Recently, orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been adopted to measure the shape of static objects and the translation motion of moving objects in optical remote sensing. Most of these studies rely on measuring the intensity variation of OAM beams. However, the OAM intensity does not change with the rotation of the spinning object, but its phase changes. The phase variation is proved to be proportional to the object’s angular velocity. Since a rotating object will cause the OAM phase dependent on time, the OAM phase needs to be measured instantaneously, to support the OAM-based angular velocity measurement. In this work, we report a scheme to measure the angular velocity of a spinning object using a photonic OAM phase spectrum. A phase-to-intensity strategy is implemented to enable the real-time multi-OAM phase measurement, in which the phase can be determined with the intensities of four focal spots in a two-dimensional array generated by a phase-only spatial light modulator. The experimental results show that the average error of the measured angular velocity could be under 2.45% by detecting the phase of two OAM modes. This OAM-based angular velocity detection method provides a complementary approach to characterize the rotational Doppler effect, especially for slow angular motion.

The spin-orbit interaction of light is a fundamental manifestation of controlling its angular momenta with numerous applications in photonic spin Hall effects and chiral quantum optics. However, observation of an optical spin Hall effect, which is normally very weak with subwavelength displacements, needs quantum weak measurements or sophisticated metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the spin-orbit interaction of light in the form of strong chiroptical responses by breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of a dielectric substrate. The chiroptical signal is observed at the boundary of a microdisk illuminated by circularly polarized vortex beams at normal incidence. The generated chiroptical spectra are tunable for different photonic orbital angular momenta and microdisk diameters. Our findings, correlating photonic spin-orbit interaction with chiroptical responses, may provide a route for exploiting optical information processing, enantioselective sensing, and chiral metrology.

Separation of plasma which is full of various biomarkers is critical for clinical diagnosis. However, the point-of-care plasma separation often relies on microfluidic filtration membranes which are usually limited in purity, yield, hemolysis, extraction speed, hematocrit level, and protein recovery. Here, we have developed a high-performance plasma membrane separation technique based on a Janus membrane and red blood cell (RBC) agglutination reaction. The RBC agglutination reaction can form larger RBC aggregates to separate plasma from blood cells. Then, the Janus membrane, serving as a multipore microfilter to block large RBC aggregates, allows the plasma to flow from the hydrophobic side to its hydrophilic side spontaneously. As a result, the separation technique can extract highly-purified plasma (99.99%) from whole blood with an ultra-high plasma yield (∼80%) in ∼80 s. Additionally, the separation technique is independent of the hematocrit level and can avoid hemolysis.

Advanced control over the excitation of ultraconfined polaritons—hybrid light and matter waves—empowers unique opportunities for many nanophotonic functionalities, e.g., on-chip circuits, quantum information processing, and controlling thermal radiation. Recent work has shown that highly asymmetric polaritons are directly governed by asymmetries in crystal structures. Here, we experimentally demonstrate extremely asymmetric and unidirectional phonon polariton (PhP) excitation via directly patterning high-symmetry orthorhombic van der Waals (vdW) crystal α-MoO 3 . This phenomenon results from symmetry breaking of momentum matching in polaritonic diffraction in vdW materials. We show that the propagation of PhPs can be versatile and robustly tailored via structural engineering, while PhPs in low-symmetry (e.g., monoclinic and triclinic) crystals are largely restricted by their naturally occurring permittivities. Our work synergizes grating diffraction phenomena with the extreme anisotropy of high-symmetry vdW materials, enabling unexpected control of infrared polaritons along different pathways and opening opportunities for applications ranging from on-chip photonics to directional heat dissipation.

Optical activity, demonstrating the chiral light-matter interaction, has attracted tremendous attention in both fundamental theoretical research and advanced applications of high-efficiency enantioselective sensing and next-generation chiroptical spectroscopic techniques. However, conventional chiroptical responses are normally limited in large assemblies of chiral materials by circularly polarized light, exhibiting extremely weak chiroptical signals in a single chiral nanostructure. Here, we demonstrate that an alternative chiral freedom of light-orbital angular momentum-can be utilized for generating strong helical dichroism in single chiral nanostructures. The helical dichroism by monochromatic vortex beams can unambiguously distinguish the intrinsic chirality of nanostructures, in an excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The single planar-chiral nanostructure can exhibit giant helical dichroism of ∼20% at the visible wavelength. The vortex-dependent helical dichroism, expanding to single nanostructures and two-dimensional space, has implications for high-efficiency chiroptical detection of planar-chiral nanostructures in chiral optics and nanophotonic systems.

