Background and aimsThe association between blood pressure (BP) and dementia in older adults remains unclear, prompting this study to investigate the relationship between various BP indicators and dementia in this population.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2019, including 3,599 participants aged 65 years or older. The basic demographic characteristics of participants were collected. BP measurements and neuropsychological assessments were performed. From the systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) values, mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse pressure (PP) and blood pressure index (BPI) were calculated. Generalized additive models and logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between BP indicators and dementia.ResultsGeneralized additive models identified a U-shaped relationship between DBP and dementia, which was more significant in males and people 70 years of age and older. Abstract Background Observational studies have shown that smoking is related to the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) in individuals with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Nevertheless, further investigation is needed to determine the causal effect between these two variables. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the causal relationship between smoking and DLCO in IPF patients using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets from individuals of European descent were analysed. These datasets included published lifetime smoking index (LSI) data for 462,690 participants and DLCO data for 975 IPF patients. The inverse-variance weighting (IVW) method was the main method used in our analysis. Sensitivity analyses were performed by MR‒Egger regression, Cochran’s Q test, the leave-one-out test and the MR-PRESSO global test. Results A genetically predicted increase in LSI was associated with a decrease in DLCO in IPF patients [ORIVW = 0.54; 95% CI 0.32–0.93; P = 0.02]. Conclusions Our study suggested that smoking is associated with a decrease in DLCO. Patients diagnosed with IPF should adopt an active and healthy lifestyle, especially by quitting smoking, which may be effective at slowing the progression of IPF.

Abstract Divalent lanthanide inorganic compounds can exhibit unique electronic configurations and physicochemical properties, yet their synthesis remains a great challenge because of the weak chemical stability. To the best of our knowledge, although several lanthanide monoxides epitaxial thin films have been reported, there is no chemically stable crystalline divalent lanthanide chalcogenide synthesized up to now. Herein, by using octahedra coupling tetrahedra single/double chains to construct an octahedral crystal field, we synthesized the stable crystalline La(II)-chalcogenide, LaMg6Ga6S16. The nature of the divalent La2+ cations can be identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure and electron paramagnetic resonance, while the stability is confirmed by the differential thermal scanning, in-situ variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and a series of solid-state reactions. Owing to the particular electronic characteristics of La2+(5d 1 ), LaMg6Ga6S16 displays an ultrabroad-band green emission at 500 nm, which is the inaugural instance of La(II)-based compounds demonstrating luminescent properties. Furthermore, as LaMg6Ga6S16 crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group, P−6, it is the second-harmonic generation (SHG) active, possessing a comparable SHG response with classical AgGaS2. In consideration of its wider band gap (E g = 3.0 eV) and higher laser-induced damage threshold (5×AgGaS2), LaMg6Ga6S16 is also a promising nonlinear optical material.

In the mining industry, lithological identification is crucial for ensuring the safety of equipment and personnel, as well as for improving production efficiency. Traditional ore identification methods, such as visual inspection, physical testing, and chemical analysis, have many limitations in terms of their operational complexity and applicability. Modern ore identification technologies, especially those combined with deep learning methods, can effectively overcome these shortcomings and significantly enhance identification performance. However, mainstream deep learning object detection algorithms still face the issues of low accuracy and poor identification performance in challenging mining conditions. To handle these problems, an improved Faster R-CNN model is proposed in this study. Specifically, we replace the backbone network ResNet with Res2Net-50 and incorporate an improved Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) to enhance feature fusion, thereby further improving the model’s feature extraction capability. Region of Interest(ROI) Align replaces the ROI pooling layer to solve the spatial misalignment issue, providing a higher detection accuracy in tasks involving small object detection and precise boundary detection. Additionally, the backbone feature extraction network integrates an efficient channel attention (ECA) module to optimize high-resolution semantic information maps. By adding simulated noise, the model’s robustness and anti-interference capabilities are enhanced. Soft-NMS is used instead of traditional NMS, preserving more potential targets through a confidence decay mechanism, thereby improving the detection accuracy and robustness. The experimental results show that the improved Faster R-CNN model maintains efficient and accurate ore identification capabilities even in complex mining environments, demonstrating its great potential in practical applications. The model achieves significant improvements in detection accuracy and efficiency, providing strong support for the intelligent and automated identification of ores.

Abstract Chirality and polarity are the two most important and representative symmetry‐dependent properties. For polar structures, all the twofold axes perpendicular to the principal axis of symmetry should be removed. For chiral structures, all the mirror‐related symmetries and inversion axes should be removed. Especially for duality (polarity and chirality), all of the above symmetries should be broken and that also represents the highest‐level challenge. Herein, a new symmetry‐breaking strategy that employs heteroanionic groups to construct hourglass‐like [Sr3OGeS3]2+ and [Sr3SGeS3]2+ groups to design and synthesize a new oxychalcogenide Sr18Ge9O5S31 with chiral‐polar duality is proposed. The presence of two enantiomers of Sr18Ge9O5S31 is confirmed by the single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Its optical activity and ferroelectricity are also studied by solid‐state circular dichroism spectroscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy, respectively. Further property measurements show that Sr18Ge9O5S31 possesses excellent nonlinear optical properties, including the strong second harmonic generation efficiency (≈2.5 × AGS), large bandgap (3.61 eV), and wide mid‐infrared transparent region (≈15.3 µm). These indicate that the unique microstructure groups of heteroanionic materials are conducive to realizing symmetry‐breaking and are able to provide some inspiration for exploring the chiral‐polar duality materials.

