Purpose This study assessed the benefits of quality threshold (QT) implementation for liver shear wave elastography (SWE) in children during free breathing. Methods The QT, which adjusts the SWE map display based on shear wave quality, was set at 55%. Phantom measurements (PMs) were taken with a fixed probe using QT (termed PM-1); a moving probe without QT (PM-2); and a moving probe with QT (PM-3). Each measurement was subjected to random samplings of various sizes. Clinical measurements (CMs) were obtained from children with biliary atresia using following protocols: CM-1, manually defined regions of interest (ROIs); CM-2, default ROIs without QT; and CM-3, default ROIs with QT. Elasticity measurements were compared across fibrosis grades, and color patterns on the SWE maps were analyzed. Results In the phantom experiments, the moving probe produced lower elasticity measurements; this difference decreased upon QT application. With the moving probe, random sampling indicated fewer interquartile range-to-median ratios exceeding 30% upon QT application (4% vs. 14% when five values were sampled, P=0.004). In clinical experiments, QT improved the differentiation of fibrosis grade in patients over 5 years old, with a significant difference between moderate and severe fibrosis (P=0.004). Abstract Dysphagia, a disorder affecting the ability to swallow, has a high prevalence among the older adults and can lead to serious health complications. Therefore, early detection of dysphagia is important. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a newly developed deep learning model that analyzes syllable-segmented data for diagnosing dysphagia, an aspect not addressed in prior studies. The audio data of daily conversations were collected from 16 patients with dysphagia and 24 controls. The presence of dysphagia was determined by videofluoroscopic swallowing study. The data were segmented into syllables using a speech-to-text model and analyzed with a convolutional neural network to perform binary classification between the dysphagia patients and control group. The proposed model in this study was assessed in two different aspects. Firstly, with syllable-segmented analysis, it demonstrated a diagnostic accuracy of 0.794 for dysphagia, a sensitivity of 0.901, a specificity of 0.687, a positive predictive value of 0.742, and a negative predictive value of 0.874. Secondly, at the individual level, it achieved an overall accuracy of 0.900 and area under the curve of 0.953. This research highlights the potential of deep learning modal as an early, non-invasive, and simple method for detecting dysphagia in everyday environments.

Abstract Responding to threats in the real world demands a sophisticated orchestration of freeze and flight behaviors dynamically modulated by the neural activity. While the medial prefrontal cortex-basolateral amygdala (mPFC-BLA) network is known to play a pivotal role in coordinating these responses, the mechanisms underlying its population dynamics remain vague. As traditional Pavlovian fear conditioning models fall short in encapsulating the breadth of natural escape behaviors, we introduce a novel dataset to bridge this gap, capturing the defensive strategies of mice against a spider robot in a natural-like environment. The adaptive escape behaviors and concurrent mPFC-BLA activity in eight mice were monitored using wireless local field potential (LFP) and video recordings, both individually and in groups. Our data offers a unique avenue to explore the neural dynamics that govern fear- and vigilance-induced threat responses in isolated and social contexts. Supplemented by detailed methodologies and validation, the dataset allows for the analysis of the transient neural oscillatory dynamics, with prospective implications for the fields of neuroscience, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

Abstract Among micro-scale imaging technologies of materials, X-ray micro-computed tomography has evolved as most popular choice, even though it is restricted to limited field-of-views and long acquisition times. With recent progress in small-angle X-ray scattering these downsides of conventional absorption-based computed tomography have been overcome, allowing complete analysis of the micro-architecture for samples in the dimension of centimetres in a matter of minutes. These advances have been triggered through improved X-ray optical elements and acquisition methods. However, it has not yet been shown how to effectively transfer this small-angle X-ray scattering data into a numerical model capable of accurately predicting the actual material properties. Here, a method is presented to numerically predict mechanical properties of a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer based on imaging data with a voxel-size of 100 μm corresponding to approximately fifteen times the fibre diameter. This extremely low resolution requires a completely new way of constructing the material’s constitutive law based on the fibre orientation, the X-ray scattering anisotropy, and the X-ray scattering intensity. The proposed method combining the advances in X-ray imaging and the presented material model opens for an accurate tensile modulus prediction for volumes of interest between three to six orders of magnitude larger than those conventional carbon fibre orientation image-based models can cover.

