Abstract The “terminal hydroxyl group anchoring mechanism” has been studied on metal oxides (Al2O3, CeO2) as well as a variety of noble and transition metals (Ag, Pt, Pd, Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Co) in a number of generalized studies, but there is still a gap in how to regulate the content of terminal hydroxyl groups to influence the dispersion of the active species and thus to achieve optimal catalytic performance. Herein, we utilized AlOOH as a precursor for γ-Al2O3 and induced the transformation of the exposed crystal face of γ-Al2O3 from (110) to (100) by controlling the calcination temperature to generate more terminal hydroxyl groups to anchor Ag species. Experimental results combined with AIMD and DFT show that temperature can drive the atomic rearrangement on the (110) crystal face, thereby forming a structure similar to the atomic arrangement of the (100) crystal face. This resulted in the formation of more terminal hydroxyl groups during the high-temperature calcination of the support (Al-900), which can capture Ag species to form single-atom dispersions, and ultimately develop a stable and efficient single-atom Ag-based catalyst.

Study region: The Dongzhi tableland on the loess plateau, China. Study focus: This study investigates how various land use types on the Loess Plateau affect groundwater recharge using the chloride mass balance method (CMB). By integrating data from Cl–, NO3/Cl–, and stable isotopes (δ18O and δ2H), the research develops a new approach to estimate the average ion concentration rates in soil profiles. This methodology provides a nuanced understanding of how precipitation infiltration recharges groundwater under different land use scenarios and the impact of land use changes on these processes. New hydrological insights for the region: The research findings highlight significant variations in groundwater recharge rates among different land uses. Grasslands show the highest recharge rate at 26 mm/yr, followed by forests at 23 mm/yr, while shrublands have the lowest at 5 mm/yr. Agricultural lands have moderate recharge rates ranging from 14 to 16 mm/yr. Transitioning from agricultural land to other land uses like shrublands and forests results in dramatic changes in recharge rates, with decreases and increases in recharge of 72% and 61%, respectively. These insights are crucial for developing strategic land-use planning to optimize groundwater recharge and enhance water security on the Loess Plateau. The study emphasizes the need for policies that balance hydrological science and land management to sustain both human livelihoods and ecological continuity.

Abstract Objective This study aims to identify and analyze the risk factors associated with Cervical Lymph Node Metastasis (CNM) in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) patients. Methods We conducted a retrospective study involving the clinicopathological data of 2384 PTC patients admitted to our hospital between January 2016 and December 2020. All relevant data were statistically processed and analyzed. Results The related risk factors for Central Lymph Node Metastasis (CLNM) were gender (male), age (≤ 30 years old), tumor lesion size (> 0.855 cm), and multifocal tumor foci. The ROC curve revealed that the critical value for predicting CLNM based on tumor lesion size was 0.855 (sensitivity = 57.9%, specificity = 69%, AUC = 0.269, and P 0.855 cm), and multiple tumor lesions in PTC patients. Central Lymph Node Dissection (CLND) is recommended for patients with these risk factors. On the other hand, preoperative ultrasound examination, fine-needle pathological examination, and genetic testing should be used to determine whether Lateral Cervical Lymph Node Dissection (LLND) is needed.

Introduction. The development of combinatorial adjuvants is a promising strategy to boost vaccination efficiency. Accumulating evidence indicates that manganese exerts strong immunocompetence and will become an enormous potential adjuvant. Here, we described a novel combination of Mn2+ plus aluminum hydroxide (AH) adjuvant that significantly exhibited the synergistic immune effect. Methodology. Initially, IsdB3 proteins as the immune-dominant fragment of IsdB proteins derived from Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were prepared. IsdB3 proteins were identified by western blotting. Furthermore, we immunized C57/B6 mice with IsdB3 proteins plus Mn2+ and AH adjuvant. After the second immunization, the proliferation of lymphocytes was measured by the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and the level of IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-17 cytokine from spleen lymphocytes in mice and generation of the antibodies against IsdB3 in serum was detected with ELISA, and the protective immune response was assessed through S. aureus challenge. Results. IsdB3 proteins plus Mn2+ and AH obviously stimulated the proliferation of spleen lymphocytes and increased the secretion of IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-17 cytokine in mice, markedly enhanced the generation of the antibodies against IsdB3 in serum, observably decreased bacterial load in organs, and greatly improved the survival rate of mice. Conclusion. These data showed that the combination of Mn2+ and AH significantly acted a synergistic effect, reinforced the immunogenicity of IsdB3, and offered a new strategy to increase vaccine efficiency.

