Abstract

Abstract Objective This study aims to explore the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and vitamin D status to enhance our understanding of how vitamin D status relates to metabolic health and to provide evidence for the early diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) using the TyG index. Methods We conducted a comprehensive search in various databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Biology Medicine disc, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Wanfang Data to gather articles published from the inception of these databases until February 19, 2024. We assessed the quality of included studies using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for case-control studies and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) methodology checklist for cross-sectional studies. Statistical analyses in this study were conducted using conversion methods for non-standard data formats and consolidation techniques for combining multiple groups. The Fisher transformation method was used for correlation coefficients. We used a random-effects model considering the inherent clinical heterogeneity among the studies, and assessed statistical heterogeneity with the Cochrane Q test and I2 statistic, complemented by subgroup analyses and sensitivity analysis. Results Our meta-analysis selected a total of nine studies. The analysis revealed that patients with vitamin D deficiency (VDD group) exhibited a significantly higher TyG index than those without deficiency (no-VDD group), with a mean difference (MD) of 0.16 (95% CI: 0.10 to 0.23, I2 = 93%). This association was particularly pronounced among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), showing an MD of 0.15 (95% CI: 0.05 to 0.26, I2 = 55%). Additionally, a negative correlation was observed between the TyG index and vitamin D levels, with a correlation coefficient (r) of -0.236 (95% CI: -0.310 to -0.159, I2 = 91%). Excluding each study sequentially in the sensitivity analyses did not significantly alter the outcomes. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate a significant association between the TyG index and vitamin D status across diverse populations, including those with T2DM, subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH), and metabolic associated fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Our results reveal a notable disparity in the TyG index between vitamin D deficient and non-deficient groups, suggesting that vitamin D may play a critical role in metabolic health. These findings highlight the need for further research to explore the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications of vitamin D in the context of various metabolic disorders.

Abstract

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract

Pitch-based carbon fiber, as one of the important engineering materials, has been widely used in aerospace, defense, sports, and other fields. In the long production process of pitch-based carbon fiber, the property of pitch precursor is significant for the mechanical performance of obtained carbon fiber. Thus, it is crucial to improve the property of pitch precursor by efficient means. Halogenation–dehalogenation is a newly developed method for the controllable synthesis of a pitch precursor from the molecular dimension, including fluorination–defluorination, chlorination–dechlorination, and bromination–debromination. This work reviewed the mechanism and application, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each halogenation–dehalogenation method.

Abstract

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Abstract

Blockade of the programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) interaction is currently the focus in the field of cancer immunotherapy, and so far, several monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have achieved encouraging outcomes in cancer treatment. Despite this achievement, mAbs-based therapies are struggling with limitations including poor tissue and tumor penetration, long half-life time, poor oral bioavailability, and expensive production costs, which prompted a shift towards the development of the small-molecule inhibitors of PD-1/PD-L1 pathways. Even though many small-molecule inhibitors targeting PD-1/PD-L1 interaction have been reported, their development lags behind the corresponding mAb, partly due to the challenges of developing drug-like small molecules. Herein, we report the discovery of a series of novel inhibitors targeting PD-1/PD-L1 interaction via structural simplification strategy by using BMS-1058 as a starting point. Among them, compound A9 stands out as the most promising candidate with excellent PD-L1 inhibitory activity (IC50 = 0.93 nM, LE = 0.43) and high binding affinity to hPD-L1 (KD = 3.64 nM, LE = 0.40). Furthermore, A9 can significantly promote the production of IFN-γ in a dose-dependent manner by rescuing PD-L1 mediated T-cell inhibition in Hep3B/OS-8/hPD-L1 and CD3-positive T cells co-culture assay. Taken together, these results suggest that A9 is a promising inhibitor of PD-1/PD-L1 interaction and is worthy for further study.

