BackgroundExcessive inflammation poses significant risks to human physical and mental health. Astilbe grandis, a traditional Miao medicine, is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, the specific anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of many compounds within this plant remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of two characteristic oleanane triterpenoids, 3α-acetoxyolean-12-en-27-oic acid (1) and 3β-acetoxyolean-12-en-27-oic acid (2), isolated from Astilbe grandis, using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced Macrophages.MethodsThe anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of compounds 1 and 2 were investigated by establishing an LPS-induced inflammation model in RAW 264.7 cells and THP-1 cells. Nitric oxide (NO) levels were assessed using the Griess method. The concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was determined using western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Additionally, the phosphorylation level of p65 in nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) was assessed through western blotting. The nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 was assessed through immunofluorescence staining. Finally, the binding affinity of the compounds to NF-κB p65 target was validated through molecular docking.ResultsCompounds 1 and 2 significantly inhibited the expression of NO, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, COX-2, and iNOS in LPS-induced Macrophages. Mechanistically, they attenuated the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway by downregulating the phosphorylation level and nuclear translocation of p65.ConclusionThis study elucidates the anti-inflammatory activities and potential mechanism of the characteristic oleanane triterpenoids with C-14 carboxyl group, compounds 1 and 2, in LPS-induced Macrophages by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway for the first time. These findings suggest that these two compounds hold promise as potential candidates for anti-inflammatory interventions in the future.

Abstract Incomplete biomass burning produces considerable amounts of pyrogenic carbonaceous materials (PCMs), which are widely distributed in environmental matrices. Those PCMs undergo different environmental processes and consequently have non-negligible impacts on the global carbon cycle, ecological functions and environmental security. This review provided a comprehensive review of qualitative and quantitative methods, carbon sequestration capabilities and other ecosystem functions of PCMs. In addition, the generation mechanism and environmental health risks of emerging contaminants, especially persistent free radicals (EPFRs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with PCMs were discussed. The results showed that the coexisting kerogen and coal may interfere with PCMs quantification, and that estimates of PCMs pools vary significantly due to methodological differences, natural variability and limited spatial coverage. The input of PCMs into soils increased soil carbon sequestration through direct carbon contribution and indirect negative priming effect on native SOC. In addition, PCMs can improve soil structure and properties and immobilize/degrade pollutants, which is conducive to the restoration of soil ecology. However, various contaminants associated with PCMs may threaten ecological safety, and thus their formation mechanisms and toxicological pathway to living organisms need to be further investigated. The development of standards for PCMs identification and quantification, application protocols of PCMs in pilot scale, and assessing the effects of PCMs on soil health deserve extended studies.

An in-depth understanding of the relationship between innovation factor allocation, the institutional environment, and high-quality economic development can help us better comprehend how better productivity promotes high-quality, regionally coordinate, and balanced economic development. Using panel data of 30 provincial-level regions in China from 2011 to 2019, we explore the effect of innovation factor allocation on high-quality economic development and the moderating effects of different institutional environments. First, we construct a comprehensive indicator system for innovation factor allocation and a new model to calculate the weights of various indicators of innovation factors. Second, we apply TOPSIS and grey correlation to measure the level of innovation factor allocation, and construct a modified gravity model to generate a directed weighted spatial association network of this allocation as a spatial weight matrix. Finally, we use the spatial Durbin model to empirically test the spatial effects of innovation factor allocation on high-quality economic development under different institutional environments. We find that: First, innovation factor allocation significantly positively affects the high-quality development of the local economy, while it has negative spatial spillover effects on neighboring areas. The impact of different types of institutional environments on high-quality economic development exhibits an inverted “U” shape. China's institutional environment has not crossed the critical threshold of this “U'' shaped relationship. Thus, different types of institutional environments can still effectively strengthen the role of innovation factor allocation in promoting high-quality economic development. In particular, the strengthening effect of online government is the strongest and its negative impact is the weakest. Overall, this study is of great significance for optimizing innovation factor allocation in various regions and promoting high-quality economic development.

Abstract Many Chinese wrinkle studies continue to use non-Chinese scales because few Chinese-based wrinkle scales have been developed. The study aims to develop a crow’s feet grading scale for Chinese individuals. We enrolled 608 healthy Chinese subjects and measured data through the DermaTOP system. We chose exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to reduce the dimensions of the data. A three-factor structure was obtained by using EFA, and it explained a cumulative total of 89.551% of the variance. A computational formula was obtained by calculating the total factor tilt scores and taking the variance contribution rate of three factors as the weight. Based on the computational formula, a grading map was designed and tested. The model validation was conducted using both subjective assessments from the expert panel and objective results from the model calculations. The results showed that our grading scale model is stable. This study developed a Chinese crow’s feet (CCF) grading scale, which included a parameter, a grading map, and literal descriptions. The CCF grading scale is a validated tool for evaluating the effects of cosmetics or specific therapies. More importantly, the CCF scale was developed based on objective data, which may inspire new ideas for wrinkle grading scale development in the future.

The incidence of breast cancer (BC) continues to rise steadily, posing a significant burden on the public health systems of various countries worldwide. As a member of the tumor microenvironment (TME), CD8+ T cells inhibit cancer progression through their protective role. This study aims to investigate the role of CD8+ T cell-related genes (CTRGs) in breast cancer patients. Methods: We assessed the abundance of CD8+ T cells in the TCGA and METABRIC datasets and obtained CTRGs through WGCNA. Subsequently, a prognostic signature (CTR score) was constructed from CTRGs screened by seven machine learning algorithms, and the relationship between the CTR score and TME, immunotherapy, and drug sensitivity was analyzed. Additionally, CTRGs’ expression in different cells within TME was identified through single-cell analysis and spatial transcriptomics. Finally, the expression of CTRGs in clinical tissues was verified via RT-PCR. Results: The CD8+ T cell-related prognostic signature consists of two CTRGs. In the TCGA and METABRIC datasets, the CTR score appeared to be negatively linked to the abundance of CD8+ T cells, and BC patients with higher risk score show a worse prognosis. The low CTR score group exhibits higher immune infiltration levels, closely associated with inhibiting the tumor microenvironment. Compared with the high CTR score group, the low CTR score group shows better responses to chemotherapy and immune checkpoint therapy. Single-cell analysis and spatial transcriptomics reveal the heterogeneity of two CTRGs in different cells. Compared with the adjacent tissues, CD163L1 and KLRB1 mRNA are downregulated in tumor tissues. Conclusions: This study establishes a robust CD8+ T cell-related prognostic signature, providing new insights for predicting the clinical outcomes and treatment responses of breast cancer patients.

In this study, four highly efficient protein-degrading bacteria (Siccibactercolletis, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus sp. (in: Firmicutes)) were screened from soil and fermentation beds and prepared into a mixed microbial agent in a ratio of 1:1:1:1. The effects of inoculation with protein-degrading functional bacteria on nitrogen transformation rate, microbial community, and functional genes during chicken manure–rice husk composting were studied. With the addition of functional agents, the nitrogen loss in chicken manure composting was reduced to 17.05%, and ammonia emissions were also reduced. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cocci, and Actinobacteria became the dominant bacterial communities, accounting for 85.41%~98.52% of the overall bacterial community in the compost; it promoted the growth of microorganisms such as Pseudogracilibacillus and Lachnospiraceae in the compost. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the addition of functional bacterial agents enhanced the expression of nitrogen fixation genes (nifK, nifH, and glnA) during the high-temperature phase, increased the diversity of bacteria associated with the nitrogen cycle in the compost, and improved the absorption and fixation of nitrogen source elements by microorganisms. Additionally, it strengthened the correlation between microbial communities, the composting environment, and functional genes. This study provides a theoretical basis for the efficient application of microbial agents and the reduction of pollution in chicken manure hull composting.

