Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a complex metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, with aldose reductase playing a critical role in the pathophysiology of diabetic complications. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of flavonoid compounds as potential aldose reductase inhibitors using a combination of molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The three-dimensional structures of representative flavonoid compounds were obtained from PubChem, minimized, and docked against aldose reductase using Discovery Studio’s CDocker module. The top 10 compounds Daidzein, Quercetin, Kaempferol, Butin, Genistein, Sterubin, Baicalein, Pulchellidin, Wogonin, and Biochanin_A were selected based on their lowest docking energy values for further analysis. Subsequent MD simulations over 100 ns revealed that Daidzein and Quercetin maintained the highest stability, forming multiple conventional hydrogen bonds and strong hydrophobic interactions, consistent with their favorable interaction energies and stable RMSD values. Comparative analysis of hydrogen bond interactions and RMSD profiles underscored the ligand stability. MMPBSA analysis further confirmed the significant binding affinities of Daidzein and Quercetin, highlighting their potential as aldose reductase inhibitors. This study highlights the potential of flavonoids as aldose reductase inhibitors, offering insights into their binding interactions and stability, which could contribute to developing novel therapeutics for DM complications.

Abstract Although there is consensus among dentists that visual aids not only improve vision but also help improve posture, evidence is scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of visual aids (loupe and microscope) on the muscle workload of dentists during crown preparation on dentiform first molars in each quadrant of a phantom head, considering dentists’ muscles, patients’ tooth positions and surfaces. Six right-handed dentists from a single tertiary hospital participated. BackgroundYouth in out-of-home care encounter substantial mental health challenges because of the absence of stable family and social support systems. Their vulnerability is heightened by trauma, neglect, and abuse. They struggle, especially when transitioning to independent living, coping with loneliness, anxiety, and pressure. ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop a mobile app with high accessibility and long-term continuous effects to support independent living and improve mental health among youth in out-of-home care. The approach used was the systematic and step-by-step intervention mapping (IM) framework. MethodsThe program was created using the IM framework and had 6 steps. Drawing from data from individual and focus group interviews and literature reviews, we developed a logical model of the problem. We established program outcomes and objectives, defining performance objectives and variable determinants. We identified theoretical and evidence-based methods that influence determinants. The app design integrated these methods into practical applications, allowing for the creation of self-management and emotional support tools. The development process included ongoing discussions between app designers and the research team to ensure that user needs and preferences were addressed. ResultsIndividual interviews and focus group discussions revealed challenges in managing daily routines and regulating emotions. The program design was based on the transtheoretical model, social cognitive theory, and elaboration likelihood model. Key features included goal setting, structured routines, emotion recognition flashcards, character models demonstrating emotion regulation strategies, verbal persuasion, and self-monitoring tools to support habit formation and emotion regulation. An implementation plan was developed to facilitate the app’s adoption, execution, and maintenance, while an evaluation plan was established, including app usage analytics, user logs, and feedback surveys. A randomized controlled trial will be conducted to assess the app’s impact on mental health outcomes, focusing on reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms, improving emotion regulation, and enhancing daily living skills. ConclusionsThe IM framework was beneficial in developing a mobile app to enhance the mental health of youth in out-of-home care. The study produced a program grounded in theory and evidence that caters to the needs of these individuals. Further research should aim to verify the app’s effectiveness in real-world settings and refine it continuously based on user input.

Abstract The effective work‐function of metal electrode is one of the major factors to determine the threshold voltage of metal/oxide/semiconductor junction. In this work, it is demonstrated experimentally that the effective work‐function of the Aluminum (Al) electrode in Al/SiO2/n‐Si junction increases significantly by ≈1.04 eV with the graphene interlayer inserted at Al/SiO2 interface. The device‐physical analysis of solving Poisson equation analytically is provided when the flat‐band voltage is applied to the junction, supporting that the large tuning of Al effective work‐function may originate from the electric dipole layer formed by the off‐centric distribution of electron orbitals between Al and graphene layer. Our work suggests the feasibility of constructing the dual‐metal gate CMOS circuitry just by using Al electrodes with area‐specific underlying graphene interlayer.

Tuberculous pericarditis is an extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis that is most commonly associated with pericardial thickening, effusion, and calcification. We present a case of tuberculous pericarditis mimicking a malignant pericardial tumor in a 77-year-old male. CT revealed an irregular and nodular pericardial thickening. MRI revealed high signal intensity on T1-weighted fat-suppressed images and peripheral rim enhancement after gadolinium administration. MRI can be helpful in determining the differential diagnoses in cases of tuberculous pericarditis with nonspecific imaging findings.

Abstract Osteoarthritis affects millions of people worldwide but current treatments using analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs only alleviate symptoms of this disease. Here, we present an injectable, biodegradable piezoelectric hydrogel, made of short electrospun poly-L-lactic acid nanofibers embedded inside a collagen matrix, which can be injected into the joints and self-produce localized electrical cues under ultrasound activation to drive cartilage healing. In vitro, data shows that the piezoelectric hydrogel with ultrasound can enhance cell migration and induce stem cells to secrete TGF-β1, which promotes chondrogenesis. In vivo, the rabbits with osteochondral critical-size defects receiving the ultrasound-activated piezoelectric hydrogel show increased subchondral bone formation, improved hyaline-cartilage structure, and good mechanical properties, close to healthy native cartilage. This piezoelectric hydrogel is not only useful for cartilage healing but also potentially applicable to other tissue regeneration, offering a significant impact on the field of regenerative tissue engineering.