Abstract Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity, and paraspinal muscles play an important role as stabilizers of the spinal curve. In this prospective study, we compared elasticity changes in the paraspinal muscles of adolescent patients with scoliosis after surgery or bracing. Elasticity was measured on the concave and convex sides of the paraspinal muscles at the apex of the curve at the beginning of treatment and 6 and 12 months after treatment. Two new crane fly species, Dicranomyia (Erostrata) jejuensis sp. nov. and D. (E.) koreana sp. nov., from Korea are described on the basis of morphology and mitochondrial COI sequences. DNA barcode sequences for other four D. (Erostrata) species from Korea are also provided for the first time. The identification key for all known D. (Erostrata) species is presented.

Abstract Background There have been no studies concerning the complications or benefits of cholecystectomy in ovarian cancer. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the outcomes of cholecystectomy performed during various time periods of the disease course and suggest a management strategy for cholecystectomy in ovarian cancer. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with advanced ovarian cancer who underwent cholecystectomy during the cytoreductive surgery from 2009 to 2020. Cholecystectomy was primarily indicated when the gallbladder and surrounding structures were considered to have metastatic tumor invasion. If the final pathologic results showed free of malignant tumor, patients were placed into the no-infiltration group. Clinical outcomes including the recurrence rate and complications were analyzed. Results A total of 62 patients underwent cholecystectomy, 48 of whom (77.4%) underwent cholecystectomy during primary or interval debulking surgery, whereas 14 (22.6%) underwent cholecystectomy during the follow-up period (five with benign disease and 9 with disease recurrence). Among the patients, 32 (51.6%) patients were included in the no-infiltration group in the final pathology. There were no complications observed in the no-infiltration group (n = 32). Seven (78%) of the nine patients who received cholecystectomy for disease recurrence had metastatic disease in the porta-hepatis or lesser sac at the time of primary surgery. However, no recurrent lesions were observed around the porta-hepatis in patients who received cholecystectomy during primary treatment. Conclusion Considering the safety of the procedure, as well as the risk of disease recurrence or cholecystitis, a cholecystectomy can be offered to patients with ovarian cancer who have metastatic lesions around the gallbladder and porta-hepatis at the time of primary surgery.

Korean wooden architectural heritage buildings are often damaged by termites, and climate change is expected to exacerbate the problem. To prevent termite damage, it is necessary to identify the habitat range and activity period of termites. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the ecological characteristics of Reticulitermes speratus, the dominant termite species in South Korea, past termite damage records of wooden architectural heritage buildings, and climate data (2000–2019). We determined that termite infestations could potentially occur in 98.5% of the total studied area, except for a few mountainous regions in South Korea. In addition, termites were active for an average of 209 days per year. The habitat range of termites appears to be gradually expanding, possibly as a result of a combination of anthropogenic interventions, rising temperatures caused by climate change, and the ecological characteristics of termites. In the future, it is imperative to implement enhanced preventive and active termite control measures to preserve the original wooden architectural heritage buildings of South Korea.

IntroductionThe pathogenesis of chronic chest pain after cardiac surgery has not been determinate. If left untreated, postoperative sternal pain reduces the quality of life and patient satisfaction with cardiac surgery. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of chest inflammation on postoperative pain, risk factors for chronic pain after cardiac surgery and to explore how chest reconstruction was associated with the intensity of pain.MethodsThe authors performed a study of acute and chronic thoracic pain after cardiac surgery in patients with and without sternal infection and compared different techniques for chest reconstruction. 42 high-risk patients for the development of mediastinitis were included. Patients with mediastinitis received chest reconstruction (group 1). Their demographics and risk factors were matched with no-infection patients with chest reconstruction (group 2) and subjects who underwent conventional sternal closure (group 3). Chronic pain was assessed by the numeric rating scale after surgery.ResultsThe assessment of the incidence and intensity of chest pain at 3 months post-surgery demonstrated that 14 out of 42 patients across all groups still experienced chronic pain. Specifically, in group 1 with sternal infection five patients had mild pain, while one patient experienced mild pain in group 2, and eight patients in group 3. Also, follow-up results indicated that the highest pain score was in group 3. While baseline levels of cytokines were increased among patients with sternal infection, at discharge only the level of interleukin 6 remained high compared to no infection groups. Compared to conventional closure, after chest reconstruction, we found better healing scores at 3-month follow-up and a higher percentage of patients with the complete sternal union.ConclusionsOverall, 14 out of 42 patients have chronic pain after cardiac surgery. The intensity of the pain in mediastinitis patients significantly decreased at 3 months follow-up after chest reconstruction. Thus, post-surgery mediastinitis is not a determining factor for development the chronic chest pain. There is no correlation between cytokines levels and pain score except interleukin 6 which remains elevated for a long time after treatment. Correlation between sternal healing score and chronic chest pain was demonstrated.

