We re-analyzed the Herschel/PACS data of a sample of 55 brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars with spectral types ranging from M5.5 to L0. We investigated the dependence of disk structure on the mass of the central object in the substellar regime based on a homogeneous analysis of Herschel data from flux density measurements to spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling. A systematic comparison between the derived disk properties and those of sun-like stars shows that the disk flaring of BDs and very low mass stars is generally smaller than that of their higher mass counterparts, the disk mass is orders of magnitude lower than the typical value found in T Tauri stars, and the disk scale heights are comparable in both sun-like stars and BDs. We further divided our sample into an early-type brown dwarf (ETBD) group and a late-type brown dwarf (LTBD) group by using spectral type (=M8) as the border criterion. We systematically compared the modeling results from Bayesian analysis between these two groups, and found the trends of flaring index as a function of spectral type also present in the substellar regime. The spectral type independence of the scale height is also seen between high-mass and very low-mass BDs. However, both the ETBD and LTBD groups feature a similar median disk mass of 10^{-5}Msun and no clear trend is visible in the distribution, probably due to the uncertainty in translating the far-IR photometry into disk mass, the detection bias and the age difference among the sample. Unlike previous studies, our analysis is completely homogeneous in Herschel/PACS data reduction and modeling with a statistically significant sample. Therefore, we present evidence of stellar-mass-dependent disk structure down to the substellar mass regime, which is important for planet formation models. We show that the coolest known object that is probably formed in a star-like mode is a free-floating planet. We discovered recently that the free-floating planetary mass object OTS,44 (M9.5, ~12 Jupiter masses, age ~2 Myr) has significant accretion and a substantial disk. This demonstrates that the processes that characterize the canonical star-like mode of formation apply to isolated objects down to a few Jupiter masses. We detected in VLT/SINFONI spectra that OTS44 has strong, broad, and variable Paschen beta emission. This is the first evidence for active accretion of a free-floating planet. The object allows us to study accretion and disk physics at the extreme and can be seen as free-floating analog of accreting planets that orbit stars. Our analysis of OTS44 shows that the mass-accretion rate decreases continuously from stars of several solar masses down to free-floating planets. We determined, furthermore, the disk mass (10 Earth masses) and further disk properties of OTS44 through modeling its SED including Herschel far-IR data. We find that objects between 14 and 0.01 solar masses have the same ratio of the disk-to-central-mass of about 1%. The astrometric space mission Gaia is expected to detect a large number of brown dwarf binary systems with close orbits and determine astrometric orbit solutions. This will provide key information for the formation and evolution of brown dwarfs, such as the binary frequency and dynamical masses. Known brown dwarf binaries with orbit constraints from other techniques will play an important role. We are carrying out one of the most precise and long-lasting radial velocity surveys for brown dwarf binaries in the Cha I star-forming region at the VLT. We were able to add two orbit determinations to the small group of a handful of brown dwarf and very low-mass binaries with characterized RV orbits. We show here that the astrometric motion of both systems can be detected with Gaia. We predict an astrometric signal of about 1.2 - 1.6 milliarcseconds (mas) for the brown dwarf binary ChaHa8 and of 0.4 - 0.8 mas for the very low-mass binary CHXR74. We discover that the very low-mass brown dwarf OTS44 (M9.5, ~12 M_Jup) has significant accretion and a substantial disk, which demonstrates that the processes that accompany canonical star formation occur down to a central mass of a few Jupiter masses. We discover in VLT/SINFONI spectra that OTS44 has strong, broad, and variable Paschen beta emission that is evidence for active accretion at the planetary border. We also detect strong Halpha emission of OTS44 in a literature spectrum and determine an Halpha EW (-141 A) that is indicative of active accretion. Both the Pa beta and Halpha emission lines have broad profiles with wings extending to velocities of about +/-200 km/s. We determine the