Abstract

In this work, isotropic pitch precursors are synthesized by the bromination-debromination method with ethylene bottom oil (EO) as the raw material and bromine as the initiator for pitch formation and condensation reactions. The aggregation structure, molecular weight distribution, and molecular structure of isotropic pitch precursors are characterized by thermal mechanical analyzer (TMA), MALDI TOF-MS, and 13C NMR, respectively, for revealing the mechanism of synthesis of isotropic pitch precursors. The results show that at low bromine concentrations, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were mainly ordered in cross-linked structures by bromination-debromination through substitution reactions of side chains. The condensed reactivity can be improved by the effect of bromine, meaning that condensation reaction was aggravated by the method of bromination-dehydrobromination. In the presence of excess bromine, the cross-linked stereo structure of PAHs changed to the planar structure of condensed PAHs, which was not conducive to the subsequent spinning and preparation of carbon fibers.

Abstract

Pure, highly chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), with a 63 wt % of chlorine, showed a unique-thermal-pyrolytic-phenomenon that meant it could be converted to carbon material through solid-phase carbonisation rather than liquid-phase carbonisation. The CPVC began to decompose at 270 °C, with a rapid loss in mass due to dehydrochlorination and novel aromatisation and polycondensation up to 400 °C. In this study, we attempted to prepare carbon fibre (CF) without oxidative stabilisation, using the aforementioned CPVC as a novel precursor. Through the processes of solution spinning and solid-state carbonisation, the spun CPVC fibre was directly converted to CF, with a carbonisation yield of 26.2 wt %. The CPVC-derived CF exhibited a relatively smooth surface; however, it still demonstrated a low mechanical performance. This was because the spun fibre was not stretched during the heat treatment. Tensile strength, Young’s modulus and elongation values of 590 ± 84 MPa, 50 ± 8 GPa, and 1.2 ± 0.2%, respectively, were obtained from the CPVC spun fibre, with an average diameter of 19.4 μm, following carbonisation at 1600 °C for 5 min.

Abstract

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are highly promising because they can scavenge energy from their working environment to sustainably power wearable/mobile electronics. In this work, we propose a novel and straightforward strategy for six-axis force detection and object controlling by using a self-powered sensor based on TENG. The self-powered sensor can be used in diversified tactile sensing and energy saving applications, which has been demonstrated to be able to detect normal force in the range of 0–18 N. Using the vector properties of external force, six-axis directions in three-dimensional (3D) space is detected. Additionally, it is fabricated with environmental friendly materials, i.e., galinstan and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), promoting its applications in more diversified situations. Because of the available and high output voltage as well as the low internal impedance, the self-powered sensor is readily compatible with commercial signal processing and management circuits. The device presented in this work shows robust structure and stable output performance, enabling itself as an ideal human machine interface in self-powered, batteryless, and electric energy saving applications.

Abstract

When entrained-flow gasification technology is applied on a large scale, the release of hazardous trace elements (HTEs) from the use of coal in gasification poses a potential threat to environmental and human health. An adsorption method combining granular activated carbon (GAC) and zeolite as adsorbents to remove the HTEs is proposed. A pilot-scale experiment proved that this method can effectively remove HTEs, especially, the removal rate for mercury and beryllium achieved 99%. Additionally, adsorption studies using GACs were conducted through laboratory batch experiments employing several kinetic and isotherm models. The results show favorable levels of mercury, arsenic, and beryllium adsorption by GAC. GAC derived from low rank bituminous coal has the good comprehensive adsorption performance of HTEs. Langmuir presented the best fit of arsenic and beryllium adsorption, and Freundlich presented the best fit of mercury. The kinetics studies showed that experimental data follow Pseudo-second order. Zeolite’s capacity for ion exchange greatly affects its adsorption performance, which supplements the adsorption capacity of GAC for metal and metalloid ions. This study provides an approach that is fast, and easily integrates with existing processes for removing HTEs in entrained-flow coal gasification wastewater.

