Precipitation nowcasting has important implications for urban operation and flood prevention. Radar echo extrapolation is the common method in precipitation nowcasting. Using deep learning models to extrapolate radar echo data has great potential. The increase of lead time leads to a weaker correlation between real rainfall evolution and generated images. The evolution information is easily lost during extrapolation, which is reflected as echoes attenuation. Existing models, including Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based models, are all difficult to reduce loss and curb attenuation, which results in insufficient rainfall prediction accuracy. Aim to the problem, a Spatiotemporal Process Intensification Network (GAN-argcPredNet v2.0) based on GAN-argcPredNet v1.0 is designed. GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 reduces the loss by intensifying the influence of the previously input evolution information. A Spatiotemporal Information Changes Prediction (STIC-Prediction) network is designed as generator. With the intensification of echo feature sequence, the generator focuses on the spatiotemporal variation and generates more accurate images. Furthermore, discriminator is a Channel-Spatial Convolution (CS-Convolution) network. The discriminator intensifies the discrimination of echoes information by strengthening spatial information of single image. Identification results are fed back to the generator, which reduces the loss of important evolutionary information. The experiments are based on the radar dataset of South China. The results show that GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 performs better than other models. In heavy rainfall prediction, compared with baseline, the Probability of Detection (POD), the Critical Success Index (CSI), and the Heidke Skill Score (HSS) increase by 24.8 %, 22.2 % and 21.5 % respectively. The False Alarm Ratio (FAR) decreases by 3.76 %.

As a serious meteorological natural disaster, windstorm has caused great harm to people’s lives and property. The tracking and trending of the wind storm, as well as the spatio-temporal process changes of its key features, such as wind eye, eye-wall, and wind circle, have long been the researchers’ focuses. The use of visualization tools to help meteorologists analyze and understand the spatio-temporal features and their process of storms quickly and intuitively is of far-reaching significance to the prediction of storm activities and the engagement in other work. Yet, it is difficult to have a quick understanding of the wind features by means of current visualization methods. Generally, wind field data at a certain time in a specific area are visualized directly, but have difficulties in discovering and understanding the wind features. Besides, the changes in the wind field are mostly presented at a discrete time, which can not show continuous changes or the whole life cycle of wind features. To provide a solution to these problems, this study proposes a spatio-temporal visualization method of wind features from wind field data, which converts unified process-oriented representation to visualization with the help of visual coding. Then, a process-oriented spatio-temporal visualization method is provided to express the spatio-temporal continuous change process. Based on the data from Typhoon Jelawat, an experiment is designed to analyze the expression of spatio-temporal process of wind features, such as wind eye, wind circle, and so on. By evaluating the user feedbacks for the proposed method, it can be known that compared to other wind visualization tools, this method boasts unique advantages in recognizing wind features and describing their spatio-temporal process evolution over a period of time continuously.

Background: Emerging evidence suggests a role for orthostatic hypotension (OH) in contributing to the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The exosomes in the blood can reflect the pathological changes in the brain. Objective: To investigate whether neural-derived plasma exosomes pathogenic proteins of AD levels are associated with OH in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. Methods: There were 274 subjects without dementia included in the study: 81 control participants (controls), 101 normotensive patients with DM without OH, and 92 patients with DM and neurogenic OH (DMOH). Neural-derived exosomal proteins were measured by ELISA kits for amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau. Results: The neural-derived exosome levels of Aβ42, total tau (T-tau), and tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 (P-T181-tau) in the DM with OH group were higher than those in the DM and control groups. Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that the presence of OH in patients with DM was associated with elevated exosomal Aβ42 (β= 0.172, p = 0.018), T-tau (β= 0.159, p = 0.030), and P-T181-tau (β= 0.220, p = 0.003) levels after adjustment for age, sex, APOE ɛ4, duration of type 2 diabetes, HbA1c, and cardiovascular risk factors. Furthermore, the levels of Aβ42, T-tau, and P-T181-tau in neural-derived exosomes were correlated with HIF-1α levels and the drop in mean cerebral blood flow velocity from the supine to upright position. Conclusion: The presence of OH in DM patients was independently associated with elevated the Aβ42, T-tau, and P-T181-tau levels in neural-derived plasma exosomes. Cerebral hypoperfusion from DM with OH are likely candidate mechanisms.