mass accretion rate of OTS44 based on Halpha to 7.6x10^{-12} Msun/yr, which shows that OTS44 has a relatively high mass-accretion rate considering its small central mass. This mass rate is nevertheless consistent with the general decreasing trend found for stars of several solar masses down to brown dwarfs. Furthermore, we determine the properties of the disk surrounding OTS44 through radiative transfer modeling of flux measurement from the optical to the far-IR (Herschel) by applying a Bayesian analysis. We find that OTS44 has a highly flared disk (beta >1.2) with a mass of 9.1x10^{-5} M_Sun, i.e. about 0.1 M_Jup or 30 M_Earth. We show that the ratio of disk-to-central-mass of about 10^{-2} found for objects between 0.03 Msun and 14 Msun is also valid for OTS44 at a mass of ~0.01 M_Sun. Circumstellar disks are expected to be the birthplaces of planets. The potential for forming one or more planets of various masses is essentially driven by the initial mass of the disks. We present and analyze Herschel/PACS observations of disk-bearing M-type stars that belong to the young ~2 Myr old Chamaleon-I star forming region. We used the radiative transfer code RADMC to successfully model the SED of 17 M-type stars detected at PACS wavelengths. We first discuss the relatively low detection rates of M5 and later spectral type stars with respect to the PACS sensitivity, and argue their disks masses, or flaring indices, are likely to be low. For M0 to M3 stars, we find a relatively broad range of disk masses, scale heights, and flaring indices. Via a parametrization of dust stratification, we can reproduce the peak fluxes of the 10 $\mu$m emission feature observed with Spitzer/IRS, and find that disks around M-type stars may display signs of dust sedimentation. The Herschel/PACS observations of low-mass stars in Cha-I provide new constraints on their disk properties, overall suggesting that disk parameters for early M-type stars are comparable to those for more massive stars (e.g., comparable scale height and flaring angles). However, regions of the disks emitting at about 100 $\mu$m may still be in the optically thick regime, preventing direct determination of disk masses. Thus the modeled disk masses should be considered as lower limits. Still, we are able to extend the wavelength coverage of SED models and start characterizing effects such as dust sedimentation, an effort leading the way towards ALMA observations of these low-mass stars.

We discover that the very young very low-mass star ISO143 (M5) is driving an outflow based on spectro-astrometry of forbidden [SII] emission lines at 6716A and 6731A observed in UVES/VLT spectra. This adds another object to the handful of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars (M5-M8) for which an outflow has been confirmed and which show that the T Tauri phase continues at very low masses. We find the outflow of ISO143 to be intrinsically asymmetric and the accretion disk to not obscure the outflow, as only the red outflow component is visible in the [SII] lines. ISO143 is only the third T Tauri object showing a stronger red outflow component in spectro-astrometry, after RW Aur (G5) and ISO217 (M6.25). We show here that including ISO143 two out of seven outflows confirmed in the very low-mass regime (M5-M8) are intrinsically asymmetric. We measure a spatial extension of the outflow in [SII] of up to 200-300 mas (about 30-50 AU) and velocities of up to 50-70 km/s. We furthermore detect line emission of ISO143 in CaII (8498), OI (8446), HeI (7065), and weakly in [FeII] (7155). Based on a line profile analysis and decomposition we demonstrate that (i) the CaII emission can be attributed to chromospheric activity, a variable wind, and the magnetospheric infall zone, (ii) the OI emission mainly to accretion-related processes but also a wind, and (iii) the HeI emission to chromospheric or coronal activity. We estimate a mass outflow rate of ISO143 of ~10^{-10} Msol/yr and a mass accretion rate in the range of ~10^{-8} to ~10^{-9} Msol/yer. These values are consistent with those of other brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars. Characterization of the properties of young brown dwarfs are important to constraining the formation of objects at the extreme low-mass end of the IMF. While young brown dwarfs share many properties with solar-mass T Tauri stars, differences may be used as tests of how the physics of accretion/outflow and disk chemistry/dissipation depend on the mass of the central object. This article summarizes the presentations and discussions during the splinter session on 'Disks, accretion and outflows of brown dwarfs' held at