Abstract The generation of tailored light fields with spatially controlled intensity and phase distribution is essential in many areas of science and application, while creating such patterns remotely has recently defined a key challenge. Here, we present a fiber-compatible concept for the remote generation of complex multi-foci three-dimensional intensity patterns with adjusted relative phases between individual foci. By extending the well-known Huygens principle, we demonstrate, in simulations and experiments, that our interference-based approach enables controlling of both intensity and phase of individual focal points in an array of spots distributed in all three spatial directions. Holograms were implemented using 3D nano-printing on planar substrates and optical fibers, showing excellent agreement between design and implemented structures. In addition to planar substrates, holograms were also generated on modified single-mode fibers, creating intensity distributions consisting of about 200 individual foci distributed over multiple image planes. The presented scheme yields an innovative pathway for phase-controlled 3D digital holography over remote distances, yielding an enormous potential application in fields such as quantum technology, life sciences, bioanalytics and telecommunications. Overall, all fields requiring precise excitation of higher-order optical resonances, including nanophotonics, fiber optics and waveguide technology, will benefit from the concept.

Abstract Colposcopy is a test performed to detect precancerous lesions of cervical cancer. Since cervical cancer progresses slowly, finding and treating precancerous lesions helps prevent cervical cancer. In particular, it is clinically important to detect high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) that require surgical treatment among precancerous lesions of cervix. There have been several studies using convolutional neural network (CNN) for classifying colposcopic images. However, no studies have been reported on using the segmentation technique to detect HSIL. In present study, we aimed to examine whether the accuracy of a CNN model in detecting HSIL from colposcopic images can be improved when segmentation information for acetowhite epithelium is added. Without segmentation information, ResNet-18, 50, and 101 achieved classification accuracies of 70.2%, 66.2%, and 69.3%, respectively. The experts classified the same test set with accuracies of 74.6% and 73.0%. After adding segmentation information of acetowhite epithelium to the original images, the classification accuracies of ResNet-18, 50, and 101 improved to 74.8%, 76.3%, and 74.8%, respectively. We demonstrated that the HSIL detection accuracy improved by adding segmentation information to the CNN model, and the improvement in accuracy was consistent across different ResNets.

Biliary atresia is a rare but significant cause of neonatal cholestasis. An early and accurate diagnosis is important for proper management and prognosis. To diagnose biliary atresia, various imaging studies using ultrasonography, MRI, hepatobiliary scans, and cholangiography can be performed, although ultrasonography is more important for initial imaging studies. In this article, we review the findings of biliary atresia from various imaging modalities, including ultrasonography, MRI, hepatobiliary scans, and cholangiography. The known key imaging features include abnormal gallbladder size and shape, periportal thickening visible as a ‘triangular cord’ sign, invisible common bile duct, increased hepatic arterial flow, and combined anomalies. Aside from the imaging findings of biliary atresia, we also reviewed the diagnostic difficulty in the early neonatal period and the role of imaging in predicting hepatic fibrosis. We hope that this review will aid in the diagnosis of biliary atresia.