Study Objectives The relationship between autonomic nervous system dysfunction measured by heart rate variability (HRV) and cognitive impairment in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients is complex and still not well understood. We aimed to analyze the role of complement activation, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) biomarkers, and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) in modulating the association of HRV with cognitive performance. Methods There were 199 subjects without dementia, including 42 healthy controls, 80 OSA patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 77 OSA patients without cognitive impairment. All participants who completed polysomnography, cognition, WMH volume, and 5-min HRV analysis were recorded during wakefulness and sleep periods. Neuron-derived exosome and astrocyte-derived exosome proteins were measured by ELISA kits. Results The OSA with MCI group were associated with a lower mean of standard deviations of R-R intervals for 5-min intervals (SDANN index) during wakefulness, standard deviation of the R-R interval (SDNN) during sleep stage and percentage of adjacent R-R intervals differing by more than 50 ms (PNN50) in each stage compared with OSA without MCI. The influence of HRV on cognition was partially mediated by complement activation (C5b-9 mediated a maximum of 51.21%), AD biomarkers, and WMH. Conclusions Lower SDANN index and PNN50 during wakefulness and SDNN and PNN50 during sleep periods were found in OSA patients with MCI, suggesting potential vulnerability to autonomic and parasympathetic dysfunction. Complement activation, AD biomarkers, and WMH might partially mediate and interact with the influence of HRV on cognitive impairment in OSA patients. Clinical Trial Registration ChiCTR1900021544.

Objective To identify an optimal lifestyle profile to protect against memory loss in older individuals. Design Population based, prospective cohort study. Setting Participants from areas representative of the north, south, and west of China. Participants Individuals aged 60 years or older who had normal cognition and underwent apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotyping at baseline in 2009. Main outcome measures Participants were followed up until death, discontinuation, or 26 December 2019. Six healthy lifestyle factors were assessed: a healthy diet (adherence to the recommended intake of at least 7 of 12 eligible food items), regular physical exercise (≥150 min of moderate intensity or ≥75 min of vigorous intensity, per week), active social contact (≥twice per week), active cognitive activity (≥twice per week), never or previously smoked, and never drinking alcohol. Participants were categorised into the favourable group if they had four to six healthy lifestyle factors, into the average group for two to three factors, and into the unfavourable group for zero to one factor. Memory function was assessed using the World Health Organization/University of California-Los Angeles Auditory Verbal Learning Test, and global cognition was assessed via the Mini-Mental State Examination. Linear mixed models were used to explore the impact of lifestyle factors on memory in the study sample. Results 29 072 participants were included (mean age of 72.23 years; 48.54% (n=14 113) were women; and 20.43% (n=5939) were APOE ε4 carriers). Over the 10 year follow-up period (2009-19), participants in the favourable group had slower memory decline than those in the unfavourable group (by 0.028 points/year, 95% confidence interval 0.023 to 0.032, P Conclusion A healthy lifestyle is associated with slower memory decline, even in the presence of the APOE ε4 allele. This study might offer important information to protect older adults against memory decline. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03653156 .

The complement system plays a crucial role in cognitive impairment in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The present study aimed to investigate the connections between complement component 8 gamma (C8G) levels in astrocyte-derived exosomes (ADEs) and cognitive impairment in OSA patients without dementia. This cross-sectional cohort study recruited 274 participants without dementia, including 124 OSA patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 100 OSA patients without MCI, and 50 healthy control subjects. Enrolled participants underwent polysomnography (PSG) evaluation, neuropsychological scale assessment, magnetic resonance imaging scanning, and collection of peripheral blood samples for quantification of complement proteins in ADEs. The findings showed higher C8G concentrations in ADEs from OSA patients with MCI than in the controls and OSA without MCI group. Logistic regression analysis suggested that C8G levels in ADEs were independently associated with MCI in OSA patients. Multivariable linear regression analysis demonstrated that C8G levels in ADEs were significantly correlated with global cognitive scores and all cognitive subdomain scores after adjusting for demographic factors (age, sex, education), vascular risk factors (Body mass index, history of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia), depressive symptoms measures, and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) values. The levels of C8G were linearly positively related to the white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volumes in Pearson's correlation analysis. Our research confirmed that C8G levels are significantly associated with cognitive impairment in OSA patients, which paves the way for novel therapeutic targets for neurocognitive dysfunction progression in OSA patients in the future.

