The aim of this updated systematic review was to offer an overview of the effectiveness of environmental surveillance (ES) of SARS-CoV-2 as a potential early-warning system (EWS) for COVID-19 and new variants of concerns (VOCs) during the second year of the pandemic. An updated literature search was conducted to evaluate the added value of ES of SARS-CoV-2 for public health decisions. The search for studies published between June 2021 and July 2022 resulted in 1,588 publications, identifying 331 articles for full-text screening. A total of 151 publications met our inclusion criteria for the assessment of the effectiveness of ES as an EWS and early detection of SARS-CoV-2 variants. We identified a further 30 publications among the grey literature. ES confirms its usefulness as an EWS for detecting new waves of SARS-CoV-2 infection with an average lead time of 1–2 weeks for most of the publication. ES could function as an EWS for new VOCs in areas with no registered cases or limited clinical capacity. Challenges in data harmonization and variant detection require standardized approaches and innovations for improved public health decision-making. ES confirms its potential to support public health decision-making and resource allocation in future outbreaks. In Europe, systematic national surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in food-producing animals has been conducted for decades; however, geographic distribution within countries remains unknown. To determine distribution within Europe, we combined 33,802 country-level AMR prevalence estimates with 2,849 local AMR prevalence estimates from 209 point prevalence surveys across 31 countries. We produced geospatial models of AMR prevalence in Escherichia coli, nontyphoidal Salmonella, and Campylobacter for cattle, pigs, and poultry. We summarized AMR trends by using the proportion of tested antimicrobial compounds with resistance >50% and generated predictive maps at 10 × 10 km resolution that disaggregated AMR prevalence. For E. coli, predicted prevalence rates were highest in southern Romania and southern/eastern Italy; for Salmonella, southern Hungary and central Poland; and for Campylobacter, throughout Spain. Our findings suggest that AMR distribution is heterogeneous within countries and that surveillance data from below the country level could help with prioritizing resources to reduce AMR.

Abstract Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater-based surveillance gained great international interest as an additional tool to monitor SARS-CoV-2. In autumn 2021, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health decided to pilot a national wastewater surveillance (WWS) system for SARS-CoV-2 and its variants between June 2022 and March 2023. We evaluated the system to assess if it met its objectives and its attribute-based performance. Methods We adapted the available guidelines for evaluation of surveillance systems. The evaluation was carried out as a descriptive analysis and consisted of the following three steps: (i) description of the WWS system, (ii) identification of users and stakeholders, and (iii) analysis of the system’s attributes and performance including sensitivity, specificity, timeliness, usefulness, representativeness, simplicity, flexibility, stability, and communication. Cross-correlation analysis was performed to assess the system’s ability to provide early warning signal of new wave of infections. Results The pilot WWS system was a national surveillance system using existing wastewater infrastructures from the largest Norwegian municipalities. We found that the system was sensitive, timely, useful, representative, simple, flexible, acceptable, and stable to follow the general trend of infection. Preliminary results indicate that the system could provide an early signal of changes in variant distribution. However, challenges may arise with: (i) specificity due to temporary fluctuations of RNA levels in wastewater, (ii) representativeness when downscaling, and (iii) flexibility and acceptability when upscaling the system due to limited resources and/or capacity. Conclusions Our results showed that the pilot WWS system met most of its surveillance objectives. The system was able to provide an early warning signal of 1-2 weeks, and the system was useful to monitor infections at population level and complement routine surveillance when individual testing activity was low. However, temporary fluctuations of WWS values need to be carefully interpreted. To improve quality and efficiency, we recommend to standardise and validate methods for assessing trends of new waves of infection and variants, evaluate the WWS system using a longer operational period particularly for new variants, and conduct prevalence studies in the population to calibrate the system and improve data interpretation.