Abstract

Zhundong coal can significantly reduce the preparation temperature of activated carbon (AC) due to the high contents of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) present in it. Moreover, because of its lower operating temperature and the presence of carbon matrix, Zhundong coal can effectively inhibit the release of AAEM during the preparation of AC. For these reasons, the preparation of AC from Zhundong coal is a promising approach for the clean utilization of Zhundong coal. Accordingly, this study was aimed to investigate optimum conditions for the preparation of AC from Zhundong coal. For this purpose, at first, Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the conditions for an optimal carbonization process using a coal sample; then, the evolution of the pore structure of AC under different conditions was examined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and the N2 adsorption analyser. Furthermore, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) was performed to analyze the surface morphology of AC. Finally, by dividing the activation process into gas–solid diffusion and activation reactions, a mechanism for the evolution of pore structure during the preparation of AC was proposed. The results showed that the char with an amorphous structure and less graphite-like carbon, which was obtained by heating Zhundong coal from room temperature to 600 °C at 5 °C min−1 under the protection of N2 and then maintaining it at this temperature for 60 min, is suitable for the subsequent activation process. At low temperatures, the diffusion of H2O was dominant in the activation process, and the weak gas–solid reaction resulted in poor development of the pore structure; on the other hand, the CO2 activation reaction mainly occurred on the surface of the char due to the poor diffusion of CO2, and then, the produced pores could improve the diffusion of CO2; this led to significant development of the pore structure. With an increase in temperature, the H2O diffusion reaction was enhanced, and the pore structure of AC was completely developed; however, the diffusion of CO2 reduced with an enhancement in the CO2 activation reaction, leading to the consumption of carbon matrix by CO2 gasification instead of pore formation by the CO2 activation reaction. Therefore, proper utilization of the unique characteristics of H2O and CO2 during pore formation is important to control the activation process.

Abstract

Zeolite membranes are widely used in separation, catalysis, sensors and other fields because of their good diffusion performance, shape selection and catalysis capabilities. However, the slow synthesis rate of zeolite membranes restricts their industrialization process, and the random orientation seriously affects their performance. Therefore, this paper investigates the methods for accelerating the synthesis rate of zeolites and the roles of different methods was explored. The synthesis conditions of oriented zeolite membranes are also summarized. Microwave method can efficiently synthesize oriented zeolite membranes, but it has the defects of harsh synthesis conditions and high equipment requirements. Using physical methods and chemical methods to introduce hydroxyl radicals, which is also an effective method to improve the synthesis rate of zeolites. However, there is a lack of research on how to realize the directional synthesis of zeolite membranes during this process. Synthesis conditions, template and support properties affect the directional synthesis of zeolite membranes. Therefore, while introducing free radicals, adjusting the composition of the synthetic solution or introducing inhibitors that affect the growth direction of zeolite in the synthetic system can realize the efficient directional synthesis of zeolite membrane, which is another potential method to promote the industrialization of directional zeolite membrane besides microwave method.

Activated carbon (AC) is negatively charged in aqueous solution, which seriously restricts its application range. Quaternary ammonium salt as a common cationic surfactant was utilized to modify the surface charge distribution of materials. The evolution of the surface charge distribution of AC modified by benzalkonium chloride (BAC), diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDA) and 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl tri-methyl ammonium chloride (CTA) was investigated. Results showed that the surface charge of AC modified by CTA does not change significantly. BAC has a high molecular weight, low surface electrostatic potential and large steric hindrance due to its hydrophobic long-chain alkyl. The diffusion of BAC molecules from solution to AC changed its charge distribution. But these molecules were difficult to combine with AC surface, and most of them were adsorbed into the pores of AC to form aggregates, resulting in a significant reduction in the surface area. Uric acid (UA) is the final product of purine metabolism in humans. Elevated serum UA levels lead to the development of hyperuricemia, gout, kidney diseases, and metabolic syndrome. Accurate determination of UA plays a critical role in clinical diagnosis and laboratory investigation. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with ultraviolet detection method has been developed and validated for UA analysis. Separation was achieved by a Waters ethylene bridged hybrid (BEH) Amide column (50 mm × 2.1 mm i.d., 1.7 μm) with acetonitrile and 0.1% acetic acid in deionized water in the proportion of 90 to 10 (v/v) as the mobile phase. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.09 and 0.18 μmol/L, respectively. The method was validated by evaluating recovery (98.37–104.20%), accuracy (0.47–0.90%), and precision (1.24–1.81% for intra-batch and 1.76–3.98% for inter-batch). Abstract

Pitch precursors affording excellent spinnability, high-level oxidation-resistance, and good carbonization yields were prepared by bromination–dehydrobromination of various ratios of pyrolyzed fuel oil and coal tar pitch. The pitches exhibited spinnabilities that were much better than those of pitches prepared via simple distillation. A pitch prepared using a 1:2 ratio of fuel oil and coal tar pitch exhibited the best tensile strength. Pitch fibers of diameter 8.9 ± 0.1 μm were stabilized at 270 °C without soaking time after heating at a rate of 0.5 °C/min and carbonized at 1100 °C for 1 h after heating at 5 °C/min. The resulting carbon fibers exhibited a tensile strength, elongation, Young’s modulus, and average diameter of 1700 ± 170 MPa, 1.6 ± 0.1%, 106 ± 37 GPa, and 7.1 ± 0.2 μm, respectively.

