Abstract

The technology of wearable medical equipment has advanced to the point where it is now possible to monitor the electrocardiogram and electromyogram comfortably at home. The transition from wet Ag/AgCl electrodes to various types of gel-free dry electrodes has made it possible to continuously and accurately monitor the biopotential signals. Fabrics or textiles, which were once meant to protect the human body, have undergone significant development and are now employed as intelligent textile materials for healthcare monitoring. The conductive textile electrodes provide the benefit of being breathable and comfortable. In recent years, there has been a significant advancement in the fabrication of wearable conductive textile electrodes for monitoring biopotential signals. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advances in wearable conductive textile electrodes for biopotential signal monitoring. The paper covers various aspects of the technology, including the electrode design, various manufacturing techniques utilised to fabricate wearable smart fabrics, and performance characteristics. The advantages and limitations of various types of textile electrodes are discussed, and key challenges and future research directions are identified. This will allow them to be used to their fullest potential for signal gathering during physical activities such as running, swimming, and other exercises while being linked into wireless portable health monitoring systems.

Abstract

Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) is a technique for the fabrication of sculpted micro- and nanostructures under the conditions of oblique vapor flux incident and limited adatom diffusion. GLAD-based nanostructures are emerging platforms with broad sensing applications due to their high sensitivity, enhanced optical and catalytic properties, periodicity, and controlled morphology. GLAD-fabricated nanochips and substrates for chemical and biosensing applications are replacing conventionally used nanomaterials due to their broad scope, ease of fabrication, controlled growth parameters, and hence, sensing abilities. This review focuses on recent advances in the diverse nanostructures fabricated via GLAD and their applications in the biomedical field. The effects of morphology and deposition conditions on GLAD structures, their biosensing capability, and the use of these nanostructures for various biosensing applications such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and colorimetric- and wettability-based bio-detection will be discussed in detail. GLAD has also found diverse applications in the case of molecular imaging techniques such as fluorescence, super-resolution, and photoacoustic imaging. In addition, some in vivo applications, such as drug delivery, have been discussed. Furthermore, we will also provide an overview of the status of GLAD technology as well as future challenges associated with GLAD-based nanostructures in the mentioned areas.

3. Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Academic Activities of Academicians in Nepal

Abstract

This study explored the academic activities of academicians during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal. An online questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data from 361 academicians about changes in academic and extracurricular activities. The findings showed that the majority of participants (69% and 72%) agreed that both academic and extracurricular activities, respectively, were adversely affected by the lockdown during the pandemic. The results also showed that the study hours, sleeping hours, and social networking increased while concentration on academic activities decreased during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

An explicit study of comparison on the basis of structure and electronic properties of ZnO nanostructures was discussed. ZnO synthesized by sol-gel and hydrothermal method without using any surfactant leads to the formation of two different morphologies. Rietveld crystal structure refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the wurtzite structure of both samples. Raman spectra also confirmed the wurtzite phase formation and improved crystallinity in sample synthesized by hydrothermal route that are concurrent with results obtained from X-ray diffraction. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of ZnO spherical nanoparticle structure for sol-gel method and flower like μ-structure for ZnO prepared through hydrothermal route. Williamson-Hall equations applied to study the strain and stress parameters present in the material, show the decrease in their values as the crystal size increases. Energy band gap is calculated using diffused reflectance spectroscopy. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure measurements at O K- and Zn L3,2- edges simulated with FEFF9.05 code confirmed the presence of oxygen vacancies. Further extended x-ray absorption fine-structure revealed a similar local atomic structure for both samples despite having different morphologies.

5. Effects of Different Inhibitors on the Corrosion Mitigation of Steel Rebar Immersed in NaCl-Contaminated Concrete Pore Solution

Abstract

The corrosion of steel rebar embedded in concrete under marine conditions is a major global concern. Therefore, it needs a proper corrosion mitigation method. Various types of corrosion inhibitors are used to mitigate the corrosion of steel rebar in chloride-contaminated concrete; however, selecting the appropriate inhibitor and determining its optimal concentration remains a concern. Therefore, in the present study, three types of inhibitors—calcium nitrite (CN: Ca(NO2)2), N,N′-dimethyl ethanol amine (DMEA: (CH3)2NCH2CH2OH), and L-arginine (LA: C6H14N4O2) in three different concentrations, i.e., 0.3, 0.6 and 1.2 M—were compared with a control (without inhibitor, i.e., blank) sample to determine the optimum concentration of the inhibitor for corrosion resistance performance evaluation of reinforcement bars immersed in 0.3 M NaCl-contaminated concrete pore (NCCP) solution for various durations. The corrosion resistance properties were assessed using open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with immersion duration, and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) after 168 h of exposure. The results showed that the CN inhibitor performed exceptionally well (corrosion inhibition efficiency greater than 97%) in terms of corrosion resistance. However, due to its hazardous nature and its ban in the U.S. and European Union, CN cannot be used in construction. In comparison, while DMEA showed some effectiveness, LA performed better and is also eco-friendly. The corrosion resistance efficiency of samples containing 0.6 M LA remains above 97% even after 168 h of immersion in the NCCP solution. This efficiency is consistent throughout the entire immersion period, from 1 h to 168 h. Therefore, it is recommended that LA be used as a corrosion inhibitor for steel reinforcement bars instead of CN, particularly in chloride-contaminated concrete, as it is both effective and safer than CN.

