated by synchrotron and H-alpha emission, is an order of magnitude higher than the Milky Way's. To understand the origin of this difference we use ALMA observations of HCN (1-0) and HCO+ (1-0) to trace the dense gas at the size scale of individual molecular clouds (0.54", 12pc) in the inner ~500 pc of M83, and compare this to gas clouds at similar resolution and galactocentric radius in the Milky Way. We find that both the overall gas distribution and the properties of individual clouds are very similar in the two galaxies, and that a common mechanism may be responsible for instigating star formation in both circumnuclear rings. Given the considerable similarity in gas properties, the most likely explanation for the order of magnitude difference in SFR is time variability, with the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) currently being at a more quiescent phase of its star formation cycle. We show M83's SFR must have been an order of magnitude higher 5-7 Myr ago. M83's `starburst' phase was highly localised, both spatially and temporally, greatly increasing the feedback efficiency and ability to drive galactic-scale outflows. This highly dynamic nature of star formation and feedback cycles in galaxy centres means (i) modeling and interpreting observations must avoid averaging over large spatial areas or timescales, and (ii) understanding the multi-scale processes controlling these cycles requires comparing snapshots of a statistical sample of galaxies in different evolutionary stages., 31 pages, 22 figures, accepted by MNRAS

J.; Yates, J.; Uttley, P., We present the second data release of high-resolution (≤0.2 arcsec) 1.5-GHz radio images of 177 nearby galaxies from the Palomar sample, observed with the e-MERLIN array, as part of the Legacy e-MERLIN Multi-band Imaging of Nearby Galaxies Sample (LeMMINGs) survey. Together with the 103 targets of the first LeMMINGs data release, this represents a complete sample of 280 local active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive galaxies (H ii galaxies and absorption line galaxies, ALG). This large program is the deepest radio survey of the local Universe, ≳1017.6 W Hz-1, regardless of the host and nuclear type: we detect radio emission ≳0.25 mJy beam-1 for 125/280 galaxies (44.6 per cent) with sizes of typically ≲100 pc. Of those 125, 106 targets show a core which coincides within 1.2 arcsec with the optical nucleus. Although we observed mostly cores, around one third of the detected galaxies features jetted morphologies. The detected radio core luminosities of the sample range between ∼1034 and 1040 erg s-1. LINERs and Seyferts are the most luminous sources, whereas H ii galaxies are the least. LINERs show FR I-like core-brightened radio structures while Seyferts reveal the highest fraction of symmetric morphologies. The majority of H ii galaxies have single radio core or complex extended structures, which probably conceal a nuclear starburst and/or a weak active nucleus (seven of them show clear jets). ALGs, which are typically found in evolved ellipticals, although the least numerous, exhibit on average the most luminous radio structures, similar to LINERs. © 2020 The Author(s). We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope observations of globular clusters (GCs) in six ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Coma cluster, a sample that represents UDGs with large effective radii ($R_{\rm e}$), and use the results to evaluate competing formation models. We eliminate two significant sources of systematic uncertainty in the determination of the number of GCs, $N_{\rm GC}$ by using sufficiently deep observations that (i) reach the turnover of the GC luminosity function and (ii) provide a sufficient number of GCs with which to measure the GC number radial distribution. We find that $N_{\rm GC}$ for these galaxies is on average $\sim$20, which implies an average total mass, $M_{\rm total}$, $\sim$ $10^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$ when applying the relation between $N_{\rm GC}$ and $M_{\rm total}$. This value of $N_{\rm GC}$ lies at the upper end of the range observed for dwarf galaxies of the same stellar mass and is roughly a factor of two larger than the mean. The GC luminosity function, radial profile and average colour are more consistent with those observed for dwarf galaxies than with those observed for the more massive ($L^*$) galaxies, while both the radial and azimuthal GC distributions closely follow those of the stars in the host galaxy. Finally, we discuss why our observations, specifically the GC number and GC distribution around these six UDGs, pose challenges for several of the currently favoured UDG formation models., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The outskirts of galaxies have been studied from multiple perspectives for the past few decades. However, it is still unknown if all galaxies have clear-cut edges like everyday objects. We address this question by developing physically motivated criteria to define the edges of galaxies. Based on the gas density threshold required for star formation, we define the edge of a galaxy as the outermost radial location associated with a significant drop in either past or ongoing in-situ star formation. We explore $\sim$1000 low-inclination galaxies with a wide range in morphology (dwarfs to ellipticals) and stellar mass ($10^7 M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{12}M_{\odot}$). The location of the edges of these galaxies ($R_{\rm edge}$) are visually identified as the outermost cut-off or truncation