Electro-optic (EO) crystals are important material for all-solid-state laser technology, which can be used to fabricate various laser modulators, such as EO switches, laser deflectors, and optical waveguide. The improvements in new high-efficiency EO crystal materials have held great significance to the development of laser technology. Potassium tantalate niobate (KTN) is a popular multifunctional crystal because of its remarkable and excellent quadratic EO effect. KTN EO modulation technology offers numerous advantages, such as high efficiency, good stability, a quick response time, and inertia-free characteristics. In this paper, we summarize the research progress of KTN series crystals systemically, including the theoretical exploration on quadratic EO effect, solid-melt crystal growth technique, comprehensive physical characterization, new physical effect and mechanisms exploration, new EO devices development and design. The EO modulation technique based on the Kerr effect of KTN series crystal offers obvious advantages in reducing the drive voltage and device size, which could better meet the developmental needs of future lasers with a wide wavelength, miniaturization, and integration. This may provide theoretical guidance and an experimental basis for the design and development of new EO crystal devices and promote the development of laser technology.

Naturalistic driving studies (NDS) are an increasingly popular method to research driving behavior. They often result in large amounts of data varying in source and format (videos, spatial, and time-series data). Traditional data processing systems and analytical methods are not equipped to handle the large influx of data, often ranging from terabytes to petabytes. Previously, big data analytics platforms have been designed to address specific use cases of intelligent transport systems such as traffic flow prediction, transportation planning, and traffic safety. Similarly, there is a need for robust data systems for storing, mining, visualizing, and analyzing big naturalistic data. This paper presents a comprehensive cloud-based AI platform, Deep Insight, designed for data management, modeling, and enhanced annotations of naturalistic driving data. The platform capitalizes on Amazon Web Services, hosting a repository of public and privately collected NDS datasets with tool integration for data annotation and machine learning modeling that permits data analysis and inference. This end-to-end framework provides effective and reliable tools for storing, processing, annotating, and modeling NDS datasets. Additionally, the platform hosts a metric dashboard for benchmarking and displaying the performance of diverse analytical models using a standard dataset. The authors present a case study classifying a driver's head movement to demonstrate this framework’s workflow using Deep Insight and integrated tools. This cloud-based platform offers a wide range of cost, access, scalability, and security benefits, supporting goals to create a one-stop, standardized destination for analyzing naturalistic driving data and studying driver behavior.

Abstract Large-scale ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are increasingly used for space heating and cooling. In comparison with smaller ones, large GSHP systems are often coupled with much more borehole heat exchangers (BHEs). Because of the intense thermal interactions between BHEs, they are more susceptible to significant ground temperature changes. Meanwhile, they possess the advantage that their operational strategies can be applied with a high degree of freedom, which presents chances to alleviate intense thermal interactions. In this study, we used a new performance indicator to access the effectiveness of GSHP operational strategies on alleviating thermal anomalies. The Daxing Airport GSHP system, contains 10,497 BHEs and is the largest in the world; therefore, it was selected as the test case for performance enhancement through operational strategies. We established a 2D model to predict ground temperature changes during the 50-year operation of the BHEs. First, it was revealed that the most severe thermal anomalies in the study area mainly occurred both within and between the BHE arrays, which should be mitigated. To alleviate the thermal anomalies caused by the thermal interactions of BHEs, operational strategies were applied by adjusting the cooling/heating starting sequence, setting time-dependent thermal loads, and reallocating thermal loads according to the position of the BHEs. Our study demonstrates that only the operation strategy that adjusts the cooling/heating starting sequence is beneficial for different BHE layouts, while the operational strategy that reallocates the thermal loads depending on BHEs position may be only effective for specific BHE layouts. In addition, our new performance indicator can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the operational strategies and determine the spacing of adjacent BHE arrays. Therefore, it benefits the operation management of BHE array and design of BHE layout, and further guarantees the sustainable operation of the GSHP system.

Abstract Rice false smut, caused by Ustilaginoidea virens, is one of the most important diseases in rice. The disease not only causes significant yield losses in China and worldwide but also produces multiple types of mycotoxins that pose a serious threat to the health of humans and animals. To effectively prevent and control the disease, the pathogenicity mechanisms of U. virens have been studied preliminarily, and some control strategies have been developed. This review focuses on recent progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms of U. virens pathogenicity, including virulence-related genes, transcriptional regulation of virulence genes, and effector-mediated interactions between rice and U. virens. Based on the molecular mechanisms underlying the rice-U. virens interactions, the possibilities of the pathogenicity genes in U. virens and host immune-related genes as potential targets for biological agents, host-induced gene silencing, and molecular design breeding are also discussed.

To examine the flexural toughness characteristics of textile-reinforced lightweight aggregate concrete (TRLC), a four-point bending test was conducted to assess the impact of varying numbers of textile layers and the inclusion of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose on the ultimate load-bearing capacity and deformation capacity of TRLC thin plates. Six groups of specimens were prepared for the experiment, and the bending capacity of the thin plates in each group was evaluated. The flexural toughness index was utilized to quantify the bending performance of TRLC thin plates. The findings revealed that increasing the number of textile layers improved the initial cracking load, initial cracking deflection, ultimate load, ductility, and flexural toughness of the thin plates. For the specimens without HPMC, the initial cracking load was increased by up to 36.1%, the ultimate load by up to 40.9%, and the flexural toughness index by up to 292% as the number of textile layers was increased. For specimens doped with HPMC, the initial cracking load was increased by up to 61.7%, the ultimate load by up to 246.7%, and the flexural toughness index by up to 65%. The TRLC thin plate containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose exhibited a reduced initial cracking load yet displayed a stronger matrix consistency and good flexural toughness. Moreover, the enhancement in the ultimate load of TRLC thin plates with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose was more pronounced with an increased number of textile layers, resulting in a significantly higher number of cracks compared to TRLC without hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and an 11.40-fold increase in the flexural toughness index.