Abstract USP47 is widely involved in tumor development, metastasis, and other processes while performing a more regulatory role in inflammatory responses, myocardial infarction, and neuronal development. In this study, we investigate the functional and biochemical properties of USP47, whereby depleting USP47 inhibited cancer cell growth in a p53-dependent manner—a phenomenon that enhances during the simultaneous knockdown of USP7. Full-length USP47 shows higher deubiquitinase activity than the catalytic domain. The crystal structures of the catalytic domain, in its free and ubiquitin-bound states, reveal that the misaligned catalytic triads, ultimately, become aligned upon ubiquitin-binding, similar to USP7, thereby becoming ready for catalysis. Yet, the composition and lengths of BL1, BL2, and BL3 of USP47 differ from those for USP7, and they contribute to the observed selectivity. Our study provides molecular details of USP47 regulation, substrate recognition, and the hotspots for drug discovery by targeting USP47.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the correlation between ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) size and multifidus fatty degeneration (MFD), hypothesizing that larger OPLL sizes are associated with worse MFD. Methods One hundred four patients with cervical OPLL who underwent surgery were screened. OPLL occupying diameter and area ratios, the severity of MFD using the Goutallier classification, and range of motion (ROM) of cervical flexion-extension (ΔCobb) were measured. Correlation analyses between OPLL size, MFD severity, and ΔCobb were conducted. MFD severity was compared for each OPLL type using one-way analysis of variance. Results The final clinical data from 100 patients were analyzed. The average Goutallier grade of C2–7 significantly correlated with the average OPLL diameter and area occupying ratios, and OPLL involved vertebral level (r = 0.58, p < 0.01; r = 0.40, p < 0.01; r = 0.47, p < 0.01, respectively). The OPLL size at each cervical level significantly correlated with MFD of the same or 1–3 adjacent levels. ΔCobb angle was negatively correlated with the average Goutallier grade (r = -0.31, p < 0.01) and average OPLL occupying diameter and area ratios (r = -0.31, p < 0.01; r = -0.35, p < 0.01, respectively). Patients with continuous OPLL exhibited worse MFD than those with segmental OPLL (p < 0.01). Conclusion OPLL size is clinically correlated with MFD and cervical ROM. OPLL at one spinal level affects MFD at the same and 1–3 adjacent spinal levels. The worsening severity of MFD is associated with the longitudinal continuity of OPLL.

Piezoelectric biomaterials can generate piezoelectrical charges in response to mechanical activation. These generated charges can directly stimulate bone regeneration by triggering signaling pathway that is important for regulating osteogenesis of cells seeded on the materials. On the other hand, mechanical forces applied to the biomaterials play an important role in bone regeneration through the process called mechanotransduction. While mechanical force and electrical charges are both important contributing factors to bone tissue regeneration, they operate through different underlying mechanisms. The utilizations of piezoelectric biomaterials have been explored to serve as self-charged scaffolds which can promote stem cell differentiation and the formation of functional bone tissues. However, it is still not clear how mechanical activation and electrical charge act together on such a scaffold and which factors play more important role in the piezoelectric stimulation to induce osteogenesis. In our study, we found Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA)-based piezoelectric scaffolds with higher piezoelectric charges had a more pronounced osteoinductive effect than those with lower charges. This provided a new mechanistic insight that the observed osteoinductive effect of the piezoelectric PLLA scaffolds is likely due to the piezoelectric stimulation they provide, rather than mechanical stimulation alone. Our findings provide a crucial guide for the optimization of piezoelectric material design and usage.

Background: Detecting and addressing depression symptoms at their outset can reduce the burden on individuals and society; however, it has a limitation in that such evaluations mainly rely on self-reports. Several studies have demonstrated a strong association between motor symptoms and early depression. We aimed to associate body balance measured by the Lower Quarter Y Balance Test (YBT-LQ) with depressive symptoms among young adults in the community, to confirm the current evidence that depression negatively influences body balance. Research question: Is the YBT-LQ an objective tool for measuring and evaluating young adults’ depression risks, as well as assessing whether depression negatively influences body balance? Methods: Our participants comprised 36 young adults. We assessed their depressive symptoms using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) via a Google survey, measured their body balance with the YBT-LQ, and analyzed data with Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient test, using SPSS version 27.0. Results: We found that the right leg's anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral scores— Z = −2.129, p = .033; Z = −2.181, p = .029; and Z = −2.250, p = .024, respectively—and composite scores—Z = 73.00, p = .027 —were significantly lower in the group with risk for clinical depression compared to the normal group. The CES-D total score had a negative association with all YBT-LQ scores, except for the anterior score of the left leg. Among the CES-D sub-factors, somatic and retarded activity showed negative correlations with all the YBT-LQ scores. Significance: Our findings revealed that depressive symptoms have a negative association with balance, and that the YBT-LQ can be a reliable tool for measuring motor symptoms of depression, specifically among young adults.