The honey bee, a crucial organism that provides ecological and economic value to humans, is currently facing threats from various environmental factors including pesticides. Numerous studies have been conducted to demonstrate the risks associated with neonicotinoid pesticides, but research on their occurrence in actual field conditions has not been identified. Therefore, in this study, we observed changes in honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies located near rice cultivation areas as they progressed beyond the rice pesticide application period. Furthermore, we collected honey bees exposed to the clothianidin and analyzed their stress-related gene expression. The results showed that the foraging behavior of honey bee colonies located near rice cultivation areas did not exhibit significant differences between the treatment sites (Cheongyang and Gimje) and the control site (Wanju) during the experimental period. However, it was observed that the expression levels of stress-related genes in honey bees collected from the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control. Most of the stress-related genes were associated with detoxification processes in response to pesticides. As a result, pesticide treatment in proximity to rice cultivation areas did not cause direct damage to honey bees but had an indirect impact, suggesting the potential for ongoing chronic damage.

The disposal of nuclear waste represents a paramount concern for human safety, and the corrosion resistance of containers within the disposal environment stands as a critical factor in ensuring the integrity of such waste containment systems. In this report, the corrosion behavior of copper canisters was monitored in Olkiluoto-simulated/-procured groundwater (South Korea) with different temperatures. The exposure of copper in the procured groundwater at 70 °C revealed a 3.7-fold increase in corrosion vulnerability compared with room temperature conditions, with a current density of 12.7 μA/cm2. During a three-week immersion test in a controlled 70 °C chamber, the canister in the Korean groundwater maintained a constant weight. In contrast, its counterpart in the simulated groundwater revealed continuous weight loss, indicating heightened corrosion. An X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified corrosion byproducts, specifically Cu2Cl3(OH) and calcite (CaCO3), in the simulated groundwater, confirming its corrosive nature. The initial impedance analysis revealed distinct differences: Korean groundwater exhibits high pore resistance and diffusion effects, while the simulated groundwater shows low pore resistance. Consequently, the corrosion of copper canisters in the Korean environment is deemed relatively stable because of significant differences in ion concentrations.

This study examined the impact of vibration-assisted drilling (VAD) on hole quality and residual stress in Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Extra Low Interstitials) material. Ti-6Al-4V ELI possesses excellent mechanical properties but presents challenges in machining, including chip evacuation, burr formation, and elevated cutting temperatures. VAD, particularly low-frequency vibration-assisted drilling (LF-VAD), has been explored as a potential solution to address these issues. The research compares LF-VAD with conventional drilling (CD) under various cutting and cooling conditions. LF-VAD exhibits higher maximum thrust forces under specific conditions, which result in accelerated tool wear. However, it also demonstrates lower RMS (root mean square) forces compared to CD, offering better control over chip formation, reduced burr formation, and improved surface roughness within the hole. Furthermore, LF-VAD generates greater compressive residual stresses on the hole’s inner surface compared to CD, suggesting enhanced fatigue performance. These findings indicate that LF-VAD holds promise for improving the hole’s surface characteristics, fatigue life, and overall component durability in Ti-6Al-4V machining applications.

Clinical observations have revealed that non-resolving low-grade inflammation is linked to the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory diseases, for example arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Interestingly, low levels of circulating lipopolysaccharides (LPS) derived from the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria appear to be one of the primary causes of persistent low-grade inflammation. The inner surface of the blood vessels is lined with endothelial cells; therefore, even low levels of circulating LPS can directly activate these cells and elicit specific cellular responses, such as an increase in the expression levels of cell adhesion molecules and proinflammatory mediators. In endothelial cells, LPS exposure results in an inflammatory response through activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinases. Cynarin, a phytochemical found in artichokes, has several pharmacological properties against endothelial inflammation. In the present study, we discovered that cynarin suppressed the LPS-induced increase in the expression levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and proinflammatory mediators such as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β in EA.hy926 cells. Further, cynarin inhibited the activation of p38 and NF-κB pathways by inducing the negative regulator mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase 3 (MKP-3) in LPS-stimulated EA.hy926 cells. In conclusion, cynarin alleviates inflammation by upregulating MKP-3, a negative regulator of p38 and NF-κB, and it may be a therapeutic option for treating endothelial inflammation-related diseases.

