In recent years, the emergence of novel biological threats has brought biosecurity issues to the forefront of societal concerns. The United Kingdom established the UK Biological Security Strategy in 2018, and after revisions, a new version was published in June 2023. The strategy presents the UK's new vision, mission, outcomes, and plans, and provides action plans from four perspectives: understanding, preventing, detecting, and responding to major biological threats to protect the UK's national interests and enhance biosecurity emergency preparedness and response capabilities. This article introduces the main contents and framework of the 2023 UK Biosecurity Strategy in detail, and reflects on its implications to provide a reference for the construction and development of China's biosecurity strategy.

Offshore wind farms are becoming increasingly distant from onshore centralized control centers, and the communication delays between them inevitably introduce time delays in the measurement signal of the primary frequency control. This causes a deterioration in the performance of the primary frequency control and, in some cases, may even result in frequency instability within the power system. Therefore, a frequency response model that incorporates communication delays was established for power systems that integrate offshore wind power. The Padé approximation was used to model the time delays, and a linearized frequency response model of the power system was derived to investigate the frequency stability under different time delays. The influences of the wind power proportion and frequency control parameters on the system frequency stability were explored. In addition, a Smith delay compensation control strategy was devised to mitigate the effects of communication delays on the system frequency dynamics. Finally, a power system incorporating offshore wind power was constructed using the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed delay compensation control strategy.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is experiencing rapid economic growth and rising demand for energy, accompanied by significant low energy access and sustainability challenges. Globally, to address similar issues and unlock a region's energy potential, regional integrated energy systems have gained traction, and initiatives such as establishing power pools for regional electricity markets, cross-border power exchanges, and integrating renewable energy resources are being promoted. This paper describes the status of regional integrated energy systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. We analyze the energy growth achieved through effective strategies and policies that support regional integrated energy systems in developed and developing regions (the United Kingdom and China). Our findings show that challenges, including limited access to financing, regulatory barriers, lack of effective energy planning model, inadequate supporting policies, and fragmented institutional frameworks, hinder the region's widespread deployment of regional integrated energy systems. Taking lessons from the case studies, addressing SSA's energy challenges requires concerted efforts from governments, international organizations, and the private sector to create enabling policy environments, mobilize investments, and build technical capacity and supporting infrastructures. Regional integrated energy systems can enhance energy security by diversifying energy sources, fostering economic development, and stimulating cross-border energy trade. In the United Kingdom, the implementation of integrated energy systems has contributed to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions and a 15% increase in energy efficiency over the past decade. Similarly, in China, the integration of renewable energy sources into regional energy systems has led to a 30% increase in renewable energy capacity and a 20% decrease in coal consumption since 2010. China owns 32% of global renewable energy market, alongside an installed capacity of about 1.26 TW in the first quarter of 2023. Our findings from the power pools indicate that three out of the four pools possess significant hydro energy resources. Specifically, within the CAPP region, 7 out of 10 countries heavily rely on hydro energy, while in EAPP, 6 out of 11 countries exhibit a similar dependency. Moreover, within SAPP, 9 out of 12 countries and within WAPP, 5 out of 14 countries rely significantly on hydro energy.