IntroductionThe global shortage of human blood for medical use has prompted the development of alternative blood sources. Nonhuman primates (NHPs) are commonly used owing to their physiological similarities to humans. The objective of the current study was to establish a controlled-blood-loss model in NHPs to explore their clinical and biological responses.MethodsBlood was sequentially withdrawn from 10 cynomolgus monkeys (10, 14, 18, 22, and 25% of the total blood volume); their vital signs were monitored, and blood parameters were serially analyzed. Humoral mediators in the blood were measured using flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.ResultsIn NHPs subjects to 25% blood loss and presenting with related clinical symptoms, the systolic blood pressure ratio on day 0 after bleeding was significantly lower than that of the animals from the other groups (median: 0.65 vs. 0.88, P = 0.0444). Red blood cell counts from day 0–14 and hematocrit levels from day 0–7 were markedly decreased relative to the baseline (P < 0.01). These parameters showed a direct correlation with the extent of blood loss. The levels of creatine phosphokinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase exhibited increases in response to blood loss and had a stronger correlation with the hemoglobin ratio than the volume of blood loss. The levels of C3a and C4a, as well as interleukin (IL)-1α and IL-15, displayed a strong correlation, with no apparent association with blood loss.ConclusionThe findings of the present study showed that only NHPs with 25% blood loss exhibited clinical decompensation and significant systolic blood pressure reduction without fatalities, suggesting that this level of blood loss is suitable for evaluating blood transfusion efficacy or other treatments in NHP models. In addition, the ratio of hemoglobin may serve as a more dependable marker for predicting clinical status than the actual volume of blood loss. Thus, our study could serve as a basis for future xenotransfusion research and to predict biological responses to massive blood loss in humans where controlled experiments cannot be ethically performed.

The increasing utilization of artificial intelligence algorithms in drug development has proven to be highly efficient and effective. One area where deep learning-based approaches have made significant contributions is in drug repositioning, enabling the identification of new therapeutic applications for existing drugs. In the present study, a trained deep-learning model was employed to screen a library of FDA-approved drugs to discover novel inhibitors targeting JAK2. To accomplish this, reference datasets containing active and decoy compounds specific to JAK2 were obtained from the DUD-E database. RDKit, a cheminformatic toolkit, was utilized to extract molecular features from the compounds. The DeepChem framework’s GraphConvMol, based on graph convolutional network models, was applied to build a predictive model using the DUD-E datasets. Subsequently, the trained deep-learning model was used to predict the JAK2 inhibitory potential of FDA-approved drugs. Based on these predictions, ribociclib, topiroxostat, amodiaquine, and gefitinib were identified as potential JAK2 inhibitors. Notably, several known JAK2 inhibitors demonstrated high potential according to the prediction results, validating the reliability of our prediction model. To further validate these findings and confirm their JAK2 inhibitory activity, molecular docking experiments were conducted using tofacitinib—an FDA-approved drug for JAK2 inhibition. Experimental validation successfully confirmed our computational analysis results by demonstrating that these novel drugs exhibited comparable inhibitory activity against JAK2 compared to tofacitinib. In conclusion, our study highlights how deep learning models can significantly enhance virtual screening efforts in drug discovery by efficiently identifying potential candidates for specific targets such as JAK2. These newly discovered drugs hold promises as novel JAK2 inhibitors deserving further exploration and investigation.

BackgroundMigraine is a prevalent disabling condition often associated with comorbid physical and psychological symptoms that contribute to impaired quality of life and disability. Studies suggest that increasing dietary omega-3 fatty acid is associated with headache reduction, but less is known about the effects on quality of life in migraine.MethodsAfter a 4-week run-in, 182 adults with 5–20 migraine days per month were randomized to one of the 3 arms for sixteen weeks. Dietary arms included: H3L6 (a high omega-3, low omega-6 diet), H3 (a high omega-3, an average omega-6 diet), or a control diet (average intakes of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids). Prespecified secondary endpoints included daily diary measures (stress perception, sleep quality, and perceived health), Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System Version 1.0 ([PROMIS©) measures and the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS). Analyses used linear mixed effects models to control for repeated measures.ResultsThe H3L6 diet was associated with significant improvements in stress perception [adjusted mean difference (aMD): −1.5 (95% confidence interval: −1.7 to −1.2)], sleep quality [aMD: 0.2 (95% CI:0.1–0.2)], and perceived health [aMD: 0.2 (0.2–0.3)] compared to the control. Similarly, the H3 diet was associated with significant improvements in stress perception [aMD: −0.8 (−1.1 to −0.5)], sleep quality [aMD: 0.2 (0.1, 0.3)], and perceived health [aMD: 0.3 (0.2, 0.3)] compared to the control. MIDAS scores improved substantially in the intervention groups compared with the control (H3L6 aMD: −11.8 [−25.1, 1.5] and H3 aMD: −10.7 [−24.0, 2.7]). Among the PROMIS-29 assessments, the biggest impact was on pain interference [H3L6 MD: −1.8 (−4.4, 0.7) and H3 aMD: −3.2 (−5.9, −0.5)] and pain intensity [H3L6 MD: −0.6 (−1.3, 0.1) and H3 aMD: −0.6 (−1.4, 0.1)].DiscussionThe diary measures, with their increased power, supported our hypothesis that symptoms associated with migraine attacks could be responsive to specific dietary fatty acid manipulations. Changes in the PROMIS© measures reflected improvements in non-headache pain as well as physical and psychological function, largely in the expected directions. These findings suggest that increasing omega-3 with or without decreasing omega-6 in the diet may represent a reasonable adjunctive approach to reducing symptoms associated with migraine attacks. Kleefstra syndrome is a rare genetic disease characterized by mental retardation, hypotonia, and a characteristic facial appearance. Furthermore, in some cases, Kleefstra syndrome is associated with various anorectal and genitourinary complications, including imperforated anus, vesicoureteral reflux, hydronephrosis, and chronic kidney disease. Herein, we present a case of Kleefstra syndrome with recurrent urinary tract infections associated with vesicoureteral reflux and rectourethral fistula, which was treated by a multidisciplinary approach.

