Abstract In this study, we address the persistent challenge of providing adequate oxygen to transplanted cells by introducing a respiratoid biosystem. Central to our strategy is the chloroplast-transit-peptide (CTP), crucial for optimal oxygenation. Through conjugation of CTP with alginate, we achieve stabilization of chloroplast structure. Strategically anchored to the outer chloroplast membrane, CTP not only ensures structural integrity but also upregulates key photosynthesis-associated genes. This biosystem demonstrates exceptional efficacy in spontaneously generating oxygen, particularly under hypoxic conditions (~1% pO2). In an application, pancreatic islets encapsulated within the respiratoid biosystem and intraperitoneally implanted in diabetic mice maintain normal glucose levels effectively. Insulin secretion persists for 100 days post-xenotransplantation without the need for immunosuppressant administration, highlighting the reliance on the respiratoid biosystem’s oxygen supply and structural stability. Our study demonstrates the respiratoid biosystem as a platform in tissue engineering, offering a nature-inspired solution to the critical challenge of spontaneous oxygen supply.

BackgroundPreventative self-care can reduce dental disease that disproportionately burdens vulnerable populations. Personalized digital oral self-care behavioral interventions offer a promising solution. However, the success of these digital interventions depends on toothbrushing data collection e-platforms attuned to the needs and preferences of vulnerable communities. ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to assess the usability and feasibility of the Remote Oral Behaviors Assessment System (ROBAS), which has been adapted to address the unique requirements of socioeconomically disadvantaged minority individuals. MethodsA cohort of 53 community-clinic participants, including 31 (58%) Latino and 22 (42%) Black individuals with no prior experience using electric toothbrushes, were recruited to use ROBAS, with planned assessments at baseline, 2 months, and 4 months. Beyond evaluating ROBAS’s technical performance, extensive feedback was gathered to gauge users’ experiences, viewpoints, and overall contentment. The System Usability Scale (SUS) served as a primary metric for assessing user satisfaction and acceptability. ResultsROBAS exhibited largely reliable and consistent data-gathering capabilities. SUS scores (mean 75.6, SD 14.5) reflected participant contentment within a range of values for other commonly used digital devices and technologies. Among participants who answered questions about willingness to pay for ROBAS, 97% (30/31) indicated that they were willing to pay for ROBAS either as a one-time payment or as a subscription-based service. Additionally, 87.5% of participants expressed that they would endorse it to acquaintances. Most participants expressed no reservations about privacy; among those who expressed privacy concerns (n=20, 50%), the concerns included exposure of information (n=18, 45%), monitoring of brushing habits (n=12, 30%), and collection of information (n=14, 35%), although these concerns did not significantly correlate with specific participant traits. In qualitative terms, users valued ROBAS's ability to monitor brushing habits but called for refinements, especially in Wi-Fi and application connectivity. Recommendations for system improvements encompassed enhanced app functionality, individualized coaching, more comprehensive brushing data, and the addition of flossing activity tracking. ConclusionsThe research highlights ROBAS's promise as a digital platform for unobtrusively tracking daily oral self-care activities in marginalized communities. The system proved to be both feasible, as evidenced by its stable and accurate data capture of brushing behaviors, and user-friendly, as reflected by strong SUS scores and positive user feedback. Influential factors for its uptake included ease of learning and operation, and the feedback provided.

Abstract Human affects such as emotions, moods, feelings are increasingly being considered as key parameter to enhance the interaction of human with diverse machines and systems. However, their intrinsically abstract and ambiguous nature make it challenging to accurately extract and exploit the emotional information. Here, we develop a multi-modal human emotion recognition system which can efficiently utilize comprehensive emotional information by combining verbal and non-verbal expression data. This system is composed of personalized skin-integrated facial interface (PSiFI) system that is self-powered, facile, stretchable, transparent, featuring a first bidirectional triboelectric strain and vibration sensor enabling us to sense and combine the verbal and non-verbal expression data for the first time. It is fully integrated with a data processing circuit for wireless data transfer allowing real-time emotion recognition to be performed. With the help of machine learning, various human emotion recognition tasks are done accurately in real time even while wearing mask and demonstrated digital concierge application in VR environment.