Background: The re-emergence of scrub typhus in the southern provinces of China in recent decades has been validated, thereby attracting the attention of public health authorities. There has been a spatial and temporal expansion of scrub typhus in Hainan Province, but the epidemiological characteristics, environmental drivers, and potential high-risk areas for scrub typhus have not yet been investigated. Objective: The aims of this study were to characterize the spatiotemporal epidemiology of scrub typhus, identify dominant environmental risk factors, and map potential risk areas in Hainan Province from 2011 to 2020. Methods: The spatiotemporal dynamics of scrub typhus in Hainan Province between 2011 and 2020 were analyzed using spatial analyses and seasonal-trend decomposition using regression (STR). The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model was applied to determine the key environmental predictors and environmentally suitable areas for scrub typhus, and the demographic diversity of the predicted suitable zones was evaluated. Results: During 2011–2020, 3260 scrub typhus cases were recorded in Hainan Province. The number of scrub typhus cases increased continuously each year, particularly among farmers (67.61%) and individuals aged 50–59 years (23.25%) who were identified as high-risk groups. A dual epidemic peak was detected, emerging annually from April to June and from July to October. The MaxEnt-based risk map illustrated that highly suitable areas, accounting for 25.36% of the total area, were mainly distributed in the northeastern part of Hainan Province, where 75.43% of the total population lived. Jackknife tests revealed that ground surface temperature, elevation, cumulative precipitation, evaporation, land cover, population density, and ratio of dependents were the most significant environmental factors. Conclusion: In this study, we gained insights into the spatiotemporal epidemiological dynamics, pivotal environmental drivers, and potential risk map of scrub typhus in Hainan Province. These results have important implications for researchers and public health officials in guiding future prevention and control strategies for scrub typhus.

Time series models have been used to extract damage features in the measured structural response. In order to better extract the sensitive features in the signal and detect structural damage, this paper proposes a damage identification method that combines empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models. EMD decomposes nonlinear and non-stationary signals into different intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) according to frequency. IMF reduces the complexity of the signal and makes it easier to extract damage-sensitive features (DSF). The ARIMA model is used to extract damage sensitive features in IMF signals. The damage sensitive characteristic value of each node is used to analyze the location and damage degree of the damaged structure of the bridge. Considering that there are usually multiple failures in the actual engineering structure, this paper focuses on analysing the location and damage degree of multi-damaged bridge structures. A 6-meter-long multi-destructive steel-whole vibration experiment proved the state of the method. Meanwhile, the other two damage identification methods are compared. The results demonstrate that the DSF can effectively identify the damage location of the structure, and the accuracy rate has increased by 22.98% and 18.4% on average respectively.

Abstract Background Skin ageing caused by long-term ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is a complex biological process that involves multiple signalling pathways. Stem cell-conditioned media is believed to have anti-ageing effects on the skin. The purpose of this study was to explore the biological effects of UVB irradiation and anti-photoaging effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned medium (hUC-MSC-CM) on HaCaT cells using multi-omics analysis with a novel cellular photoaging model. Methods A cellular model of photoaging was constructed by irradiating serum-starved HaCaT cells with 20 mJ/cm2 UVB. Transcriptomics and proteomics analyses were used to explore the biological effects of UVB irradiation on photoaged HaCaT cells. Changes in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration, the cell cycle, and expression of senescence genes and proteins were measured to assess the protective effects of hUC-MSC-CM in the cellular photoaging model. Results The results of the multi-omics analysis revealed that UVB irradiation affected various biological functions of cells, including cell proliferation and the cell cycle, and induced a senescence-associated secretory phenotype. hUC-MSC-CM treatment reduced cell apoptosis, inhibited G1 phase arrest in the cell cycle, reduced the production of reactive oxygen species, and promoted cell motility. The qRT-PCR results indicated that MYC, IL-8, FGF-1, and EREG were key genes involved in the anti-photoaging effects of hUC-MSC-CM. The western blotting results demonstrated that C-FOS, C-JUN, TGFβ, p53, FGF-1, and cyclin A2 were key proteins involved in the anti-photoaging effects of hUC-MSC-CM. Conclusion Serum-starved HaCaT cells irradiated with 20 mJ/cm2 UVB were used to generate an innovative cellular photoaging model, and hUC-MSC-CM demonstrates potential as an anti-photoaging treatment for skin.

BackgroundHemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a significant zoonotic disease mainly transmitted by rodents. However, the determinants of its spatiotemporal patterns in Northeast China remain unclear. ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics and epidemiological characteristics of HFRS and detect the meteorological effect of the HFRS epidemic in Northeastern China. MethodsThe HFRS cases of Northeastern China were collected from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and meteorological data were collected from the National Basic Geographic Information Center. Times series analyses, wavelet analysis, Geodetector model, and SARIMA model were performed to identify the epidemiological characteristics, periodical fluctuation, and meteorological effect of HFRS in Northeastern China. ResultsA total of 52,655 HFRS cases were reported in Northeastern China from 2006 to 2020, and most patients with HFRS (n=36,558, 69.43%) were aged between 30-59 years. HFRS occurred most frequently in June and November and had a significant 4- to 6-month periodicity. The explanatory power of the meteorological factors to HFRS varies from 0.15 ≤ q ≤ 0.01. In Heilongjiang province, mean temperature with a 4-month lag, mean ground temperature with a 4-month lag, and mean pressure with a 5-month lag had the most explanatory power on HFRS. In Liaoning province, mean temperature with a 1-month lag, mean ground temperature with a 1-month lag, and mean wind speed with a 4-month lag were found to have an effect on HFRS, but in Jilin province, the most important meteorological factors for HFRS were precipitation with a 6-month lag and maximum evaporation with a 5-month lag. The interaction analysis of meteorological factors mostly showed nonlinear enhancement. The SARIMA model predicted that 8,343 cases of HFRS are expected to occur in Northeastern China. ConclusionsHFRS showed significant inequality in epidemic and meteorological effects in Northeastern China, and eastern prefecture-level cities presented a high risk of epidemic. This study quantifies the hysteresis effects of different meteorological factors and prompts us to focus on the influence of ground temperature and precipitation on HFRS transmission in future studies, which could assist local health authorities in developing HFRS-climate surveillance, prevention, and control strategies targeting high-risk populations in China.

Background: Two common techniques used in canteen hygiene supervision, are the coliform paper assay, which is the standard method, and the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence method. The coliform paper assay requires the incubation of the sample, which is time-consuming and does not provide a real-time assessment. Meanwhile, the ATP bioluminescence assay can provide real-time kitchenware cleanliness data. Objective: This study aimed to compare these two methods for evaluating the sanitary condition of kitchenware and explore whether the ATP bioluminescence assay can be used as a standard method in sanitary inspection. Methods: In this study, the cluster random sampling method was used to sample kitchenware from six canteens in the Hebei province, China. Samples were, assessed through the coliform paper test and ATP bioluminescence assay. Results: Kitchenware negative rates for the coliform paper method and the ATP test were 64.39% and 49.07%, respectively. The Escherichia coli positive detection rate grew steadily as the relative light units (RLU) value for the ATP technique increased. The kappa coefficient for the two methods was 0.549, indicating that the two methods yield relatively consistent results. Conclusion: Although currently not considered a standard method, simply using ATP detection is advantageous for quick on-site detection in catering unit hygiene supervision.

ABSTRACT Mosquitoes and biting Culicoides species are arbovirus vectors. Effective virome profile surveillance is essential for the prevention and control of insect-borne diseases. From June to September 2021, we collected eight species of female mosquito and Culicoides on Zhoushan Island, China, and used meta-viromic sequencing to analyze their virome compositions and characteristics. The classified virus reads were distributed in 191 genera in 66 families. The virus sequences in mosquitoes with the largest proportions were Iflaviridae (30.03%), Phasmaviridae (23.09%), Xinmoviridae (21.82%), Flaviviridae (13.44%), and Rhabdoviridae (8.40%). Single-strand RNA+ viruses formed the largest proportions of viruses in all samples. Blood meals indicated that blood-sucking mosquito hosts were mainly chicken, duck, pig, and human, broadly consistent with the habitats where the mosquitoes were collected. Novel viruses of the Orthobunyavirus, Narnavirus, and Iflavirus genera were found in Culicoides by de-novo assembly. The viruses with vertebrate hosts carried by mosquitoes and Culicoides also varied widely. The analysis of unclassified viruses and deep-learning analysis of the “dark matter” in the meta-viromic sequencing data revealed the presence of a large number of unknown viruses. IMPORTANCE The monitoring of the viromes of mosquitoes and Culicoides, widely distributed arbovirus transmission vectors, is crucial to evaluate the risk of infectious disease transmission. In this study, the compositions of the viromes of mosquitoes and Culicoides on Zhoushan Island varied widely and were related mainly to the host species, with different host species having different core viromes. and many unknown sequences in the Culicoides viromes remain to be annotated, suggesting the presence of a large number of unknown viruses.