As the world's largest grain producer, China's activities in virtual water trade for grain are particularly noteworthy. The imbalance of grain production and consumption among regions poses challenges to agricultural development and the sustainable use of water resources. Most of the previous research focused on the driving analysis of factors affecting agricultural water use at the production end. It is necessary to further explore the driving factors of virtual water flow (VWF) caused by grain trade on the consumption side, and consider the impact of production and consumption on the entire process of agricultural water use. This study combines the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) index decomposition method and multiple regression model to analyze the main natural and social driving factors of VWF. The study also initiates the construction of an analytical framework for the dynamic interaction of coupled social hydrology and Metacoupling systems. The results indicate that economic growth is the primary driver behind the increase in VWF. The water intensity effect and industrial structure effect act as constraints on VWF. Notably, water intensity has the most significant negative effect, with contributions of − 118.9 Gm³ and − 192.4 Gm³ to the virtual water output and input areas, respectively. Conversely, the economic, demographic, and dependence effect play a promoting role. Among these, the positive economic effect far exceeds population and dependence effects, contributing 189.7 Gm³ and 231.3 Gm³ to the virtual water output and input areas, respectively. The analytical framework of coupled social hydrology and the dynamic interaction of Metacoupling systems reveals that VWF couples water resources with multiple systems through the production-consumption-pollution chain. Simultaneously, it achieves long-distance interactions across spaces through cross-space VWF, exhibiting socio-hydrological interactions. The input area displays a forward cycle, while the output area exhibits the opposite. These findings can serve as a theoretical reference for controlling grain VWF.

Active school travel (AST) confers considerable health and environmental benefits. While evidence on AST associates for older children, and in relation to the physical built environment, has grown significantly over time, less is known regarding AST associates in younger children and socio-environmental associates of AST in this age group. In this research, we seek to determine the relationships between a range of factors across the ecological spectrum and children’s AST at 6 years and at 8 years of age, controlling for maternal education and number of times moved since 4 years. Structural equation modelling was used to identify factors associated with AST at 6 years. Due to the poor overall fit for the 8 year SEM model, a path model was instead performed to explore the direct relationships between AST and other observed variables. Conventional disinfection techniques, relying on a single disinfection step, often fail to directly eliminate microorganisms, instead causing them to enter a viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state. However, microorganisms in the VBNC state retain metabolic activity and can reactivate under suitable conditions, representing a “hidden source of contamination” that threatens drinking water safety. This study fundamentally assessed the feasibility of combined disinfection methods by integrating UV254 with disinfectant (NaClO, PAA, and PDS) for inactivating Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), an opportunistic pathogen that has been widely detected in water supply systems. The number of culturable cells was determined using the heterotrophic plate counting (HPC) method, and the number of VBNC cells was quantified using our recently developed qPCR approach. Quantitative analyses showed that combined disinfection methods can effectively reduce both culturable and VBNC cells by several orders of magnitude compared to a single disinfection step. Notably, VBNC P. aeruginosa, after 30 min of UV/NaCIO treatment, was below the detection limit (3.191 log CFU/mL) of PMA-qPCR. The reactivation experiment also confirmed that VBNC P. aeruginosa did not reactivate for 16 h after 30 min of UV/NaClO treatment under controlled laboratory conditions. The higher disinfection capacity of combined methods can be attributed to the generation of reactive radicals. This study highlighted combined disinfection as a promising approach for the inactivation of bacteria in the VBNC state, yet further studies are needed before an application can be considered for minimizing VBNC reactivation in city utility water processing or high-risk building water distribution systems.

The impact of the chalcogen atomic electronegativity (O, S, and Se atoms) of new organic molecules on excited-state dynamical reactions is self-evident. Inspired by this kind of distinguished photochemical characteristic, in this work, we performed a computational investigation of chalcogen-substituted 3,6-bis(4,5-dihydroxyoxazo-2-yl)benzene-1,2-diol (BDYBD) derivatives (i.e., BDYBD-O, BDYBD-S, and BDYBD-Se). In this paper, we pay close attention to characteristic BDYBD derivatives that contain intramolecular double hydrogen bonds (O1–H2···N3 and O4–H5···N6). The main goal of this study was to explore how changes in atomic electronegativity affect the way hydrogen bonds interact and how excited molecules affect transfer protons. We go into further detail in the main text of the paper. By fixing our attention to geometrical variations and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra between the S0 and S1 states, exploring hydrogen bonding behaviors using the core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index, and simulating hydrogen bonding energy (EHB) via the atom in molecule (AIM) method, we clarified the photo-induced strengthened dual hydrogen bonding interactions that facilitate the excited-state dual-proton transfer (ESDPT) behavior of BDYBD derivatives. The reorganization of charge stemming from photoexcitation further verifies the tendencies of ESDPT reactions. We relied on constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs) by adopting a restrictive optimization approach, and herein, we finally clarify the gradual ESDPT mechanism of BDYBD derivatives. Particularly, we confirm that the variation in chalcogen atomic electronegativity has a regulatory effect on the ESDPT behavior of BDYBD derivatives; that is, the lower the atomic electronegativity, the more favorable it is for the gradual ESDPT reaction.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a common industrial organic solvent and environmental contaminant. People are exposed to TCE through occupational contact or environmental pollution, which leads to serious human health hazards. A large number of studies have shown that oxidative stress plays an important role in the TCE-induced multi-target organ toxicity. However, the research of related signaling pathways remains to be deepened. In this review, we summarized the epidemiological, animal, and cellular studies correlated to liver toxicity, kidney toxicity, cardiac developmental toxicity, placental developmental toxicity, neurodevelopmental toxicity, and autoimmune response induced by TCE. In addition, the possible molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress in TCE-induced toxicity were concluded, including DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, cell apoptosis, and abnormal activation of the immune system. Through literature review, we proposed that nuclear factor E2 related factor 2 may play an important role in mediating TCE-induced target organ toxicity, providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of adverse health effects caused by TCE.