Abstract

Rationale: Oral treprostinil improves exercise capacity in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), but the effect on clinical outcomes was unknown.Objectives: To evaluate the effect of oral treprostinil compared with placebo on time to first adjudicated clinical worsening event in participants with PAH who recently began approved oral monotherapy.Methods: In this event-driven, double-blind study, we randomly allocated 690 participants (1:1 ratio) with PAH to receive placebo or oral treprostinil extended-release tablets three times daily. Eligible participants were using approved oral monotherapy for over 30 days before randomization and had a 6-minute-walk distance 150 m or greater. The primary endpoint was the time to first adjudicated clinical worsening event: death; hospitalization due to worsening PAH; initiation of inhaled or parenteral prostacyclin therapy; disease progression; or unsatisfactory long-term clinical response.Measurements and Main Results: Clinical worsening occurred in 26% of the oral treprostinil group compared with 36% of placebo participants (hazard ratio, 0.74; 95% confidence interval, 0.56-0.97; P = 0.028). Key measures of disease status, including functional class, Borg dyspnea score, and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, all favored oral treprostinil treatment at Week 24 and beyond. A noninvasive risk stratification analysis demonstrated that oral treprostinil-assigned participants had a substantially higher mortality risk at baseline but achieved a lower risk profile from Study Weeks 12-60. The most common adverse events in the oral treprostinil group were headache, diarrhea, flushing, nausea, and vomiting.Conclusions: In participants with PAH, addition of oral treprostinil to approved oral monotherapy reduced the risk of clinical worsening.Clinical trial registered with www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT01560624).

BackgroundThe Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry.Methods and resultsA total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). 9. Mental Health Problems and Patterns of Self-Care Associated with the Use of Digital Devices among University Students

Abstract

Background: Digital devices such as computers, laptops, television (TV) and mobile phones were originally designed to support human beings’ daily activities; however, they may produce several limitations as well as benefits. The main concern of the study was how the utilization of digital devices like laptops, computers and TVs affect the mental health of Nepal’s university students and what are the self-care practices utilized to manage problems? Method: 326 MPhil scholars of Nepal Open University (NOU) participated in this cross-sectional study. Digital devices pattern of use (i.e., TV, laptop and computer), mental health problems, and self-care practices among university students were assessed through a semi-structured questionnaire. Chi-square test and binary logistic regression were major statistical techniques used in the research. Results: The study’s researchers found the following mental health problems: depression (21.5%), loneliness (39.9%), anxiety (30.7%), and a loss of the sense of control (47.5%). Significant associations were found between sitting position with loneliness, age and anxiety and the daily use of computer with sense of control, loneliness, and anxiety. Additionally, computer use two to three times a week, laptop use in the evening and sitting on a chair or stool when using digital devices, stood as the main predictors respectively of the sense of control, loneliness, and depression. Few participants with mental health problems used medicine and meditation for self-care. Conclusion: The use of digital devices was associated with mental health problems. Patterns of using computers and the preferred time to use laptops were major contributing factors for one’s sense of control and loneliness, respectively. Therefore, an awareness programme concerning the use of digital devices and their effects on mental health should be communicated among university students.

10. Visual Outcome of Combined Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty and Sutured Scleral Fixated Intraocular Lens in Endothelial Decompensation with Coexistent Aphakia or Intra Ocular Lens Subluxation

