22. Deducing temporal correlation between nearshore wave process and surficial heavy mineral placer deposits: A case study along the central Tamil Nadu coast, India.

Abstract

In the present study monthly observation (January 2011 to January 2012) of wave measurements and sediment samples are considered for multivariate statistical analysis. The CCA plots revealed that heavy mineral concentration in the tidal region proportional to the breaker wave height, longshore current velocity and surf zone width, while concentration in berm region proportional to the wave period. The distant projection of backshore samples revealed that heavy mineral distribution controlled by the aeolian process. Moreover, results of 3D scatter plot between sediment characteristics and heavy mineral deposits confirm this correlation on a temporal scale. The overall result implies that the monsoonal wave process does not affect the heavy mineral distribution, but influencing the quantity of deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

23. Seismotectonics of central and NW Himalaya: plate boundary–wedge thrust earthquakes in thin- and thick-skinned tectonic framework

Abstract

The tectonic framework of NW Himalaya is different from that of the central Himalaya with respect to the position of the Main Central Thrust and Higher Himalayan Crystalline and the Lesser and Sub Himalayan structures. The former is characterized by thick-skinned tectonics, whereas the thin-skinned model explains the tectonic evolution of the central Himalaya. The boundary between the two segments of Himalaya is recognized along the Ropar–Manali lineament fault zone. The normal convergence rate within the Himalaya decreases from c.18 mm a−1in the central to c.15 mm a−1in the NW segments. In the last 800 years of historical accounts of large earthquakes of magnitude Mw≥ 7, there are seven earthquakes clustered in the central Himalaya, whereas three reported earthquakes are widely separated in the NW Himalaya. The earthquakes in central Himalaya are inferred as occurring over the plate boundary fault, the Main Himalayan Thrust. The wedge thrust earthquakes in NW Himalaya originate over the faults on the hanging wall of the Main Himalayan Thrust. Palaeoseismic evidence recorded on the Himalayan front suggests the occurrence of giant earthquakes in the central Himalaya. The lack of such an event reported in the NW Himalaya may be due to oblique convergence.

Abstract

The analysis of beach profile combined with wave data provides a clear understanding of beach topography and physical behavior of the coast. Numerous commercial and noncommercial computer programs and add-on tools are available to analyze beach profile and wave data. But, most of them are specifically designed for particular coastal application. Moreover, searching of open source software for diverse coastal application is a tedious process. To make it easily accessible, we have developed an integrated Matlab GUI for beach morphology and wave analysis. The tool “ONWET (OceaN WavE Tool)” mainly includes wave processes, beach morphology, spatiotemporal variation in beach profile, wave refraction, and sediment transport rate. The tool has automated inbuilt functions and is designed to accommodate importing/exporting of data (results both in data and graphical format). It includes user friendly options and can be freely download from our institutional website. The tool is very useful for researchers, scientists, engineers, and environmentalists who are working in the field of coastal studies and beach nourishment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