Abstract Background Driven by population aging and the rapid urbanization in China, many migrant elderly following children (MEFC) moved to big cities to care for their grandchildren. The purpose of this study is to clarify the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and self-reported oral health status among the MEFC in Weifang, China. Methods Multistage cluster random sampling was used to select the participants and finally 613 MEFC were included in the survey. The Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) and the Chinese version of the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) scale were used for data collection. Descriptive analysis, Rao-Scott test, t-test and structural equation modeling (SEM) were conducted in this study. Results Mean score of GOHAI of the MEFC was 54.95 ± 6.47. The SES of MEFC exerted positive direct effect both on social support (standardized coefficient = 0.15) and self-reported oral health status (standardized coefficient = 0.22); social support exerted positive direct effect on self-reported oral health status (standardized coefficient = 0.17). Abstract Background With the accelerated urbanization and aging population in China, more and more migrant older with children (MOC) moved to new cities. Previous studies mainly explored the acculturation of MOC, yet few focused on the health conditions of this vulnerable group. This study aimed to investigate the effects of oral health and social support on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of MOC in Weifang, China. Method This study was a cross-sectional study and participants were selected by multi-stage cluster random sampling in Weifang, China. The HRQOL was assessed via the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) which included the mental component summary (MCS) and the physical component summary (PCS). The oral health was evaluated by the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). The social support was administered using the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). Descriptive analysis was used to describe participants’ sociodemographic variables, oral health and social support. Univariate analysis and binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between the social support, oral health and HRQOL. Results and discussion It was found that 25.0% of MOC were defined as MCS poor and PCS poor, respectively. Those participants with average and low monthly household income compared to those around them, average and poor oral health, and low levels of social support were more likely to have poor PCS. Those with temporary residence permits, fair and poor oral health, and medium and low levels of social support were more likely to report poor MCS. Conclusion Results indicated that better social support and oral health led to higher HRQOL of MOC. Implications for the government, communities and families of MOC were given to improve their HRQOL.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) triggers a severe hypersensitivity syndrome in the occupational population dependent on dendritic cells (DCs). Chloral hydrate (CH), the major oxidative metabolite of TCE, has been proved to be the culprit causative substance of TCE-induced hypersensitivity by human patch tests. Because redox imbalance is essential for chemical sensitizers-induced maturation of DCs, we predicted that CH would activate DCs by the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-mediated antioxidant response. This study selected THP-1 cells as the in vitro DC model, and we evaluated the cell activation markers, intracellular oxidative stress, and Nrf2 pathway related genes expression in response to CH in THP-1 cells. CH displayed significant stimulation of THP-1 cells activation, including CD54 and CD86 expression, IL-8 release, and cell migration, and damaged the redox balance by triggering ROS generation, GSH consumption, and antioxidase activities modulation. The levels of Nrf2 and its downstream genes (HO-1 and NQO1) in mRNA and protein expressions were upregulated by CH, and CH also promoted the nuclear translocation of Nrf2. Subsequently, we investigated the effects of antioxidant on Nrf2-mediated cell defense in CH treated cells. Pretreatment with curcumin dramatically reduced cell activation and oxidative stress triggered by CH in THP-1 cells. We also confirmed the specific role of Nrf2 in CH-induced cell activation using NRF2-knockout cells. Deficiency of Nrf2 inhibited cell activation and downregulated HO-1 and NQO1 expression in CH-challenged cells. These findings suggest that Nrf2-dependent redox homeostasis plays a pivotal role in CH-induced activation of THP-1 cells, thereby providing new knowledge of the allergen as well as the molecular mechanism involving in TCE-induce hypersensitivity syndrome.

ObjectiveTo assess diabetes eye service use in New Zealand among people aged ≥15 years by estimating service attendance, biennial screening rate, and disparities in the use of screening and treatment services.MethodsWe obtained Ministry of Health data from the National Non-Admitted Patient Collection on diabetes eye service events between 1 July 2006 and 31 December 2019 and sociodemographic and mortality data from the Virtual Diabetes Register and linked these using a unique patient identifier (encrypted National Health Index). We 1) summarized attendance at retinal screening and ophthalmology services, 2) calculated biennial and triennial screening rate, 3) summarized treatment with laser and anti-VEGF and used log-binomial regression to examine associations of all of these with age group, ethnicity, and area-level deprivation.ResultsIn total, 245,844 people aged ≥15 years had at least one diabetes eye service appointment attended or scheduled; half of these (n = 125,821, 51.2%) attended only retinal screening, one-sixth attended only ophthalmology (n = 35,883, 14.6%) and one-third attended both (n = 78,300, 31.8%). The biennial retinal screening rate was 62.1%, with large regional variation (73.9% in Southern District to 29.2% in West Coast). Compared with NZ Europeans, Māori were approximately twice as likely to never receive diabetes eye care or to access ophthalmology when referred from retinal screening, 9% relatively less likely to receive biennial screening and received the fewest anti-VEGF injections when treatment was commenced. Disparities in service access were also present for Pacific Peoples compared to NZ Europeans, younger and older age groups compared to those aged 50-59 years and those living in areas with higher deprivation.ConclusionsAccess to diabetes eye care is suboptimal, with substantial disparity between age groups, ethnicity groups, area level deprivation quintile and across districts. Efforts to improve access to and quality of diabetes eye care services must include strengthening data collection and monitoring.

Abstract The role of aerobic exercise in preventing and improving non-alcoholic fatty liver has been widely established. SRA is a long non-coding RNA, which has received increasing attention due to its important role in lipid metabolism. However, it is unclear whether aerobic exercise can prevent and treat hepatic lipid accumulation via SRA. The mice were randomly divided into four groups as follows, normal control group, normal aerobic exercise group, high-fat diet group (HFD), and high-fat diet plus aerobic exercise (8 weeks, 6 days/week, 18 m/min for 50 min, 6% slope) group (HAE). After 8 weeks, the mice in the HAE group showed significant improvement in hepatic steatosis. Body weight as well as blood TC, LDL-C, and liver TG levels were significantly lower in the HAE group than in the HFD group. Compared with the HFD group, the expression of SRA was markedly suppressed and the expression of ATGL was significantly increased in the HAE group. Additionally, the JNK/P38 signaling was inhibited, the pro-inflammatory factors were down-regulated, and the anti-inflammatory factor was increased. In addition to this, the same results were shown in experiments with overexpression of SRA. The results of this study provided new support for aerobic exercise to improve hepatic lipid metabolism via lncRNA.

Inspired by the distinguished regulated photochemical and photophysical properties of 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzazole derivatives, in this work, the novel bis(2′-benzothiazolyl)hydroquinone (BBTHQ) fluorophore is explored, looking at its photo-induced behaviors associated with different substituted atomic electronegativities, i.e., BBTHQ-SO, BBTHQ-SS and BBTHQ-Se compounds. From the structural changes, infrared (IR) vibrational variations and simulated core-valence bifurcation (CVB) indexes for the dual hydrogen bonds for the three BBTHQ derivatives, we see that low atomic electronegativity could be conducive to enhancing hydrogen bonding effects in the S1 state. Particularly, the O4-H5⋯N6 of BBTHQ-SO and the O1-H2⋯N3 of BBTHQ-SSe could be strengthened to be more intensive in the S1 state, respectively. Looking into the charge recombination induced by photoexcitation, we confirm a favorable ESDPT trend deriving from the charge reorganization of the dual hydrogen bonding regions. By constructing the potential energy surfaces (PESs) along with the ESDPT paths for the BBTHQ-SO, BBTHQ-SS and BBTHQ-Se compounds, we not only unveil stepwise ESDPT behaviors, but also present an atomic electronegativity-regulated ESDPT mechanism.

They experimentally demonstrate the presence of elastic spin waves, Rayleigh and Lamb waves, generated by a chiral-meta source, characterizing their basic properties.

Abstract Background Studies had shown that social integration was related to the utilization of medical services. Few studies investigated the relationship between social integration and medical returns among the elderly. None research had ever clarified the effect of social integration on medical returns among the migrant elderly following children (MEFC) to new cities. This study aimed to explore the association between social integration and medical returns among the MEFC in Jinan, China. Method This cross-sectional study included 627 MEFC in Jinan China. Social integration was evaluated by economic integration, acculturation, and identification. Medical return was assessed by asking the subjects whether go back to hometown to use the medical services when ill. Chi-squared test and multivariable logistic regression were applied to analyze the association between social integration and medical returns of the MEFC. Results and discussion It was found that 20.3% of the MEFC had a medical return. As for social integration, those who had not joined local medical insurance (OR = 3.561, 95% CI 1.577–8.039, p = 0.002) and were unwilling to stay for a long time (OR = 2.600, 95% CI 1.620–4.174, p = 0.001) were more likely to have a medical return. Furthermore, our findings showed that the MEFC who were accompanied by one or more (OR = 1.568, 95% CI 1.027–2.392, p = 0.037) were more likely to have a medical return than those who migrated alone. Conclusion Negative relationship between social integration and medical returns was found among the MEFC, which means the better social integration of the MEFC would generally have fewer medical return, as well as the better refunding connections of the medical insurance between the current residence and hometown.