Klebsiella michiganensis is an increasingly important bacterial pathogen causing nosocomial infections in clinical patients. In this study, we described the molecular and genomic characteristics of a carbapenem-resistant K. michiganensis strain KM166 cultured from a one-month premature baby’s blood sample. KM166 showed lower biofilm forming ability in optical density (OD) than K. pneumoniae NTUH-K2044 (0.271 ± 0.027 vs. 0.595 ± 0.054, p = 0.001), and the median lethal dose (0.684 lg CFU/mL) was lower than K. pneumoniae strain NTUH-K2044 (6.679 lg CFU/mL). A IncFII/IncFIA(HI1)/IncFIB(K) multiple replicon plasmid in KM166 was identified carrying three replicon types. It has low homology to Escherichia coli pMRY09-581ECO_1 and the highest homology similarity to the INcFIA/INcFII(p14)-type plasmid in K. michiganensis strain fxq plasmid pB_KPC, suggesting that this multiple replicon plasmid was unlikely to have been transmitted from E. coli and probably a transfer of repFIB replicon genes from other K. michiganensis strains into the INcFIA/INcFII(p14)-type plasmid of KM166 had occurred. Mapping of the gene environment revealed that blaKPC-2 in KM166 plasmid 3 had high identity and same Tn3-tnpR-IS481-blaKPC-2-klcA_1 genomic context structure with K. pneumoniae strain JKP55, plasmid pKPC-J5501, and blaKPC-2-carrying plasmid proved to be autonomously transferred under the help of mobile genetic elements into Escherichia coli 600 by plasmid conjugation experiment. In conclusion, we have characterized a K. michiganensis strain carrying multi-replicon IncFII/IncFIA(HI1)/IncFIB(K) plasmid and blaKPC-2-carrying IncFII(p14)/IncFIA plasmid in this study, which provided insights about the evolutionary diversity of plasmids carried by K. michiganensis.

IntroductionHypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae (HmKp) poses an emerging and highly pathogenic global health threat. This study aimed to investigate the clinical and genomic characteristics of HmKp isolates to better understand the virulence mechanisms of the hypermucoviscous (HMV) phenotype.MethodsFrom May 2018 to August 2021, 203 non-repeat K. pneumoniae isolates causing invasive infections were collected from a hospital in Beijing, China. Isolates were divided into HmKp (n=90, 44.3%) and non-HmKp (n=113, 55.7%) groups according to string test results.ResultsMultivariate regression showed that diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [OR]=2.20, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20-4.05, p=0.010) and liver abscess (OR=2.93, CI 95%:1.29-7.03, p=0.012) were associated with HmKp infections. K. pneumoniae was highly diverse, comprising 87 sequence types (STs) and 54 serotypes. Among HmKp isolates, ST23 was the most frequent ST (25/90, 27.8%), and the most prevalent serotypes were KL2 (31/90, 34.4%) and KL1 (27/90, 30.0%). Thirteen virulence genes were located on the capsular polysaccharide synthesis region of KL1 strains. ObjectiveCognitive impairment (CI) has been demonstrated as a useful proxy measure of mortality in Western populations. However, the predictive value of CI in Chinese populations is unknown. We aimed to explore whether CI is independently associated with increased long-term all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in Chinese older adults and the association of performance in specific MMSE sub-domains to subsequent mortality.Methods and resultsA total of 4,499 older adults [mean (SD) age, 70.3(6.7) years] who received a sample investigation from 2011 to 2014 were followed up till 2021 for mortality. The Mini-Mental State Examination was used to assess cognitive function, and Cox's proportional hazard models were used to evaluate the effects of cognitive function on the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality. Demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and health status were included as covariates. During a 10-year follow-up, a total of 667 (14.8%) died. In the fully adjusted model, compared with cognitively normal participants with CI had a 1.33-fold [HR, 1.33; (95% CI, 1.10–1.61)] greater risk of all-cause mortality and a 1.45-fold [HR, 1.45; (95% CIs, 1.11–1.92)] greater risk of CVD mortality. After a similar multivariable adjustment, a per-SD increase in MMSE scores was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality [HR, 0.85; (95% CI, 0.78–0.93)] and CVD mortality [HR, 0.74; (95% CI, 0.65–0.84)]. In the unadjusted model, MMSE sub-domains (apart from immediate recall) were associated with mortality. But only orientation and calculation and attention were still independently associated with all-cause and CVD mortality in a multivariable model.ConclusionThese findings confirmed that CI is a marker of all-cause and CVD mortality risk in Chinese older adults, independently of other commonly assessed risk factors, and some sub-domains of the MMSE may have stronger associations with mortality. Further research is needed to identify the mechanisms underlying the observed associations.

