Cemetery waste accounts for only a small amount of municipal waste, but its collection and inadequate management are problematic. The purpose of this study was to identify problems in the operation and logistics of the waste management system through the eyes of the cemetery user and the body responsible for collecting this type of waste. The tradition of caring for and decorating gravestones is significant in the production of cemetery waste. Most waste is generated during the holiday of the dead. The problem is the lack of adequate regulations and a permanent system of cemetery waste management throughout Europe and, for example, Poland. These issues affect both visitors and cemetery managers. Success in logistics of sustainable cemetery waste management can come from canvassing the opinions of cemetery visitors and managers and dissemination of the principles of minimalism.

An increase in demand for energy from renewable sources has increased the hectareage of crops grown for energy purposes. The impact of large-scale energy crop monocultures on soil biodiversity is poorly understood and requires long-term monitoring. Due to their specific lifestyle, Lumbricidae, known as "ecosystem engineers," have found application in biomonitoring of the soil environment. This study aimed to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative structure of Lumbricidae in annual rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and perennial willow (Salix viminalis L.) crops for energy purposes, with a permanent grassland as a control site. The research was conducted on the territory of the Podkarpackie Agricultural Advisory Center in Boguchwała (southeastern Poland). Earthworms were obtained by hand sorting soil blocks of 25 x 25 x 25 cm and a 0.4% formalin solution was used to extract individuals from deeper soil layers. There were no differences in the species composition of Lumbricidae between the analyzed crops. Five species of earthworms, Dendrodrilus rubidus tenius, Lumbricus rubelllus, Aporrectodea caliginosa, A. rosea, and L. terrestris, were found at each study site. Rapeseed had the lowest density (17.26 ± 9.16 ind. m-2) and biomass (5.93 ± 2.42 g m-2) of Lumbricidae (p 0.05). The study demonstrated the beneficial effect of perennial willow cultivation on the quantitative structure of earthworm communities. Only long-term biomonitoring will make it possible to determine the real impact of energy crops on invertebrate assemblages and their appropriate management to promote biodiversity.

Because of the numerous ecosystem services provided by soil, such as elemental cycling, food production, and water filtration and storage, this resource requires special protection to maintain total efficiency of these services. However, standard agricultural practices can have a degrading effect, not only on the physical and chemical properties of soil, but may also threaten soil invertebrate communities. Soil macrofauna, and earthworms in particular, play a critical role in soil ecosystems because their activities affect the availability of nutrients for plants, shape soil structure, and significantly impact organic matter dynamics. The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of two systems used in plant cultivation (no-dig and conventional digging). Both used vermicompost as an organic fertilizer and looked at selected characteristics of Lumbricidae groupings and the dynamics of selected soil physicochemical properties. This study was conducted over three years in the same area to ensure that the soil characteristics were the same. The NDG (no-dig) and DG (conventional digging) sites were prepared as appropriate with a perennial hay meadow (MW) used as a control site. An electrical extraction (octet) method was used to collect earthworms. The same six species of earthworm were found at each site: Dendrodrilus rubidus (Sav.), Lumbricus rubellus (Hoff.), Aporrectodea caliginosa (Sav.), Aporrectodea rosea (Sav.), Octolasion lacteum (Örley), and Lumbricus terrestris (L.). Earthworm abundance and biomass were found to be significantly higher at the NDG site compared to DG (NDG > DG; abundance by 24% (p < 0.05), biomass by 22% (p < 0.05)). No significant differences between NDG and MW were shown. Moisture, temperature, and soil organic carbon content likely influenced the abundance and biomass of Lumbricidae. The NDG site showed significantly higher organic carbon and moisture content and significantly lower temperatures than the DG site. The average number of earthworms damaged by digging was 0.85 ind. m−2, but did not significantly affect the other results. Overall, NDG is preferable to DG for enhancing the earthworm and physicochemical parameters of soil.

Adequate hydration is essential for good health, and an individual’s hydration status is determined by the quantity and type of ingested fluids. The aim of the present study was to determine the hydration status of school-age children and evaluate changes in the type and quantity of consumed beverages between 2018 and 2023. The study was conducted in two stages between 2018 and 2023, and a total of 1030 fully completed questionnaires were returned by the children and their parents. A comparison of the parents’ responses regarding factors that affect beverage choices revealed that beverage composition was more significant for the parents in 2023 than in 2018, whereas health-promoting properties were significant for only less than 30% of the respondents. Taste preferences were important for both the parents and the children, and they were the main criterion in the choice of beverages in both 2018 and 2023. In turn, advertising was an important factor for children, and the percentage of children who were guided by advertising in their choice of beverages increased from 52.1% in 2018 to 58.5% in 2023 (p < 0.05). Daily fluid intake from beverages in children aged 11–13 years generally does not meet recommended intakes. Low fluid intake can negatively affect children’s hydration status and bodily functions. Taste preferences and advertising were correlated with a higher intake of carbonated and non-carbonated sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and dairy beverages. The percentage of children who bought drinks independently and had access to SSBs increased significantly during the analyzed period. Obtain results indicate that nutrition education programs are needed to teach adolescents to make healthy drink choices, limit their consumption of SSBs and EDs, and promote regular intake of natural mineral water and non-sweetened dairy beverages.

The paper points out the need to verify the vision of man's place on Earth, erroneously based so far on the anthropocentric concept. At present, it should result from a biocentric perspective, in which at the existential level man occupies an equal position with other organisms in nature, but using his capacities for rational thinking, he regulates environmental changes on a micro and macro scale so as to enable the development of civilisation and the simultaneous renewal of nature's resources. This can allow sustainable development to be achieved by harmoniously combining economic growth with environmental requirements and participation in civil society building. Adequate university-wide education in this area is needed to create sustainability. In a university, it should be conducted in every field of study. The aim of the publication is to show the global trend towards using the concept of a university subject for teaching sustainable development: home economics and technologies in the world with the possibility of implementation in Poland. The authors also propose a new take on the issue and a dissemination of the above considerations towards homo-ecocentrism.

