Industry 4.0 concept is based on digitalization, networking, and value-creation. The Industry 4.0 efforts comprise sensing, connectiveness, systems integration, advanced automation, manufacturing data-driven, and cyber-physical production system in the manufacturing systems-context. The digital capabilities and resources provided by Industry 4.0 need to be coordinating for value-creation. For this purpose, the manufacturing systems concentrate these efforts around Production Planning and Control Function (PPC) and their systems. PPC function is considered the “brain” of manufacturing. PC function is considered the “brain” of manufacturing. Therefore, the digitalization and efforts toward Industry 4.0 are mandatory when PPC’s role is providing to manufacturing companies their performance goals and competitive advantage to cope with digital business strategies. We carry out a literature survey of over 50 journal articles to determine the core Industry 4.0 technologies, key-factors and resources, and input/output capabilities, which support a smart PPC status. Therefore, our results found the main five Industry 4.0 ecosystems for Smart PPC: Industrial Internet of Things, industrial big data and analytics/artificial intelligence, cloud manufacturing, ICTs and accessory technologies, and cyber-physical production systems. We establish 36 resources/key-factors and ten input/output capabilities along with a digital thread that links these Industry 4.0 technologies’ ecosystems. In last, we develop a technological relationship model for smart PPC based on these resources and capabilities provided by the five Industry 4.0 technologies spread over ten activities in three PPC levels: aggregate planning, detailed planning, and production control.

In the last five decades, maturity models have been introduced as reference frameworks for Information System (IS) management in organizations within different industries. In the healthcare domain, maturity models have also been used to address a wide variety of challenges and the high demand for hospital IS (HIS) implementations. The increasing volume of data, is exceeded the ability of health organizations to process it for improving clinical and financial efficiencies and quality of care. It is believed that careful and attentive use of Data Analytics in healthcare can transform data into knowledge that can improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency. A maturity model in this conjuncture, is a way of identifying strengths and weaknesses of the HIS maturity and thus, find a way for improvement and evolution. This paper presents a proposal to measure Hospitals Information Systems maturity with regard to Data Analytics. The outcome of this paper is a maturity model, which includes six stages of HIS growth and maturity progression.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are complex and dynamic organizations in terms of information management, forcing their information systems to respond to enormous challenges and threats. In order to evaluate the HEIs’ information systems, we propose the development of a maturity model capable of supporting the role of HEI’s managers, as well as accreditation agencies, in the assessment of the maturity of these systems, thus, promoting continuous improvement. In this paper, we present and discuss our proposal for an architecture of the maturity model being developed. This one is based on a two-dimensional architecture composed of vertical and horizontal dimensions. We selected a multi-case study approach, based on five Portuguese HEIs, and reviewed the literature to identify the dimensions. This case study was supported by interviews with experts from the selected HEI. The results of this research work were both encouraging and promising amongst the interviewed experts, revealing a high level of acceptance of the general model architecture, as well as positive expectations about its usefulness in the future. The development of our maturity model is carried out by following a formal methodology specially designed to support the construction of this type of model.

Electronic business can bring competitive advantages to tourism agencies leading them to better understand their customers while at the same time compete at a global scale for new markets and new opportunities. Guiding a company through new territory pushes management to adapt its strategy and to find a systematic way of conducting potential decisions. Maturity models can be a potential tool that supports decision making across a company’s departments, as they contribute by helping to identify the current state of maturity in which companies are found while simultaneously providing guidance on steps to achieve a more integrated and competitive enterprise. The main purpose of the work presented in this article is to dive into electronic business maturity models, identify key components between models and justify the most appropriate model as well as the prominent success factors and barriers to achieve a higher maturity.

“Cyber-attacks can be more dangerous than guns and tanks”. This statement was made by Junker in his speech in the EU “State of the Union” in 2017 and reflects the extreme importance of this phenomenon. The increasing variety of devices that can access to Internet has contributed to the overall growth of internet users, in all kinds of places and circumstances. These devices are now part of our lives and we use it for everything. As the number of devices and tasks that we do with it are growing, more prone we are to cyber-attacks. As well, as the number of user’s victim of these attacks are increasing, the general concerns about cybercrime are growing too. The growing list of cybercrimes includes crimes that have been made possible by computers, such as network intrusions and the dissemination of computer viruses, as well as computer-based variations of existing crimes, such as identity theft and terrorism which have become as major problem to people and nations. In this context, the European Union is leading the effort to regulate the defence against cyber-threats in both normative/legal and strategic levels. This reality is also very present in Portugal, where there is a sense of lack of control and capacity to combat this kind of threats. In this article, we present the European Strategy and Legislation for Cybersecurity and how this strategy applies and involves Portugal.

