Abstract Converting solar energy into fuels is pursued as an attractive route to reduce dependence on fossil fuel. In this context, photothermal catalysis is a very promising approach through converting photons into heat to drive catalytic reactions. There are mainly three key factors that govern the photothermal catalysis performance: maximized solar absorption, minimized thermal emission and excellent catalytic property of catalyst. However, the previous research has focused on improving solar absorption and catalytic performance of catalyst, largely neglected the optimization of thermal emission. Here, we demonstrate an optically selective catalyst based Ti3C2Tx Janus design, that enables minimized thermal emission, maximized solar absorption and good catalytic activity simultaneously, thereby achieving excellent photothermal catalytic performance. When applied to Sabatier reaction and reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) as demonstrations, we obtain an approximately 300% increase in catalytic yield through reducing the thermal emission of catalyst by ~70% under the same irradiation intensity. It is worth noting that the CO2 methanation yield reaches 3317.2 mmol gRu −1 h−1 at light power of 2 W cm−2, setting a performance record among catalysts without active supports. We expect that this design opens up a new pathway for the development of high-performance photothermal catalysts.

Abstract Body weight is related to both diabetes and cognitive impairment; however, the associations between body mass index (BMI) and cognitive impairment have been reported less frequently among diabetes patients. A total of 1355 patients with type 2 diabetes aged ≥ 60 years were included in this study. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was administered to assess participants’ cognitive status. We collected self-reported body weight, weight loss and appetite loss data using questionnaires. Associations between body weight status (in childhood, midlife age, and late life), weight loss, appetite changes and cognitive impairment were explored using logistic regression. Among the participants, 41.7% exhibited cognitive impairment. Overweight in childhood and late life was associated with cognitive impairment among diabetes patients (OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.52–4.55; OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.03–1.69). Diabetes patients with cognitive impairment were more likely to report a body weight decline and appetite reduction in the past three months (OR 4.18, 95% CI 2.61–6.71; OR 4.41, 95% CI 2.67–7.29). Higher BMI, weight loss, and appetite reduction were positively correlated with cognitive impairment. Given the risk of cognitive impairment, we suggest that body weight and BMI decline should be monitored in patients with diabetes.

High-temperature (HT) stress can induce male sterility in wheat; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined proteomic alterations across three developmental stages between normal and HT-induced male-sterile (HT-ms) anthers in wheat. Utilizing tandem mass tags-based proteomics, we identified 2532 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs): 27 in the tetrad stage, 157 in the binuclear stage, and 2348 in the trinuclear stage. Analyses through Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways indicated significant enrichment of these DAPs in seven pathways, namely phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, flavonoid biosynthesis, sphingolipid metabolism, MAPK signaling pathway, starch and sucrose metabolism, response to heat, and response to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our results indicated the downregulation of DAPs associated with phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and starch and sucrose metabolism, which aligns with anther indehiscence and the lack of starch in HT-ms anthers. By contrast, DAPs in the ROS pathway were upregulated, which aligns with excessive ROS accumulation in HT-ms anthers. Additionally, we conducted protein–protein interaction analysis for the DAPs of these pathways, identifying 15 hub DAPs. The abundance of these hub proteins was confirmed through qRT-PCR, assessing mRNA expression levels of the corresponding transcripts. Collectively, these results offer insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying HT-induced male sterility in wheat at the proteomic level, providing a valuable resource for further research in plant sexual reproduction.

The AMB-rotor system is complex and has strong coupling characteristics, which allows multi-harmonic disturbances to enter the system through different ways to produce vibrations with rich spectrum components, which has a great influence on the improvement of micro-vibration accuracy of the rotor system. To further achieve active control of the micro-vibration in the AMB-rotor system, firstly, the mechanism of multi-source disturbance is analyzed according to the working principle of the AMB-rotor system, and the mathematical and physical relationship between the mechanism of disturbance generation and the inducement is deeply studied. Then, the structure of a novel adaptive notch filter, the method of adaptive frequency estimation and analysis of harmonic current suppression in the AMB system are presented. Finally, simulation and experimental research using an MSCMG system demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method regarding the elimination of harmonic control current.