Abstract

Purpose To elucidate visual outcome of patients after combined Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) with scleral fixated intra ocular lens (SFIOL) implantation in patients of endothelial decompensation with coexistent aphakia or lens subluxation. Materials and Methods A prospective interventional study of combined DSEK with sutured SFIOL in the patients who have undergone surgery at our center over 6-month follow-up period. Preoperative visual acuity and slit lamp findings were documented. Postoperative follow-up was done at days 1, 3, and 7 subsequently, months 1 and 3, and thereafter monthly till the sixth month. Results Mean age of the patients was 60.47 years. Six patients had aphakic bullous keratopathy, while 11 patients had pseudophakic bullous keratopathy with subluxated posterior chamber IOL (PCIOL). Preoperative visual acuity ranged from hand movements close to face (LogMar 2.4) with accurate projection of rays to 1/60 (LogMar 2) due to existing corneal edema and aphakia. Postoperatively uncorrected visual acuity at 6 months improved up to 6/36 (LogMar 0.8) in all cases. There was gradual improvement in corneal clarity and compactness during the follow-up. A good donor tissue endothelial count and an adequate IOP control were vital prognostic factors for the successful outcome. Conclusion This novel surgical merger reduces the complications of lenticule dislocation into vitreous and repeated surgeries and shows results akin to when performed in a staged manner.

11. pH-controlled synthesis of sustainable lauric acid/SiO2 phase change material for scalable thermal energy storage

Abstract

Abstract Lauric acid (LA) has been recommended as economic, eco-friendly, and commercially viable materials to be used as phase change materials (PCMs). Nevertheless, there is lack of optimized parameters to produce microencapsulated PCMs with good performance. In this study, different amounts of LA have been chosen as core materials while tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the precursor solution to form silicon dioxide (SiO2) shell. The pH of precursor solution was kept at 2.5 for all composition of microencapsulated LA. The synthesized microencapsulated LA/SiO2 has been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The SEM and TEM confirm the microencapsulation of LA with SiO2. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed better thermal stability of microencapsulated LA/SiO2 compared to pure LA. PCM with 50% LA i.e. LAPC-6 exhibited the highest encapsulation efficiency (96.50%) and encapsulation ratio (96.15%) through Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as well as good thermal reliability even after 30th cycle of heating and cooling process.

Abstract

Diesel engines are commonly employed in transportation and power generation. Due to the fast usage of fossil fuels such as diesel, alternative fuels for transportation and power generation are required. In present study, waste soybean cooking oil (WSCO) biodiesel is used as an alternative fuel in an agriculture-based diesel engine. The investigation has been done with blends of WSCO biodiesel-ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) at different EGR rates using Response surface methodology (RSM). Binary blends were prepared by adding 20–35% v/v of WSCO biodiesel with ULSD. The results show that blend 35% v/v WSCO biodiesel-ULSD at 15% EGR (B35EGR15) has found maximum desirability. There is a significant reduction in NOx and smoke emissions by 59.04% and 17.46% respectively for B35EGR15 as compared to ULSDEGR0 with tolerable limit of BTE. The cost analysis shows that B35EGR15 is more economical than ULSDEGR0. It is concluded that all WSCO biodiesel-ULSD blends are shown to be effective in decreasing emissions in diesel engines.

BackgroundPreterm birth (PTB) is a global issue although its burden is higher in low- and middle-income countries. This study examined the risk factors of PTB in Southeastern Terai, Nepal.MethodsIn this community-based cross-sectional study, a total of 305 mothers having children under the age of 6 months were selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected by structured interviewer-administered questionnaires and maternal antenatal cards from study participants for some clinical information. Predictors of PTB were identified using multi-level logistic regression analysis at a P-value < 0.05.ResultsOf the total 305 mother-live-born baby pairs, 13.77% (42/305) had preterm childbirth. Abstract

Background and Aims: Forero et al. described two approaches of erector spinae (ES) plane block: superficial and deep to erector spinae muscle. We hypothesised that the superficial technique would not lead to optimum analgesia as the drug would have to cross one more muscle layer. We aimed to compare the techniques in terms of analgesia and sensory blockade in patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy (MRM). Methods: Forty American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I/II female patients in age group 18–60 years undergoing unilateral MRM were included in this prospective study. Group D patients received 20 mL 0.2% ropivacaine deep to erector spinae at the T4 level. Group S patients received 20 mL 0.2% ropivacaine superficial to erector spinae. Sensory level of block, perioperative opioid consumption, and adverse effects were noted. Results: Twenty four hours morphine consumption was less in group D: 5.47 ± 1.1 mg and in group S was 7.66 ± 0.74 mg (P < 0.001). The sensory spread was more in deep group in the posterior axillary and mid axillary line. There were no reported adverse effects in either group. Conclusion: Injection of drug deep to ES muscle provides more cranio-caudal blockade of posterior and lateral chest wall, hence providing better analgesia following breast surgery. Injection of the drug superficial to the muscle leads to inferior analgesia.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the stress-related physiological parameters of ophthalmic surgeons during complicated cataract surgery and compare them with uncomplicated routine cataract surgery. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 110 patients of various types of cataract were divided into two groups: Group 1 included 55 patients with simple cataract (Grade ≤3) with no ocular or systemic comorbidities, whereas Group 2 included 55 patients with complicated cataracts (Grade >3) and ocular/systemic comorbidities. All patients underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation in the right eye only. The outcome measures were systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and saturation of peripheral oxygen (SpO2). Results: The average SBP, DBP, MAP, and HR were significantly higher in the surgeon operating Group 2 (complicated cataract) compared with Group 1 (uncomplicated cataract; P < 0.05). The average SBP of the surgeon while operating Group 1 patients preoperatively and postoperatively was 125.42 ± 2.49 mmHg and 122.45 ± 2.10 mmHg, respectively, whereas in Group 2, the average SBP of the surgeon taken preoperatively and postoperatively was 145.98 ± 3.80 mmHg and 137.44 ± 3.45 mmHg, respectively (P < 0.05). The surgeon's SpO2 showed no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: There is a significant level of increase in stress-related parameters of operating surgeons while doing complicated cataract surgery.