Tool deterioration is a common issue in Numerical Control (NC) machining, which directly affects part quality, production efficiency and manufacturing cost. Due to the complexity of machining, multiple deterioration forms of tool are involved during the tool deterioration process, which imposes a significant challenge for tool condition prediction because of the coupling effects among different deterioration forms. In order to address this issue, an accurate prediction method of multiple deterioration forms of tool based on multitask learning with low rank tensor constraint is proposed in this paper. A base model for prediction of each deterioration form is firstly constructed by using neural network, and then a 3-order tensor is constructed by stacking the weight matrices of the hidden layers of the base neural networks. The hidden relationship among the multiple related tasks is expected to be learned by means of a mathematical approach, i.e., constraining the 3-order tensor with low rank, which is realized by joint training the base prediction models. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the prediction error by about 13 % for wear and 25 % for chipping respectively compared with the corresponding single task models.

Plasmons, as emerging optical diffraction-unlimited information carriers, promise the high-capacity, high-speed, and integrated photonic chips. The on-chip precise manipulations of plasmon in an arbitrary platform, whether two-dimensional (2D) or one-dimensional (1D), appears demanding but non-trivial. Here, we proposed a meta-wall, consisting of specifically designed meta-atoms, that allows the high-efficiency transformation of propagating plasmon polaritons from 2D platforms to 1D plasmonic waveguides, forming the trans-dimensional plasmonic routers. The mechanism to compensate the momentum transformation in the router can be traced via a local dynamic phase gradient of the meta-atom and reciprocal lattice vector. To demonstrate such a scheme, a directional router based on phase-gradient meta-wall is designed to couple 2D SPP to a 1D plasmonic waveguide, while a unidirectional router based on grating metawall is designed to route 2D SPP to the arbitrarily desired direction along the 1D plasmonic waveguide by changing the incident angle of 2D SPP. The on-chip routers of trans-dimensional SPP demonstrated here provide a flexible tool to manipulate propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and may pave the way for designing integrated plasmonic network and devices.

Personal moisture and thermal management fabrics that can facilitate sweat removal and regulating skin temperature are highly desired for improving human comfort and performance. Here, we demonstrate a hydrophobic/superhydrophilic Janus cotton-fabric through femtosecond-laser-induced hydrophilization. The engineering Janus cotton-fabric can unidirectionally transport human sweat spontaneously. More importantly, the Janus fabrics can maintain human body temperature 2-3 °C lower than the conventional cotton fabrics, implying the cooling effect in thermal environment. In addition, the Janus fabric has lower wet skin adhesion in comparison with a conventional hydrophilic cotton fabric. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of a Janus fabric is comparable to the traditional hydrophilic cotton fabrics. Overall, the successful creation of the Janus fabrics provides new insights for the development of moisture-wicking/thermal-management fabrics for satisfying the growing demand of personal comfort.

Rapid progress in miniaturizing vortex devices is driven by their integration with optical sensing, micromanipulation, and optical communications in both classical and quantum realms. Many such efforts are usually associated with on-chip micro- or nanoscale structures in real space and possess a static orbital angular momentum. Recently, a new branch of singular optics has emerged that seeks phase singularities in multiple dimensions, realizing vortex beams with compact nanodevices. Here, we review the topological phase singularities in real space, momentum space, and the spatiotemporal domain for generating vortex beams; discuss recent developments in theoretical and experimental research for generation, detection, and transmission of vortex beams; and provide an outlook for future opportunities in this area, ranging from fundamental research to practical applications.

Three-dimensional helical microstructures are abundant in nature and can be applied as chiral metamaterials for advanced nanophotonics. Here we report a flexible method to fabricate double-helical microstructures with single exposure by recording the chirality of incident optical vortices. Two coaxial optical vortices can interfere to generate a helical optical field, confirmed by the numerical simulation. The diameters of double-helical microstructures can be tailored by the magnitude of topological charges. This fast manufacturing strategy provides the opportunity to efficiently yield helical microstructures. Finally, the chirality of double-helical microstructures can be reversibly read by optical vortices, demonstrating a strong chiroptical response.

An independent counter-expert assessment of the ex-ante socioeconomic evaluation is conducted for the largest projects. A permanent committee of experts has been established to specify the methodological rules for socioeconomic evaluation and define the studies and research necessary.