in their radial profiles using deep multi-band optical imaging from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project. We find this characteristic feature at the following mean stellar mass density which varies with galaxy morphology: $2.9\pm0.10\,M_{\odot}$/pc$^2$ for ellipticals, $1.1\pm0.04\,M_{\odot}/$pc$^2$ for spirals and $0.6\pm0.03\,M_{\odot}/$pc$^2$ for present-day star forming dwarfs. Additionally, we find that $R_{\rm edge}$ depends on its age (colour) where bluer galaxies have larger $R_{\rm edge}$ at a fixed stellar mass. The resulting stellar mass--size plane using $R_{\rm edge}$ as a physically motivated galaxy size measure has a very narrow intrinsic scatter ($\lesssim 0.06$ dex). These results highlight the importance of new deep imaging surveys to explore the growth of galaxies and trace the limits of star formation in their outskirts., 22 pages (including appendix), 11 Figures, accepted for publication in A&A. We present the results of a four-month, spectroscopic campaign of the Wolf-Rayet dust-making binary, WR137. We detect only small-amplitude, random variability in the CIII5696 emission line and its integrated quantities (radial velocity, equivalent width, skewness, kurtosis) that can be explained by stochastic clumps in the wind of the WC star. We find no evidence of large-scale, periodic variations often associated with Corotating Interaction Regions that could have explained the observed intrinsic continuum polarization of this star. Our moderately high-resolution and high signal-to-noise average Keck spectrum shows narrow double-peak emission profiles in the Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma, HeII6678 and HeII5876 lines. These peaks have a stable blue-to-red intensity ratio with a mean of 0.997 and a root-mean-square of 0.004, commensurate with the noise level; no variability is found during the entire observing period. We suggest that these profiles arise in a decretion disk around the O9 companion, which is thus an O9e star. The characteristics of the profiles are compatible with those of other Be/Oe stars. The presence of this disk can explain the constant component of the continuum polarization of this system, for which the angle is perpendicular to the plane of the orbit, implying that the rotation axis of the O9e star is aligned with that of the orbit. It remains to be explained why the disk is so stable within the strong ultraviolet radiation field of the O star. We perform a "fossil record" analysis for ~800 low-redshift spiral galaxies, using STARLIGHT applied to integral field spectroscopic observations from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey to obtain fully spatially-resolved high-resolution star formation histories (SFHs). From the SFHs, we are able to build maps indicating the present-day distribution of stellar populations of different ages in each galaxy. We find small negative mean age gradients in most spiral galaxies, especially at high stellar mass, which reflects the formation times of stellar populations at different galactocentric radii. We show that the youngest (10^{9.5} years), again with a strong dependence on stellar mass. By interpreting the radial profiles of "time slices" as indicative of the size of the galaxy at the time those populations had formed, we are able to trace the simultaneous growth in mass and size of the spiral galaxies over the last 10 Gyr. Despite finding that the evolution of the measured light-weighted radius is consistent with inside-out growth in the majority of spiral galaxies, the evolution of an equivalent mass-weighted radius has changed little over the same time period. Since radial migration effects are likely to be small, we conclude that the growth of disks in spiral galaxies has occurred predominantly through an inside-out mode (with the effect greatest in high-mass galaxies), but this has not had anywhere near as much impact on the distribution of mass within spiral galaxies., 17 pages, 15 figures (including two animated figures which require Adobe Reader or similar to properly view). We combine ALMA and MUSE-NFM (narrow field mode, with full four-laser adaptive optics correction) data at 0.15 arcsec spatial resolution of the archetypical AGN-starburst “composite” galaxy NGC 7130. We present the discovery of a small 0″.2 (60 pc) radius kinematically decoupled core or small bi-polar outflow, as well as a larger-scale outflow. We confirm the existence of star-forming knots arranged in an 0″.58 (185 pc) radius ring around the Seyfert 1.9 nucleus, previously observed from UV and optical Hubble Space Telescope and CO(6-5) ALMA imaging. An extinction map derived from the MUSE data highlights the regions of enhanced CO emission as clearly seen in the ALMA data. We determine the position of the nucleus as the location of a peak in gas velocity dispersion. A plume of material extends towards the NE from the nucleus until at least the edge of our field of view at 2″ (640 pc) radius which we interpret as an outflow originating in the AGN. The plume is not visible morphologically, but is clearly characterised in our data by emission lines ratios characteristic of AGN emission, enhanced gas velocity dispersion, and distinct non-circular gas velocities. Its orientation is roughly perpendicular to the line of nodes of the rotating host galaxy disk. An 0″.2-radius circumnuclear area of positive and negative velocities indicates a tiny inner disk or a small bipolar outflow, only observable when combining the integral field spectroscopic capabilities of MUSE with full adaptive optics.

