Search

Planet formation and clearing of protoplanetary disks is one of the long standing problems in disk evolution theory. The best test of clearing scenarios is observing systems that are most likely to be actively forming planets: the transitional disks with large inner dust cavities. We present the first results of our ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) Cycle 0 program using Band 9, imaging the Herbig Ae star Oph IRS 48 in CO 6−5 and the submillimeter continuum in the extended configuration. The resulting ~0.2″ spatial resolution completely resolves the cavity of this disk in the gas and the dust. The gas cavity of IRS 48 is half as large as the dust cavity, ruling out grain growth and photoevaporation as the primary cause of the truncation. On the other hand, the continuum emission reveals an unexpected large azimuthal asymmetry and steep edges in the dust distribution along the ring, suggestive of dust trapping. We will discuss the implications of the combined gas and dust distribution for planet formation at a very early stage. This is one of the first transition disks with spatially resolved gas inside the cavity, demonstrating the superb capabilities of the Band 9 receivers.

With the goal to study the physical and chemical evolution of ices in solar-mass systems, a spectral survey is conducted of a sample of 41 low luminosity YSOs using 3-38 um Spitzer and ground-based spectra. The long-known 6.0 and 6.85 um bands are detected toward all sources, with the Class 0-type YSOs showing the deepest bands ever observed. In almost all sources the 6.0 um band is deeper than expected from the bending mode of pure solid H2O. The depth and shape variations of the remaining 5-7 um absorption indicate that it consists of 5 independent components, which, by comparison to laboratory studies, must be from at least 8 different carriers. Simple species are responsible for much of the absorption in the 5-7 um region, at abundances of 1-30% for CH3OH, 3-8% for NH3, 1-5% for HCOOH, ~6% for H2CO, and ~0.3% for HCOO- with respect to solid H2O. The 6.85 um band likely consists of one or two carriers, of which one is less volatile than H2O because its abundance relative to H2O is enhanced at lower H2O/tau_9.7 ratios. It does not survive in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM), however. The similarity of the 6.85 um bands for YSOs and background stars indicates that its carrier(s) must be formed early in the molecular cloud evolution. If an NH4+ salt is the carrier its abundance with respect to solid H2O is typically 7%, and low temperature acid-base chemistry or cosmic ray induced reactions must have been involved in its formation. Possible origins are discussed for the carrier of an enigmatic, very broad absorption between 5 and 8 um. Finally, all the phenomena observed for ices toward massive YSOs are also observed toward low mass YSOs, indicating that processing of the ices by internal ultraviolet radiation fields is a minor factor in the early chemical evolution of the ices. Mid-infrared spectrophotometric observations have revealed a small subclass of circumstellar disks with spectral energy distributions (SEDs) suggestive of large inner gaps with low dust content. However, such data provide only an indirect and model-dependent method of finding central holes. We present here the direct characterization of a 40 AU radius inner gap in the disk around LkHα 330 through 340 GHz (880 μm) dust continuum imaging with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). This large gap is fully resolved by the SMA observations and mostly empty of dust with less than 1.3 × 10^−6 M☉ of solid particles inside of 40 AU. Gas (as traced by accretion markers and CO M-band emission) is still present in the inner disk and the outer edge of the gap rises steeply—features in better agreement with the underlying cause being gravitational perturbation than a more gradual process such as grain growth. Importantly, the good agreement of the spatially resolved data and spectrophotometry-based model lends confidence to current interpretations of SEDs with significant dust emission deficits as arising from disks with inner gaps or holes. Further SED-based searches can therefore be expected to yield numerous additional candidates that can be examined at high spatial resolution.

We report the detection of CO rovibrational emission from the transitional disks around the T Tauri stars TW Hya and GM Aur. Transitional disks are characterized by significant mid- to far-infrared (IR) dust emission combined with a relative deficit in the near-IR, indicating the presence of an optically thick outer disk but a reduced surface density of small dust grains in the inner disk. Kinematic fits to the resolved CO emission lines demonstrate that they arise from within the tenuous inner disk. Excitation diagram analyses yield rotational temperatures also consistent with small emission radii as well as densities implying dynamically significant amounts of gas in the inner disk and a gas-to-small dust grain ratio in excess of that in dense clouds. Nevertheless, gas densities are not high enough to maintain current accretion rates for more than a few hundred years without replenishment, and transfer of gas from the outer to inner disk is therefore likely required.

The flaring behavior of active RS CVn binaries has been studied extensively at centimeter wavelengths, but very little has been published concerning RS CVn flares in the millimeter region, where the nonthermal gyrosynchrotron emission is much more likely to be optically thin. We present 3 mm (99 GHz) observations of a large flare on the active binary σ Gem using the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. Two 3 hr observations in 2004 February showed only 3 σ upper limits of 3 mJy, while the third observation on 2004 April 22 showed a large flare outburst that filled the 6 hr observation and reached a peak flux density of 90 mJy. The strongest brightening was preceded by at least a 4 hr period of significantly elevated emission at 20-40 mJy. These observations demonstrate the feasibility of detailed multifrequency studies of nonthermal electron distributions in active star coronae with the next generation of millimeter and centimeter radio arrays.