Nanophotonic platforms such as metasurfaces, achieving arbitrary phase profiles within ultrathin thickness, emerge as miniaturized, ultracompact and kaleidoscopic optical vortex generators. However, it is often required to segment or interleave independent sub-array metasurfaces to multiplex optical vortices in a single nano-device, which in turn affects the device’s compactness and channel capacity. Here, inspired by phyllotaxis patterns in pine cones and sunflowers, we theoretically prove and experimentally report that multiple optical vortices can be produced in a single compact phyllotaxis nanosieve, both in free space and on a chip, where one meta-atom may contribute to many vortices simultaneously. The time-resolved dynamics of on-chip interference wavefronts between multiple plasmonic vortices was revealed by ultrafast time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy. Our nature-inspired optical vortex generator would facilitate various vortex-related optical applications, including structured wavefront shaping, free-space and plasmonic vortices, and high-capacity information metaphotonics.

Spin angular momentum of light is vital to investigate enantiomers characterized by circular dichroism (CD), widely adopted in biology, chemistry, and material science. However, to discriminate chiral materials with multiscale features, CD spectroscopy normally requires wavelength-swept laser sources as well as wavelength-specific optical accessories. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an orbital-angular-momentum-assisted approach to yield chiroptical signals with monochromatic light. The gigantic vortical differential scattering (VDS) of ∼120% is achieved on intrinsically chiral microstructures fabricated by femtosecond laser. The VDS measurements can robustly generate chiroptical properties on microstructures with varying geometric features (e.g., diameters and helical pitches) and detect chiral molecules with high sensitivity. This VDS scheme lays a paradigm-shift pavement toward efficiently chiroptical discrimination of multiscale chiral structures with photonic orbital angular momentum. It simplifies and complements the conventional CD spectroscopy, opening possibilities for measuring weak optical chirality, especially on mesoscale chiral architectures and macromolecules.

Chirality arises universally across many different fields. Recent advancements in artificial nanomaterials have demonstrated chiroptical responses that far exceed those found in natural materials. Chiroptical phenomena are complicated processes that involve transitions between states with opposite parities, and solid interpretations of these observations are yet to be clearly provided. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of the theoretical aspects of chirality in light, nanostructures, and nanosystems and their chiroptical interactions. Descriptions of observed chiroptical phenomena based on these fundamentals are intensively discussed. We start with the strong intrinsic and extrinsic chirality in plasmonic nanoparticle systems, followed by enantioselective sensing and optical manipulation, and then conclude with orbital angular momentum-dependent responses. This review will be helpful for understanding the mechanisms behind chiroptical phenomena based on underlying chiral properties and useful for interpreting chiroptical systems for further studies., Towards an extended understanding of chiroptical phenomena Strengthening the theoretical understanding of chirality is necessary for developing applications based on its phenomena. Junsuk Rho of Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) reviewed with colleagues the theoretical aspects of chirality, a symmetry property that describes mirror-image objects or systems that cannot be superimposed. Chiral materials have attracted much attention due to their interesting interactions. Scientists are familiar with how geometrically chiral objects and systems interact with light. However, such ‘chiroptical effects’ can also be found in achiral systems, Rho and his colleagues explain. Also, globally achiral light can be locally chiral near nanostructures. Scientists need to extend their concepts and theoretical understandings of chiroptical systems in order to be able to further develop applications based on their phenomena, such as in metamaterials, sensing, spintronics and stereochemistry.

Abstract The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has promising applications, ranging from information multiplexing and high-speed optical communication to computation. Dynamically tunable and switchable vortex microlasers combined with direct photocurrent detection of the topological charges of OAM states have paved unexplored routes for the development and integration of fourth-generation (4.0) vortex technology, potentially on chip.

Artificial bioinspired surfaces are attracting increasing attention because of their fascinating characteristics, such as the structural color of a butterfly wing and the anisotropic wetting of a rice leaf. However, realization of the multicolor biomimetic metal surfaces with controlled anisotropy by using a simple, inexpensive and efficient method remains a challenge. Herein, we propose a focused laser interference lithography processing method, which has sufficient energy density and high processing efficiency to directly fabricate the groove structures on the metal surface. The surface is multicolor due to the diffraction grating effect of the regular groove structures, and exhibits anisotropic wetting due to its single-direction morphology. The influence of the observation angle on the diversity of colors and the anisotropic wetting under different heights and periods of grooves have been quantitatively investigated. A variety of patterns (e.g., leaf, crab, windmill, letter and so on) can be processed on various metals (e.g., stainless steel, Ti, Ni, Cu, Fe, Zn and so on) by this focused laser interference lithography because of its excellent flexibility and wide range of suitable materials. This multi-functional metal surface has broad applications in identification code, decorative beautification, anti-counterfeiting, information storage, bionic application design and so on.