Writing is a vital component of a modern career in scientific research. But how to write correctly and effectively is often not included in the training that young astronomers receive from their supervisors and departments. We offer a step-by-step guide to tackle this deficiency, published as a set of two papers. In the first, we addressed how to plan and outline your paper and decide where to publish. In the current second paper, we describe the various sections that constitute a typical research paper in astronomy, sharing best practice for the most efficient use of each of them. We also discuss a selection of issues that often cause trouble to writers, from sentence to paragraph structure, the `writing mechanics' used to develop a manuscript. Abdurro’uf et al., This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. AGN are a key ingredient for understanding galactic evolution. AGN-driven outflows are one of the manifestations of feedback. The AO mode for MUSE at the VLT permits to study the innermost tens of parsecs of nearby AGN in the optical. We present a detailed analysis of the ionised gas in the central regions of NGC 7130, an archetypical composite Seyfert and nuclear starburst galaxy. We achieve an angular resolution of 0.17$^{\prime\prime}$ (50 pc). We performed a multi-component analysis of the main ISM lines and identified nine kinematic components, six of which correspond to the outflow. The outflow is biconic and has velocities of a few $100\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ with respect to the disc. We decompose the approaching side of the outflow into a broad and a narrow component with typical velocity dispersions below and above $\sim200\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, respectively. The blueshifted narrow component has substructure, in particular a collimated plume aligned with the radio jet, indicating that it may be jet-powered. The redshifted lobe is composed of two Narrow Components and a Broad Component. An additional redshifted component is seen outside the main outflow axis. Line ratio diagnostics indicate that the outflow gas in the main axis is AGN-powered whereas the off-axis component has LINER properties. The ionised gas mass outflow rate is $\dot{M}=1.2\pm0.7\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ and the kinetic power is $\dot{E}_{\rm kin}=(2.7\pm2.0)\times10^{41}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$, which corresponds to $F_{\rm kin}=0.12\pm0.09\%$ of the bolometric AGN power. The combination of high angular resolution integral field spectroscopy and a careful multi-component decomposition allows a uniquely detailed view of the outflow in NGC 7130, illustrating that AGN kinematics are more complex than traditionally derived from less sophisticated data and analyses. We investigate the nature of the relations between black hole (BH) mass (M BH) and the central velocity dispersion (σ) and, for core-Sérsic galaxies, the size of the depleted core (R b). Our sample of 144 galaxies with dynamically determined M BH encompasses 24 core-Sérsic galaxies, thought to be products of gas-poor mergers, and reliably identified based on high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging. For core-Sérsic galaxies, i.e., combining normal-core (R b R b ≳ 0.5 kpc), we find that M BH correlates remarkably well with R b such that M BH ∝ R b 1.20 ± 0.14 (rms scatter in log M BH of Δrms ∼ 0.29 dex), confirming previous works on the same galaxies apart from three new ones. Separating the sample into Sérsic, normal-core and large-core galaxies, we find that Sérsic and normal-core galaxies jointly define a single log-linear M BH–σ relation M BH ∝ σ 4.88±0.29 with Δrms ∼ 0.47 dex; however, at the high-mass end, large-core galaxies (four with measured M BH) are offset upward from this relation by (2.5–4) × σ s, explaining the previously reported steepening of the M BH–σ relation for massive galaxies. Large-core spheroids have magnitudes M V ≲ −23.50 mag, half-light radii R e ≳ 10 kpc, and are extremely massive, M * ≳ 1012 M ☉. Furthermore, these spheroids tend to host ultramassive BHs (M BH ≳ 1010 M ☉) tightly connected with their R b rather than σ. The less popular M BH–R b relation exhibits ∼62% less scatter in log M BH than the M BH–σ relations. Our findings suggest that large-core spheroids form via multiple major “dry” merger events involving super/ultramassive BHs, consistent with the flattening of the σ–L V relation observed at M V ≲ −23.5 mag.

J., What determines the nuclear radio emission in local galaxies? To address this question, we combine optical [O iii] line emission, robust black hole (BH) mass estimates, and high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5-GHz data, from the LeMMINGs survey, of a statistically complete sample of 280 nearby optically active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive [H ii and absorption line galaxies (ALGs)] galaxies. Using [O iii] luminosity (L[O III]) as a proxy for the accretion power, local galaxies follow distinct sequences in the optical-radio planes of BH activity, which suggest different origins of the nuclear radio emission for the optical classes. The 1.5-GHz radio luminosity of their parsec-scale cores (Lcore) is found to scale with BH mass (MBH) and [O iii] luminosity. Below MBH ∼106.5 M⊙, stellar processes from non-jetted H ii galaxies dominate with Lcore ∝ MBH0.61 ± 0.33 and Lcore ∝ L[O III]0.79 ± 0.30. Above MBH ∼106.5 M⊙, accretion-driven processes dominate with Lcore ∝ MBH1.5-1.65 and Lcore ∝ L[O III]0.99-1.31 for active galaxies: radio-quiet/loud LINERs, Seyferts, and jetted H ii galaxies always display (although low) signatures of radio-emitting BH activity, with L1.5 GHz ≳ 1019.8 W Hz-1 and MBH ≳ 107 M⊙, on a broad range of Eddington-scaled accretion rates (m). Radio-quiet and radio-loud LINERs are powered by low-m discs launching sub-relativistic and relativistic jets, respectively. Low-power slow jets and disc/corona winds from moderately high to high-m discs account for the compact and edge-brightened jets of Seyferts, respectively. Jetted H ii galaxies may host weakly active BHs. Fuel-starved BHs and recurrent activity account for ALG properties. Mid-infrared observations are a vital tool for the study of a wide range of astrophysical phenomena. However, ground-based mid-infrared detectors must overcome the challenge of the overwhelming thermal background from sky and telescope emissions making them prohibitively costly for smaller (< 3 m) facilities. We describe the design and testing of a simple prototype, low-cost 10 µm imaging instrument built around an uncooled microbolometer camera. The instrument incorporates adjustable germanium re-imaging optics to rescale the image to an appropriate plate-scale for 1−2 m class telescopes and uses a gold coated chopping mirror to remove overwhelming sky background contributions. The instrument was tested with a programme of observations of bright mid-infrared sources on the 2 m Liverpool Telescope and the 1.52 m Carlos Sanchez Telescope. With these observations we confirm the instrument can be used for diffraction-limited imaging and has a photometric stability of ~10 %. We report an in-practice sensitivity limit of ~600 Jy, and a theoretical sensitivity limit of ∼ 450 Jy based on the noise equivalent differential temperature of the microbolometer system.