Abstract

Aspiration of barium sulfate is a well-known complication, occurring accidentally during contrast-enhanced examinations of the upper gastrointestinal system. Massive aspiration of contrast material causes mechanical obstruction that increases alveolar dead space leading to altered ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) ratio with secondary respiratory failure and death. The potential treatment strategies include early recognition of predisposing factors, pretreatment with antireflux medications, such as domperidone, correct choice of contrast media, and use of retroesophageal suction catheter during barium swallow study. We report a case of barium swallow aspiration, which was successfully managed by early institution of bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL) and positive pressure mechanical ventilation. Till date, BAL has not been recommended for the same, with studies showing it can worsen the clinical scenario.

Abstract

3D highly porous architectures with tailored flexibility along with dimensional stability are currently an emerging area due to a wide range of technological applications. We have highlighted here the importance of mechanical and thermal stability of the building blocks and interfacial bonding for development of such scaffolds. 2D electrospun free-standing nanofibrous mats of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with different molecular weights were used to study the properties of basic foundation units. The nanohybrid shish-kebab (NHSK) type polycaprolactone (PCL) crosslinked networks were grown between the stacked nanofibrous mat for better bindings among the layers. Carbon nanotubes were further introduced into PET nanofibers as well as in binder envelop layers in order to insight into the properties of thermal and structural stability. The presence of different confined 1D nucleating surface like nanotubes and nanofibers gives us the opportunity to study interpenetrating NHSK lamellae at different length scale. A range of crosslinked scaffold microstructures by origami route were investigated to highlight the importance of process design for fabrication of dimensionally robust porous geometries.

Abstract

Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in people with overweight or obesity, but the effects of this drug on outcomes in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and heart failure are unknown. We report a prespecified analysis of the effect of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2·4 mg on ischaemic and heart failure cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed to investigate if semaglutide was beneficial in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with a history of heart failure compared with placebo; if there was a difference in outcome in patients designated as having heart failure with preserved ejection fraction compared with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction; and if the efficacy and safety of semaglutide in patients with heart failure was related to baseline characteristics or subtype of heart failure.

Background: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD–Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. Methods and results: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012–2016). Abstract

We replicated an earlier psycho-lexical study of personality traits in Hindi. The previous study gave results that deviated from the mainstream of lexical studies. This time an extended list of 357 trait descriptors was administered to 1,250 participants. Half of them provided self-ratings and the other half provided peer-ratings on these same participants. Principal Components Analyses were performed on the combined self- and peer-ratings, both with raw data and with ipsatized data. The resulting trait-structure was strongly evaluative in character, with the ancient personality system, the so-called triguna, seemingly largely determining its content. That structure, built on the three concepts rajasic, representing ambition and friendliness, tamasic, representing egoism and concealment, and sattvic, representing competence and harmony, was identified using triguna marker scales. It is unclear, however, whether it is the triguna that defines the structure, or whether it is mainly information of moral and evaluative character. Although the factors explained the variance in Big Five markers pretty well, the Big Five did not emerge as distinct factors.

Abstract

For the present work, calcite nanocrystals were grown by annealing precursors at 500 °C. These precursors were obtained by three different thermal schemes. Among these schemes, two involve heating at 100 °C for 16 h and 16 + 24 h, respectively. In the third scheme, heating was performed at 100 °C for 16 h, followed by annealing at 300 °C for 24 h. X-ray diffraction studies, followed by Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies, exhibited the formation of calcite phase of calcium carbonate. Transmission electron microscopy showed that particle sizes of synthesized calcite nanocrystals were in the range of 25–40 nm. Onsets of shape change were also observed with different thermal schemes, using these measurements. X-ray absorption spectroscopy envisaged that the coordination numbers of Ca-O and Ca-Ca shell were not influenced by the thermal schemes; however, bond lengths of these shells were modified. This study in the near edge region evidenced the manifestation of a local electronic structure of calcite when kept in an open environment, depending upon different thermal schemes.

