Multimodal biometric system utilizes two or moreindividual modalities, e.g., face, ear, and fingerprint, toimprove the recognition accuracy of conventional unimodalmethods. We propose a new dimensionality reduction methodcalled Dimension Reduce Projection (DRP) in this paper. DRPcan not only preserve local information by capturing the intramodal geometry, but also extract between-class relevant structures for classification effectively. Experimental results show that our proposed method performs better than other algorithms including PCA, LDA and MFA.

Multimodal biometric identification technique utilizes two or more individual modalities to improve the identification accuracy and overcome some problems existing in conventional unimodal methods. This paper presents a multimodal biometric identification approach based on the features of face and palmprint. Two feature extraction methods are employed, one is based on the statistics properties (SP) of the biometric image and the other is the classical two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA). The minimal distance rule (MDR) is adopted for fusion at the matching score level. We compare the results of the multimodality identification with the results of the unimodal face and palmprint identification. The experimental results show that the performance of multimodality outperforms the unimodal identification and the accuracy can reach 100% based on ORL face database and PolyU palmprint database using the fusion rule at the matching score level.

Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM) is a newly developed technique. As a near-field optical microscope, it has the high resolution breaking through the diffraction limit and the advantage for easy to prepare the samples. PSTM is a useful tool in the inspection for many kinds of material film as the image containing the sample's information of topography and refractive index. We have developed a PSTM with resolution 5 to approximately 10 nm and scanning range 6 X 6 micrometer. By making use of two lasers, the false image caused by inclination of sample surface can be reduced. This PSTM is engaged in the inspection of Al 2 O 3 optical waveguide film made using ion-beam-enhanced-deposition (IBED) technique at different substrate temperature. The PSTM images of the optical waveguide film are obtained and analyzed. The PSTM images show that as the increasing of the substrate temperature during the deposition, the sample images of refractive index and topography tend to smooth and even, consequently the scattering loss can be decreased. The conclusion is that by properly increasing the temperature of the substrate during the deposition period, the scattering loss can be decreased and the property of Al 2 O 3 optical waveguide can be improved.