Background: Brief hypoxic exposures are increasingly applied as interventions for aging-related conditions. To optimize the therapeutic impact of hypoxia, knowledge of the sex-related differences in physiological responses to hypoxia is essential. This study compared hypoxia-induced hypoxemic responses in elderly men and women.Methods: Seven elderly men (70.3 ± 6.0 years old) and nine women (69.4 ± 5.5 years old) breathed 10% O2 for 5 min while arterial (SaO2; transcutaneous photoplethysmography) and cerebral tissue O2 saturation (ScO2; near-infrared spectroscopy), ventilatory frequency, tidal volume, minute-ventilation, and partial pressures of end-tidal O2 (PETO2) and CO2 (mass spectrometry) were continuously monitored. Cerebral tissue oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) equaled (SaO2–ScO2)/SaO2.Results: During 5 min hypoxia SaO2 fell from 97.0 ± 0.8% to 80.6 ± 4.6% in the men and from 96.3 ± 1.4% to 72.6 ± 4.0% in the women. The slope ΔSaO2/min was steeper in the women than the men (−4.71 ± 0.96 vs. −3.24 ± 0.76%/min; p = 0.005). Although SaO2 fell twice as sharply per unit decrease in PETO2 in the women than the men (−1.13 ± 0.11 vs. −0.54 ± 0.06%/mmHg; p = 0.003), minute-ventilation per unit hypoxemia increased less appreciably in the women (−0.092 ± 0.014 vs. −0.160 ± 0.021 L/min/%; p = 0.023). OEF fell with hypoxia duration in the women, but remained stable in the men.Conclusion: During 5 min hypoxic breathing, elderly women experience more intense hypoxemia and reduced chemoreflex sensitivity vs. their male counterparts, which may lower OEF stability in women despite augmented O2 dissociation from hemoglobin during hypoxia. These sex-related differences merit attention when implementing brief hypoxic exposures for therapeutic purposes.

ObjectiveBiliary atresia (BA) presents as a severe infantile cholangiopathy disease, characterized by progressive liver fibrosis and the resulting poor prognosis. Leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin 2 (LECT2) was proposed as the key gene associated with hepatic fibrosis in BA, but the molecular mechanism is unclear. This study aims to investigate the function of LECT2 in BA.MethodsA total of 53 patients were enrolled in this study; 36 patients with BA, and 17 control patients with cholestasis, including congenital biliary dilations, biliary hypoplasia, and inspissated bile syndrome. The role of LECT2 in BA was analyzed using histological and cytological tests. The correlation between LECT2 and infiltrating immune cells was further analyzed by bioinformatics. The analyses were conducted using correlational analyses and ROC curves.ResultsLECT2 was highly expressed in infants with BA and positively related with fibrosis (0.1644 ± 0.0608 vs. 0.0779 ± 0.0053, p < 0.0001; rs = 0.85, p < 0.0001). Serum levels of LECT2 showed high distinguishing features for patients with BA having an AUC of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.90–1.00). CD163 was highly expressed in the aggravation of fibrosis (0.158 ± 0.062 vs. 0.29 ± 0.078, p < 0.0001), and the expression of LECT2 was positively correlated with the accumulation of CD163+ macrophages (r = 0.48, p = 0.003). The bioinformatic analysis also showed that LECT2 was positively correlated with macrophage M2 (r = 0.34, p = 0.03). TGF-β1 and CD163 colocalized to the portal area in the livers of patients with BA. Moreover, TGF-β1 upregulated the expression of LECT2.ConclusionLECT2 is highly expressed in both BA liver tissue and serum, and serum LECT2 is a potential diagnostic biomarker of BA. Meanwhile, TGF-β1 is secreted by macrophages to regulate LECT2 associated with BA liver fibrosis.

Abstract Background Effective tiller number (ETN) has a pivotal role in determination of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grain yield. ETN is a complex quantitative trait regulated by both genetic and environmental factors. Despite multiple tillering-related genes have been cloned previously, few of them have been utilized in practical breeding programs. Results In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for ETN using a panel of 490 rice accessions derived from the 3 K rice genomes project. Thirty eight ETN-associated QTLs were identified, interestingly, four of which colocalized with the OsAAP1, DWL2, NAL1, and OsWRKY74 gene previously reported to be involved in rice tillering regulation. Haplotype (Hap) analysis revealed that Hap5 of OsAAP1, Hap3 and 6 of DWL2, Hap2 of NAL1, and Hap3 and 4 of OsWRKY74 are favorable alleles for ETN. Pyramiding favorable alleles of all these four genes had more enhancement in ETN than accessions harboring the favorable allele of only one gene. Moreover, we identified 25 novel candidate genes which might also affect ETN, and the positive association between expression levels of the OsPILS6b gene and ETN was validated by RT-qPCR. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis on data released on public database revealed that most ETN-associated genes showed a relatively high expression from 21 days after transplanting (DAT) to 49 DAT and decreased since then. This unique expression pattern of ETN-associated genes may contribute to the transition from vegetative to reproductive growth of tillers. Conclusions Our results revealed that GWAS is a feasible way to mine ETN-associated genes. The candidate genes and favorable alleles identified in this study have the potential application value in rice molecular breeding for high ETN and grain yield.

Abstract Hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and miR-21a-5p plays an important role in the occurrence and progression of hyperlipidemia. Here, we aimed to investigate the mechanism of aerobic exercise improved hyperlipidemia through enhancing miR-21a-5p expression. In this study, high-fat/high-cholesterol diet mice received 8 weeks of aerobic exercise intervention, then we collected plasma and liver samples, we found that there had a notable improvement in weight gain, blood lipid level, and liver steatosis in hyperlipidemia mice after 8 weeks of aerobic exercise intervention. Besides, aerobic exercise significantly up-regulated the expression of miR-21a-5p and provoked favorable changes in the expression of target genes. Knockdown of miR-21a-5p resulted in dysregulation of lipid metabolism and increased expression of FABP7, HMGCR, ACAT1, and OLR1. While aerobic exercise could alleviate miR-21a-5p knock-down induced lipid metabolism disorder. Taken together, these results demonstrated that aerobic exercise improved hyperlipidemia through miR-21a-5p-induced inhibition of target genes FABP7, HMGCR, ACAT1, and OLR1.

It has been recognized that colistin resistance is a growing problem that seriously impairs the clinical efficacy of colistin against bacterial infections. One strategy that has been proven to have therapeutic effect is to overcome the widespread emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens by combining existing antibiotics with promising non-antibiotic agents. In this work, antibiotic susceptibility testing, checkerboard assays and time-kill curves were used to investigate the antibacterial activity of the individual drugs and the potential synergistic activity of the combination. The molecular mechanisms of tetrandrine in combination with colistin were analyzed using fluorometric assay and Real-time PCR. To predict possible interactions between tetrandrine and MCR-1, molecular docking assay was taken. Finally, we evaluated the in vivo efficacy of tetrandrine in combination with colistin against MCR-positive Salmonella. Overall, the combination of tetrandrine and colistin showed significant synergistic activity. In-depth mechanistic analysis showed that the combination of tetrandrine with colistin enhances the membrane-damaging ability of colistin, undermines the functions of proton motive force (PMF) and efflux pumps in MCR-positive bacteria. The results of molecular docking and RT-PCR analyses showed that tetrandrine not only affects the expression of mcr-1 but is also an effective MCR-1 inhibitor. Compared with colistin monotherapy, the combination of tetrandrine with colistin significantly reduced the bacterial load in vivo. Our findings demonstrated that tetrandrine serves as a potential colistin adjuvant against MCR-positive Salmonella.