In the automated world of business, a modern engineer should be characterized by a passion for technology, creativity, innovative capacity, initiative and commitment to scientific and technical progress, ease of adaptation, but also conviction about the mission of technology. Among these, a lack of competence in recognition of, and response to, anthropogenic ecological threats and destruction of biodiversity and ecosystems was noticed. The aim of this article was to draw attention to the problems of educating engineers, to include provision with specialist knowledge and development of necessary competences. The article also refers to the growth of waste production, including packaging waste, presenting an example of the use of activating methods in adult education, deployed in the subject "Waste management" for students of "Renewable energy sources and waste management”, implemented at the University of Rzeszów. Such teaching activity is of great importance in shaping the aforementioned competences.

The study presents the “EREJ” project tested with students at the University of Rzeszów. The project is important for the development of the ability to search for materials for work, it improves the ability to prepare a PPT presentation and writing an essay, skills in oral and written communication, the ability to work on one's own and in a group, the ability to discuss, transmitting feedback, and presenting work in the forum. The project is also important for increasing knowledge in the field of environmental issues.

Background. Pregnancy is one of the few periods in a woman’s life when extra weight is not perceived as a negative factor, but has positive connotations with healthy fetal development, which runs against the modern cult of a perfect, slim and healthy body. Most research studies focus on excessive rather than insufficient weight gain in successive trimesters of pregnancy. Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate women’s knowledge about the influence of diet on pregnancy outcome and to assess changes in body weight and eating behaviors during pregnancy. Materials and methods. The study consisted of an online survey. A total of 325 correctly and completely filled in questionnaires were considered. The respondents were divided into two groups: women without children (44.92%) and pregnant women and mothers (55.08%). The respondents’ knowledge about eating behaviors during pregnancy was compared between the two groups. The responses given by mothers were used to evaluate weight gains during pregnancy and the nutritional status of pregnant women. Results. Changes in body weight during pregnancy were regarded as acceptable and pregnancy weight gain was considered a normal process by 92% of the respondents. Pregnant women had greater knowledge about the need for increased caloric intake in successive trimesters (p=0.0012). The respondents’ knowledge about maternal health and healthy fetal development was assessed with the use of 10 true or false questions. The average score was 6.3±1.8 points, and no significant differences were found between mothers/pregnant women and women without children (6.6±1.3 vs 6.2±1.7, p>0.05). In the present study, 67% of the respondents were of the opinion that they followed a healthy diet, 14% claimed that they did not eat right, but were not motivated to make any changes. Conclusions. The respondents were aware that weight gain during pregnancy is a normal physiological process, but 1/3 of the respondents did not feel comfortable with the observed changes. The respondents did not have sufficient knowledge about the influence of maternal weight on fetal development. The use of diuretics and laxatives by pregnant women without medical consultation is a worrying phenomenon. These results indicate that women should have better access to knowledge about the impact of healthy nutrition on pregnancy outcome.

The study was designed to determine selected components of chemical composition in the body of earthworms cultivated on organic kitchen waste. It was shown that their biomass can be classified as protein-rich, succulent fodder. Notably, this work also specified the contents of 17 essential amino acids, as well as the profile of fatty acids. It also highlighted selected threats to the natural environment caused by food production and food wastage by man. Because of that, this paper also presents the determinants of earthworm biomass production. The possibilities of consuming alternative invertebrate protein were also discussed.

Background. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal disorder that is driven by the gutbrain axis and affects 1-20% of the population. Most patients note that various foods elicit abdominal symptoms, and they eliminate these products from their diets. A diet that is low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) is currently one of the mainstays in IBS treatment. Objective. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of IBS patients about the disease, treatment and the principles of the low-FODMAP diet that can alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms. Material and methods. The participants were adults diagnosed with IBS, the inclusion criteria were: absence of comorbidities requiring an elimination diet, age over 18 years, and consent to participate in the study. The respondents filled out an anonymous questionnaire containing questions about the IBS diagnosis, disease history and treatment, as well as 45 questions assessing the participants’ knowledge about the low-FODMAP diet. Results. In 28% of the cases, IBS was diagnosed by a general practitioner; in nearly 40% of the cases – by a gastroenterology specialist; in 10% of the cases – by a dietitian, whereas the remaining respondents had arrived at the diagnosis independently or with the help of support groups for IBS patients. After diagnosis, only every fourth respondent sought treatment in a gastroenterology clinic. In the studied population, 237 of the respondents had followed to the low-FODMAP diet, and the differentiating factors were sex (p=0.002), place of residence (city with a population higher than 100,000 vs. rural area; p=0.0001) and education (university vs. vocational school p=0.0043). Respondents who had been recently diagnosed with IBS (less than 12 months vs. more than 12 months before the study) were more likely to follow the FODMAP diet. Conclusions. The surveyed population was characterized by high levels of knowledge about the low-FODMAP diet, but many respondents did not strictly comply with dietary guidelines, in particular the duration of each dietary phase. Age was significantly correlated with the respondents’ knowledge, and the participants’ familiarity with low-FODMAP guidelines decreased with age. Nutritional consultations did not significantly improve the respondents’ knowledge about the low-FODMAP diet.

In the following text the memory of Professor Jan Siuta included, founder and long-time President of the Polish Society of Ecological Engineering (PTIE), supporting the activities of local branches, among others, the South-Eastern Branch of PTIE in Rzeszów. The Polish Journal for Sustainable Development scientific journal was recalled, which for over 20 years, until recently with the participation of the Professor in the Scientific Committee, has been promoting ecological engineering and sustainable development. Meetings of Professor Jan Siuta in the academic center in Rzeszów were also exposed.

The current state of the world's ecosystems requires many measures to restore opportunities, if not for their reconstruction, then to stop the rate of biodiversity loss. One of the plane where this should happen is industrial agriculture. In order to diversify the large-scale monoculture crops dominated by cereals and fodder crops, science and practice draws attention to the need to introduce plants of smaller or marginal significance into cultivation. Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is a species with special properties and great utility from ancient times to the present. Currently, Canada is the largest producer of flax in the world, and France, Belgium and the Netherlands in Europe. The aim of the work is to assess the state of its cultivation (area and volume of production) and determine the possibilities of restitution of this species in Poland. The analysis of available materials indicates that the largest areas of flax cultivation occurred in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when flax competed with cotton as a raw material for the production of textile products. In the interwar period, Poland had a well-developed textile industry for flax processing. Large quantities of high-quality linseed oil were also produced. In the 1990s, the production of flax fell to several hundred hectares, and after Poland's accession to the EU, the area of cultivation and production of oil flax increased. Bearing in mind the pro-environmental qualities of flax and linseed fabrics and oil, there is a need to popularize this species and increase the cultivation area, for which climatic and soil conditions in moderate climate are very favorable.