Sensitive 5-38 um Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and ground based 3-5 um spectra of the embedded low mass protostars B5 IRS1 and HH46 IRS show deep ice absorption bands superposed on steeply rising mid-infrared continua. The ices likely originate in the circumstellar envelopes. The CO2 bending mode at 15 um is a particularly powerful tracer of the ice composition and processing history. Toward these protostars, this band shows little evidence for thermal processing at temperatures above 50 K. Signatures of lower temperature processing are present in the CO and OCN- bands, however. The observed CO2 profile indicates an intimate mixture with H2O, but not necessarily with CH3OH, in contrast to some high mass protostars. This is consistent with the low CH3OH abundance derived from the ground based L band spectra. The CO2/H2O column density ratios are high in both B5 IRS1 and HH46 IRS (~35%). The formation scenario of a gapped disk, i.e., transitional disk, and its asymmetry is still under debate. Proposed scenarios such as disk-planet interaction, photoevaporation, grain growth, anticyclonic vortex, eccentricity, and their combinations would result in different radial distributions of the gas and the small (sub-$\mu$m size) and large (millimeter size) dust grains as well as asymmetric structures in a disk. Optical/near-infrared (NIR) imaging observations and (sub-)millimeter interferometry can trace small and large dust grains, respectively; therefore multi-wavelength observations could help elucidate the origin of complicated structures of a disk. Here we report SMA observations of the dust continuum at 1.3~mm and $^{12}$CO~$J=2\rightarrow1$ line emission of the pre-transitional protoplanetary disk around the solar-mass star PDS~70. PDS~70, a weak-lined T Tauri star, exhibits a gap in the scattered light from its disk with a radius of $\sim$65~AU at NIR wavelengths. However, we found a larger gap in the disk with a radius of $\sim$80~AU at 1.3~mm. Emission from all three disk components (the gas and the small and large dust grains) in images exhibits a deficit in brightness in the central region of the disk, in particular, the dust-disk in small and large dust grains has asymmetric brightness. The contrast ratio of the flux density in the dust continuum between the peak position to the opposite side of the disk reaches 1.4. We suggest the asymmetries and different gap-radii of the disk around PDS~70 are potentially formed by several (unseen) accreting planets inducing dust filtration., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We report ALMA Cycle 2 observations of 230 GHz (1.3 mm) dust continuum emission, and $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O J = 2-1 line emission, from the Upper Scorpius transitional disk [PZ99] J160421.7-213028, with an angular resolution of ~0".25 (35 AU). Armed with these data and existing H-band scattered light observations, we measure the size and depth of the disk's central cavity, and the sharpness of its outer edge, in three components: sub-$\mu$m-sized "small" dust traced by scattered light, millimeter-sized "big" dust traced by the millimeter continuum, and gas traced by line emission. Both dust populations feature a cavity of radius $\sim$70 AU that is depleted by factors of at least 1000 relative to the dust density just outside. The millimeter continuum data are well explained by a cavity with a sharp edge. Scattered light observations can be fitted with a cavity in small dust that has either a sharp edge at 60 AU, or an edge that transitions smoothly over an annular width of 10 AU near 60 AU. In gas, the data are consistent with a cavity that is smaller, about 15 AU in radius, and whose surface density at 15 AU is $10^{3\pm1}$ times smaller than the surface density at 70 AU; the gas density grades smoothly between these two radii. The CO isotopologue observations rule out a sharp drop in gas surface density at 30 AU or a double-drop model as found by previous modeling. We conducted Herschel/PACS observations of five very low-mass stars or brown dwarfs located in the TW Hya association with the goal of characterizing the properties of disks in the low stellar mass regime. We detected all five targets at $70\,\mu{\rm{m}}$ and $100\,\mu{\rm{m}}$ and three targets at $160\,\mu{\rm{m}}$. Our observations, combined with previous photometry from 2MASS, WISE, and SCUBA-2, enabled us to construct SEDs with extended wavelength coverage. Using sophisticated radiative transfer models, we analyzed the observed SEDs of the five detected objects with a hybrid fitting strategy that combines the model grids and the simulated annealing algorithm and evaluated the constraints on the disk properties via the Bayesian inference method. The modelling suggests that disks around low-mass stars and brown dwarfs are generally flatter than their higher mass counterparts, but the range of disk mass extends to well below the value found in T Tauri stars, and the disk scale heights are comparable in both groups. The inferred disk properties (i.e., disk mass, flaring, and scale height) in the low stellar mass regime are consistent with previous findings from large samples of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars. We discuss the dependence of disk properties on their host stellar parameters and find a significant correlation between the Herschel far-IR fluxes and the stellar effective temperatures, probably indicating that the scaling between the stellar and disk masses (i.e., $M_{\rm{disk}} \propto M_{\star}$) observed mainly in low-mass stars may extend down to the brown dwarf regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The study of young stars no longer surrounded by disks can greatly add to our understanding of how protoplanetary disks evolve and planets form. We have used VLT/FLAMES optical spectroscopy to confirm the youth and membership of 19 new young diskless stars in the Serpens Molecular Cloud, identified at X-ray wavelengths. Spectral types, effective temperatures and stellar luminosities were determined using the optical spectra and optical/near-IR photometry. Stellar masses and ages were derived based on PMS evolutionary tracks. The results yield remarkable similarities for age and mass distribution between the diskless and disk-bearing stellar populations in Serpens. In this work, we introduce the use of H I Pfund {$β$} (Pf{$β$} 4.6538 {$μ$}m) as a tracer of mass accretion from protoplanetary disks onto young stars. Pf{$β$} was serendipitously observed in NIRSPEC and CRIRES surveys of CO fundamental emission, amounting to a sample size of 120 young stars with detected Pf{$β$} emission. Using a subsample of disks with previously measured accretion luminosities, we show that Pf{$β$} line luminosity is well correlated with accretion luminosity over a range of at least three orders of magnitude. We use this correlation to derive accretion luminosities for all 120 targets, 65 of which are previously unreported in the literature. The conversion from accretion luminosity to accretion rate is limited by the availability of stellar mass and radius measurements; nevertheless, we also report accretion rates for 67 targets, 16 previously unmeasured. Our large sample size and our ability to probe high extinction values allow for relatively unbiased comparisons between different types of disks. We find that the transitional disks in our sample have lower than average Pf{$β$} line luminosities, and thus accretion luminosities, at a marginally significant level. We also show that high Pf{$β$} equivalent width is a signature of transitional disks with high inner disk gas/dust ratios. In contrast, we find that disks with signatures of slow disk winds have Pf{$β$} luminosities comparable to those of other disks in our sample. Finally, we investigate accretion rates for stage I disks, including significantly embedded targets. We find that stage I and stage II disks have statistically indistinguishable Pf{$β$} line luminosities, implying similar accretion rates, and that the accretion rates of stage I disks are too low to be consistent with quiescent accretion. Our results are instead consistent with both observational and theoretical evidence that stage I objects experience episodic, rather than quiescent, accretion.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the most commonly used tracer of molecular gas in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks. CO can be used to constrain the excitation and structure of the circumstellar environment. Absorption line spectroscopy provides an accurate assessment of a single line-of-sight through the protoplanetary disk system, giving more straightforward estimates of column densities and temperatures than CO and molecular hydrogen emission line studies. We analyze new observations of ultraviolet CO absorption from the Hubble Space Telescope along the sightlines to six classical T Tauri stars. Gas velocities consistent with the stellar velocities, combined with the moderate-to-high disk inclinations, argue against the absorbing CO gas originating in a fast-moving disk wind. We conclude that the far-ultraviolet observations provide a direct measure of the disk atmosphere or possibly a slow disk wind. The CO absorption lines are reproduced by model spectra with column densities in the range N(^{12}CO) ~ 10^{16} - 10^{18} cm^{-2} and N(^{13}CO) ~ 10^{15} - 10^{17} cm^{-2}, rotational temperatures T_{rot}(CO) ~ 300 - 700 K, and Doppler b-values, b ~ 0.5 - 1.5 km s^{-1}. We use these results to constrain the line-of-sight density of the warm molecular gas (n_{CO} ~ 70 - 4000 cm^{-3}) and put these observations in context with protoplanetary disk models., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, ApJ - accepted

Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) on Mauna Kea, the H2-16O 10_2,9-9_3,6 transition (E_up=1863K) at 321.2 GHz has been detected toward the embedded low-mass protostar HL Tau. The line centroid is blue-shifted by 15 km/s with respect to the source velocity, and it has a FWHM of 20 km/s. The emission is tentatively resolved and extends ~3-4" over the sky (~2 beams), or ~500 AU at the distance of Taurus. The velocity offset, and to a lesser degree the spatial extent of the emission, shows that the line originates in the protostellar jet or wind. This result suggests that at least some water emission observed toward embedded sources, and perhaps also disk sources, with Herschel and Spitzer contains a wind or jet component, which is crucial for interpreting these data. These pathfinder observations done with the SMA opens a new window to studying the origin of water emission with e.g. ALMA, thus providing new insights into where water is in protostellar systems., Accepted for publication in ApJL

We report radio interferometric observations of the 12C16O 1.3 mm J = 2-1 emission line in the circumstellar envelope of the M supergiant Alpha Ori and have detected and separated both the S1 and S2 flow components for the first time. Observations were made with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) interferometer in the C, D, and E antenna configurations. We obtain good u-v coverage (5-280 klambda) by combining data from all three configurations allowing us to trace spatial scales as small as 0.9\arcsec over a 32\arcsec field of view. The high spectral and spatial resolution C configuration line profile shows that the inner S1 flow has slightly asymmetric outflow velocities ranging from -9.0 km s-1 to +10.6 km s-1 with respect to the stellar rest frame. We find little evidence for the outer S2 flow in this configuration because the majority of this emission has been spatially-filtered (resolved out) by the array. We also report a SOFIA-GREAT CO(J= 12-11) emission line profile which we associate with this inner higher excitation S1 flow. The outer S2 flow appears in the D and E configuration maps and its outflow velocity is found to be in good agreement with high resolution optical spectroscopy of K I obtained at the McDonald Observatory. We image both S1 and S2 in the multi-configuration maps and see a gradual change in the angular size of the emission in the high absolute velocity maps. We assign an outer radius of 4\arcsec to S1 and propose that S2 extends beyond CARMA's field of view (32\arcsec at 1.3 mm) out to a radius of 17\arcsec which is larger than recent single-dish observations have indicated. When azimuthally averaged, the intensity fall-off for both flows is found to be proportional to R^{-1}, where R is the projected radius, indicating optically thin winds with \rho \propto R^{-2}., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures To be published in the Astronomical Journal (Received 2012 February 10; accepted 2012 May 25)