27. FER Performance Analysis and Optimization of Diagonal Structure Based QC-LDPC Codes with Girth 12 Using LU Decomposition

Abstract

The manuscript presents the construction of a diagonally structured Parity check matrix using lower and upper (LU) decomposition for regular Quasi Cyclic-Low Density Parity Check Codes (QC-LDPC) with girth 12. This diagonally structured parity check matrix reduces the sparsity characteristics of QC-LDPC codes. The regular Quasi Cyclic-LDPC code has been constructed using circulant shifting and randomization method in which uniform distribution of non-zero elements, XOR operation, and pairing of row and column has been done. A Simplified Log Domain Sum-Product Algorithm (SLDSPA) is used for the decoding of the constructed code. To reduce the CPU run time of the constructed code, a column-wise loop optimization technique is applied. The frame error rate and CPU run time is calculated for different code lengths such as code1 (816, 408), code2 (1008, 504), code3 (1032, 516), code4 (1944, 972), code5 (672, 336) and code6 (504, 252). The construction of regular QC-LDPC codes on half code rate is obtained for the weight of each row is 6 and each column is given by 3. The results showing that the constructed code is better performing in terms of Low FER (10−1to 10−7), Low SNR (0 to 3.5 dB) and Less CPU run time in milliseconds.

Abstract

Here, we report synthesis of Ag2S nanostructures of zig-zag geometry to achieve the improved photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting response for hydrogen generation. A two-step process was utilized for the fabrication of working electrodes. The synthesis of zig-zag nanorods was carried out using glancing angle deposition followed by sulfurization. The PEC performance was studied by varying the number of zig-zag arms of Ag2S. The as-prepared four arm Ag2S zig-zag electrodes exhibited superior optical absorption, as well as photocurrent density of 3.04 mA/cm2 (at 1 V vs Ag/AgCl), compared to one arm Ag2S nanorods with minimum charge transfer resistance at the semiconducting electrode/electrolyte interface. The improved photocurrent density of four arm Ag2S zig-zag nanorods electrode was attributed to increased optical trapping and hence, effective absorption of light due to its wavy structure. The theoretical simulations based on rigorous coupled wave analysis were performed to understand the light absorption mechanism for the zig-zag Ag2S nanorods structures. This work provides a simple and effective approach towards the development of an efficient PEC electrode by tuning the morphology of nanostructured materials.

Metal oxides are an attractive choice in the gas sensor industry due to their physical and chemical properties. Here, we have developed a highly sensitive colorimetric gas sensor for H2S gas based on indium oxide (In2O3) nanostructures. The In2O3 nanostructures were prepared by the modified sol-gel method. The optical darkness ratio (ODR) of H2S gas-exposed In2O3 nanostructured samples was determined by using a smartphone-based application. The change in color of H2S exposed In2O3 nanostructured films was found to be due to sulfurization of top of In2O3 nanostructured film and formation of In2S3 layer. The oxygen vacancies (Vo) defects were observed to be the promising factor that boosts the formation of the In2S3 layer. The photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements revealed that the Vo defects get annihilated when the In2O3 nanostructured film was exposed to H2S gas for a longer time. At room temperature, In2O3 nanostructured film has exhibited a lower detection limit of 10 ppm in 30 seconds for H2S gas. A mechanism based on Vo defects in In2O3 nanostructured film is invoked to explain the colorimetric detection of H2S gas.

Abstract

Self-cleaning surfaces often make use of superhydrophobic coatings that repel water. Here, we report a hydrophobic Si nanospring surface, that effectively suppresses wetting by repelling water droplets. We investigated the dynamic response of Si nanospring arrays fabricated by glancing angle deposition. The vertical standing nanospring arrays were approximately 250 nm tall and 60 nm apart, which allowed the droplets to rebound within a few milliseconds after contact. Amazingly, the morphology of the nanostructures influences the impact dynamics. The rebound time and coefficient of restitution were also found to be higher for Si nanosprings than vertical SI columns. It has been proposed that the restoring force of the Si nanosprings may be responsible for the water droplet rebound and can be explained by considering the droplet/nanospring surface as a coupled spring system. Abstract

