Abstract

Abstract Climate change, as a critical global concern, has fueled our efforts to address it through different strategies. In response to the critical worldwide issue of climate change, we suggested a Photovoltaic (PV) system at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad, Pakistan (latitude: 33.724530 N, longitude: 73.046869, terrain elevation: 552 m). Islamabad is located in a region blessed with enormous solar resources, boasting a daily horizontal solar irradiance of 1503.45 kWh/m2 and an average daily solar irradiance of 5.89 kWh/m2, with an exceptional solar fraction of 98.99%. The ambient air temperature, averaging 23.21 °C, reaches its maximum in June and its minimum in December. Our research thoroughly evaluates the system’s performance, accounting for various losses and utilizing modern PVsyst software. Over the course of 18 years, our PV system is expected to save 75,478.60 tons of CO2, the equivalent of planting 348,754 teak trees. Furthermore, the cost of energy generation is an affordable 0.0141 US $/kWh, much lower than traditional rates, including the Sherif cost of 0.028$/kWh. Along with the performance research, we conducted a detailed cost analysis, projecting the starting cost and cash flow, and discovered that the plant would be in surplus within 12 years of installation. Our system is positioned to generate 11,270,771 kWh/year with a respectable performance ratio (PR) of 76.2% and a Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF) of 16%. Our findings not only highlight the potential of renewable energy but also provide important insights for future sustainable energy programs.

Abstract

In the realm of renewable energy systems, the effective selection of Photovoltaic Thermal (PVT) collectors is important. This study delves into the intricacies of choosing optimal PVT collectors available in the market, emphasizing the utility of Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodologies. PVT collectors are differentiated based on various aspects such as their transparent front cover presence and the medium—liquid or air—used for heat transfer. The study methodologically identifies commercially available PVT collectors and establishes key performance indicators for comparison. Using an 11-point fuzzy scale, a weight matrix is determined. Subsequently, advanced MCDM techniques, including PROMETHEE II, TOPSIS, EDAS, and VIKOR, are employed to rank the alternatives. This research not only provides a systematic approach to PVT collector selection but also extends to a MATLAB-based tool for facilitating the process. The results underscore the value of the proposed methodologies in refining the selection of PVT collectors and their potential adaptability to other applications, such as PVT collector design.

Abstract

The recent discoveries of Neptune-sized ultra-short period planets (USPs) challenge existing planet formation theories. It is unclear whether these residents of the Hot Neptune Desert have similar origins to smaller, rocky USPs, or if this discrete population is evidence of a different formation pathway altogether. We report the discovery of TOI-3261b, an ultra-hot Neptune with an orbital period $P$ = 0.88 days. The host star is a $V = 13.2$ magnitude, slightly super-solar metallicity ([Fe/H] $\simeq$ 0.15), inactive K1.5 main sequence star at $d = 300$ pc. Using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope, we find that TOI-3261b has a radius of $3.82_{-0.35}^{+0.42}$ $R_{\oplus}$. Moreover, radial velocities from ESPRESSO and HARPS reveal a mass of $30.3_{-2.4}^{+2.2}$ $M_{\oplus}$, more than twice the median mass of Neptune-sized planets on longer orbits. We investigate multiple mechanisms of mass loss that can reproduce the current-day properties of TOI-3261b, simulating the evolution of the planet via tidal stripping and photoevaporation. Thermal evolution models suggest that TOI-3261b should retain an envelope potentially enriched with volatiles constituting $\sim$5% of its total mass. Abstract