Abstract Radiative cooling is a zero-energy technology that enables subambient cooling by emitting heat into outer space (~3 K) through the atmospheric transparent windows. However, existing designs typically focus only on the main atmospheric transparent window (8–13 μm) and ignore another window (16–25 μm), under-exploiting their cooling potential. Here, we show a dual-selective radiative cooling design based on a scalable thermal emitter, which exhibits selective emission in both atmospheric transparent windows and reflection in the remaining mid-infrared and solar wavebands. As a result, the dual-selective thermal emitter exhibits an ultrahigh subambient cooling capacity (~9 °C) under strong sunlight, surpassing existing typical thermal emitters (≥3 °C cooler) and commercial counterparts (as building materials). Furthermore, the dual-selective sample also exhibits high weather resistance and color compatibility, indicating a high practicality. This work provides a scalable and practical radiative cooling design for sustainable thermal management.

Abstract The development of fifth‐generation technology has resulted in increased demand for materials with low dielectric losses and superior thermal and mechanical properties. However, ensuring the widespread use of such materials by investigating their aging mechanisms and operating lifetimes remains challenging. In this study, a glass‐fiber (GF)‐reinforced acrylate‐styrene‐acrylonitrile/polycarbonate (ASA/GF/PC) composite is designed and comprehensively investigated its aging behavior, mechanism, and service lifetime under long‐term hygrothermal conditions. Based on the general Peck model, the composite maintains a high level of quality for over 10 years, including under harsh conditions of 40 °C and 80% relative humidity. The aging mechanism is primarily ascribed to cracking between the GF fibers and matrix, the breaking of chemical bonds, the generation of new cross‐linked domains, and physical aging. These findings provide valuable insights into the long‐term utilization of ASA/GF/PC composites in harsh environments.

Abstract To investigate the potential mechanism of resveratrol in anti-fatigue by network pharmacology and molecular docking, and to investigate the anti-fatigue efficacy of resveratrol through in vitro animal experiments. Resveratrol action targets and fatigue-related targets were obtained using various databases. The anti-fatigue targets of resveratrol were obtained using the Venn diagram, uploaded to the String database, imported into Cytoscape 3.7.1, and constructed into a Protein-protein interaction network. The target genes were then subjected to Gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of gene and genome enrichment analysis. Molecular docking verification was performed on the binding ability of the core target to resveratrol. Using swimming-trained mice as exercise models, exhaustive swimming time and fatigue-related biochemical parameters were used as indicators to investigate the effects of resveratrol on exercise endurance and energy metabolism. 104 anti-fatigue targets and 10 core target genes of resveratrol were obtained. KEGG analysis enrichment included AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications, Human cytomegalovirus infection, and Pathways in cancer. Molecular docking showed that the core target genes TP53, PIK3R1, AKT1, PIK3CA, and MAPK1 had good binding activity to resveratrol. Background and Aims: Glucocorticoids are commonly utilised as adjuvants to enhance nerve block quality and prolong the analgesic duration. Its systemic effects, after a single-injection adductor canal block (ACB) followed by a continuous infusion, are unclear. The aim of the study was to assess the systemic effects of a single dose of dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DEX), or a combination of DEX and methylprednisolone acetate (MPA), on fasting blood glucose (FBG) and white blood cell count (WBC) when administered perineurally via ACB. Material and Methods: A single-center retrospective study on total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was performed and a total of 95 patients were included in the final analysis. Patients were divided into three groups based on adjuvants received in ACB: Control group (N = 41) and two treatment groups, DEX group (N = 33) and DEX/MPA group (N = 21). Our primary outcomes were the change of FBG from its preoperative baseline value on postoperative day (POD) 2. The secondary outcomes included change of FBG on POD 0 and POD 1, and change of WBC on POD 0, POD 1, and POD 2. Results: The FBG change from baseline in the DEX group was significantly higher than that in the control group (difference = 14.04, 95% CI: 1.3 to 26.77), P = 0.031) on POD 0. The WBC change from baseline in the DEX/MPA group was statistically significant higher than control on POD 0 (2.62 (1.52 to 3.37), P < 0.0001). No significant differences between DEX and DEX/MPA group were found on any given postoperative days for FBG and WBC. Conclusion: This study provided preliminary safety data on the use of a combination of glucocorticoids with hydrophilic (DEX) and lipophilic (MPA) properties as local anesthetic adjuvants in ACB, which induced similar levels of changes on FBG and WBC as those from both control and DEX alone group.

