In the site selection procedure of Germany three host rocks: rock salt, clay and crystalline rock are considered. In accordance with §1 (6) of the StandAG (German Site Selection Act), an additional disposal of ILM/LLW (intermediate level/low level waste) might be allowed at the same site, provided that its characteristics satisfy the best possible safety criteria for the sole disposal of HLW waste. This point will be addressed within the framework of preliminary safety investigations pursuant to §27 (5) of the StandAG in the individual phases of site selection process for the HLW repository, according to the current state of science and technology.The GemEnd research project (2022, in press) investigates the possible mutual influence of these different types of repositories at the same site and the resulting safety-relevant consequences for the HLW repository system in Germany.This contribution provides an overview of the currently existing international disposal programs of non-heat-generating waste (ILW/LLW) and heat-generating waste (HAW) at the same site in the following countries: Belgium, France, Finland, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) also considers co-disposal of HLW and ILW/LLW as an option that has advantages over separate repositories. But particular critical interactions caused by gas formation and gas transport as well as interactions of cementitious materials with other engineered components and the host rocks should not be forgotten (IAEA 2009, 2018).On this basis, existing international disposal programs for HLW and ILW/LLW at the same site are compared with each other. Important similarities and differences for the transferability of the findings to the site selection procedure in Germany are presented. Finally, the approach of other countries can contribute to a better assessment of the safety implications in Germany.

The on-going research project „Identification and evaluation of processes that can arise by disposing of both high level radioactive waste (HAW) and low to intermediate level radioactive waste (LAW/MAW) at the same site“ (GemEnd, FKZ 4719F10401), commissioned by the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), is concerned with the question which thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, chemical and biological (THMCB) processes could be of importance for the long-term safety of the geological repository for high level radioactive waste. The focus of the project is on mutual influences between the HAW and LAW/MAW repositories, which should be constructed separately according to the Safety Regulations (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, BMU, 2020). A second point of emphasis is on processes that could result from the disposal of small amounts of LAW/MAW within the HAW repository. The analyses carried out for each of the potential host rocks clay rock, rock salt and crystalline rock as well as for a combination of clay rock above crystalline rock at a generic site are divided into a qualitative and a quantitative part. As for the qualitative analyses, all potentially relevant processes are identified and evaluated as to whether they are negligible or principally relevant for the exemplary repository configurations considered and according to the current state of knowledge. With regard to the quantitative analyses, the possible extent of potentially safety-relevant processes is illustrated by means of coupled numerical simulations. Of special interest are the effects of particularly sensitive model approaches and/or parameters and notably of the distances between the HAW and LAW/MAW repositories in the different exemplary repository configurations considered. From the results of the quantitative and qualitative analyses, knowledge gaps will be identified and the possibility of their reduction by research and development activities will be discussed. Furthermore, aspects of the transferability of the results to the German site selection procedure will be illuminated. At the interdisciplinary research symposium safeND selected preliminary results of both the qualitative and quantitative analyses will be presented.

It has been recently recognized that the availability of liquid water may be a controlling factor in the feedback between the physical processes of variably saturated liquid and gas flow on the one hand, and various chemical processes such as metal corrosion in an underground storage facility for radioactive waste on the other hand (e.g., Huang et al., 2021, and reference therein). Iron corrosion in anoxic conditions produces hydrogen gas and consumes water, as expressed by the following stylized chemical equation (e.g., Diercks and Kassner, 1988; Senior et al., 2021): 3Fe+4H2O⟶Fe3O4+4H2 Since water is an educt the corrosion reaction may be suspended or suppressed by the scarcity of water near the corroding surfaces. At the same time, gas pressure build-up through hydrogen generation may limit further water ingress. We developed a model that focuses on the close coupling between gas generation through iron corrosion and water availability. The feedback between iron corrosion, gas generation and liquid phase flow is considered by implementing the corrosion reaction in the subsurface flow and transport simulator PFLOTRAN (Hammond et al., 2012; Lichtner et al., 2015, 2020) making use of its coding provisions to implement source/sink terms for water and gas. These source/sink terms reflect the kinetics of the iron corrosion and its dependence on the educts, where the availability of water is approximated by the local liquid saturation. The model was applied to evaluate the mobility of radionuclides in, and their release from a hypothetical geological storage facility for radioactive waste. The radionuclides are traced through the emplacement chambers and drift by means of advective and diffusive transport. Parameter variations illustrate the influence of crucial modelling parameters on the simulation results.

To prevent undercooling of the ground in densely populated areas, regeneration of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs), for example by solar thermal heat, may become necessary. However, the usable roof area is often small compared to the building’s heat demand, especially in urban areas. It was investigated how much regeneration is possible in districts that are supplied entirely by heat pumps with BHEs. Example buildings were modelled based on the buildings of two districts in Zurich. Uncovered PVT collectors and glazed flat-plate collectors were used as regeneration sources. The possible regeneration was determined in a simulation process that included the effects of mutual influences between the BHEs of neighbouring buildings. As expected, glazed flat-plate collectors allow for more regeneration than uncovered PVT collectors. For full regeneration, the required usable roof area relative to the annual heat demand is about 1.8m2/MWh for PVT and 1.2m2/MWh for flat-plate collectors. Large buildings often do not provide sufficient roof area for full regeneration. A sustainable heat supply of the entire district with regenerated BHEs can be possible in suburban neighbourhoods, if the bigger buildings are distributed rather evenly. In urban neighbourhoods, areas may exist in which solar thermal regeneration alone is not sufficient.

Die begrenzten Ressourcen einerseits und der berechtigte Schutz des Grundwassers andererseits macht die Normierung seiner Nutzung erforderlich.