Despite the large number of studies focused on the characterisation of Li-rich stars and understanding the mechanisms leading to such enrichment, their origin remains a mystery. Magnetic activity, particularly the phenomena usually associated with it, and the Li abundance (A(Li)) of stars, are in general thought to be connected. As of today, however, just how they are connected is unclear. In this work, we study a sample of young but evolved intermediate-mass red giants that are inhabitants of open clusters where planets have been searched for. Our aim is to use radial velocity (RV) and stellar activity indicator signals to look for relations between Li abundances and stellar activity or variability. We explored how the standard deviation (STD), peak-to-peak amplitude (PTP), mean, and median of typical stellar activity indicators (BIS, FWHM, $T_\textrm{eff}$, and H$\alpha$ index) change as a function of the Li content of 82 red giants. Furthermore, we computed weighted Pearson correlation coefficients ($\rho_w$) between time series of RV measurements and the stellar activity indicators for the stars in our sample. To aid our results, we also studied generalized Lomb-Scargle periodograms (GLSP) to capture possible significant periodic temporal variations in our data. Our analysis indicates that the STD and PTP of BIS and FWHM, the mean and median of the H$\alpha$ index, and $v\sin(i)$ increase exponentially with A(Li) in our sample of red giants. Significant temporal variations and correlations between RVs and activity indicators also tend to be found preferentially for stars where high A(Li) is observed. Most of the Li-rich stars in our sample either show strong correlations of RV with at least one of the stellar activity indicators or reveal significant periodic temporal variations in their GLSPs of stellar activity indicators that are consistent with those found for RV., Comment: Published in A&A

Abstract

The Near-InfraRed Planet Searcher or NIRPS is a precision radial velocity spectrograph developed through collaborative efforts among laboratories in Switzerland, Canada, Brazil, France, Portugal and Spain. NIRPS extends to the 0.98-1.8 $\mu$m domain of the pioneering HARPS instrument at the La Silla 3.6-m telescope in Chile and it has achieved unparalleled precision, measuring stellar radial velocities in the infrared with accuracy better than 1 m/s. NIRPS can be used either stand-alone or simultaneously with HARPS. Commissioned in late 2022 and early 2023, NIRPS embarked on a 5-year Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) program in April 2023, spanning 720 observing nights. This program focuses on planetary systems around M dwarfs, encompassing both the immediate solar vicinity and transit follow-ups, alongside transit and emission spectroscopy observations. We highlight NIRPS's current performances and the insights gained during its deployment at the telescope. Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract

We have detected solar-like oscillations in the mid K-dwarf $\varepsilon$ Indi A, making it the coolest dwarf to have measured oscillations. The star is noteworthy for harboring a pair of brown dwarf companions and a Jupiter-type planet. We observed $\varepsilon$ Indi A during two radial velocity campaigns, using the high-resolution spectrographs HARPS (2011) and UVES (2021). Weighting the time series, we computed the power spectra and established the detection of solar-like oscillations with a power excess located at $5265 \pm 110 \ \mu$Hz -- the highest frequency solar-like oscillations so far measured in any star. The measurement of the center of the power excess allows us to compute a stellar mass of $0.782 \pm 0.023 \ M_\odot$ based on scaling relations and a known radius from interferometry. We also determine the amplitude of the peak power and note that there is a slight difference between the two observing campaigns, indicating a varying activity level. Abstract

Determination of fundamental parameters of stars impacts all fields of astrophysics, from galaxy evolution to constraining the internal structure of exoplanets. This paper presents a detailed spectroscopic analysis of Barnard's star that compares an exceptionally high-quality (an average signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim$1000 in the entire domain), high-resolution NIR spectrum taken with CFHT/SPIRou to PHOENIX-ACES stellar atmosphere models. The observed spectrum shows thousands of lines not identified in the models with a similar large number of lines present in the model but not in the observed data. We also identify several other caveats such as continuum mismatch, unresolved contamination and spectral lines significantly shifted from their expected wavelengths, all of these can be a source of bias for abundance determination. Out of $>10^4$ observed lines in the NIR that could be used for chemical spectroscopy, we identify a short list of a few hundred lines that are reliable. We present a novel method for determining the effective temperature and overall metallicity of slowly-rotating M dwarfs that uses several groups of lines as opposed to bulk spectral fitting methods. With this method, we infer $T_{eff}$ = 3231 $\pm$ 21 K for Barnard's star, consistent with the value of 3238 $\pm$ 11 K inferred from the interferometric method. We also provide abundance measurements of 15 different elements for Barnard's star, including the abundances of four elements (K, O, Y, Th) never reported before for this star. Abstract