Electrochemical pH-swing strategies offer a promising avenue for cost-effective and energy-efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, surpassing the traditional thermally activated processes and humidity-sensitive techniques. The concept of elevating seawater's alkalinity for scalable CO2 capture without introducing additional chemical as reactant is particularly intriguing due to its minimal environmental impact. However, current commercial plants like chlor-alkali process or water electrolysis demand high thermodynamic voltages of 2.2 V and 1.23 V, respectively, for the production of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) from seawater. These high voltages are attributed to the asymmetric electrochemical reactions, where two completely different reactions take place at the anode and cathode. Here, we developed a symmetric electrochemical system for seawater alkalization based on a highly reversible and identical reaction taking place at the anode and cathode. We utilize hydrogen evolution reaction at the cathode, where the generated hydrogen is looped to the anode for hydrogen oxidation reaction. Theoretical calculations indicate an impressively low energy requirement ranging from 0.07 to 0.53 kWh/kg NaOH for established pH differences of 1.7 to 13.4. Experimentally, we achieved the alkalization with an energy consumption of 0.63 kWh/kg NaOH, which is only 38% of the theoretical energy requirements of the chlor-alkali process (1.64 kWh/kg NaOH). Further tests demonstrated the system's potential of enduring high current densities (~20 mA/cm²) and operating stability over an extended period (>110 h), showing its potential for future applications. Notably, the CO2 adsorption tests performed with alkalized seawater exhibited remarkably improved CO2 capture dictated by the production of hydroxide compared to the pristine seawater. Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is an event of multifactorial origin with an incidence of 30% in the general population. Opioids such as fentanyl are being used as adjuvant to local anesthetic for its antiemetic effect. In this context, with this study we aimed to evaluate the impact of spinal fentanyl as an adjuvant on the incidence of PONV compared with a placebo, and shivering. A systematic search of randomized controlled trials that evaluated the use of spinal fentanyl in the prevention of PONV and shivering was conducted in different databases, of which 32 studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 2116 patients scheduled for various surgeries, including cesarean section, orthopedic surgery in the lower limb, hysterectomy, and transurethral resection of the prostate, were included in the final analysis. The meta-analysis estimated the relative risk of incidence of PONV in the first 24 hours after surgery and secondary outcomes included the shivering symptom. The use of intrathecal fentanyl was associated with lower incidence of PONV, but not statistically significant when compared to the placebo (RR: 0.74 CI95%: 0.55-1.01 P = 0.06). Subgroup analysis showed a statistically significant reduction in PONV incidences with lower doses between 10 and 15 μg (RR: 0.44 CI95%: 0.35–0.55 P < 0.00001, I2 = 0%) but not with higher doses 20–25 μg. Secondary outcomes showed a decrease in incidence with the use of fentanyl vs the placebo (RR: 0.49, CI95% 0.33-0.72 P = 0.0003). Current evidence shows that the use of spinal fentanyl decreases the incidence of PONV, an effect favored using low doses.

Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) is a highly damaging agricultural pest in many tropical and subtropical countries around the world and high temperatures usually affect its survival. To clarify the effect of short-term high temperatures on the survival and lifespan of Z. cucurbitae, newly emerged adults of three consecutive generations (F1, F2, and F3) were exposed to 25 °C, 33 °C, 37 °C, 41 °C, or 45 °C treatments for 1 h. The effect of these temperatures on survival and lifespan was evaluated using biological indicators such as lifespan and pupation rate. Then, to study the molecular regulatory mechanism of the lifespan of Z. cucurbitae after short-term high-temperature treatment, we exposed the newly emerged adults to 25 °C or 45 °C treatments for 1 h and used siRNA to interfere with the expression of the vitellogenin receptor (VgR) gene in the female to study the effect of the VgR gene on the lifespan of Z. cucurbitae. The results showed that the survival rate, lifespan, pupae weight, pupation rate, and emergence rate of Z. cucurbitae decreased with increased temperature, while the female sex ratio of offspring increased. The heat resistance of females was higher than that of males. Interference with the expression of the VgR gene resulted in shortening of the female’s lifespan by approximately 60% after exposure to 25 °C or 45 °C treatments for 1 h, which indicated involvement of the VgR gene in the regulation of Z. cucurbitae lifespan. This study provides a reference to guide integrated control of Z. cucurbitae in high-temperature seasons.