Artificial microstructures composed of chiral building blocks are of great significance in the fields of optics and mechanics. Here, it is shown that highly ordered chiral structures can be spontaneously assembled by a meniscus-directed capillary force arising in an evaporating liquid. The chirality is facilitated by rationally breaking the intrinsic symmetry in the unit cells through cooperative control of the geometry and spatial topology of the micropillars. The interfacial dynamics of the assembly process are studied to show that the sequential self-organization of the micropillars is influenced by the geometries, stiffness, and spatial arrangements. A diversity of chiral assemblies with controlled handedness is yielded by varying the pillar number, height, cross-section, laser power, and spatial topology. Lastly, the differential reflectance of light carrying opposite orbital angular momentums on the assembled chiral architectures are investigated, showcasing their potential in the field of chiral photonics concerning enantioselective response and exceptional optical functions.

Capillary-force-driven self-assembly (CFSA) has been combined with many top-down fabrication methods to be alternatives to conventional single micro/nano manufacturing techniques for constructing complicated micro/nanostructures. However, most CFSA structures are fabricated on a rigid substrate, and little attention is paid to the tuning of CFSA, which means that the pattern of structures cannot be regulated once they are manufactured. Here, by combining femtosecond laser direct writing with CFSA, a flexible method is proposed to fabricate self-assembled hierarchical structures on a soft substrate. Then, the tuning of the self-assembly process is realized with a mechanical-stretching strategy. With this method, different patterns of tunable self-assembled structures are obtained before tuning and after release, which is difficult to achieve with other techniques. In addition, as a proof-of-concept application, this mechanical tunable self-assembly of microstructures on a soft substrate is used for smart displays and versatile micro-object trapping.

Microarray technology provides an excellent platform for biomedical and biochemical research including basic scientific studies, drug discovery, and diagnostics. Here, we develop a novel method referred to as real-time two-photon lithography in a controlled flow in which femtosecond laser two-photon lithography is performed in situ in the sequential mode stopping and flowing the flow of liquid resin containing microparticles to achieve 100% trapping on a one-bead-to-one-trap basis. Polydisperse particles can be all trapped to form a desired array by freely designing trap structures, resulting in an unprecedentedly high capture efficiency of ∼100%. No persistent pressure is needed after trapping which reduces the complexity of the system. In addition, trapping of particle-cluster arrays with a controlled number of particles is also achieved via this method. The trapped particles inside the microchip are successfully applied as microlenses for high quality imaging. The present technology marks an essential step towards a versatile platform for the integration of bead-based assays and paves the way for developing innovative microfluidics, optofluidics, micro-optics and single-cell analysis devices.

Vector vortex beams (VVBs) possess ubiquitous applications from particle trapping to quantum information. Recently, the bulky optical devices for generating VVBs have been miniaturized by using metasurfaces. Nevertheless, it is quite challenging for the metasurface-generated VVBs to possess arbitrary polarization and phase distributions. More critical is that the VVBs' annular intensity profiles demonstrated hitherto are dependent on topological charges and are hence not perfect, posing difficulties in spatially shared co-propagation of multiple vortex beams. Here, a single-layer metasurface to address all those aforementioned challenges in one go is proposed, which consists of two identical crystal-silicon nanoblocks with varying positions and rotation angles (i.e., four geometric parameters throughout). Those four geometric parameters are found to be adequate for independent and arbitrary control of the amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. Perfect VVBs with arbitrary polarization and phase distributions are successfully generated, and the constant intensity profiles independent of their topological charges and polarization orders are demonstrated. The proposed strategy casts a distinct perception that a minimalist design of just one single-layer metasurface can empower such robust and versatile control of VVBs. That provides promising opportunities for generating more complex vortex field for advanced applications in structural light, optical micromanipulation, and data communication.

In analogy to Lifshitz transitions in electronic systems, topological transitions have recently attracted widespread attention in photonic metamaterials, metasurfaces, and two-dimensional materials, enabling exotic regimes for light-matter interactions. Here, we discuss and study enhanced photonic local density of states in twisted hyperbolic bilayers, enabled by topological transitions emerging at specific twist angles. Our results enhance the understanding of nanoscale light-matter interactions in stacked optical materials as they are rotated with respect to each other in the context of twistronics and suggest emerging applications of these concepts for photonics, including for the manipulation of radiative heat transfer and the control and harvesting of light at the nanoscale.