Optical backbone networks constitute the fundamental infrastructure employed today by network operators to deliver services to users. As network capacity is a key factor influencing optical network performance, it is important to understand how topological and physical properties impact its behavior and to have the capability to estimate its value. In this context, we propose here a method to evaluate the network capacity that relies on the optical reach to account for physical layer aspects in conjunction with constrained routing techniques for traffic routing. As this type of routing can lead to traffic blocking, particularly due to the limitation on the number of wavelengths per fiber, we also propose a fiber assignment algorithm designed to deal with this problem. We apply this method to a set of randomly generated networks using a modified Waxman model, and for a network with 60 nodes, in a scenario without blocking, we obtain capacities of about 2.5 Pbit/s for a symbol rate of 64 Gbaud and about 5 Pbit/s for a symbol rate of 128 Gbaud. Remarkably, this duplication in the total network capacity is achieved by an increase in the total fiber length of only about 51%.

Abstract Thailand is undergoing rapid intensification of livestock production where small subsistence farms and medium sized commercial farms coexist. In medium farms, antimicrobials are prescribed by a veterinarian, whereas in small farms antimicrobial use remains largely unsupervised. The impact of these differences as well as other farming practices on the emergence and composition of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) remains largely unknown. We analyzed 363 genomes of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase producing (ESBL) and/or AmpC producing Escherichia coli recovered from humans and pigs at small and medium farms from the Khon Kaen province, Thailand. We tested for genome-wide associations to identify links between ARGs, host, and farm size. Pig isolates from small farms were associated with mcr and qnr genes conferring resistance to colistin and fluoroquinolones, respectively. In contrast, pig isolates from medium farms were associated with ARGs conferring resistance to drugs commonly used on medium farms (i.e., streptomycin). ESBL plasmids from small farms co-carried ARGs conferring resistance to critically important antimicrobials more frequently compared to plasmid from medium farms. Frequent ARG combinations included bla CTX-M-55 + qnrS1 (29.8% vs 17.5% in small and medium farms, respectively), bla CTX-M-55 + qnrS1 + mcr-3.19 (5% vs 0%), bla CTX-M-14 + qnrS1 (9.3% vs 6.2%), and bla CTX-M-14 + qnrS1 + mcr-1.1 (3.1% vs 0%). The co-location on plasmids of ARGs conferring resistance to critically important antimicrobials as defined by the World Health Organization is concerning, and actions to curb their spread are urgently needed. Legislation on limiting antimicrobial sales and initiatives to better inform farmers and veterinarians on appropriate antimicrobial usage and farm biosecurity could help reduce antimicrobial use on farms.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable impact on the biopsychosocial elements of human beings, especially children and teenagers, as vulnerable groups. Social isolation can lead to psychiatric illness, obesity, and sleep disorders in adults. This study aimed to determine the impact of lockdown on children’s sleep, diet, physical activity, and behavior. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study conducted from May 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021. Data were collected from four healthcare centers in Cascais (Lisbon, Portugal) by administering a questionnaire in person and online. Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted using Microsoft Excel® and the SPSS® software (version 23). Results: In total, 790 responses were collected (median age 9 years old) without gender predominance. Family routine and behavioral changes were found in 84% and 63% of children, respectively. In addition, dietary changes were observed in 43% of them, with 62% reporting an increase in quantities and 23% reporting weight gain (more than 5 kg in 18%). Regarding physical activity, 44% exercised more than three times a week before the lockdown. Following COVID-19, 18% maintained this routine, and 48% quit sporting activities. Finally, sleep changes occurred in 42%, including nightmares and difficulty falling asleep. Discussion: Childhood and adolescence are periods of considerable social and psychomotor development, and any routine disruption can cause profound changes in personal and interpersonal experience during this period. The findings of this study revealed that lockdown caused changes in children’s behavior, diet, physical exercise, and sleep. It is essential to outline strategies to support children and teenagers with a multidisciplinary approach to reduce the effects of social isolation on their development.

Glycerin, a low-valued waste from biodiesel production, and dopamine were used as precursors for adsorbent materials. The study is centered on the preparation and application of microporous activated carbon as adsorbent materials in the separation of ethane/ethylene and of gases that are natural gas or landfill gas components (ethane/methane and carbon dioxide/methane). The activated carbons were produced by the following sequence reactions: facile carbonization of a glycerin/dopamine mixture and chemical activation. Dopamine allowed the introduction of nitrogenated groups that improved the selectivity of the separations. The activating agent was KOH, but its mass ratio was kept lower than one to improve the sustainability of the final materials. The solids were characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and point of zero charges (pHPZC). The order for adsorption of the different adsorbates (in mmolg−1) on the most well performing material—Gdop0.75—is methane (2.5) < carbon dioxide (5.0) < ethylene (8.6) < ethane (8.9).

Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to the health of humans and animals that requires global actions. In high-income countries, surveillance systems helped inform policies to curb AMR in animals. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), demand for meat is rising, and developing policies against AMR is urgent. However, surveillance of AMR is at best nascent, and the current evidence base to inform policymakers is geographically heterogeneous. We present resistancebank.org, an online platform that centralizes information on AMR in animals from 1,285 surveys from LMICs. Surveys were conducted between 2000 and 2019 and include 22,403 resistance rates for pathogens isolated from chickens, cattle, sheep, and pigs. The platform is built as a shiny application that provides access to individual surveys, country-level reports, and maps of AMR at 10 × 10 kilometers resolution. The platform is accessed via any internet browser and enables users to upload surveys to strengthen a global database. resistancebank.org aims to be a focal point for sharing AMR data in LMICs and to help international funders prioritize their actions.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) are especially known as toxic and polluting gases, yet they are also endogenously produced and play key roles in numerous biological processes. These two opposing aspects of the gases highlight the need for new types of materials to be developed in addition to the most common materials such as activated carbons and zeolites. Herein, a new imine-linked polymer organic framework was obtained using the inexpensive and easy-to-access reagents isophthalaldehyde and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine in good yield (64%) through the simple and catalyst-free Schiff-base reaction. The polymeric material has microporosity, an ABET surface area of 51 m2/g, and temperature stability up to 300 °C. The obtained 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine imine-linked polymer organic material has a higher capacity to adsorb NO (1.6 mmol/g) than H2S (0.97 mmol/g). Release studies in aqueous solution showed that H2S has a faster release (3 h) from the material than NO, for which a steady release was observed for at least 5 h. This result is the first evaluation of the possibility of an imine-linked polymer organic framework being used in the therapeutic release of NO or H2S.

ABSTRACT The number of bacterial genomes deposited each year in public databases is growing exponentially. However, efforts to use these genomes to track trends in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have been limited thus far. We used 22,102 genomes from public databases to track AMR trends in nontyphoidal Salmonella in food animals in the United States. In 2018, genomes deposited in public databases carried genes conferring resistance, on average, to 2.08 antimicrobial classes in poultry, 1.74 in bovines, and 1.28 in swine. This represents a decline in AMR of over 70% compared to the levels in 2000 in bovines and swine, and an increase of 13% for poultry. Trends in resistance inferred from genomic data showed good agreement with U.S. phenotypic surveillance data (weighted mean absolute difference ± standard deviation, 5.86% ± 8.11%). In 2018, resistance to 3rd-generation cephalosporins in bovines, swine, and poultry decreased to 9.97% on average, whereas in quinolones and 4th-generation cephalosporins, resistance increased to 12.53% and 3.87%, respectively. This was concomitant with a decrease of blaCMY-2 but an increase in blaCTX-M-65 and gyrA D87Y (encoding a change of D to Y at position 87). Core genome single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) phylogenies show that resistance to these antimicrobial classes was predominantly associated with Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis and, to a lesser extent, S. enterica serovar Typhimurium and its monophasic variant I 4,[5],12:i:−, whereas quinolone resistance was also associated with S. enterica serovar Dublin. Between 2000 and 2018, trends in serovar prevalence showed a composition shift where S. Typhimurium decreased while S. Infantis increased. Our findings illustrate the growing potential of using genomes in public databases to track AMR in regions where sequencing capacities are currently expanding. IMPORTANCE Next-generation sequencing has led to an exponential increase in the number of genomes deposited in public repositories. This growing volume of information presents opportunities to track the prevalence of genes conferring antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing threat to the health of humans and animals. Using 22,102 public genomes, we estimated that the prevalence of multidrug resistance (MDR) in the United States decreased in nontyphoidal Salmonella isolates recovered from bovines and swine between 2000 and 2018, whereas it increased in poultry. These trends are consistent with those detected by national surveillance systems that monitor resistance using phenotypic testing. However, using genomes, we identified that genes conferring resistance to critically important antimicrobials were associated with specific MDR serovars that could be the focus for future interventions. Our analysis illustrates the growing potential of public repositories to monitor AMR trends and shows that similar efforts could soon be carried out in other regions where genomic surveillance is increasing.