Objective To prove the hypothesis that the parameters of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) during will be more deteriorated in neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) than in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Methods This retrospective study reviewed the data of 69 patients (NMS=32, AIS=37) who underwent scoliosis surgery under IONM. The amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs), and the amplitude and the latency of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were examined. Demographic, preoperative, perioperative and postoperative data were analyzed to determine whether they affected the IONM parameters for each group. Results Of the items analyzed, the bleeding amount was the only significant risk factor for SEP latency deterioration in the NMS group only. Naeseongcheon stream flows through Bonghwa-gun and Yecheon-gun in Gyeongbuk, South Korea. This study investigated otter genetic diversity using noninvasively collected fecal samples to determine population, sex, and kinship. In April 2019, 20 otter fecal samples were collected from a 60 km stretch of the stream for DNA extraction. Of these, DNA was extracted only from 12 relatively fresh samples to identify individuals and perform sex determination experiments. The results of genotyping, performed using seven microsatellite markers, estimated that at least 11 individual otters lived in Naeseongcheon stream. In addition, genetic analysis for sex determination found six females and five males. Based on the analysis of the kinship between individuals, it was determined that Gyeongjin A (GjA) and Gyeongjin B (GjB) were likely to be siblings with Musum A (MsA) as their father (GjA/MsA-QGM: 0.411, GjB/MsA-QGM: 0.700, and GjA/GjB-QGM: 0.806). Seokgwan C (SgC) was likely an offspring of Seokgwan B (SgB, male) and Seokgwan A (SgA, female; SgC/SgA-QGM: 0.652, SgC/SgB-QGM: 0.525). The methods used in this molecular genetic study are appropriate for continuously monitoring otters living in large areas. Expanding the target area to adjacent water systems including Nakdonggang river would be highly helpful in conserving endangered wildlife species.

Summary: C9orf72 repeat expansions are the most common genetic cause of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Poly(GR) proteins are toxic to neurons by forming cytoplasmic inclusions that sequester RNA-binding proteins including stress granule (SG) proteins. However, little is known of the factors governing poly(GR) inclusion formation. Here, we show that poly(GR) infiltrates a finely tuned network of protein-RNA interactions underpinning SG formation. It interacts with G3BP1, the key driver of SG assembly and a protein we found is critical for poly(GR) inclusion formation. Moreover, we discovered that N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-modified mRNAs and m6A-binding YTHDF proteins not only co-localize with poly(GR) inclusions in brains of c9FTD/ALS mouse models and patients with c9FTD, they promote poly(GR) inclusion formation via the incorporation of RNA into the inclusions. Our findings thus suggest that interrupting interactions between poly(GR) and G3BP1 or YTHDF1 proteins or decreasing poly(GR) altogether represent promising therapeutic strategies to combat c9FTD/ALS pathogenesis.

Objective: This study evaluates the efficacy of Internet-Based Training in Trauma Care for Nurses (IBTTCN) to improve nurses’ trauma intervention self-efficacy, professional quality of life, and attitudes and knowledge about post-traumatic stress disorder. Methods: Forty-one nurses participated from May to July 2021. The assessment points were at baseline (T1), immediately after program completion (4 weeks; T2), and 1 month after T2 (T3). Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis and generalized estimating equations. Results: In the intervention group, trauma intervention self-efficacy increased significantly after the IBTTCN, and the effect of such self-efficacy over time was significant. Conclusions: The IBTTCN improved nurses’ trauma intervention self-efficacy.

Abstract Typhoon Chaba made landfall on the Korean Peninsula in the fall of 2016, resulting in record-breaking rainfall in southeastern Korea. In particular, the Ulsan metropolitan region experienced the most severe floods due to heavy rainfall of 319 mm for just 3 h. The heavy rainfall was possibly associated with the mountainous southeastern Korea topography and the warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the East China Sea. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was used to investigate the effects of topography and SST anomalies through high-resolution numerical experiments. Simulation using original topography showed more rainfall on the windward and less on the leeward slope compared to the experiment with reduced topography around Ulsan. The moist flow in the typhoon was raised by orographic uplift, enhancing precipitation on the windward side and summits of the mountains. The orographically induced updraft extended to the mid-troposphere and contributed to the upward vertical moisture flux associated with rainfall. Therefore, the mountainous topography around Ulsan affected the local change in rainfall induced by the simulated typhoon. In addition, SST on the track of the typhoon controlled storm intensity and caused extreme precipitation changes. The experiment using the original SST in the East China Sea simulated less decayed typhoons and produced more precipitation compared to the experiment wherein the positive SST anomaly in the East China Sea was removed. The warm SST anomaly hindered the weakening of the typhoon moving northward to the mid-latitudes. At landfall, the stronger typhoon contained more water vapor, transported more moisture inland, and generated increased precipitation.

Abstract Biomedical databases grow by more than a thousand new publications every day. The large volume of biomedical literature that is being published at an unprecedented rate hinders the discovery of relevant knowledge from keywords of interest to gather new insights and form hypotheses. A text-mining tool, PubTator, helps to automatically annotate bioentities, such as species, chemicals, genes, and diseases, from PubMed abstracts and full-text articles. However, the manual re-organization and analysis of bioentities is a non-trivial and highly time-consuming task. ChexMix was designed to extract the unique identifiers of bioentities from query results. Herein, ChexMix was used to construct a taxonomic tree with allied species among Korean native plants and to extract the medical subject headings unique identifier of the bioentities, which co-occurred with the keywords in the same literature. ChexMix discovered the allied species related to a keyword of interest and experimentally proved its usefulness for multi-species analysis.