This study examines the parts of the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna (AFM) quoted in the Huayanjing tanxuanji (Tanxuanji) and sheds light on how Fazang, as a Huayan master, understood and utilized the AFM in the Tanxuanji. In the Tanxuanji, the AFM is quoted 36 times, and the arousal of the thought of enlightenment is most frequently mentioned. Therefore, this study focuses on the arousal of the thought of enlightenment and reveals Fazang’s unique understanding of this concept within Huayan thought. First, Fazang understood the stage of the aspiration to awakening through the perfection of faith as corresponding to the first abode. Second, Fazang explains several chapters of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra beyond the first stage of abode in the Tanxuanji by quoting the aspiration to awakening through the perfection of faith, which stems from his theory of becoming buddha by the completion of faith. Third, while Fazang categorized the AFM within the final teaching in terms of its concept of arousal of the thought of enlightenment, he may have recognized the AFM as aligning with either the same teaching of the one vehicle or the distinct teaching of the one vehicle. Fourth, Fazang’s view on the arousal of the thought of enlightenment in the Tanxuanji reflects his distinctive perspective evident in the Fazangshu. This understanding of Fazang explains why the arousal of the thought of enlightenment was quoted most frequently in the Tanxuanji.

Abstract Soft inflatable robots are a promising paradigm for applications that benefit from their inherent safety and adaptability. However, for perception, complex connections of rigid electronics both in hardware and software remain the mainstay. Although recent efforts have created soft analogs of individual rigid components, the integration of sensing and control systems is challenging to achieve without compromising the complete softness, form factor, or capabilities. Here, we report a soft self-sensing tensile valve that integrates the functional capabilities of sensors and control valves to directly transform applied tensile strain into distinctive steady-state output pressure states using only a single, constant pressure source. By harnessing a unique mechanism, “helical pinching”, we derive physical sharing of both sensing and control valve structures, achieving all-in-one integration in a compact form factor. We demonstrate programmability and applicability of our platform, illustrating a pathway towards fully soft, electronics-free, untethered, and autonomous robotic systems.

Abstract Pen-drawing is an intuitive, convenient, and creative fabrication method for delivering emergent and adaptive design to real devices. To demonstrate the application of pen-drawing to robot construction, we developed pen-drawn Marangoni swimmers that perform complex programmed tasks using a simple and accessible manufacturing process. By simply drawing on substrates using ink-based Marangoni fuel, the swimmers demonstrate advanced robotic motions such as polygon and star-shaped trajectories, and navigate through maze. The versatility of pen-drawing allows the integration of the swimmers with time-varying substrates, enabling multi-step motion tasks such as cargo delivery and return to the original place. We believe that our pen-based approach will significantly expand the potential applications of miniaturized swimming robots and provide new opportunities for simple robotic implementations.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the measurable impact of Buddhist liberal arts courses on college students’ ability to engage in self-reflection. This study uses the data gathered to establish, through statistical analysis, any correlations between two variables—Buddhist liberal arts as courses as the independent variable and self-reflection intelligence as the continuous dependent variable. First, the following results of the study show that the mean of the four self-reflection sub-categories for the students who found that the courses were helpful was higher than that of the students who found that they were not helpful: self-awareness (4.10 ± 0.49 > 3.90 ± 0.87), self-design (3.84 ± 0.66 > 3.40 ± 0.97), self-regulation (4.01 ± 0.04 > 3.48 ± 0.18), and self-examination (4.21 ± 0.03 > 3.94 ± 0.15), respectively. Second, the mean of the four self-reflection sub-categories for students who experienced a positive change of their perception in the courses was higher than that of students who experienced a negative change, as follows: self-awareness (4.08 ± 0.50 > 3.75 ± 0.82), self-design (3.84 ± 0.68 > 3.51 ± 0.93), self-regulation (4.00 ± 0.59 > 3.56 ± 0.67), and self-examination (4.17 ± 0.49 > 4.04 ± 0.73), respectively. This study illuminates the role of Buddhist-related liberal arts courses in higher education, specifically in fostering students’ self-reflection skills. It offers valuable insights into educational practices aimed at enhancing self-reflection levels.

Highlights Research progress on inorganic perovskites quantum dots is reviewed from three aspects: physical properties, synthesis approaches, and electronic applications. Inorganic perovskite quantum dots have been exploited as either the active layers or the additives in high-performance transistors and memories. Challenges and outlook on future advancement of perovskites quantum dots-based electronics are elaborated.

Wetlands possess significant ecological value and play a crucial role in the environment. Recent advancements in remote exploration technology have enabled a quantitative analysis of wetlands through surveys on the type of cover present. However, the classification of complex cover types as land cover types in wetlands remains challenging, leading to ongoing studies aimed at addressing this issue. With the advent of high-resolution sensors in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), researchers can now obtain detailed data and utilize them for their investigations. In this paper, we sought to establish an effective method for classifying centimeter-scale images using multispectral and hyperspectral techniques. Since there are numerous classes of land cover types, it is important to build and extract effective training data for each type. In addition, computer vision-based methods, especially those that combine deep learning and machine learning, are attracting considerable attention as high-accuracy methods. Collecting training data before classifying by cover type is an important factor that which requires effective data sampling. To obtain accurate detection results, a few data sampling techniques must be tested. In this study, we employed two data sampling methods (endmember and pixel sampling) to acquire data, after which their accuracy and detection outcomes were compared through classification using spectral angle mapper (SAM), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN) approaches. Our findings confirmed the effectiveness of the pixel-based sampling method, demonstrating a notable difference of 38.62% compared to the endmember sampling method. Moreover, among the classification methods employed, the SAM technique exhibited the highest effectiveness, with approximately 10% disparity observed in multispectral data and 7.15% in hyperspectral data compared to the other models. Our findings provide insights into the accuracy and classification outcomes of different models based on the sampling method employed in spectral imagery.