Climate change affects the population distribution of pests and their natural enemies, and predicting these effects is necessary for pest monitoring and green control. Lipaphis erysimi is an important vegetable pest, and its natural enemy, the Eupeodes corollae Fabricius has a strong predatory effect on the L. erysimi. To assess the spread trends of L. erysimi and its natural enemy, the hoverfly, E. corollae under current (1970-2000) and future climates (2041-2060), based on the MaxEnt model, this paper uses data on the geographical distribution of the historical occurrence of L. erysimi and E. corollae to speculate on their potential distribution areas worldwide and analyze the key environmental factors affecting the survival and spread of both. The results showed that the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 2.6 and RCP4.5 climatic conditions are favorable for the spread of L. erysimi, the RCP8.5 climatic conditions are unfavorable for the spread of L. erysimi, and all three future climatic conditions are unfavorable for the spread of E. corollae. The highest fitness of L. erysimi was found at the annual average temperature of 18 °C and the annual average precipitation of 900 mm, while the highest fitness of E. corollae was found at the annual average temperature of 10 °C and the lowest temperature in the coldest month of 0 °C. This study can provide a reference basis for monitoring and early warning and biological control of L. erysimi.

Climate change has increased the frequency of extreme heat events. Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) is an important tropical pest that typically changes its reproductive strategies in response to extremely high temperatures. Newly emerged adults of three consecutive generations (F1, F2, and F3) of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) were exposed to 25°C, 33°C, 37°C, 41°C, and 45°C treatments for 1 h to clarify the effects of short-term high temperatures on its reproduction. The influence of these temperatures on reproduction was evaluated using indicators, such as egg number. Newly emerged adults were exposed to 25°C and 45°C treatments for 1 h, and the expression of Vitellogenin receptor (VgR) gene in females was interfered with siRNA, and silencing efficiency of RNAi was evaluated. Results showed that short-term high temperatures, except for F1 treated at 45°C for 1 h to stimulate oviposition, exert a general adverse effect on the reproduction of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett). All F3 died after the 45°C treatment for 1 h. Silencing of the VgR gene resulted in the significant downregulation of VgR gene expression at both 24 and 72 h. The egg number, oviposition days, and hatchability of eggs were significantly lower than those of other treatment groups after interference, and the inhibition effect of egg number was the most evident, with a decrease of 88.4% and 95.2% at 25°C and 45°C, respectively, compared with that of the Control Check (CK). Ovarian development speed and diameter were also significantly lower than those of other treatment groups after the interference. The results of this study can provide a theoretical reference for the integrated control of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) during high-temperature seasons.

Matrine is a quinoline alkaloid extracted and separated from the dried root, fruit, and other parts of the plant Sophora flavescens using an organic solvent. Matrine exhibits a variety of biological activities and is widely used in pharmacy, agronomy, and other fields. Due to its low bioavailability, poor chemical stability, and toxicity to the central nervous system, a large number of researchers have searched for matrine derivatives with higher biological activity and safety by modifying its structure. In this review article, the research progress of matrine derivatives obtained using two methods (extraction from Sophora flavescens and structural modifications) from 2018 to 2022 in terms of pharmacological activity, mechanism of action, and structure–activity relationship are presented. The modification of matrine over the past five years has been mainly on the D-ring. Many new matrine alkaloids have been extracted from natural products, some of which have good pharmacological activity, which broadens the strategy for matrine structural modification in the future.

A field dynamic balancer is crucial to the applications of magnetically suspended turbomolecular pumps. Therefore, this paper presents a novel field dynamic balancing method based on autocentering control mode without any additional instrumentation. Firstly, the dynamics of the active magnetic bearing rotor system with unbalance are modeled. Through model analysis, it was found that making the rotor rotate around the geometric axis can improve the accuracy of dynamic balancing. Secondly, the relationship between the correcting masses and the synchronous currents based on the influence coefficient method is established. Then, an autocentering controller is designed to make the rotor rotate around the geometric axis. The synchronous currents can be detected and extracted by the current transducers to calculate the unbalance correction mass. Finally, the experimental results show that this novel field dynamic balancing method can effectively eliminate the majority of rotor unbalance. Compared with the original unbalance of a rotor, the synchronous current in the A-end has been reduced by 71.4% and the synchronous current in the B-end, by 90.8% with the proposed method.