Abstract

Blockade of the programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) interaction is currently the focus in the field of cancer immunotherapy, and so far, several monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have achieved encouraging outcomes in cancer treatment. Despite this achievement, mAbs-based therapies are struggling with limitations including poor tissue and tumor penetration, long half-life time, poor oral bioavailability, and expensive production costs, which prompted a shift towards the development of the small-molecule inhibitors of PD-1/PD-L1 pathways. Even though many small-molecule inhibitors targeting PD-1/PD-L1 interaction have been reported, their development lags behind the corresponding mAb, partly due to the challenges of developing drug-like small molecules. Herein, we report the discovery of a series of novel inhibitors targeting PD-1/PD-L1 interaction via structural simplification strategy by using BMS-1058 as a starting point. Among them, compound A9 stands out as the most promising candidate with excellent PD-L1 inhibitory activity (IC50 = 0.93 nM, LE = 0.43) and high binding affinity to hPD-L1 (KD = 3.64 nM, LE = 0.40). Furthermore, A9 can significantly promote the production of IFN-γ in a dose-dependent manner by rescuing PD-L1 mediated T-cell inhibition in Hep3B/OS-8/hPD-L1 and CD3-positive T cells co-culture assay. Taken together, these results suggest that A9 is a promising inhibitor of PD-1/PD-L1 interaction and is worthy for further study.

Abstract

We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination. Abstract

Stroke is a major public health problem leading to high rates of death and disability worldwide, but no effective pharmacological therapy is currently available except for the use of PLAT (plasminogen activator, tissue). Here we show that PARP14 (poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase family, member 14) level was significantly increased in the peri-infarct zone of photothrombotic stroke (PT) mice. Genetic knockdown and pharmacological inhibition of PARP14 aggravated functional impairment and increased infarct volume in PT mice, while overexpression of PARP14 displayed the opposite effects. Furthermore, PARP14 was abundant in microglia, and downregulation of PARP14 increased post-stroke microglial activation, whereas overexpression of PARP14 alleviated microglial activation, possibly through microglial macroautophagy/autophagy modulation. Mechanistically, overexpression of PARP14 suppressed Lpar5 (lysophosphatidic acid receptor 5) gene transcription to inhibit microglial activation post stroke. Taken together, PARP14 is a stroke-induced signal that restricts microglial activation and promotes functional recovery, and can serve as a novel target to develop new therapeutic agents for stroke. 36. Transformation of alkali and alkaline earth metals during the preparation of activated carbon from Zhundong high-alkali coal

Abstract

The preparation of activated carbon (AC) is a promising approach for the efficient utilization of Zhundong high-alkali coal. The volatilization and release of alkali and alkaline earth metal (AAEM) species can be effectively inhibited by using a lower operating temperature and a carbon matrix. However, the long time of the pyrolysis and activation process may promote the release of the AAEM from the coal during the process. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the transformation of AAEM during the preparation of AC from Zhundong high-alkali coal, and the cleanness of this process is evaluated accurately. In this study, the evolution of AAEM, distribution, and chemical speciation is characterized before and after the preparation of AC from the coal, and then thermodynamic calculations were performed using FactSage to simulate the transformation of AAEM in the coupled process of pyrolysis and activation. The results showed that in the process of AC preparation, the AAEM species inside the carbon matrix moved towards the surface of the AC with the aid of released volatiles and the activation reaction. Some Na and K species were released due to their weak binding with the carbon matrix and this resulted in the loss of Na and K content, whereas Mg and Ca were closely combined with the carbon matrix and were enriched in the AC. Furthermore, the defects and amorphous structure of the AC prepared with H2O activation were more than that of the AC prepared with CO2 activation, which meant that more of the AAEM species were exposed to the high temperature environment. As a result, the loss of AAEM content in the AC with H2O activation was higher than that in the AC with CO2 activation. In this process, a small amount of highly volatile and corrosive AAEM was produced, and the release of volatile matter and the consumption of the carbon matrix were the main factors for the AAEM loss. Therefore, the preparation of AC from Zhundong high-alkali coal is a viable method for its clean use.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton liquid scintillator detectorwith primary physics goal of neutrino mass hierarchy determination and precise measurement ofthe neutrino oscillation parameters, as well as the measurement of solar neutrinos, geo-neutrinos,supernova neutrinos and the diffuse supernova neutrinos. The detector will be built in a 700m deep underground laboratory. A multi-veto system will be built for cosmic muon detectionand background reduction. The central detector will be submerged in the ultra pure water poolinstrumented with about 2000 MCP-PMTs (20 inches) to serve as an active water Cherenkovdetector for muon tagging. Both the pool walls and the central detector external surface willbe coated with Tyvek reflector to increase the light collection efficiency. The muon detectionefficiency will be > 95% for water Cherenkov detector. With this veto system, the cosmic muoninduced fast neutron background can be reduced to the level of ~0.1 /day

