Abstract Background Renal cold ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI), a pathological process during kidney transplantation, may result in delayed graft function and negatively impact graft survival and function. There is a lack of an accurate and non-invasive tool for evaluating the degree of CIRI. Multi-parametric MRI has been widely used to detect and evaluate kidney injury. The machine learning algorithms introduced the opportunity to combine biomarkers from different MRI metrics into a single classifier. Objective To evaluate the performance of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging for grading renal injury in a rat model of renal cold ischemia-reperfusion injury using a machine learning approach. Methods Eighty male SD rats were selected to establish a renal cold ischemia -reperfusion model, and all performed multiparametric MRI scans (DWI, IVIM, DKI, BOLD, T1mapping and ASL), followed by pathological analysis. A total of 25 parameters of renal cortex and medulla were analyzed as features. The pathology scores were divided into 3 groups using K-means clustering method. Lasso regression was applied for the initial selecting of features. The optimal features and the best techniques for pathological grading were obtained. Multiple classifiers were used to construct models to evaluate the predictive value for pathology grading. Results All rats were categorized into mild, moderate, and severe injury group according the pathologic scores. The 8 features that correlated better with the pathologic classification were medullary and cortical Dp, cortical T2*, cortical Fp, medullary T2*, ∆T1, cortical RBF, medullary T1. The accuracy(0.83, 0.850, 0.81, respectively) and AUC (0.95, 0.93, 0.90, respectively) for pathologic classification of the logistic regression, SVM, and RF are significantly higher than other classifiers. For the logistic model and combining logistic, RF and SVM model of different techniques for pathology grading, the stable and perform are both well. Based on logistic regression, IVIM has the highest AUC (0.93) for pathological grading, followed by BOLD(0.90). Conclusion The multi-parametric MRI-based machine learning model could be valuable for noninvasive assessment of the degree of renal injury.

PurposeWe investigated the capability and imaging criteria of T1 mapping and arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI to identify renal injury in patients with liver cirrhosis.MethodsWe recruited 27 patients with cirrhosis and normal renal function (cirrhosis-NR), 10 with cirrhosis and renal dysfunction (cirrhosis-RD) and 23 normal controls (NCs). All participants were examined via renal T1 mapping and ASL imaging. Renal blood flow (RBF) derived from ASL was measured from the renal cortex, and T1 values were measured from the renal parenchyma (cortex and medulla). MRI parameters were compared between groups. Diagnostic performances for detecting renal impairment were statistically analyzed.ResultsCortical T1 (cT1) and medullary T1 (mT1) were significantly lower in the NCs than in the cirrhosis-NR group. The cortical RBF showed no significant changes between the NCs and cirrhosis-NR group but was markedly decreased in the cirrhosis-RD group. The areas under the curve (AUCs) for discriminating cirrhosis-NR from NCs were 0.883 and 0.826 by cT1 and mT1, respectively. Cortical RBF identified cirrhosis-RD with AUC of 0.978, and correlated with serum creatinine (r = −0.334) and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (r = 0.483). A classification and regression tree based on cortical RBF and cT1 achieved 85% accuracy in detecting renal impairment in the cirrhosis.ConclusionRenal T1 values might be sensitive predictors of early renal impairment in patients with cirrhosis-NR. RBF enabled quantifying renal perfusion impairment in patients with cirrhosis-RD. The diagnostic algorithm based on cortical RBF and T1 values allowed detecting renal injury during cirrhosis.

Abstract Background T1 mapping can potentially quantitatively assess the intrinsic properties of tumors. This study was conducted to explore the ability of T1 mapping in distinguishing cervical cancer type, grade, and stage and compare the diagnostic performance of T1 mapping with diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI). Methods One hundred fifty-seven patients with pathologically confirmed cervical cancer were enrolled in this prospectively study. T1 mapping and DKI were performed. The native T1, difference between native and postcontrast T1 (T1diff), mean kurtosis (MK), mean diffusivity (MD), and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were calculated. Abstract Background This study seeks to assess the utility of T1 and T2 mapping in distinguishing metastatic lymph nodes from reactive lymphadenopathy in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) as a comparison. Methods Between July 2017 and November 2019, 46 HNSCC patients underwent neck MRI inclusive of T1 and T2 mapping and DWI. Quantitative measurements derived from preoperative T1 and T2 mapping and DWI of metastatic and non-metastatic lymph nodes were compared using independent samples t-test or Mann–Whitney U test. Receiver operating characteristic curves and the DeLong test were employed to determine the most effective diagnostic methodology. Abstract Personalized news recommendation is an important technology to help users obtain news information they are interested in and alleviate information overload. In recent years, news recommendation has been increasingly widely studied and has achieved remarkable success in improving the news reading experience of users. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of personalized news recommendation approaches. Firstly, we introduce personalized news recommendation systems according to different needs and analyze the characteristics. And then, a three-part research framework on personalized news recommendation is put forward. Based on the framework, the knowledge and methods involved in each part are analyzed in detail, including news datasets and processing techniques, prediction models, news ranking and display. On this basis, we focus on news recommendation methods based on different types of graph structure learning, including user–news interaction graph, knowledge graph and social relationship graph. Lastly, the challenges of the current news recommendation are analyzed and the prospect of the future research direction is presented.