The formation timescale and final architecture of exoplanetary systems are closely related to the properties of the molecular disks from which they form. Observations of the spatial distribution and lifetime of the molecular gas at planet-forming radii (r < 10 AU) are important for understanding the formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems. Towards this end, we present the largest spectrally resolved survey of H2 emission around low-mass pre-main sequence stars compiled to date. We use a combination of new and archival far-ultraviolet spectra from the COS and STIS instruments on the Hubble Space Telescope to sample 34 T Tauri stars (27 actively accreting CTTSs and 7 non-accreting WTTSs) with ages ranging from roughly 1-10 Myr. We observe fluorescent H2 emission, excited by LyA photons, in 100 of the accreting sources, including all of the transitional disks in our sample (CS Cha, DM Tau, GM Aur, UX Tau A, LkCa15, HD 135344B and TW Hya). The spatial distribution of the emitting gas is inferred from spectrally resolved H2 line profiles. Some of the emitting gas is produced in outflowing material, but the majority of H2 emission appears to originate in a rotating disk. For the disk-dominated targets, the H2 emission originates predominately at r < 3 AU. The emission line-widths and inner molecular radii are found to be roughly consistent with those measured from mid-IR CO spectra., ApJ - accepted. 19 pages, 12 figures

The direct study of molecular gas in inner protoplanetary disks is complicated by uncertainties in the spatial distribution of the gas, the time-variability of the source, and the comparison of observations across a wide range of wavelengths. Some of these challenges can be mitigated with far-ultraviolet spectroscopy. Using new observations obtained with the HST-Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, we measure column densities and rovibrational temperatures for CO and H2 observed on the line-of-sight through the AA Tauri circumstellar disk. CO A-X absorption bands are observed against the far-UV continuum. The CO absorption is characterized by log(N(^{12}CO)) = 17.5 +/- 0.5 cm^{-2} and T_rot(CO) = 500$^{+500}_{-200} K, although this rotational temperature may underestimate the local kinetic temperature of the CO-bearing gas. We also detect ^{13}CO in absorption with an isotopic ratio of ~20. We do not observe H2 absorption against the continuum; however, hot H2 (v > 0) is detected in absorption against the LyA emission line. We measure the column densities in eight individual rovibrational states, determining a total log(N(H2)) = 17.9^{+0.6}_{-0.3} cm^{-2} with a thermal temperature of T(H2) = 2500^{+800}_{-700} K. The high-temperature of the molecules, the relatively small H2 column density, and the high-inclination of the AA Tauri disk suggest that the absorbing gas resides in an inner disk atmosphere. If the H2 and CO are co-spatial within a molecular layer ~ 0.6 AU thick, this region is characterized by ~ 10^{5} cm^{-3} with an observed ratio of ~ 0.4. We also find evidence for a departure from a purely thermal H2 distribution, suggesting that excitation by continuum photons and H2 formation may be altering the level populations in the molecular gas., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. The Astrophysical Journal 728.1 (2011):5 reproduced by permission of the AAS, We report monitoring observations of the T Tauri star EX Lupi during its outburst in 2008 in the CO fundamental band at 4.6-5.0 μm. The observations were carried out at the Very Large Telescope and the Subaru Telescope at six epochs from 2008 April to August, covering the plateau of the outburst and the fading phase to a quiescent state. The line flux of CO emission declines with the visual brightness of the star and the continuum flux at 5 μm, but composed of two subcomponents that decay with different rates. The narrow-line emission (50 km s-1 in FWHM) is near the systemic velocity of EX Lupi. These emission lines appear exclusively in υ = 1-0. The line widths translate to a characteristic orbiting radius of 0.4 AU. The broad-line component (FWZI ∼ 150 km s-1) is highly excited up to υ ≤ 6. The line flux of the component decreases faster than the narrow-line emission. Simple modeling of the line profiles implies that the broad-line emitting gas is orbiting around the star at 0.04-0.4 AU. The excitation state, the decay speed of the line flux, and the line profile indicate that the broad-line emission component is physically distinct from the narrow-line emission component, and more tightly related to the outburst event., Zs.R. was partly supported by MO¨ B/DAAD-841 Mobility Grant. Understanding how disks dissipate is essential to studies of planet formation. However, identifying exactly how dust and gas dissipates is complicated due to difficulty in finding objects clearly in the transition of losing their surrounding material. We use Spitzer IRS spectra to examine 35 photometrically-selected candidate cold disks (disks with large inner dust holes). The infrared spectra are supplemented with optical spectra to determine stellar and accretion properties and 1.3mm photometry to measure disk masses. Based on detailed SED modeling, we identify 15 new cold disks. The remaining 20 objects have IRS spectra that are consistent with disks without holes, disks that are observed close to edge-on, or stars with background emission. Based on these results, we determine reliable criteria for identifying disks with inner holes from Spitzer photometry and examine criteria already in the literature. Applying these criteria to the c2d surveyed star-forming regions gives a frequency of such objects of at least 4% and most likely of order 12% of the YSO population identified by Spitzer. We also examine the properties of these new cold disks in combination with cold disks from the literature. Hole sizes in this sample are generally smaller than for previously discovered disks and reflect a distribution in better agreement with exoplanet orbit radii. We find correlations between hole size and both disk and stellar masses. Silicate features, including crystalline features, are present in the overwhelming majority of the sample although 10 micron feature strength above the continuum declines for holes with radii larger than ~7 AU. In contrast, PAHs are only detected in 2 out of 15 sources. Only a quarter of the cold disk sample shows no signs of accretion, making it unlikely that photoevaporation is the dominant hole forming process in most cases., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures and 8 tables. We present Spitzer IRS mid-infrared (5-35 micron) spectra of a complete flux-limited sample (> 3 mJy at 8 micron) of young stellar object (YSO) candidates selected on the basis of their infrared colors in the Serpens Molecular Cloud. Spectra of 147 sources are presented and classified. Background stars (with slope consistent with a reddened stellar spectrum and silicate features in absorption), galaxies (with redshifted PAH features) and a planetary nebula (with high ionization lines) amount to 22% of contamination in this sample, leaving 115 true YSOs. Sources with rising spectra and ice absorption features, classified as embedded Stage I protostars, amount to 18% of the sample. The remaining 82% (94) of the disk sources are analyzed in terms of spectral energy distribution shapes, PAHs and silicate features. The presence, strength and shape of these silicate features are used to infer disk properties for these systems. About 8% of the disks have 30/13 micron flux ratios consistent with cold disks with inner holes or gaps, and 3% of the disks show PAH emission. Comparison with models indicates that dust grains in the surface of these disks have sizes of at least a few ��\m. The 20 micron silicate feature is sometimes seen in absence of the 10 micron feature, which may be indicative of very small holes in these disks. No significant difference is found in the distribution of silicate feature shapes and strengths between sources in clusters and in the field. Moreover, the results in Serpens are compared with other well-studied samples: the c2d IRS sample distributed over 5 clouds and a large sample of disks in the Taurus star-forming region. The remarkably similar distributions of silicate feature characteristics in samples with different environment and median ages - if significant - imply that the dust population in the disk surface results from an equilibrium between dust growth and destructive collision processes that are maintained over a few million years for any YSO population irrespective of environment., accepted by ApJ

