Abstract Background Sanniang Bay (SNB) and Dafeng River (DFR), located in the northern Beibu Gulf, is well-known as one of the eight habitats for humpback dolphins in China. This region is representative of typical estuarine and bay ecosystems and produce complex hydrodynamic seawater conditions. Moreover, anthropogenic pressure, such as eutrophication and large-scale infrastructure projects, have caused ongoing habitat deterioration and loss. It is urgent to know the phytoplankton community and their relationships with environmental factors in this region. Results In this study, we assessed the diversity and assembly mechanisms of phytoplankton communities, as well as their relationship with the physicochemical characteristics of seawater in SNB and DFR region using 18 S rDNA metabarcoding analysis. The results showed that seasonal changes markedly impacted the alpha diversity of the phytoplankton community. From March to July, with the average temperature increasing from 25.2℃ to 28.1℃,the Shannon or Species Richness were negatively correlated with temperature. During hot season (in Sep, average temperature 32.1℃), phytoplankton diversity was negatively correlated with nutrients (NH4 +, NO3 −, PO4 3−, TN). Additionally, during the rainy season, the Bray-Curtis similarity of the phytoplankton community was significantly lower than during the dry season. In March, the distance among the sampling sites was most strongly and positively correlated with the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity. Stochastic processes, specifically dispersal limitation and ecological drift, are the primary drivers of community assembly, while deterministic assembly processes (mainly heterogeneous selection) contribute a relatively minor portion (

Chlorella vulgaris is one of the most commonly used microalgae in aquaculture feeds. It contains high concentrations of various kinds of nutritional elements that are involved in the physiological regulation of aquaculture animals. However, few studies have been conducted to illustrate their influence on the gut microbiota in fish. In this work, the gut microbiota of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (average weight is 6.64 g) was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene after feeding with 0.5% and 2% C. vulgaris additives in diets for 15 and 30 days (average water temperature was 26 °C). We found that the impact of C. vulgaris on the gut microbiota of Nile tilapia was feeding-time dependent. Only by feeding for 30 days (not 15 days) did the addition of 2% C. vulgaris to diets significantly elevate the alpha diversity (Chao1, Faith pd, Shannon, Simpson, and the number of observed species) of the gut microbiota. Similarly, C. vulgaris exerted a significant effect on the beta diversity (Bray–Curtis similarity) of the gut microbiota after feeding for 30 days (not 15 days). During the 15-day feeding trial, LEfSe analysis showed that Paracoccus, Thiobacillus, Dechloromonas, and Desulfococcus were enriched under 2% C. vulgaris treatment. During the 30-day feeding trial, Afipia, Ochrobactrum, Polymorphum, Albidovulum, Pseudacidovorax, and Thiolamprovum were more abundant in 2% C. vulgaris-treated fish. C. vulgaris promoted the interaction of gut microbiota in juvenile Nile tilapia by increasing the abundance of Reyranella. Moreover, during the feeding time of 15 days, the gut microbes interacted more closely than those during the feeding time of 30 days. This work will be valuable for understanding how C. vulgaris in diets impacts the gut microbiota in fish.

Brick tea-type fluorosis (BTF) due to a high intake of brick tea is possible in Tibetan populations, and dental fluorosis (DF) and skeletal fluorosis (SF) are its primary manifestations. To determine the prevalence of DF and SF and their relationships with brick tea intake in Tibetan populations, a literature review was conducted for studies published between 1994 and 2021. The available evidence revealed that brick tea may be produced from older stems and leaves of the tea plant and that the fluoride content of brick tea exceeds the national standard. The harsh environment of the plateau has led to limited food sources for the local Tibetan people who form the habit of drinking tea leaves as a satiation solution to digest greasy food and replenish vitamins, and regular consumption of brick tea leads to excessive exposure of Tibetan residents to fluoride. Studies in Tibet showed that the prevalence of DF in children was 14.06–75.93% in different districts, and the overall pooled prevalence of DF was 26.08%. The prevalence of SF in adults was 19.90–74.77% in different Tibetan districts, and the overall pooled prevalence of SF was 33.84%. The analysis of risk factors showed that the prevalence of BTF may be related to high-altitude and different working and living conditions, and BTF in children may be associated with fluoride intake during mothers’ pregnancy and lactation. With the development of bioinformatics research, gene polymorphisms were suspected to be related to susceptibility to fluorosis in Tibetan populations. The study of BTF in Tibetan people needs to be further investigated and standardized, and additional studies evaluating the pathogenesis and preventive measures of BTF are warranted.