Abstract

The heat exchanger network (HEN) of syngas-to-methanol process was designed and optimized based on pinch technology under the stable operation conditions to balance the energy consumption and economic gain. Inevitably, the fluctuations of production affect the stable operation of HEN in real industrial processes. The flexibility analysis of HEN was carried out in this study to minimize such disturbances by using the downstream paths method. The results show that 2/3 downstream paths cannot meet flexibility requirements, indicating that HEN doesn’t have enough flexibility to accommodate the disturbances in the actual production. The flexible HEN was then designed with the methods of dividing and subsequent merging, which led to 13.89% and 20.82% reduction in energy consumption and total cost, respectively. Thanks to enough area margin and additional alternative heat exchangers, the flexible HEN is found to be able to resist interferences and maintain the production stability and safety, only sacrificing the increase of total cost increase by 4.08%.

Abstract

Pure, highly chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), with a 63 wt % of chlorine, showed a unique-thermal-pyrolytic-phenomenon that meant it could be converted to carbon material through solid-phase carbonisation rather than liquid-phase carbonisation. The CPVC began to decompose at 270 &deg, C, with a rapid loss in mass due to dehydrochlorination and novel aromatisation and polycondensation up to 400 &deg, C. In this study, we attempted to prepare carbon fibre (CF) without oxidative stabilisation, using the aforementioned CPVC as a novel precursor. Through the processes of solution spinning and solid-state carbonisation, the spun CPVC fibre was directly converted to CF, with a carbonisation yield of 26.2 wt %. The CPVC-derived CF exhibited a relatively smooth surface, however, it still demonstrated a low mechanical performance. This was because the spun fibre was not stretched during the heat treatment. Tensile strength, Young&rsquo, s modulus and elongation values of 590 &plusmn, 84 MPa, 50 &plusmn, 8 GPa, and 1.2 &plusmn, 0.2%, respectively, were obtained from the CPVC spun fibre, with an average diameter of 19.4 &mu, m, following carbonisation at 1600 &deg, C for 5 min.

Abstract

Coxsackievirus B (CVB) is the major cause of human myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy. Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) is an intracellular sensor to detect pathogen's dsRNA. TLR3, along with TRAF6, triggers an inflammatory response through NF-κB signaling pathway. In the cells infected with CVB type 3 (CVB3), the abundance of miR-146a was significantly increased. The role of miR-146a in CVB infection is unclear. In this study, TLR3 and TRAF6 were identified as the targets of miR-146a. The elevated miR-146a inhibited NF-κB translocation and subsequently down-regulated proinflammatory cytokine expression in the CVB3-infected cells. Therefore, the NF-κB pathway can be doubly blocked by miR-146a through targeting of TLR3 and TRAF6. MiR-146a may be a negative regulator on inflammatory response and an intrinsic protective factor in CVB infection.