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for various infections with diverse clinical presentation and severity. The α-hemolysin is a major virulence factor in the pathogenesis of S. aureus infections.Objective: To produce a chimeric fusion protein for hemolytic detection of the S. aureus isolates and as a component of a multi-antigen vaccine.Methods: The fused strategy employed a flexible linker to incorporate the possible B cell and T cell determinants into one chimera (HlaD). The humoral and cellular response to the HlaD in mice was assessed to reveal a non-significant difference compared with the full-length α-hemolysin mutant (Hla H35L).Results: The results of the protective effect, the mimetic lung cell injury, and bacterial clearness demonstrated that the mice vaccinated with the HlaD alleviated the severity of the infection of the S. aureus, and the HlaD could similarly function with Hla H35L.Conclusion: The chimeric fusion (HlaD) provided a diagnostic antigen for hemolysis of the S. aureus strains and a potential vaccine component.

Abstract Objective miR-125b-5p plays an important role in the development of cancer and drug resistance. However, in cisplatin resistance of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the function and potential mechanism of miR-125b-5p is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the role and molecular mechanism of miR-125b-5p in cisplatin resistance of NSCLC. Methods A GEO dataset (GSE168707) was analyzed to find high miR-125b-5p levels were associated with DDP resistance. miR-125b-5p expression levels were detected in A549 and A549/DDP cells via real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). Luciferase reporter assays, western blots and mouse model xenografted were performed to identify CREB1 as a direct target gene of miR-125b-5p. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were also performed to identify whether miR-125b-5p upregulation by TRIM28 induces DDP resistance in NSCLC through CREB1 inhibition. Results In A549/DDP cells, miR-125b-5p expression was upregulated compared to A549 cells. Then miR-125b-5p was found to increase DDP resistance in NSCLC in vivo and in vitro by increasing cell proliferation and suppressing cell apoptosis. Bioinformatic analyses were used to search for gene which miR-125b-5p can target. We identified miR-125b-5p can regulate CREB1 via luciferase reporter assays, qRT-PCR and western blots. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were also performed to confirm miR-125b-5p could impact on CREB1 and induce the DDP resistance in NSCLC. Additionally, we used bioinformatic analyses to find tripartite motif-containing 28 (TRIM28) as a transcriptional enhance factor of miR-125b-5p. The expression of TRIM28 was upregulated in A549/DDP cells compared with that in A549 cells by qRT-PCR. Finally, we found TRIM28 could mediate DDP resistance through miR-125b-5p/CREB1 axis via cell proliferation, western blot and apoptosis assay. Conclusions Overall, our findings demonstrated novel functions and mechanisms underlying DDP resistance in NSCLC through the TRIM28/miR-125b-5p/CREB1 axis. These may serve as novel therapeutic targets to improve the treatment efficacy using DDP for NSCLC in the future.

Abstract Introduction Staphylococcus aureus seriously threatens human and animal health. IsdB137‐361 of the iron surface determinant B protein (IsdB) from S. aureus exhibits the strong immunogenicity, but its immunoprotective effect is still to be further promoted. Because PEI‐PLGA nanoparticles are generated by PEI conjugate with PLGA to develop great potential as a novel immune adjuvant, the immunogenicity of IsdB137‐361 is likely be strengthened by PEI‐PLGA. Methods Here, PEI‐PLGA nanoparticles containing IsdB137‐361 proteins were prepared by optimizing the entrapment efficiency. Mice were immunized with IsdB137‐361‐PEI‐PLGA nanoparticles to assess their anti‐S. aureus effects. The level of IFN‐γ, IL‐4, IL‐17, and IL‐10 cytokines from spleen lymphocytes in mice and generation of the antibodies against IsdB137‐361 in serum was assessed by ELISA, the protective immune response was appraised by S. aureus challenge. Results IsdB137‐361 proteins loaded by PEI‐PLGA were able to stimulate effectively the proliferation of spleen lymphocytes and increase the secretion of IFN‐γ, IL‐4, IL‐17, and IL‐10 cytokine from spleen lymphocytes, and significantly enhance generation of the antibodies against IsdB137‐361 in serum, reduce the level of bacterial load in liver, spleen and kidney, and greatly improve the survival rate of mice after challenge. Conclusion These data showed that PEI‐PLGA nanoparticles can significantly enhance the immunogenicity of IsdB137‐361 proteins, and provide an important reference for the development of novel immune adjuvant.

