The objective of this study was to determine the coverage and factors of PNC in The Gambia.Methods: The 2018 data from The Gambia Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) were analyzed. Data from 9205 women with ages 15– 49 years, who also have given birth, were extracted for the analysis. Percentages and Chi-square tests were used. In addition, multivariable logistic regression model was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratios (with corresponding 95% CI). The level of significance was set at p< 0.05.Results: The prevalence of PNC was 22.4% and 26.7% for women and children, respectively. Local government area (LGA) was associated with PNC for women and children alike. Furthermore, ethnicity was associated with PNC among women in The Gambia. Women who listened to radio almost every day had 1.51 increase in the odds of PNC (OR= 1.51; 95% CI: 1.15, 1.98) and 1.30 increase in the odds of PNC for children (OR= 1.30; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.67), respectively, when compared with women who do not listen to radio. Women who initiated antenatal care (ANC) at second or third trimester (late booking) had a 22% reduction in the odds of PNC (OR= 0.78; 95% CI: 0.64, 0.94), when compared with women who booked at first trimester.Conclusion: The findings showed that geographical locations, ethnicity, use of radio, and timing to antenatal care initiation were associated with PNC. Women’s enlightenment and early ANC programs can be designed to improve PNC coverage.Keywords: maternal health, post-delivery care, antenatal care, postpartum stay, skilled delivery

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is often associated with chorioamnionitis and leads to increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism. Preterm birth can lead to cerebellar underdevelopment, but the mechanisms of disrupted cerebellar development in preterm infants are not well understood. The cerebellum is consistently affected in people with autism spectrum disorders, showing reduction of Purkinje cells, decreased cerebellar grey matter, and altered connectivity. METHODS: Preterm rhesus macaque fetuses were exposed to intra-amniotic LPS (1 mg, E. coli O55:B5) at 127 days (80%) gestation and delivered by c-section 5 days after injections. Maternal and fetal plasma were sampled for cytokine measurements. Chorio-decidua was analyzed for immune cell populations by flow cytometry. Fetal cerebellum was sampled for histology and molecular analysis by single-nuclei RNA-sequencing (snRNA-seq) on a 10× chromium platform. snRNA-seq data were analyzed for differences in cell populations, cell-type specific gene expression, and inferred cellular communications. RESULTS: We leveraged snRNA-seq of the cerebellum in a clinically relevant rhesus macaque model of chorioamnionitis and preterm birth, to show that chorioamnionitis leads to Purkinje cell loss and disrupted maturation of granule cells and oligodendrocytes in the fetal cerebellum at late gestation. Purkinje cell loss is accompanied by decreased sonic hedgehog signaling from Purkinje cells to granule cells, which show an accelerated maturation, and to oligodendrocytes, which show accelerated maturation from pre-oligodendrocytes into myelinating oligodendrocytes. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest a role of chorioamnionitis on disrupted cerebellar maturation associated with preterm birth and on the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders among preterm infants.

INTRODUCTION: IL6 signaling plays an important role in triggering labor and IL6 is an established biomarker of intrauterine infection/inflammation (IUI) driven preterm labor (PTL). The biology of IL6 during IUI at the maternal-fetal interface was investigated in samples from human subjects and non-human primates (NHP). METHODS: Pregnant women with histologic chorioamnionitis diagnosed by placenta histology were recruited (n=28 term, n=43 for preterm pregnancies from 26-36 completed weeks of gestation). IUI was induced in Rhesus macaque by intraamniotic injection of lipopolysachharide (LPS, n=23). IL1 signaling was blocked using Anakinra (human IL-1 receptor antagonist, n=13), and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling was blocked by anti TNF-antibody (Adalimumab n=14). The blockers were given before LPS. All animals including controls (intraamniotic injection of saline n=27), were delivered 16h after LPS/saline exposure at about 80% gestation. RESULTS: IUI induced a robust expression of IL6 mRNAs in the fetal membranes (chorion-amnion-decidua tissue) both in humans (term and preterm) and NHP. The major sources of IL6 mRNA expression were the amnion mesenchymal cells (AMC) and decidua stroma cells. Additionally, during IUI in the NHP, ADAM17 (a protease that cleaves membrane bound IL6 receptor (IL6R) to release a soluble form) and IL6R mRNA increased in the fetal membranes, and the ratio of IL6 and soluble forms of IL6R, gp130 increased in the amniotic fluid signifying upregulation of IL6 trans-signaling. Both IL1 and TNF blockade suppressed LPS-induced IL6 mRNAs in the AMC and variably decreased elements of IL6 trans-signaling. DISCUSSION: These data suggest that IL1 and TNF blockers may be useful anti-inflammatory agents via suppression of IL6 signaling at the maternal-fetal interface.