Abstract Background The recent explosion of cancer genomics provides extensive information about mutations and gene expression changes in cancer. However, most of the identified gene mutations are not clinically utilized. It remains uncertain whether the presence of a certain genetic alteration will affect treatment response. Conventional statistics have limitations for causal inferences and are hard to gain sufficient power in genomic datasets. Here, we developed and evaluated a C-search algorithm for searching the causal genes that maximize the effect of the treatment. Methods The algorithm was developed based on the potential outcome framework and Bayesian posterior update. The precision of the algorithm was validated using a simulation dataset. The algorithm was implemented to a cBioPortal dataset. The genes discovered by the algorithm were externally validated within CancerSCAN screening data from Samsung Medical Center. Results Simulation data analysis showed that the C-search algorithm was able to identify nine causal genes out of ten. The C-search algorithm shows the discovery rate rapidly increasing until the 1500 data instances. Meanwhile, the log-rank test shows a slower increase in performance. The C-search algorithm was able to suggest nine causal genes from the cBioPortal Metabric dataset. Treating the patients with the causal genes is associated with better survival outcome in both the cBioPortal dataset and the CancerSCAN dataset which is used for external validation. Conclusions Our C-search algorithm demonstrated better performance to identify causal effects of the genes than multiple log-rank test analysis especially within a limited number of data. The result suggests that the C-search can discover the causal genes from various genetic datasets, where the number of samples is limited compared to the number of variables.

Abstract Microstructural information over an entire sample is important to understand the macroscopic behaviour of materials. X-ray scattering tensor tomography facilitates the investigation of the microstructural organisation in statistically large sample volumes. However, established acquisition protocols based on scanning small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray grating interferometry inherently require long scan times even with highly brilliant X-ray sources. Recent developments in X-ray diffractive optics towards circular pattern arrays enable fast single-shot acquisition of the sample scattering properties with 2D omnidirectional sensitivity. X-ray scattering tensor tomography with the use of this circular grating array has been demonstrated. We propose here simple yet inherently rapid acquisition protocols for X-ray scattering tensor tomography leveraging on these new optical elements. Results from both simulation and experimental data, supported by a null space analysis, suggest that the proposed acquisition protocols are not only rapid but also corroborate that sufficient information for the accurate volumetric reconstruction of the scattering properties is provided. The proposed acquisition protocols will build the basis for rapid inspection and/or time-resolved tensor tomography of the microstructural organisation over an extended field of view.

Abstract Background Efforts to reduce the radiation dose have continued steadily, with new reconstruction techniques. Recently, image denoising algorithms using artificial neural networks, termed deep learning reconstruction (DLR), have been applied to CT image reconstruction to overcome the drawbacks of iterative reconstruction (IR). The purpose of our study was to compare the objective and subjective image quality of DLR and IR on pediatric abdomen and chest CT images. Methods This retrospective study included pediatric body CT images from February 2020 to October 2020, performed on 51 patients (34 boys and 17 girls; age 1–18 years). Non-contrast chest CT (n = 16), contrast-enhanced chest CT (n = 12), and contrast-enhanced abdomen CT (n = 23) images were included. Standard 50% adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASIR-V) images were compared to images with 100% ASIR-V and DLR at medium and high strengths. Attenuation, noise, contrast to noise ratio (CNR), and signal to noise (SNR) measurements were performed. Overall image quality, artifacts, and noise were subjectively assessed by two radiologists using a four-point scale (superior, average, suboptimal, and unacceptable). A phantom scan was performed including the dose range of the clinical images used in our study, and the noise power spectrum (NPS) was calculated. Quantitative and qualitative parameters were compared using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni correction and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results DLR had better CNR and SNR than 50% ASIR-V in both pediatric chest and abdomen CT images. When compared with 50% ASIR-V, high strength DLR was associated with noise reduction in non-contrast chest CT (33.0%), contrast-enhanced chest CT (39.6%), and contrast-enhanced abdomen CT (38.7%) with increases in CNR at 149.1%, 105.8%, and 53.1% respectively. The on-chip detection of fluorescent light is essential for many bioanalytical and life-science related applications. Here, the optofluidic light cage consisting of a sparse array of micrometer encircling a hollow core represents an innovative concept, particularly for on-chip waveguide-based spectroscopy. In the present work, we demonstrate the potential of the optofluidic light cage concept in the context of integrated on-chip fluorescence spectroscopy. Specifically, we show that fluorescent light from a dye-doped aqueous solution generated in the core of a nanoprinted dual-ring light cage can be efficiently captured and guided to the waveguide ports. Notably, the fluorescence collection occurs predominantly in the fundamental mode, a property that distinguishes it from evanescent field-based waveguide detection schemes that favor collection in higher-order modes. Through exploiting the flexibility of waveguide design and 3D nanoprinting, both excitation and emission have been localized in the high transmission domains of the fundamental core mode. Fast diffusion, detection limits comparable to bulk measurements, and the potential of this approach in terms of device integration were demonstrated. Together with previous results on absorption spectroscopy, the achievements presented here suggest that the optofluidic light cage concept defines a novel photonic platform for integrated on-chip spectroscopic devices and real-time sensors compatible with both the fiber circuitry and microfluidics. Applications in areas such as bioanalytics and environmental sciences are conceivable, while more sophisticated applications such as nanoparticle tracking analysis and integrated Raman spectroscopy could be envisioned.