Lumbricidae, as representatives of edaphone, are used in ecological research. Over the years, various attempts to improve the ways of earthworm extraction have been made. One of the pro-environmental methods for extracting these animals from the soil is the method involving the application of electric current (octet). The aim of the study was to compare the efficiency of the earthworm extraction using the mixed method (manual segregation along with the use of 0.5% formalin solution) with the method applying the electroshocking. The species composition of earthworms extracted using both methods was the same (seven species of earthworms belonging to three ecomorphological groups were found). A lower number and biomass of earthworms were found in the permanent grassland and arable land with the help of octet than using the mixed method. Further research is needed to improve the existing methods for Lumbricidae extraction and to implement new ones that would be safe for the edaphon representatives.

The experiment was carried out in 2016-2018 in Łańcut, in the Rzeszów Foothills. The effect of fertilization using sheep manure vermicompost on sweet potato of early cultivar (Carmen Rubin) and selected soil characteristics was investigated. The experiment was based on the method of randomized sub-blocks in four replications. Two cultivation technologies were used, in which the differentiating factor was fertilization applied or the lack of it. In the first technology (I nf - without fertilization), no fertilization was used in the years of research; in the second technology (II fv - fertilization with vermicompost), vermicompost made from sheep manure was applied. The vermicompost increased the yield of sweet potatoes of Carmen Rubin cv. and the share of large tubers in the yield structure. It also influenced the increase of organic carbon and total nitrogen in the soil as well as content of available forms of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. The studied some soil properties were less favorable compared to their condition before the start of the experiment.

Earthworms can be used in the vermicomposting process. The success of the process depends on many factors, including the choice of the appropriate earthworm species. Eisenia fetida and Dendrobaena veneta are treated as "compost earthworms". They are characterized by a relatively short life cycle, relatively fast growth rate, efficient reproduction and a similar amount of organic matter processed, compared to species found in the natural environment. However, while analyzing their features in more detail, it can be seen that these two species differ. The aim of this study was to compare the selected features of the Eisenia fetida (Sav.) and Dendrobaena veneta (Rosa) earthworm populations in an annual cycle. The mature specimens of E. fetida or D. veneta were put in groups into plastic boxes with soil. Populations were checked regularly by manual sorting of the medium. The earthworms and cocoons were cleaned, counted and weighed individually. Afterwards, the mature individuals were placed in appropriate containers, while the cocoons were separated from the starting populations. The earthworms were fed ad libidum on kitchen wastes every four weeks. The experiment was carried out under constant laboratory conditions for 52 weeks. The analysis of the studied populations confirmed that the tested species of earthworms differ from each other. After 52 weeks of the experiment, the sum of earthworm biomass was higher for D. veneta compared to E. fetida species (18.568 ± 1.867 g and 7.263 ± 1.786 g; p

Biomass is one of the most significant renewable energy sources. Doubts arise from large-area plantations of energy monocultures, which can lead to the depletion of, and a decrease in, soil biodiversity. Community association analyses of Lumbricidae may help to indicate environmental change. Therefore, the study objectives were to determine the qualitative and quantitative diversity of Lumbricids in plantations of energy crops—basket willow (Salix viminalis L.), foxglove tree (Paulownia tomentosa Steud.), and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.)—by investigating the following cultivation treatments: SV and SVSS—S. viminalis without (w/o) and with the addition of sewage sludge to the soil (+SS); PT and PTSS—P. tomentosaw/o and + SS; RP and RPSS—R. pseudoacaciaw/o and +SS; and MW—meadow community. A significantly higher density (p < 0.05) and biomass (p < 0.05) of earthworms were found in the SV and SVSS plantations than in other sites. The application of sewage sludge contributed to a significant increase in the mean number and biomass of all Lumbricids within cultivations of S. viminalis and R. pseudoacacia, which were significantly higher than those in the control site. This work suggests that woody energy crop production with an appropriate selection of plants and fertilisation can be a favourable habitat for the development of earthworm populations.

The following elaboration presents a view on the tasks and challenges which should be faced by ecological engineering in the near future. The study also emphasizes the need to disseminate the concept of retarding the pace of transformation of ecosystems and natural resources as well as proper understanding and urgent implementation of strategically correct provisions from the existing legal acts. It also refers to the need to look for the effective methods of disseminating the activities for the protection of ecosystems, in which accepting the concept of "violence on the environment" may be helpful. The ecological engineering activity may be divided into: a) activities in natural areas, including rural ones, to protect and restore their ecosystem services, b) activities in increasingly biologically poorer urbanized and industrialized areas in order to create the conditions for the well-being of residents, in the reality of climate change and the prevention of further rapid change in the region, intensified by anthropogenic pressure, c) involvement in education. In the background of this division, the necessary activities of the active PSEE members include: 1) Discussing, analyzing and pointing out the problems of protection and rational use of the environment as well as natural and anthropogenic resources, 2) Organizing multidisciplinary scientific and educational conferences, 3) Development, publication and dissemination of knowledge in the field of counteracting the environmental degradation as well as the ways of protecting and rationalizing the use of the environment, 4) Cooperation with various organizations (including administration) in solving the ecological and economic problems, 5) Participation in the process of ecological legislation, 6/ Opinions, eco-engineering and counseling for local communities.