As the term X(Everything)+AI indicates, AI is applied in every aspect of current societies. Likewise, the military requirements for AI are increasing as well. AIs that automatically detect and classify objects are required for surveillance and reconnaissance. Especially in terms of naval operation, identifying types of warships and recognizing mounted armaments have significance as the first step of the operation. This study is the proposal of an AI model that can identify warships’ type and weapon by analyzing video information taken on sea, and evaluate threat priority and response level. The proposed model is based on Mask RCNN, the Image Segmentation model, but was designed in a lightweight version, so that it could be used on a platform of the vessel where the use of high performing computers is limited. To lightweight the model, the former backbone was replaced with MobileNetV2, and the convolution operation of the RPN was replaced with Depthwise Separable Convolution operation, which operates respectively in each channel. The lightweight Mask RCNN model showed 64% lower number of parameters compared to the base model. However, its mAP, the classification accuracy, was similar with the base model.

Abstract A new concept of read-out method for ferroelectric random-access memory (FeRAM) using a graphene layer as the channel material of bottom-gated field effect transistor structure is demonstrated experimentally. The transconductance of the graphene channel is found to change its sign depending on the direction of spontaneous polarization (SP) in the underlying ferroelectric layer. This indicates that the memory state of FeRAM, specified by the SP direction of the ferroelectric layer, can be sensed unambiguously with transconductance measurements. With the proposed read-out method, it is possible to construct an array of ferroelectric memory cells in the form of a cross-point structure where the transconductance of a crossing cell can be measured selectively without any additional selector. This type of FeRAM can be a plausible solution for fabricating high speed, ultra-low power, long lifetime, and high density 3D stackable non-volatile memory.

Lymphangiomas are benign tumors that results from congenital malformation of lymphatic vessels. They are generally found in the neck and axilla. When they involve multiple locations, they present as lymphangiomatosis syndrome. Generalized lymphangiomatosis associated with mucinous cystadenoma of the ovary is a very rare condition. This study describes a 13-year-old girl with lymphangiomatosis of spleen, right fallopian tube and abdominal wall associated with mucinous cystadenoma of the right ovary. Contrast-enhanced abdominopelvic computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance image showed a multiple cystic splenic mass and huge abdominopelvic cystic mass. Splenectomy, excision of right ovary and fallopian tube mass, and excision of abdominal wall mass were performed without any complications.

Background This study investigated the prevalence and impact of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) vitamin D) deficiency in critically ill Korean patients with traumatic injuries. Methods This prospective observational cohort study assessed the 25(OH) vitamin D status of consecutive trauma patients admitted to the trauma intensive care unit (TICU) of Kyungpook National University Hospital between January and December 2018. We analyzed the prevalence of 25(OH) vitamin D deficiency and its impact on clinical outcomes. Results There were no significant differences in the duration of mechanical ventilation (MV), lengths of TICU and hospital stays, and rates of nosocomial infection and mortality between patients with 25(OH) vitamin D

Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) is one of the human’s most common malaria parasites. P. vivax is exceedingly difficult to control and eliminate due to the existence of extravascular reservoirs and recurring infections from latent liver stages. Traditionally, licorice compounds have been widely investigated against viral and infectious diseases and exhibit some promising results to combat these diseases. In the present study, computational approaches are utilized to study the effect of licorice compounds against P. vivax Duffy binding protein (DBP) to inhibit the malarial invasion to human red blood cells (RBCs). The main focus is to block the DBP binding site to Duffy antigen receptor chemokines (DARC) of RBC to restrict the formation of the DBP–DARC complex. A molecular docking study was performed to analyze the interaction of licorice compounds with the DARC binding site of DBP. Furthermore, the triplicates of molecular dynamic simulation studies for 100 ns were carried out to study the stability of representative docked complexes. The leading compounds such as licochalcone A, echinatin, and licochalcone B manifest competitive results against DBP. The blockage of the active region of DBP resulting from these compounds was maintained throughout the triplicates of 100 ns molecular dynamic (MD) simulation, maintaining stable hydrogen bond formation with the active site residues of DBP. Therefore, the present study suggests that licorice compounds might be good candidates for novel agents against DBP-mediated RBC invasion of P. vivax.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak affected the utilization and management of blood products in hospitals. Blood shortages occurred owing to social distancing policies and reduction in blood donors. However, only a few studies examined whether these changes affected blood usage and transfusion patterns. We retrospectively reviewed blood component usage according to hospital departments and phases of surgery in transfused patients admitted between 1 March 2019 and 28 February 2021, in a single center in Anyang, Korea. We also analyzed the length of hospital stay and mortality to determine prognosis. In 2020, 32,050 blood components were transfused to 2877 patients, corresponding to 15.8% and 11.8% less than the rates in 2019, respectively. Postoperative usage of blood products significantly decreased in 2020 (3.87 ± 6.50) compared to 2019 (7.12 ± 21.71) (p = 0.047). The length of hospital stay of the patients who underwent postoperative transfusion in 2019 (n = 197) was 13.97 ± 11.95 days, which was not significantly different from that in 2020 (n = 167), i.e., 16.44 ± 17.90 days (p = 0.118). Further, 9 of 197 postoperative transfusion patients died in 2019, while 8 of 167 patients died in 2020 (p = 0.920). The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in limited blood supply and reduced postoperative transfusions; however, patient prognosis was not affected.