Abstract Objectives To validate the correlation between histopathological findings and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) fat fraction (FF) and water T2 mapping in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). Methods The study included 13 patients with histopathologically confirmed IIM who underwent dedicated thigh qMRI scanning within 1 month before open muscle biopsy. For the biopsied muscles, FF derived from the iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares estimation quantitation (IDEAL-IQ) and T2 time from T2 mapping with chemical shift selective fat saturation were measured using a machine learning software. Individual histochemical and immunohistochemical slides were evaluated using a 5-point Likert score. Inter-reader agreement and the correlation between qMRI markers and histopathological scores were analyzed. Results Readers showed good to perfect agreement in qMRI measurements and most histopathological scores. FF of the biopsied muscles was positively correlated with the amount of fat in histopathological slides (p = 0.031). Prolonged T2 time was associated with the degree of variation in myofiber size, inflammatory cell infiltration, and amount of connective tissues (p ≤ 0.008 for all). Conclusions Using the machine learning-based muscle segmentation method, a positive correlation was confirmed between qMRI biomarkers and histopathological findings of patients with IIM. This finding provides a basis for using qMRI as a non-invasive tool in the diagnostic workflow of IIM. Relevance statement By using ML-based muscle segmentation, a correlation between qMRI biomarkers and histopathology was found in patients with IIM: qMRI is a potential non-invasive tool in this clinical setting. Abstract Background The circle of Willis (CoW) plays a significant role in intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS). This study investigated the relationship between different types of CoW, atherosclerosis plaque features, and acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods We investigated 97 participants with AIS or transient ischemic attacks (TIA) underwent pre- and post-contrast 3T vessel wall cardiovascular magnetic resonance within 7 days of the onset of symptoms. The culprit plaque characteristics (including enhancement grade, enhancement ratio, high signal in T1, irregularity of plaque surface, and normalized wall index), and vessel remodeling (including arterial remodeling ratio and positive remodeling) for lesions were evaluated. The anatomic structures of the anterior and the posterior sections of the CoW (A-CoW and P-CoW) were also evaluated. The plaque features were compared among them. The plaque features were also compared between AIS and TIA patients. Finally, univariate and multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate the independent risk factors for AIS. Result Patients with incomplete A-CoW showed a higher plaque enhancement ratio (P = 0.002), enhancement grade (P = 0.01), and normalized wall index (NWI) (P = 0.018) compared with the patients with complete A-CoW. A higher proportion of patients with incomplete symptomatic P-CoW demonstrated more culprit plaques with high T1 signals (HT1S) compared with those with complete P-CoW (P = 0.013). Incomplete A-CoW was associated with a higher enhancement grade of the culprit plaques [odds ratio (OR):3.84; 95% CI: 1.36–10.88, P = 0.011], after adjusting for clinical risk factors such as age, sex, smoking, hypertension, hyperlipemia, and diabetes mellitus. Incomplete symptomatic P-CoW was associated with a higher probability of HT1S (OR:3.88; 95% CI: 1.12–13.47, P = 0.033), after adjusting for clinical risk factors such as age, sex, smoking, hypertension, hyperlipemia, and diabetes mellitus. Drift-kinetic effects of fusion-born alpha particles on the n = 1 ( n is the toroidal mode number) resistive wall mode (RWM) is numerically investigated for a recent design of the ITER 10 MA steady state plasma scenario, utilizing a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD)-kinetic hybrid toroidal model. While the fluid theory predicts unstable RWM as the normalized plasma pressure β _N exceeds the no-wall Troyon limit and with the mode growth rate monotonically increasing with β _N , inclusion of the drift-kinetic contribution of trapped alphas qualitatively modifies the behavior by stabilizing the mode at high β _N . In fact, a complete stabilization of the n = 1 RWM up to the ideal-wall Troyon limit is found. On the other hand, another unstable branch—the alpha-driven n = 1 fishbone mode (FB)—is identified in the high- β _N regime, with the mode frequency matching that of the toroidal precession frequency of trapped alphas. Fast plasma toroidal flow however helps mitigate the FB instability. Kinetic stabilization of the RWM and flow stabilization of the (alpha-triggered) FB result in an enhancement of β _N from the design value of 3.22–3.52 for the ITER scenario considered, while still maintaining stable plasma operation against the aforementioned MHD instabilities.