BackgroundDiabetes mellitus (DM) or cognitive impairment (CI) is known to be strongly associated with mortality. DM commonly coexists with CI and proportionally increases with age. However, little is known about the combined effect of cognitive function and diabetes on mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of DM and CI on all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Chinese older adults.MethodsThis prospective population-based cohort study was based on the Beijing Elderly Comprehensive Health Cohort Study. A total of 4,499 older adults were included. Cox’s proportional hazard models were utilized to calculate the effect of DM and CI on all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and cancer mortality, and a multiplicative term was introduced to study a potential interaction between DM and CI on outcomes.ResultsDuring a median follow-up of 6.8 years (ranging from 6.6 to 11.7 years), 667 (14.8%) participants died from all causes, 292 from CVD, and 215 from cancer. In the fully adjusted model, participants with coexisting DM and CI had the highest risk of all-cause mortality [hazard ratios (HRs), 3.08; 95% confidence intervals (CIs), 2.30,4.11] and CVD mortality (HRs, 3.85; 95% CIs, 2.60,5.71) compared with individuals with normal cognition and non-DM. We also found a multiplicative interaction between DM and CI in respect to all-cause (HRs, 2.46; 95% CI, 1.87,3.22) and CVD mortality (HRs, 3.15 95% CI, 2.19,4.55). In the diabetic population, CI was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HRs, 2.09; 95% CIs, 1.51,2.89) and CVD mortality (HRs, 3.16; 95% CIs, 2.02,5.05) compared with the normal cognition group. Restricted cubic spline revealed a linear inverse association between Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score and all-cause, CVD mortality in the total sample and participants without diabetes. However, a nearly reverse J association was observed between MMSE and mortality from all causes and CVD in the diabetes group.ConclusionThe findings highlighted that cognitive impairment concomitant with diabetes further increases the risk of mortality. In addition to strengthening routine screening of cognitive functioning in older adults with early-stage diabetes, more extensive assessment of prognostic risks has high clinical value for developing comprehensive treatment plans.

Abstract Background Chikungunya fever, caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), has become a major global health concern, causing unexpected large outbreaks in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. CHIKV is not indigenous to China, and its origin in the country is poorly understood. In particular, there is limited understanding of the recent global spread of CHIKV in the context of the CHIKV epidemic. Methods Here we investigated a novel Chikungunya patient who came from Myanmar to China in August, 2019. Direct genome sequencing was performed via combined MinION sequencing and BGISEQ-500 sequencing. A complete CHIKV genome dataset, including 727 CHIKV genomes retrieved from GenBank and the genome sequenced in this study, was constructed. An updated and comprehensive phylogenetic analysis was conducted to understand the virus’s origin, evolution, transmission routes and genetic adaptation. Results All globally distributed CHIKV genomes were divided into West Africa, East/Central/South African and Asian genotypes. The genome sequenced in this study was located in the Indian Ocean lineage, and was closely related to a strain isolated from an Australian patient who returned from Bangladesh in 2017. A comprehensive phylogenetic analysis showed that the Chinese strains mainly originated from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Further analyses indicated that the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia may act as major hubs for the recent global spread of CHIKV, leading to multiple outbreaks and epidemics. Moreover, we identified 179 distinct sites, including some undescribed sites in the structural and non-structural proteins, which exhibited apparent genetic variations associated with different CHIKV lineages. Conclusions Here we report a novel CHIKV isolate from a chikungunya patient who came from Myanmar to China in 2019, and summarize the source and evolution of Chinese CHIKV strains. Our present findings provide a better understanding of the recent global evolution of CHIKV, highlighting the urgent need for strengthened surveillance against viral diversity.