Electrochemical reduction of rare-earth elements is an important industrial process in the separation and purification of naturally occurring ore mixtures and concentrates. Due to the extremely low reduction potential, high-temperature molten salt mixtures are generally used for this process, which is very energy intensive. As an alternative, room-temperature ionic liquids can be used to achieve the same goals at lower environmental cost. For this to become viable on an industrial scale, further research is required to understand the electrochemical reduction process of single rare-earth elements and how different external factors influence the electrochemical deposition process. For this purpose, praseodymium was chosen as an example of a rare-earth element to study electrochemical deposition from an ionic liquid. It was found that Pr alone cannot be reduced at an Au electrode surface in significant quantities, likely due to the formation of a blocking layer on the electrode surface. The addition of a small concentration of a bismuth salt significantly enhances the deposition rate and is highly beneficial for the deposition and separation of Pr from the ionic liquid.

Air-coupled ultrasonic transducers based on novel piezoelectrets with extremely small acoustic impedance have some distinctive advantages including no coupling agent, flexibility, and eco-friendliness, compared to conventional ultrasonic transducers. Such advantages make them unique in the applications of nondestructive testing. In this study, a focused air-coupled ultrasonic transducer featuring a sphere-shaped transduction surface is designed by introducing flexible irradiated cross-linked polypropylene (IXPP) films. The characteristic of focusing is evaluated by numerical and experimental analysis. The results show that, by bending the IXPP film into a sphere, the ultrasonic energy can be concentrated to a certain small area to achieve better sensitivity and higher resolution. Furthermore, the IXPP focusing transducer has an obvious focusing effect when the opening radius D of the transducer is increased. Meanwhile, with the reducing radius R of the spherical surface and increasing frequency f of excitation, the value of the deviation coefficient α can be made smaller so that the transducer designed in this way can obtain a better focusing effect.

Background: Growing evidence shows the positive influence of neighbourhood green space on mental well-being among adults through multiple health behaviours, but similar studies are lacking for adolescents. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2019 wave of the Youth2000 survey series in Aotearoa, New Zealand with secondary school students (aged 10-19 years) from the city of Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland. Emotional well-being was measured with the World Health Organization-5 Well-being Index, and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale-short form. Neighbourhood green space was assessed using three different measures: percentage of green space, Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the distance to nearest green space from place of residence. Exposure areas of these measures were calculated using Euclidean buffers of 100m, 300m, 800m and 1600m around participants’ meshblock residential addresses. Three mediating (physical activity, social cohesion, sleep) and ten control variables (in adjusted models) were included in path analysis to test the direct and indirect relationships between green space and adolescent mental well-being. Results: In unadjusted models, percentage of green space had a negative relationship with emotional well-being, and inconsistent effects of NDVI were detected in different buffers. Minor indirect effects of physical activity and sleep were also found. Depressive symptoms and emotional well-being were more strongly related to other individual and neighbourhood factors (e.g., neighbourhood deprivation). After adjusting for control variables, no significant associations of green space with adolescent depressive symptoms and emotional well-being were identified. Conclusions: Urban neighbourhood green space does not appear to be a dominant factor contributing to adolescent mental well-being through physical activity, social cohesion and sleep. Appropriate individual and environmental control variables are needed to take into consideration in future studies that explore the green space-mental well-being relationships in adolescents.

Abstract Background Foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.] is an excellent crop known for its superior level of drought tolerance across the world. Especially, less water is needed during its germination period than the other cereal crops. However, the knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the abiotic stress effects on seed germination of foxtail millet is largely unknown. Results The water uptake pattern of foxtail millet seeds was ploted during germination period, according to which the germination time course of millet was separated into three phases. We sequenced the transcriptome of foxtail millet seeds, which were treated by PEG during different germination phases after sowing. The transcriptional studies revealed that more DEGs were identified during the further increase in water uptake period (phase III) than during the rapid initial uptake period (phase I) and the plateau period (phase II) under PEG stress. The pathway analysis of DEGs showed that the highly enriched categories were related to phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, plant hormone signal transduction and phenylalanine metabolism during phase III. The 20 phenylpropanoids-related genes of germinating foxtail millet were found to be down-regulated during the further increase in water uptake period under PEG stress. Further expression analysis identified 4 genes of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, 4-coumarate-CoA ligase 3, cinnamoyl-CoA reductase 1, cationic peroxidase SPC4 in phenylpropanoids-related pathway, which played important roles in foxtail millet in response to PEG stress during different germination periods. The studies of metabolites in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway revealed that higher amount of cinnamic acid was accumulated in germinating seeds under PEG stress, while the contents of p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid and sinapic acid were decreased. And the effects of five phenolic compounds on germination and growth of foxtail millet showed that 1 mM concentration of cinnamic acid inhibited shoot and root growth, especially root development. Ferulic acid, caffeic acid, sinapic acid and p-coumaric acid could increase the root length and root/sprout in lower concentration. Conclusions These findings suggest that key genes and metabolites of foxtail millet related with phenylpropanoids pathway may play prominent roles in the regulation of resistance to drought during germination. Foxtail millet can probably avoid drought by regulating the levels of endogenous allelochemicals.

Abstract Background Grain size is a key agronomic trait that is directly associated with grain yield in rice. Although several genes related to grain size in rice have been identified, our understanding of the mechanism of grain development is still limited. Results In this study, we reported the characterization of a novel seed size mutant mini seed 2 (mis2), in which the grain showed reduced length, width and thickness along with wrinkled surface. Microscopic analysis revealed that the spikelet epidermal cell size was reduced but the cell number was increased in the mis2 mutant, suggesting that MIS2 controls grain size by coordinately regulating epidermal cell size and cell number. Map-based cloning revealed that MIS2 encodes a receptor-like kinase CRINKLY4 (CR4) which showed the highest expression in developing panicles. The MIS2 protein is localized primarily on the plasma membrane along with the endosome. However, the Arg258Gln mutation located in extracellular domain in the mis2 mutant disturbed its subcellular localization. Additionally, three major haplotypes of MIS2 were identified in the japonica, indica and aus rice cultivars. The 18-bp InDel (insertion and deletion) in the 5′-UTR (untranslated region) caused different expression level of MIS2 in haplotypes. Conclusions We reported a key role of OsCR4 in controlling grain size and shape by coordinately regulating epidermal cell size and cell number. The Arg258 in the extracellular seven-repeat domain is essential for the correct subcellular behavior and function of the OsCR4 protein.