Abstract Jet production at hadron colliders is a benchmark process to probe the dynamics of the strong interaction and the structure of the colliding hadrons. One of the most basic jet production observables is the single jet inclusive cross section, which is obtained by summing all jets that are observed in an event. Our recent computation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD contributions to single jet inclusive observables uncovered large corrections in certain kinematical regions, which also resulted in a sizeable ambiguity on the appropriate choice of renormalization and factorization scales. We now perform a detailed investigation of the infrared sensitivity of the different ingredients to the single jet inclusive cross section. We show that the contribution from the second jet, ordered in transverse momentum p T, in the event is particularly sensitive to higher order effects due to implicit restrictions on its kinematics. By investigating the second-jet transverse momentum distribution, we identify large-scale cancellations between different kinematical event configurations, which are aggravated by certain types of scale choice. Taking perturbative convergence and stability as selection criteria enables us to single out the total partonic transverse energy Ĥ T and twice the individual jet transverse momentum 2 p T (with which Ĥ T coincides in Born kinematics) as the most appropriate scales in the perturbative description of single jet inclusive production.

The monolacunary Keggin-type [PW11O39]7− (PW11) heteropolyanion was immobilized on porous framework of mesoporous silicas, namely SBA-15 and an ethylene-bridged periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMOE). The supports were functionalized with a cationic group (N-trimethoxysilypropyl-N, N, N-trimethylammonium, TMA) for the successful anchoring of the anionic polyoxometalate. This work reviews the application of various standard isotherms to evaluate the micropore volume in a range of microporous materials. The selected materials have quite different surface chemistry, and are relevant due to their properties for adsorption and catalysis: zeolites, activated carbons, clay-based materials and MOFs. Some cases were analysed before and after being used as supports in the heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts. The discussion is centred, but not limited, to the three standard isotherms that are mostly employed in the literature (t-curve, non-porous carbon and non-porous hydroxylated silica) for the assessment of the micropore volume. For a given material the values of the micropore volumes from the different standard isotherms were compared, particularly against the values from the largely used t-curve. The cases where major discrepancies were found could normally be ascribed to samples that have a broad micropore size distribution.

The search for H2S donors has been increasing due to the multiple therapeutic effects of the gas. However, the use of nanoporous materials has not been investigated despite their potential. Zeolites and activated carbons are known as good gas adsorbents and their modification with chitosan may increase the material biocompatibility and simultaneously its release time in aqueous solution, thus making them good H2S donors. Herein, we modified with chitosan a series of A zeolites (3A, 4A and 5A) with different pore sizes and an activated carbon obtained from glycerin. The amount of H2S adsorbed was evaluated by a volumetric method and their release capacity in aqueous solution was measured. These studies aimed to verify which of the materials had appropriate H2S adsorption/release properties to be considered a potential H2S donor. Additionally, cytotoxicity assays using HeLa cells were performed. Considering the obtained results, the chitosan composite with the A zeolite with the larger pore opening was the most promising material to be used as a H2S donor so a further cytotoxicity assay using H2S loaded was conducted and no toxicity was observed.

BackgroundIn a previous report, a clinical ST131 Escherichia coli isolate (Ec-1),producing a plasmid-encoded AmpC β-lactamase CMY-2, evolved in vivo under cefepime (FEP) treatment to the FEP-resistant Ec-2 strain expressing an extended-spectrum β-lactamase CMY-33. To compare factors responsible for in vitro and in vivo FEP resistance, we reproduced in vitro FEP resistance evolution in Ec-1.MethodsFEP-resistant mutants were generated by subjecting Ec-1 (FEP MIC = 0.125 mg/L) to sub-inhibitory concentrations of FEP. MICs were obtained by broth microdilution or Etest. Strains were sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq platform. Transcriptional levels and plasmid copy numbers were determined by real-time PCR. Outer membrane proteins (OMPs) were extracted and separated by SDS-PAGE. Growth kinetics was evaluated by measuring OD450.ResultsThe CMY-2 expressed by Ec-1 evolved to a CMY-69 (strain EC-4) by an Ala294Pro substitution after 24 passages. After 30 passages, the FEP MIC increased to 256 mg/L (strain EC-32). SDS PAGE did not reveal any lack of OMPs in the mutant strains. However, blaCMY transcription levels were up to 14-times higher than in Ec-1, which was partially explained by mutations in the upstream region of repA resulting in a higher copy number of the blaCMY-harboring IncI1 plasmid. All mutants showed a slight growth defect but no significant difference in relative growth rates compared to Ec-1.ConclusionIn vitro sub-inhibitory concentrations of FEP resulted in the selection of resistance mutations altering the H-10 helix of the CMY-2 and increasing the plasmid copy number. Appropriate dosing strategies may help preventing resistance evolution during treatments.