Three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene-based materials have displayed attractive electrochemical catalysis and sensing performances, benefiting from their high porosity, large surface area, and excellent electrical conductivity. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on 3D porous reduced graphene (3DPrGO) and ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) was developed for trace cadmium ion (Cd(II)) detection in water. The 3DPrGO was synthesized in situ at a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface using a polystyrene (PS) colloidal crystal template and the electrodeposition method. Then, IIP film was further modified on the 3DPrGO by electropolymerization to make it suitable for detecting Cd(II). Attributable to the abundant nanopores and good electron transport of the 3DPrGO, as well as the specific recognition for Cd(II) of IIP, a sensitive determination of trace Cd(II) at PoPD-IIP/3DPrGO/GCE was achieved. The proposed sensor exhibited comprehensive linear Cd(II) responses ranging from 1 to 100 μg/L (R2 = 99.7%). The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.11 μg/L, about 30 times lower than the drinking water standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, PoPD-IIP/3DPrGO/GCE was applied for the detection of Cd(II) in actual water samples. The satisfying recoveries (97–99.6%) and relative standard deviations (RSD, 3.5–5.7%) make the proposed sensor a promising candidate for rapid and on-site water monitoring.

A K–Rb–83Kr-based atomic comagnetometer for performing movement-related Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is theoretically studied in this paper. Parameters such as the spin-exchange rates, the spin-dephasing rates and the polarization of the nuclear spins are studied to configure the comagnetometer. The results show that the nuclear spin can generate a magnetic field of around 700 nT, at which the nuclear spin can compensate for a wide range of magnetic fields. In this paper, we also show the fabrication process for hybrid optical-pumping vapor cells, whereby alkali metals are mixed in a glove box that is then connected to the alkali vapor-cell fabrication system.

Abstract Background Ubiquitination is essential for many cellular processes in eukaryotes, including 26S proteasome-dependent protein degradation, cell cycle progression, transcriptional regulation, and signal transduction. Although numerous ubiquitinated proteins have been empirically identified, their cognate ubiquitin E3 ligases remain largely unknown. Results Here, we generate a complete ubiquitin E3 ligase-encoding open reading frames (UbE3-ORFeome) library containing 98.94% of the 1515 E3 ligase genes in the rice (Oryza sativa L.) genome. In the test screens with four known ubiquitinated proteins, we identify both known and new E3s. The interaction and degradation between several E3s and their substrates are confirmed in vitro and in vivo. In addition, we identify the F-box E3 ligase OsFBK16 as a hub-interacting protein of the phenylalanine ammonia lyase family OsPAL1–OsPAL7. We demonstrate that OsFBK16 promotes the degradation of OsPAL1, OsPAL5, and OsPAL6. Remarkably, we find that overexpression of OsPAL1 or OsPAL6 as well as loss-of-function of OsFBK16 in rice displayed enhanced blast resistance, indicating that OsFBK16 degrades OsPALs to negatively regulate rice immunity. Conclusions The rice UbE3-ORFeome is the first complete E3 ligase library in plants and represents a powerful proteomic resource for rapid identification of the cognate E3 ligases of ubiquitinated proteins and establishment of functional E3–substrate interactome in plants.

Abstract Focusing on circular rib-stiffened flange connections with inner and outer flange plates, termed inner-outer flange, the mechanical behavior of the flange subjected to the combined bending and tensile loading is experimentally studied. Four nominally identical specimens were utilized to investigate the effects of the eccentricity on the mechanical behavior. The distribution of the gap between flange plates, as well as the distribution of the bolt forces, is presented. It is found that the neutral axis would gradually approach the central axis of the flange connection, as the eccentricity increases. Moreover, provided the sufficiently strong ribs, welds, and flange plates, the capacity of the flange is found to be mainly predominated by the bolt strength. A good agreement is found in the comparison of the results obtained via the finite element analysis, the semi-analytic method (SAM) and the experimental study. It corroborates the validity of using the bolt failure assumption and the plane cross-section assumption in the SAM for approximating the capacity of the inner-outer flange. In terms of the interaction of the tensile capacity with the bending capacity, the experimental results along with those in the literature are compared with the curves defined by the codes, and suggestions for design are concluded. Yield capacity, defined as the load when the bolt stress reaches the yield strength, is recommended herein for the design of a structure under in-service condition. It is found the specifications in the current codes for the rib-stiffened flanges with a single flange plate would occasionally overestimate the yield capacity of the inner-outer flanges under the combined bending and tensile loading. Moreover, both the experimental and the numerical results show a linear load interaction curve, in terms of the ultimate capacity.

Abstract Oxychalcogenides capable of exhibiting excellent balance among large second‐harmonic generation (SHG) response, wide band gap (Eg), and suitable birefringence (Δn) are ideal materials class for infrared nonlinear optical (IR NLO) crystals. However, rationally designing a new high‐performance oxychalcogenide IR NLO crystal still faces a huge challenge because it requires the optimal orientations of the heteroanionic groups in oxychalcogenide. Herein, a series of antiperovskite‐type oxychalcogenides, Ae3Q[GeOQ3] (Ae = Ba, Sr; Q = S, Se), which were synthesized by employing the antiperovskite‐type Ba3S[GeS4] as the structure template. Their structures feature novel three‐dimensinoal frameworks constructed by distorted [QAe6] octahedra, which are further filled by [GeOQ3] tetrahedra to form antiperovskite‐type structures. Based on the unique antiperovskite‐type structures, the favorable alignment of the polarizable [GeOQ3] tetrahedra and distorted [QAe6] octahedra have been achieved. These contribute the ideal combination of large SHG response (0.7–1.5 times that of AgGaS2), wide Eg (3.52–4.10 eV), and appropriate Δn (0.017–0.035) in Ae3Q[GeOQ3]. Theoretical calculations and crystal structure analyses revealed that the strong SHG and wide Eg could be attributed to the polarizable [GeOQ3] tetrahedra and distorted [QAe6] octahedra. This research provides a new exemplification for the design of high‐performance IR NLO materials.

This article presents a synthetic distracted driving (SynDD1) dataset for machine learning models to detect and analyze drivers' various distracted behavior and different gaze zones. We collected the data in a stationary vehicle using three in-vehicle cameras positioned at locations: on the dashboard, near the rearview mirror, and on the top right-side window corner. The dataset contains two activity types: distracted activities [1–3], and gaze zones [4–6] for each participant and each activity type has two sets: without appearance blocks and with appearance blocks, such as wearing a hat or sunglasses. The order and duration of each activity for each participant are random. In addition, the dataset contains manual annotations for each activity, having its start and end time annotated. Researchers could use this dataset to evaluate the performance of machine learning algorithms for the classification of various distracting activities and gaze zones of drivers.