SUMMARY An evaluation of combining ability can facilitate the selection of suitable parents and superior F1 hybrids for hybrid cotton breeding, although the molecular genetic basis of combining ability has not been fully characterized. In the present study, 282 female parents were crossed with four male parents in accordance with the North Carolina II mating scheme to generate 1128 hybrids. The parental lines were genotyped based on restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing and 306 814 filtered single nucleotide polymorphisms were used for genome‐wide association analysis involving the phenotypes, general combining ability (GCA) values, and specific combining ability values of eight fiber quality‐ and yield‐related traits. The main results were: (i) all parents could be clustered into five subgroups based on population structure analyses and the GCA performance of the female parents had significant differences between subgroups; (ii) 20 accessions with a top 5% GCA value for more than one trait were identified as elite parents for hybrid cotton breeding; (iii) 120 significant single nucleotide polymorphisms, clustered into 66 quantitative trait loci, such as the previously reported Gh_A07G1769 and GhHOX3 genes, were found to be significantly associated with GCA; and (iv) identified quantitative trait loci for GCA had a cumulative effect on GCA of the accessions. Overall, our results suggest that pyramiding the favorable loci for GCA may improve the efficiency of hybrid cotton breeding., Significance Statement General and specific combining ability values are very important factors for the selection of appropriate parents and superior combinations in hybrid cotton breeding, although the molecular genetic basis has not been fully characterized. In the present study, we identified significant single nucleotide polymorphisms for general and specific combining ability in a large‐scale North Carolina II population through a genome‐wide association study. The results obtained provide new insights with respect to our understanding of the genetic factors related to combining ability.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is mainly managed by pharmacological therapy (e.g., Benserazide and dopamine agonists). However, prolonged use of these drugs would gradually diminish their dopaminergic effect. Gut dysbiosis was observed in some patients with PD, suggesting close association between the gut microbiome and PD. Probiotics modulate the host’s gut microbiota beneficially. A 3-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted to investigate the beneficial effect of probiotic co-administration in patients with PD. Eighty-two PD patients were recruited and randomly divided into probiotic [n = 48; Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Probio-M8 (Probio-M8), Benserazide, dopamine agonists] and placebo (n = 34; placebo, Benserazide, dopamine agonists) groups. Finally, 45 and 29 patients from Probio-M8 and placebo groups provided complete fecal and serum samples for further omics analysis, respectively. The results showed that Probio-M8 co-administration conferred added benefits by improving sleep quality, alleviating anxiety, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Metagenomic analysis showed that, after the intervention, there were significantly more species-level genome bins (SGBs) of Bifidobacterium animalis, Ruminococcaceae, and Lachnospira, while less Lactobacillus fermentum and Klebsiella oxytoca in Probio-M8 group (P Lactobacillus fermentum correlated positively with the scores of UPDRS-III, HAMA, HAMD-17, and negatively with MMSE. Klebsiella oxytoca correlated negatively with feces hardness. The purpose of our study was to investigate the correlation between neural-derived plasma exosomal amyloid-β (Aβ)42, total tau (T-tau) and tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 (P-T181-tau) protein levels and cognitive impairment in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).There were 122 subjects without dementia included in the study: 27 patients with OSA and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 52 OSA patients without MCI, and 43 subjects diagnosed with simple snoring but not MCI as the control group. Neuronal-derived exosomal proteins were measured by ELISA kits for Aβ42, T-tau and P-T181-tau. The cognitive function was evaluated by a Chinese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) questionnaire, and a normal cognitive score was ≥26.The exosomal Aβ42, T-tau and P-T181-tau levels in the OSA with MCI group were higher than those in the OSA group. The Aβ42, T-tau, and P-T181-tau levels in the plasma neuronal-derived exosomes were associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment in OSA patients after additional adjustment for age, gender, education, vascular risk factors, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) or oxygen reduction index (ODI). Furthermore, there were also significant associations between Aβ42, T-tau, and P-T181-tau in neural-derived plasma exosomes and Epworth Sleepiness Scale, AHI, and ODI in OSA patients. After 1 year of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) intervention, the neuronal-derived exosome levels of Aβ42, T-tau, and P-T181-tau were significantly lower than those at baseline (P = 0.001, P = 0.012, and P = 0.034).These findings indicate that peripheral blood levels of neuronal-derived exosomal Aβ and tau proteins were increased in OSA patients with cognitive impairment. CPAP interventions could possibly improve cognitive function and be associated with decreased levels of exosomal Aβ and tau proteins.