On 5 April 2024, 10:23 a.m. local time, a moment magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Tewksbury Township, New Jersey, about 65 km west of New York City. Millions of people from Virginia to Maine and beyond felt the ground shaking, resulting in the largest number (>180,000) of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) “Did You Feel It?” reports of any earthquake. A team deployed by the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance Association and the National Institute of Standards and Technology documented structural and nonstructural damage, including substantial damage to a historic masonry building in Lebanon, New Jersey. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported a focal depth of about 5 km, consistent with a lack of signal in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data. The focal mechanism solution is strike slip with a substantial thrust component. Neither mechanism’s nodal plane is parallel to the primary northeast trend of geologic discontinuities and mapped faults in the region, including the Ramapo fault. However, many of the relocated aftershocks, for which locations were augmented by temporary seismic deployments, form a cluster that parallels the general northeast trend of the faults. The aftershocks lie near the Tewksbury fault, north of the Ramapo fault.

Intrauterine infection/inflammation (IUI) is a frequent complication of pregnancy leading to preterm labor and fetal inflammation. How inflammation is modulated at the maternal-fetal interface is unresolved. We compared transcriptomics of amnion (a fetal tissue in contact with amniotic fluid) in a preterm Rhesus macaque model of IUI induced by lipopolysaccharide with human cohorts of chorioamnionitis. Bulk RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) amnion transcriptomic profiles were remarkably similar in both Rhesus and human subjects and revealed that induction of key labor-mediating genes such as IL1 and IL6 was dependent on nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling and reversed by the anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antibody Adalimumab. Inhibition of collagen biosynthesis by IUI was partially restored by Adalimumab. Interestingly, single-cell transcriptomics, flow cytometry, and immunohistology demonstrated that a subset of amnion mesenchymal cells (AMCs) increase CD14 and other myeloid cell markers during IUI both in the human and Rhesus macaque. Our data suggest that CD14+ AMCs represent activated AMCs at the maternal-fetal interface.

Abstract Background Antenatal steroid therapy for fetal lung maturation is routinely administered to women at risk of preterm delivery. There is strong evidence to demonstrate benefit from antenatal steroids in terms of survival and respiratory disease, notably in infants delivered at or below 32 weeks’ gestation. However, dosing remains unoptimized and lung benefits are highly variable. Current treatment regimens generate high-concentration, pulsatile fetal steroid exposures now associated with increased risk of childhood neurodevelopmental diseases. We hypothesized that damage-associated changes in the fetal hippocampal transcriptome would be independent of preterm lung function. Methods Date-mated ewes carrying a single fetus at 122 ± 2dGA (term = 150dGA) were randomized into 4 groups: (i) Saline Control Group, 4×2ml maternal saline intramuscular(IM) injections at 12hr intervals (n = 11); or (ii) Dex High Group, 2×12mg maternal IM dexamethasone phosphate injections at 12hr intervals followed by 2×2ml IM saline injections at 12hr intervals (n = 12; representing a clinical regimen used in Singapore); or (iii) Dex Low Group, 4×1.5mg maternal IM dexamethasone phosphate injections 12hr intervals (n = 12); or (iv) Beta-Acetate Group, 1×0.125mg/kg maternal IM betamethasone acetate injection followed by 3×2ml IM sterile normal saline injections 12hr intervals (n = 8). Lambs were surgically delivered 48hr after first maternal injection at 122–125dGA, ventilated for 30min to establish lung function, and euthanised for necropsy and tissue collection. Results Preterm lambs from the Dex Low and Beta-Acetate Groups had statistically and biologically significant lung function improvements (measured by gas exchange, lung compliance). Objectives: This study outlines the journey of an online university to evaluate faculty performance standards, key performance indicators, and systems for quality assurance using an appreciative inquiry summit model. The study reveals the power of "quality appreciation" as an approach that elicits a shared vision for quality definitions and standards and serves as a historical marker in the higher education shift from data-driven faculty performance approaches to strengths-based, inclusive methods. Method: The retrospective business case outlines one university's 2018 Appreciative Inquiry Summit, 5D (define, discover, dream, design, destiny/deliver) approach, resulting deliverables, lessons learned, and conclusions. Results: The summit and subsequent quality appreciation processes laid a foundation for inclusive leadership and inclusive teaching and learning. Quality appreciation was observed to be a third component to quality enhancement that had heretofore included quality control and quality assurance mechanisms. Quality appreciation, based on appreciative inquiry (AI) approaches, is a method for uncovering the positive core of an organization that results in ideal quality standards, definitions, and desires for ongoing quality creation. Conclusions: This case provides a view of one university's building upon data-driven methods for faculty performance evaluation. The use of appreciative inquiry to advance a quality appreciation agenda and human-centered approaches served as a stepping-stone toward a vision for inclusive, strengths-based quality enhancement. Implication for Theory and/or Practice: Quality control mechanisms and systems for quality assurance are supported by quality appreciation. In this case, faculty quality appreciation is the integration of AI practices with ongoing evaluation and identification of faculty and classroom quality standards. Quality Appreciation leads to strengthened definitions of quality that are values-driven and founded in the heart and soul of the university's teaching and learning.