Surface imprinting used for protein recognition in functional cavities is highly effective in imprinting biomacromolecules to avoid template encapsulation during the formation of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) matrix. Herein, we introduce a facile surface-imprinting method based on two-step spin-coating and photopolymerization to design highly efficient imprinted sites on polymeric films to detect trypsin (TRY). Well-distributed template imprinting is successfully achieved for maximized sensing responses by controlling the composition of functional monomers and crosslinkers in the precursor solution and the concentration of TRY in the imprinting solution. The MIP film exhibits higher sensitivity (−841 ± 65 Hz/(μg/mL)) with a coefficient of determination of 0.970 and a higher imprinting factor of 4.5 in a 0.24 µg/mL TRY solution compared to the nonimprinted polymer (NIP) film. Moreover, the limit of detection and limit of quantification are calculated to be 25.33 and 84.42 ng/mL, respectively. Finally, the selectivity coefficient is within the range of 3.90–6.78 for TRY against other proteins. These sensing properties are superior to those of the corresponding nonimprinted polymer matrix. Thus, the proposed facile surface-imprinting method is highly effective for protein imprinting with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Purpose We evaluated the risk factors for progression to chronic complicated bronchopleural fistula (BPF) after pulmonary resection using follow-up CT. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed 45 cases with BPF that had undergone pulmonary resection during 2010-2018. We compared the clinical and radiological characteristics of those with complicated BPF (n = 24) and those without complicated (sterilized) BPF (n = 21). The clinical and radiological risk factors for progression to chronic complicated BPF were examined by logistic regression analysis. Results The thickness of the pleural cavity wall (p = 0.022), the size of the pleural cavity (p = 0.029), and the size increase of BPF on follow-up (p = 0.012) were significantly different between the two groups. The risk factors for progression to chronic complicated BPF were age > 70 years (odds ratio, 6.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.2–33.7), the thickness of the cavity wall > 5 mm (odds ratio, 52.5; 95% confidence interval, 5.1–545.4), and an increase in the size of the pleural cavity on follow-up CT (odds ratio, 12.5; 95% confidence interval, 2.1–73.5), only in the univariate analysis. Conclusion The risk factors for progression to chronic complicated BPF can be evaluated using follow-up CT.

Training models by minimizing surrogate loss functions with gradient-based algorithms is a standard approach in various vision tasks. This strategy often leads to suboptimal solutions due to the gap between the target evaluation metrics and surrogate loss functions. In this paper, we propose a framework to learn a surrogate loss function that approximates the evaluation metric with correlated gradients. We observe that the correlated gradients significantly benefit the gradient-based algorithms to improve the quality of solutions. We verify the effectiveness of our method in various tasks such as multi-class classification, ordinal regression, and pose estimation with three evaluation metrics and five datasets. Our extensive experiments showed that our method outperforms conventional loss functions and surrogate loss learning methods.

Abstract We report a robust and continuous oil/water separation with nanostructured glass microfiber (GMF) membranes modified by oxygen plasma treatment and self-assembled monolayer coating with vertical polymerization. The modified GMF membrane had a nanostructured surface and showed excellent superhydrophobicity. With an appropriate membrane thickness, a high water intrusion pressure ( 99%). Under simulated industrial conditions, the modified GMF membrane exhibited robust chemical stability against strong acidic/alkaline solutions and corrosive environments. The proposed superhydrophobic composite coating technique is simple, low cost, environmentally friendly, and suitable for the mass production of scalable three-dimensional surfaces. Moreover, its stability and customizable functionality offers considerable potential for a wide range of novel applications.

ABSTRACT: Till now, there is only one recorded species for the subtribe Physoderina from Korea. Two species with two genera, Lachnoderma asperum Bates, 1883 and Physodera unicolor Ma, Shi & Liang, 2017 of the subtribe Physoderina are newly recorded in Korea. Taxonomic key, adult habitus, genitalia, distributional information, and reviewed remarks are provided.

As Truncatipennes ground beetles of the subfamily Lebiinae, genus Amphimenes Bates, 1873 is first recorded from Cambodia by Amphimenes (Amphinemes) rugulipennis (Bates, 1892) and a new species Amphimenes (Amphinemes) wooshini sp. nov. is described here. Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a highly malignant carcinoma prevalent in children and most frequent in the second decade of life. It mostly occurs due to t(11;22) (q24;q12) translocation. This translocation encodes the oncogenic fusion protein EWS/FLI (Friend leukemia integration 1 transcription factor), which acts as an aberrant transcription factor to deregulate target genes essential for cancer. Traditionally, flavonoids from plants have been investigated against viral and cancerous diseases and have shown some promising results to combat these disorders. In the current study, representative flavonoid compounds from various subclasses are selected and used to disrupt the RNA-binding motif of EWS, which is required for EWS/FLI fusion. By blocking the RNA-binding motif of EWS, it might be possible to combat ES. Therefore, molecular docking experiments validated the binding interaction patterns and structural behaviors of screened flavonoid compounds within the active region of the Ewing sarcoma protein (EWS). Furthermore, pharmacogenomics analysis was used to investigate potential drug interactions with Ewing sarcoma-associated genes. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the stability of the best selected docked complexes. Taken together, daidzein, kaempferol, and genistein exhibited a result comparable to ifosfamide in the proposed in silico study and can be further analyzed as possible candidate compounds in biological in vitro studies against ES.