ObjectivesTo evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of bile duct adenoma.MethodsThe data of 28 patients [with 32 pathologically confirmed bile duct adenomas, including 15 with malignant change (malignant group) and 17 without malignant change (benign adenoma group)] were retrospectively reviewed. Abdominal MRI was performed for all patients; in addition, dynamic enhanced MRI was performed for 18 lesions. The MRI features, including lesion location, maximum size, morphology, signal characteristics, enhancement type, and appearance of the bile duct, were assessed by two abdominal radiologists. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were measured and compared.ResultsOf the 32 bile duct adenomas, 22 (68.75%) involved the common bile duct (CBD). While 14/32 (43.75%) lesions presented as focal eccentric-type masses, 9/32 (28.13%) presented as plaque-like masses, 4/32 (12.50%) as bile duct casting masses, and 5/32 (15.62%) as infiltrative masses. A frond-like superficial appearance was seen in 8/32 (25%) lesions. Infiltrative masses were significantly more common in the malignant group than in the benign adenoma group (P = 0.015). While 23/32 (71.88%) lesions were isointense on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), 24/32 (75%) were hyperintense on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI). Bile duct dilatation was present upstream of the lesion in all cases. Bile duct dilatation at the lesion was seen in 24/32 (75%) cases and downstream of the lesion in 6/32 (18.75%) cases. Of the 18 lesions that underwent dynamic enhanced MRI, 14 (77.78%) showed moderate enhancement and 13 (72.22%) showed persistent enhancement. On diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), 27/32 (84.37%) lesions showed hyperintensity. Mean ADC value was comparable between the malignant group and the benign adenoma group (P = 0.156).ConclusionsBile duct adenoma primarily presents as intraductal growth in the CBD, usually with bile duct dilatation at the lesion site or upstream to it. Most lesions are isointense on T1WI, are hyperintense on T2WI and DWI, and show moderate enhancement. A superficial frond-like appearance of the lesion and bile duct dilatation at the lesion or downstream to it might be characteristics of bile duct adenoma. An infiltrative appearance might indicate malignant transformation.

ObjectiveThe application value of T2 mapping in evaluating endometrial carcinoma (EMC) features remains unclear. The aim of the study was to determine the quantitative T2 values in EMC using a novel accelerated T2 mapping, and evaluate them for detection, classification,and grading of EMC.Materials and methodsFifty-six patients with pathologically confirmed EMC and 17 healthy volunteers were prospectively enrolled in this study. All participants underwent pelvic magnetic resonance imaging, including DWI and accelerated T2 mapping, before treatment. The T2 and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of different pathologic EMC features were extracted and compared. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to analyze the diagnostic efficacy of the T2 and ADC values in distinguishing different pathological features of EMC.ResultsThe T2 values and ADC values were significantly lower in EMC than in normal endometrium (bothl p < 0.05). The T2 and ADC values were significantly different between endometrioid adenocarcinoma (EA) and non-EA (both p < 0.05) and EMC tumor grades (all p < 0.05) but not for EMC clinical types (both p > 0.05) and depth of myometrial invasion (both p > 0.05). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was higher for T2 values than for ADC values in predicting grade 3 EA (0.939 vs. 0.764, p = 0.048). When combined T2 and ADC values, the AUC for predicting grade 3 EA showed a significant increase to 0.947 (p = 0.03) compared with those of ADC values. The T2 and ADC values were negatively correlated with the tumor grades (r = -0.706 and r = -0.537, respectively).ConclusionQuantitative T2 values demonstrate potential suitability in discriminating between EMC and normal endometrium, EA and non-EA, grade 3 EA and grade 1/2 EA. Combining T2 and ADC values performs better in predicting the histological grades of EA in comparison with ADC values alone.