Herein, NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) monolithic catalysts self-supported by metal foam were synthetized in-situ by a simple one-step hydrothermal method, and were first used for ozone elimination. NiFe-LDH/IF (Iron Foam, IF) monolithic catalysts were successfully prepared in the absence of ammonium fluoride (NH4F), avoiding the production of wastewater containing fluorine. The optimized NiFe-LDH/IF monolithic catalyst exhibited ozone conversion of 91.5% and 85% after 6 and 168 h, respectively, under harsh conditions, showing promising potential for ozone pollution control. This study provided a convenient and eco-friendly method for the preparation of monolithic catalyst.

Water availability profoundly and simultaneously affects the water cycle and disturbs terrestrial carbon cycle. However, there is currently a lack of knowledge about how carbon–water coupling occurs in response to soil moisture availability, and the underlying mechanisms. Here, using two kinds of observational datasets (i.e., leaf gas exchange and ecosystem eddy-covariance), we evaluated a normalized water-use efficiency (WUE) measure (g1, the “stomatal conductance slope”), and explored its dynamic behavior in response to soil moisture availability. It was found that patterns of seasonal variations in WUE were not consistent between the two datasets. A contrasting response of G1 (the capital letter denotes g1 at the ecosystem level) to volumetric water content (VWC) during different stages of the growing season was confirmed, which was attributed to the different sensitivities of biological processes (i.e., photosynthesis and transpiration) to soil moisture availability. WUE variability during the main growing seasons was primarily controlled by transpiration, whereas WUE variability during the early and late growing seasons was mostly controlled by photosynthesis. Our findings suggest that phenology plays a significant role in regulating carbon–water coupling processes, and then exerts biotic control. The insights gained from this study will facilitate an in-depth understanding of the responses of plant biological processes to global change.

Abstract Introduction Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a gram‐positive opportunistic pathogen, there are currently no high effective vaccine against S. aureus in humans and animals, the development of an efficient vaccine remains an important challenge to prevent S. aureus infection. Here, we prepared Als3‐Th‐cell‐epitope‐Target of RNAIII Activating Protein (TRAP) (ATT) proteins plus the novel combined adjuvants to develop a promising vaccine candidate against S. aureus. Methods The recombinant pET‐28a (+)‐att plasmids were constructed, and the ATT proteins were expressed and obtained, then, ATT plus Freund's adjuvant or the novel combined adjuvants of cytosine‐phosphate‐guanosine oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG), muramyl dipeptides (MDP), and FIA were immunized in mice. After booster immunization, the levels of interferon‐γ (IFN‐γ), interleukin‐4 (IL‐4), IL‐10 and IL‐17A cytokine were evaluated, the humoral immune responses against TRAP were detected in mice, and the survival rate of mice was confirmed by challenge assay. Results The mice immunized with ATT plus Freund's adjuvant exhibited significantly higher level of IFN‐γ, IL‐4, IL‐10, and IL‐17A, and displayed the stronger humoral immune response against TRAP than control groups, importantly, the survival rate of these mice was significantly higher than control groups. In addition, compared with the control groups, ATT + CpG + MDP + FIA group was elicited significantly higher level of IFN‐γ, IL‐4, IL‐10, and IL‐17A and was triggered the stronger humoral immune responses against TRAP, moreover, generated the higher survival rate of mice. Conclusion Als3 epitopes significantly enhanced TRAP immunogenicity. ATT plus the novel combined adjuvants of CpG, MDP, and FIA induced the strong immune response and protection against S. aureus, revealing the combination of CpG, MDP, and FIA adjuvant acts the synergistic effect.