Acne is a disorder of sebaceous glands, and it most commonly develops on the face. The role of the diet in triggering and treating acne is controversial and has been widely debated in the literature. A knowledge of the environmental factors that contribute to acne could improve the patient’s physical and emotional well-being, increase the efficacy of treatment, and minimize the risk of anxiety and depressive disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of acne on the daily lives and well-being of people aged 15–30 years, to analyze young people’s knowledge about the influence of various foods and other dietary factors on the prevalence, severity, and treatment of acne, as well as their adherence to an anti-acne diet. The study was conducted between April 2021 and May 2022. A total of 1329 respondents, including 963 women and 366 men, participated in the study. In 99% of men and women respondents, acne breakouts were typically located on the face. An analysis of HADS scores revealed moderate anxiety in 57% of women (F) and 22.5% of men (M) respondents. Acne breakouts located on the face were problematic for 81% of the study population (regardless of sex). More than ¾ of women and 2/3 of men claimed that acne made them feel less attractive. The impact of acne on the participants’ emotional well-being and social life differed between genders. Women experienced psychological discomfort more frequently than men (p = 0.0023). More than 50% of the participants eliminated acne-triggering foods from their diets, and 2/3 of these respondents observed a marked improvement or disappearance of skin breakouts as a result. A significantly higher number of respondents with severe/moderate anxiety were convinced that acne breakouts were affected by diet (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.23–1.87, p < 0.001) and foods with a high glycemic index (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.23–1.94, p < 0.001). Acne affects the patients’ emotional well-being. It can act as a barrier to social interactions and lead to mood disorders of varied severity. Persons with moderate/severe mood disorders associated with anxiety significantly more often recognized the role of dietary factors in acne aggravation, and the severity of mood disorders was directly correlated with more frequent consumption of sweets, sweetened beverages, and foods with a high glycemic index.

Allergic diseases are highly prevalent, and they can exert a significant influence on the patients’ physical and mental well-being, thus affecting the quality of their lives and society as a whole. The aim of this study was to evaluate parental knowledge about allergens, allergy symptoms, and treatment of allergies, and to identify problems with adherence to an elimination diet and the underlying difficulties. Twelve kindergartens and the parents of 1350 preschoolers took part in the first stage of the study. In a screening trial, allergies were diagnosed in 197 children, and their parents participated in the second stage of the study. The child’s age at the onset of the first symptoms was significantly correlated with allergy type. Age was significantly correlated with selected symptoms of an allergic reaction, and skin allergies were more prevalent in younger children. Erythema, skin reddening, and urticaria occurred more frequently in children aged 3–4 years (OR 1.45; 95%CI 1.24–1.77, p < 0.05) and were diagnosed in skin tests (OR 1.36; 95%CI 1.22–1.59, p < 0.05). Allergies to numerous food items were associated with a long-term elimination diet (OR 1.89; 95%CI 1.33–2.19, p < 0.01), as well as problems with preparing safe meals, shopping for food, or dietary adherence when eating out. According to the respondents, lack of support from other family members and compliance with dietary restrictions in kindergartens and when eating out posed the greatest barriers to dietary adherence. Parents do not have sufficient knowledge about environmental allergens and effective strategies for coping with acute allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock. Children with diagnosed food allergies should enjoy a similar quality of life to their healthy peers, which is why the parents should be educated about diet therapy, duration of treatment, and safe food substitutes.

Lumbricidae play a key role in the soil environment as “the ecosystem engineers”. They participate in all the categories of services pro¬vided by ecosystems. In agricultural areas, the conventional intensive farming practices have led to a significant decline in the biological diversity of soils including earthworms. In this study, we attempted to characterize the community structure of earthworms in permanent grassland and arable land of the Didactic & Experimental Station of Rzeszów University in Krasne near Rzeszów. Similar densities of earthworms were observed in the grassland and in the arable land (101.01 ± 18.03 ind. • m-2 and 82.12 ± 18.26 ind. • m-2, respectively) (p > 0.05) as well as a similar biomass of Lumbricidae (77.72 ± 15.30 g • m-2 and 54.34 ± 11.72 g • m-2) (p > 0.05). In the research, 7 species of earthworms were found in the permanent grassland and 6 representatives of Lumbricidae were identified in the arable land. The identified earthworms represented all three main morpho-ecological groups. The density and biomass of epi-endogeic earthworm L. rubellus and the anecic species of L. terrestris were shown to be higher (p < 0.05) in the grassland as compared to the arable land. In order to protect Lumbricidae and to sustain the beneficial role of earthworms in an ecosystem, it is necessary to monitor the negative changes in populations of earthworm species attributed to various farming practices.

In the laboratory experiment, the effect of neonicotinoid Nuprid 200SC at the dose recommended by the manufacturer on the dynamics of population of earthworms Dendrobaena veneta was assessed. The studies were conducted on mature D. veneta specimens, in 4 replications of beddings (control, insecticide) in the climatic chamber. Condition of the population was checked five times, using a method of manual segregation of beddings. Insecticide limited the increase in number and biomass of D. veneta population (both the whole population, mature specimens and immature earthworms), but also restricted its reproduction (it decreased the number of cocoons laid by earthworms (p

Anesthetic drugs have been tested for years on rats, rabbits, dogs, cats and monkeys, which may raise ethical concerns. Researchers do not always pay attention to the possibility of using techniques of anesthesia, analgesia or euthanasia in relation to invertebrate animals. It has previously been shown that earthworms meet the requirements of laboratory animals, and being a good alternative to studies on vertebrates, may also be used as the first stage of testing anesthetics. Lethal concentrations of procaine and lidocaine for E. fetida and D. veneta were established using modified filter paper contact test. Using a modified method developed for testing anesthetics, mature earthworms (clitellate) both species were used to check the effectiveness of lidocaine and procaine in safe immobilizing of earthworms. The reactions of earthworms in contact with anesthetics were different. The possibility of using a higher concentration range of procaine and lidocaine for E. fetida than for D. veneta, as E. fetida demonstrated greater resistance to the stress caused by the action of chemical substances. The response to this stress varied and depended on the concentration used, however higher concentrations of anesthetics caused rapid body movements and discharge of the celomatic fluid as well as morphological changes observed after 48 hours. Procaine was not effective in immobilizing earthworms, but lidocaine proved effective in reversibly immobilizing both species. For E. fetida, lidocaine in concentrations of 1.4 and 1.6 at 95 and 90 min respectively resulted in full immobilization of animals, which then survived following 24h and 48h of recovery. For D. veneta, lidocaine in concentrations 1.3 and 1.4 during 40 min proved effective and safe to use, as all individuals survived following 24h and 48h of recovery.