Nowadays, most blue organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are fabricated by using sky-blue emitters which are more easily synthesized when compared with other deep blue emitters. Herein, we put forward a new idea of using an optical micro-cavity based on metal electrodes to regulate electroluminance (EL) spectra of sky-blue organic light emitting diodes to obtain a saturated deep blue emission with a narrowed full-width at half-maximum (FWHM). First, we simulate micro-cavity OLEDs and find that the transmission of the anode plays an important role in the forward emission. Meanwhile, the optical path of micro-cavity OLEDs as well as the phase shifting from electrodes influence the EL spectra and induce the extra intensity enhancement. The results show that when the resonant cavity optical path is regulated by changing the thickness of emitting layer (EML) from 25 nm to 75 nm in the micro-cavity, the EL peak of blue OLEDs has a redshift from 479 nm to 493 nm with FWHM shifting from 69.8 nm to 83.2 nm, when compared to the device without the micro-cavity, whose approximate EL peak and FWHM are 487 nm and 87 nm, respectively. However, the efficiency of electroluminescence decreases in micro-cavity OLEDs. We speculate that this is on account of the ohmic contact between ITO and Ag, the surface plasma effect and the rough morphology induced by Ag electrodes.

Carbonate strata are a vital and favorable reservoir for global oil and gas exploration, and carbonate sedimentary systems record ancient oceanic and paleoclimatic conditions, including paleoenvironmental variations throughout geologic periods. Carbonate platforms are widely distributed among the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea and contain large amounts of oil and gas resources. Biogenic reefs are the dominant parts of the carbonate platforms in the Xisha Islands; however, research on the factors that control and affect biogenic reef development is lacking. In this study, a core from well XK-1, which is located on Yongxing Island in the Xisha Islands, a sedimentary noise model, and time-series analyses were used to determine the effects of sea-level fluctuations from 5.3 Ma to present. The results show that coral reefs in the Xisha Islands are sensitive to eustatic fluctuations and that a decrease in sea level essentially corresponds to an increase in sedimentation rate. Indexes of the East Asian monsoon and other environmental indexes show that the Pleistocene and Holocene were suitable for coral growth; however, the trends shown by these indexes and the sea-level variation indicate that the future growth of coral reefs will be at a disadvantage. Research on the controlling factors of biogenic reefs is of significance for understanding reef growth, performing global reef comparisons, and encouraging the future protection of coral reefs. Subaerial volcanism and atmospheric volcanic ash deposition have been recognized as factors that can greatly affect the nutrient content of the surface ocean and the redox conditions of the water column. Black siliceous, organic-rich mudstone and shale containing numerous volcanic ash layers were deposited in the South China Block during the Ordovician-Silurian transition. Although this association has been observed in other regions, whether there is a relationship between volcanic ash and the organic carbon contents and the effect of volcanic ash remains unclear. Based on analysis of the concentrations of major elements, trace elements, and total organic carbon in the volcanic ash and shale, we found that anoxic and high-productivity environments existed during the Ordovician-Silurian transition and that organic matter was preferentially preserved under these conditions. For the volcanic ash, we quantitatively estimated the depletion of the nutrient elements Fe, Si, and P (in percentages). The calculated results show that leaching removed 25-75% of the Fe, Si, and P in most of the ash samples in the study area, potentially leading to high marine primary productivity in the surface water. Redox conditions also played a major role in the preservation of organic matter. The trace element analysis results show that although productivity was high during the Ordovician-Silurian transition, organic matter was preferentially preserved in the Lower Silurian strata. Therefore, high organic matter flux and good preservation conditions both contributed to the formation of the organic-rich shale, and volcanic ash was the dominant source of nutrients for primary productivity.