The continuous petroleum-based plastics manufacturing generates disposal issues, spreading the problem of plastic pollution and its rise in the environment. Recently, innovative techniques and scientific research promoted biopolymers as the primary alternative for traditional plastics, raising and expanding global bioplastic production. Due to its unmatched biological and functional attributes, chitosan (Ch) has been substantially explored and employed as a biopolymeric matrix. Nevertheless, the hydrophilicity and the weak mechanical properties associated with this biopolymer represent a significant intrinsic restriction to its implementation into some commercial applications, namely, in food packaging industries. Distinct methodologies have been utilized to upgrade the mechanical and barrier properties of Ch, such as using organic or inorganic nanofillers, crosslinkers, or blends with other polymers. This review intends to analyze the most recent works that combine the action of different nanoparticle types with Ch films to reinforce their mechanical and barrier properties.

The development of solid materials that deliver nitric oxide (NO) are of interest for several therapeutic applications. Nevertheless, due to NO’s reactive nature, rapid diffusion and short half-life, reporting their NO delivery characteristics is rather complex. The full knowledge of this parameter is fundamental to discuss the therapeutic utility of these materials, and thus, the NO quantification strategy must be carefully considered according to the NO-releasing scaffold type, to the expected NO-releasing amounts and to the medium of quantification. In this work, we explore and discuss three different ways of quantifying the release of NO in different biological fluids: haemoglobin assay, Griess assay and NO electrochemical detection. For these measurements, different porous materials, namely zeolites and titanosilicates were used as models for NO-releasing platforms. The oxyhaemoglobin assay offers great sensitivity (nanomolar levels), but it is only possible to monitor the NO release while oxyhaemoglobin is not fully converted. On the other hand, Griess assay has low sensitivity in complex biological media, namely in blood, and interferences with media make NO measurements questionable. Nevertheless, this method can measure micromolar amounts of NO and may be useful for an initial screening for long-term release performance. The electrochemical sensor enabled real-time measurements in a variety of biological settings. However, measured NO is critically low in oxygenated and complex media, giving transient signals, which makes long-term quantification impossible. Despite the disadvantages of each method, the combination of all the results provided a more comprehensive NO release profile for these materials, which will help to determine which formulations are most promising for specific therapeutic applications. This study highlights the importance of using appropriate NO quantification tools to provide accurate reports.

Because of their practical applications, porous materials attract the attention of undergraduate students in a way that can be used to teach techniques and concepts in various chemistry disciplines. Porous materials are studied in various chemistry disciplines, including inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. In this work, the syntheses of a microporous material and a mesoporous material are presented. The porosity of the synthesized materials is characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. We show that this technique can be used to determine the pore dimensions of the synthesized materials.