In the present work, we have investigated the oil and water wetting properties of strontium titanate nanoparticles. The as-synthesized nanoparticles were coated on the stainless steel mesh to investigate wetting properties. The coated mesh was found to have superhydrophilic and superoleophilic behavior with a contact angle value of nearly zero degree for both water as well as oil. Further underwater oil contact angle was measured, showing underwater superoleophobic behavior of the coated mesh. The underlying mechanism was studied for the wetting behavior of strontium titanate coated mesh. The coated mesh was then utilized for the gravity-driven separation of different oil/water mixtures. The separation mesh can be used multiple times showing its antifouling property along with recyclability. Further, a capillary pressure based model was developed to explain the wettability contrast for water and oil as well as separation of the two liquid phases on passing through the separation device. The approach here used for fabrication is applicable for large-area fabrication making it convenient and cost-effective towards oil/water separation at large scale.

Abstract

Although the predictors of the timely initiation of complementary feeding are well-known elsewhere, there is less awareness of the topic in Nepal. The current study was undertaken to identify the correlates of timely initiation of complementary feeding among children aged 6–23 months. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Rupandehi district, Nepal. A total of 155 mother-child pairs were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Logistic regression with adjustment for potential confounders was employed to examine the independent association between risk factors and the timely initiation of complementary feeding. Fewer than 3 in 5 children aged 6–23 months received complementary feeding at the recommended time. Literate mothers and a maternal occupation in the service or business sectors were found to be associated with complementary feeding at 6 months. In addition, child characteristics such as birth order, male children, and those fed micronutrients were also more likely to have been received complementary feeding at 6 months than their counterparts. Maternal education and occupation, and child characteristics such as, birth order, male gender, and micronutrient consumption, which are correlates of the timely initiation of complementary feeding, suggest that the Nepalese Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) programme should target these predictors while designing preventive strategies.

Abstract

Vapomechanical actuation triggered through chemical vapors by employing soft smart materials is the most recent and less-explored area of actuators research having powerful applications in the field of chemical sensors/detectors. A tubular shaped actuator driven by chloroform vapors based on graphene-polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite/gold bilayers has been realized. The tubular shape of actuator is transformed into a planar sheet within about 1.7 s time under the exposure of chloroform vapors with vapor pressure of 57 kPa. The shape switching time of this actuator varies linearly with vapor pressure of chloroform. These vapomechanical actuators may find potential uses in the development of smart chemical sensors which are cheap, easy to use and do not require any electrical power for their operations.

Abstract

Herein, we report an intelligent mesh for dual mode reversible separation of immiscible heavy/light oil water mixture and both oil-in-water as well as water-in-oil emulsions. ZnO nanowires coated stainless steel mesh with pore size 50 μm and 10 μm were fabricated successfully. The wettability of mesh can be reversibly switched between “oil-blocking” and “water-blocking” modes by alternatively annealing the smart mesh at about 210 °C for about 20 min in presence of poly (dimethyl siloxane) vapors and at 300 °C for 25 min in air, respectively. The “oil-blocking” mode was suited for the efficient separation of light oil/water mixture and oil-in-water emulsion, while “water-blocking” mode was found to be suitable for the separation of heavy oil/water mixture and water-in-oil emulsion. This work provides a simple, cost effective, eco-friendly and time saving approach applicable for separation of both form of oil/water mixture, free as well as surfactant stabilized emulsions, irrespective of the types of oil involved. The separation efficiency of the mesh was found to be more than 99% for free as well as emulsified mixtures. Even after cyclic usage in both modes alternatively, the separation efficiency of the mesh remained relatively unchanged, showing antifouling property and excellent recyclability of the mesh.

Abstract

The in-situ and rapid detection of live and dead bacteria is essential for human and environmental care. It has become one of the biggest needs in the biological and medical sciences to prevent infectious diseases, which usually occur in hospitals and field clinics. In the current scenario, antibiotic resistance is one of the severe public health problems, which requires a quick and efficient solution. Here, we report a facile sensitive, portable, user-friendly, cost-effective and time saving approach for detection of live, dead and drug-resistant bacteria. The endogenous H2S evolution was targeted to differentiate between live and dead as well as antibiotic resistant bacteria. The silver nanorods (AgNRs) arrays sensors were fabricated by glancing angle deposition technique. The colorimetric and water wettability features of as-synthesized AgNRs are found to be highly sensitive and selective for H2S. E. coli. P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis and S. aureus were used as a model organism in this study. All the bacteria were found to produce H2S by their metabolism process. In order to detect the antibiotic resistant E. coli were grown in the presence of different concentration of ampicillin in Luria broth. A drastic visible change in color as well as wetting of AgNRs array was observed. To make the technique easy, a user-friendly and field deployable mobile app ‘Colorimetric Detector’ was developed. This technique takes only 4–6 h whereas the conventional methods need around 24 h for the same. This dual mode facile and, inexpensive method can be easily scaled up in the field of diagnostics.