To date, thousands of planets have been discovered, but there are regions of the orbital parameter space that are still bare. An example is the short period and intermediate mass/radius space known as the Neptunian desert, where planets should be easy to find but discoveries remain few. This suggests unusual formation and evolution processes are responsible for the planets residing here. We present the discovery of TOI-332 b, a planet with an ultra-short period of $0.78$ d that sits firmly within the desert. It orbits a K0 dwarf with an effective temperature of $5251 \pm 71$ K. TOI-332 b has a radius of $3.20^{+0.16}_{-0.12}$ R$_{\oplus}$, smaller than that of Neptune, but an unusually large mass of $57.2 \pm 1.6$ M$_{\oplus}$. It has one of the highest densities of any Neptune-sized planet discovered thus far at $9.6^{+1.1}_{-1.3}$ gcm$^{-3}$. A 4-layer internal structure model indicates it likely has a negligible hydrogen-helium envelope, something only found for a small handful of planets this massive, and so TOI-332 b presents an interesting challenge to planetary formation theories. We find that photoevaporation cannot account for the mass loss required to strip this planet of the Jupiter-like envelope it would have been expected to accrete. We need to look towards other scenarios, such as high-eccentricity migration, giant impacts, or gap opening in the protoplanetary disc, to try and explain this unusual discovery., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We report the discovery of two warm sub-Neptunes transiting the bright (G = 9.5 mag) K-dwarf HD 15906 (TOI 461, TIC 4646810). This star was observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in sectors 4 and 31, revealing two small transiting planets. The inner planet, HD 15906 b, was detected with an unambiguous period but the outer planet, HD 15906 c, showed only two transits separated by $\sim$ 734 days, leading to 36 possible values of its period. We performed follow-up observations with the CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) to confirm the true period of HD 15906 c and improve the radius precision of the two planets. From TESS, CHEOPS and additional ground-based photometry, we find that HD 15906 b has a radius of 2.24 $\pm$ 0.08 R$_\oplus$ and a period of 10.924709 $\pm$ 0.000032 days, whilst HD 15906 c has a radius of 2.93$^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$ R$_\oplus$ and a period of 21.583298$^{+0.000052}_{-0.000055}$ days. Assuming zero bond albedo and full day-night heat redistribution, the inner and outer planet have equilibrium temperatures of 668 $\pm$ 13 K and 532 $\pm$ 10 K, respectively. The HD 15906 system has become one of only six multiplanet systems with two warm ($\lesssim$ 700 K) sub-Neptune sized planets transiting a bright star (G $\leq$ 10 mag). Abstract

Structures with timber framed masonry represent a special typology that is frequently found in Europe and other countries of the world. They are traditional buildings, non-engineered, which showed an unexpected redundancy during earthquakes where reinforced concrete buildings (improperly constructed) collapsed. In the paper, aspects regarding the interaction between timber elements and masonry are mainly addressed, that were observed both in experimental studies, but also in the in situ seismic behavior of this type of structure during important earthquakes.

Abstract

Exploring the properties of exoplanets near or inside the radius valley provides insights on the transition from the rocky super-Earths to the larger, hydrogen-rich atmosphere mini-Neptunes. Here, we report the discovery of TOI-1452 b, a transiting super-Earth ($R_{\rm p} = 1.67 \pm 0.07$ R$_{\oplus}$) in an 11.1--day temperate orbit ($T_{\rm eq} = 326 \pm 7$ K) around the primary member ($H = 10.0$, $T_{\rm eff} = 3185 \pm 50$ K) of a nearby visual binary M dwarf. The transits were first detected by TESS, then successfully isolated between the two $3.2^{\prime\prime}$ companions with ground-based photometry from OMM and MuSCAT3. The planetary nature of TOI-1452 b was established through high-precision velocimetry with the near-infrared SPIRou spectropolarimeter as part of the ongoing SPIRou Legacy Survey. The measured planetary mass ($4.8 \pm 1.3$ M$_{\oplus}$) and inferred bulk density ($5.6^{+1.8}_{-1.6}$ g/cm$^3$) is suggestive of a rocky core surrounded by a volatile-rich envelope. More quantitatively, the mass and radius of TOI-1452 b, combined with the stellar abundance of refractory elements (Fe, Mg and Si) measured by SPIRou, is consistent with a core mass fraction of $18\pm6$ % and a water mass fraction of $22^{+21}_{-13}$%. The water world candidate TOI-1452 b is a prime target for future atmospheric characterization with JWST, featuring a Transmission Spectroscopy Metric similar to other well-known temperate small planets such as LHS 1140 b and K2-18 b. Abstract