We have detected [Fe II] 17.94 um and 24.52 um emission from a sample of M supergiants using TEXES on the IRTF. These low opacity emission lines are resolved at R = 50, 000 and provide new diagnostics of the dynamics and thermodynamics of the stellar wind acceleration zone. The [Fe II] lines, from the first excited term, are sensitive to the warm plasma where energy is deposited into the extended atmosphere to form the chromosphere and wind outflow. These diagnostics complement previous KAO and ISO observations which were sensitive to the cooler and more extended circumstellar envelopes. The turbulent velocities, Vturb is about 12 to 13 km/s, observed in the [Fe II] forbidden lines are found to be a common property of our sample, and are less than that derived from the hotter chromospheric C II] 2325 Angstrom lines observed in alpha Ori, where Vturb is about 17 to 19 km/s. For the first time, we have dynamically resolved the motions of the dominant cool atmospheric component discovered in alpha Ori from multi-wavelength radio interferometry by Lim et al. (1998). Surprisingly, the emission centroids are quite Gaussian and at rest with respect to the M supergiants. These constraints combined with model calculations of the infrared emission line fluxes for alpha Ori imply that the warm material has a low outflow velocity and is located close to the star. We have also detected narrow [Fe I] 24.04 um emission that confirms that Fe II is the dominant ionization state in alpha Ori's extended atmosphere., 79 pages including 10 figures and 2 appendices. International audience; Aims: Dust grains in the planet-forming regions around young stars are expected to be heavily processed due to coagulation, fragmentation, and crystallization. This paper focuses on the crystalline silicate dust grains in protoplanetary disks for a statistically significant number of TTauri stars (96). Methods: As part of the cores to disks (c2d) legacy program, we obtained more than a hundred Spitzer/IRS spectra of TTauri stars, over a spectral range of 5-35 μm where many silicate amorphous and crystalline solid-state features are present. At these wavelengths, observations probe the upper layers of accretion disks up to distances of a dozen AU from the central object. Results: More than 3/4 of our objects show at least one crystalline silicate emission feature that can be essentially attributed to Mg-rich silicates. The Fe-rich crystalline silicates are largely absent in the c2d IRS spectra. The strength and detection frequency of the crystalline features seen at λ > 20 μm correlate with each other, while they are largely uncorrelated with the observational properties of the amorphous silicate 10 μm feature. This supports the idea that the IRS spectra essentially probe two independent disk regions: a warm zone (≤1 AU) emitting at λ ~ 10 μm and a much colder region emitting at λ > 20 μm (≤10 AU). We identify a crystallinity paradox, as the long-wavelength (λ > 20 μm) crystalline silicate features are detected 3.5 times more frequently (~55% vs. ~15%) than the crystalline features arising from much warmer disk regions (λ ~10 μm). This suggests that the disk has an inhomogeneous dust composition within ~10 AU. The analysis of the shape and strength of both the amorphous 10 μm feature and the crystalline feature around 23 μm provides evidence for the prevalence of μm-sized (amorphous and crystalline) grains in upper layers of disks. Conclusions: The abundant crystalline silicates found far from their presumed formation regions suggest efficient outward radial transport mechanisms in the disks around TTauri stars. The presence of μm-sized grains in disk atmospheres, despite the short timescales for settling to the midplane, suggests efficient (turbulent) vertical diffusion, probably accompanied by grain-grain fragmentation to balance the expected efficient growth. In this scenario, the depletion of submicron-sized grains in the upper layers of the disks points toward removal mechanisms such as stellar winds or radiation pressure. We present velocity-resolved spectro-astrometric imaging of the 4.7 $��$m rovibrational lines of CO gas in protoplanetary disks using the CRIRES high resolution infrared spectrometer on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The method as applied to three disks with known dust gaps or inner holes out to 4-45 AU (SR 21, HD 135344B and TW Hya) achieves an unprecedented spatial resolution of $0.1-0.5$ AU. While one possible gap formation mechanism is dynamical clearing by giant planets, other equally good explanations (stellar companions, grain growth, photo-evaporation) exist. One way of distinguishing between different scenarios is the presence and distribution of gas inside the dust gaps. Keplerian disk models are fit to the spectro-astrometric position-velocity curves to derive geometrical parameters of the molecular gas. We determine the position angles and inclinations of