SMURF2 is a member of the HECT family of E3 ubiquitin ligases that have important roles as a negative regulator of transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β) signaling through ubiquitin‐mediated degradation of TGF‐β receptor I. However, the regulatory mechanism of SMURF2 is largely unknown. In this study, we identified that micro(mi)R‐195 and miR‐497 putatively target SMURF2 using several target prediction databases. Both miR‐195 and miR‐497 bind to the 3′‐UTR of the SMURF2 mRNA and inhibit SMURF2 expression. Furthermore, miR‐195 and miR‐497 regulate SMURF2‐dependent TβRI ubiquitination and cause the activation of the TGF‐β signaling pathway in lung cancer cells. Upregulation of miR‐195 and miR‐497 significantly reduced cell viability and colony formation through the activation of TGF‐β signaling. Interestingly, miR‐195 and miR‐497 also reduced the invasion ability of lung cancer cells when cells were treated with TGF‐β1. Subsequent in vivo studies in xenograft nude mice model revealed that miR‐195 and miR‐497 repress tumor growth. These findings demonstrate that miR‐195 and miR‐497 act as a tumor suppressor by suppressing ubiquitination‐mediated degradation of TGF‐β receptors through SMURF2, and suggest that miR‐195 and miR‐497 are potential therapeutic targets for lung cancer.

This study investigates the impact of the sea surface temperature (SST) on the forecast of two typhoons, which consecutively hit South Korea in 2020. SST data were obtained from the Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) version 2 and HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model/Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (HYCOM/NCODA; GLBy0.08/expt_93.0). When verified using in situ observational data, the OISST data did not accurately estimate the changes in SST during each typhoon’s landfall period compared to the HYCOM data since it has a relatively low temporal resolution. To investigate the impact of these two SST data on typhoon forecasts, we conducted sensitivity experiments using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The results showed that simulated typhoon intensities were significantly improved in the simulations with HYCOM data (HY runs), while typhoon track forecast performances were similar in both runs. In addition, the forecast performances of the maximum wind speed at 10 m during the typhoon landfall period were improved in the HY runs. Therefore, this study showed that the overall typhoon intensity and forecast performances during the landfall period could be improved when the higher temporal-resolution SST data were prescribed in the model boundary conditions for a better representation of typhoon-induced SST changes.

In this study, we reviewed the genera of the tribe Hylaspini with the diagnostic characters. Among them, the genus with species, Morphosphaera Baly, Morphosphaera sumatrana Jacoby, is reported for the first time from Korea. In addition, a key to the genera of Korean Hylaspini is provided. In addition, the photographs of adult habitus and male genitalia of M. sumatrana Jacoby are given.

Abstract Purpose Maxillary bone grafts and implantations have increased over recent years despite a lack of maxillary bone quality and quantity. The number of patients referred for oroantral fistula (OAF) due to implant or bone graft failure has increased, and in patients with an oroantral fistula, the pedicled buccal fat pad is viewed as a robust, reliable option. This study was conducted to document the usefulness of buccal fat pad grafts for oroantral fistula closure. Materials and methods We retrospectively studied 25 patients with OAF treated with a buccal fat pad graft from 2015 to 2018. Sex, age, OAF location, cause, duration, presence of systemic disease, smoking, previous dental surgery, and side effects were investigated. Results A total of 25 patients were studied. Mean patient age was 54.8 years, and the male to female ratio was 19:6. Causes of oroantral fistula were cyst enucleation, tumor resection, implant removal, bone graft failure, and extraction. Excellent results were obtained in 23 (92%) of the 25 patients. In the other two patients that both smoked, a small fistula was observed during follow-up. No recurrence of oroantral fistula was observed after 2 months to 1 year of follow-up. Conclusions The incidence of oroantral fistula is increasing due to implant and bone graft failures. Oroantral fistula closure using a pedicled buccal fat pad was found to have a high success rate.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to review the clinical features of oromaxillofacial infections in patients presenting to a hospital emergency ward, to identify the key factors affecting the requirement for hospitalization, and the potential risk factors predisposing to a prolonged length of hospital stay. Methods A retrospective medical record review of the 598 patients treated for oromaxillofacial infection from 2013 to 2017 at the oral and maxillofacial surgery department, Yangsan Pusan National University Hospital, was conducted. The following information was collected from each patient: sex, age, past medical history, site of infection, etiology, admission or outpatient care, level of C-reactive protein (mg/dL), fascial spaces involved, treatment method, and duration of hospitalization. Chi-squared tests were used to identify risk factors, which were further analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Results A total of 606 patients were eligible for inclusion in the study, of which eight were excluded due to having incomplete charts; thus, 598 patients were included: 55% were male, mean patient age was 47.1 ± 19.9 years, and 12.9% of patients were diabetic. Furthermore, 71.2% of patients had infection originating in the mandible; the most common tooth of origin was lower posterior, and 29.8% of patients were hospitalized. Risk factors for hospital admission were elderly patients with concurrent disease, elevated C-reactive protein level, and multiple-space infection in the oromaxillofacial area. The duration of hospitalization was correlated with both diabetes and age. Conclusions The requirement for hospital admission is determined by the severity of the infection; even severe infections, once treated with appropriate surgery, have no relation to the length of hospital stay. The important risk factors for increased duration of hospitalization are diabetes mellitus and older age. The understanding of risk factors associated with a prolonged hospital stay during the treatment of oromaxillofacial infection will aid in treatment planning as well as highlight the importance of adequate diabetes control in patients at risk of such infection.