Background: Nurses are suffering from various stressors which adversely impact their work satisfaction and mental health. Research is scarce on optimism, one of the positive psychological resource which may reduce work-family conflict and improve work satisfaction.Objectives: This study aims to assess work satisfaction among Chinese nurses and to observe and illustrate the relationships among optimism, work-family conflict, and work satisfaction.Methods: This study was designed as a cross-sectional study with stratified sampling. From September 2019 to December 2020, a self-administered WeChat questionnaire was collected from 768 nurses online in China to evaluate the nurses' work satisfaction, optimism, and work-family conflict. Spearman correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were applied to examine associated factors of work satisfaction. A structural equation model was employed to test the mediating effect of work-family conflict in the relationship between optimism and work satisfaction.Results: Optimism were observed to have a positive correlation with work satisfaction while the correlation between work-family conflict and work satisfaction was observed to be negative. Optimism and work-family conflict explained 4.8 and 9.2% of the incremental variances of work satisfaction, respectively. Work-family conflict served as a mediator in the relationship between optimism and work satisfaction.Conclusions: Nurses in China experienced high levels of work satisfaction. Optimism could increase the chance of higher work satisfaction while work-family conflict increased the risk of lower work satisfaction. Psychological interventions and improvement of working conditions are essential to relieve work-family conflicts and enhance work satisfaction.

Harvesting multi-frequency sound energy from environmental noise is a meaningful topic to supply energy for potential devices. In this work, we constructed an array of Helmholtz resonators (HRs) with cross-linked polypropylene (IXPP) ferroelectret films on the inner walls of HR cavities, whose resonant frequencies range from 300 to 800 Hz and quasi-static piezoelectric coefficient d33 is 230 pC/N. The energy harvesting performance of IXPP films is investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, in a single HR with various sizes, showing the high energy conversion capability close to the resonant frequencies of HRs, e.g., 337, 375, 445, 522, 588, 661, 739, 782, and 795 Hz, in the experiment. By putting one, two, three, and four samples of nine different sized HRs in series connection in order, we measured the average output power of 3.16, 5.31, 7.36, and 8.66 nW at the resonant frequencies. It shows that the output power of IXPP films has been significantly improved at multiple frequencies by series connection of IXPP films. In parallel, the optimal electrical resistance increases in a quasilinear way compared to the number of HRs. These results are helpful for designing efficient sound energy harvesters in the broadband frequency range.

Demand for edible part yields, usually offered as headless carcass or fillets, is continuously increasing in all fish species. Therefore, slaughter yields are interesting traits for genetic improvement. However, phenotyping of slaughter yields cannot be done on live breeding candidates and the suitable alternative seems to be utilization of simple yield predictors in indirect selection recorded by ultrasound tomography. In this study, we evaluated the possibility of using ratio of abdominal fillet thickness (E8) either to the abdominal depth (E23) or as alternative to E23 – 2D_d abdominal depth (length between lateral line and abdominal part vertical to the dorsal fin) as predictors for genetic improvement of slaughter yields in common carp. The predictors were recorded on each fish at age of two years (E8/E23_2, E8/2D_d_2) and three years (market size) (E8/E23_3, E8/2D_d_3). An experimental stock was established from a partial factorial mating design of 27 dams and 29 sires. Phenotyping of simple yield predictors, headless carcass and fillet with skin yields (only market size), and other performance traits was done on 987 (second year) and 773 (market size) individuals, uniquely assigned to their parental pair. The predictors recorded on market sized fish showed slightly better heritability (0.41, 0.44), genetic correlations to the slaughter yields (0.78–0.86) and expected genetic gains (1.29–1.54%) of the slaughter yields. However, predictors recorded on two-year old fish showed a solid genetic potential for slaughter yields improvement (h2 = 0.27–0.40; rg = 0.64–0.72, expected genetic gain = 0.93–1.35%). These data suggest that the indirect selection for improved slaughter yields could be performed using simple and quickly-to-measure yield predictors, also applicable in two-year old fish that are much easier for handling and manipulation. These newest results could significantly simplify carp breeding program focused on genetic improvement of slaughter yields.

The aluminum foam sandwich (AFS), which perfectly combines the excellent merits of an aluminum foam core and face sheet materials, has extensive and reliable applications in many fields, such as aerospace, military equipment, transportation, and so on. Adhesive bonding is one of the most widely used methods to produce AFS due to its general applicability, simple process, and low cost, however, the bonding interface is known as the weak link and may cause a serious accident. To overcome the shortcomings of a bonded AFS interface, short carbon fiber as a reinforcement phase was introduced to epoxy resin to reinforce the interface adhesion strength of AFS. Single lap shear tests and three-point bending tests were conducted to study the mechanical behavior of the reinforced interface and AFS, respectively. The failure mechanism was studied through a macro- and microanalysis. The result showed that after the reinforcement of carbon fiber, the tangential shear strength of the interface increased by 73.65%. The effective displacement of AFS prepared by the reinforced epoxy resin is 125.95% more than the AFS prepared by the unreinforced epoxy resin. The flexure behavior of the reinforced AFS can be compared with AFS made through a metallurgical method. Three categories of reinforcement mechanisms were discovered: (a) the pull off and pull mechanism: when the modified carbon fiber performed as the bridge, the bonding strength improved because of the pull off and pull out of fibers; (b) adhesion effect: the carbon fiber gathered in the hole edge resulted in epoxy resins being gathered in there too, which increased the effective bonding area of the interface; (c) mechanical self-locking effect: the carbon fiber enhanced the adhesive filling performance of aluminum foam holes, which improved the mechanical self-locking effect of the bonding interface.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, was first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and has since become a pandemic. The COVID-19 containment measures were comparable to those used with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), although these were stricter and more organized, and were initiated earlier and on a larger scale. Based on the lessons learned from SARS, the Chinese government acted aggressively in response to COVID-19, through a unified and effective commanding system, using law-based and science-driven strategies, and coordinated deployment of medical resources. Additionally, the application of high-tech measures, traditional Chinese medicine, and hierarchical medical systems also played an important role in control measures. Despite the remarkable performance, the initial delay in response suggests that the coordination between public health and medical services, reserve and coordination of emergency materials, and capacity for disease control and prevention need to be strengthened.

Background Although complete resolution and recovery occurs in most children with an initial attack of acute pancreatitis (AP), a subset of children may progress to recurrent AP (RAP). RAP has serious effects to the individual and the socioeconomic burden. The aim of this project was to identify the independent risk factors for pediatric RAP so as to provide evidence for its prevention, early diagnosis and treatment.Methods A retrospective cohort study of children discharged from Tianjin Children’s Hospital from June 2017 to January 2020 was performed. Demographic and clinical variables, treatment strategies, clinical course and outcomes were collected. Independent risk factors of RAP were identified using the logistic regression model.Results Of the total 96 enrolled children, 30 (31.3%) developed RAP during the follow-up period. The majority (27/30, 90%) of the children with AP developed RAP within 6 months of their first AP attack. The presence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) [odds ratio (OR)=6.652, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.989 to 22.247], fasting time (OR=1.267, 95% CI 1.104 to 1.583), whether meet all three AP diagnostic criteria (OR=7.438, 95% CI 1.346 to 41.103) and abnormal amylase/lipase value on the seventh day of hospitalization (OR=3.601, 95% CI 0.972 to 13.342) were independent risk factors of RAP in children.Conclusions Most children who developed RAP had progressed within 6 months after their first episode of AP. RAP was more common in children who met all three AP diagnostic criteria at initial attack and in children with SIRS, long fasting time and abnormal amylase/lipase value on the seventh day of hospitalization.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the main causes of childhood blindness. However, insufficient ophthalmologists are qualified for ROP screening. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the performance of a deep neural network (DNN) for the automated screening of ROP. The training and test sets came from 420 365 wide-angle retina images from ROP screening. A transfer learning scheme was designed to train the DNN classifier. First, a pre-processing classifier separated unqualified images. Then, pediatric ophthalmologists labeled each image as either ROP or negative. The labeled training set (8090 positive images and 9711 negative ones) was used to fine-tune three candidate DNN classifiers (AlexNet, VGG-16, and GoogLeNet) with the transfer learning approach. The resultant classifiers were evaluated on a test dataset of 1742 samples and compared with five independent pediatric retinal ophthalmologists. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, ROC area under the curve, and precision-recall (P-R) curve on the test dataset were analyzed. Accuracy, precision, sensitivity (recall), specificity, F1 score, the Youden index, and the Matthews correlation coefficient were evaluated at different sensitivity cutoffs. The data from the five pediatric ophthalmologists were plotted in the ROC and P-R curves to visualize their performances. VGG-16 achieved the best performance. At the cutoff point that maximized F1 score in the P-R curve, the final DNN model achieved 98.8% accuracy, 94.1% sensitivity, 99.3% specificity, and 93.0% precision. This was comparable to the pediatric ophthalmologists (98.8% accuracy, 93.5% sensitivity, 99.5% specificity, and 96.7% precision). In the screening of ROP using the evaluation of wide-angle retinal images, DNNs had high accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and precision, comparable to that of pediatric ophthalmologists.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has been one of the worldwide causes of blindness among children. Grading and treatment guidelines of ROP are mainly based on zone, stage, and plus disease. For serious ROP, identifying zone is more important than staging. However, identifying zone I from RetCam fundus images is not accurate and subjective by ophthalmologists. To address it, we develop a new deep learning framework to automatically identify zone I from RetCam images. Specifically, we train a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) algorithm based on the RetCam images. The disc and macular center in terms of the threshold of intersection over union (IOU) were identified automatically. The algorithm is validated on fundus images and results show that zone I identification accuracy of 91% is achieved when the IOU threshold is 0.8. The obtained promising identification accuracy of zone I from the RetCam images indicates the potential applications in ROP grading, monitoring, and prognosis for infants.