Abstract In this work, we synthesized an ionic liquid (IL)—(Dimethylamino)ethyl Methacrylate maleate ([DMAEMA]MA) as the crosslinker, through one-pot to synthesized hydrogels with high adsorption capacity for dye in water. Both anionic dyes (methylene blue, rhodamine B) and cationic dyes (congo red, eosin B) could be adsorbed by this type of hydrogel with different adsorption mechanism, and its adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RHB), congo red (CR), eosin B (EB) were 489.1, 463.2, 465.5 and 462 mg/g (amount of dye adsorbed per gram of hydrogel), respectively. The surface structure of the hydrogel before and after adsorption was observed and compared by scanning electron microscope (SEM). After studying the adsorption isotherms of the hydrogel adsorbent, it was found that the hydrogel adsorbent had two adsorption mechanisms. This was not found in reported literatures previously.

The miniaturization of quantum sensors is a popular trend for the development of quantum technology. One of the key components of these sensors is a coil which is used for spin modulation and manipulation. The bi-planar coils have the advantage of producing three-dimensional magnetic fields with only two planes of current confinement, whereas the traditional Helmholtz coils require three-dimensional current distribution. Thus, the bi-planar coils are compatible with the current micro-fabrication process and are quite suitable for the compact design of the chip-scale atomic devices that require stable or modulated magnetic fields. This paper presents a design of a miniature bi-planar coil. Both the magnetic fields produced by the coils and their inhomogeneities were designed theoretically. The magnetic field gradient is a crucial parameter for the coils, especially for generating magnetic fields in very small areas. We used a NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) method based on the relaxation of 131Xe nuclear spins to measure the magnetic field gradient in situ. This is the first time that the field inhomogeneities of the field of such small bi-planar coils have been measured. Our results indicate that the designed gradient caused error is 0.08 for the By and the Bx coils, and the measured gradient caused error using the nuclear spin relaxation method is 0.09±0.02, suggesting that our method is suitable for measuring gradients. Due to the poor sensitivity of our magnetometer under a large Bz bias field, we could not measure the Bz magnetic field gradient. Our method also helps to improve the gradients of the miniature bi-planar coil design, which is critical for chip-scale atomic devices.

Waste plastics may be an environmentally friendly alternative to natural aggregates for concrete manufacture. However, the inferior bond strength between waste plastic aggregates and cement matrix greatly limits the uses of waste plastics for engineering designs and applications. Herein, ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) and nanosilica (nS) were jointly employed to enhance the matrix-aggregate interactions in cementitious composites with recycled waste plastics (RWPs). Waterproof properties of the cementitious composites with EVA and nS hybrids were measured. A non-destructive test using micro-focus X-ray computed tomography (µ-XCT) with contrast enhancing technique followed by microstructural tests (SEM/BSE and EDS) were conducted to in-situ trace liquid migration in the composite specimens. The single addition of EVA into the cementitious composites increased the porosity and depressed the compressive strength, but greatly decreased the water sorptivity by nearly 50 %. The organic–inorganic (EVA-nS) hybrids enhanced the recycling potential of the waste plastics in terms of the mitigated strength reduction and improved waterproofing performance. The coupled polymerization of EVA and nanofilling of nS effects were resolved to account for the recyclability improvement. The findings would shed light on design and fabrication of cementitious materials towards large scale recycling methods and technologies of waste plastics.

XopC2 effectors are present in many plant bacterial pathogens. Here the authors show that XopC2 has kinase activity and enhances disease susceptibility by phosphorylating the OSK1 protein, which increases its interaction with the jasmonate receptor COI1b to promote JA signaling and stomatal opening.

Introduction Rituximab (RTX) effectively prevents relapses in patients with complicated steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS). The 1-year relapse-free survival rate is approximately 30% in children after the first episode of SSNS treated with standardised corticosteroids. Whether the benefits of RTX extend to the first relapse are unknown. The efficacy and safety of RTX in the first episode of paediatric idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (RTXFIRPedINS) trial (NCT04783675) will assess its effect on the risk of subsequent relapse.Methods and analysis RTXFIRPedINS is an open-label, single-arm, multicentre trial targeting patients aged 1–18 years with a first episode of SSNS. All patients will receive standardised corticosteroid treatment for 12 weeks. A sample size of 44 patients provides 80% power to detect a 20% increase in the 1-year relapse-free rate, assuming a dropout rate of 10%. After obtaining informed consent and screening, eligible patients will be treated with a single intravenous infusion of 375 mg/m2 RTX within 1 week after achieving remission. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole will be administered for 3 months after RTX administration to prevent Pneumocystis carinii infection. The follow-up period will be 1 year. The primary outcome is the 1-year relapse-free survival rate after RTX infusion. The secondary study outcomes are the number of days from the infusion of RTX to the occurrence of the first relapse, 6-month relapse-free survival rate, the B cell recovery time and treatment-related adverse events. Immunological factors will be studied as predictors of response.Ethics and dissemination This trial was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and seven local ethics committees. We will publish our study results in peer-reviewed journals and present them at international scientific meetings.Trial registration number NCT04783675

BackgroundCongenital hyperinsulinemia (CHI) is an inherited disease of abnormal insulin secretion and is the main cause of persistent and intractable hypoglycemia in infants. The aim of this case report was to investigate the genetic mechanisms and treatment of CHI in an affected patient.Case summaryWe collected clinical data from, and performed gene capture, high-throughput gene sequencing analysis, and Sanger sequencing validation, in a child with CHI and his family to identify the causative gene mutations. Two heterozygous pathogenic mutations in the ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 8 (ABCC8) gene were detected in the child: c.863G>A (p.Trp288Ter) in exon 6 and c.2506C>T (p.Arg836Ter) in exon 21. Sanger sequencing showed that c.863G>A was inherited from heterozygous mutations in the paternal line and c.2506C>T from heterozygous mutations in the maternal line.ConclusionThe child was a CHI with a biallelic recessive heterozygous mutations in ABCC8 resulting in impairment of its encoded ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel, poor response to diazoxide treatment, and developed diabetes after subtotal pancreatectomy.