Abstract Background We aimed to evaluate the correlation between the pathological changes and multi-parameter MRI characteristics of liver regeneration (LR) in a standard partial hepatectomy (PH) rat model. Methods Seventy Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: MR scan group (n = 14) and pathologic analysis (PA) group (n = 56). All 14 rats in the MR group underwent liver T1 mapping, T2 mapping, and diffusion kurtosis imaging before and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 14th, and 21st day after 70% hepatectomy. Purpose: Cold ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) is one of the most serious complications following renal transplantation. The current study investigated the feasibility of Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) imaging and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) in the evaluation of different degrees of renal cold ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat model.Methods: Seventy five rats were randomly divided into three groups (N = 25 for each group): T0: sham-operated group, T2/T4: CIRI groups with different cold ischemia hours (2, 4 h, respectively). The rat model of CIRI group was established by left kidney cold ischemia with right nephrectomy. All the rats received a baseline MRI before the surgery. Five rats in each group were randomly selected to undergo an MRI examination at 1 h, day 1, day 2 and day 5 after CIRI. The IVIM and BOLD parameters were studied in the renal cortex (CO), the outer stripe of the outer medulla (OSOM), and the inner stripe of the outer medulla (ISOM) followed by histological analysis to examine Paller scores, peritubular capillary (PTC) density, apoptosis rate and biochemical indicators to obtain the contents of serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA).Results: The D, D*, PF and T2* values in the CIRI groups were lower than those in the sham-operated group at all timepoints (all p < 0.05). The prolonged cold ischemia times resulted in gradually lower D, D*, PF and T2* values (all p < 0.05). The D and T2* values of cortex and OSOM in Group T0 and T2 returned to the baseline level (all p > 0.05) except Group T4. The D* and PF values of cortex, OSOM and ISOM in Group T2 and T4 still remained below the normal levels (all p < 0.05) except Group T0. D, D*, PF and T2* values were strongly correlated with histopathological (Paller scores, PTC density and apoptosis rate) and the biochemistry indicators (SOD and MDA) (|r|>0.6, p < 0.001). Abstract Background Previous studies have indicated that T1 relaxation time could be utilized for the analysis of tissue characteristics. T1 mapping technology has been gradually used on research of body tumor. In this study, the application of native T1 relaxation time for differentiating the histopathologic type, grade, and stage of rectal adenocarcinoma was investigated. Methods One hundred and twenty patients with pathologically confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma were retrospectively evaluated. All patients underwent high-resolution anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and T1 mapping sequences. Parameters of T1 relaxation time and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were measured between the different groups. The diagnostic power was evaluated though the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results The T1 and ADC values varied significantly between rectal mucinous adenocarcinoma (MC) and non-mucinous rectal adenocarcinoma (AC) ([1986.1 ± 163.3 ms] vs. [1562.3 ± 244.2 ms] and [1.38 ± 0.23 × 10−3mm2/s] vs. [1.03 ± 0.15 × 10−3mm2/s], respectively; P 0.05). No significant differences in T1 and ADC values were identified between the different T and N stage groups for both MC and AC (all P > 0.05). Conclusions Native T1 relaxation time can be used to discriminate MC from AC. The T1 relaxation time was helpful for differentiating the low- and high-grade of AC.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to identify risk factors for recurrence in patients with cervical cancer (CC) through quantitative T1 mapping.MethodsA cohort of 107 patients histopathologically diagnosed with CC at our institution between May 2018 and April 2021 was categorized into surgical and non-surgical groups. Patients in each group were further divided into recurrence and non-recurrence subgroups depending on whether they showed recurrence or metastasis within 3 years of treatment. The longitudinal relaxation time (native T1) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value of the tumor were calculated. The differences between native T1 and ADC values of the recurrence and non-recurrence subgroups were analyzed, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn for parameters with statistical differences. Logistic regression was performed for analysis of significant factors affecting CC recurrence. Recurrence-free survival rates were estimated by Kaplan–Meier analysis and compared using the log-rank test.ResultsThirteen and 10 patients in the surgical and non-surgical groups, respectively, showed recurrence after treatment. There were significant differences in native T1 values between the recurrence and non-recurrence subgroups in the surgical and non-surgical groups (P0.05). The areas under the ROC curve of native T1 values for discriminating recurrence of CC after surgical and non-surgical treatment were 0.742 and 0.780, respectively. Logistic regression analysis indicated that native T1 values were risk factors for tumor recurrence in the surgical and non-surgical groups (P=0.004 and 0.040, respectively). Compared with cut-offs, recurrence-free survival curves of patients with higher native T1 values of the two groups were significantly different from those with lower ones (P=0.000 and 0.016, respectively).ConclusionQuantitative T1 mapping could help identify CC patients with a high risk of recurrence, supplementing information on tumor prognosis other than clinicopathological features and providing the basis for individualized treatment and follow-up schemes.

Background and purposeNon-invasive and accurate assessment of intracranial arterial stenosis (ICAS) is important for the evaluation of intracranial atherosclerotic disease. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of 3D pointwise encoding time reduction magnetic resonance angiography (PETRA-MRA) and compare its performance with that of 3D time-of-flight (TOF) MRA and computed tomography angiography (CTA), using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the reference standard in measuring the degree of stenosis and lesion length.Materials and methodsThis single-center, prospective study included a total of 52 patients (mean age 57 ± 11 years, 27 men, 25 women) with 90 intracranial arterial stenoses who underwent PETRA-MRA, TOF-MRA, CTA, and DSA within 1 month. The degree of stenosis and lesion length were measured independently by two radiologists on these four datasets. The degree of stenosis was classified according to DSA measurement. Severe stenosis was defined as a single lesion with >70% diameter stenosis. The smaller artery stenosis referred to the stenosis, which occurred at the anterior cerebral artery, middle cerebral artery, and posterior cerebral artery, except for the first segment of them. The continuous variables were compared using paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed rank test. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used to assess the agreement between MRAs/CTA and DSA as well as inter-reader variabilities. The ICC value >0.80 indicated excellent agreement. The agreement of data was assessed further by Bland–Altman analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficients. When the difference between MRAs/CTA and DSA was statistically significant in the degree of stenosis, the measurement of MRAs/CTA was larger than that of DSA, which referred to the overestimation of MRAs/CTA for the degree of stenosis.ResultsThe four imaging methods exhibited excellent inter-reader agreement [intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) > 0.80]. PETRA-MRA was more consistent with DSA than with TOF-MRA and CTA in measuring the degree of stenosis (ICC = 0.94 vs. 0.79 and 0.89) and lesion length (ICC = 0.99 vs. 0.97 and 0.73). PETRA-MRA obtained the highest specificity and positive predictive value (PPV) than TOF-MRA and CTA for detecting stenosis of >50% and stenosis of >75%. TOF-MRA and CTA overestimated considerably the degree of stenosis compared with DSA (63.0% ± 15.8% and 61.0% ± 18.6% vs. 54.0% ± 18.6%, P < 0.01, respectively), whereas PETRA-MRA did not overestimate (P = 0.13). The degree of stenosis acquired on PETRA-MRA was also more consistent with that on DSA than with that on TOF-MRA and CTA in severe stenosis (ICC = 0.78 vs. 0.30 and 0.57) and smaller artery stenosis (ICC = 0.95 vs. 0.70 and 0.80). In anterior artery circulation stenosis, PETRA-MRA also achieved a little bigger ICC than TOF-MRA and CTA in measuring the degree of stenosis (0.93 vs. 0.78 and 0.88). In posterior artery circulation stenosis, PETRA-MRA had a bigger ICC than TOF-MRA (0.94 vs. 0.71) and a comparable ICC to CTA (0.94 vs. 0.91) in measuring the degree of stenosis.ConclusionPETRA-MRA is more accurate than TOF-MRA and CTA for the evaluation of intracranial stenosis and lesion length when using DSA as a reference standard. PETRA-MRA is a promising non-invasive tool for ICAS assessment.