There is accumulating evidence that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with the contribution of diabetes to Alzheimer disease (AD) progression. Neuronal mitochondrial proteins are found in plasma neuronal-derived exosomes (NDEs) at levels that reflect those in brain neurons. Here, we tested the performance of mitochondrial proteins in plasma NDEs to predict cognitive decline and brain injury in participants with diabetes. The study participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) included 41 cognitively normal control subjects, 97 individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (68 individuals with stable MCI; 29 individuals with progressive MCI), and 36 patients with AD dementia. Plasma neuroexosomal proteins were measured by ELISA kits. Spearman correlation was used to test associations between plasma neuroexosomal mitochondrial proteins and other core biomarkers of AD. Diagnostic accuracy for progressive MCI and AD was obtained for mitochondrial proteins using receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. The associations of mitochondrial proteins with the conversion from MCI to AD were assessed by Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. Plasma levels of neuroexosomal NADH ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit S3 (NDUFS3) and succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit B (SDHB) were significantly lower in patients with T2DM with AD dementia and progressive MCI than in cognitively normal subjects (P < 0.001 for both groups). We also found that plasma neuroexosomal NDUFS3 and SDHB levels were lower in progressive MCI subjects than in stable MCI subjects. Both plasma neuroexosomal NDUFS3 and SDHB offer diagnostic utility for AD. Low plasma neuroexosomal SDHB levels significantly predicted conversion from MCI to AD. In addition, low mitochondrial protein levels were associated with the rate of hippocampal and gray matter atrophy and reduced AD signature cortical thickness in progressive MCI over the follow-up period. These data suggest that both plasma neuroexosomal NDUFS3 and SDHB are already increased at the early clinical stage of AD, and indicate the promise of plasma neuroexosomal mitochondrial proteins as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for the earliest symptomatic stage of AD in participants with diabetes.

We also found that plasma neuroexosomal NDUFS3 and SDHB levels were lower in progressive MCI (274.4 ± 78.6 pg/ml, 1536.7 ± 342.8 pg/ml) than in stable MCI (319.9 ± 109.8 pg/ml, P < 0.05; 1824.7 ± 606.4 pg/ml, P < 0.05) subjects. Both plasma neuroexosomal NDUFS3 and SDHB offer diagnostic utility for AD. Low plasma neuroexosomal SDHB levels significantly predicted conversion from MCI to AD. In addition, low mitochondrial proteins levels were associated with the rate of hippocampal and gray matter atrophy, reduced AD signature cortical thickness in progressive MCI over the follow-up period. Precipitation nowcasting play a vital role in preventing meteorological disasters and doppler radar data acts as an important input for nowcasting models. The traditional extrapolation method is difficult to model highly nonlinear echo movements. The key challenge of the nowcasting mission lies in achieving high-precision radar echo extrapolation. In recent years, machine learning has made a great progress in the extrapolation of weather radar echoes. However, most of models neglect the multi-modal characteristics of radar echo data, resulting in blurred and unrealistic prediction images. This paper aims to solve this problem by utilizing the feature of the GAN that can enhance the multi-modal distribution modelling, and design the radar echo extrapolation model of GAN-argcPredNet. The model composed of argcPredNet generator and a convolutional neural network discriminator. In generator, a gate control data memory and output are designed in the rgcLSTM prediction unit of the generator, thereby reducing the loss of spatiotemporal information. In discriminator, model uses a dual-channel input method, which enables it to strictly score according to the true echo distribution, and has a more powerful discrimination ability. Through experiments on the radar data set of Shenzhen, China, the results show that the radar echo hit rate (POD) and critical success index (CSI) increased by 5.5 % and %10.4 % compared with rgcPredNet, the false alarm rate (FAR) is reduced by 15 %~20 %. From the comparison of the result graph and the evaluation index, we also found a problem. The recursive prediction method will produce the phenomenon that the prediction result will gradually deviate from the true value over time. In addition, the accuracy of high-intensity echo extrapolation is relatively low. This is a question worthy of further investigation. In the future, we will continue to conduct research from these two directions.