Abstract The popularisation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the security threats that follow have made the detection of low‐slow‐small (LSS) targets a hotspot in the radar field. For ground‐based surveillance radars (GSR), the folded‐clutter is an important factor affecting LSS target detection performance. Herein, the stepped‐frequency (SF) signal is used to improve the performance of the folded‐clutter suppression and the LSS target detection for the GSR. Furthermore, an optimisation method for the SF signal parameter design is proposed to maximise the folded‐clutter improvement factor. Specifically, signal parameters including the frequency step number and the step sequence are optimised based on the clutter cognition results. To verify the effectiveness of the well‐designed SF signals in the LSS target detection, simulation experiments and field tests using an L‐band SF‐GSR and a DJI M600‐Pro UAV are conducted. Compared to the results achieved by a simple chirp signal, the detection probabilities of the LSS target with different velocities are significantly increased when the SF signals are used in a typical strong folded‐clutter background.

ABSTRACT Bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is a serious and urgent threat for hospitalized patients. This study aims to describe the clinical and molecular characteristics of CRKP causing BSI in a tertiary-care hospital in Beijing, China. A total of 146 CRKP strains and 39 carbapenem-susceptible K. pneumoniae (CSKP) strains collected in the hospital from 2017 to 2020 were sent for whole-genome sequencing. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to evaluate risk factors for in-hospital mortality of CRKP-BSI cases. Thirty (20.5%) of 146 CRKP-BSI patients and three (7.7%) of 39 CSKP-BSI patients died at discharge (χ2 = 3.471, P = 0.062). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that age and use of urinary catheters were independent risk factors for the death of CRKP-BSI. The 146 CRKP isolates belonged to 9 sequence types (STs) and 11 serotypes, while the 39 CSKP isolates belonged to 23 STs and 27 serotypes. The mechanism of carbapenem resistance for all the CRKP strains was the acquisition of carbapenemase, mainly KPC-2 (n = 127). There were 2 predominant serotypes for ST11 CRKP, namely, KL47 (n = 82) and KL64 (n = 42). Some virulent genes, including rmpA2, iucABCD and iutA, and repB gene, which was involved in plasmid replication, were detected in all ST11-KL64 strains. Evolutionary transmission analysis suggested that ST11 CRKP strains might have evolved from KL47 into KL64 and were accompanied by multiple outbreak events. This study poses an urgent need for enhancing infection control measures in the hospital, especially in the intensive care unit where the patients are at high-risk for acquiring CRKP-BSI. IMPORTANCE CRKP-BSI is demonstrated to cause high mortality. In this study, we demonstrated that ST11 CRKP strains might carry many virulent genes. Meanwhile, outbreak events occurred several times in the strains collected. Carbapenemase acquisition (mainly KPC-2 carbapenemase) was responsible for carbapenem resistance of all the 146 CRKP strains. As 2 predominant strains, all ST11-KL64 strains, but not ST11-KL47 strains, carried rmpA2, iucABCD, iutA, as well as a plasmid replication initiator (repB). Our study suggested that the occurrence of region-specific recombination events manifested by the acquisition of some virulence genes might contribute to serotype switching from ST11-KL47 to ST11-KL64. The accumulation of virulent genes in epidemic resistant strains poses a great challenge for the prevention and treatment of BSI caused by K. pneumoniae in high-risk patients.