Recent years, there has been an ever increasing interest and investment on Artificial Intelligence (AI), both academic and industrial. As the hotspots in AI, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have already been applied to a lot of different applications. However, traditional ANNs have disadvantages, such as fixed and redundant structure, resulting in requirement of large amount of training data and training time. Biological researches have shown that the biological neural network behaves in a more flexible way, with synapses building or withering according to requirement. In this paper, we present a Correlation Analysis Based Neural Network Self-Organizing Genetic Evolutionary Algorithm. Based on correlation analysis of training process, self-organizing combined with genetic evolutionary algorithm is applied to improve the performance efficiency and structural efficiency of the built neural network. Results show that our algorithm could generate neural networks with more compact structure and reasonable classification accuracy.

Direct seeding (DS) of rice gained much attention due to labor scarcity and unavailability of water. However, reduced emergence and poor seedling establishment are the main problems of DS which causes significant yield losses. Herein, DS-associated seedling traits of three major rice groups, i.e., Indica (Ind), Japonica (Jap), and aus-type (Aus), were evaluated by using an improved mesocotyl elongation assay. The associations among different traits at the seedling and maturity stage were also studied. Significant variation was observed among the cultivars of different rice groups. The Aus group cultivars showed higher mean values for coleoptile (C, 3.85 cm), mesocotyl (MC, 4.17 cm), shoot length (SL, 13.64 cm), panicle length (PL, 23.44 cm), tillers number (T, 15.95), culm length (CL, 105.29 cm), and plant height (PH, 128.73 cm), while the Indica and Japonica groups showed higher mean values of grain length (GL, 8.69 mm), grain length/width ratio (GL/WR, 3.07), and grain width (GW, 3.31 mm), with 1000 grain weight (TGWt, 25.53 g), respectively. Pairwise correlation analysis showed that MC, C, and SL were positively correlated among themselves and with PL, CL, and PH. Moreover, based on principal component analysis (PCA), C, MC, SL, CL, and PH were identified as the major discriminative factors in the rice cultivars. This study describes the development of desired DS rice variety with long MC and semidwarf in height and suggests that Aus group cultivars can be used as the donor parents of favorable DS-associated traits in rice breeding programs.

Abstract Leaves are the primary food‐producing organs for a plant that carry out photosynthesis and contribute to biomass and grain yield. Leaf senescence is a developmentally regulated physiological process but early leaf senescence is known to negatively affect plant yield. The cuticle is an outer waxy protective layer on the leaf surface which protects plants from pathogens attack as well as dehydration. Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cuticle development and leaf senescence is still immature. The present study reports the role of the DEGENERATED PANICLE AND PARTIAL STERILITY 1 (DPS1) gene encoding a cystathionine β‐synthase (CBS) domain‐containing protein in cuticle development and leaf senescence in rice. The dps1 loss‐of‐function mutant showed leaf senescence phenotype with twisted leaves, significantly reduced chlorophyll content and degenerated chloroplasts characterized by a reduced number of starch granules and an abundance of osmiophilic bodies. Furthermore, dps1 leaves displayed defective cuticle development, reduced wax and cutin compounds, and lower relative water content as compared with wild type. Physiological assays showed significantly higher accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accompanied by enhanced DNA fragmentation in dps1 leaves, which could be associated with chloroplast degeneration and defective cuticle development. Transcriptome analysis revealed altered expression of several critical genes related to photosynthesis and wax/cutin pathway. This study revealed a crucial role of DPS1 in regulating leaf cuticle development and senescence by affecting the expression of several genes. Thus, a moderate expression of DPS1 is necessary for better plant growth and productivity.

Purpose. To investigate the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) as a prognostic factor for the visual efficacy of antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment in diabetic macular edema (DME). Methods. We retrospectively reviewed 92 DME eyes receiving anti-VEGF treatment, which were stratified as responders (≥5 letters gained) and nonresponders (5 letters in visual acuity after anti-VEGF treatment. CVI may serve as a novel biomarker for visual response to anti-VEGF treatment in DME.

Our previous work reported a novel lattice structure composed of modified face-centered cubic (modified FCC) cells with crossing rods introduced at the center of each cell. In this work, the proposed modified FCC lattice is further investigated to ascertain its compression behaviors under different loading rates. For this purpose, numerical simulations were carried out for compressing the two-dimensional and three-dimensional modified FCC lattice structures with different loading rates, and to compare their deformation modes and energy absorption capacity under different loading rates. In addition, lattice specimens were fabricated using selective laser melting technology and quasi-static compression experiments were performed to validate the finite element simulations. The results indicate that the proposed modified FCC lattices exhibit better load-bearing capacity and energy absorption than the traditional FCC lattices under different loading rates. Under high-speed loading, the modified FCC structure is less susceptible to buckling, and the length ratio of the central cross-rod corresponding to maximum energy absorption capacity is larger.

Piezoelectrets, a new type of electromechanical transducer material with low acoustic impedance and high piezoelectric d33 and g33 coefficients, are promising candidates for developing high-performance air-coupled ultrasonic transducers. In this work, we design polypropylene-piezoelectret-film based air-coupled transducers (ACTs) with two different structures and investigate the influence of boundary conditions of the film with experimental measurement, electromechanical equivalent circuit modeling (EECM), and finite element analysis (FEA) for both inverse and direct piezoelectric effects. The experimental data are in great agreement with the results of EECM and FEA. The resonant frequency of the ACT with a free-front-clamped-back (FFCB) film is about half of that of the device with a free-front-free-back (FFFB) film, the response peak of the FFCB device is higher than that of the FFFB device, and the −3dB bandwidth of the former is much narrower than that of the latter. The results show that the experimental measurements can be predicted by EECM and FEA, which can provide the basis for the development of high-performance air-coupled ultrasonic transducers based on piezoelectret films.