Puerto Rico is part of the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands microplate, along the Caribbean–North American plate boundary between the Puerto Rico trench subduction zone and the Muertos Trough incipient subduction zone. Despite recent seismicity and geodetically constrained deformation of ~3 mm/yr of left-lateral shear across the island, Quaternary fault locations remain largely uncertain. Preservation of recent faulting in the landscape is masked by distributed faulting, high weathering rates of the tropical climate, steep topography, widespread landsliding, and extensive agriculture, deforestation, and urbanization throughout the island. We present an updated active fault map of Puerto Rico, created through neotectonic mapping using historical aerial imagery from the 1930s-60s and < 1-m lidar topography, integrated with field observations, to create an updated active fault map of Puerto Rico. We focus on faults that offset younger geomorphic surfaces, with ages estimated by geologic mapping, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating, and morphologic interpretations. We present new evidence for Quaternary activity on seven faults, including the South Lajas, Salinas, Punta Montalva, Great Southern Puerto Rico, Cerro Goden, Parguera, and San Marcos faults. We find that active faulting occurs preferentially near the southern and western coasts and in part spatially coincides with preexisting bedrock faults, possibly reflecting reactivation of some older faults in the modern strain field.

Background: In the U.S. alone, medication non-adherence is estimated to cause 1 in 10 hospitalizations, approximately 125,000 deaths annually, and cost the U.S. healthcare system just under $300 billion each year. Patients in medically underserved areas (MUAs) are particularly vulnerable to all forms of non-adherence and downstream morbidity and mortality; however, the extent to which primary medication non-adherence (i.e., prescription abandonment) affects the underserved is still largely unknown. Objectives: To assess the difference in rates of abandonment of quality measured prescriptions in areas that are medically underserved compared to areas that are not. The secondary objective is to assess the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on rates of prescription abandonment in both MUAs and those that are not. Methods: In this retrospective study, data on abandoned, quality measured prescriptions were collected and analyzed using Chi-Square analyses from one regional division of a large grocery-chain pharmacy containing ninety-one pharmacies located in Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Missouri. The primary objective used 2019 data while the secondary objective used data from April – November of both 2019 and 2020. Background: Treating speech and language problems in repaired cleft palate patients in India is still an uphill task due to lack of facilities. This study attempted to use parents as team members for the speech management of cleft palate patients in Andhra Pradesh, India. Objectives: To investigate whether a positive change in speech understandability for individuals with cleft palate will result from a parent-administered intervention program. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight parents had enrolled for the speech camp held in September 2004. The parent-training program at the speech camp ensured that parents were given adequate awareness. Out of the 28, 18 (64.28%) reported for one follow-up, referred to in this article as Group I. Ten (35.72%) out of the 28 came for two consecutive follow-ups, referred to in this article as Group II. Results: Pre and post training understandability scores obtained in the known context (reciting a familiar poem in the native language, counting 1 to 10) and unknown context (peer group names, family information, describing their journey from home to hospital) for Group I and Group II were evaluated. Results revealed that a higher percentage of cases showed significant improvement in understandability in the unknown context after treatment. Unknown context can be considered a measure to assess speech understandability after training. Further, it shows that parent training without practice at home may not show the desired results. Conclusion: This study reveals that parents can effect a positive change in the speech understandability of their children following training, provided the exercises are carried out regularly at home and the parents report for the follow-up assessments and guidance.