The detection of low, slow and small (LSS) targets, such as small drones, is a developing area of research in radar, wherein the presence of ground clutter can be quite challenging. LSS targets, because of their unusual flying mode, can be easily shadowed by ground clutter, leading to poor radar detection performance. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and performance of a ground clutter mitigation method combining slow-time multiple-input multiple-output (st-MIMO) waveforms and independent component analysis (ICA) in a ground-based MIMO radar focusing on LSS target detection. The modeling of ground clutter under the framework of st-MIMO was first defined. Combining the spatial and temporal steering vector of st-MIMO, a universal signal model including the target, ground clutter, and noise was established. The compliance of the signal model for conducting ICA to separate the target was analyzed. Based on this, a st-MIMO-ICA processing scheme was proposed to mitigate ground clutter. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified with simulation and experimental data collected from an S-band st-MIMO radar system with a desirable target output signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratio (SCNR). This work can shed light on the use of ground clutter mitigation techniques for MIMO radar to tackle LSS targets.

In this paper, an online model-free method is proposed to estimate the dynamic model of a power system with distributed renewable energy sources (RES). The proposed method, requiring no knowledge of network topology and model parameters, is computationally efficient and can be implemented online. The impact of missing PMUs is evaluated in detail, which shows that most entries of the dynamic model can still be well estimated in the case of missing PMUs. Simulation studies in the modified IEEE 68-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method can provide accurate estimation of the dynamic model in different operating conditions. The method can help detect topology change even when some PMUs are lost.

In this paper, a new method using wind turbulence excitation is proposed to estimate the parameters of the mechanical system (drivetrain and pitch angle controller) in a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) Wind Turbine (WT). Firstly, simulations were carried out for a DFIG WT under turbulence excitations. The spectral contents of the responses imply that the transients of the electrical system (generator and converter), which are much faster than those of the mechanical system, can be neglected when estimating the mechanical parameters. Based on this, a simplified model related to the mechanical system of the DFIG WT was derived by applying the model reduction technique. Secondly, the parameter sensitivity of Power Spectral Density (PSD) was used to quantify the impacts of individual parameters on the dynamics of the mechanical system, and the influential parameters were selected on the basis of the sensitivity results. Finally, a weighted least-squares optimization problem, which is suitable for a system with close oscillation modes, was formulated for parameter estimation. The estimation results based on two different types of optimization methods were compared, and their estimation accuracies validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The risk of cascading blackouts (RCB) is of great significance in practice because cascading outages can have catastrophic consequences. As there is a positive relationship between the probability of cascading blackouts and that of component failures, an effective way to mitigate the RCB is to perform maintenance. However, this approach is of limited value when considering extremely complicated cascading outages, such as those in particularly large systems. In this paper, we propose a methodology to efficiently identify the most influential component(s) for mitigating the RCB in a large-power system based on inference from the simulation data. First, we establish a data-based analytic relationship between the adopted maintenance strategies and the estimated RCB. Then, we formulate the component maintenance decisionmaking problem as a nonlinear 0-1 programming problem. We then quantify the credibility of the estimated RCB and develop an adaptive method to determine the minimum required number of simulations, which is a crucial parameter in the optimization model. Finally, we devise two heuristic algorithms to efficiently identify approximately optimal solutions. The proposed method is then validated by way of numerical experiments based on IEEE standard systems and an actual provincial system.

In this paper, the effect of non-ferromagnetic metal shielding (NFMS) material on the resonator of wireless power transfer (WPT) is studied by modeling, simulation and experimental analysis. And, the effect of NFMS material on the power transfer efficiency (PTE) of WPT systems is investigated by circuit model. Meanwhile, the effect of ferromagnetic metal shielding material on the PTE of WPT systems is analyzed through simulation. A double layer metal shield structure is designed. Experimental results demonstrate that by applying the novel double layer metal shielding method, the system PTE increases significantly while the electromagnetic field of WPT systems declines dramatically.