This study aims to reveal the influence of Wŏnhyo’s Kisillon so (Wŏnhyoso) on Chinese commentaries on the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna (AFM), which is regarded as important in East Asian Buddhism. Previous studies focused only on the influence on Fazang’s Qixinlun shu (Fazangshu), but it should be noted that the Wŏnhyoso also had an effect on the understanding of the AFM in China. First, by comparing the usage of “shenjie” in the Fazangshu and in the Wŏnhyoso, one can identify Wŏnhyoso’s unique interpretation. The Wŏnhyoso defines it as “mystical understanding as the nature of One Mind in the aspect of thusness and the nature of the mind of original enlightenment in the aspect of arising and ceasing”, whereas the Fazangshu defines “shenjie” as “an excellent comprehension”. Next, examining the usage of “shenjie” of the Wŏnhyoso in the later commentaries on the AFM after Fazang, such as the Shilun, the Zanxuanshu, the Puguanji, the Zongmishu, the Bixueji, the Shulue, and the Huiyue, has confirmed the influence of the Wŏnhyoso in Chinese Buddhism. In addition, the relationships between Chinese commentaries on the AFM were also clarified based on the commentaries’ acceptance of “shenjie”.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection of healthcare workers (HCWs) occasionally occurs via acquisition from their colleagues. Data regarding the infection rates of HCWs with close contact and non–close contacts of HCWs are limited. In addition, the protective effect of COVID-19 vaccination against transmission between HCWs is unknown. We evaluated the infection rates of HCWs with close contact and non–close contact of infected HCWs and the effect of COVID-19 vaccination on transmission among HCWs in a tertiary-care hospital in South Korea. Methods: This study was performed in a tertiary-care hospital in Korea. We analyzed the COVID-19 cases and contacts among HCWs from January to December 2021. We reviewed the vaccination status of confirmed and exposed HCWs, the type of vaccination, and the infection rate according to the contact. We performed subgroup analyses in individuals who had been diagnosed since July 2021 when the δ (delta) variant became the dominant strain in South Korea. Transmission was defined based on their spatiotemporal epidemiologic association. Results: During the study period, 173 HCWs had COVID-19, and 2,693 HCWs were exposed to them. Among them, 18 (1.52%) of 1,186 close contacts and 13 (0.86%) of 1,507 non–close contacts had a positive SARS-CoV-2 test (P = .11). When the index cases had been fully vaccinated, the infection rate of close contacts was 0.85% (7 of 820), whereas the infection rate of close contacts was 3.01% (11 of 366) when the index had not been fully vaccinated (P = .005). However, the infection rate of non–close contacts was not different according to the vaccination status of index (0.83% vs 0.89%; P = .90). During the period of δ (delta) variant being dominant, the infection rate of close contacts was significantly lower when the index case had been fully vaccinated index than in cases with a non–fully vaccinated index case (0.85% vs 5.88%; P < .001). Conclusions: Transmission to colleagues was significantly lower from vaccinated HCWs than from nonvaccinated HCWs, and this finding was more significant in the era of the δ (delta) variant. Our findings support the importance of vaccination in HCWs.

Perovskite quantum dots film has better mechanical stability and structural integrity compared to bulk thin film. Here, the authors demonstrate higher endurance of quantum dot films and develop hybrid CsPbI3 QD/PCBM device with PCE of 15.1% and 12.3% on rigid and flexible substrates, respectively.

Abstract The surface chemistry of colloidal quantum dots (CQD) play a crucial role in fabricating highly efficient and stable solar cells. However, as‐synthesized PbS CQDs are significantly off‐stoichiometric and contain inhomogeneously distributed S and Pb atoms at the surface, which results in undercharged Pb atoms, dangling bonds of S atoms and uncapped sites, thus causing surface trap states. Moreover, conventional ligand exchange processes cannot efficiently eliminate these undesired atom configurations and defect sites. Here, potassium triiodide (KI3) additives are combined with conventional PbX2 matrix ligands to simultaneously eliminate the undercharged Pb species and dangling S sites via reacting with molecular I2 generated from the reversible reaction KI3 ⇌ I2 + KI. Meanwhile, high surface coverage shells on PbS CQDs are built via PbX2 and KI ligands. The implementation of KI3 additives remarkably suppresses the surface trap states and enhances the device stability due to the surface chemistry optimization. The resultant solar cells achieve the best power convention efficiency of 12.1% and retain 94% of its initial efficiency under 20 h continuous operation in air, while the control devices with KI additive deliver an efficiency of 11.0% and retains 87% of their initial efficiency under the same conditions.