Celiac disease (CD, enteropathy) is a genetic autoimmune disease (abnormal immune response that attacks healthy tissues) associated with gluten intolerance. The aim of this study was to evaluate and monitor the nutritional status of CD patients, explore the problems associated with diet planning and dietary adherence among children and adults, and assess the impact of these factors on the persistence of CD symptoms. This study was carried out as part of the project entitled “A gluten-free diet without obstacles—eating well and healthy” (POWR 03.01.00-00-T153/18), conducted in Lublin Voivodeship. The study involved 87 persons, including 23 children younger than 18. At the beginning of the study and after nine months, all adult participants (older than 18) were subjected to a body composition analysis with the SECA mBCA 515 analyzer. During the project, the participants attended three consultations with a dietician. During each visit, the subjects’ body weight, nutritional status and diets were evaluated; their diets were modified, and problems relating to dietary adherence were resolved. The initial body composition analysis revealed a risk of sarcopenic obesity in 30% of adult participants, in particular in women (p = 0.003) older than 45 (p = 0.001). The risk of being underweight was diagnosed in 25% of the subjects, in particular, in women younger than 35 (p = 0.0023) and in participants who had been affected by short stature and underweight in childhood, i.e., before CD diagnosis (p = 0.0024). The analysis demonstrated that patients with gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting) of CD were significantly more likely to avoid even accidental exposure to gluten and were more likely to strictly follow GFD recommendations (1.97; 95CI:1.56–2.12, p = 0.0001) and safety guidelines when preparing meals at home (1.76; 95CI: 1.34–192, p = 0.0023). Parents, in particular, parents of toddlers and preschoolers who are at significantly higher risk of CD, adhered strictly to dietary guidelines and did not allow for any exceptions when preparing meals (1.88; 95CI: 1.53–2.09, p = 0.001). Persons at risk of malnutrition were also far less likely to deliberately choose gluten-containing foods (0.74; 95CI: 0.53–0.91, p = 0.021), in particular, patients with Marsh type 3a and 3b classification (p = 0.01) and persons whose intestinal histology scores did not fully improve after switching to a GFD. An assessment of the effectiveness of diet therapy based on the phase angle revealed that dietary recommendations had a positive impact on patients who had been recently diagnosed with CD. In all age groups, the main problem was accidental exposure to gluten, in particular in foods that were not labeled with the crossed grain symbol. A comparative analysis of CDAT questionnaires revealed that dietary advice on eating out significantly improved adherence to a GFD and reduced the frequency of unintentional gluten exposure in all age groups.

Departure from waste storage and maximisation of its utilization is currently the basis of modern waste management. This is favoured by the requirements defined in numerous legal instruments, including both EU directives and local regulations of member states. This also applies to organic waste, especially kitchen waste, which, with adequate education of the public, may constitute waste resources of very good quality to produce e.g. vermicomposts. It is very important, since soils of most European countries require continuous supply of organic matter to replenish humus and nutrients for the plants. The paper describes current trends in the production of kitchen organic waste. Since such waste has been vermicomposted for many years, advantages of this biotechnology have been presented and features of the produced vermicomposts have been characterised.

Earthworms play an important role in soil quality, including forest soils. Their presence in zooedafon, as well as their abundance and species diversity, also indicate the state of the soil profile. The species diversity of the representatives of this group of macrofauna in a beech forest in the Bieszczady Mountains are recounted in this article. Earthworms were investigated in the soil of four sites selected near Ustrzyki Górne in Carpathian beech woods Dentario glandulosae - Fagetum (sites in D. g. Fagetum festucetosum, - typicum, - lunarietosum and - allietosum), every month during the annual cycle during two periods: a/ in 1986-1987 and b/ in 2009-2010. It was done according to the Zicsi’s recommendations, using the Zajonc combinated method. In the 80. thirteen earthworm species were found (total of 1 805 specimens) in the soil of four sites investigated. In decreasing order of numbers there were: Dendrobaena alpina alpina (Rosa 1984), Allolobophora cernosvitoviana (Zicsi 1967), Aporectodea rosea rosea (Sav.,1826), Aporectodea caliginosa (Sav., 1826), Lumbricus terrestris L., 1758, Octolasium lacteum (Orley,1881), Allolobophora carpathica (Cog., 1927), Fitzingeria platyura montana (Cer., 1932), Octodrilus transpadanus (Rosa, 1884), Dendrobaena octaedra (Sav., 1826), Eisenia lucens (Waga, 1857), Lumbricus rubellus (Hoffm., 1843), Dendrodrilus rubidus tenuis (Eisen, 1874). Twenty years later, in the years 2009-2010, eleven earthworm species were found in the soil of the same four sites investigated (total of 660 specimens). There was no occurrence of L. rubellus, and O. transpadanus. For all cited species, vertical distribution dynamics in an annual cycle was investigated as well as the preferred soil layer in terms of soil profile. The features of the delineated earthworm species and the soil levels they prefer allowed their affiliation with the ecological groups defined by Bouche to be considered or determined. Knowledge about the association of earthworms to ecomorphological groups in natural or a little changed ecosystem is becoming very useful, for example at the time of the reclamation of degraded soils with Lumbricidae as bioindicators.

A laboratory experiment, carried out for five months, was designed to assess effects produced by the neonicotinoid Actara 25 WG, used at a dose recommended by the manufacturer, in the dynamics of populations of epigeic earthworms Eisenia fetida (Sav.) and Dendrobena veneta (Rosa). The study was conducted in a climatic chamber and involved balanced biomass of mature specimens representing both species, in 3 replications of soil medium with the insecticide, in addition to controls. The growing populations were inspected five times, by means of manual segregation of the substrate. The insecticide led to an increase in both the number of specimens and biomass of E. fetida population (overall as well as mature and immature worms), yet it reduced their reproduction (decreased number of cocoons) (p

Soil degradation is caused by geological, climatic and biological factors, as well as human activities. One kind of degradation involves loss of soil biodiversity as a result of global environmental changes. A study on earthworms was carried out near Ustrzyki Górne in the Bieszczady Mts (Poland), on a monthly basis, in 1986–1987 and 2009–2010 at various sites within the Carpathian beech forests ( Fagetum carpaticum ). During the years 1986–1987, a total of 13 species of earthworms were found: 6 species on site I, 8 species on site II, and 9 species were recorded within the site III. The highest abundance, i.e. 11 species was found on site IV. The study, which revisited the same locations in 2009–2010, identified only 10 species. In sites I, II and III, 7 earthworm species were found in each, and in site IV –10 species. The authors also investigated the factors endangering the fauna of earthworms in the Bieszczady Mountains, and following the example set by other countries which had made attempts to introduce earthworms into the red lists of the threatened species, it was proposed that such a procedure should be adopted for the endemic species O. transpadanus . It was also observed that specimens of L. terrestris had penetrated the natural areas of the National Park.