We investigate the spatial distribution of star formation (SF) within bars of nearby disk galaxies (inclination $< 65^{\circ}$) from the S$^4$G survey. We use archival GALEX far- and near-UV imaging for 772 barred galaxies. We also assemble a compilation of continuum-subtracted H$\alpha$ images for 433 barred galaxies, of which 70 are produced by ourselves from ancillary photometry and MUSE/CALIFA IFU data cubes. We employ two complementary approaches: i) the analysis of bar/disk stacks built from co-added UV images of hundreds of galaxies; and ii) the classification of the morphology of ionised regions in galaxies into three main SF classes: A) only circumnuclear SF, B) SF at the bar ends, but not along the bar, and C) SF along the bar. Lenticular galaxies typically belong to SF class A: this is probably related to bar-induced SF quenching. The distribution of SF class B peaks for early- and intermediate-type spirals: this most likely results from the interplay of gas flow, shocks, and enhanced shear in centrally concentrated galaxies with large bar amplitudes. Late-type galaxies are mainly assigned to SF class C: we argue that this is a consequence of low shear. In bar stacks of spirals, the UV emission traces the stellar bars and dominates on their leading side, as witnessed in simulations. For early-types, the central UV emission is $\sim$0.5 mag brighter in strongly barred galaxies, relative to their weakly barred counterparts: this is related to the efficiency of strong bars sweeping the disk gas and triggering central starbursts. We also show that the distributions of SF in inner ringed galaxies are broadly the same in barred and non-barred galaxies, including a UV/H$\alpha$ deficit in the middle part of the bar: this hints at the effect of resonance rings trapping gas. A key characteristic of many active galactic nuclei (AGN) is their variability, but its origin is poorly understood, especially in the radio domain. Williams et al. (2017) reported a ∼50 per cent increase in peak flux density of the AGN in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 at 1.5 GHz with the e-MERLIN array. We present new high resolution e-MERLIN observations at 5 GHz and compare these to archival MERLIN observations to investigate the reported variability. Our new observations allow us to probe the nuclear region at a factor three times higher-resolution than the previous e-MERLIN study. We separate the core component, C4, into three separate components: C4W, C4E and X. The AGN is thought to reside in component C4W, but this component has remained constant between epochs within uncertainties. However, we find that the Eastern-most component, C4E, has increased in peak flux density from 19.35±1.10 to 37.09±1.86 mJy/beam, representing a 8.2σ increase on the MERLIN observations. We attribute this peak flux density increase to continued interaction between the jet and the emission line region (ELR), observed for the first time in a low-luminosity AGN such as NGC 4151. Now almost 70 years since its introduction, the effective or half-light radius has become a very popular choice for characterising galaxy size. However, the effective radius measures the concentration of light within galaxies and thus does not capture the intuitive definition of size which is related to the edge or boundary of objects. For this reason, we aim to demonstrate the undesirable consequence of using the effective radius to draw conclusions about the nature of faint 'ultra-diffuse galaxies' (UDGs) when compared to dwarfs and Milky Way-like galaxies. Instead of the effective radius, we use a measure of galaxy size based on the location of the gas density threshold required for star formation. Compared to the effective radius, this physically motivated definition places the sizes much closer to the boundary of a galaxy. Therefore, considering the sizes and stellar mass density profiles of UDGs and regular dwarfs, we find that the UDGs have sizes that are within the size range of dwarfs. We also show that currently known UDGs do not have sizes comparable to Milky Way-like objects. We find that, on average, UDGs are ten times smaller in extension than Milky Way-like galaxies. These results show that the use of size estimators sensitive to the concentration of light can lead to misleading results., 9 pages, 7 figures, published in A&A Letters. There is a growing consensus that the vast majority of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are dwarf galaxies. However, there remain a few UDGs that seem to be special in terms of their globular cluster (GC) systems. In particular, according to some authors, certain UDGs exhibit large GC populations when compared to expectations from their stellar (or total) mass. Among these special UDGs, DF44 in the Coma cluster is one of the better-known examples. DF44 has been claimed to have a relatively high number of GCs, $N_{GC}=74^{+18}_{-18}$, for a stellar mass of only $3\times 10^8$ $M_{ \odot }$ which would indicate a much larger dark halo mass than dwarfs of similar stellar mass. In this paper we revisit this number and, contrary to previous results, find $N_{GC}=21^{+7}_{-9}$ assuming that the distribution of the GCs follows the same geometry as the galaxy. If we assume that the GCs around DF44 are distributed in a (projected) circularly symmetric way and, if we use a less strict criterion for the selection of the GCs, we find $N_{GC}=18^{+23}_{-12}$. Making use of the $M_{\rm GC} - M_{\rm halo}$ relation, this number of GCs suggests a dark matter halo mass of $M_{halo}=1.1^{+0.4}_{-0.5} \times 10^{11} M_{\odot}$, a value which is consistent with the expected total mass for DF44 based on its velocity dispersion, $\sigma=33^{+3}_{-3}$ km s$^{-1}$. [Abridged] Tight correlations between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and the properties of the host galaxy have useful implications for our understanding of the growth of SMBHs and evolution of