The marine natural product ianthelliformisamine C is a bis-cinnamido substituted spermine derivative that exhibits intrinsic antimicrobial properties and can enhance the action of doxycycline towards the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. As part of a study to explore the structure–activity requirements of these activities, we have synthesized a set of analogues that vary in the presence/absence of methoxyl group and bromine atoms and in the polyamine chain length. Intrinsic antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans was observed for only the longest polyamine chain examples of non-brominated analogues while all examples bearing either one or two bromine atoms were active. Weak to no activity was typically observed towards Gram-negative bacteria, with exceptions being the longest polyamine chain examples 13f, 14f and 16f against Escherichia coli (MIC 1.56, 7.2 and 5.3 µM, respectively). Many of these longer polyamine-chain analogues also exhibited cytotoxic and/or red blood cell hemolytic properties, diminishing their potential as antimicrobial lead compounds. Two of the non-toxic, non-halogenated analogues, 13b and 13d, exhibited a strong ability to enhance the action of doxycycline against P. aeruginosa, with >64-fold and >32-fold enhancement, respectively. These results suggest that any future efforts to optimize the antibiotic-enhancing properties of cinnamido-polyamines should explore a wider range of aromatic ring substituents that do not include bromine or methoxyl groups.

Due to the complex structure and function of the kidneys, the mechanism of kidney disease is unclear. In particular, transcriptomics approaches at the bulk level are unable to differentiate primary autonomous responses, which lead to disease development, from secondary cell non-autonomous responses. Single-cell analysis techniques can overcome the limitations inherent in the measurement of heterogeneous cell populations and clarify the central issues in kidney biology and disease pathogenesis. Single-cell sequencing helps in identifying disease-related biomarkers and pathways, stratifying patients, and deciding on appropriate treatment methods. Here we review a variety of single-cell analysis techniques and single-cell transcriptomics studies performed in the field of nephrology. Moreover, we discuss the future prospects of single-cell analysis-based precision medicine in nephrology.

Abstract Strong focusing on diffraction-limited spots is essential for many photonic applications and is particularly relevant for optical trapping; however, all currently used approaches fail to simultaneously provide flexible transportation of light, straightforward implementation, compatibility with waveguide circuitry, and strong focusing. Here, we demonstrate the design and 3D nanoprinting of an ultrahigh numerical aperture meta-fibre for highly flexible optical trapping. Taking into account the peculiarities of the fibre environment, we implemented an ultrathin meta-lens on the facet of a modified single-mode optical fibre via direct laser writing, leading to a diffraction-limited focal spot with a record-high numerical aperture of up to NA ≈ 0.9. The unique capabilities of this flexible, cost-effective, bio- and fibre-circuitry-compatible meta-fibre device were demonstrated by optically trapping microbeads and bacteria for the first time with only one single-mode fibre in combination with diffractive optics. Our study highlights the relevance of the unexplored but exciting field of meta-fibre optics to a multitude of fields, such as bioanalytics, quantum technology and life sciences.