The difunctionalization of alkenes involving a trifluoromethylthio group (SCF3) for the conversion of versatile and readily available olefins into structurally more complex molecules has been successfully studied. However, the disproportionate dithiolation of alkenes is unknown. Herein, a transition-metal-free protocol is presented for the vicinal trifluoromethylthio–thiolation of unactivated alkenes via a radical process under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope and excellent tolerance.

Detailed atom-level anchoring mechanism of Ag species on γ-Al2O3 is largely unknown for the widely used Ag/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. Here, the authors demonstrate that single-Ag atom can be only anchored by the terminal hydroxyls on the (100) surfaces of γ-Al2O3 through consuming two or three terminal hydroxyls.

Abstract Copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have recently emerged as promising luminophores, featuring ultra‐small size, reasonable photostability, large Stokes shift, and long emission lifetimes. Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) has been often used to further improve both the emission intensity and stability of these clusters, with plenty of potential applications in the fields of chemical sensing and bioimaging. This review starts with a summary of the current understanding of emission mechanisms of Cu NCs and proceeds with the analysis of contributions from the Cu metal core and the organic ligands. We summarize the recent research progress on the design of ligands, and the ways on how to induce aggregation of the Cu NCs through electrostatic charge neutralization, host‐guest interactions, and the use of templates. We also discuss the current understanding of emission mechanisms of Cu NCs experiencing AIE, such as the often‐cited restriction of intramolecular motion and contributions from Cu(I) molecular complexes. We finish this review by providing concluding remarks and offering our own perspective on the active field of AIE of Cu NCs, with a hope to further promote the research on the fundamental aspects of this useful phenomenon.

Infection of cattle with bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV−1) can lead to upper respiratory tract disease, conjunctivitis, or genital disease and cause serious economic losses to the cattle industry worldwide. The role of long noncoding RNAs in BHV−1 infection is not well understood. To explore the role of lncRNA−MSTRG.16919.1 in bovine herpes virus type I (BHV−1) infected MDBK cells, the lncRNA−MSTRG.16919.1 gene was silenced and sequenced transcriptome and sequencing data were analyzed by Edge R software, Gene Ontology (GO), the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and an interaction network of proteins. Real−time quantitative PCR (RT−qPCR) and Western blotting were used to verify the results of bioinformatic analyses. The results showed that 1151 differential genes were obtained in the siRNA−MSTRG.16919.1 group compared with an NC group. Compared with BHV−33 h, 6586 differentially expressed genes were obtained. A total of 498 differentially expressed genes were screened from the two groups. To verify the accuracy of the sequencing, six genes were randomly selected for RT−qPCR, and the results showed that the expression trend of selected genes was consistent with the sequencing results. GO enrichment analysis showed that the differential genes were related to such biological processes as nucleotide binding, enzyme binding, cell cycle, and glial macromolecule metabolism. KEGG analysis enriched 378 and 2634 signaling pathways, respectively, that were associated with virus infection, ubiquitin−mediated protein hydrolysis, phosphoinositol metabolism, apoptosis, and other metabolic pathways. The STRING protein interaction database was used to analyze the interaction network of proteins encoded by differential genes, and the degree algorithm in Cytoscape was used to screen the top 20 proteins. The results showed that SKIV2L2, JAK2, PIK3CB, and MAPK8 were related to virus infection. Western blot analysis of TNF, NF−κB, MAPK8, MAPK9, and MAPK10 proteins showed that lncRNA−MSTRG.16919.1 was involved in regulating the expression of these functional proteins. The results of this study provide basic information for exploring the function and regulatory mechanism of lncRNA−MSTRG.16919.1 in organisms and help for further studying the interaction between virus and host.