The global morbidity of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has dramatically increased. Insulin resistance is the most important pathogenesis and therapeutic target of T2DM. The traditional Chinese medicine formula Astragalus mongholicus powder (APF), consists of Astragalus mongholicus Bunge [Fabaceae], Pueraria montana (Lour.) Merr. [Fabaceae], and Morus alba L. [Moraceae] has a long history to be used to treat diabetes in ancient China. This work aims to investigate the effects of APF on diabetic mice and its underlying mechanism. Diabetic mice were induced by High-fat-diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ). The body weight of mice and their plasma levels of glucose, insulin, leptin and lipids were examined. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, histology, and Western blot analysis were performed to validate the effects of APF on diabetic mice and investigate the underlying mechanism. APF reduced hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyerleptinemia and attenuate the progression of obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, these effects disappeared in leptin deficient ob/ob diabetic mice and STZ-induced insulin deficient type 1 diabetic mice. Destruction of either these hormones would abolish the therapeutic effects of APF. In addition, APF inhibited the protein expression of PTP1B suppressing insulin–leptin sensitivity, the gluconeogenic gene PEPCK, and the adipogenic gene FAS. Therefore, insulin–leptin sensitivity was normalized, and the gluconeogenic and adipogenic genes were suppressed. In conclusion, APF attenuated obesity, NAFLD, and T2DM by regulating the balance of adipoinsular axis in STZ + HFD induced T2DM mice.

Climate is a key factor affecting the potential distribution of insects, and the host is another important constraint for the distribution of pests. To elucidate changes in the potential distribution of Beauveria bassiana under climate change scenarios, this paper used the data of two different greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP8.5) to predict the potential distribution of B. bassiana and its typical host, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), based on the MaxEnt model. Then, the potential distribution of B. bassiana and B. dorsalis (Hendel) was compared, and their suitable growth area’s change and expansion trend under two different GHG emission scenarios were mastered. The results of this study show that the potential distribution area of B. bassiana will increase by 2,050 under the RCP8.5 climate scenario, mainly in central Europe and southwestern Asia, with an increased area of 3.28 × 105 km2. However, under the climate scenario of RCP2.6, the potential distribution area for B. bassiana decreased by 2.0 × 105 km2, mainly in North America. This study will provide a theoretical basis for the control of B. dorsalis (Hendel) with B. bassiana.

Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett), Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) are important pests of fruit and vegetable crops and are difficult to control because of their rapid reproduction rate and egg production. To investigate the key genes regulating reproduction in three fruit fly species, we selected genomic information of three fruit fly species, screened specific genes and single-copy homolog genes, and performed KEGG and GO enrichment analysis on specific genes and single-copy homolog genes of the strong positive select (SP); the results showed that Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett), B. dorsalis (Hendel), and C. capitata (Wiedemann) had seven, 11, and one Vitellogenin-related genes, respectively; Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) had 84 specific genes enriched in immune system-related pathways; B. dorsalis (Hendel) had 1,121 specific genes enriched in signaling pathways related to cell growth and differentiation; C. capitata (Wiedemann) had 42 specific genes enriched in the degradation and metabolism pathways of exogenous organisms; Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) may have a stronger immune system; B. dorsalis (Hendel) has a faster developmental and reproductive rate; and C. capitata (Wiedemann) has a higher detoxification capacity. Only one SP single-copy homolog gene (gene name: very long-chain specific acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, mitochondrial) is enriched in the fatty acid metabolic pathway in both Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) and B. dorsalis (Hendel) as well as in Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett) and C. capitata (Wiedemann). This study provides a molecular basis for studying the reproductive mechanisms of three fruit fly species and provides a scientific basis for developing effective control strategies for fruit flies.

Introduction The use of glucocorticoid as local anesthetic adjuvant in single-injection adductor canal block (ACB) is well-documented but its effects in the presence of an indwelling catheter is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the impacts of one-time perineural glucocorticoid injection on continuous adductor canal block in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Methods A single center retrospective study of 95 patients undergoing unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was performed. Patients were divided into three groups based on adjuvant received through ACB before continuous catheter placement: a control group with no adjuvant (N = 41), a treatment group with dexamethasone (DEX) as adjuvant (N = 33) and another treatment group with DEX/ Methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) as adjuvant (N = 21). The primary outcome was the amount of ropivacaine administered via patient controlled ACB catheter. Secondary outcomes included numeric pain score, perioperative opioid usage, immediately postoperative prosthetic knee joint active range of motion (AROM), opioid usage at 6 weeks and 3 months, length of stay and discharge disposition. Results Patients in both treatment groups demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in the requirement of self-administered ropivacaine than the control group on postoperative day (POD) 1 (pConclusion This study suggested that single dose perineural glucocorticoid injection with DEX or DEX/MPA significantly decreased the dose of local anesthetic ropivacaine infusion required through continuous ACB for TKA while maintaining comparable level of pain score and opioid consumption, and significantly more patients were discharged home.

