Abstract

Abstract Emissions from fossil fuel exploitation are a leading contributor to global anthropogenic methane emissions, but are highly uncertain. The lack of reliable estimates hinders monitoring of the progress on pledges towards methane reductions. Here we analyze methane emissions from exploitation of coal, oil and gas for major producing nations across a suite of bottom-up inventories and global inversions. Larger disagreement in emissions exists for the oil/gas sector across the inventories compared to coal, arising mostly from disparate data sources for emission factors. Moreover, emissions reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change are lower than other bottom-up and inversion estimates, with many countries lacking reporting in the past decades. Finally, comparison with previous global inversions, revealed a strong influence of the prior inventory on the inferred sub-sectoral emissions magnitude. This study highlights the need to improve consensus on the methodological inputs among the bottom-up inventories in order to obtain more consistent inverse modelling results at the sub-sectoral level.

Abstract

The scrutiny over the carbon footprint of research and higher education has increased rapidly in the last few years. This has resulted in a series of publications providing various estimates of the carbon footprint of one or several research activities, principally at the scale of a university or a research center or, more recently, a field of research. The variety of tools or methodologies on which these estimates rely unfortunately prevents any aggregation or direct comparison. This is because carbon footprint assessments are very sensitive to key parameters (e.g., emission factors) or hypotheses (e.g., scopes). Hence, it is impossible to address fundamental questions such as: is the carbon footprint of research structurally different between disciplines? Are plane trips a major source of carbon emissions in academic research? Massive collection and curation of carbon footprint data, across a large array of research situations and disciplines, is hence an important, timely and necessary challenge to answer these questions. This paper presents a framework to collect and analyse large amounts of homogeneous research carbon emission data in a network of research entities at the national scale. It relies on an open-source web application, GES 1point5 , designed to estimate the carbon footprint of a department, research lab or team in any country of the world. Importantly, GES 1point5 is also designed to aggregate all input data and corresponding GHG emissions estimates into a comprehensive database. GES 1point5 therefore enables (i) the identification of robust local or national determinants of the carbon footprint of research and (ii) the estimation of the carbon footprint of the entire research sector at national scale. A preliminary analysis of the carbon footprint of more than one hundred laboratories in France is presented to illustrate the potential of the framework. It shows that the average emissions are 479 t CO _2 e for a research lab and 3.6 t CO _2 e for an average lab member (respectively 404 and 3.1 t CO _2 e without accounting for the indirect radiative effects of aviation), with the current scope of GES 1point5 . 3. A global tracer release experiment to help estimate OH tropospheric concentrations and benchmark chemistry-transport models

Abstract

Despite the urgent need for reduction of greenhouse gas concentrations, their emissions remain at high levels worldwide. Atmospheric inverse modelling allows to quantify these emissions by leveraging observations of greenhouse gas mole fractions and chemistry-transport models. However, this technique largely relies on models with an imperfect representation of transport and chemical processes and the resulting errors propagate to emission estimates. Atmospheric scientists can improve their models by comparing simulated processes against available observational data.One efficient, although challenging, way of acquiring such validation data is to perform a tracer release experiment. It consists of releasing one or multiple decaying tracers into the atmosphere at one or multiple locations in the world, and then observe their time-evolving mixing ratios to understand transport pathways, mixing and decay rates. To the best of our knowledge, tracer release experiments have only been performed at local or regional scales to study transport processes, but never at the global scale. A global tracer release experiment could generate invaluable data against which to compare model outputs. However, modelers must be able to disentangle transport and chemical processes from the data, which requires that the experiment be carefully designed. Subject to this requirement being met, it could help to better quantify and even reduce 1) transport errors by investigating inter- and intra-hemispheric transport and 2) chemistry errors by constraining OH tropospheric concentrations. These data could also help to create a benchmarking methodology to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the regional and global models that are currently used to quantify greenhouse gas emissions.Here, we present design considerations for such a global tracer release experiment based on simulations with the 3-D chemistry-transport model ICON-ART. Our first results indicate that releasing several hundred tons of two tracers with different lifetimes as pulses could be sufficient to obtain a good estimate of OH concentrations along the parcel trajectories. This method could be applied at different locations in order to sample a large part of the world and at different times, e.g., to account for seasonal variations in OH concentrations. However, we also show that many parameters influence the results and therefore we enumerate the benefits but also the limits of such an experiment.

Abstract

The scrutiny over the carbon footprint of academics has increased rapidly in the last few years. This has resulted in a series of publications providing various estimates of the carbon footprint of one or several research activities, principally at the scale of a university or a research center or, more recently, a field of research. The variety of tools or methodologies - on which these estimates rely - unfortunately prevents from any direct comparison because of the sensitivity of carbon footprint assessments to variations in the scope and to key parameters such as emission factors. In an effort to enabling a robust comparison of research carbon footprints across institutions, contexts or disciplines, we present an open-source web application, GES 1point5 designed to estimate the carbon footprint of a department, research lab or team in any country of the world with a transparent and common methodology. The current version of GES 1point5, open-source and freely available, takes into account the most common and often predominant emission sources in research labs: buildings, digital devices, commuting, and professional travel. GES 1point5 is developed by an interdisciplinary team of scientists from several public research institutions in France as part of the Labos 1point5 project. GES 1point5 is therefore presently tailored for the French context but can be adjusted to any national contexts by adjusting the values of emission factors. The versatility and usability of the software have been empirically validated by its adoption by several hundred research labs in France over the last 18 months. In addition to enabling the estimation and monitoring of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the scale of a research lab, GES 1point5 is designed to aggregate the data entered by the labs and the corresponding GHG emissions estimates into a comprehensive database. GES 1point5 can therefore allow to (i) identify robust determinants of the carbon footprint of research activities across a network of research labs (ii) estimate the carbon footprint of research at the national scale. A preliminary analysis of the carbon footprint of more than one hundred laboratories is presented to illustrate the potential of the approach. While assessments of carbon footprints are often externalized onto extension services and proprietary softwares, GES 1point5 is designed as a hands-on, pedagogic and transparent tool for research labs to monitor and reduce their own carbon footprint. This internalization has strong positive co-benefits for academics in terms of awareness and empowerment. We further expect that international dissemination of GES 1point5 will contribute to establishing a global understanding of the drivers of the research carbon footprint worldwide and an identification of the levers to decrease it.Availability and implementationGES 1point5 is available online at http://labos1point5.org/ges-1point5 and its source code can be downloaded from the GitLab platform at https://framagit.org/labos1point5/l1p5-vuejs.