Human-scale greenery has been heavily featured in the development of planning-related theories and research. Daily exposure to street greenery is proportionately greater than exposure to parks. Several case studies have estimated the green view index (GVI), which quantifies daily exposure to street-side greenery, at the city-scale. However, the street-side greenery distribution is uneven. The relationship between the GVI and the surrounding environment has rarely been discussed. Here, we investigate the differentiation of street greenery from the physical features of a street and examine how the surrounding environment affects the physical appearance of eye-level greenery. In this work, we analyzed the GVI using the internet data crawling approach and obtained 12,232 panoramic street view images from Baidu Map for the urban zones of Hangzhou, China. A range of 17 surrounding environmental characteristics are integrated with multisource geographic data to analyze their relationship with the GVI at the microscale. Spatial econometric models are explored to provide insights into the underlying mechanisms associated with the GVI. The results showed that the surrounding environment exhibited a strong role in the physical appearance of eye-level greenness. There are two pathways through which surrounding environmental characteristics (the nature of land use and the enclosure of the street) affect the distribution of GVI. Four factors proved to be important: scenic protection policies and ecological renewal projects, vertical and horizontal green characteristics of different land uses, and facade designs dominated by enclosed exterior walls or railing walls. Interesting approaches are presented to rationally implement activities related to these factors. The urban green design process should be facilitated in terms of the trade-off between greenery and optimum land use. These findings can be useful in drafting appropriate policies and increasing eye-level greenery in cities.

Polycentric urban development has become popular worldwide as expected to generate greater agglomeration externality and facilitate socioeconomic achievements. Despite much insightful work on urban polycentricity in coastal agglomerations or megacities, few studies have focused on how polycentric urban development affects landscape sustainability in vulnerable island cities. This paper characterized the urban polycentricity from the perspective of morphological and functional dimensions during 1990–2020 in Yuhuan island city, China, and quantified the association between polycentric urban variables and island landscape changes by spatial regression. The results showed that there was a mismatch in development between the morphological and functional polycentricity, in which the functional dimension was lagging. In response, island landscape patterns became fragmented and scattered. With the application of GWR models, the effects of two polycentric factors on island landscape changes varied spatially and temporally. The stronger relationships between them were identified in regions where more heterogeneous patterns were presented, such as the subcenters and their surroundings and reclamation areas. These trends were mainly attributed to industrial suburbanization and the development of new economic zone and Damaiyu port. Our findings call for a more balanced functional urban polycentricity; and local-specific landscape effects should be scheduled in island planning practice and sustainable development.

BackgroundPseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL) is widely used to quantify cerebral blood flow (CBF) abnormalities in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). T1-mapping techniques assess microstructural characteristics in various pathologic changes, but their application in AD remains in the exploratory stage. We hypothesized that combining quantitative CBF and T1 values would generate diagnostic results with higher accuracy than using either method alone in discriminating AD patients from cognitively normal control (NC) subjects.Materials and methodsA total of 45 patients diagnosed with AD and 33 NC subjects were enrolled, and cognitive assessment was performed for each participant according to the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). T1-weighted magnetization-prepared 2 rapid acquisition gradient echo (MP2RAGE) and pCASL sequence were scanned on a 3T MR scanner. A brain morphometric analysis was integrated into prototype sequence, providing tissue classification and morphometric segmentation results. Quantitative CBF and T1 values of each brain region were automatically generated inline after data acquisition. Independent samples t-test was used to compare regional CBF and T1 values controlled by false discovery rate correction (corrected p < 0.01). The model with combined CBF and T1 values was compared with the individual index by performing receiver operating characteristic curves analysis. The associations between the MMSE score and CBF and T1 values of the brain were investigated using partial correlations.ResultsCerebral blood flow of the right caudate nucleus (RCc) and left hippocampus (LHc) was significantly lower in the AD group compared with the NC group, while the T1 values of the right caudate nucleus (RCt) and left hippocampus (LHt) increased in the AD group. Prediction accuracies of 73.1, 77.2, 75.9, and 81.3% were achieved for each of the above parameters, respectively. In distinguishing patients from controls using the corresponding optimized cut-off values, most combinations of parameters were elevated (area under curve = 0.775–0.894). The highest area under curve value was 0.944, by combining RCc, LHc, RCt, and LHt.ConclusionIn this preliminary study, the combined model based on pCASL and T1-mapping improved the diagnostic performance of discriminating AD and NC groups. T1-mapping may become a competitive technique for quantitatively measuring pathologic changes in the brain.

BackgroundTemporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most prevalent refractory focal epilepsy and is more likely accompanied by cognitive impairment. The fully understanding of the neuronal activity underlying TLE is of great significance.ObjectiveThis study aimed to comprehensively explore the potential brain activity abnormalities affected by TLE and detect whether the changes were associated with cognition.MethodsSix static intrinsic brain activity (IBA) indicators [amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), degree centrality (DC), global signal correlation (GSCorr), and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC)] and their corresponding dynamic indicators, such as dynamic ALFF (dALFF), dynamic fALFF (dfALFF), dynamic ReHo (dReHo), dynamic DC (dDC), dynamic VMHC (dVMHC), and dynamic GSCorr (dGSCorr), in 57 patients with unilateral TLE and 42 healthy volunteers were compared. Correlation analyses were also performed between these indicators in areas displaying group differences and cognitive function, epilepsy duration, and severity.ResultsMarked overlap was present among the abnormal brain regions detected using various static and dynamic indicators, primarily including increased ALFF/dALFF/fALFF in the bilateral medial temporal lobe and thalamus, decreased ALFF/dALFF/fALFF in the frontal lobe contralateral to the epileptogenic side, decreased fALFF, ReHo, dReHo, DC, dDC, GSCorr, dGSCorr, and VMHC in the temporal neocortex ipsilateral to the epileptogenic foci, decreased dReHo, dDC, dGSCorr, and dVMHC in the occipital lobe, and increased ALFF, fALFF, dfALFF, ReHo, and DC in the supplementary motor area ipsilateral to the epileptogenic foci. Furthermore, most IBA indicators in the abnormal brain region significantly correlated with the duration of epilepsy and several cognitive scale scores (P < 0.05).ConclusionThe combined application of static and dynamic IBA indicators could comprehensively reveal more real abnormal neuronal activity and the impairment and compensatory mechanisms of cognitive function in TLE. Moreover, it might help in the lateralization of epileptogenic foci and exploration of the transmission and inhibition pathways of epileptic activity.

Abstract Purpose To compare integrated slice-specific dynamic shimming (iShim) diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and single-shot echo-planar imaging (SS-EPI) DWI in image quality and pathological characterization of rectal cancer. Materials and methods A total of 193 consecutive rectal tumor patients were enrolled for retrospective analysis. Among them, 101 patients underwent iShim-DWI (b = 0, 800, and 1600 s/mm2) and 92 patients underwent SS-EPI-DWI (b = 0, and 1000 s/mm2). Qualitative analyses of both DWI techniques was performed by two independent readers; including adequate fat suppression, the presence of artifacts and image quality. BackgroundWe aimed to investigate the feasibility and application of using the zoomed diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging (z-EPI DWI) sequences for hilar cholangiocarcinoma assessment compared with conventional single-shot EPI diffusion-weighted imaging (c-EPI DWI).MethodsBoth c-EPI DWI and z-EPI DWI were preoperatively performed in 16 patients with histopathologically-confirmed hilar cholangiocarcinoma. A two-dimensional spatial-selective radiofrequency (RF) pulse was applied to the z-EPI DWI using an echo-planar transmit trajectory. Anatomic structural visualization, lesion conspicuity, artifact presence and overall image quality were evaluated and compared between the two sequence images. Leisure agriculture can meet the leisure needs of residents and promote farmers’ income, which is an important way to achieve rural revitalization. However, the unreasonable spatial patterns and weak competitiveness of leisure agriculture seriously restrict its sustainable development. This paper proposes a framework for optimizing leisure agriculture development, including spatial patterns analysis of leisure agriculture based on big data, quality analysis of leisure agriculture based on tourists’ perceptions, and strategies for optimizing leisure agriculture based on spatial patterns and tourists’ perceptions. Taking Wuhan city as an example, the results show that: 1) the main types of leisure agriculture are leisure farms, fishing, and picking gardens, showing an agglomerative distribution pattern; 2) considering tourists’ emotional perceptions, most comments are positive, and leisure farms should enhance the tourist experience; 3) tourists’ dissatisfaction mainly involves the environment, price, and travel, while product and service factors are relatively satisfactory; and 4) moderate agglomeration is beneficial to the quality of leisure agriculture, while excessive agglomeration has adverse effects. This study explores the development law of regional leisure agriculture, improves the relevant theoretical research system and methods, and provides decision-making references for promoting the development of leisure agriculture.