Images of original pupae of Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) were normalized, grayed, and segmented to identify male and female pupae of this species via machine vision. The image of each pupa was divided into 25 small areas. The differences in surface texture features in each small area within 11 days were compared. The texture characteristics of both male and female pupae were screened by combining the eclosion of both sexes of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett). Results indicated that the pectinate setae on the abdominal backplane could be used as a basis for the identification of the male and female pupa of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett). Moreover, machine vision correctly identified these characteristics with an accuracy of 96.0%. This study lays a foundation for the identification of male and female pupae using machine vision and also for the comprehensive control of Z. cucurbitae (Coquillett).

Flax fibers are widely used as the strongest natural fibers in composite parts with advanced structures. Due to their excellent mechanical properties and recyclability, they have attracted more attention from the aviation and automotive industries, etc. These composite parts are usually obtained by preforming reinforcements or prepregs at high temperatures, and their mechanical behaviors are greatly affected by temperature variations. To improve the understanding of the mechanical properties of flax fiber materials, especially for the braided fabric with non-orthogonal structures, uniaxial tensile tests at different temperatures and tensile speeds were conducted on hollow tubular braided fabrics. The thermomechanical properties of Flax/Polyamide12 (PA12) prepregs were analyzed. The results show that temperature and tensile speed have obvious effects on the strength and shear stiffness of tubular fabrics. The strength and shear stiffness of the fabric decreases as the ambient temperature increases. Meanwhile, the strength of the fabric can also be improved by appropriately increasing the tensile speed. In addition, according to the experimental results, a theoretical model is established to describe the shear angle on the smallest circumference of the fabric, which provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent simulation process. The test results can provide a reference for the manufacture of flax fiber-reinforced composites with tubular structures.

Antibiotics in breeding industry can enter the environment through multiple pathways, thus accelerating the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), among which aerosol transmission is easily achieved and often overlooked. To elucidate the role of aerosols in this situation, the present study investigated the distribution characteristics of 107 ARG subtypes (targeting to eight different ARG types) and nine mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and bacterial community in animal (chicken cloaca), environment (aerosols) and human (nasopharynx) of a chicken farm (n = 42) in Henan Province. In total, 116 ARG subtypes and MGEs were identified in the poultry farm. The total bacterial concentration of aerosols inside the chicken house (3.117 × 104 CFU/m3) exceeded the corresponding limit. The microbial communities in the samples of cloaca swab (C) and the workers’ nasopharyngeal swab (N) were closer, while the abundance distribution of ARGs/ MGEs in cloacal swab (C) and aerosol (AI) in chicken house were much similar. There were certain consistency of the microbial community structure and the distribution of ARGs among the three groups of chicken cloaca, air aerosol, and workers’ nasopharynx. Our results highlighted that animal breeding does have a certain impact on the surrounding environment and human, and aerosols play an important role in this process.

The harm of agricultural pests presents a remarkable effect on the quality and safety of edible farm products and the monitoring and identification of agricultural pests based on the Internet of Things (IoT) produce a large amount of data to be transmitted. To achieve efficient and real-time transmission of the sensors’ data for pest monitoring, this paper selects 235 geographic coordinates of agricultural pest monitoring points and uses genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and simulated annealing (SA) to optimize the data transmission paths of sensors. The three intelligent algorithms are simulated by MATLAB software. The results show that the optimized path based on PSO can make the shortest time used for transmitting data, and its corresponding minimum time is 4.868012 s. This study can provide a reference for improving the transmission efficiency of agricultural pest monitoring data, provide a guarantee for developing real-time and effective pest control strategies, and further reduce the threat of pest damage to the safety of farm products.

Aims: To examine the association of social networks and community engagement with cognitive impairment among community-dwelling Chinese older adults. Methods: From November 2017 to May 2018, we selected 1,115 elderly individuals from 3 Chinese communities (Beijing, Hefei, and Lanzhou) using a random-cluster sampling method, and recorded data on demographics, social network characteristics, community activities, and cognitive function. The odds ratios (ORs) of these associations were adjusted for potential confounders in logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of cognitive impairment was 25.7% (n = 287). An adequate social network (OR 0.55; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.33–0.91) and enough social support from friends (OR 0.43; 95% CI 0.29–0.62) were negatively associated with cognitive impairment. Family support was not significantly associated with cognitive impairment (OR 0.64; 95% CI 0.34–1.21). Taking part in elderly group travel, communication with others using WeChat, and community activities such as Tai Chi and walking together were negatively associated with cognitive impairment. Conclusion: Social network characteristics and community engagement were found to be related to cognitive function among community-dwelling Chinese elderly adults.