the inner disks with accuracies as good as 1-2\degr, as well as the radial extent of the gas emission. Molecular gas is detected well inside the dust gaps in all three disks. The gas emission extends to within a radius of 0.5 AU for HD 135344B and to 0.1 AU for TW Hya, supporting partial clearing by a $< 1-10 M_{\rm Jup}$ planetary body as the cause of the observed dust gaps, or removal of the dust by extensive grain coagulation and planetesimal formation. The molecular gas emission in SR 21 appears to be truncated within $\sim 7 $AU, which may be caused by complete dynamical clearing by a more massive companion. We find a smaller inclination angle of the inner disk of TW Hya than that determined for the outer disk, suggestive of a disk warp. We announce the discovery of SST-Lup3-1, a very low mass star close to the brown dwarf boundary in Lupus III with a circum(sub)stellar disk, discovered by the `Cores to Disks' Spitzer Legacy Program from mid-, near-infrared and optical data, with very conspicuous crystalline silicate features in its spectrum. It is the first of such objects with a full 5 to 35 micron spectrum taken with the IRS and it shows strong 10 and 20 micron silicate features with high feature to continuum ratios and clear crystalline features out to 33 micron. The dust in the disk upper layer has a crystalline silicate grain fraction between 15% and 33%, depending on the assumed dust continuum. The availability of the full Spitzer infrared spectrum allows an analysis of the dust composition as a function of temperature and position in the disk. The hot (~ 300 K) dust responsible for the 10 micron feature consists of a roughly equal mix of small (~ 0.1 micron) and large (~ 1.5 micron) grains, whereas the cold (~ 70 K) dust responsible for the longer wavelength silicate features contains primarily large grains (> 1 micron). Since the cold dust emission arises from deeper layers in the inner (< 3 AU) disk as well as from the surface layers of the outer (3-5 AU) disk, this provides direct evidence for combined grain growth and settling in the disk. The inferred crystalline mass fractions in the two components are comparable. Since only the inner 0.02 AU of the disk is warm enough to anneal the amorphous silicate grains, even the lowest fraction of 15% of crystalline material requires either very efficient mixing or other formation mechanisms., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 19 pages and 4 figures. Recent results indicate that the grain size and crystallinity inferred from observations of silicate features may be correlated with spectral type of the central star and/or disk geometry. In this paper, we show that grain size, as probed by the 10 um silicate feature peak-to-continuum and 11.3-to-9.8 um flux ratios, is inversely proportional to log L_star. These trends can be understood using a simple two-layer disk model for passive irradiated flaring disks, CGPLUS. We find that the radius, R_10, of the 10 um silicate emission zone in the disk goes as (L_star/L_sun)^0.56, with slight variations depending on disk geometry (flaring angle, inner disk radius). The observed correlations, combined with simulated emission spectra of olivine and pyroxene mixtures, imply a grain size dependence on luminosity. Combined with the fact that R_10 is smaller for less luminous stars, this implies that the apparent grain size of the emitting dust is larger for low-luminositysources. In contrast, our models suggest that the crystallinity is only marginally affected, because for increasing luminosity, the zone for thermal annealing (assumed to be at T>800 K) is enlarged by roughly the same factor as the silicate emission zone. The observed crystallinity is affected by disk geometry, however, with increased crystallinity in flat disks. We have identified four circumstellar disks with a deficit of dust emission from their inner 15-50 AU. All four stars have F-G spectral type, and were uncovered as part of the Spitzer Space Telescope ``Cores to Disks'' Legacy Program Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) first look survey of ~100 pre-main sequence stars. Modeling of the spectral energy distributions indicates a reduction in dust density by factors of 100-1000 from disk radii between ~0.4 and 15-50 AU, but with massive gas-rich disks at larger radii. This large contrast between the inner and outer disk has led us to use the term `cold disks' to distinguish these unusual systems. However, hot dust [0.02-0.2 Mmoon] is still present close to the central star (R ~0.8 AU). We introduce the 30/13 micron, flux density ratio as a new diagnostic for identifying cold disks. The mechanisms for dust clearing over such large gaps are discussed. Though rare, cold disks are likely in transition from an optically thick to an optically thin state, and so offer excellent laboratories for the study of planet formation., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJL

We investigate the coronal structure of rapidly-rotating, solar-like stars using Chandra HETGS spectra of the short-period binary ER Vul, and by comparison with X-ray observations of the Sun and other dwarf stars. ER Vul consists of two solar-like (G0 + G5) dwarfs with rotation rates ~ 40 times that of the Sun. This binary is not interacting and these stars are the fastest rotating G dwarfs suitable for high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray (1.8-40 Å) spectra were obtained on 2001 March 29-30 along with 10.5 hours of simultaneous VLA monitoring at 3.6 and 20 cm. These spectra show hot, multi-temperature coronal emission with emission lines ranging in temperature from O VII (2 MK) to Fe XXIV (30 MK). ER Vul showed only low-level variability during the X-ray observation. Unlike the behaviour of longer period active binaries, no large, long-duration flares were detected, consistent with previous X-ray observations of this binary. No evidence for eclipses is seen in either the X-ray or radio emission. The coronal emission measure distribution and elemental abundances were derived for ER Vul.

Previous papers have examined the method and accuracy of generating B-spline approximations to PDE surfaces; such approximations being obtained using the finite element method with appropriate B-spline basis functions as the basis. This paper looks at the use of multiple knots in the B-spline surface approximation to a PDE surface with a view to allowing discontinuities in the surface normal at certain locations. The method is applied to the surface of a yacht hull where an analytic solution is known, and hence comparison using approximations to the Euclidean and maximum norms can be made.

Far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation plays an important role in determining chemical abundances in protoplanetary disks. H i Lyman α (Lyα) is suspected to be the dominant component of the FUV emission from Classical T Tauri Stars (CTTSs), but is difficult to measure directly due to circumstellar and interstellar H i absorption. To better characterize the intrinsic Lyα radiation, we present FUV spectra of 14 CTTSs taken with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph instruments. H2 fluorescence, commonly seen in the spectra of CTTSs, is excited by Lyα photons, providing an indirect measure of the Lyα flux incident upon the warm disk surface. We use observed H2 progression fluxes to reconstruct the CTTS Lyα profiles. The Lyα flux correlates with total measured FUV flux, in agreement with an accretion-related source of FUV emission. With a geometry-independent analysis, we confirm that in accreting T Tauri systems Lyα radiation dominates the FUV flux (∼1150 Å –1700 Å). In the systems surveyed this one line comprises 70%–90% of the total FUV flux.

Carbon monoxide is a commonly used IR/submillimeter tracer of gas in protoplanetary disks. We present an analysis of ultraviolet CO emission in Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectra for 12 Classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs). Several ro-vibrational bands of the CO A 1Π–X 1Σ+ (Fourth Positive) electronic transition system are spectrally resolved from emission of other atoms and H2. The CO A 1Π v′ = 14 state is populated by absorption of Lyα photons, created at the accretion column on the stellar surface. For targets with strong CO emission, we model the Lyα radiation field as an input for a simple fluorescence model to estimate CO rotational excitation temperatures and column densities. Typical column densities range from N CO = 1018 to 1019 cm−2. Our measured excitation temperatures are mostly below T CO = 600 K, cooler than typical M-band CO emission. These temperatures and the emission line widths imply that the UV emission originates in a different population of CO than that which is IR-emitting. We also find a significant correlation between CO emission and the disk accretion rate and age. Our analysis shows that ultraviolet CO emission can be a useful diagnostic of CTTS disk gas.