Single crystal perovskite materials with the intriguing properties of wide optical absorption range, low trap density, photoluminescence, and superior charge-transfer have emerged as a new class of revolutionary photovoltaic semiconductors promising for various applications. A technique to realize microstructures or microdevices on the surface of single crystal can facilitate the incorporation of these materials into optoelectronic applications. Here, we first reported the fabrication of 1-D mciropores, microlines, and 2-D micropatterns such as word “USTC,” number “2016” and “Olympic rings” on the surface of CH3NH3PbI3 single crystal by femtosecond laser ablating. The effect of parameters such as exposure time, laser peak intensity, and scanning speed was quantitatively investigated to determine the parameter intervals capable of ensuring the required resolution. By fabricating periodic grating microstructures, the perovskite surfaces showed bright iridescence from dark blue to red due to the grating diffraction effect. Moreover, it is found that the fluorescence peak strength of processed area obviously grows with laser peak intensity and scanning speed, which is attributed to the increasing surface roughness caused by higher laser peak intensity and slower scanning speed. These works are beneficial for researchers to better understand the intrinsic property of single crystal perovskite and accelerate perovskite-based optoelectronics applications.

Manipulating Airy beams to symmetric Airy beams (SABs) with abruptly autofocusing and self-accelerating properties has attracted much attention. With such a particular propagation dynamic, SABs may provide great potential in dynamic signal imaging. On the other hand, the generation of SABs by spatial light modulators suffers from the limitations of phase gradient accuracy, low optical efficiency ( < 40 % ), and a bulky footprint. Therefore, exploring imaging applications and optimal generation methods of these Airy-type beams deserves further research. Here, based on the coordinate transformation of SAB, an asymmetric Airy beam (AAB) is realized. Symmetric/asymmetric cubic phase microplates (SCPPs/ACPPs) are designed and fabricated for generating SAB/AAB. The SCPP/ACPP demonstrates superior performance: compact construction ( 60 μm × 60 μm × 1.1 μm ), continuous variation of phase, high efficiency ( ∼ 81 % at 532 nm), and broadband operation from 405 to 780 nm. Dynamic imaging under monochromatic and polychromatic lights is realized by the SAB/AAB, indicating various results at different propagation distances with a certain initial signal. Further investigation reveals that the SCPP on a soft substrate maintains its physical dimensions and optical properties unchanged during stretching. Our work enables wide potential applications in integrated optics, beam manipulation, and imaging.

This article presents a new method for fabricating complex cross-sectional microtubes with a high aspect ratio at micro/nanoscale. The microtubes are directly written in a photoresist using a femtosecond pulsed laser combined with a spatial light modulator (SLM). A new method for generating a C-shaped Bessel beam by modifying the Bessel beams with a SLM is reported for the first time. Using this gap-ring-shaped light field, microtubes with special cross section (trefoil-shaped, clover-shaped, spiral, etc.) have been first achieved through two-photo polymerization rapidly. The microtube wall can reach about 800 nm and the diameter of the gap-ring structure is only a few micrometers. As a demonstration, artificial stomata were manufactured with the same size as actual plants stomata consisting of gap-ring microtubes. This artificial stomata can mimic the function of the real stomata with rapid opening and closing, demonstrating its ability to trap and release microparticles regulated by rinse solvent.

In this Letter, we demonstrate the observation of colorful Airy beams and Airy imaging of letters, which we called Airy letters here, generated through the continuous cubic phase microplate (CCPP) elaborately fabricated by femtosecond laser two-photon processing. The fabricated CCPP with both micro size (60 μm×60 μm×1.1 μm) and continuous variation of phase shows a good agreement with the designed CCPP. Chromatic Airy beams and Airy letters "USTC" are experimentally generated via the CCPP illuminated by white light. In addition, superior properties of Airy letters are explored, demonstrating that the Airy letters inherit the nondiffraction, self-healing, and transverse acceleration characteristics of Airy beams. Our work paves the way toward integrated optics, light separation, optical imaging, and defective information recovery.