Accompanied by China’s rapid economic growth, significant urban greening has occurred in Chinese cities, in particular in the urban core areas. In contrast, rapid urbanization and economic growth also led to a high probability of vegetation degradation in urban fringe regions. However, these significant spatial differences in urban greenness associated with economic growth in Chinese cities are not well understood. This study explored the spatiotemporal characteristics of the nighttime light (NTL) and annual maximum enhanced vegetation index (EVImax) in urban areas from 2001 to 2020. A strong decoupling status between economic growth and urban greenness on the national scale was found. Overall, 49.15% of urban areas showed a decoupling status. Spatially, this percentage of urban areas with a decoupling status would significantly decrease when the long-term average NTL surpasses 51. Moreover, this significant threshold of decoupling status was found in 189 cities out of 344 (54.65%) in China. This threshold in each city showed significant spatial heterogeneity but can mostly be attributed to the gradient in the long-term average precipitation (Pmean) of each city during the period of 2001–2020. Specifically, a spatial increase in Pmean of 100 mm responded to a decrease in the threshold of 0.4 DN (p < 0.01). In contrast, there was no significant correlation between the threshold and the economic growth status of each city. Our results provide valuable insights for coordinating the development of urban greening and economic growth.

PurposeTo determine whether intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) parameters correlate with liver regeneration and function recovery after partial hepatectomy (PH) in rats with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis.MethodsSixty-two adult Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the control group and the fibrosis group with CCl4 injection for 8 weeks. At the end of the 8th week, all rats received left lateral lobe liver resection. Within each group, IVIM imaging (n = 10/group) and histologic and biochemical analyses (n = 3/group/time point) were performed pre- and post-PH (on days 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 14, and 21). Differences in liver IVIM parameters and correlation between IVIM parameters and Ki-67 indices, hepatocyte diameter, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and total bilirubin (TBil) values were analyzed.ResultsPost-PH, liver true diffusion coefficient (D) values decreased and pseudodiffusion coefficient (D*) and perfusion fraction (PF) values increased, then recovered to pre-PH levels gradually in both fibrosis and control rats. PF in fibrosis group were significantly higher than in controls from 3 to 21 days (P < 0.05). In fibrosis rats, both Ki-67 indices and hepatocyte diameters increased, and a strong correlation was found between PF and Ki-67 indices (r = −0.756; P = 0.03), D* and PF values and ALT, AST, and TBil values (r = −0.762 to −0.905; P < 0.05). In control rats, only hepatocyte diameters increased, and all IVIM parameters correlated well with hepatocyte diameters, ALT, AST and TBil values (r = 0.810 to −1.000; P < 0.05).ConclusionThe regeneration pattern in fibrotic liver tissue was different compared with control livers. IVIM parameters can monitor liver regeneration and functional recovery non-invasively after PH.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the morphologic features and neurodevelopmental outcomes of individuals prenatally diagnosed with a periventricular pseudocyst (PVPC).Methods: Pregnant women with a fetus prenatally diagnosed with PVPC by MRI were enrolled in this retrospective study. The fetuses with PVPCs were divided into group 1 (isolated PVPC) and group 2 (PVPC with additional findings). The surviving infants underwent brain MRI examinations and the Gesell Developmental Scale (GDS) test after birth. Independent sample t-tests were used to compare the differences in the developmental quotient (DQ) between group 1 and group 2. We also analyzed the correlations among the DQ, location (unilateral/bilateral), size (diameter), and number (single/multiple) of the PVPCs in group 1 using Lasso regression.Results: In total, 131 infants (group 1: 78 infants, group 2: 53 infants) underwent MRI examinations after birth, and 97 infants (group 1: 59 infants, group 2: 38 infants) underwent the GDS test. Upon follow-up, the sizes of the cysts had become smaller or disappeared after birth. The average DQ in group 2 was lower than that in group 1 (all with p < 0.001). In group 1, the location (unilateral/bilateral), size (diameter), and number (single/multiple) of the PVPC did not affect the DQ.Conclusions: The PVPCs became smaller or disappeared after birth. Isolated PVPCs usually have a normal presentation after birth regardless of the location, number, or size. For PVPCs with additional findings, the neurodevelopmental outcomes were inferior to those in isolated PVPCs.

Background and Purpose: 3D pointwise encoding time reduction magnetic resonance angiography (PETRA-MRA) is a promising non-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) technique for intracranial stenosis assessment but it has not been adequately validated against digital subtraction angiography (DSA) relative to 3D-time-of-flight (3D-TOF) MRA. The aim of this study was to compare PETRA-MRA and 3D-TOF-MRA using DSA as the reference standard for intracranial stenosis assessment before and after angioplasty and stenting in patients with middle cerebral artery (MCA) stenosis.Materials and Methods: Sixty-two patients with MCA stenosis (age 53 ± 12 years, 43 males) underwent MRA and DSA within a week for pre-intervention evaluation and 32 of them had intracranial angioplasty and stenting performed. The MRAs' image quality, flow visualization within the stents, and susceptibility artifact were graded on a 1–4 scale (1 = poor, 4 = excellent) independently by three radiologists. The degree of stenosis was measured by two radiologists independently on DSA and MRAs.Results: There was an excellent inter-observer agreement for stenosis assessment on PETRA-MRA, 3D-TOF-MRA, and DSA (ICCs > 0.90). For pre-intervention evaluation, PETRA-MRA had better image quality than 3D-TOF-MRA (3.87 ± 0.34 vs. 3.38 ± 0.65, P < 0.001), and PETRA-MRA had better agreement with DSA for stenosis measurements compared to 3D-TOF-MRA (r = 0.96 vs. r = 0.85). For post-intervention evaluation, PETRA-MRA had better image quality than 3D-TOF-MRA for in-stent flow visualization and susceptibility artifacts (3.34 ± 0.60 vs. 1.50 ± 0.76, P < 0.001; 3.31 ± 0.64 vs. 1.41 ± 0.61, P < 0.001, respectively), and better agreement with DSA for stenosis measurements than 3D-TOF-MRA (r = 0.90 vs. r = 0.26). 3D-TOF-MRA significantly overestimated the stenosis post-stenting compared to DSA (84.9 ± 19.7 vs. 39.3 ± 13.6%, p < 0.001) while PETRA-MRA didn't (40.6 ± 13.7 vs. 39.3 ± 13.6%, p = 0.18).Conclusions: PETRA-MRA is accurate and reproducible for quantifying MCA stenosis both pre- and post-stenting compared with DSA and performs better than 3D-TOF-MRA.