Abstract

Magnetism without d-orbital electrons seems to be unrealistic; however, recent observations of magnetism in non-magnetic oxides, such as ZnO, HfO2, and MgO, have opened new avenues in the field of magnetism. Magnetism exhibited by these oxides is known as d° ferromagnetism, as these oxides either have completely filled or unfilled d-/f-orbitals. This magnetism is believed to occur due to polarization induced by p-orbitals. Magnetic polarization in these oxides arises due to vacancies, the excitation of trapped spin in the triplet state. The presence of vacancies at the surface and subsurface also affects the magnetic behavior of these oxides. In the present review, origins of magnetism in magnesium oxide are discussed to obtain understanding of d° ferromagnetism.

Abstract

Sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) through electrocatalytic reduction to produce high-value industrial precursors, such as CO, is a promising avenue for sustainable development. Copper–indium is a non-noble metal catalyst with high activity towards CO production. However, there is a lack of control of parameters which enhance the selective CO production on copper–indium oxide. Here, the role of oxygen vacancy (VO) defects in the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERC) to selective CO production is reported. CuO/In2O3 nanocomposites with different VO concentrations were synthesized under different synthesis environments. CuO/In2O3 nanocomposites prepared in an argon environment exhibited higher VO concentrations as compared to nanocomposites prepared in an air environment. DFT calculations demonstrated that the activation barrier decreases from 0.48 eV to 0.31 eV for the nanocomposite having a higher VO concentration, thus exhibiting a CO yield with 85% faradaic efficiency at −0.895 V vs. RHE, suggesting that VO defects serve as the active sites for CO2 adsorption. This study provides a novel route for the enhancement in selective ERC to CO by inducing the optimum concentration of VO in CuO/In2O3 nanocomposites.

Abstract

Aim To evaluate the impact of oral health literacy (OHL) on the periodontal health among low-income-group workers of dental institutes. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 137 class III and IV workers of dental college. Data collection was done by using a customized pro forma including demographics, REALD-30 for calculating OHL, and items on oral hygiene habits like toothpaste use, brushing frequency, and any other oral hygiene aid. Following which periodontal health status was determined, which was categorized into severe, moderate, and mild periodontitis (health). The analysis was done using the SPSS 11.5. Periodontal health status was associated with OHL scores, oral hygiene habits, and demographics using the chi-square test. The statistical significance level was set at 5% level. Results Among the 137 subjects, 25 participants reported health/mild periodontitis, 53 had moderate periodontitis, and 59 had severe periodontitis. Low OHL was observed in 52.5% and only 13.8% had high OHL. The participants who had low OHL, 56.94% (n = 41), were having severe disease, while the subjects who had better OHL, only 21.05% (n = 4) were found to have severe disease. Conclusion The people with low socioeconomic classes can be reached effectively if the community involvement concept is used through the workers of dental institutions. But first efforts should be made to improve the OHL of these workers. Clinical significance Improving OHL can be of great help to the clinicians and the community health workers because it helps them to make patient adherent to the treatment and the medications prescribed to them. Periodontitis affects people with low socioeconomic status and in the present study it was class III and IV workers. Improving OHL of this population will decrease the oral disease burden of India.

Abstract

In this study, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based field-deployable platform has been explored for early detection and distinction of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). A highly optimized silver nanorods array, fabricated using glancing angle deposition technique was used as SERS substrate. Distinct signature peaks for varying concentrations (102 to 106 copies/mL) were identified in five different HIV-1 subtypes (A, B, C, D, and CRF02_AG). Binding of viruses directly with Ag nanorods without using antibodies or intermediate reagents is shown. The purified viruses were spiked in water and healthy plasma to capture pure HIV-1 peaks. Distinct peaks were also captured for the X4 and R5 tropic strains suggesting tropism based detection. The above data was further confirmed and analyzed statistically using a multivariate tool. Thus, the present study indicates the ability of the SERS platform to detect and differentiate the HIV-1 virus implying its further validation using clinical specimens and isolates.