Chinese egret (Egretta eulophotes) is classified as an endangered species (VU, vulnerable) and is limited to Far East. This species breeds especially offshore in China, Russia, and the Korean peninsula. We analyzed partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 of the bird from five major breeding sites in South Korea. The results indicate that there were only 10 mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 haplotypes and that their genetic diversity is very low. In addition, the distribution pattern of the haplotypes is patchy, indicating that at least a population may be distinct in its maternal origin and migration route. The results may be used as a baseline of establishing the conservation program and international cooperation for this species. This study was conducted to review the genus Apristus, which has been poorly known in Korea until now, comprising only one species, A. striatus Motschulsky. In this article, we reviewed the genus with the detail diagnostic characters. Among them, A. cuprascens Bates is recorded in Korea for the first time. In addition, a key to the Korean Apristus species is provided with new points of easy identification of this genus using drawing and photos, including the redescription and diagnostic characters. Intrathoracic ectopic kidney is an uncommon congenital anomaly, accounting for approximately 5% of all ectopic kidneys. An intrathoracic ectopic kidney and pulmonary sequestration associated with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a very rare condition. This study describes a patient with a right intrathoracic ectopic kidney and pulmonary sequestration associated with right sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography showed a right intrathoracic ectopic kidney and lung mass with herniation of the right lobe of the liver through the right diaphragmatic defect. The herniated intestine, the right lobe of the liver and the right intrathoracic ectopic kidney were relocated into the abdomen, followed by excision of the pulmonary mass and closure of the diaphragmatic defect with Permacol.

In this work, sensing behaviors and mechanisms of two crosslinked copolymers with dimethylamine and dimethylamide functional groups were compared and investigated for their ability to detect hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. The crosslinked copolymer films were photopolymerized on quartz crystal electrodes using a micro-contact printing technique. The gas sensing behaviors were analyzed by measuring resonant frequency (Δf) of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The HCl binding capacity of photopolymerized films, with a mass between 4.6 and 5.9 μg, was optimized. Under optimized film mass conditions, the poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (DMAEMA-co-EGDMA), poly(DMAEMA-co-EGDMA), film, C2-DMA, showed a 13.9-fold higher binding capacity than the poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, poly(DMAA-co-EGDMA), film, C0-DMA, during HCl gas adsorption. HCl gas was effectively adsorbed on the C2-DMA film because of the formation of tertiary amine salts through protonation and strong ionic bonding. Furthermore, the C2-DMA film exhibited excellent sensitivity, of 2.51 (ng/μg) (1/ppm), and selectivity coefficient (k* = 12.6 for formaldehyde and 13.5 for hydrogen fluoride) compared to the C0-DMA film. According to the experimental results, and due to its high functionality and stability, the C2-DMA film-coated QC electrode could be used as an HCl gas sensor, with low-cost and simple preparation, in future endeavors.

Abstract Background There are no objective and accurate rating tools for permanent impairment of traumatized ankles. The purpose of this study is to assess the role of 18F-Sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) bone scans in evaluating patients with limited ankle range of motion (ROM) after trauma. Methods 18F-NaF PET/CT was performed in 121 patients (75 men, 46 women; mean age: 45.8) who had ROM 2.5 was automatically obtained from the 3D volume that included the ankle joint. The maximum & mean SUV (SUVmax & SUVmean), and the total lesion activity (TLA) were measured. Results The median period from injury to performing 18F-NaF PET/CT was 290 days. The causes of injury were as follows: fracture (N = 95), Achilles tendon rupture (N = 12), and ligament injury (N = 12). Hot uptake in the ankle was seen in 113 of 121 patients. The fracture group had higher SUVmax, SUVmean, and TLA values than the non-fracture group. More limited ROM correlated with higher hot-uptake parameters (SUVmax, SUVmean, TLA). In subgroup analysis, the same correlations were present in the fracture, but not in the non-fracture group. Conclusions 18F-NaF PET/CT can provide considerable information in impairment evaluations of limited ankle ROM, particularly in fracture around the ankle. Thus, 18F-NaF bone PET/CT may provide an additional option as an objective imaging tool in disability assessment after ankle injury.

Ingestion of a foreign body is a frequently encountered clinical problem in children. Most swallowed foreign bodies are spontaneously excreted in the feces without intervention. Fewer than 1% of ingested foreign bodies lead to bleeding, obstruction or perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, mandating surgical intervention. This study describes a 7-year-old boy who presented with duodenal perforation caused by ingestion of a lollipop stick and who was successfully managed by surgery. Abstract Background Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most commonly occurring malignant tumor in the oral cavity. In South Korea, it occurs most frequently in the mandible, tongue, maxilla, buccal mucosa, other areas of the oral cavity, and lips. Radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is the most widely used reconstruction method for the buccal mucosal defect. The scar of the forearm donor, however, is highly visible and unsightly, and a secondary surgical site is needed when such technique is applied. For these reasons, buccal fat pad (BFP) flap has been commonly used for closing post-surgical excision sites since the recent decades because of its reliability, ease of harvest, and low complication rate. Case presentation In the case reported herein, BFP flap was used to reconstruct a cheek mucosal defect after excision. The defect was completely covered by the BFP flap, without any complications. Conclusion Discussed herein is the usefulness of BFP flap for the repair of the cheek mucosal defect. Also, further studies are needed to determine the possibility of using BFP flap when the defect is deep, and the maximum volume that can be harvested considering the changes in volume with age.