Objective To evaluate the effect of a decrease in blood pressure (BP) fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for orthostatic hypotension (OH) on performance in each domain of cognitive function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using a cross-sectional and within-group design. Methods Subjects were individuals without dementia and with type 2 diabetes mellitus, including 107 individuals without OH and 94 with OH (DMOH); 95 control participants were also included. BP was assessed in both the supine and standing positions. A detailed neuropsychological assessment was made in each posture for all subjects. Results There were statistically significant differences between the patients without OH and the DMOH group with regard to some cognitive measures while supine. Standing posture exacerbated and broadened cognitive deficits in the DMOH group for all measures in the different domains of cognition including executive functioning, memory, visuospatial skills, information processing speed, and attention. When group-specific supine scores were used as baseline anchors, both the patients without OH and the DMOH group showed cognitive changes when transitioning from a supine to a standing, upright position, with the DMOH group exhibiting a wider range of neuropsychological deficits in memory, visuospatial skills, executive function, and sustained attention, as well as significant changes in information processing speed. Interpretation These data demonstrate that type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with OH had transient, posture-mediated cognitive deficits in excess of those found in diabetes mellitus without OH. Understanding the effects of OH on cognition due to autonomic failure is important, particularly as clinical assessments and neuroimaging collect data only in the seated or supine positions. BackgroundDenis and Ferguson et al.’s three-column spinal theory has been widely accepted and applied. However, this three-column theory was proposed based solely on observation and experience without thorough documented data and analysis. The aim of this study was to analyze and improve Denis and Ferguson et al.’s three-column spinal theory to propose a novel three-column concept in epidemiology, morphology and biomechanics.MethodsA retrospective analysis of the computed tomography imaging data of patients with a diagnosis of T11-L5 vertebral fractures was conducted between February 2010 and December 2018. Three-dimensional (3D) distribution maps of fracture lines of all subjects were obtained based on 3D mapping techniques. In addition, a 25-year-old health male volunteer was recruited for the vertebral finite element force analysis.ResultsThe present study enrolled 459 patients (age: 48 ± 11.42 years), containing a total of 521 fractured vertebrae. The fracture lines peaked in the upper and the outer third sections of the vertebra, starting from the anterior part of the vertebral pedicles in 3-D maps. Regarding flexion and extension of the spine, the last third of the vertebral body in front of the spinal canal was one main stress center in the finite element analysis. The stress on the vertebral body was greater in front of the pedicles in the lateral bending.ConclusionThe study reveals that the posterior one-third of the vertebral body in front of the spinal canal and the posterior one-third of the vertebral body in front of the pedicle are very different in terms of fracture characteristics and risks to spinal canal (3D maps and stress distributing graphs), therefore, they should be classified as different columns. We provide strong evidence that Su’s three-column theory complies with the characteristics of vertebral physiological structure, vertebral fracture, and vertebral biomechanics.Graphical abstract

Background The crucial role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been certified in human cancers. The lncRNAs with abnormal expressions could act as tumor inhibitors or oncogenes in the advancement of tumors. LBX2-AS1 was once reported to accelerate esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Nonetheless, its function in gastric cancer (GC) remained a riddle. Methods RT-qPCR was used to examine the expression of NFIC/LBX2-AS1/miR-491-5p/ZNF703 in GC cell lines. The functions of LBX2-AS1 in GC were appraised by colony formation, EdU, flow cytometry analysis, transwell and wound healing assays. Luciferase reporter, ChIP and RNA pull down assays were utilized to evaluate the interactions among genes. Results LBX2-AS1 was up-regulated in GC cell lines. Knockdown of LBX2-AS1 repressed the proliferative, migratory, and invasive abilities of GC cells. Moreover, LBX2-AS1 was transcriptionally activated by NFIC. And LBX2-AS1 could bind with miR-491-5p. Besides, miR-491-5p depletion or ZNF703 upregulation could counteract the repressing effects of LBX2-AS1 silence on GC progression. Conclusion In a word, LBX2-AS1 up-regulated by NFIC promoted GC progression via targeting miR-491-5p/ZNF703, implying LBX2-AS1 was an underlying treatment target for GC patients.