the CoolStars17 conference in Barcelona in June 2012. We show that the very young brown dwarf candidate ISO217 (M6.25) is driving an intrinsically asymmetric bipolar outflow with a stronger and slightly faster red-shifted component based on spectro-astrometry of forbidden [SII] emission lines observed in UVES/VLT spectra taken in 2009. ISO217 is only one of a handful of brown dwarfs and VLMS (M5-M8) for which an outflow has been detected and that show that the T Tauri phase continues at the substellar limit. We measure a spatial extension of the outflow of +/-190mas (+/-30AU) and velocities of +/-40-50kms/s. We show that the velocity asymmetry between both lobes is variable on timescales of a few years and that the strong asymmetry of a factor of 2 found in 2007 might be smaller than originally anticipated when using a more realistic stellar rest-velocity. We also detect forbidden [FeII]7155 emission, for which we propose as potential origin the hot inner regions of the outflow. To understand the ISO217 system, we determine the disk properties based on radiative transfer modeling of the SED. This disk model agrees very well with Herschel/PACS data at 70mu. We find that the disk is flared and intermediately inclined (~45deg). The total disk mass (4e-6 Msun) is small compared to the accretion and outflow rate of ISO217 (~1e-10 Msun/yr). We propose that this discrepancy can be explained by either a higher disk mass than inferred from the model (strong undetected grain growth) and/or by an on average lower accretion and outflow rate than the determined values. We show that a disk inclination significantly exceeding 45deg, as suggested from Halpha modeling and from both lobes of the outflow being visible, is inconsistent with the SED data. Thus, despite its intermediate inclination angle, the disk of this brown dwarf does not appear to obscure the red outflow component, which is very rarely seen for T Tauri objects (only one other case)., Comment: Accepted for publication at A&A; minor changes (language editing)

The pre-main sequence star CHXR74 (M4.25) in ChaI was detected a few years ago to be a very low-mass spectroscopic binary. Determination of its mass would provide a valuable dynamical mass measurement at young ages in the poorly constrained mass regime of <0.3 Msun. We carried out follow-up radial velocity (RV) monitoring with UVES/VLT between 2008 and 2011 and high-resolution adaptive optic assisted imaging with NACO/VLT in 2008 with the aim to constrain the binary orbit. We present an orbital solution of the system based on the combined RV data set which spans more than 11 years of UVES monitoring for CHXR74. The best-fit Kepler model has an orbital period of 13.1 yrs, zero eccentricity, and a RV semi-amplitude of 2.2 km/s. A companion mass M2sini of 0.08 Msun is derived by using a model-dependent mass estimate for the primary of 0.24 Msun. The binary separation for i=90deg is 3.8 AU (23 mas). Complementary NACO images of CHXR74 were taken with the aim to directly resolve the binary. While there are marginal signs of an extended PSF, we have no convincing companion detected to CHXR74 in these images. From the non-detection of the companion together with a prediction of the binary separation at the time of the NACO observations, we derive an upper limit for the K-band brightness ratio of 0.5. This allows us to estimate an upper limit of the companion mass of 0.14 Msun by applying evolutionary models. Thus, we have confirmed that CHXR74 is a very low-mass spectroscopic binary and constrained the secondary mass to lie within the range of about 0.08 and 0.14 Msun. We predict an astrometric signal of the primary between 0.2 and 0.4 mas when taking into account the luminosity of the companion. The GAIA astrometric mission might well be able to solve the astrometric orbit of the primary and in combination with the presented RV data to determine an absolute companion mass., Comment: accepted for publication in A\&A, minor changes (language editing)