We present the first exoplanet atmosphere detection made as part of the SPIRou Legacy Survey, a Large Observing Program of 300 nights exploiting the capabilities of SPIRou, the new near-infrared high-resolution (R ~ 70 000) spectro-polarimeter installed on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT; 3.6-m). We observed two transits of HD 189733, an extensively studied hot Jupiter that is known to show prominent water vapor absorption in its transmission spectrum. When combining the two transits, we successfully detect the planet's water vapor absorption at 5.9 sigma using a cross-correlation t-test, or with a Delta BIC >10 using a log-likelihood calculation. Using a Bayesian retrieval framework assuming a parametrized T-P profile atmosphere models, we constrain the planet atmosphere parameters, in the region probed by our transmission spectrum, to the following values: VMR[H2O] = -4.4^{+0.4}_{-0.4}, and P_cloud >~ 0.2 bar (grey clouds), both of which are consistent with previous studies of this planet. Our retrieved water volume mixing ratio is slightly sub-solar although, combining it with the previously retrieved super-solar CO abundances from other studies would imply super-solar C/O ratio. We furthermore measure a net blue shift of the planet signal of -4.62^{+0.46}_{-0.44} km s-1, which is somewhat larger than many previous measurements and unlikely to result solely from winds in the planet's atmosphere, although it could possibly be explained by a transit signal dominated by the trailing limb of the planet. Abstract

We present the discovery of an $18.5\pm0.5$M$_{\rm Jup}$ brown dwarf (BD) companion to the M0V star TOI-1278. The system was first identified through a percent-deep transit in TESS photometry; further analysis showed it to be a grazing transit of a Jupiter-sized object. Radial velocity (RV) follow-up with the SPIRou near-infrared high-resolution velocimeter and spectropolarimeter in the framework of the 300-night SPIRou Legacy Survey (SLS) carried out at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) led to the detection of a Keplerian RV signal with a semi-amplitude of $2306\pm10$ m/s in phase with the 14.5-day transit period, having a slight but non-zero eccentricity. The intermediate-mass ratio ($M_\star/M_{\rm{comp}} \sim31$) is unique for having such a short separation ($0.095\pm0.001$ AU) among known M-dwarf systems. Abstract

Objetivo: Verificar o efeito de aulas de hidroginástica na autonomia funcional de idosas. Métodos: O estudo foi realizado com 38 idosas selecionadas aleatoriamente, com idades entre 60 e 75 anos, divididas em dois grupos: GIS (idosas sedentárias), N = 19, e GIH (idosas praticantes de hidroginástica), N = 19. O GIH realizou aulas de hidroginástica, três vezes por semana, com duração de 50 minutos, durante seis meses. O GIS não praticou nenhuma atividade durante os seis meses. A aptidão física das idosas foi mensurada por meio da bateria de testes desenvolvida pelo Grupo de Desenvolvimento Latino-Americano para a Maturidade (GDLAM) de avaliação da autonomia funcional, utilizando no protocolo cinco testes, aferidos por tempo em segundos, que se relacionam com os principais movimentos da vida diária das idosas: "caminhar 10 metros (C10m)", "levantar-se da posição sentada (LPS)", "levantar-se da posição decúbito ventral (LPDV)", "levantar-se da cadeira e locomover-se pela casa (LCLC)" e "vestir e tirar uma camiseta (VTC)". Resultados: O GIS apresentou menor autonomia funcional comparado com o GIH, e essa diferença foi comprovada estatisticamente: p < 0,05. Conclusão: Conclui-se que programas de hidroginástica colaboram para a melhoria e a manutenção da autonomia funcional de idosas, influenciando suas vidas de forma positiva, contribuindo para maior independência e assegurando a eles melhor qualidade de vida.