Background This study was performed to investigate the association between lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and facet joint osteoarthritis (FJOA) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods Between March 2012 and September 2018, a total of 441 segments from 394 patients with LDH were included in the study. LDH was classified according to the Michigan State University (MSU) classification, in which the degree of LDH is divided into 3 levels (expressed as 1, 2, and 3) and the location of LDH is divided into 4 zones (described as A, AB, B, and C). Bilateral FJOA was graded from 0 to 3 using the criteria introduced by Weishaupt et al., and bilateral facet orientations were measured on axial MRI slices. A mixed-effects ordinal logistic regression model was utilized to determine the potential factors that may be associated with FJOA, including sex, age, body mass index (BMI), segment, facet orientation and tropism, and the degree and location of LDH. Results In general, the prevalence of FJOA (grade ≥ 2) was 66.2% in LDH segments. For both the left and right sides, the degree of LDH was associated with the severity of FJOA (p p = 0.002 and p p p = 0.003 for BMI, respectively), while segment, facet orientation, and facet tropism were not (p > 0.05 for all). Notably, MSU-B LDH was associated with greater odds of having more severe FJOA on the herniation side (left: p p = 0.003, OR = 2.615, 95% CI = 1.405~4.870). However, other locations of LDH were not associated with the severity of FJOA (p > 0.05 for all). Conclusions Both the degree of LDH and MSU-B LDH are associated with the severity of FJOA. The association between LDH and FJOA highlights the complexity of the etiology of FJOA.

Anti-leucine-rich glioma inactivated-1 (anti-LGI1) encephalitis is a subgroup of autoimmune encephalitis. We herein report the case of a 60-year-old man who presented with typical symptoms, including short-term memory loss, mental abnormalities, hyponatremia and seizures characterized by faciobrachial dystonic seizures and who was diagnosed with anti-LGI1 encephalitis. At the same time, he was diagnosed with essential thrombocythemia. A significant improvement was obtained by treatment with corticosteroid, immunoglobulin, mycophenolate mofetil, and hydroxyurea. Autoimmune diseases are associated with a significantly increased risk of developing myeloproliferative neoplasms, which may explain the coexistence of anti-LGI1 encephalitis and essential thrombocythema in this patient; however, but more cases and studies are needed to determine whether there is any correlation between these conditions.

Fatigue strength is always a major barrier for structural applications of metal material. Many methods have been developed to enhance the fatigue strength of structural components. Compared to other methods, surface deformation strengthening is obviously more efficient, which is characterized by the larger improvement in fatigue strength and no pollution to the environment. To guarantee the durability and safety of structural components, it is crucial to understand the effect mechanism of surface deformation strengthening on the fatigue behavior. In this review, the research process of surface deformation strengthening is summarized in detail. The effect mechanism of fatigue performance is concluded, which is mainly due to the surface grain refinement, residual compressive stress, and surface damage. Moreover, several suggestions are presented to the future research direction.

Introduction The socioeconomic costs of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in China and its impact on global economic burden remain uncertain. Methods We collected data from 3098 patients with AD in 81 representative centers across China and estimated AD costs for individual patient and total patients in China in 2015. Based on this data, we re-estimated the worldwide costs of AD. Results The annual socioeconomic cost per patient was US $19,144.36, and total costs were US $167.74 billion in 2015. The annual total costs are predicted to reach US $507.49 billion in 2030 and US $1.89 trillion in 2050. Based on our results, the global estimates of costs for dementia were US $957.56 billion in 2015, and will be US $2.54 trillion in 2030, and US $9.12 trillion in 2050, much more than the predictions by the World Alzheimer Report 2015. Discussion China bears a heavy burden of AD costs, which greatly change the estimates of AD cost worldwide.

Platelet activation and aggregation play an important role in the pathological and physiological processes of recurrent ischemic vascular events in stroke patients. The purpose of this study is to determine the association between platelet function measured in the acute period and recurrent ischemic vascular events in patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke. A total of 417 patients who were within the 24-hour period of clopidogrel-aspirin therapy after onset of a minor stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack according to the Clopidogrel in High-risk patients with Acute Nondisabling Cerebrovascular Events (CHANCE) trial were included in this study. The platelet aggregation ratio was detected using a method of continuous platelet counting; patients underwent CYP2C19 genotyping, and the baseline data were recorded. The patients underwent a 6-month follow-up period during which the recurrent ischemic vascular events were observed. Logistic regression analysis was performed to obtain the risk factors for recurrent ischemic vascular events. Fiber yield and quality are the most important traits for Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Identifying high yield and good fiber quality genes are the prime concern of researchers in cotton breeding. Association mapping offers an alternative and powerful method for detecting those complex agronomic traits. In this study, 198 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were used to screen markers associated with fiber yield and quality traits with 302 elite Upland cotton accessions that were evaluated in 12 locations representing the Yellow River and Yangtze River cotton growing regions of China.