This study investigated the effects of the casein to whey proteins (CW) ratio in milk on body composition, muscle strength, and endurance exercise capacity in rats. Thirty rats were assigned into five groups, and each treatment was administered for eight weeks: (1) control (isocaloric lactose supplementation), (2) CW8:2 (regular milk), (3) CW6:4, (4) CW5:5, and (5) nitrogen-free (lactose). The milk concentration was converted from a human equivalent dose (400 mL/60 kg body weight/day). All the milk-administered groups showed significantly greater growth performance, including body weight and weight gain compared to the isocaloric lactose control (p < 0.05). However, different CW ratios in milk had no effect on growth performance. Additionally, body composition, i.e., lean body mass and adiposity, was not affected by the CW ratio. Interestingly, CW6:4 and CW5:5 had significantly higher plasma branched-chain amino acids concentrations than control and CW8:2 (p < 0.05). In addition, CW5:5 showed significantly increased grip strength by 12–24% and time to exhaustion by 8–62% compared to the other groups (p < 0.05), indicating that the higher whey proteins ratio improved physical performance. We concluded that whey proteins-fortified milk enhances muscle strength and endurance exercise capacity without altering lean mass in rats.

The need for high-throughput screening has led to the miniaturization of the reaction volume of the chamber in bioassays. As the reactor gets smaller, surface tension dominates the gravitational or inertial force, and mixing efficiency decreases in small-scale reactions. Because passive mixing by simple diffusion in tens of microliter-scale volumes takes a long time, active mixing is needed. Here, we report an efficient micromixing method using magnetically rotating microparticles with patterned magnetization induced by magnetic nanoparticle chains. Because the microparticles have magnetization patterning due to fabrication with magnetic nanoparticle chains, the microparticles can rotate along the external rotating magnetic field, causing micromixing. We validated the reaction efficiency by comparing this micromixing method with other mixing methods such as simple diffusion and the use of a rocking shaker at various working volumes. This method has the potential to be widely utilized in suspension assay technology as an efficient mixing strategy.

Objectives: To find out from an analysis of empirical data the levels of influence, which a labor union (LU) and Occupational Safety and Health Committee (OSHC) have in reducing the occupational injury and illness rate (OIIR) through their accident prevention activities in manufacturing industries with five or more employees. Methods: The empirical data used in this study are the Occupational Safety and Health Tendency survey data, Occupational Accident Compensation data and labor productivity and sales data for the years 2003 to 2007. By matching these three sources of data, a final data set (n = 280) was developed and analyzed using SPSS version 18 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: It was found that a workplace with a LU has a lower OIIR than one without a LU. In manufacturing industries with five or more employees in 2007, the OIIR of the workplaces without a LU was 0.87%, while that of workplaces with a LU was much lower at 0.45%. In addition, workplaces with an established OSHC had a lower OIIR than those without an OSHC. Conclusion: It was found that the OIIR of workplaces with a LU is lower than those without a LU. Moreover, those with the OSHC usually had a lower OIIR than those without. The workplace OIIR may have an impact on management performance because the rate is negatively correlated with labor productivity and sales. In the long run, the OIIR of workplaces will be reduced when workers and employers join forces and recognize that the safety and health activities of the workplace are necessary, not only for securing the health rights of the workers, but also for raising labor productivity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among older Korean Chinese with hypertension—one of the most underserved and understudied ethnic minority groups in China. In addition, factors underlying the risk of CVD were examined. Methods: A total of 334 participants were recruited at the Community Health Service Center in Yanji, China. Data regarding socioeconomic, health-related, psychosocial, and other CVD risk factors were collected between June and October 2009. In this cross-sectional study, factors related to the risk of CVD were assessed by multivariate logistic regression; the Framingham Risk Score was used to measure the risk of CVD. Results: The prevalence of dyslipidemia, diabetes, and current smoking were 75.4%, 6.6%, and 23.1% respectively. Participants who lived alone were twice as likely to have a high risk of CVD (10-year risk of CVD ≥15%; odds ratio [OR], 2.00; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13–3.54). Those with a higher education level and greater knowledge about hypertension were at 57% and 62% reduced risk for CVD (OR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.21–0.92 and OR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.15–0.95, respectively). Conclusion: Future intervention should include strategies to addressing social isolation and also focus on older Korean Chinese with low education. Knowledge enhancement program is warranted for the prevention of CVD in this population.
