- Abstract
Manganese-rich phases have been detected in situ on Mars by the NASA Opportunity and Curiosity rovers, and in the martian meteorite NWA 7034 (and its pairs). Notably, instruments on Curiosity in Gale crater have detected Mn-rich materials in many geologic contexts, including fracture fills, coatings, nodules, and cements; this variety suggests a complex, long-term manganese cycle or cycles in the region. The origins of these materials is not well understood, but their existence points to strongly oxidizing aqueous environments in Mars’ distant past. On Earth today, manganese cycling is primarily mediated by microbes, making manganese minerals on Mars important targets for detailed study. On Earth, a significant geologic setting for Mn-rich materials is rock varnish, a dark, shiny coatings composed of Mn- and Fe-oxides and clays. Varnishes are ubiquitous in arid environments on Earth and have recently been shown to be produced and modified by microbial communities. Such varnishes have long been predicted for Mars (as an abiotic feature) but have not been observed until now. In Jezero crater, the SuperCam and Mastcam-Z instruments on the Perseverance rover have now documented a dark, shiny, Mn-rich coating on the rock Hogback Mountain, which is in the Hogwallow Flats region of Jezero Delta sediments. SuperCam laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyses of 30- and 150-shot depth profiles penetrated through a thin, Mn-rich layer with MnO as high as 30 wt% (avg 11 wt% MnO over all shots). Preliminary chemistry results suggest that Ni is positively correlated with Mn; this is consistent with a Mn-oxide mineral, which adsorb Ni, Co, and other metals when available. Acoustic data from the SuperCam microphone obtained concurrently with the LIBS depth profiles show that the high-Mn coating is relatively hard, and that material properties change beneath the coating at ~40 shots (~12 µm) depth, in good agreement with the LIBS chemistry data. SuperCam reflectance spectra (0.40-0.85 um, 1.3-2.6 µm) of the coating suggest contributions from phyllosilicates and likely Mn-bearing minerals, including but not limited to birnessite, [(Na,Ca)0.5(Mn4+,Mn3+)2O4·1.5H2O]), which is the most common Mn-oxide in terrestrial rock varnish. So far, Hogback Mountain is the only SuperCam target with such high Mn. However, Mastcam-Z multispectral observations suggest that similar Mn-rich coatings are present on rock surfaces throughout the area. On Earth, varnish formation (and Mn-mineral formation in general) is associated with organic materials. Notably, at the nearby Berry Hollow abrasion patch, high intensity fluorescence signals indicate that possible organics were found by the SHERLOC instrument. Further investigation of these signals and colocated Raman signals is ongoing. This observation of a varnish-like coating on Mars represents a new geologic context for Mn-bearing minerals on that planet that expands the range of environments known to produce these materials, and opens up new opportunities to answer questions about potential biosignatures on Mars.

- Abstract
The Micro Context Camera (MCC) of PIXL onboard Perseverance has successfully completed commissioning. It meets all requirements and has led to the first proximity science using the PIXL instrument. This abstract presents the inflight system performance. The pre-launch calibration of the MCC system has been verified on the surface of Mars. Distance measurements to Martian Rock surfaces are performed at with an accuracy better than 100 µm. This is accomplished utilizing Structured Light over the full diurnal thermal environment on the surface of Mars. The PIXL sensor unit is mounted on the turret of the Mars Perseverance rover arm. This autonomous navigation capability has enabled safe approaches of rugged surfaces, without ground intervention or interaction with e.g. a touch plate. It has also enabled proximity science of the Martian surface at unprecedented accuracy. The autonomy further enables PIXL to capture high resolution XRF scans while continuously maintaining optimal distance and focus of the X-ray beam. The system’s performance is robust enough for PIXL to navigate relative to both abraded and natural surfaces. The MCC also has the capability of multispectral imaging. This has provided information for the interpretation of surface lithology and it also provides additional information for the XRF measurements interpretation due to its high resolution. The MCC’s Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN) autonomous functionality has also been demonstrated in the Martian environment. This capability is essential for PIXL to maintain the planned scan trajectory relative to the rock surface – as PIXL’s longer duration scans (up to 10 hours) is relying on stability and capability to compensate for the diurnal thermal environment causing position drift relative to the Martian rock surface. We present the measured performance on Mars. This show that the system performs reliably on both high and low topography rock surfaces with and without dust coverage. This has enabled PIXL to autonomously track and self-correct for any drift away from the planned scan trajectory.

Stack, K. et al., The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover landing site is located within Jezero crater, a ∼50km diameter impact crater interpreted to be a Noachian-aged lake basin inside the western edge of the Isidis impact structure. Jezero hosts remnants of a fluvial delta, inlet and outlet valleys, and infill deposits containing diverse carbonate, mafic, and hydrated minerals. Prior to the launch of the Mars 2020 mission, members of the Science Team collaborated to produce a photogeologic map of the Perseverance landing site in Jezero crater. Mapping was performed at a 1:5000 digital map scale using a 25 cm/pixel High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) orthoimage mosaic base map and a 1 m/pixel HiRISE stereo digital terrain model. Mapped bedrock and surficial units were distinguished by differences in relative brightness, tone, topography, surface texture, and apparent roughness. Mapped bedrock units are generally consistent with those identified in previously published mapping efforts, but this study’s map includes the distribution of surficial deposits and sub-units of the Jezero delta at a higher level of detail than previous studies. This study considers four possible unit correlations to explain the relative age relationships of major units within the map area. Unit correlations include previously published interpretations as well as those that consider more complex interfingering relationships and alternative relative age relationships. The photogeologic map presented here is the foundation for scientific hypothesis development and strategic planning for Perseverance’s exploration of Jezero crater., With funding from the Spanish government through the "María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence" accreditation (MDM-2017-0737)

International audience; The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on the Mars Science Laboratory's Curiosity rover began making detailed measurements of the cosmic ray and energetic particle radiation environment on the surface of Mars on 7 August 2012. We report and discuss measurements of the absorbed dose and dose equivalent from galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles on the martian surface for similar to 300 days of observations during the current solar maximum. These measurements provide insight into the radiation hazards associated with a human mission to the surface of Mars and provide an anchor point with which to model the subsurface radiation environment, with implications for microbial survival times of any possible extant or past life, as well as for the preservation of potential organic biosignatures of the ancient martian environment.

Mars' Atmosphere from Curiosity The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars in August last year is designed to study the chemical and isotopic composition of the martian atmosphere. Mahaffy et al. (p. 263 ) present volume-mixing ratios of Mars' five major atmospheric constituents (CO 2 , Ar, N 2 , O 2 , and CO) and isotope measurements of 40 Ar/ 36 Ar and C and O in CO 2 , based on data from one of SAM's instruments, obtained between 31 August and 21 November 2012. Webster et al. (p. 260 ) used data from another of SAM's instruments obtained around the same period to determine isotope ratios of H, C, and O in atmospheric CO 2 and H 2 O. Agreement between the isotopic ratios measured by SAM with those of martian meteorites, measured in laboratories on Earth, confirms the origin of these meteorites and implies that the current atmospheric reservoirs of CO 2 and H 2 O were largely established after the period of early atmospheric loss some 4 billion years ago.