This article presents the first phase of a research project whose purpose is to introduce a new form of collaboration and communication between the school and the family through an Electronic Booklet (EB). The EB was developed due to the increasing necessity of collaboration between the school and the family, promoting the teaching-learning process and educational success, supported by information and communication technologies. These conclusions and justifications were derived from a survey based in a questionnaire applied to guardians and teachers of several private and public Portuguese schools of the primary and secondary education level. Both groups – guardians and teachers stressed the importance of communication between school and family and expressed interest in the EB as a communication tool. The analysis of the survey results made possible the construction of an Electronics Booklet prototype.

Maturity models facilitate organizational management, including information systems management, with hospital organizations no exception. This article puts forth a study carried out with a group of experts in the field of hospital information systems management with a view to identifying the main influencing factors to be included in an encompassing maturity model for hospital information systems management. This study is based on the results of a literature review, which identified maturity models in the health field and relevant influencing factors. The development of this model is justified to the extent that the available maturity models for the hospital information systems management field reveal multiple limitations, including lack of detail, absence of tools to determine their maturity and lack of characterization for stages of maturity structured by different influencing factors.

Internet has changed our lives radically since its inception. It has a particular impact in companies, revolutionizing the way they do business, namely on how they store their information and promote their products. In this new context, two hot topics have been decisive factors in the competitiveness of companies: Digital Marketing and e-Commerce. Obviously, Tourism has not been left out of this reality and thus, this sector has significantly changed the way it is managed. In fact, there is a growing panoply of tourism products and services, widespread all over the world. Traditional marketing and commerce methods are obsolete to deal with these new necessities, where the requirements are always changing. It is therefore a key aspect for players to adapt to new ways of promoting and selling products, as only then they can succeed. Although, despite the obligation to use digital media to promote today’s tourism, it must be understood that this evolution also implies significant changes for the players in the sector.

The increasing use of a variety of devices that can access the Internet has contributed to the overall growth of Internet use. The growth of Internet use also leads to a general increase in cybercrime concerns as well as the number of users’ victims of this permanent threat. This reality is also very present in Portugal where there is a sense of lack of control and combat of this kind of cyber-threats. In this context, it is important to know some indicators associated with cybercrime, in order to take the best measures/actions in a reasoned way, to combat this phenomenon. This article presents the results of a study carried out in 2017 by the European Commission, whose analysis helps to understand the Portuguese positioning in the concerns and experiences about cybercrime, in relation to the average of the European Community citizens. Analysing this study, it was possible to perceive that the Portuguese’s concerns about cybercrime are in line with the average of the European citizens, although the percentage of Portuguese experienced these attacks is, for now, below average. Based on these results, it is possible to identify some public policies that aim to mitigate this phenomenon.

In the last decades the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) have been faced with new challenges, requiring profound changes in their internal and external processes. The HEI have handled this new reality by means of the dematerialization of those processes. Thus, capable Information Systems (IS) are required to support such complex processes. Another aspect is related with the lack of standardization in the HEI’ academic management processes, each HEI works according to its own internal regulations, putting a strong barrier for the adoption of standard packages of software, as happens in enterprises with the ERP. These two factors combined, turns the work of IT managers very difficult in terms of management and knowing how really the IS is capable of support those HEI’s processes.

Maturity models have been introduced, over the last four decades, as guides and references for Information System (IS) management in organizations from different sectors of activity. In the educational field, maturity models have also been used to deal with the enormous complexity and demand of Educational Information Systems. This article presents a research project that aims to develop a new comprehensive maturity model for the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) area. The HEIMM (Higher Education Institutions Maturity Model) will be developed to help HEI to address the complexity of there IS, as a useful tool for the demanding role of the management of these systems, and institutions as well. The HEIMM will have the peculiarity of congregating a set of key maturity influence factors and respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of the HEI IS but also the individual maturity of its different dimensions. In this article, we present the second phase of our project by discussing the methodology for the development of maturity models that will be adopted for the design of the HEIMM and the underlying reasons for its choice.