Orf is a widespread contagious epithelial viral disease found particularly in most sheep breeding countries in the world. Recently, an orf virus (ORFV) strain OV-HLJ05 was isolated from an outbreak in northeast China. Three genes of interest including ORFV011 (B2L), ORFV059 (F1L), and ORFV132 (VEGF) of ORFV, were recruited to identify and genetically characterize this newly isolated virus. Amino acid (aa) sequence compared with the ORFV references listed in GenBank, both B2L and F1L of OV-HLJ05 showed less microheterogeneity from their references. In contrast, the VEGF gene was included in the NZ7-VEGF like group as previously considered by Mercer in 2002. Unexpectedly, further multiple VEGF matches were made, using 34 published sequences from China and India, resulting in 27 strains of the NZ7 members. Based on Karki's report in 2020, NZ7-VEGF like viruses are emerging more and more frequently in these two countries, damaging the Asian sheep industry. Obvious heterogeneity with the NZ2, insertion of two oligopeptides TATI(L)QVVVAI(L) and SSSS(S) motif were found in the NZ7-like VEGF protein. These VEGFs are divided mainly into two types and a significant increase in the number of hydrogen bonds within the NZ7-like VEGF dimers was observed. The NZ7-like ORFV apparently favors the goat as a host and an emphasis on this in future epidemiological and pathological studies should be considered, focusing on the NZ7-like virus.

The UBXN proteins are likely involved in a diverse range of biological processes, but their physiological functions remain largely unknown. Here the authors show that UBXN3B positively regulates STING-mediated immune responses in the context of viral infections.

Abstract Staphylococcus aureus can cause different types of diseases from mild skin infections to life-threatening sepsis worldwide. Owing to the emergence and transmission of multidrug-resistant strains, developing an impactful immunotherapy especially vaccine control approach against S. aureus infections is increasingly encouraged and supported. S. aureus manganese transport protein C (MntC), which is a highly-conserved cell surface protein, can elicit protective immunity against S. aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. In this study, we evaluated the humoral immune response and CD4+ T cell-mediated immune responses in a mouse peritonitis model. The results showed that MntC-specific antibodies conferred an essential protection for mice to reduce invasion of S. aureus, which was corroborated via the opsonophagocytic killing assay and passive immunization experiment in mice, and moreover MntC-induced Th17 played a remarkable part in preventing S. aureus infection since the MntC-induced protective immunity decreased after neutralization of IL-17 by antibody in vivo and the Th17 adoptive transferred-mice could partly resist S. aureus challenge. In conclusion, we considered that the MntC-specific antibodies and MntC-specific Th17 cells play cooperative roles in the prevention of S. aureus infection.

Flaviviruses have evolved complex mechanisms to evade the mammalian host immune systems including the RIG-I (retinoic acid-inducible gene I) like receptor (RLR) signaling. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a re-emerging flavivirus that is associated with severe neonatal microcephaly and adult Guillain-Barre syndrome. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ZIKV pathogenesis remain poorly defined. Here we report that ZIKV non-structural protein 4A (NS4A) impairs the RLR-mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS) interaction and subsequent induction of antiviral immune responses. In human trophoblasts, both RIG-I and melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5) contribute to type I interferon (IFN) induction and control ZIKV replication. Type I IFN induction by ZIKV is almost completely abolished in MAVS-/- cells. NS4A represses RLR-, but not Toll-like receptor-mediated immune responses. NS4A specifically binds the N-terminal caspase activation and recruitment domain (CARD) of MAVS and thus blocks its accessibility by RLRs. Our study provides in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms of immune evasion by ZIKV and its pathogenesis.

Debris flows that involve loess material produce important damage around the world. However, the kinematics of such processes are poorly understood. To better understand these kinematics, we used a flume to measure the kinematics of debris flows with different mixture densities and weights. We used sensors to measure pore fluid pressure and total normal stress. We measured flow patterns, velocities, and depths using a high-speed camera and laser range finder to identify the temporal evolution of the flow behavior and the corresponding peaks. We constructed fitting functions for the relationships between the maximum values of the experimental parameters. The hydrographs of the debris flows could be divided into four phases: increase to a first minor peak, a subsequent smooth increase to a second peak, fluctuation until a third major peak, and a final continuous decrease. The flow depth, velocity, total normal stress, and pore fluid pressure were strongly related to the mixture density and total mixture weight. We defined the corresponding relationships between the flow parameters and mixture kinematics. Linear and exponential relationships described the maximum flow depth and the mixture weight and density, respectively. The flow velocity was linearly related to the weight and density. The pore fluid pressure and total normal stress were linearly related to the weight, but logarithmically related to the density. The regression goodness of fit for all functions was >0.93. Therefore, these functions are accurate and could be used to predict the consequences of loess debris flows. Our results provide an improved understanding of the effects of mixture density and weight on the kinematics of debris flows in loess areas, and can help landscape managers prevent and design improved engineering solutions.