Conventional micropore membranes based size sorting have been widely applied for single-cell analysis. However, only a single filtering size can be achieved and the clogging issue cannot be completely avoided. Here, we propose a novel arch-like microsorter capable of multimodal (high-, band- and low-capture mode) sorting of particles. The target particles can pass through the front filter and are then trapped by the back filter, while the non-target particles can bypass or pass through the microsorter. This 3D arch-like microstructures are fabricated inside a microchannel by femtosecond laser parallel multifocal scanning. The designed architecture allows for particles isolation free of clogging over 20 minutes. Finally, as a proof of concept demonstration, SUM159 breast cancer cells are successfully separated from whole blood.

Transparent microtubes can function as unique cell culture scaffolds, because the tubular 3D microenvironment they provide is very similar to the narrow space of capillaries in vivo. However, how to realize the fabrication of microtube-arrays with variable cross-section dynamically remains challenging. Here, a dynamic holographic processing method for producing high aspect ratio (≈20) microtubes with tunable outside diameter (6–16 µm) and inside diameter (1–10 µm) as yeast culture scaffolds is reported. A ring-structure Bessel beam is modulated from a typical Gaussian-distributed femtosecond laser beam by a spatial light modulator. By combining the axial scanning of the focused beam and the dynamic display of holograms, dimension-controllable microtube arrays (straight, conical, and drum-shape) are rapidly produced by two-photon polymerization. The outside and inside diameters, tube heights, and spatial arrangements are readily tuned by loading different computer-generated holograms and changing the processing parameters. The transparent microtube array as a nontrivial tool for capturing and culturing the budding yeasts reveals the significant effect of tube diameter on budding characteristics. In particular, the conical tube with the inside diameter varying from 5 to 10 µm has remarkable asymmetrical regulation on the growth trend of captured yeasts.

Long microchannels with thin walls, small width, and nanoholes or irregular shaped microgaps, which are similar to capillaries or cancerous vessels, are urgently needed to simulate the physiological activities in human body. However, the fabrication of such channels remains challenging. Here, microchannels with designable holes are manufactured by combining laser printing with line-contact capillary-force assembly. Two microwalls are first printed by femtosecond laser direct-writing, and subsequently driven to collapse into a channel by the capillary force that arises in the evaporation of developer. The channel can remain stable in solvent due to the enhanced Van der Waals' force caused by the line-contact of microwalls. Microchannels with controllable nanoholes and almost arbitrary patterns can be fabricated without any bonding or multistep processes. As-prepared microchannels, with wall thicknesses less than 1 µm, widths less than 3 µm, lengths more than 1 mm, are comparable with human capillaries. In addition, the prepared channels also exhibit the ability to steer the flow of liquid without any external pump.

Rapid integration of high-quality functional devices in microchannels is in highly demand for miniature lab-on-a-chip applications. This paper demonstrates the embellishment of existing microfluidic devices with integrated micropatterns via femtosecond laser MRAF-based holographic patterning (MHP) microfabrication, which proves two-photon polymerization (TPP) based on spatial light modulator (SLM) to be a rapid and powerful technology for chip functionalization. Optimized mixed region amplitude freedom (MRAF) algorithm has been used to generate high-quality shaped focus field. Base on the optimized parameters, a single-exposure approach is developed to fabricate 200 × 200 μm microstructure arrays in less than 240 ms. Moreover, microtraps, QR code and letters are integrated into a microdevice by the advanced method for particles capture and device identification. These results indicate that such a holographic laser embellishment of microfluidic devices is simple, flexible and easy to access, which has great potential in lab-on-a-chip applications of biological culture, chemical analyses and optofluidic devices.

High efficiency fabrication and integration of three-dimension (3D) functional devices in Lab-on-a-chip systems are crucial for microfluidic applications. Here, a spatial light modulator (SLM)-based multifoci parallel femtosecond laser scanning technology was proposed to integrate microstructures inside a given ‘Y’ shape microchannel. The key novelty of our approach lies on rapidly integrating 3D microdevices inside a microchip for the first time, which significantly reduces the fabrication time. The high quality integration of various 2D-3D microstructures was ensured by quantitatively optimizing the experimental conditions including prebaking time, laser power and developing time. To verify the designable and versatile capability of this method for integrating functional 3D microdevices in microchannel, a series of microfilters with adjustable pore sizes from 12.2 μm to 6.7 μm were fabricated to demonstrate selective filtering of the polystyrene (PS) particles and cancer cells with different sizes. The filter can be cleaned by reversing the flow and reused for many times. This technology will advance the fabrication technique of 3D integrated microfluidic and optofluidic chips.