Maturity models (MM) have been introduced, over the last five decades, as guides and references for the information system management in organizations from different sectors of activities. In the education sector, MM have also been used to evaluate higher education institutions (HEI) in several dimensions, such as ICT, management, process management, course curricula, course/HEI accreditation, e/m-learning, online courses and pedagogical strategies. The HEI have an enormous complexity due to the specificity and quantity of their processes, demanding capable information systems (IS) and tools to manage these IS. Based on the guidelines of a methodology for a systematic literature review, the MM of different subareas of education are identified and categorized in this paper. For each MM associated with HEI IS, it is identified the methodology of development and validation, as well as the scope, stages and their characteristics by dimensions. This study resulted in the need to develop a MM for IS that supports HEI in their core business activities and management.

It is believed that careful and attentive use of Data Analytics (DA) in healthcare can transform data into knowledge that can improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency. A maturity model in this conjuncture, is a way of identifying strengths and weaknesses of the HIS maturity and thus, find a way for improvement and evolution. This paper presents a proposal to measure Hospitals Information Systems maturity with regard to DA. The outcome of this paper is a maturity model, which includes six stages of HIS growth and maturity progression.

Perioperative care is changing through advances in technology with the aim of maximizing quality and value. Future transformation in care will be enabled by data and consequently by knowledge. This paper describes a knowledge management and data science research project and its results based on a study applied to the perioperative department at Hospital Dr. Nelio Mendonca between 2013 and 2015. Conservative practices, such as manual registry, are limited in their scope for preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative decision making, discovery, extent and complexity of data, analytical techniques, and translation or integration of knowledge into patient care. This study contributed to the perioperative decision making process improvement by integrating data science tools on the perioperative electronic system (PES) assembled. Before the PES implementation only 1,2% of the nurses registered the preoperative visit and after 87,6% registered it. Regarding the patient features it was possible to assess anxiety and pain levels. A future conceptual model for perioperative decision support systems grounded on data science should be considered as a knowledge management tool.

Maturity Models have been introduced, over the last four decades, as guides and references for Information System management in organizations from different sectors of activity. In the healthcare field, Maturity Models have also been used to deal with the enormous complexity and demand of Hospital Information Systems. This article presents a research project that aimed to develop a new comprehensive model of maturity for a health area. HISMM (Hospital Information System Maturity Model) was developed to address a complexity of SIH and intends to offer a useful tool for the demanding role of its management. The HISMM has the peculiarity of congregating a set of key maturity Influence Factors and respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of a HIS but also the individual maturity of its different dimensions. In this article, we present the methodology for the development of Maturity Models adopted for the creation of HISMM and the underlying reasons for its choice.

Maturity models (MM) have been adopted in organisations from different sectors of activity, as guides and references for Information Systems (IS) management. In the educational field, these models have also been used to deal with the enormous complexity and demand of IS management. This paper presents a research project that aims to develop a new MM for Higher Education Institutions (HEI) that helps them to address those problems, as a useful tool for the management of their IS (and institutions as well). Thus, the MM in this area are identified, as well as the characteristics and gaps that they present, justifying the need and the opportunity for a new and comprehensive MM. Finally, we discuss the methodology for the development of MM that will be adopted for the design of the new model (called HEIMM) and the underlying reasons for its choice. At the moment, we are developing the HEIMM.

A preliminary analysis to the individual student process (ISP) allowed to detect difficulties and delays in its access far beyond the desirable. It was also noted that not always the interested parties had access to the information required. This, obviously, was one of the reasons that motivated the investigation related to student’s academic registration process course throughout compulsory education, in Portuguese and foreign schools. The idea, here presented and discussed — automation of Individual Student Process accessible through cloud computing — has clearly become essential to ease the consultation of this registry, simplifying the information circulation among all participants (schools, students, parents, teachers and institutions) simultaneously reducing bureaucracy in educational transitions inside and outside Portugal.

The maturity models are facilitating instruments of organizational management, including the management of information systems (IS) function, not being execption hospital organizations. This article presents a study conducted with a group of experts from the field of the Hospital Information Systems (HIS) to identify the main influence factors that should be present in a comprehensive maturity model for the management of HIS. The development of this model takes place within a doctoral project and is justified to the extent that current maturity models in the field of HIS management are still in an early development stage, and especially because they are poorly detailed, do not provide tools to determine the maturity stage nor structure the characteristics of maturity stages according to different influencing factors.