Em Janeiro 2008, foi implementada, em Portugal, uma nova medida legislativa que condiciona o consumo de tabaco em espaços colectivos fechados. Como a exposição passiva ao fumo do tabaco provoca a exacerbação dos sintomas de asma, tornou-se pertinente conhecer a percepção dos doentes asmáticos sobre as repercussões desta nova lei no seu bem-estar. Foi realizado um estudo descritivo transversal, numa amostra de conveniência, constituída por 96 doentes asmáticos da consulta de Pneumologia do Hospital Pulido Valente e do Hospital de Santa Marta, de Lisboa. Os dados foram recolhidos a partir de um questionário padronizado com respostas voluntárias, anónimas e confidenciais. Para tratamento estatístico recorreu-se ao programa Epi InfoTM e foi aplicado o teste qui-quadrado para análise dos resultados (á=5%). Dos doentes inquiridos, a percentagem dos que estiveram expostos a fumo de tabaco até Dezembro 2007 foi de 67,7%, com maior prevalência no grupo de indivíduos activos. Apesar de a maioria dos inquiridos não referir alterações no seu bem-estar, 39,6% referiu alterações positivas (melhoria na realização de actividades diárias, diminuição dos sintomas ou menor necessidade de recorrer a medicação SOS). Destes indivíduos, que indicaram alterações positivas, 81,6% deixaram de estar expostos após entrada da nova lei e 65,8% indicaram-na como factor responsável. Os resultados deste estudo, apenas dois meses após a implementação legal, reforçam a importância da aplicação de medidas legais eficazes que evitem a exposição ao fumo de tabaco, como forma de redução da exacerbação dos sintomas e de melhoria do bem-estar dos doentes asmáticos.January 2008 saw new legislation implanted in Portugal restricting smoking in closed public spaces. As second-hand smoke worsens asthma symptoms, it is important to understand how asthma patients feel this new legislation impacts on their well-being. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a convenience sample formed of 96 asthma patients who had Pulmonology appointments at the Pulido Valente and Santa Marta Hospitals. All data was collected from a standardised questionnaire with volunteer, anonymous and confidential answers. Epi InfoTM software was used for statistical processing purposes, and the results analysed using the chi-squared test (á=5%). 67.7% of the patients polled were exposed to secondhand smoke until December 2007, with a higher percentage in those currently in work. A considerable percentage (39.6%) described positive changes (measured by improved performance of daily life activities, decrease in symptoms or lesser recourse to SOS medication), even though the majority did not recognise any improvement. 81.6% of those who noted positive changes said they were no longer exposed to second-hand smoke with the passing of the new legislation, and 65.8% stated that the smoking ban was the factor responsible for those changes. These results, only two months after the implementation of the legislative ban on smoking in public spaces, underline the importance of approving effective measures to create and enforce smoke-free environments, reducing worsening of symptoms and improving asthma patients’ well-being.

JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: A analgesia no pós-operatório é desejada pelos pacientes e tem sido praticada pela maioria dos anestesiologistas. Além dos opióides, os anestésicos locais têm sido utilizados nos bloqueios periféricos e centrais para se obter a analgesia pós-operatória. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar duas técnicas de bloqueio dos nervos intercostais para analgesia pós-operatória em colecistectomias abertas. MÉTODO: Sessenta pacientes foram submetidos a colecistectomias abertas com incisão subcostal e receberam bloqueio intercostal (Grupo IC, n=30) ou bloqueio interpleural (Grupo IP, n=30), ambos com 100 mg de bupivacaína a 0,5% com adrenalina, para analgesia pós-operatória. Foram avaliados os tempos de analgesia e as queixas relatadas pelos pacientes. RESULTADOS: A qualidade da analgesia foi considerada boa para ambas as técnicas. A duração média de analgesia foi de 505 minutos no grupo IP e 620 minutos no grupo IC, não havendo diferença estatística entre eles. Náuseas, vômitos e dor abdominal leve foram as queixas pós-operatórias mais freqüentes. Não se constatou qualquer complicação pós-operatória associada exclusivamente aos bloqueios, assim como não foi evidenciado nenhum caso de pneumotórax. CONCLUSÕES: Concluiu-se que as técnicas promoveram analgesia satisfatória após colecistectomia, sendo que o bloqueio interpleural apresentou maior facilidade de execução.

A recent pathway for obtaining regular mesoporous materials (silicas and carbons) in one step was explored in this work using TEOS, P123 and sucrose as a starting base template. The synthesis was catalyzed by H 2 SO 4 . The mesoporous carbon was obtained by carbonization of the previous mixture and the removal of the silica template. In contrast, when the composite mixture was heated in air, a mesoporous silica was obtained. The results showed that the “one-pot” method presented some difficulties in controlling the synthesis variables. All the silica samples presented a more regular pore-size distribution than the respective carbon replicate. The specific surface areas (A BET ) of the prepared materials were in the range 500–600 m 2 /g for the silica samples and within the range 1000–1200 m 2 /g for the carbon samples.