The physical processes leading to the disappearance of disks around young stars are not well understood. A subclass of transitional disks, the so-called cold disks with large inner dust holes, provide a crucial laboratory for studying disk dissipation processes. IRS 48 has a 30 AU radius hole previously measured from dust continuum imaging at 18.7 micron. Using new optical spectra, we determine that IRS 48 is a pre-main sequence A0 star. In order to characterize this disk's gas distribution, we obtained AO-assisted VLT CRIRES high resolution (R ~100,000) spectra of the CO fundamental rovibrational band at 4.7 micron. All CO emission, including that from isotopologues and vibrationally excited molecules, is off-source and peaks at 30 AU. The gas is thermally excited to a rotational temperature of 260 K and is also strongly UV pumped, showing a vibrational excitation temperature of ~5000 K. We model the kinematics and excitation of the gas and posit that the CO emission arises from the dust hole wall. Prior imaging of UV-excited PAH molecules, usually a gas tracer, within the hole makes the large CO hole even more unexpected., 35 pages, 13 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present an analysis of CO emission lines from a sample of T Tauri, Herbig Ae/Be, and transitional disks with known inclinations, in order to study the structure of inner disk molecular gas. We calculate CO inner radii by fitting line profiles with a simple parameterized model. We find that, for optically thick disks, CO inner radii are strongly correlated with the total system luminosity (stellar plus accretion), and consistent with the dust sublimation radius. Transitional disk inner radii show the same trend with luminosity, but are systematically larger. Using rotation diagram fits, we derive, for classical T Tauri disks, emitting areas consistent with a ring of width ~0.15 AU located at the CO inner radius; emitting areas for transitional disks are systematically smaller. We also measure lower rotational temperatures for transitional disks, and disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars, than for those around T Tauri stars. Finally, we find that rotational temperatures are similar to, or slightly lower than, the expected temperature of blackbody grains located at the CO inner radius, in contrast to expectations of thermal decoupling between gas and dust., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We exploit the high sensitivity and moderate spectral resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph to detect far-ultraviolet (UV) spectral features of carbon monoxide (CO) present in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks for the first time. We present spectra of the classical T Tauri stars HN Tau, RECX-11, and V4046 Sgr, representative of a range of CO radiative processes. HN Tau shows CO bands in absorption against the accretion continuum. The CO absorption most likely arises in warm inner disk gas. We measure a CO column density and rotational excitation temperature of N(CO) = (2 ± 1) × 1017 cm−2 and T rot(CO) 500 ± 200 K for the absorbing gas. We also detect CO A–X band emission in RECX-11 and V4046 Sgr, excited by UV line photons, predominantly H i Lyα. All three objects show emission from CO bands at λ > 1560 Å, which may be excited by a combination of UV photons and collisions with non-thermal electrons. In previous observations these emission processes were not accounted for due to blending with emission from the accretion shock, collisionally excited H2, and photo-excited H2, all of which appeared as a “continuum” whose components could not be separated. The CO emission spectrum is strongly dependent upon the shape of the incident stellar Lyα emission profile. We find CO parameters in the range: N(CO) ∼ 1018–1019 cm−2, T rot(CO) ≳ 300 K for the Lyα-pumped emission. We combine these results with recent work on photo-excited and collisionally excited H2 emission, concluding that the observations of UV-emitting CO and H2 are consistent with a common spatial origin. We suggest that the CO/H2 ratio (≡ N(CO)/N(H2)) in the inner disk is ∼1, a transition between the much lower interstellar value and the higher value observed in solar system comets today, a result that will require future observational and theoretical study to confirm.

Circumstellar disks are thought to experience a rapid "transition" phase in their evolution that can have a considerable impact on the formation and early development of planetary systems. We present new and archival high angular resolution (0.3" = 40-75 AU) Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the 880 micron dust continuum emission from 12 such transition disks in nearby star-forming regions. In each case, we directly resolve a dust-depleted disk cavity around the central star. Using radiative transfer calculations, we interpret these dust disk structures in a homogeneous, parametric model framework by reproducing their SMA visibilities and SEDs. The cavities in these disks are large (R_cav = 15-73 AU) and substantially depleted of small (~um-sized) dust grains, although their mass contents are still uncertain. The structures of the remnant material at larger radii are comparable to normal disks. We demonstrate that these large cavities are common among the millimeter-bright disk population, comprising at least 20% of the disks in the bright half of the millimeter luminosity (disk mass) distribution. Utilizing these results, we assess some of the physical mechanisms proposed to account for transition disk structures. As has been shown before, photoevaporation models do not produce the large cavity sizes, accretion rates, and disk masses representative of this sample. It would be difficult to achieve a sufficient decrease of the dust optical depths in these cavities by particle growth alone: substantial growth (to meter sizes or beyond) must occur in large (tens of AU) regions of low turbulence without also producing an abundance of small particles. Given those challenges, we suggest instead that the observations are most commensurate with dynamical clearing due to tidal interactions with low-mass companions --young brown dwarfs or giant planets on long-period orbits., Comment: ApJ, in press

A PDE surface is generated by solving partial differential equations subject to boundary conditions. To obtain an approximation of the PDE surface in the form of a B-spline surface the finite element method, with the basis formed from B-spline basis functions, can be used to solve the equations. The procedure is simplest when uniform B-splines are used, but it is also feasible, and in some cases desirable, to use non-uniform B-splines. It will also be shown that it is possible, if required, to modify the non-uniform B-spline approximation in a variety of ways, using the properties of B-spline surfaces.