Sap flow is widely used to estimate the transpiration and water consumption of canopies and to manage water resources. In this paper, an improved time series prediction model was proposed by integrating three basic networks—CNN, GRU and BiLSTM—to assess sap flow with historical environment variables. A dataset with 17,569 records of each, including 9 environment variables and 1 sap flow, was applied from a public database of SAPFLUXNET. After normalization, the environment variables were analyzed and composed with the factor analysis method. After the CNN-GRU-BiLSTM structure was designed, N records of three main factors were computed from environment variables, which were measured at N previous moments, and the sap flow was measured at the current moment, and they were applied for each training, validation, and testing cycle. To improve and compare the CNN-GRU-BiLSTM-based model, nine other models, using the methods of multiple linear regression, support vector regression, random forest, LSTM, GRU, BiLSTM, CNN-GRU, CNN-BiLSTM, and CNN-GRU-LSTM, were constructed in this study, respectively. Results show that the performance of the CNN-GRU-BiLSTM-based model has more accuracy than the other nine models we built in this paper, with the mean absolute error, mean squared error, mean absolute percentage error, and coefficient of determination (R2) being 0.0410, 0.0029, 0.2708 and 0.9329, respectively. Furthermore, for a comparison of the descending dimension method of factor analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and singular value decomposition (SVD) methods were applied and compared, respectively. Results show that the performance of the factor analysis-based model is better than the PCA- or SVD-based model, with the R2 results of the factor analysis-based model being higher than the PCA- and SVD-based models by 5.06% and 10.63%, respectively. This study indicates that the CNN-GRU-BiLSTM-based sap flow prediction model established with a factor analysis of historical environmental variables has optimistic applications for analyzing the transpiration of trees and evaluating water consumption.

Heavy metal wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge due to its harmful effect on organisms and difficult biodegradation. To address this issue, hydrogel has been used as a promising solution for the adsorption of heavy metal ions in water, offering advantages such as low cost, simple design, and environmental friendliness. In this study, we synthetized a novel poly-acrylamide/acrylic acid/vinyl imidazole bromide (PAM/AA/[Vim]Br2) hydrogel as an effective adsorbent for the removal of NiII, CuII, ZnII, and CrIII from water. The structure of the hydrogel was characterized by using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By exploring various parameters such as monomer ratio, neutralization degree, crosslinking agent addition amount, and initiator addition amount, the highest swelling ratio of the PAM/AA/[Vim]Br2 hydrogel reached 40,012%. One of the notable aspects of this study lay in the investigation of the adsorption behavior of the hydrogel towards heavy metal ions at different concentrations. The adsorption isotherm calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed distinct adsorption mechanisms. At low concentrations, the hydrogel exhibits a multilayer physical adsorption mechanism, with heavy metal ion removal rates exceeding 80%; while at high concentrations, it demonstrates a monolayer chemical adsorption mechanism, with heavy metal ion removal rates above 90%. This dual mechanism approach distinguishes our study from previous reports on the removal of heavy metal ions using hydrogels and shows good ion adsorption efficiency at both high and low concentrations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to explore the removal of heavy metal ions from water using hydrogels with such intriguing dual mechanisms. Overall, the utilization of the PAM/PAA/[Vim]Br2 hydrogel as an adsorbent for heavy metal ion removal presents a promising and innovative approach, contributing to the development of environmentally friendly solutions for heavy metal wastewater treatment.

In this paper, a non-directional short-cut polyvinyl alcohol fiber (PVA), directional carbon-glass fabric woven net, and a combination of these fibers were used to reinforce sprayed cement mortar (named FRCM-SP, FRCM-CN, and FRCM-PN accordingly), and the direct tensile and four-point bending tests of these three types of thin plates were conducted. It was shown that the direct tensile strength of FRCM-PN reached 7.22 MPa under the same cement mortar matrix, which was 175.6% and 198.3% higher than that of FRCM-SP and FRCM-CN, respectively; the ultimate tensile strain of FRCM-PN was 3.34%, which was 65.3% and 1291.7% higher than that of FRCM-SP and FRCM-CN, respectively. Similarly, the ultimate flexural strength of FRCM-PN reached 33.67 MPa, which was 182.5% and 519.6% higher than that of FRCM-SP and FRCM-CN, respectively. In addition, the tensile, bending toughness index, and residual strength factor of FRCM-PN were much higher than those of FRCM-SP and FRCM-CN, indicating that the incorporation of non-directional short-cut PVA fibers improved the interfacial bonding properties between the cement mortar matrix and the fiber yarn and significantly enhanced the toughness and energy dissipation capacity of the sprayed cement mortar. Therefore, the use of a certain amount of non-directional short-cut PVA fibers can improve the interfacial bonding properties between the cement mortar and the fabric woven net while ensuring the spraying performance and significantly improving the reinforcing and toughening effect on the cement mortar to meet the demand for large-area rapid construction and structural seismic reinforcement.

A high-power multicolor self-Q-switched laser emitting near 2 μm is demonstrated. Using the Tm:YAP crystal itself as the Q-switching element, the pulsed laser can achieve the highest average output power of 5.2 W ever reported to our knowledge, a pulse width of 0.52 μs, a slope efficiency of 47.3%, and a broadly tunable repetition rate of 22–143 kHz. Such performance is confirmed by a theoretical analysis involving thermal effects and saturable ground state re-absorption (GSRA). Additionally, the laser is capable of multi-wavelength output, including 1966, 1983.6, 1988.7 and 1991.6 nm, by using different output powers and transmittances. This scheme can effectively simplify the structure of laser resonator, and further promote the miniaturization of related devices at the 2 μm region.