Abstract

For the first time, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was used as an easily-handled chlorine source for preparation of isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber (IPCF) incorporating ethylene bottom oil (EO) as a raw material. Pitch precursors were prepared by the chlorination–dehydrochlorination triggered by chlorine radicals originated from PVC; aromatization and poly-condensation reactions occurred by polyene-type radicals from PVC. Radical production and co-carbonization were facilitated by pretreatments of EO through vacuum distillation, bromination, and additional heat treatment. Pitches were prepared by the co-carbonization of pretreated EO and EO containing 20 wt% PVC, and had higher yields and better spinnability than those by simple distillation.

Abstract

An isotropic pitch precursor for fabricating carbon fibres was prepared by co-carbonization of ethylene bottom oil (EBO) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Various pre-treatments of EBO and PVC, and a high heating rate of 3 °C/min with no holding time, were evaluated for their effects on the oxidative stabilization process and the mechanical stability of the resulting fibres. Our stabilization process enhanced the volatilization, oxidative reaction and decomposition properties of the precursor pitch, while the addition of PVC both decreased the onset time and accelerated the oxidative reaction. Aliphatic carbon groups played a critical role in stabilization. Microstructural characterization indicated that these were first oxidised to carbon–oxygen single bonds and then converted to carbon–oxygen double bonds. Due to the higher heating rate and lack of a holding step during processing, the resulting thermoplastic fibers did not completely convert to thermoset materials, allowing partially melted, adjacent fibres to fuse. Fiber surfaces were smooth and homogeneous. Of the various methods evaluated herein, carbon fibers derived from pressure-treated EBO and PVC exhibited the highest tensile strength. This work shows that enhancing the naphthenic component of a pitch precursor through the co-carbonization of pre-treated EBO with PVC improves the oxidative properties of the resulting carbon fibers.

Abstract

Ethnopharmacology relevance Dioscin, a spirostane glycoside, the rhizoma of Dioscorea septemloba (Diocoreacea) is used for diuresis, rheumatism, and joints pain. Given the poor solubility and stability of Dioscin, we proposed a hypothesis that Dioscin's metabolite(s) are the active substance(s) in vivo to contribute to the reducing effects on serum uric acid levels. Aim of the study The aim of this study is to identify the active metabolite(s) of Dioscin in vivo and to explore the mechanism of its antihyperuricemic activity. Materials and methods After oral administration of Dioscin in potassium oxonate (PO) induced hyperuricemia rats and adenine-PO induced hyperuricemia mice models, serum uric acid and creatinine levels, clearance of uric acid and creatinine, fractional excretion of uric acid, and renal pathological lesions were determined were used to evaluate the antihyperuricemic effects. Renal glucose transporter-9 (GLUT-9) and organic anion transporter-1 (OAT-1) expressions were analyzed by western blotting method. Renal uric acid excretion was evaluated using stably urate transporter-1 (URAT-1) transfected human epithelial kidney cell line. Intestinal uric acid excretion was evaluated by measuring the transcellular transport of uric acid in HCT116 cells. Results In hyperuricemia rats, both 25 and 50 mg/kg of oral Dioscin decreased serum uric acid levels over 4 h. In the hyperuricemia mice, two weeks treatment of Dioscin significantly decreased serum uric acid and creatinine levels, increased clearance of uric acid and creatinine, increased fractional excretion of uric acid, and reduced renal pathological lesions caused by hyperuricemia. In addition, renal GLUT -9 was significantly down-regulated and OAT-1 was up-regulated in Dioscin treated hyperuricemia mice. Dioscin's metabolite Tigogenin significantly inhibited uric acid re-absorption via URAT1 from 10 to 100 μM. Diosgenin and Tigogenin increased uric acid excretion via ATP binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2). Conclusion Decreasing effect of Dioscin on serum uric acid level and enhancing effect on urate excretion were confirmed in hyperuricemia animal models. Tigogenin, a metabolite of Dioscin, was identified as an active substance with antihyperuricemic activity in vivo, through inhibition of URAT1 and promotion of ABCG2.

Abstract

In order to build the sensor network facing the task of multisensor crossing cueing, the requirements of initiating cueing and being cued are analyzed. Probability theory is used when building models, then probability of sensor cueing in the case of target moving is given, and, after that, the best distance between two sensors is calculated. The operational environment is described by normal distribution function. In the process of distributing sensor network, their elements, operational environment demand of cueing, and the probability of sensor network coverage are considered; then the optimization algorithm of sensor network based on hypothesis testing theory is made. The simulation result indicates that the algorithm can make sensor network which is required. On the basis of that, the two cases, including targets that make linear motion and orbit motion, are used to test the performance of the sensor network, which show that the sensor network can make uninterrupted detection on targets through multisensor cross cuing.