galaxies. Here, we present newly observed correlations between $M_{\rm BH}$ and the host galaxy total UV$-$ [3.6] color ($\mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$, Pearson's r = $0.6-0.7$) for a sample of 67 galaxies (20 early-type galaxies and 47 late-type galaxies) with directly measured $M_{\rm BH}$ in the GALEX/S$^{4}$G survey. The colors are carefully measured in a homogeneous manner using the galaxies' FUV, NUV and 3.6 $\micron$ magnitudes and their multi-component structural decompositions in the literature. We find that more massive SMBHs are hosted by (early- and late-type) galaxies with redder colors, but the $M_{\rm BH}- \mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$ relations for the two morphological types have slopes that differ at $\sim 2 \sigma$ level. Early-type galaxies define a red sequence in the $M_{\rm BH}- \mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$ diagrams, while late-type galaxies trace a blue sequence. Within the assumption that the specific star formation rate of a galaxy (sSFR) is well traced by $L_{\rm UV}/L_{\rm 3.6}$, it follows that the SMBH masses for late-type galaxies exhibit a steeper dependence on sSFR than those for early-type galaxies. The $M_{\rm BH}- \mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$ and $M_{\rm BH}-L_{\rm 3.6,tot}$ relations for the sample galaxies reveal a comparable level of vertical scatter in the log $M_{\rm BH}$ direction, roughly $5\%-27\%$ more than the vertical scatter of the $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma$ relation. Our $M_{\rm BH}- \mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$ relations suggest different channels of SMBH growth for early- and late-type galaxies, consistent with their distinct formation and evolution scenarios., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the atomic gas content and the central stellar mass concentration for a sample of almost 1500 nearby galaxies to investigate the nature of starbursts and the influence of galaxy-galaxy interactions on star formation (SF). We used a sample of catalogued interacting and non-interacting galaxies in the S$^4$G survey - along with archival HI gas masses, stellar masses ($M_{\ast}$), and SF rates from $IRAS$ far-infrared fluxes - and calculate depletion times and gas fractions. We traced the central stellar mass concentration from the inner slope of the stellar component of the rotation curves. Starbursts are defined as galaxies with a factor $>4$ enhanced SF rate relative to a control sample of non-interacting galaxies which are $\pm 0.2$ dex in stellar mass and $\pm 1$ in $T$-type. Starbursts are mainly early-type ($T\lesssim 5$), massive spiral galaxies ($M_{\ast}\gtrsim 10^{10}M_{\odot}$) that are not necessarily interacting. For a given stellar mass bin, starbursts are characterised by lower gas depletion times, similar gas fractions, and larger central stellar mass concentrations than non-starburst galaxies. The global distributions of gas fraction and gas depletion time are not statistically different for interacting and non-interacting galaxies. However, in the case of currently merging galaxies, the median gas depletion time is a factor of $0.4 \pm 0.2$ that of control sample galaxies, and their SF rates are a factor of $1.9 \pm 0.5$ enhanced, even though the median gas fraction is similar. Starbursts present long-lasting SF in the circumnuclear regions that causes an enhancement of the central stellar density at $z\approx0$ in both interacting and non-interacting systems. Starbursts have low gas depletion timescales, yet similar gas fractions as normal main-sequence galaxies. Present-day multi-wavelength deep imaging surveys allow to characterise the outskirts of galaxies with unprecedented precision. Taking advantage of this situation, we define a new physically motivated measurement of size for galaxies based on the expected location of the gas density threshold for star formation. Employing both theoretical and observational arguments, we use the stellar mass density contour at 1 $M_{\rm \odot}$ pc$^{-2}$ as a proxy for this density threshold for star formation. This choice makes our size definition operative. With this new size measure, the intrinsic scatter of the global stellar mass ($M_{\rm \star}$) - size relation (explored over five orders of magnitude in stellar mass) decreases to $\sim$0.06 dex. This value is 2.5 times smaller than the scatter measured using the effective radius ($\sim$0.15 dex) and between 1.5 and 1.8 times smaller than those using other traditional size indicators such as $R_{\rm 23.5,i}$ ($\sim$0.09 dex), the Holmberg radius $R_{\rm H}$ ($\sim$0.09 dex) and the half-mass radius $R_{\rm e,M_{\star}}$ ($\sim$0.11 dex). Moreover, galaxies with 10$^7$ $M_{\rm \odot} $10$^{11}$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ show a different slope with stellar mass, which is suggestive of a larger gas density threshold for star formation at the epoch when their star formation peaks., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS, in press. We report the discovery of an extremely large (R_b ~ 2"77 ~ 4.2 kpc) core in the brightest cluster galaxy, IC 1101, of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2029. Luminous core-S\'ersic galaxies contain depleted cores---with sizes (R_b) typically 20 - 500 pc---that are thought to be formed by coalescing black hole binaries. We fit a (double nucleus) + (spheroid) + (intermediate-scale component) + (stellar halo) model to the HST surface brightness profile of IC 1101, finding the largest core size measured in any galaxy to date. This core is an order of magnitude larger than those typically measured for core-S\'ersic galaxies. We find that the spheroid's V-band absolute magnitude (M_V) of -23.8 mag (~ 25% of the total galaxy light, i.e., including the stellar halo) is faint for the large R_b, such that the observed core is 1.02 dex ~ 3.4 sigma_s (rms scatter) larger