Solid foods should be introduced not later than the age of six months, regardless of whether the family adheres to a traditional, vegetarian, or vegan diet. The aim of this study was to compare the knowledge on the complementary feeding of infants older than six months among mothers who adhere to traditional and vegetarian diets and to identify problems that require the assistance of a dietician. A total of 251 mothers of children aged 10–12 months participated in the study. Only 10% of vegetarian mothers declared that they had placed their children on a vegetarian diet, whereas 36 mothers adhered to a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet during complementary feeding in the first year of life. Mothers adhering to a traditional diet were characterized by lower levels of knowledge (4.1 ± 2.3 points) than vegetarian mothers (5.3 ± 2.1 points). Mothers following a traditional diet were more likely to indicate a higher than recommended number of daily meals (OR = 1.76; Cl: 1.31–1.97, p < 0.001). Significant differences were noted in the respondents’ adherence to the BLW method, which was more readily implemented by vegan (p < 0.05) and lacto-vegetarian (p < 0.05) mothers and was least popular among mothers following a traditional diet (OR = 0.81; CI: 0.66–1.23, p < 0.04). Vegetarian mothers unnecessarily delayed the introduction of gluten and potentially allergizing foods to the children’s diets, sometimes even past the age of 12 months.

The aim of the research was to rate the advancement of the naturalisation process that concerned the area recultivated after the sulphur mine in Jeziorko. It was rated by analising the diversity of populations of earthworms from chosen five spots (field I, II, X, XX and XXI) differentiated in terms of time and direction of reclamation. Earthworms were obtained by the mixed method, according to Zajonc. The results were analyzed statistically. On the field II reclaimed for the longest period in forest direction, there were all 7 species of Lumbricidae found, and on field X (shorter reclamation) - 5 of them. In the open spaces of fields I, XX and XXI, representatives of the examined group were not presented. On field XX and XXI, earthworms were preserved only within individual old trees (Malus Mill., Populus L. poplar) growing in this area even before the period of land degradation by the sulfur mines. Within the crowns of these trees, poor clusters consisting of 1 or 2 species of earthworms were discover (A. rosea and/or A. caliginosa).

Children develop food preferences by coming into direct contact with various food products through the senses of taste, touch, sight and smell. The aim of this study was to analyze the food preferences of children aged 4 to 6 years and to determine whether age and gender influence children’s food preferences and whether the preference for sweet taste changes with age. The study involved a paper questionnaire containing images of 115 different food products and dishes. The respondents expressed their preferences by choosing the appropriate emoji (happy, sad or neutral face). The study was conducted between 2018 and 2020, and it involved 684 children from 10 kindergartens. Girls chose a significantly higher number of foods and dishes they liked than boys (p = 0.002), and 4-year-olds gave a higher number of “neutral” responses than 5- and 6-year-olds (p = 0.001). Dietary diversity increased with age, and younger children were familiar with fewer foods than 6-year-olds (p = 0.002). Children had a clear preference for sweet taste, regardless of age and gender. Young children (4-year-olds) were more likely to accept healthy foods despite the fact that they were familiar with fewer products and dishes.

A properly conducted vermicomposting process is an environmentally friendly technology used to transform selected organic waste into vermicompost. This organic fertilizer is increasingly used in agriculture and horticulture as an alternative to mineral fertilizers. Research has investigated the use of vermicompost made from the waste mass of sugar beet pulp as a soil additive in the cultivation of peas (Pisum sativum L.). Experimentally, five treatments consisted of: a heavy clay soil as control (SL); the same soil with 10, 25, and 50% substitution of vermicompost, (V10, V25, and V50, respectively); and a standard peat-based horticulture substrate (GS) for comparison. Analyzed pea characteristics and the content of macro and microelements in their biomass were most favorably influenced by 25 and 50% vermicompost addition, and the values obtained were similar to those in the GS treatment. The lowest values of analyzed traits for P. sativum were found in the SL group. Thus, appropriate addition of vermicompost in the construction of plant growing substrates can reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers and be an alternative to peat in the medium, contributing to reduced use of this valuable environmental resource.

This paper describes the importance of herbal plants on the example of two species of linden and Sorbus aucuparia. Authors reminded the rules of traditional collection of this plants as well as the perspective of sales derived from them raw materials. Article emphasized the importance of returning to the traditional activity of the inhabitants of rural areas and highlighted the role of such activities to maintain the sustainability and biodiversity.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) - CITES is an international system limiting cross-border trade in various species of plants and animals and products made from them. The Convention was signed in 1973 in Washington, DC. Its main task is to reduce or completely eliminate the trade of species, the number of which state or imply that their uncontrolled extraction of the natural environment is detrimental to their survival. Although the provisions of CITES came into force in Poland in March 1990, still the problem is the lack of knowledge of its citizens as well as the adaptation of Polish legislation and its enforcement to the requirements of the Convention. The aim of the study was to present the CITES in the context of slowing the conversion of natural resources. Authors also analyzed data from the customs office and the perception of selected elements of the Washington Convention by representatives of Polish tourists.

Ecosystem services are the benefits resulting from resources and processes in nature. Trees and stand densities constitute a significant element of the landscape (both in urban and rural areas) and serve a number of ecosystem functions, forming an inherent part of each group of benefits singled out on the basis of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. In the thesis, selected ecosystem services of trees and stand densities were detailed - provisioning, regulatory, supporting and cultural functions. Diagnosis of services performed by trees and their valuation may contribute to taking increased care of them and protection during performing various investments, it is therefore appropriate to launch multifaceted ecological education to each person, particularly to those directly responsible for trees and bushes in towns and rural areas. In order to restrict construction stress to trees and bushes, environmental impact assessment has to be made as soon as the construction planning is being made (natural, cultural and landscape conditions should be provided additionally), it is advisable to conduct a dendrological inventory for planning purposes. Appropriate protection of trees and standing densities is also legally regulated by the Nature Conservation Act and the Construction Law. During the investment process, the trees and their settlement conditions should be adequately secured , so that it will not affect their viability. After completed investment, the condition of the tree stand should be monitored.