Abstract Background Pneumatic tourniquet inflation during extremity surgery leads to profound and prolonged tissue ischemia. Its effect on tissue oxygenation is inadequately studied. Methods Patients undergoing elective ankle surgery with tourniquet application participated in this observational cohort study. Somatic and cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SstO2 and SctO2) were monitored using tissue near-infrared spectroscopy. Oxygenation was monitored distally (SstO2-distal) and proximally to the tourniquet, on the contralateral leg, and the forehead (a total of 4 tissue beds). Tissue oxygenation at different time points was compared. The magnitude, duration, and load (product of magnitude and duration) of tissue desaturation during tourniquet inflation were correlated with tissue resaturation and hypersaturation after tourniquet deflation. Results Data of 26 patients were analyzed. The tourniquet inflation time was 120 ± 31 mins. Following a rapid desaturation from 77 ± 8% pre-inflation to 38 ± 20% 10 mins post-inflation, SstO2-distal slowly and continuously desaturated and reach the nadir (16 ± 11%) toward the end of inflation. Zeugodacus cucurbitae is an important pest of fruit and vegetable crops in tropical and subtropical regions, and high-temperature stress can have different effects on the development and reproduction of successive generations of Z. cucurbitae. To clarify the multigenerational effects of short-time high temperature on the development and reproduction of Z. cucurbitae, the newly emerged adults of the contemporary (F1 generation) and the next generation (F2 generation) were exposed to short-term high temperatures of 25 °C, 33 °C, 37 °C, 41 °C, and 45 °C for 1 h, and the multigenerational (F1, F2, and F3 generation) effects of these temperatures on the development and reproduction of Z. cucurbitae were evaluated. The results showed that (1) when the F1 was exposed to short-term high temperature, the egg production and lifespan of the F1 decreased continuously with the increasing temperature, except for the 45 °C treatment for 1 h, which stimulated egg production. Only the 41 °C group had significantly higher egg production and lifespan than the control group in the F3. (2) In the F1 and F2 that were exposed to short-term high temperature, the F1 and F3 were consistent with the results of F1 that were exposed to short-term high temperature. In conclusion, the effects of high-temperature intensity and frequency on multiple generations of Z. cucurbitae were different. The results of this study can elucidate the effects of short-term high-temperature stress on the growth, development, and reproduction of Z. cucurbitae in different generations, and provide a reference basis for the integrated control of Z. cucurbitae.

Cyromazine is an insect growth regulator insecticide with high selectivity and is widely used in the production and cultivation of fruits and vegetables. In recent years, incidents of excessive cyromazine residues in food have occurred frequently, and it is urgent to establish an accurate, fast, and convenient method for the detection of cyromazine residues to ensure the safety of edible agricultural products. To achieve rapid detection of cyromazine residues, we prepared a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for the detection of cyromazine residues in agricultural products. Samples of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), and water were tested for the recovery rate of cyromazine. The results showed that the concentration of cyromazine showed a good linear relationship with the peak response current of the sensor developed in this study. The lower limit of detection for cyromazine was 0.5 µmol/L, and the sensor also had good reproducibility and interference resistance. This paper can be used as a basis for the study of methods for the detection of cyromazine residues in edible agricultural products.

In order to achieve rapid detection of thiamethoxam residues in mango, cowpea and water, this study modified the screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to make a specific molecular imprinting sensor (Thiamethoxam-MIP/Au/rGO/SPCE) for thiamethoxam. An integrated smartphone platform was also built for thiamethoxam residue analysis. The performance of the complete system was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The system was then applied for the rapid determination of thiamethoxam residues in water, mango and cowpea samples. The results showed that the molecular sensor showed good linearity in the range 0.5–3.0 μmol/L of thiamethoxam. The detection limit of thiamethoxam was 0.5 μmol/L. Moreover, the sensor had good reproducibility and anti-interference performance. The average recovery rates of the pesticide residues in water, mango and cowpea samples were in the range of 90–110% with relative standard deviations < 5%. The rapid detection system for thiamethoxam residue constructed in this study was simple, reliable, reproducible and had strong anti-interference. It has broad application prospects in the field detection of thiamethoxam residue, and serves as a valuable reference for the further development of rapid detection technology of pesticide residues in the field of environment and food safety.

Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide widely used in the production and cultivation of crops. In recent years, the extensive use of imidacloprid in agricultural production has resulted in large amounts of pesticide residues in agricultural products and the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a rapid, accurate, sensitive and convenient method for detecting imidacloprid pesticide residues to ensure the safety of agricultural products and the environment. To clarify how to use the molecular imprinting method for the electrochemical rapid residue detection of imidacloprid. This paper selected reduced graphene oxide and gold nanoparticles as modifiers modified on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) chitosan as a functional monomer, and imidacloprid as template molecule to prepare molecularly imprinted polymer, and applied this sensor to the residue detection of imidacloprid. In this paper, a quantitative seismic prediction technique of multi-parameter shale brittleness index suitable for the environment with complex structural stress was developed in order to confirm highly brittle intervals and favorable fracturing zones in the shale reservoirs in the Jiaoshiba Block, Fuling shale gas field, Sichuan Basin. Firstly, the effect of structural compression stress on the brittleness characteristics of rocks were figured out by analyzing structures, mineral composition, development degree of fractures in cores, well logging and seismic data comprehensively. Secondly, according to the Rickman formula, a new brittleness index prediction model based on Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and shear modulus × density was established by introducing the shear modulus which reflects lateral shear stress–strain. Finally, the quantitative prediction technique of multi-parameter shale brittleness index suitable for the environment with complex structural stress was developed by virtue of the superiority of an elastic rock brittleness index method based on mineral composition to accurately calculate the brittleness index of a full hole. Field application shows that this technique is reliable, since its prediction results coincide with the calculated brittleness index of exploratory wells which are not used for modeling, with a relative error margin below 4%; and that the brittleness index of good shale of Upper Ordovician Wufeng Fm–Lower Silurian Longmaxi Fm in the Jiaoshiba Block increases from the top to the bottom and is stably distributed laterally. Particularly, the Wufeng–Longmaxi 11 is the highest in brittleness index, so it is the most favorable interval for penetrating and fracturing of horizontal wells. PLA is widely used in the field of disposable products for its good transparency, high strength, high modulus, and good processing performance. However, the crystallization rate and crystallinity of PLA are weak. In actual production, the PLA products that are typically obtained are amorphous with poor heat resistance, which greatly limits the application range of PLA products. Finding an effective nucleating agent to improve the transparency of PLA has been a hot topic in research. This study found that Cerium fluoride (CeF3) can effectively improve the crystallinity of PLA/CeF3 (P/F) films. When the content of CeF3 in PLA was 1 wt %, the retention ratio of visible light transmittance was 82.36%, the crystallinity was 29.8%, and the tensile strength was 59.92 MPa. Compared to pure PLA, the crystallinity of P/F1 increased by 56% and tensile strength increased by 8.76%. This study provided an alternative scheme that maintained the PLA film’s transparency and improved the crystallinity of PLA, which significantly expanded the application of PLA.

Purpose: Dynamic remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) around tumor cells is crucial for the tumor progressions. However, the mechanism is not well defined. Here, we aimed to reveal the underlying mechanism of ECM induced metastasis and provide innovative strategy to suppress the distant metastasis induced by ECM. Materials and Methods: IHC was used to detect the expression of target proteins. H&E staining was used to evaluate the growth of tumor in vivo. Using wound healing and transwell assay, we examined the ability of cell to metastasis. We employed IF and Western blot to detect the expression of target proteins. And qRT-PCR was used to examine the target genes in mRNA level. We also applied flow cytometry to examine the percent of CD133+ cell population. Results: Herein, we observed elevated expression of type I collagen in colorectal cancer tissues from patients with high metastasis. Additionally, colorectal cancer cells cultured on 2D collagen reveal obviously enhanced capability of metastasis and tumorigenesis both in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrated that the activation of PI3K/AKT signal induced by integrin α2β1 resulted in the enhanced metastatic capability and stemness of colorectal cancer cells. Moreover, we found that Snail worked as the downstream of PI3K/AKT signaling, resulting in the intensive invasion and metastasis of colorectal cancer. Blocking the pathway by applying E7820 successfully reversed the type I collagen induced distant metastasis in colorectal cancer. Conclusion: Combining E7820 and chemotherapeutic agents to block the integrin α2β1/PI3K/AKT/Snail signaling pathway revealed dramatic enhanced tumor suppression and provided an innovative approach for clinical colorectal cancer treatment.