We present the results of a high-resolution spectral differential imaging survey of 12 nearby, relatively young field L dwarfs (<1 Gyr) carried out with HST/NICMOS to search for planetary mass companions at small physical separations from their host. The survey resolved two brown dwarf binaries: the L dwarf system Kelu-1AB and the newly discovered L/T transition system 2MASS J031059+164815AB. For both systems common proper motion has already been confirmed in follow-up observations which have been published elsewhere. The derived separations of the binaries are smaller than 6 AU and consistent with previous brown dwarf binary statistics. Their mass ratios of q > 0.8 confirm the preference for equal mass systems similar to a large number of other surveys. Furthermore, we found tentative evidence for a companion to the L4 dwarf 2MASS W033703-175807, straddling the brown dwarf/planetary mass boundary and revealing an uncommonly low mass ratio system (q ~ 0.2) compared to the vast majority of previously found brown dwarf binaries. With a derived minimum mass of 10 - 15 Mjup, a planetary nature of the secondary cannot be ruled out yet. However, it seems more likely to be a very low mass brown dwarf secondary at the border of the spectral T/Y transition regime, primarily due to its similarities to recently found very cool T dwarfs. This would make it one of the closest resolved brown dwarf binaries (0.087" $/pm$ 0.015", corresponding to 2.52 $\pm$ 0.44 AU at a distance of 29 pc) with the coolest (Teff ~ 600-630 K) and least massive companion to any L or T dwarf., Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication by ApJ

The very young brown dwarf candidate ChaHa8 was recently discovered to have a close (~1AU) companion by means of radial velocity monitoring. We present additional radial velocity data obtained with UVES/VLT between 2007 and 2010, which significantly improve the orbit of the system. The combined data set spans ten years of radial velocity monitoring for ChaHa8. A Kepler fit to the data yields an orbital period of 5.2 yrs, an eccentricity of 0.59, and a radial velocity semi-amplitude of 2.4 km/s. A companion mass M2sini (which is a lower limit due to the unknown orbital inclination) of 25 Mjup and of 31 Mjup is derived when using model-dependent mass estimates for the primary of 0.07 and 0.10 Msun, resp. Assuming random orientation of orbits in space, we find a very high probability that the companion of Chaha8 is of substellar nature: With a greater than 87% probability, the companion mass is between 30 and 69 Mjup and the mass ratio < 0.7. The absence of any evidence of the companion in the cross-correlation function together with the size of the radial velocity amplitude also indicate a mass ratio of at most 0.7, and likely smaller. Furthermore, the new data exclude the possibility that the companion has a mass in the planetary regime (<13 Mjup). We show that the companion contributes significantly to the total luminosity of the system: model-dependent estimates provide a minimum luminosity ratio L2/L1 of 0.2. ChaHa8 is the 4th known spectroscopic brown dwarf or very low-mass stellar binary with determined orbital parameters, and the 2nd known very young one. With an age of only ~3 Myr it is of particular interest to very low-mass formation and evolution theories. While M dwarfs are the most abundant stars in the Milky Way, there is still large uncertainty about their basic physical properties (mass, luminosity, radius, etc.) as well as their formation environment. Precise knowledge of multiplicity characteristics and how they change in this transitional mass region, between Sun-like stars on the one side and very low mass stars and brown dwarfs on the other, provide constraints on low mass star and brown dwarf formation. In the largest M dwarf binary survey to date, we search for companions to active, and thus preferentially young, M dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. We study their binary/multiple properties, such as the multiplicity frequency and distributions of mass ratio and separation, and identify short period visual binaries, for which orbital parameters and hence dynamical mass estimates can be derived in the near future. The observations are carried out in the SDSS i' and z' band using the Lucky Imaging camera AstraLux Sur at the ESO 3.5 m New Technology Telescope. In the first part of the survey, we observed 124 M dwarfs of integrated spectral types M0-M6 and identified 34 new and 17 previously known companions to 44 stars. We derived relative astrometry and component photometry for these systems. More than half of the binaries have separations smaller than 1 arcsec and would have been missed in a simply seeing-limited survey. Correcting our sample for selection effects yields a multiplicity fraction of 32+/-6% for 108 M dwarfs within 52 pc and with angular separations of 0.1-6.0 arcsec, corresponding to projected separation 3-180 AU at median distance 30 pc. Compared to early-type M dwarfs (M>0.3M_Sun), later type (and hence lower mass) M dwarf binaries appear to have closer separations, and more similar masses., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. CARMENES, Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-earths with a Near-infrared Echelle Spectrograph, is a