than that estimated from the R_ b -M_V relation. The suspected scouring process has produced a large stellar mass deficit (M_def) ~ 4.9 X 10^11 M_sun, i.e., a luminosity deficit ~ 28% of the spheroid's luminosity prior to the depletion. Using IC 1101's black hole mass (M_BH) estimated from the M_BH-$\sigma$, M_BH-L and M_BH-M_* relations, we measure an excessive and unrealistically high number of dry major mergers for IC 1101 (i.e., $\mathcal{N} \ga 76$) as traced by the large M_def/M_ BH ratios of 38-101. The large core, high mass deficit and oversized M_def/M_ BH ratio of IC 1101 suggest that the depleted core was scoured by overmassive SMBH binaries with a final coalesced mass M_BH ~ (4 -10) X 10^10 M_sun, i.e., ~ (1.7- 3.2) X sigma_s larger than the black hole masses estimated using the spheroid's $\sigma$, L and M_*. Bars in galaxies are thought to stimulate both inflow of material and radial mixing along them. Observational evidence for this mixing has been inconclusive so far however, limiting the evaluation of the impact of bars on galaxy evolution. We now use results from the MaNGA integral field spectroscopic survey to characterise radial stellar age and metallicity gradients along the bar and outside the bar in 128 strongly barred galaxies. We find that age and metallicity gradients are flatter in the barred regions of almost all barred galaxies when compared to corresponding disk regions at the same radii. Our results re-emphasize the key fact that by azimuthally averaging integral field spectroscopic data one loses important information from non-axisymmetric galaxy components such as bars and spiral arms. We interpret our results as observational evidence that bars are radially mixing material in galaxies of all stellar masses, and for all bar morphologies and evolutionary stages., 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We study the structure of thick discs in extraordinary depth by reaching a surface brightness limit of $\mu_{r_{\rm deep}} \sim$28.5$-$29~mag arcsec$^{-2}$ with combined $g$,$r$,$i$ band images from the IAC Stripe 82 Legacy Project. We present the characterisation of the thick discs in a sample of five edge-on galaxies. A study of the radial and vertical surface brightness profiles is presented by comparing our data with point spread function (PSF) deconvolved models. Our method begins with an analysis of the background and masking processes. Then we consider the effects of the PSF through galaxy modelling. The galaxy disc components are fitted considering that the thin and thick discs are two stellar fluids that are gravitationally coupled in hydrostatic equilibrium. We find that effects due to the PSF are significant when low surface brightness is reached, especially in the vertical profiles, but it can be accounted for by careful modelling. The galaxy outskirts are strongly affected by the faint wings of the PSF, mainly by PSF-redistributed light from the thin disc. This is a central problem for ultra-deep imaging. The thick-disc component is required to reach satisfactory fit results in the more complex galaxies in our sample, although it is not required for all galaxies. When the PSF is ignored, the brightness of these structures may be overestimated by up to a factor of $\sim$4. In general, our results are in good agreement with those of previous works, although we reach deeper surface brightness levels, so that the PSF effects are stronger. We obtain scale heights and mass ratios of thin and thick discs ($z_{{\rm t}}$, $z_{{\rm T}}$, and $M_{{\rm T}}/M_{{\rm t}}$), which provide excellent agreement with previous studies. Thick discs are nearly ubiquitous components of the discs of present-day galaxies. It has been proposed that a fraction of their stars has been accreted. Here, we aim to find whether accretion of satellites is the main thick disc formation mechanism. To do so, we observed a sample of eight nearby edge-on galaxies with the MUSE integral field unit at the VLT. Six of the galaxies have a distinct thick disc. We derived thick disc velocities and velocity dispersions for the galaxies in our sample. We devise a formalism to estimate the fractions of retrograde material in the thick discs by using kinematical maps and thin/thick dis decompositions. None of the galaxies in our sample shows strong evidence for retrograde material at large distances from the centre. Including those found in the literature, there are seventeen thick discs with studied kinematics, with only one showing unambiguous signatures of retrograde material. Literature numerical studies of dynamical friction allow us to estimate that at the current cosmic time about one in six mergers for which the stars of the accreted galaxy ended in a thick disc were retrograde. This is in tension with the observed fraction of 1/17 of galaxies with a partly retrograde thick disc. We conclude that satellite accretion is not favoured by observations to be the main thick disk formation mechanism., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Spectra of galaxies contain a wealth of information about the stellar populations from which they are made. With integral-field unit (IFU) surveys, such data can be used to map out stellar population properties across the face of a galaxy, allowing one to go beyond simple radial profiles and study details of non-axisymmetric structure. To-date, however, such studies have been limited by the quality of available data and the power of spectral analysis tools. We now take the next step and study the barred spiral galaxy MCG+07-28-064 from observations obtained as part of the SDSS-IV MaNGA project. We find that we can decompose this galaxy into "time slices," which reveal the varying contributions that stars of differing ages make to its bar and spiral structure, offering new insight into the evolution of these features. We find evidence for the ongoing growth of the bar, including the most recent star formation on its leading