Abstract

To tackle the communication problem of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) complex aerial operations, we propose an automatic UAV relay communication system based on microwave directional antenna. Our system is organized by the design scheme, overall structure and working process. The system has the ability to transmit information at a distance, which solves the problem of limited communication distance caused by the transmission power limitation of UAV communication system. The system can automatically switch into different communication mode according to communication network environments to improve the communication quality. In addition, it increases the mobility and enhances endurance in severe environment to meet the emergency communication covered on demand.

Abstract

Remote control is the traditional control mode of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which limits the signal transmission distance. To accomplish ultra-long-distance UAV control, we propose a communication control system which based on 5G network to transmit UAV control signals. We develop a backstage service platform based on 5G network to connect with the communication module installed on the remote UAV. In this paper, we describe the detail of this system which realizes the normal communication control of the remote UAV and the service platform. Our experiment results show that our system has the characteristics of stability and scalability.

Abstract

The viscosity and reaction behavior of ternary RO (R Na2, Mg, Ca)-Al2O3-SiO2 slag were investigated using high temperature viscometer and “FactSage”. Particularly, more extensive experiments regarding the micro-structural characteristics of slags were clearly evaluated by combining several solid-state NMR methods. The interactional districts among the major cations, especially the variation of microstructure, were clarified. Results show that the viscosity of slag is dictated by the microstructural change. The function of cations in the microstructure of slag is related to the cation field strength (CFS). The Na cation with relatively smaller size could enter and loosen the network structure to a smaller one, and then the charge of [AlO4]− and [SiO4]− groups could be balanced by the Na cations to form more stable T (tetrahedron)–O–R structures. The Ca2+ could present both charge compensator and network modifier; likely, the Mg cation with a greater CFS in the slag preferred to act as network modifier. Additionally, Mg cation could penetrate into the Al-bearing framework deeper than Ca cation, inducing more disordered distribution of A–O structure. Consequently, the melting structure of slag with Na cation tended to form short segments. Nevertheless, a large amount of T–O–T structure could still exist in the Ca-bearing slag, and their polymeric branch structures were easily broken down and modified by Ca2+ forming chain-like structural units. Differently, Mg cation in slag could generate T–O–T clusters with more branches, eventually resulting in the interaction of such species and leading to a rapid increase of viscosity during cooling.

Abstract

Ozone-biological activated carbon (O3-BAC) process has been proved to be an efficient and cost-effective technology in advanced treatment of drinking water. However, O3-BAC raises strict requirements in adsorption, hydrodynamic and regeneration performances, which one single activated carbon could hardly all-sided meet. Blending activated carbons seems to be an appropriate and economically feasible method to deal with the issue. Thus, the uniformity and stability of activated carbon blends during water treatment, especially in backwashing process are of great importance. In this paper, cyclic experiments of downward adsorption and upward backwash on 11 typical commercial granular coal-based activated carbons and their blends were carried out in column test. Hydrodynamic performances such as bed expansion rate and bed pressure drop were measured. The uniformity and stability of activated carbon blends were investigated by determining iodine number of samples collected from different heights of activated carbon bed. Then, both traditional regression methods and back-propagation neural network model were utilized to predict superficial velocity at 30% bed expansion rate and maximum bed pressure drop of activated carbon blends. The results indicate that water backwashing process has no effect on the composition proportion of activated carbon blends, and slightly changes the particle distribution of activated carbon bed regarding pore structure and adsorption capacity. A three-layer back-propagation neural network model for superficial velocity at 30% bed expansion rate yields mean relative errors of 2.17%, which is much lower than that given by traditional regression methods such as 5.53% (weighted average), 4.08% (linear) and 4.06% (polynomial). Moreover, the back-propagation neural network model for maximum bed pressure drop yields mean relative errors of 1.37%, which is much lower than that given by traditional regression methods such as 4.31% (weighted average), 4.28% (linear) and 4.22% (polynomial). The non-linear relationships can be accurately identified by the back-propagation neural network model.