Abstract

In the present study, a zero-dimensional thermal model has been developed to analyze a novel low concentration photovoltaic-thermal (CPVT) collector. The model has been developed by driving heat transfer and energy balance equations for each part of the collector and then solving all the equations simultaneously. Moreover, a Monte-Carlo ray-tracing software has been used for optical stimulations of the parabolic trough solar collector. The novel CPVT collector has been experimentally tested at Gavle University (Sweden) and the model has been validated against the experimental results. The primary energy saving equivalent to the thermal-electrical power cogeneration of the CPVT collector has been determined. The effect of glass cover removal, heat transfer fluid (HTF) inlet temperature and mass flow rate on the collector performance has been investigated. The optimum HTF mass flow rates of the collector for maximum electrical yield and overall primary energy saving were determined under specified operating conditions by considering the pump consumption. The effect of mean fluid temperature on the thermal and electrical efficiencies has been studied and the characteristic equation of the thermal efficiency has been obtained. The thermal and electrical peak efficiencies of the collector have been found to be 69.6% and 6.1%, respectively.

O aumento da população acarreta a expansão social e econômica de uma região, mas também ocasiona consequências prejudiciais ao meio ambiente, dentre eles o aumento da geração de resíduos sólidos. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar uma possível contaminação do solo do antigo lixão do município de Viçosa – Alagoas por metais pesados devido à disposição inadequada de resíduos sólidos urbanos por meio de análises laboratoriais físico-químicas e de metais pesados. A pesquisa foi realizada na antiga área do lixão pertencente ao município de Viçosa, localizado na Zona da Mata do Estado de Alagoas, sendo coletadas 10 amostras de solo para análises físicas e químicas do solo e 05 amostras para determinação dos metais pesados, como também a coleta de amostras de água para análises físico-químicas da água. Foram encontrados os seguintes metais pesados na área do antigo lixão: cádmio (Cd), crômio (Cr), cobre (Cu), ferro (Fe), manganês (Mn) e zinco (Zn). O ferro (Fe), crômio (Cr) e manganês (Mn), configurando variáveis que mais contribuíram para a formação de grupos distintos ou para determinação da variabilidade entre as áreas estudadas. O cádmio (Cd) foi o único metal pesado que teores acima dos níveis permitidos pela resolução 420/2009 do CONAMA. No córrego próximo à área do lixão foram encontrados valores de metais Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, Cu e Cr com níveis de tolerância aceitáveis para utilização da água de acordo com a Resolução do CONAMA 20/86 com exceção do elemento Mn, que apresentou valores acima do limite estabelecido pela Resolução do CONAMA 20/86 e também os limites preconizados pelo Ministério da Saúde para potabilidade da água.

Abstract

One in every eight women will get breast cancer during their lifetime. Therefore, the early diagnosis of the lesions is fundamental to improve the chances of recovery. To find breast cancers, breast screening using techniques such as mammography and ultrasound (US) imaging scans are often used. When a lesion is found, a breast biopsy is performed to extract a tissue sample for analysis. The breast biopsy is usually assisted by an US to help find the lesion and guide the needle to its location. However, the identification of the needle tip in US image is challenging, possibly resulting in puncture failures. In this paper, we intend to study the potential of a sensorized needle guide system that provides information about the needle angle and displacement in respect to the US probe. Laboratory tests were initially conducted to evaluate the accuracy of each sensor in controlled conditions. After, a practical experiment with the US probe, working as a proof of concept, was performed. The angle sensor showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.48 degrees and the displacement sensor showed a RMSE of 0.26mm after being calibrated. For the US probe tests, the displacement sensor shows high errors in the range of 1.19mm to 2.05mm due to mechanical reasons. Overall, the proposed system showed its potential to be used to accurately estimate needle tip localization throughout breast biopsies guided by US, corroborating its potential clinical application. Clinical relevance - Potential for clinical application where precise needle localization in ultrasound image is required.