Straw retention and wheat-soybean rotation play critical role in maintaining soil quality. However, the correlation between bacterial diversity and community structure, and soil nutrients is unknown, and a systematic understanding of their responses to straw retention is lacking. In the field experiment, the straw retention treatments included no straw (NS), half straw (HS), and total straw (TS) retention during long-term wheat-soybean rotation. The mean contents of soil total nitrogen (TN), nitrate-N (NO3−-N), and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) increased by 15.06%, 21.10%, and 38.23%, respectively, with straw retention relative to NS, while that of ammonium-N (NH4+-N) reduced by 3.68%. The concentration of carbon components increased as straw retention increased. The levels of soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and soil organic carbon (SOC) increased by 4.34%, 7.63%, and 9.34%, respectively, with straw retention relative to NS. Soil bacterial alpha diversity was reduced with straw retention. Soil pH and nutrient content were identified as the main factors affecting the soil microbial diversity and structure at the phylum level. Accordingly, straw retention and soybean-wheat rotation enable sustainable agriculture in the dryland of northern China.

Temperature and precipitation are the primary regulators of vegetation phenology in temperate zones. However, the relative contributions of each factor and their underlying combined effect on vegetation phenology are much less clear, especially for the grassland of the Tibetan Plateau To quantify the contribution of each factor and the potential interactions, we conducted redundancy analysis for grasslands spring phenology on the Tibetan Plateau during 2000–2017. Generally, the individual contribution of temperature and precipitation to grasslands spring phenology (the start of growing season (SOS)) was lower, despite a higher correlation coefficient, which further implied that these factors interact to affect the SOS. The contributions of temperature and precipitation to the grasslands spring phenology varied across space on the Tibetan Plateau, and these spatial heterogeneities can be mainly explained by the spatial gradient of long-term average precipitation during spring over 2000–2017. Specifically, the SOS for meadow was dominated by the mean temperature in spring (Tspring) in the eastern wetter ecoregion, with an individual contribution of 24.16% (p < 0.05), while it was strongly negatively correlated with the accumulated precipitation in spring (Pspring) in the western drier ecoregion. Spatially, a 10 mm increase in long-term average precipitation in spring resulted in an increase in the contribution of Tspring of 2.0% (p < 0.1) for meadow, while it caused a decrease in the contribution of Pspring of −0.3% (p < 0.05). Similarly, a higher contribution of Pspring for steppe was found in drier ecoregions. A spatial decrease in precipitation of 10 mm increased the contribution of Pspring of 1.4% (p < 0.05). Considering these impacts of precipitation on the relative contribution of warming and precipitation to the SOS, projected climate change would have a stronger impact on advancing SOS in a relatively moist environment compared to that of drier areas. Hence, these quantitative interactions and contributions must be included in current ecosystem models, mostly driven by indicators with the direct and the overall effect in response to projected climate warming.

Accurately quantifying the variation of urban green space is the prerequisite for fully understanding its ecosystem services. However, knowledge about the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban green space is still insufficient due to multiple challenges that remain in mapping green spaces within heterogeneous urban environments. This paper uses the city of Hangzhou to demonstrate an analysis methodology that integrates sub-pixel mapping technology and landscape analysis to fully investigate the spatiotemporal pattern and variation of hierarchical urban green space patches. Firstly, multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis was applied to time series Landsat data to derive green space coverage at the sub-pixel level. Landscape metric analysis was then employed to characterize the variation pattern of urban green space patches. Results indicate that Hangzhou has experienced a significant loss of urban greenness, producing a more fragmented and isolated vegetation landscape. Additionally, a remarkable amelioration of urban greenness occurred in the city core from 2002 to 2013, characterized by the significant increase of small-sized green space patches. The green space network has been formed as a consequence of new urban greening strategies in Hangzhou. These strategies have greatly fragmented the built-up areas and enriched the diversity of the urban landscape. Gradient analysis further revealed a distinct pattern of urban green space landscape variation in the process of urbanization. By integrating both sub-pixel mapping technology and landscape analysis, our approach revealed the subtle variation of urban green space patches which are otherwise easy to overlook. Findings from this study will help us to refine our understanding of the evolution of heterogeneous urban environments.