With the rapid development of global industrialization and urbanization, as well as the continuous expansion of the population, large amounts of industrial exhaust gases and automobile exhaust are released. To better sound an early warning of air pollution, researchers have proposed many pollution prediction methods. However, the traditional point prediction methods cannot effectively analyze the volatility and uncertainty of pollution. To fill this gap, we propose a combined prediction system based on fuzzy granulation, multi-objective dragonfly optimization algorithm and probability interval, which can effectively analyze the volatility and uncertainty of pollution. Experimental results show that the combined prediction system can not only effectively predict the changing trend of pollution data and analyze local characteristics but also provide strong technical support for the early warning of air pollution.

Abstract Deep-borehole heat exchangers (DBHE) are generally coaxial pipes installed in deep boreholes and has become an alternative approach to utilize geothermal energy. Since the performance of the DBHE system can be affected by several parameters, it is important to optimize the design of parameters for the DBHE. In this paper, based on the analytical method, we carried out the sensitivity analysis of DBHE design parameters, including outer pipe diameter, inner pipe diameter, flow rate, outer pipe materials, grout materials, and borehole depth during continuous operation for 4 months. The sensitivity analysis results indicate that the heat extraction rate can be significantly affected by outer pipe diameter, borehole depth, and flow rate. The effects of grout materials, inner pipe diameter and outer pipe materials are of second-order. Finally, an optimization method based on the lowest Average Energy Cost index was proposed to optimize these DBHE design parameters under different geological conditions. Given the cost in this study, a combination scheme of all the optimal parameters is given for different depth wells under different geological conditions.

The rapid growth of rutile TiO2 single crystals through a laser floating zone (LFZ) method was demonstrated. LFZ has a higher power density, which is suitable for the growth of TiO2 crystals with a high melting point. By optimizing the crystal growth parameters, including the growth rate, gas atmosphere, and rotation rate, the crystals could achieve their largest size of φ 9 mm × 25 mm, with a growth cycle of 12 h, and no cracks appeared. The properties of the obtained crystals were close to those of the crystals grown using other schemes, with a whole transmission range of 0.41–6.56 μm, thermal expansion coefficient of 9.92 × 10−6/K, and laser damage threshold of 1.44 GW/cm2. The achieved results indicated that the crystals have high quality and good integrity when grown using LFZ and also imply a new choice for the rapid growth of rutile TiO2 single crystals.

The clevis-grip tensile test is usually employed to evaluate the mechanical properties of textile reinforced concrete (TRC) composites, which is actually a bond test and is unsuitable for determining reliable design parameters. Thus, the clevis-grip tensile test needs further improvement to obtain foreseeable results concerning TRC tensile behavior. This paper presents the experimental results of twenty-one tension tests performed on basalt TRC (BTRC) thin plates with different test setups, i.e., clevis-grip and improved clevis-grip, and with different textile ratios. The influences of test setups and textile ratios on crack patterns, failure mode, and tensile stress-strain curves with characteristic parameters were analyzed in depth to judge the feasibility of the new test setup. The results indicated that with the new test setup, BTRC composites exhibited textile rupture at failure; in addition, multi-cracks occurred to the BTRC composites as the textile ratio exceeded 1.44%. In this case, the obtained results relied on textile properties, which can be considered reliable for design purposes. The modified ACK model with a textile utilization rate of 50% provided accurate predictions for the tensile stress-strain behavior of the BTRC composite derived from the improved test setup. The proposed test setup enables the adequate utilization of BTRC composite and the reliability of obtained results related to the occurrence of textile rupture; nevertheless, further work is required to better understand the key parameters affecting the textile utilization rate, such as the strength of the concrete matrix.

Rice false smut caused by the biotrophic fungal pathogen Ustilaginoidea virens has become one of the most important diseases in rice. The large effector repertory in U. virens plays a crucial role in virulence. However, current knowledge of molecular mechanisms how U. virens effectors target rice immune signaling to promote infection is very limited. In this study, we identified and characterized an essential virulence effector, SCRE4 (Secreted Cysteine-Rich Effector 4), in U. virens. SCRE4 was confirmed as a secreted nuclear effector through yeast secretion, translocation assays and protein subcellular localization, as well as up-regulation during infection. The SCRE4 gene deletion attenuated the virulence of U. virens to rice. Consistently, ectopic expression of SCRE4 in rice inhibited chitin-triggered immunity and enhanced susceptibility to false smut, substantiating that SCRE4 is an essential virulence factor. Furthermore, SCRE4 transcriptionally suppressed the expression of OsARF17, an auxin response factor in rice, which positively regulates rice immune responses and resistance against U. virens. Additionally, the immunosuppressive capacity of SCRE4 depended on its nuclear localization. Therefore, we uncovered a virulence strategy in U. virens that transcriptionally suppresses the expression of the immune positive modulator OsARF17 through nucleus-localized effector SCRE4 to facilitate infection.

LuGdVO3 was obtained by annealing the LuGdVO4 crystal at 1500 °C under vacuum condition. The X-ray fluorescence analysis method was used to measure the concentrations of Lu and Gd elements in LuGdVO4. The XRD result indicated that LuGdVO3 was the orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm. The Raman spectrum of LuGdVO3 was investigated at room temperature. The chemical states and local symmetry of the LuGdVO3 crystal have been determined by XPS and XANES. It was found that the presence of different chemical forms of V evolved with annealing treatment, and the VO6 unit in the LuGdVO3 crystal was distorted octahedron. During the annealing process at high temperature under vacuum condition LuGdVO4 can be gradually translated to LuGdVO3 with decreasing lattice oxygen in the crystal lattice. Under complex seismic forces, the failure characteristics of the plastic hinge region at the bottom of the pier column and the methods improving the ductility have attracted extensive attention. In this study, steel fiber-reinforced concrete with fine aggregate (SFRC-FA) was applied to locally replace the conventional concrete in the potential plastic hinge region at the bottom of the pier column. Five SFRC-FA pier column specimens with different stirrup ratios and different replacement lengths and one conventional reinforced concrete pier column specimen were produced. Using the seismic behavior tests under the combined bending-shear-torsion-axial force, the failure mode, torsional bearing capacity, energy dissipation, and the torsional plastic hinges of the pier columns were investigated. In addition, an equation for calculating the torsional bearing capacity of the new composite pier columns was proposed. The results showed that (1) compared with the reinforced concrete pier column, the plastic hinge was shifted from the bottom of the pier column to the middle of the height of the pier column due to the application of SFRC-FA at the bottom of the pier column, which improved the torsional bearing capacity; (2) the effect of reducing the stirrup ratio of the SFRC-FA replacement region on the torsional bearing capacity, cracking mode, energy dissipation, and ductility was not obvious; (3) the accuracy of the new equation based on the space truss model proposed in this article was verified by comparison with the experiments of this study and other researches.