Thermal stress of the rotor in a squirrel cage induction motor is generated due to the temperature rise, it is also one of the factors causing the broken bar fault because the structure of the rotor would be destroyed if the stress of the rotor bars exceed the strength limit. The coupled fluid-thermal analysis for the induction motor with healthy and broken bar rotors is performed in this paper. Much concern has been committed to establishment of the fluid model on the basis of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) theory. The heat field of the prototypes is analysed so that the effect of the asymmetrical rotor on the motor heat performance can be investigated in depth. Eventually, the efficiency of the presented model and method, for the totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) induction motor, can be verified through experimental results. In addition, this paper reports a quantitative analysis of the heat flux distribution of the fault rotor, and the heat flux density of the bars is investigated in detail. Then, the part most likely to break in the rotor as a result of the thermal load is identified.

An opportunity wireless charging system for electric vehicles when they stop and wait at traffic lights is proposed in this paper. In order to solve the serious power fluctuation caused by random access loads, this study presents a power stabilization strategy based on counting the number of electric vehicles in a designated area, including counting method, power source voltage adjustment strategy and choice of counting points. Firstly, the circuit model of a wireless power system with multi-loads is built and the equation of each load is obtained. Secondly, after the counting method of electric vehicles is stated, the voltage adjustment strategy, based on the number of electric vehicles when the system is at a steady state, is set out. Then, the counting points are chosen according to power curves when the voltage adjustment strategy is adopted. Finally, an experimental prototype is implemented to verify the power stabilization strategy. The experimental results show that, with the application of this strategy, the charging power is stabilized with the fluctuation of no more than 5% when loads access randomly.

On-road charging systems for electric vehicles (EVs) have shown revolutionary potential in extending driving range and reducing battery capacities. The optimal equivalent load resistances to maximize receiving power of each EV according to different EV amounts are investigated. This paper introduces a typical on-road charging system with a single transmitting coil and multiple receiving coils. The equivalent circuit models according to different numbers of EVs are built. Power control strategies with regard to a varying number of EVs are then presented. Specifically, self-adaptive source voltage based on primary current detection is utilized to charge EVs, while the source can support enough EVs by providing the rated power. Otherwise, the source voltage is regulated to its maximum value and the charging energy of each EV is suggested to be controlled by adjusting the individual driving speed. A remarkable feature of the power control strategies is that the charging power for each EV is stable and can compensate for energy losses efficiently. As for urgent power demand from a particular EV with a low battery capacity, the adjustment of the corresponding load resistance is applied to alter the power distribution. The proposed technique has been verified in an experimental prototype.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is greatly affected when the transmission channel is surrounded by non-ferromagnetic metallic objects and the alternating magnetic field interacts with the metal conductor, which is more of an issue in wirelessly charged electric vehicle (EV) applications. This paper analyses the performances of a WPT system in an environment with a non-ferromagnetic metal plate. The impedance model of the WPT system in the metal environment is established. Moreover the variation law of a coil’s equivalent inductance and resistance is deduced when the coil is surrounded by the non-ferromagnetic metal plate. Meanwhile, simulations, theory and experiments all confirm that the model is correct. Finally, since the system performance of a wireless charging system is influenced by non-ferromagnetic metals, this paper puts forward a method to improve the performance, that is, to place ferrite cores between the receiving coil and a metal plate. Experiments are carried out to verify the method, and the desired results are achieved.

Overhead high voltage power line (HVPL) online monitoring equipment is playing an increasingly important role in smart grids, but the power supply is an obstacle to such systems’ stable and safe operation, so in this work a hybrid wireless power supply system, integrated with inductive energy harvesting and wireless power transmitting, is proposed. The energy harvesting device extracts energy from the HVPL and transfers that from the power line to monitoring equipment on transmission towers by transmitting and receiving coils, which are in a magnetically coupled resonant configuration. In this paper, the optimization design of online energy harvesting devices is analyzed emphatically by taking both HVPL insulation distance and wireless power supply efficiency into account. It is found that essential parameters contributing to more extracted energy include large core inner radius, core radial thickness, core height and small core gap within the threshold constraints. In addition, there is an optimal secondary coil turn that can maximize extracted energy when other parameters remain fixed. A simple and flexible control strategy is then introduced to limit power fluctuations caused by current variations. The optimization methods are finally verified experimentally.