Abstract Community treatment of hypertension in sub‐Saharan Africa is hampered by gaps at several stages of the care cascade. We compared blood pressure (BP) levels (systolic, diastolic and pulse pressures) in four groups of participants by hypertension and treatment status. We conducted a nationally representative survey of adults 35 years and older using a multistage sampling strategy based on the 2013 Gambia Population and Housing Census. The BP measurements were taken in triplicate 5 min apart, and the average of the last two measurements was used for analysis. Systolic and diastolic BP levels and pulse pressure were compared by hypertension status using mean and 95% confidence intervals (CI). 53.1% of the sample were normotensive with mean systolic BP (SBP) of 119.2 mmHg (95% CI, 118.7–119.6) and diastolic BP (DBP) of 78.1 mmHg (77.8–78.3). Among individuals with hypertension, mean SBP was 148.7 mmHg (147.7–149.7) among those unaware of their hypertension, 152.2 mmHg (151.0–153.5) among treated individuals and was highest in untreated individuals at 159.3 mmHg (157.3–161.2). The findings were similar for DBP levels, being 93.9 mmHg (93.4–94.4) among the unaware, 95.1 mmHg (94.4–95.8) among the treated and highest at 99.1 mmHg (98.1–100.2) in untreated participants. SBP and DBP were higher in men, and SBP was as expected higher in those aged ≥55 years. BP level was similar in urban and rural areas. Our data shows high BP levels among participants with hypertension including those receiving treatment. Efforts to reduce the health burden of hypertension will require inputs at all levels of the care cascade.

Abstract Little is known about SARS-CoV-2 infection risk in African countries with high levels of infection-driven immunity and low vaccine coverage. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 349 participants from 52 households in The Gambia between March 2021 and June 2022, with routine weekly SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR and 6-monthly SARS-CoV-2 serology. Attack rates of 45% and 57% were seen during Delta and Omicron BA.1 waves respectively. Eighty-four percent of RT-PCR-positive infections were asymptomatic. Children under 5-years had a lower incidence of infection than 18-49-year-olds. One prior SARS-CoV-2 infection reduced infection risk during the Delta wave only, with immunity from ≥2 prior infections required to reduce the risk of infection with early Omicron lineage viruses. In an African population with high levels of infection-driven immunity and low vaccine coverage, we find high attack rates during SARS-CoV-2 waves, with a high proportion of asymptomatic infections and young children remaining relatively protected from infection.

BackgroundExtremely preterm (EPT) birth has been related to dysregulation of stress responses and behavioral/learning problems at school age. Early adverse experiences can blunt HPA axis reactivity. We hypothesized that an attenuated cortisol awakening response would be associated with developmental and behavioral problems at school age in EPT children.MethodsThis secondary analysis of a sub-cohort of the SUPPORT study included children born between 24 and 27 weeks, evaluated at 6-7 years with a neurodevelopmental battery and cortisol measures. Differences were tested between EPT and a term-born group. Relationships of cortisol awakening response to test scores were analyzed.ResultsCortisol was measured in 110 EPT and 29 term-born 6-7 year olds. Unadjusted WISC-IV and NEPSY-II scores were significantly worse among EPT children only. Conners Parent Rating Scale behavior scores were significantly worse among EPT children. After adjusting for covariates, blunted cortisol awakening responses were found to be associated with poorer scores on memory tests and greater problems with inattention for the EPT group (p

IntroductionChorioamnionitis is common in preterm birth and associated with a higher risk of intestinal inflammation and necrotizing enterocolitis. The intestinal inflammation influences the enteric nervous system development. We hypothesized that inflammation and innervation in the fetal ileum may be modified by chorioamnionitis induced by repeated challenge with lipopolysaccharide and/or preexisting Ureaplasma parvum infection at very low gestational age equivalent to 60% of term.Materials and methodsTime mated ovine fetuses were exposed by intraamniotic injections to chronic Ureaplasma parvum for 24 days and/or lipopolysaccharide for 7 days, 2 days, or 7 & 2 days before delivery at 94 +/-2 days of gestational age (term at approximately 150 days). Intestinal inflammation as well as structural changes of the enteric nervous system were assessed.ResultsLipopolysaccharide exposure increased CD3 and myeloperoxidase-positive cells (p < 0.05). Repetitive exposure to lipopolysaccharide or combined Ureaplasma parvum & lipopolysaccharide exposure increased intestinal inflammation (p < 0.05). The reduction of nuclei of neurons was most significant with repetitive lipopolysaccharide exposures but could be detected in all other intervention groups compared to the control group. Astrocyte-like glial cells increased if exposure to lipopolysaccharide was only 2 days before delivery or chronic exposure to Ureaplasma parvum existed beforehand (p < 0.05).DiscussionAfter exposure to chorioamnionitis induced by Ureaplasma parvum and/or lipopolysaccharide, inflammatory responses as well as structural changes of the enteric nervous system were more pronounced the longer and the more frequent the exposure to pro-inflammatory stimuli before birth. These changes may cause functional effects of clinical importance.