Abstract In this study, silicon (Si) was doped on a tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) coating and the tribological characteristics of the resulting Si-doped diamond-like carbon (DLC; a-C:Si:H) were investigated against a SUJ2 ball. The Si fraction in the coating was varied from 0 to ~ 20 at.% by increasing the trimethylsilane gas flow rate during filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition. The coefficient of friction (CoF) showed no obvious change when the Si fraction was less than ~ 7 at.%. However, after Si doping, it significantly decreased when the Si fraction was greater than ~ 8 at.%. The running-in period also decreased to less than 1000 cycles after Si doping. The rapid formation of Si-rich debris and transfer layer led to the fabrication of a low-friction tribofilm, which was induced by the tribochemical reaction with moisture under ambient conditions. When the Si fraction was ~ 17 at.%, the lowest CoF of less than 0.05 was obtained. Further Si doping beyond the critical point led to the destruction of the film because of reduced hardness.

Despite having high polyphenolic phytochemicals and functional components, apple pomace (AP) is often discarded in landfills, leading to pollution. The study aimed to find a sustainable application for AP in Greek yogurt fortified with AP syrup (APS). Physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant properties were analyzed for APS (APS0.00, APS1.25, APS2.50, APS3.75, APS5.00). As the AP content in the syrup increased, moisture content, titratable acidity, and viscosity significantly increased (p < 0.05). The total polyphenols and flavonoid content of APS increased with increasing AP content. In Greek yogurt fortified with APS (APY), reducing sugar content (0.55 mg/mL to 0.71 mg/mL) significantly increased with fermentation time and AP content, whereas pH level (6.85 to 4.28) decreased. The antioxidant activities by DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, and reducing power were also significantly increased with the AP content and fermentation time. In the consumer acceptance test of APY, APY1.25 had significantly high scores in overall acceptance, taste acceptance, and aftertaste acceptance with purchase intent (p < 0.05). The Greek yogurt fortified with APS as functional food had improved antioxidant properties and consumer acceptance, suggesting the possibility of developing sustainable AP products.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is widely used in autonomous vehicles to obtain precise 3D information about surrounding road environments. However, under bad weather conditions, such as rain, snow, and fog, LiDAR-detection performance is reduced. This effect has hardly been verified in actual road environments. In this study, tests were conducted with different precipitation levels (10, 20, 30, and 40 mm/h) and fog visibilities (50, 100, and 150 m) on actual roads. Square test objects (60 × 60 cm2) made of retroreflective film, aluminum, steel, black sheet, and plastic, commonly used in Korean road traffic signs, were investigated. Number of point clouds (NPC) and intensity (reflection value of points) were selected as LiDAR performance indicators. Purpose: This study aimed to predict high-risk neuroblastoma among neuroblastic tumors using radiomics features extracted from MRI. Materials and Methods: Pediatric patients (age≤18 years) diagnosed with neuroblastic tumors who had pre-treatment MR images available were enrolled from institution A from January 2010 to November 2019 (training set) and institution B from January 2016 to January 2022 (test set). Segmentation was performed with regions of interest manually drawn along tumor margins on the slice with the widest tumor area by two radiologists. First-order and texture features were extracted and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression (MLR) and random forest (RF) models from 10-fold cross-validation were built using these features. The trained MLR and RF models were tested in an external test set. Results: Thirty-two patients (M:F=23:9, 26.0±26.7 months) were in the training set and 14 patients (M:F=10:4, 33.4±20.4 months) were in the test set with radiomics features (n=930) being extracted. For 10 of the most relevant features selected, intra- and interobserver variability was moderate to excellent (ICCs 0.633–0.911, 0.695–0.985, respectively). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.94 (sensitivity 67%, specificity 91%, and accuracy 84%) for the MLR model and the average AUC was 0.83 (sensitivity 44%, specificity 87%, and accuracy 75%) for the RF model from 10-fold cross-validation. In the test set, AUCs of the MLR and RF models were 0.94 and 0.91, respectively. Conclusion: An MRI-based radiomics model can help predict high-risk neuroblastoma among neuroblastic tumors.