Water shortages limit agricultural production in the world’s arid and semi-arid regions. The Northern region of China’s Shaanxi Province, in the Loess Plateau, is a good example. Raising the water productivity of rainfed grain production in this region is essential to increase food production and reduce poverty, thereby improving food security. To support efforts to increase crop water productivity (CWP), we accounted for limitations of most existing studies (experimental studies of specific crops or hydrological modeling approaches) by using actual field data derived from statistical reports of cropping patterns. We estimated the CWPs of nine primary crops grown in four counties in Northern Shaanxi from 1994 to 2008 by combining statistics on the cultivated area and yields with detailed estimates of evapotranspiration based on daily meteorological data. We further calculated both the caloric CWP of water (CCWP) and the CWP of productive water (i.e., water used for transpiration). We found that regional CWP averaged 6.333 kg mm–1 ha–1, the CCWP was 17,683.81 cal mm–1 ha–1, the CWP of productive green water was 8.837 kg mm–1 ha–1, and the CCWP of productive green water was 24,769.07 cal mm–1 ha–1. Corn, sorghum, and buckwheat had the highest CWP, and although potatoes had the largest planted area and relatively high CWP, they had a low CCWP.

The GapC of Streptococcus dysgalactiae (S. dysgalactiae) is a highly conserved surface protein that can induce protective humoral immune response in animals. However, B-cell epitopes on the S. dysgalactiae GapC have not been well identified. In this study, a monoclonal antibody (mAb5B7) against the GapC1-150 protein was prepared. After passive transfer, mAb5B7 could partially protect mice against S. dysgalactiae infection. Eleven positive phage clones recognized by mAb5B7 were identified by screening phage-displayed random 12-peptide library, most of which matched the consensus motif DTTQGRFD. The motif sequence exactly matches amino acids 48-55 of the S. dysgalactiae GapC protein. In addition, the motif 48DTTQGRFD55 shows high homology among various streptococcus species. Site-directed mutagenic analysis further confirmed that residues D48, T50, Q51, G52 and F54 formed the core motif of 48DTTQGRFD55. This motif was the minimal determinant of the B-cell epitope recognized by the mAb5B7. As expected, epitope-peptide evoked protective immune response against S. dysgalactiae infection in immunized mice. Taken together, this identified conserved B-cell epitope within S. dysgalactiae GapC could provide very valuable insights for vaccine design against S. dysgalactiae infection.

Estimation of soil moisture distribution in desert regions is challenged by the deep unsaturated zone and the extreme natural environment. In this study, an entropy-based method, consisting of information entropy, principle of maximum entropy (PME), solutions to PME with constraints, and the determination of parameters, is used to estimate the soil moisture distribution in the 10 m deep vadose zone of a desert region. Firstly, the soil moisture distribution is described as a scaled probability density function (PDF), which is solved by PME with the constraints of normalization, known arithmetic mean and geometric mean, and the solution is the general form of gamma distribution. A constant arithmetic mean is determined by considering the stable average recharge rate at thousand year scale, and an approximate constant geometric mean is determined by the low flow rate (about 1 cm a year). Followed, the parameters of the scaled PDF of gamma distribution are determined by local environmental factors like terrain and vegetation: the multivariate linear equations are established to qualify the relationship between the parameters and the environmental factors on the basis of nineteen random soil moisture profiles about depth through the application of fuzzy mathematics. Finally, the accuracy is tested using correlation coefficient (CC) and relative error. This method performs with CC larger than 0.9 in more than a half profiles and most larger than 0.8, the relative errors are less than 30% in most of soil moisture profiles and can be as low as less than 15% when parameters fitted appropriately. Therefore, this study provides an alternative method to estimate soil moisture distribution in top 0–10 m layers of the Badain Jaran Desert based on local terrain and vegetation factors instead of drilling sand samples, this method would be useful in desert regions with extreme natural conditions since these environmental factors can be obtained by remote sensing data. Meanwhile, we should bear in mind that this method is challenged in humid regions since more intensive and frequent precipitation, and more vegetation cover make the system much more complex.