edge, and for the underlying density wave responsible for spiral structure. This pilot study indicates that there is a wealth of untapped information on the spatial distribution of SFHs available in the current generation of IFU galaxy surveys., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Spiral galaxies are common in the local Universe, but their formation, evolution, and interplay with bars remain poorly understood. We use a sample of 391 nearby galaxies from the S$^4$G survey to characterise the winding angle and amplitude of spiral arms as a function of disc properties, such as bar strength, in all kinds of spirals (grand-design, multi-armed, and flocculent). We derive global pitch angles in 3.6 $��$m de-projected images from i) average measurements of individual logarithmic spiral segments, and ii) for a subsample of 32 galaxies, from 2-D Fourier analyses. The strength of spirals is quantified from the tangential-to-radial force ratio and from the normalised $m=2$ Fourier density amplitudes. In galaxies with more than one measured logarithmic segment, the spiral pitch angle varies on average by $\sim 10^{\circ}$ between segments, but by up to $\gtrsim 15-20^{\circ}$. The distribution of the global pitch angle versus Hubble type ($T$) is very similar for barred and non-barred galaxies when $1 \lesssim T \lesssim 5$. Most spiral galaxies ($>90\%$) are barred for $T>5$. The pitch angle is not correlated with bar strength, and only weakly with spiral strength. The amplitude of spirals is correlated with bar strength (and less tightly, with bar length) for all types of spirals. The mean pitch angle is hardly correlated with the mass of the supermassive black hole (estimated from central stellar velocity dispersion), with central stellar mass concentration, or with shear, questioning previous results in the literature using smaller samples. We do not find observational evidence that spiral arms are driven by stellar bars or by invariant manifolds. We present high-sensitivity eMERLIN radio images of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 at 1.5 GHz. We compare the new eMERLIN images to those from archival MERLIN observations in 1993 to determine the change in jet morphology in the 22 years between observations. We report an increase by almost a factor of 2 in the peak flux density of the central core component, C4, thought to host the black hole, but a probable decrease in some other components, possibly due to adiabatic expansion. The core flux increase indicates an AGN which is currently active and feeding the jet. We detect no significant motion in 22 years between C4 and the component C3, which is unresolved in the eMERLIN image. We present a spectral index image made within the 512 MHz band of the 1.5 GHz observations. The spectrum of the core, C4, is flatter than that of other components further out in the jet. We use HST emission line images (H$\alpha$, [O III] and [O II]) to study the connection between the jet and the emission line region. Based on the changing emission line ratios away from the core and comparison with the eMERLIN radio jet, we conclude that photoionisation from the central AGN is responsible for the observed emission line properties further than 4" (360 pc) from the core, C4. Within this region, several evidences (radio-line co-spatiality, low [O III]/H$\alpha$ and estimated fast shocks) suggest additional ionisation from the jet., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We present a study of the molecular gas properties in a sample of 98 HI - flux selected spiral galaxies within $\sim25$ Mpc, using the CO $J=3-2$ line observed with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We use the technique of survival analysis to incorporate galaxies with CO upper limits into our results. Comparing the group and Virgo samples, we find a larger mean H$_{2}$ mass in the Virgo galaxies, despite their lower mean HI mass. This leads to a significantly higher H$_{2}$ to HI ratio for Virgo galaxies. Combining our data with complementary H$\alpha$ star formation rate measurements, Virgo galaxies have longer molecular gas depletion times compared to group galaxies, due to their higher H$_{2}$ masses and lower star formation rates. We suggest that the longer depletion times may be a result of heating processes in the cluster environment or differences in the turbulent pressure. From the full sample, we find that the molecular gas depletion time has a positive correlation with the stellar mass, indicative of differences in the star formation process between low and high mass galaxies, and a negative correlation between the molecular gas depletion time and the specific star formation rate., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 25 pages, 14 figures

We study how interactions between galaxies affect star formation within them by considering a sample of almost 1500 of the nearest galaxies, all within a distance of ∼45 Mpc. We use the far-IR emission to define the massive star formation rate (SFR), and then normalise the SFR by the stellar mass of the galaxy to obtain the specific star formation rate (SSFR). We explore the distribution of (S)SFR with morphological type and with stellar mass. We calculate the relative enhancement of SFR and SSFR for each galaxy by normalising them by the median SFR and SSFR values of individual control samples of similar non-interacting galaxies. We find that both the median SFR and SSFR are enhanced in interacting galaxies, and more so as the degree of interaction is higher. The increase is moderate, reaching a maximum of a factor of 1.9 for the highest degree of interaction (mergers). While the SFR and SSFR are enhanced statistically by interactions, in many individual interacting galaxies they are not enhanced at all. Our study is based on a representative sample of nearby galaxies and should be used to place constraints on studies based on samples of galaxies at larger distances.