Abstract Chorioamnionitis is frequently associated with preterm deliveries before 30 weeks gestation. Chorioamnionitis correlates both with an increased risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and with a decreased risk of respiratory distress syndrome. Both interleukin-1α and endotoxin can induce inflammation in the fetal lungs and lung maturation after preterm birth when given by intra-amniotic injection. Inflammation can also result in an arrest of alveolarization, and this lung developmental abnormality is prominent in the lungs of preterm infants that die of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The mechanisms by which infection/inflammation can have both beneficial and injurious effects on the preterm lung remain to be characterized.

BackgroundTo effectively control tuberculosis (TB), it is crucial to distinguish between active TB disease and latent TB infection (LTBI) to provide appropriate treatment. However, no such tests are currently available. Immune responses associated with active TB and LTBI are dynamic and exhibit distinct patterns. Comparing these differences is crucial for developing new diagnostic methods and understanding the etiology of TB. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between pro- and anti-inflammatory CD4+ cytokine production following stimulation with two types of latency-associated Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) antigens to allow differentiation between active TB and LTBI.MethodsCryopreserved PBMCs from patients with active TB disease or LTBI were stimulated overnight with replication-related antigen [ESAT-6/CFP-10 (E/C)] or two latency-associated antigens [heparin-binding hemagglutinin (HBHA) and alpha-crystallin-like protein (Acr)]. Responses were analyzed using multiparameter flow cytometry: active TB disease (n=15), LTBI (n=15) and ELISA: active TB disease (n=26) or LTBI (n=27).ResultsCD4+ central memory T cells (Tcm) specific to E/C and CD4+ effector memory T cells specific to Acr and HBHA were higher in LTBI than in TB patients. IFN-γ+Tcm and IL-17+ Tem cells was higher in the LTBI group (p= 0.012 and p=0.029 respectively), but IL-10+ Tcm was higher in the active TB group (p= 0.029) following HBHA stimulation. Additionally, following stimulation with HBHA, IL-10 production from CD4+ T cells was significantly elevated in patients with active TB compared to those with LTBI (p= 0.0038), while CD4+ T cell production of IL-17 and IFN-γ was significantly elevated in LTBI compared to active TB (p= 0.0076, p< 0.0001, respectively). HBHA also induced more CCR6+IL-17+CD4Tcells and IL-17+FoxP3+CD25+CD4Tcells in LTBI than in TB patients (P=0.026 and P=0.04, respectively). HBHA also induced higher levels of IFN-γ+IL-10+CD4+ T cells in patients with active TB (Pp=0.03) and higher levels of IFN-γ+IL-17+ CD4+ T cells in those with LTBI (p=0.04). HBHA-specific cytokine production measured using ELISA showed higher levels of IFN-γ in participants with LTBI (P=0.004) and higher levels of IL-10 in those with active TB (P=0.04).ConclusionStimulation with HBHA and measurement of CD4+ T cell production of IFN-γ, IL-10, and IL-17 could potentially differentiate active TB from LTBI. The characteristics of cytokine-expressing cells induced by HBHA also differed between participants with active TB and LTBI.