Abstract

Techniques to probe molecular mechanistic events occurring at a single catalytic site of multi-subunit enzymes in real time are few and are still under development. Here time-resolved information is extracted from measurements of the extensive oxygen exchange that occurs at an intermediate stage of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis during photophosphorylation by chloroplast thylakoids. A stochastic process-based approach for modeling exchange reactions is formulated that provides a physical basis for the kinetic theory. Compatible with the assumptions made in such a model of randomness, the formulation is shown to lead to a Poisson-type theory that enables kinetic analysis of oxygen-exchange data and offers novel physical insights. Parameters such as the apparent rate constant of exchange and the average lifetime of the exchanging intermediates during the synthesis of ATP by the chloroplast F1FO-ATP synthase have been determined over a 5000-fold range of ADP concentration. Experimental isotopomer distributions of [18O]ATP at high (0.5 mM), intermediate (10 μM), and low (0.2 μM) ADP concentrations have been quantified and compared to expected distributions from the theory. The observed distributions are shown to closely match the predicted distributions. A wealth of novel mechanistic insights such as the number of sites/pathways of oxygen exchange, the order of substrate binding steps at the enzyme catalytic site, and regulation of the process of energy coupling have been deduced, and the results are interpreted with the help of available high-resolution X-ray structures. The various biological implications for models of energy coupling have been discussed. Permutation of oxygen ligands about the phosphorus center is proposed as a possible and general but not well-recognized mechanism for oxygen exchange that is consistent with the principal results of this work, and several suggestions for future research are offered.

Abstract

Various properties of different optimized organic solvents and graphene oxide-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) films, PEDOT:PSS/Si heterojunctions, and solar cells have been studied in detail. The conductivity of PEDOT:PSS films was enhanced by three orders of magnitude with graphene oxide whereas all films remain highly transparent (>85%) in the visible region. The partial removal of PSS and the formation of conducting PEDOT-connected networks contribute to the enhanced electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS films. The removal of PSS was also confirmed by CAFM measurements. Solar cell fabricated with ethylene glycol-doped PEDOT:PSS film showed a maximum power conversion efficiency as compared to other solvents-doped PEDOT:PSS film. The highly conducting and transparent material can be used in various future optoelectronic devices.

Abstract

Dengue is a serious global health concern especially in tropical and subtropical countries. About 2.5 billion of the world's population is at risk for dengue infection. Early diagnosis is the key to prevent the deterioration of health of the patient to severe illness. Laboratory diagnosis of dengue is essential for providing appropriate supportive treatment to dengue patients with febrile illness, which is difficult to diagnose clinically. Here, we demonstrate surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based diagnosis of dengue virus in clinical blood samples collected from total of 102 subjects. All of the samples were well characterized by conventional NS1 antigen and IgM antibody ELISA kits. The silver nanorods array fabricated by glancing angle deposition technique were employed as SERS substrates. A small amount of patient blood serum (5 μL) was taken for analysis and the report was prepared within a minute. SERS spectra of pure NS1 protein as well as spiked in serum was also recorded separately. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed as the statistical tool to differentiate dengue positive, dengue negative, and healthy subjects on the basis of their respective SERS spectra. This method provides a sensitive, rapid, and field deployable diagnosis of dengue at the early stage (within 5 days of the onset of symptoms).

Abstract

In this paper, we report about the preparation of novel nanocomposite films based on graphene and poly (3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). It has been observed that the prepared nanocomposite material shows excellent electrical conductivity of 60 S/cm and highly transparent (>90%) in the visible region. The resistivity of graphene and PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite films decreases as temperature increases, which is a characteristic behavior of semiconductors. The conductivity of nanocomposite film is enhanced by two orders of magnitude as compared to pristine PEDOT:PSS film. Au/graphene-PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite/n-Si/In-Ga diodes are fabricated and it exhibited rectifying behavior.

Abstract

Biopotential signals are extremely useful in assessing organ function and diagnosing diseases. This study proposes a highly flexible, conductive, antibacterial, and self-adhesive silver nanorods (AgNRs) embedded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dry electrode for long-term electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring with portable instrumentation. We use a unique glancing angle deposition method to fabricate AgNRs and embedded them in a biocompatible PDMS matrix. These electrodes do not cause skin irritation even after several hours of use and work efficiently without skin preparation. These AgNRs-PDMS electrodes have an electrical resistivity of 10−7 Ω m and a skin contact impedance of 93.9 ± 0.7 kΩ to 6.2 ± 3.7 kΩ for frequencies ranging from 40 Hz to 1 kHz, which is around 18% less than most conventional Ag/AgCl wet electrodes. The fabricated electrodes have a signal-to-noise ratio of 12 dB, comparable to that of a conventional Ag/AgCl electrode. A signal acquisition circuit is designed to detect ECG signals combined with proposed dry electrodes and a wireless monitoring device. Finally, real-time ECG signals are displayed on a mobile phone via an Android application. These AgNRs-PDMS dry electrodes, in combination with the portable wireless device, may be used in future clinical studies that require real-time and long-term ECG monitoring.