study for a next-generation instrument for the 3.5m Calar Alto Telescope to be designed, built, integrated, and operated by a consortium of nine German and Spanish institutions. We have monitored the benchmark L dwarf binary Kelu-1AB over the past 3 years to derive improved spectral types and luminosities for the individual components. The astrometric measurements enable us to compute the orbital parameters and result in the first dynamical mass estimate for the system. We obtained resolved high angular resolution, near-IR images with HST and the VLT/NACO adaptive optics instrument in the J, H and Ks bands. In addition we used NACO to achieve the first spatially resolved mid-resolution spectra in the H- and K-band for a precise spectral type determination. The near-IR spectrum of Kelu-1A reveals a distinct dip in the H-band providing evidence that Kelu-1 A itself is a spectroscopic binary. We derive spectral types of L0.5+- 0.5 for Kelu- 1 Aa and T7.5+-1 for Kelu-1 Ab. Kelu-1B is classified as spectral type L3pec +-1.5. From the relative orbit, we derive an orbital period of 38 +8 -6 years and a semi-major axis of 6.4+2.4 -1.3 AU. This yields the first dynamically determined total system mass of 177 +113 -55 Mjup for the Kelu-1AB system, with the uncertainties mainly attributed to the error of the system distance measurement and the yet missing apastron passage. The derived properties of Kelu-1AB allow us to test common theoretical models. The comparison of our results with color-magnitude diagrams based on evolutionary models yields a slightly revised age estimate (0.3 - 0.5 Gyr) and a discrepancy between dynamically and theoretically derived masses, stressing the importance for further dynamical mass determinations of brown dwarf binaries., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Since their orbital separations appear to be 1 AU or greater, the binary frequency at < 1 AU might be less than 10%. We report the discovery of a 16-20 Jupiter mass radial velocity companion around the very young (~3 Myr) brown dwarf candidate ChaHa8 (M5.75-M6.5). Based on high-resolution echelle spectra of ChaHa8 taken between 2000 and 2007 with UVES at the VLT, a companion was detected through RV variability with a semi-amplitude of 1.6 km/s. A Kepler fit to the data yields an orbital period of the companion of 1590 days and an eccentricity of e=0.49. A companion minimum mass M2sini between 16 and 20 Jupiter masses is derived when using model-dependent mass estimates for the primary. The mass ratio q= M2/M1 might be as small as 0.2 and, with a probability of 87%, it is less than 0.4. ChaHa8 harbors most certainly the lowest mass companion detected so far in a close (~ 1 AU) orbit around a brown dwarf or very low-mass star. From the uncertainty in the orbit solution, it cannot completely be ruled out that the companion has a mass in the planetary regime. Its discovery is in any case an important step towards RV planet detections around BDs. We present a precise kinematic study of very young brown dwarfs (BDs) in the ChaI cloud based on radial velocities (RVs) measured with UVES / VLT. This is compared to the kinematics of T Tauri stars (TTS) in the same field, based on both own measurements and on RVs from the literature. More UVES spectra were taken compared with a former paper (Joergens & Guenther 2001), and the reduction of the spectra was improved, while studying the literature for RVs of T Tauri stars in ChaI led to a cleaned and enlarged sample of T Tauri stars. The result is an improved empirical RV distribution of BDs as well as of TTS in ChaI. We found that nine BDs/VLMSs (M6-M8) in ChaI have a RV dispersion of 0.9 km/s measured in terms of a standard deviation. This is consistent with the dispersion measured earlier in terms of fwhm of 2.1 km/s. The studied sample of 25 TTS (G2-M5) has a dispersion of 1.3 km/s (standard deviation). The RV dispersion of the BDs is consistent within the errors with that of TTS, which is in line with the finding of no mass dependence in some theoretical models of the ejection-scenario for the formation of brown dwarfs. In contrast to current N-body simulations, we did not find a high-velocity tail for the BDs RVs. We found hints suggesting different kinematics for binaries compared to predominantly single objects in ChaI. The global RV dispersion for ChaI members (1.24 km/s) is significantly lower than for Taurus members (2.0 km/s), despite higher stellar density in ChaI showing that a fundamental increase in velocity dispersion with stellar density of the star-forming region is not established observationally. We present results of a radial velocity (RV) survey