Food production, based on intensive farming, contributes to high and constantly increasing pollution of soils and other environmental resources. Given this, search for non-conventional sources of animal protein seems justified. The present study was designed to examine opinions of selected Polish consumers related to their acceptance of insect-based food as an alternative source of nutrients. The assessment of attitudes towards alternative sources of nutrients was based on the survey developed at the Faculty of Science, University of Porto in Portugal. Representatives of Polish consumers in the region of Podkarpackie generally did not show open-mindedness towards incorporating insect-based food into their diet. Majority of the respondents, however, recognized the importance of food sector operation based on respect for natural resources. Therefore, it seems important that consumers be informed about the advantages of production or use of insect biomass originating from natural ecosystems. This may contribute to increased acceptance for alternative sources of protein, which consequently may lead to reduced environmental pressure of traditional livestock farming and to retardation of ecosystems transformation and loss of biological diversity.

The aim of the study was to learn about young people’s judgments on sustainable development and environmental protection depending on their school profile and education. The presentation of their opinions was considered important for assessing the state of sustainable development 30 years after the publication of the Bruntland Report. The perception of the phenomenon of “ecological violence” and the opinions regarding the directions of actions to combat it were also identified. In the authors’ opinion, this concept should be included in the ethical foundations of human behaviour in the 21st century. The research was conducted in 2017 with students of the Faculties of Biology and Agriculture and of Pedagogy at the University of Rzeszow and students of the Faculty of Management at the Rzeszow University of Technology. In order to achieve the study goals, a diagnostic survey using a questionnaire was used. The results indicate that education in sustainable development is not carried out equally in all university institutions. It is often underestimated, although the media clearly emphasise the need to solve current problems in such a way as to minimise the negative effects of sustainability-related decisions made on the economic, social, and ecological dimensions of life. All these dimensions are equally important for the welfare of the human species. The results of the study may indicate the directions of activities necessary in education for sustainable development in the 21st century. In search of effective educational and implementation activities for broadly defined sustainable development, it is also worth presenting, examining, and refining the term “ecological violence”. This article touches on the above issue and is a preliminary consideration in this respect. The authors hope that it will lead them and potential readers to a deeper analysis of the possible meaning of the term “violence” also in relation to environmental resources. The presented research results are regarded as preliminary findings for a deeper analysis of this issue in the future.

Distribution of Dendrobaena alpina covers the mountainous region of central Europe, where it has a high dominance and frequency index. This work describes data from field studies conducted over two annual cycles in the Bieszczady National Park (BNP), Poland, in different types of beech forest. Densities of this species ranged from 47–231 g·m-2 with associated biomasses of 19–90 g·m-2. Most (66%) were recovered from less than 0.1 m soil depth with a further 28% from up to 0.2 m. Further, the animals were collected alive from Lutowiska, close to the BNP to obtain baseline data on the life history of D. alpina. Mature individuals were kept in isolation and cocoon production monitored on a 2 monthly basis. Immature individuals were kept until they reached maturity, when they were paired, with combined output of cocoons regularly monitored. Cocoons were collected, had their masses determined and were incubated. Hatchability was recorded, as was estimated duration of incubation and growth to maturity. Field-collected adults had a mean mass of 1.4 g and at 15 ºC, these produced an average of 1.83 cocoons·worm-1·month-1. Zero cocoons were produced by further specimens, collected as immature, grown to maturity and maintained in isolation. Recently-matured, paired D. alpina produced an average of 1.65 cocoons·worm-1·month-1. Cocoons had a mean mass of 19 mg. At 15 ºC, cocoons produced by recently matured adults hatched after 80 days (82% viable), but after 2 months the majority of cocoons failed to hatch. Hatchling growth from an average of 18 mg to maturity required 7–11 months in the given substrate.

During vermicomposting, earthworm grower has to overcome a lot of different problems. For instance, in case of a sudden requirement to sell earthworms it is useful to have the ability to collect them in one place. Fresh food extraction is an effective and neutral way to do it. The efficiency of gathering and extracting E. fetida from the vermicompost was studied, using a fresh bait method. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory (at the mean temperature of 20±0.5 °C) in pots filled with vermicompost. Generally, two hundreds of adult E. fetida were put in every pot and left there for 24 hours. After such acclimatization, various baits were inserted to every pot. Different experiments allowed to conclude that: 1) repeated bait exchange was more efficient in extracting worms from vermicompost than bait laid once for a longer time; 2) extracting worms from the bait in the morning was quicker than extracting them in the evening; 3) addition of valerian (Valeriana officinalis), nettle (Urtica dioica), and flaxseeds to cattle manure could resulted in better extraction than pure manure; 4) dry valerian was more effective than steamed one, but on other hand, steaming of nettle and flaxseeds was giving better results in collecting worms in the bait.

Vermicomposting is a method that allows for the environmentally friendly management of plant organic waste through the activity of concentrated earthworm populations. As a result of an appropriately conducted process, it is possible to obtain a valuable organic fertilizer, abundant in nutrients for plants as well as the development of a favorable (qualitatively and quantitatively) earthworm population structure. This paper presents the results of the vermicomposting process of waste plant mass with the use of vermireactors with different designs. In conventional no protective substrate (NPS) vermireactors, plant waste was the only habitat for earthworms, whilst protective substrate (PS) vermireactors also had a medium to shield the earthworm population in the event of the accidental introduction of toxic waste to these invertebrates. A positive effect of the PS vermireactor construction in the protection of an earthworm population against the potential use of stressful waste was found, as populations of Eisenia fetida were monitored and the development was noted during the vermicomposting with both methods. The largest differences between the populations (PS vs. NPS vermireactors) were demonstrated after 40 and 50 days and related to the number of immature animals (PS > NPS by 30.7%; p < 0.05) and cocoons (PS > NPS by 34.8%; p < 0.05). There were no significant differences between the PS and NPS in the biomass of immature E. fetida and cocoons. The vermicomposts obtained were not significantly different form each other but they were characterized by a higher content of C, N, P, K, Ca and Mg compared to the initial waste biomass. Contents of Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd and Pb in vermicomposts did not prevent their use as fertilizers.