A new noncentrosymmetric cadmium indium borate, Cd4InO(BO3)3 (CIBO) has been successfully developed via a standard solid-state reaction. Its crystal structure was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction, which shows that CIBO belongs to the non-centrosymmetric and polar space group Cm. Its structure contains the distorted InO6 and CdOn (n = 6, 8) polyhedra, which link together by sharing an edge or corner to build a three dimensions framework with BO3 triangles accommodated in tunnels. Benefiting from the approximately parallel configuration of BO3 triangles, CIBO exhibited a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) effect (3 × KDP), and moderate birefringence of 0.077@1064 nm. Further optical and thermal characterizations suggest that CIBO possesses a wide transparent window and good thermal stability. Theoretical calculation reveals that the macroscopic SHG coefficients of CIBO results from the synergistic effect of the parallel arrangement of BO3 groups and d10 Cd2+ cation.

Passive Q-switching is an effective approach for generating pulsed lasers, owing to its compact and additional modulation-free design. However, to compare favorably with active Q-switching and multi-stage amplification, the output energy needs to be enhanced for practical applications. Kramers Ytterbium ion (Yb3+)-doped borate crystals, with their excellent energy storage capacity, have been proven to be high-potential laser gain mediums for achieving pulsed lasers with moderate and high output energy using passive Q-switching technology. In this study, the growth, characterization, and laser generation of one Yb3+-doped borate crystal, the Yb3+:ScBO3 crystal, are systematically reviewed. The continuous-wave and passive Q-switching laser characteristics are presented in detail, and the self-pulsations derived from intrinsic ground-state reabsorption are also demonstrated. The specific characteristics and experiments confirm the potential of the Yb3+:ScBO3 crystal for future pulsed laser applications with moderate or even high energy output.

The Er,Yb:LuGdVO4 crystal was grown by the Czochralski method under the oxygen-deficient atmosphere, and cut into slices, which were annealed in different conditions. The crystalline quality of the as-grown crystal was characterized by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The effects of different annealing conditions on the structures, chemical states and local symmetry of Er,Yb:LuGdVO4 were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) in detail. The content of V4+ in the crystal obviously decreased after annealing. The distribution of elements in the sample was analyzed by the SR-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The specific heat and thermal diffusion of Er,Yb:LuGdVO4 crystal were measured, and absorption spectra of the samples annealed in different conditions were recorded at room temperature. The results show that the annealing process has few influences on the thermal properties and remarkable influences on the optical properties. The self-frequency-doubling (SFD) crystal is a representative of multifunctional crystals. In recent years, SFD crystals and lasers have gained renewed attention based on the progress on SFD crystals and lasers and Nd:RECa4O(BO3)3 (RE = Y or Gd) crystals, with SFD lasers becoming commercial products. Here, we review the advances of SFD crystals and lasers, including the basic selection rules, theoretical analysis and recent progress of some potential SFD crystals and lasers. The Nd:RECa4O(BO3)3 crystals and lasers are highlighted, and their applications are also proposed and discussed, which may provide some inspiration for the further development of the SFD field and multifunctional materials.

A novel electrochemical sensor based on electropolymerized ion imprinted poly (o-phenylenediamine) PoPD/electrochemical reduced graphene (ERGO) composite on glass carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated for selective and sensitive determination of trace Cd(II) in water. ERGO was first deposited on the surface of GCE by electrochemical cyclic voltammetry (CV) scanning to enhance the electron transport activity at electrode surface. The ion imprinted polymer (IIP) of imprinted PoPD was then in situ electropolymerized on ERGO via CV scanning with oPD as functional monomer and Cd(II) ions as template, following removal of the template using electrochemical peroxidation method. The obtained imprinted PoPD/RERGO composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray energy spectroscopy (EDS) for the observation of their morphologies and components. The electrochemical behavior of the imprinted PoPD/ERGO/GCE was performed by CV and SWASV. The fabricated sensor of the imprinted PoPD/ERGO/GCE showed a good selectivity toward target Cd(II) ions in the presence of other heavy metal ions. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the sensor exhibited a good linear relationship between SWASV stripping peak values and Cd(II) concentration in the range of 1 to 50 ng/mL, with the limit of detection as 0.13 ng/mL (S/N = 3). The proposed electrochemical sensor of imprinted PoPD/ERGO/GCE was successfully applied for trace Cd(II) determination in real water samples.

Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola, the causal agent of bacterial leaf streak, is one of the most important bacterial pathogens in rice. However, little is known about the functions of individual type III effectors in virulence and pathogenicity of X. oryzae pv. oryzicola. Here, we examined the effect of the mutations of 23 putative nontranscription activator-like effector genes on X. oryzae pv. oryzicola virulence. The avrBs2 knock-out mutant was significantly attenuated in virulence to rice. In contrast, the xopAA deletion caused enhanced virulence to a certain rice cultivar. It was also demonstrated that six putative effectors, including XopN, XopX, XopA, XopY, XopF1, and AvrBs2, caused the hypersensitive response on nonhost Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. Virulence function of AvrBs2 was further confirmed by transgenic technology. Pathogen-associated molecular pattern–triggered immune responses including the generation of reactive oxygen species and expression of pathogenesis-related genes were strongly suppressed in the AvrBs2-expressing transgenic rice lines. Although not inhibiting flg22-induced activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, heterologous expression of AvrBs2 greatly promotes disease progression in rice caused by two important bacterial pathogens X. oryzae pvs. oryzae and oryzicola. Collectively, these results indicate that AvrBs2 is an essential virulence factor that contributes to X. oryzae pv. oryzicola virulence through inhibiting defense responses and promoting bacterial multiplication in monocot rice.