Accurate estimate of fetal maturity could provide individualized guidance for delivery of complicated pregnancies. However, current methods are invasive, have low accuracy, and are limited to fetal lung maturation. To identify diagnostic gestational biomarkers, we performed transcriptomic profiling of lung and brain, as well as cell-free RNA from amniotic fluid of preterm and term rhesus macaque fetuses. These data identify potentially new and prior-associated gestational age differences in distinct lung and neuronal cell populations when compared with existing single-cell and bulk RNA-Seq data. Comparative analyses found hundreds of genes coincidently induced in lung and amniotic fluid, along with dozens in brain and amniotic fluid. These data enable creation of computational models that accurately predict lung compliance from amniotic fluid and lung transcriptome of preterm fetuses treated with antenatal corticosteroids. Importantly, antenatal steroids induced off-target gene expression changes in the brain, impinging upon synaptic transmission and neuronal and glial maturation, as this could have long-term consequences on brain development. Cell-free RNA in amniotic fluid may provide a substrate of global fetal maturation markers for personalized management of at-risk pregnancies.

The 2020 moment magnitude (Mw) 6.5 Stanley, Idaho, earthquake raised questions about the history and extent of complex faulting in the northwestern Centennial Tectonic Belt (CTB) and its relation to the Sawtooth normal fault and Eocene Trans-Challis fault system (TCFS). To explore faulting in this area, we excavated a paleoseismic trench across the Sawtooth fault along the western margin of the CTB, and compared an early Holocene (9.1 ± 2.1 ka, 1σ) rupture at the site with lacustrine paleoseismic data and fault mapping in the 2020 epicentral region. We find: (1) a history of partial to full rupture of the Sawtooth fault (Mw 6.8–7.4), (2) that shorter ruptures (Mw≤6.9) are likely along distributed and discontinuous faults in the epicentral region, (3) that this complex system that hosted the 2020 earthquake is not directly linked to the Sawtooth fault, (4) that the northeast-trending TCFS likely plays a role in controlling fault length and rupture continuity for adjacent faults, and (5) that parts of the TCFS may facilitate displacement transfer between normal faults that accommodate crustal extension and rotation. Our results help unravel complex faulting in the CTB and imply that relict structures can help inform regional seismic hazard assessments.

Abstract Background Preterm birth is often associated with chorioamnionitis and leads to increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism. Preterm birth can lead to cerebellar underdevelopment, but the mechanisms of disrupted cerebellar development in preterm infants are not well understood. The cerebellum is consistently affected in people with autism spectrum disorders, showing reduction of Purkinje cells, decreased cerebellar grey matter, and altered connectivity. Methods Preterm rhesus macaque fetuses were exposed to intra-amniotic LPS (1 mg, E. coli O55:B5) at 127 days (80%) gestation and delivered by c-section 5 days after injections. Maternal and fetal plasma were sampled for cytokine measurements. Chorio-decidua was analyzed for immune cell populations by flow cytometry. Fetal cerebellum was sampled for histology and molecular analysis by single-nuclei RNA-sequencing (snRNA-seq) on a 10× chromium platform. snRNA-seq data were analyzed for differences in cell populations, cell-type specific gene expression, and inferred cellular communications. Results We leveraged snRNA-seq of the cerebellum in a clinically relevant rhesus macaque model of chorioamnionitis and preterm birth, to show that chorioamnionitis leads to Purkinje cell loss and disrupted maturation of granule cells and oligodendrocytes in the fetal cerebellum at late gestation. Purkinje cell loss is accompanied by decreased sonic hedgehog signaling from Purkinje cells to granule cells, which show an accelerated maturation, and to oligodendrocytes, which show accelerated maturation from pre-oligodendrocytes into myelinating oligodendrocytes. Conclusion These findings suggest a role of chorioamnionitis on disrupted cerebellar maturation associated with preterm birth and on the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders among preterm infants.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) estimates source characteristics of significant damaging earthquakes, aiming to place events within their seismotectonic framework. Contextualizing the 8 September 2023, Mw 6.8 Al Haouz, Morocco, earthquake is challenging, because it occurred in an enigmatic region of active surface faulting, and low seismicity yet produced significant damage and loss of life. Here, we present the rapid earthquake source products produced by the USGS NEIC, describing how the source model was derived using both seismic and geodetic observations. Our analysis indicates that the earthquake was the result of oblique-reverse faulting in the lower crust on either a steeply north-dipping fault or a moderately south-dipping fault. Finite-slip models using seismic and geodetic data reveal a compact source, with slip occurring at depths of 15–35 km. The causative fault is not apparent, because the rupture did not break the surface, and it is not possible to definitively attribute the earthquake to a known structure. The earthquake centroid depth of 25 km is noteworthy, because it shows slip extending beyond common estimates of seismogenic depth. This earthquake highlights that the seismogenic processes associated with mountain building in this wide plate boundary region are poorly understood.
