The citizen Continental-America Telescopic Eclipse (CATE) Experiment was a new type of citizen science experiment designed to capture a time sequence of white-light coronal observations during totality from 17:16 to 18:48 UT on 2017 August 21. Using identical instruments the CATE group imaged the inner corona from 1 to 2.1 RSun with 1.″43 pixels at a cadence of 2.1 s. A slow coronal mass ejection (CME) started on the SW limb of the Sun before the total eclipse began. An analysis of CATE data from 17:22 to 17:39 UT maps the spatial distribution of coronal flow velocities from about 1.2 to 2.1 RSun, and shows the CME material accelerates from about 0 to 200 km s−1 across this part of the corona. This CME is observed by LASCO C2 at 3.1–13 RSun with a constant speed of 254 km s−1. The CATE and LASCO observations are not fit by either constant acceleration nor spatially uniform velocity change, and so the CME acceleration mechanism must produce variable acceleration in this region of the corona.

SUMMARY: Vascular access has been used medically for centuries. the history of access includes the ancient practise of venesection or phlebotomy, and its complications; recognition of the circulation of the blood; the first attempts at blood transfusion by Richard Lower; the description of traumatic A-V fistulae by William Hunter; and the development of vascular surgery. After the introduction of haemodialysis, the cornerstone of vascular access remains the primary direct internal A-V fistula as described by Brescia et al. in 1966. Modern vascular grafts achieve suitable access with increased rates of complications and failure; and, less than half the longevity of fistulae.

A method is described for the purification from porcine small intestine of enterogastrone, an inhibitor of gastric secretory and motor functions. The enterogastrone activity obtained from an acetic acid extract of the duodenum was further concentrated by differential adsorption on alginic acid, elution with 0.2 m HCl, precipitation with sodium chloride and reprecipitation from aqueous ethanol with 1-butanol. Further purification of the active material was done by gel filtration on Sephadex G-50 and chromatography and rechromatography on TEAE cellulose. The enterogastrone concentrate obtained was found to be a potent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion and motility and it was not contaminated with other gastrointestinal hormones or toxic substances.

1. 1. A study was made of the water-soluble phosphate compounds of combined leukocytes and purified lymphocytes and garnulocytes from fresh horse blood collected in heparin. 2. 2. The lymphocytes and granulocytes were each isolated in large quantities and high purity, after centrifugal separation from erythrocytes and platelets, by using columns of special glass beads. 3. 3. The phosphate compounds, which include nucleotides and glucolytic intermediates, were isolated from trichloroacetic acid extracts of the cells by chromatographic procedures in Dowex 1 (formate) columns and identified by a variety of chemical and enzymatic methods.

SummaryThe metabolic path of aceto-acetate-3-C14 in the isolated dog heart has been determined using the isotopic distribution in the endogenous malate and succinate as an internal metabolic indicator. Isotopic carbon was found exclusively in the carboxyl groups of malate and succinate as would be expected if acetoacetate was being utilized only by the established path (acetoacetate - → 2 “acetate” → 4 C02 via the tricarboxylic acid cycle). This is taken as corroborative evidence for our previous conclusion that ketone bodies per se are not responsible for the net increase in cardiac glycogen noted in ketonemia.

Citrate synthesis from acetate and oxalacetate by rachitic and control rat tissue slices has been determined. No difference between kidney, liver, heart and gut was observed. Evidence for a vitamin D effect in cartilage was obtained. In comparison to controls, the rachitic tissue exhibited a general depression of citrate metabolism manifested by less endogenous citrate, which was utilized more slowly, and a diminished ability to synthesize citrate from its precursors.

SummaryThe intravenous injection of large amounts of acetoacetate-3-C14 has been effected under conditions reported to cause a net increase in heart glycogen. Isolation and degradation of the cardiac glycogen failed to divulge any trace of radioactivity. It thus appears that the net increase in heart carbohydrate accompanying ketonemia represents some secondary and yet undetermined influence of ketone bodies.

Since the introduction by Flocks and others 1 of the concept and technique of employing radioactive gold (AU 198 ) in the treatment of prostatic carcinoma, we have been interested in this fresh approach and the promising results obtained. We have found Flocks' operative method completely satisfactory. The technique for concentrating a solution of radioactive gold in the prostate gland consists of the direct injection of the material into the organ suprapubically, retropubically, and through a spinal needle inserted perineally. Obviously, certain problems are involved with any method that includes use of radioactive isotopes. The broad principles involved in this operation may be briefly summarized as follows: 1. The radioactive gold must be injected in such a manner as to assure maximum diffusion of the solution throughout the prostate gland. 2. Retrograde leakage through the tract produced by the needle should be minimal. 3. Depth of the injection must be completely

In mice fasted for 17 hours, administration of enterogastrone purified from hog duodenum reduced the food intake. This effect was greatest during the first 30 minutes, but the cumulative reduction continued for at least 4 hours. Other peptides prepared from hog duodenum or colon, as well as glucagon, secretin, glucose, and bovine serum albumin, were ineffective.