Functional crystals are the basic materials for the development of modern science and technology and are playing key roles in the modern information era. In this paper, we review functional crystals in China, including research history, significant achievements, and important applications by highlighting the most recent progress in research. Challenges for the development of functional materials are discussed and possible directions for development are proposed by focusing on potential strengths of these materials.

Midinfrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with high performance are vital in important technological applications in many civil and military fields. Very recently, langasite family compounds have attracted much attention due to their wide transparency to mid-IR region and ultrahigh laser damage threshold (LDT). In this brief review, three important compounds—LGS, LGN, and LGT—are investigated and analyzed based on available experimental data. The electrooptical (EO) Q-switch and mid-IR OPO applications are summarized in detail. Finally, promising search directions for new metal oxides that have good mid-IR NLO performances are discussed.

The full matrix of electro-elastic constants of sillenite-type crystals Bi12TiO20 (BTO) and Bi12SiO20 (BSO) were determined by the resonance method, with d14 and k14 being on the order of 40–48 pC/N and 31%–36%, respectively. In addition, double-rotated orientation dependence of d33 was investigated, with the maximum values of 25–28 pC/N being achieved in ZXtl45°/54°-cut samples. The electrical resistivity of BSO was found to be two orders higher than that of BTO, being on the order of 7 × 105 Ω cm at 500 °C. The temperature dependence of dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. BSO exhibited a high thermal stability in the temperature range of 25–500 °C, while BTO showed a variation of ~3% in the range of 25–350 °C. The high values of d14 and k14, together with the good thermal stability, make BTO and BSO crystals potential candidates for electromechanical applications in medium temperature range.

We demonstrated the dual-wavelength simultaneously Q-switched Nd: Lu2O3 laser with a topological insulator Bi2Se3 as the Q-switcher. The continuous-wave Nd:Lu2O3 crystal laser with the slope efficiency of 31% was achieved, and the first Nd:Lu2O3 pulsed laser operation was reported, as far as we know. By using the wavelength-insensitive saturable absorption of topological insulators, the dual wavelength of the Nd:Lu2O3 crystal laser can be Q-switched simultaneously without the frequency selection of the saturable absorber, since the emission cross-sections of Nd:Lu2O3 at the wavelengths of 1077 and 1081 nm are comparable. The results indicate that the topological insulator is wavelength-insensitive and should be suitable for the dual-wavelength simultaneously Q-switched laser as a passive Q-switcher. It can be proposed that this work would provide an efficient technology for the dual-wavelength simultaneously Q-switched laser, which has promising applications in many regimes.

Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) is questioned for possibly damaging the micro structure of cement-based materials (CBMs), but this theme still has a lack of quantitative evidence. By using X-ray computed tomography (XCT), this study reported an experimental investigation on probing the pore structure damages in paste and mortar samples after a standard MIP test. XCT scans were performed on the samples before and after mercury intrusion. Because of its very high mass attenuation coefficient, mercury can greatly enhance the contrast of XCT images, paving a path to probe the same pores with and without mercury fillings. The paste and mortar showed the different MIP pore size distributions but similar intrusion processes. A grey value inverse for the pores and material skeletons before and after MIP was found. With the features of excellent data reliability and robustness verified by a threshold analysis, the XCT results characterized the surface structure of voids, and diagnosed the pore structure damages in terms of pore volume and size of the paste and mortar samples. The findings of this study deepen the understandings in pore structure damages in CBMs by mercury intrusion, and provide methodological insights in the microstructure characterization of CBMs by XCT.

Two new organic–inorganic hybrid molecular single crystals, 4-Iodoanilinium perchlorate 18-crown-6 (1) and 4-Iodoanilinium borofluorate 18-crown-6 (2), with large sizes and high thermal stability were successfully synthesized by solution method. Their structures, phase purities, thermal stability, dielectric, absorption and fluorescence spectra were systematically investigated for potential applications. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in orthorhombic crystal system, in same space group, namely Pnma. The thermal measurements shown 1 and 2 maintain high thermal stability up to 150 °C. The temperature dependency of dielectric constant was studied, and no distinct anomaly was observed. The band gap were calculated to be 3.38 eV and 3.57 eV for 1 and 2, respectively, slightly smaller than those of layer perovskite (benzylammonium)2PbCl4 semiconducting materials, which have potential applications in optoelectronic detection field. The investigations throw light on the semiconductor properties of organic–inorganic hybrid crown type material and provide two types of crown compounds with high thermal stability.

In recent years, healthcare has attracted much attention, which is looking for more and more data analytics in healthcare to relieve medical problems in medical staff shortage, ageing population, people living alone, and quality of life. Data mining, analysis, and forecasting play a vital role in modern social and medical fields. However, how to select a proper model to mine and analyze the relevant medical information in the data is not only an extremely challenging problem, but also a concerning problem. Tuberculosis remains a major global health problem despite recent and continued progress in prevention and treatment. There is no doubt that the effective analysis and accurate forecasting of global tuberculosis prevalence rates lay a solid foundation for the construction of an epidemic disease warning and monitoring system from a global perspective. In this paper, the tuberculosis prevalence rate time series for four World Bank income groups are targeted. Kruskal–Wallis analysis of variance and multiple comparison tests are conducted to determine whether the differences of tuberculosis prevalence rates for different income groups are statistically significant or not, and a novel combined forecasting model with its weights optimized by a recently developed artificial intelligence algorithm—cuckoo search—is proposed to forecast the hierarchical tuberculosis prevalence rates from 2013 to 2016. Numerical results show that the developed combination model is not only simple, but is also able to satisfactorily approximate the actual tuberculosis prevalence rate, and can be an effective tool in mining and analyzing big data in the medical field.