for planets and brown dwarf (BD) companions to very young BDs and (very) low-mass stars (VLMSs) in ChaI. High-resolution echelle spectra of ChaHa1-8 and 12 (M6-M8), and B34, CHXR74, Sz23 (M2.5-M5) were taken with UVES / VLT between 2000 and 2004. The achieved precision (40 to 670 m/s) is sufficient to detect Jupiter mass planets around the targets. This first RV survey of very young BDs probes multiplicity which is a key parameter for formation in an as yet unexplored domain, in terms of age, mass, and orbital separation. We find that the subsample of ten BDs and VLMSs (M<0.12 Msun, M5-M8) has constant RVs on time scales of <40 days. For them, estimates of upper limits for masses of hypothetical companions are 0.1 to 1.5 MJup (assuming 0.1 AU). This hints at a rather small multiplicity fraction for very young BDs/VLMSs at <0.1 AU. Furthermore, the non-variable objects demonstrate the lack of any significant RV noise due to stellar activity down to the precision necessary to detect giant planets. Thus, very young BDs and VLMSs are suitable targets for RV surveys for planets. Three objects of the sample exhibit significant RV variations. For Sz23, they might be attributed to surface activity, while for ChaHa8 (M6.5) and CHXR74 (M4.5), the detected RV variations are on times scales of >150 days, which cannot be explained by rotational modulation. An alternative explanation are giant planets / BDs of at least a few Jupiter masses orbiting with periods of several months or longer. Thus, the presented RV data indicate that orbital periods of companions to very young BDs and (V)LMSs are possibly several months or longer, and that orbital separations are > 0.2 AU. We show how the assumption of coeval formation can be used to constrain the effective temperatures of the components of young eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binaries. Our method extends the approach of White et al. (1999) to a two-step analysis. The first step compares evolutionary models to the observed masses and radii and selects those models that predict ages that are consistent with coeval formation. The second step then uses these models to constrain the effective temperatures. We applied the method on literature values of the stellar parameters of the eclipsing binaries RX J0529.4+0041 A and V1174 Ori and confirm that V1174 Ori A has dwarf-like temperatures at an age of 9 Myrs, while we cannot draw any conclusions for RX J0529.4+0041 A and V1174 Ori B. We have studied the photometric variability of very young brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars (masses well below 0.2 M_sun) in the ChaI star forming region. We have determined photometric periods in the Gunn i and R band for the three M6.5-M7 type brown dwarf candidates ChaHa2, ChaHa3 and ChaHa6 of 2.2 to 3.4 days. These are the longest photometric periods found for any brown dwarf so far. If interpreted as rotationally induced they correspond to moderately fast rotational velocities, which is fully consistent with their v sini values and their relatively large radii. We have also determined periods for the two M5-M5.5 type very low-mass stars B34 and CHXR78C. In addition to the Gunn i and R band data, we have analysed JHK_s monitoring data of the targets, which have been taken a few weeks earlier and confirm the periods found in the optical data. Upper limits for the errors in the period determination are between 2 and 9 hours. The observed periodic variations of the brown dwarf candidates as well as of the T Tauri stars are interpreted as modulation of the flux at the rotation period by magnetically driven surface features, on the basis of a consistency with v sini values as well as (R-i) color variations typical for spots. Furthermore, the temperatures even for the brown dwarfs in the sample are relatively high (>2800K) because the objects are very young. Therefore, the atmospheric gas should be sufficiently ionized for the formation of spots on one hand and the temperatures are too high for significant dust condensation and hence variabilities due to clouds on the other hand., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