Due to a need for sustainability in agriculture, waste products ought to be utilized in the most appropriate way. A study was undertaken relating to the vermicomposting of Cameroon sheep dung (CSD) by the earthworm Dendrobaena veneta. Processing of this waste was investigated using unadulterated CSD and in a 1:1 mixture with unpalatable (waste) hay (CSDH). Results demonstrated that these materials were actively processed by D. veneta with vermicomposts obtained which can be characterized by a higher amount of total nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (average, respectively, 17.0, 10.5, 13.2 g kg−1 d.m.), as well as lower total carbon and magnesium content (respectively, 340 and 3.2 g kg−1 d.m.), compared with the initial waste material. No significant differences were found between CSD and CSDH vermicomposts with respect to chemistry. Levels of selected trace elements (average: Cu 17.5–18.8, Cr 5.7–5.8, Pb 13.5–14.4, Ni < 3, Cd < 0.4 mg kg−1 d.m.) in both vermicomposts did not exclude their application to agricultural soil as a fertilizer.

This paper describes vermicomposting of kitchen organic waste with the use of Eisenia fetida earthworms in an ecological box. To control excessively proliferated Sciaridae in the box medium, an Owinema bio-preparation, which contains larvae of the nematode Steinernema feltiae, was used. The effect of this bioinsecticide on the earthworm population during vermicomposting of organic waste was assessed. It was found that the applied bio-preparation effectively limited the population of sciarids and also had a positive effect on the development of the earthworm population (it caused a significant increase in the number and biomass of mature and immature forms and cocoons produced (p < 0.05)). The Owinema preparation also had a positive effect on the rate of organic waste vermicomposting.

The article attempts to explain the term retardation of pace of life and transforming natural resources, highlights the complexity of the concept and presents proposals for action for its dissemination. Retardation of resources transformation is an important tool for the implementation of the new approach on those environmental resources and services that are left. Environmental education that supports the implementation of retardation should use active methods of education and should be interpreted widely (as an environment of natural and socio-economic character), serving the participatory public which is in need to re-build a holistic recognition of itself and the world.

Development and implementation of the agri-environmental program is mandatory for each member state of the European Union. Polish agri-environmental program focuses not only on extensification of agricultural production but also at sustaining of existing Europe’s largest biodiversity in the rural areas. The agri-environmental program is an alternative to the conventional agriculture and is designed to encourage farmers to adopt practices that lead to the greening of agricultural production and is contributes to the retardation of intensive transforming of habitats in rural areas. Agricultural producers in the Podkarpackie voivodeship are seeking new opportunities and they see a chance for the development of their farms also in agri-environmental program. Survey research has shown that the majority of the farmers decided to participate in the agri-environmental actions for economic reasons and in the extent of their knowledge and the way in which they perceive environmental issues do not differ much from the surveyed parties who do not carry out agrienvironmental program. Even thought they composted organic waste, do not dispose them in the illegal dumpsites and they claim (98%) that they comply with the Code of Good Agricultural Practice (while in the group who do not realize the program that answer was provided only by 20% of the respondents), they did not recognize the threat to the environment due to the deterioration of biodiversity.

This paper presents the results of the process of vermicomposting waste biomass of littoral plants Typha latifolia, Iris pseudacorus, Ceratophyllum demersum in vermireactors, with the use of earthworms Eisenia fetida. It was observed that E. fetida may be used for rapid utilization of pure I. pseudacorus and C. demersum waste, but using the technology presented in this paper and the assumed observation time, it was not possible to recycle T. latifolia waste. Vermicomposts obtained were characterized by higher N, P, K, Ca, and Mg content compared to the initial plant biomass. The content of Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd, and Pb in vermicomposts did not exclude their application as a fertilizer. During vermicomposting of all littoral plants, the earthworm population was maintained up to day 70 of the experiment, with a slight decrease in their number (on average by 6%, p > 0.05), and since day 35, a significant loss in earthworm biomass was observed. The greatest loss of mean sum of biomass (49%, p < 0.05) was noted in a group of earthworms utilizing T. latifolia. The earthworms reproduced, with the greatest mean number (and the sum of biomass) of cocoons observed in a group of earthworms processing C. demersum. These values were greater by 32% and 38% respectively (p < 0.05), for the aforementioned characteristics of cocoons produced in the remaining experimental groups.

This paper describes selected effects of body contact of earthworms Dendrobaena veneta Rosa with local anaesthetic (LA) drugs used for human anesthesia (lidocaine and prilocaine) and anaesthetics for aquatic animals (MS-222). The findings showed safe and effective immobilization of earthworms with prilocaine at a concentration of 0.25-1%. At the applied concentrations lidocaine was safe, but less effective. On the other hand, MS-222, at the applied concentrations had a strongly irritating effect for earthworms and induced convulsive body movements connected with a discharge of coelomic fluid. The results may be relevant both for improving the welfare of earthworms during experiments and for the organization of research involving testing drugs on invertebrates. In this case, by using earthworms as an experimental model and by applying the method for measuring their mobility after contact with anaesthetics, which has been described in this article, it might be possible to replace experiments on guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and mice, which are expensive and require an approval of an ethics committee, with laboratory tests on earthworms.

This study determined the possibility of using the vermicompost produced from kitchen waste (by Eisenia fetida earthworms) to grow sugar peas. Its influence on the dynamics of sprouting of peas and their growth to 21st day was investigated in a pot experiment. Four combinations were realised (control – standard garden soil; (50W) – its mixture with 50% of vermicompost; (25W) and (10W) – with 25% and 10% of vermicompost addition respectively (n=5)). Vermicompost from kitchen waste turned out to be useful in the cultivation of peas. No significant differences in the impact of all the analysed substrates on the sprouting of this plant were found. A 10% vermicompost addition (10W) was shown to be the most favourable substrate. Its positive influence was shown in the impact on the increase of total average mass (by 33%; p