We have analysed a new high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5 GHz radio continuum map together with $HST$ and SDSS imaging of NGC 5322, an elliptical galaxy hosting radio jets, aiming to understand the galaxy's central structure and its connection to the nuclear activity. We decomposed the composite $HST$ + SDSS surface brightness profile of the galaxy into an inner stellar disc, a spheroid, and an outer stellar halo. Past works showed that this embedded disc counter-rotates rapidly with respect to the spheroid. The $HST$ images reveal an edge-on nuclear dust disc across the centre, aligned along the major-axis of the galaxy and nearly perpendicular to the radio jets. After careful masking of this dust disc, we find a central stellar mass deficit $M_{\rm def}$ in the spheroid, scoured by SMBH binaries with final mass $M_{\rm BH}$ such that $M_{\rm def}/M_{\rm BH} \sim 1.3 - 3.4$. We propose a three-phase formation scenario for NGC 5322 where a few ($2-7$) "dry" major mergers involving SMBHs built the spheroid with a depleted core. The cannibalism of a gas-rich satellite subsequently creates the faint counter-rotating disc and funnels gaseous material directly onto the AGN, powering the radio core with a brightness temperature of $T_{\rm B,core} \sim 4.5 \times 10^{7}$ K and the low-power radio jets ($P_{\rm jets}\sim 7.04 \times 10^{20}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) which extend $\sim 1.6$ kpc. The outer halo can later grow via minor mergers and the accretion of tidal debris. The low-luminosity AGN/jet-driven feedback may have quenched the late-time nuclear star formation promptly, which could otherwise have replenished the depleted core., 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Disc truncations are the closest feature to an edge that galaxies have, but the nature of this phenomena is not yet understood. In this paper, we explore the truncations in two nearby (D ~15 Mpc) Milky Way-like galaxies: NGC 4565 and NGC 5907. We cover a wide wavelength range from the NUV and optical, to 3.6 {\mu}m. We find that the radius of the truncation (26+/-0.5 kpc) is independent of wavelength. Surprisingly, we identify (at all wavelengths) the truncation at altitudes as high as 3 kpc above the mid-plane, which implies that the thin disc in those outer regions has a width of at least this value. We find the characteristic U-shape radial colour profile associated with a star formation threshold at the location of the truncation. Further supporting such an origin, the stellar mass density at the position of the truncation is ~1-2 M_sun pc^-2, in good agreement with the critical gas density for transforming gas into stars. Beyond the truncation, the stellar mass in the mid-plane of the disc drops to just 0.1-0.2% of the total stellar mass of the galaxies. The detection of the truncation at high altitude in combination with the U shape of the radial colour profile allows us to establish, for the first time, an upper limit to the present-day growth rate of galactic discs. We present the discovery of a small kinematically decoupled core of 0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ (60 pc) in radius as well as an outflow jet in the archetypical AGN-starburst "composite" galaxy NGC 7130 from integral field data obtained with the adaptive optics-assisted MUSE-NFM instrument on the VLT. Correcting the already good natural seeing at the time of our science verification observations with the four-laser GALACSI AO system, we reach an unprecedented spatial resolution at optical wavelengths of around 0.15$^{\prime\prime}$. We confirm the existence of star-forming knots arranged in a ring of 0.58$^{\prime\prime}$ (185 pc) in radius around the nucleus, previously observed from UV and optical Hubble Space Telescope and CO(6-5) ALMA imaging. We determine the position of the nucleus as the location of a peak in gas velocity dispersion. A plume of material extends towards the NE from the nucleus until at least the edge of our field of view at 2$^{\prime\prime}$ (640 pc) radius which we interpret as an outflow jet originating in the AGN. The plume is not visible morphologically, but is clearly characterised in our data by emission-line ratios characteristic of AGN emission, enhanced gas velocity dispersion, and distinct non-circular gas velocities. Its orientation is roughly perpendicular to the line of nodes of the rotating host galaxy disc. A circumnuclear area of positive and negative velocities of 0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ in radius indicates a tiny inner disc, which can only be seen after combining the integral field spectroscopic capabilities of MUSE with adaptive optics., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letters

We present a kinematical study of 29 spiral galaxies included in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, using Halpha Fabry-Perot data obtained with the Galaxy Halpha Fabry-Perot System instrument at the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, complemented with images in the R-band and in Halpha. The primary goal is to study the evolution and properties of the main structural components of galaxies through the kinematical analysis of the FP data, complemented with studies of morphology, star formation and mass distribution. In this paper we describe how the FP data have been obtained, processed and analysed. We present the resulting moment maps, rotation curves, velocity model maps and residual maps. Images are available in FITS format through the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database and the Centre de Donn\'ees Stellaires. With these data products we study the non-circular motions, in particular those found along the bars and spiral arms. The data indicate that the amplitude of the non-circular motions created by the bar does not correlate with the bar strength indicators. The amplitude of those non-circular motions in the spiral arms does not correlate with either arm class or star formation rate along the spiral arms. We present the BaLROG (Bars in Low Redshift Optical Galaxies) sample of 16 morphologically distinct barred spirals to characterise observationally the influence of bars on nearby galaxies. Each galaxy is a mosaic of several pointings observed with the IFU spectrograph SAURON leading to a tenfold sharper spatial resolution (~100 pc) compared to ongoing IFU surveys. In this paper we focus on the kinematic properties. We calculate the bar strength Qb from classical torque analysis using 3.6 {\mu}m Spitzer (S4G) images, but also develop a new method based solely on the kinematics. A correlation between the two measurements is found and backed up by N-body simulations, verifying the measurement of Qb . We find that bar strengths from ionised gas kinematics are ~2.5 larger than those measured from stellar kinematics and that stronger bars have enhanced influence on inner kinematic features. We detect that stellar angular momentum "dips" at 0.2$\pm$0.1 bar lengths and half of our sample exhibits an anti-correlation of h3 - stellar velocity (v/{\sigma}) in these central parts. An increased flattening of the stellar {\sigma} gradient with increasing bar strength supports the notion of bar-induced orbit mixing.