A photometric monitoring campaign of brown dwarfs in the ChaI star forming region in the i and R band revealed significant periodic variations of the three M6.5-M7 type brown dwarf candidates ChaHa2, 3 and 6 (Joergens et al. 2002). These are the first rotational periods for very young (1-5 Myr) brown dwarfs and among the first rotational periods for brown dwarfs at all. The relatively long periods of 2.2 to 3.4 days as well as vsini values (Joergens & Guenther 2001) indicate that our targets are moderately fast rotators in contrast to very rapidly rotating old brown dwarfs. The periods for the ChaI brown dwarf candidates provide valuable data points in an as yet, in terms of rotational characteristic, almost unexplored region of the age-mass diagram. A comparison with rotational properties of older brown dwarfs indicates that most of the acceleration during the contraction phase takes place within the first 30 Myr or less of the lifetime of a brown dwarf. Based on high-resolution UVES spectra we found that the radial velocity (RV) dispersion of nine of twelve known young bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Cha I dark cloud is 2.0 km/s, i.e. significantly smaller than the RV dispersion of T Tauri stars in Cha I (3.6 km/s) and only slightly larger than the dispersion of the surrounding molecular gas (1.2 km/s) (Mizuno et al. 1999). This result indicates that the majority of these brown dwarfs are not ejected with high velocity out of a dense region as proposed by some formation scenarios for brown dwarfs. The mean RV values are consistent with the objects being kinematic members of Cha I. The RV dispersion of the T Tauri stars confined to the Cha I region is based on a compilation of T Tauri stars with known RVs from the literature plus three T Tauri stars observed with UVES and unpublished RVs for nine T Tauri stars. Time-resolved spectroscopy revealed RV variations for five out of nine of the bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in Cha I, which could be due to orbiting planets or surface features. How frequent are brown dwarf binaries? Do brown dwarfs have planets? Are current theoretical pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks valid down to the substellar regime? - Any detection of a companion to a brown dwarf takes us one step forward towards answering these basic questions of star formation. We report here on a search for spectroscopic and visual companions to young brown dwarfs in the Cha I star forming cloud. Based on spectra taken with UVES at the VLT, we found significant radial velocity (RV) variations for five bona-fide and candidate brown dwarfs in Cha I. They can be caused by either a (substellar or planetary) companion or stellar activity. A companion causing the detected RV variations would have about a few Jupiter masses. We are planning further UVES observations in order to explore the nature of the detected RV variations. We also found that the RV dispersion is only ~ 2km/s indicating that there is probably no run-away brown dwarf among them. High-resolution spectroscopy and photometric monitoring of the pre-main sequence star RXJ1608.6-3922 shows that it is not an eclipsing binary, as previously claimed. Radial velocity measurements covering suitable time spans in order to detect a spectroscopic binary with the claimed period of about 7 days have been performed. The scatter of the radial velocity does not exceed 2.4 km/s, defining an upper mass limit of 24 Jupiter masses for any eclipsing companion orbiting this star with the claimed period. Photometric observations of RXJ1608.6-3922 in 7 consecutive nights (i.e. as long as the claimed orbital period) reveal brightness variations of the order of 0.2 mag with a period of 3.6 days. The shape of the detected light curve differs from a light curve of the star recorded in 1996. The small variations of the radial velocity, the variable shape of the light curve, as well as (B-V) color variations suggest that the flux of RXJ 1608.6-3922 is modulated by spots on the stellar surface with a rotational period of 3.6 days. The stellar activity of this star seems to be highly variable, taking into account the variable shape of the light curve, with an amplitude varying from 0.5 to 0.2 mag in a few years, as well as hints for a variable H$_{\alpha}$ equivalent width., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Observations at high spectral and temporal resolution are presented of the dwarf nova EX Dra in outburst. The disk seen in the He I line reconstructed by Doppler tomography shows a clear two-armed spiral pattern pointing to spiral shocks in the disk. The Balmer and He II maps also give evidence for the presence of spirals. The eclipse as seen in the red continuum indicates a disk radius of 0.31 times the orbital separation, which might be large enough to explain the observed spiral shocks through excitation by the tidal field of the secondary. The eclipse in the Balmer line profiles, well resolved in our observations, indicates a somewhat smaller disk size (0.25). We discuss the possibility that this is related to an optical depth effect in the lines., Comment: accepted (A&A Letter)