BackgroundPrenatal depression is associated with adverse maternal and fetal health consequences, yet it has not raised sufficient concerns in China. Psychological worries and stress may lead to prenatal depression, but resilience could relieve some of the negative effects of worries and stress and mitigate prenatal depression.AimsThis study aimed to assess the prevalence of prenatal depression and explore its associated factors.MethodA multisite cross-sectional study was conducted that included 605 pregnant women from three hospitals in two provincial capitals (Shenyang and Zhengzhou) and one municipality (Chongqing). A smartphone questionnaire was employed to assess prenatal depression using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to explore factors associated with prenatal depression.ResultsThe prevalence of prenatal depression (CES-D≥16) among Chinese pregnant women was 28.4%. Logistic regression analyses revealed that prenatal depression was positively associated with worries about appearance (odds ratio [OR] 1.666, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.043–2.661) and perceived stress (OR 1.156, 95% CI 1.104–1.211) and negatively associated with monthly income, relationship with mother (OR 0.287, 95% CI 0.103–0.796), and resilience (OR 0.935, 95% CI 0.918–0.953).ConclusionThese findings revealed that Chinese pregnant women suffered from high levels of prenatal depression (28.4%). Worries about appearance and perceived stress were risk factors for prenatal depression, whereas a pregnant woman’s harmonious relationship with her own mother and resilience could relieve the negative impacts of pregnancy that can lead to prenatal depression. Improving resilience and maintaining harmonious relationships with mothers should be emphasized in order to reduce the detrimental effects of pregnancy and improve the mental well-being of pregnant women.

Abstract Objectives: To construct and compare a 2013 New Zealand population derived from Statistics New Zealand’s Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) with the 2013 census population and a 2013 Health Service Utilisation population, and to ascertain the differences in cardiovascular disease prevalence estimates derived from the three cohorts. Methods: We constructed three national populations through multiple linked administrative data sources in the IDI and compared the three cohorts by age, gender, ethnicity, area‐level deprivation and District Health Board. We also estimated cardiovascular disease prevalence based on hospitalisations using each of the populations as denominators. Results: The IDI population was the largest and most informative cohort. The percentage differences between the IDI and the other two populations were largest for males and for those aged 15–34 years. The percentage differences between the IDI and Census cohorts were largest for people living in the most deprived areas. The ethnic distribution varied across the three cohorts. Using the IDI population as a reference, the Health Service Utilisation population generally overestimated cardiovascular disease prevalence, while the Census population generally underestimated it. Conclusions and implications: The New Zealand IDI population is the most comprehensive and appropriate national cohort for use in health and social research.

Abstract Background Little is known about the prevalence and zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in deer in China. In this study, 662 fecal samples were collected from 11 farms in Henan and Jilin Provinces between July 2013 and August 2014, and were screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium and G. duodenalis with genotyping and subtyping methods. Results Cryptosporidium spp. and G. duodenalis were detected in 6.80% (45/662) and 1.21% (5/662) of samples, respectively. Six Cryptosporidium species/genotypes were identified based on the small subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (SSU rRNA) gene: C. parvum (n = 11); C. andersoni (n = 5); C. ubiquitum (n = 3); C. muris (n = 1); C. suis-like (n = 1); and Cryptosporidium deer genotype (n = 24). When five of the 11 C. parvum isolates were subtyped by sequencing the 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene, zoonotic subtypes IIaA15G2R2 (n = 4) and IIdA19G1 (n = 1) were found. According to a subtype analysis, three C. ubiquitum isolates belonged to XIIa subtype 2. In contrast, only assemblage E was detected in the five Giardia-positive samples with small subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (SSU rRNA) gene sequencing. Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the first study to report C. andersoni, as well as C. parvum zoonotic subtypes IIaA15G2R2 and IIdA19G1 in cervids. These data, though limited, suggest that cervids may be a source of zoonotic Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Cervids in the present study are likely to be of low zoonotic potential to humans, and more molecular epidemiological studies are required to clarify the prevalence and public health significance of Cryptosporidium and G. duodenalis in cervids throughout China.

Development of effective pathogen detection systems is critical for human health. In this study, a micro-gapped interdigitated electrode array-based immunosensor chip is constructed for the detection of a typical pathogen, Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7. The immunosesnor chip was prepared via photolithography and characterized by a digital camera, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The E. coli O157:H7 detection mechanism is based on an enzyme-linked, sandwiched immunoassay with enzymatic silver deposition. Our results revealed that the proposed immunosensor chip showed selective electrical response towards E. coli O157:H7 over other bacteria including Hemolytic streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Chronobacter sakazakii and Bacillus cereus. Our assay exhibited potential practical applications for E. coli O157:H7 determination in water and our methodology might be applied to detect different pathogens by simply selecting specific antibodies.

Understanding the performance of resonators introduced in elastic and/or acoustic circuits is important for conceiving complex and efficient guiding structures. In this work, we reported upon the experimental characterization of hollow pillars in different waveguides with 90° corners by measuring the displacement on top of hollow pillars. The air-coupled method, laser ultrasonic technique and the newly developed method based on polypropylene (PP) piezoelectret film have been adopted during this process. In such way, we experimentally show the quadrupolar resonance of hollow pillars that corresponds well to the whispering-gallery modes in numerical results in several types of waveguides for guiding Lamb wave.

Development of computer science has led to the blooming of artificial intelligence (AI), and neural networks are the core of AI research. Although mainstream neural networks have done well in the fields of image processing and speech recognition, they do not perform well in models aimed at understanding contextual information. In our opinion, the reason for this is that the essence of building a neural network through parameter training is to fit the data to the statistical law through parameter training. Since the neural network built using this approach does not possess memory ability, it cannot reflect the relationship between data with respect to the causality. Biological memory is fundamentally different from the current mainstream digital memory in terms of the storage method. The information stored in digital memory is converted to binary code and written in separate storage units. This physical isolation destroys the correlation of information. Therefore, the information stored in digital memory does not have the recall or association functions of biological memory which can present causality. In this paper, we present the results of our preliminary effort at constructing an associative memory system based on a spiking neural network. We broke the neural network building process into two phases: the Structure Formation Phase and the Parameter Training Phase. The Structure Formation Phase applies a learning method based on Hebb's rule to provoke neurons in the memory layer growing new synapses to connect to neighbor neurons as a response to the specific input spiking sequences fed to the neural network. The aim of this phase is to train the neural network to memorize the specific input spiking sequences. During the Parameter Training Phase, STDP and reinforcement learning are employed to optimize the weight of synapses and thus to find a way to let the neural network recall the memorized specific input spiking sequences. The results show that our memory neural network could memorize different targets and could recall the images it had memorized.

It is evident through biology research that, biological neural network could be implemented through two means: by congenital heredity, or by posteriority learning. However, traditionally, artificial neural network, especially the Deep learning Neural Networks (DNNs) are implemented only through exhaustive training and learning. Fixed structure is built, and then parameters are trained through huge amount of data. In this way, there are a lot of redundancies in the implemented artificial neural network. This redundancy not only requires more effort to train the network, but also costs more computing resources when used. In this paper, we proposed a bionic way to implement artificial neural network through construction rather than training and learning. The hierarchy of the neural network is designed according to analysis of the required functionality, and then module design is carried out to form each hierarchy. We choose the Drosophila's visual neural network as a test case to verify our method's validation. The results show that the bionic artificial neural network built through our method could work as a bionic compound eye, which can achieve the detection of the object and their movement, and the results are better on some properties, compared with the Drosophila's biological compound eyes.
