Abstract Background Improving the job engagement of health professionals can effectively enhance the quality of their medical services. However, few studies have investigated whether and how perceived professional benefits affect job engagement. Based on resource conservation theory, this study explored the effect of the influence of perceived professional benefits on job engagement, and also examined the mediating role of psychological availability and the moderating role of future perceived professional benefits. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in six tertiary hospitals and seven secondary hospitals in Liu Panshui, a city in western China. A total of 1,406 valid questionnaires were obtained and analysed by using correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and bootstrap tests. Result The study found a significant positive association between health professionals’ perceived professional benefits and their job engagement. Additionally, psychological availability was found to mediate this relationship. Future perceived professional benefits not only positively moderate this relationship between perceived professional benefits on health professionals’ psychological availability but also positively moderate the mediating role of psychological availability between perceived professional benefits and job engagement. Conclusion Improving health professionals’ perceived professional benefits can enhance their job engagement by increasing their psychological availability. However, for health professionals with low future perceived professional benefits, this improvement may disappear. Therefore, it is important to enhance both their current and future perceived professional benefits to improve their job engagement.

ABSTRACT: Sodium dehydroacetate (DHA-Na) is a fungicidal preservative widely used in food and animal feed. DHA-Na can induce coagulation disorders in rats and poultry by inhibiting carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent proteins; it can also impair bone development in zebrafish. However, the effects of DHA-Na on broiler chicken bones remain unknown. Here, we assessed whether DHA-Na impairs bone development in broiler chickens. We administered Suji yellow chickens with 200 to 800 mg/kg DHA-Na, 2 mg/kg vitamin K, or both for 2 mo. Bone metabolite–related serum indicators, tissue micromorphology, and relevant protein expression were monitored during the treatment period. We also assessed primary chicken osteoblast activity, differentiation, and bone metabolite–related proteins after treatment with DHA-Na, vitamin K, or both. The results demonstrated that DHA-Na reduced bone index values and serum and bone osteoblast differentiation marker levels but blocked bone vitamin K cycle. DHA-Na also increased serum osteoclast differentiation marker levels, as well as the bone ratio of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand to osteoprotegerin ratio. Moreover, DHA-Na reduced bone trabecular number, thickness, and area and increased trabecular separation considerably. In general, compared with the control group, the DHA-Na group demonstrated impairments in osteoblast activity and differentiation, as well as in the vitamin K cycle. By contrast, vitamin K supplementation led to considerable attenuation of the DHA-Na-induced decrease in osteogenic marker levels, along with a considerable increase in serum bone absorption marker levels and restoration of DHA-Na-induced bone microstructure damage. Vitamin K also attenuated DHA-Na-induced impairment in osteoclasts. In conclusion, the results indicated that in broiler chickens, DHA-Na supplementation can damage bones by inhibiting osteoblast function and increasing osteoclast activity; this damage can be prevented through vitamin K supplementation.

The trend of male celebrities endorsing female products is increasing. However, research is lacking on whether this influence is due to the positive emotions generated by the male celebrity's attractiveness or the peer pressure due to mass purchases by the celebrity's fans, and how these effects differ across products with different attributes. This study aims to fill the gap in the existing literature by investigating the influence of male endorsers on female consumers purchase intention, and to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms by which attractiveness and conformity jointly influence purchase decisions. This study used a mixed-design text experiment to investigate the impact of male endorsers' attractiveness and conformity on female college students' positive product attitude and purchase intention for gender-neutral product, female skincare product, and female intimate product, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). The data collected from 456 female college students were analyzed using bootstrap analysis. The study found that both male endorsers' attractiveness and conformity can enhance female college students' positive product attitude and promote their purchase intention for gender-neutral product. However, for female skincare product, male endorsers' attractiveness affects their positive product attitude and purchase intention. Nevertheless, when conformity was present, attractiveness no longer had an effect. Furthermore, for individuals with high levels of loneliness, attractiveness had a detrimental effect on their positive product attitude. On the other hand, conformity had a positive effect by promoting positive product attitude and increasing purchase intention. For female's intimate product, attractiveness did not affect positive product attitude and purchase intention, but the positive effect of conformity remained significant, and both relationships were not moderated by loneliness. It enhances our comprehension of the intricate dynamics underlying the influence of male celebrity endorsements on consumer purchasing decisions, and also offers theoretical justification for the selection of male endorsers for diverse female product.

Federated Learning (FL) enables decentralized data utilization while maintaining edge user privacy, but it faces challenges due to statistical heterogeneity. Existing approaches address client drift and data heterogeneity issues. However, real-world settings often involve low-quality data with noisy features, such as covariate drift or adversarial samples, which are usually ignored. Noisy samples significantly impact the global model’s accuracy and convergence rate. Assessing data quality and selectively aggregating updates from high-quality clients is crucial, but dynamically perceiving data quality without additional computations or data exchanges is challenging. In this paper, we introduce the FedDQA (Federated learning via Data Quality-Aware) (FedDQA) framework. We discover increased data noise leads to slower loss reduction during local model training. We propose a loss sharpness-based Data-Quality-Awareness (DQA) metric to differentiate between high-quality and low-quality data. Based on the DQA, we design a client selection algorithm that strategically selects participant clients to reduce the negative impact of noisy clients. Experiment results indicate that FedDQA significantly outperforms the baselines. Notably, it achieves up to a 4% increase in global model accuracy and demonstrates faster convergence rates.

Ancient paintings, as a vital component of cultural heritage, encapsulate a profound depth of cultural significance. Over time, they often suffer from different degradation conditions, leading to damage. Existing ancient painting inpainting methods struggle with semantic discontinuities, blurred textures, and details in missing areas. To address these issues, this paper proposes a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based ancient painting inpainting method named RG-GAN. Firstly, to address the inconsistency between the styles of missing and non-missing areas, this paper proposes a Regional Attention-Style Transfer Module (RASTM) to achieve complex style transfer while maintaining the authenticity of the content. Meanwhile, a multi-scale fusion generator (MFG) is proposed to use the multi-scale residual downsampling module to reduce the size of the feature map and effectively extract and integrate the features of different scales. Secondly, a multi-scale fusion mechanism leverages the Multi-scale Cross-layer Perception Module (MCPM) to enhance feature representation of filled areas to solve the semantic incoherence of the missing region of the image. Finally, the Global Context Perception Discriminator (GCPD) is proposed for the deficiencies in capturing detailed information, which enhances the information interaction across dimensions and improves the discriminator’s ability to identify specific spatial areas and extract critical detail information. Experiments on the ancient painting and ancient Huaniao++ datasets demonstrate that our method achieves the highest PSNR values of 34.62 and 23.46 and the lowest LPIPS values of 0.0507 and 0.0938, respectively.

In adverse foggy weather conditions, images captured are adversely affected by natural environmental factors, resulting in reduced image contrast and diminished visibility. Traditional image dehazing methods typically rely on prior knowledge, but their efficacy diminishes in practical, complex environments. Deep learning methods have shown promise in single-image dehazing tasks, but often struggle to fully leverage depth and edge information, leading to blurred edges and incomplete dehazing effects. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a deep-guided bilateral grid feature fusion dehazing network. This network extracts depth information through a dedicated module, derives bilateral grid features via Unet, employs depth information to guide the sampling of bilateral grid features, reconstructs features using a dedicated module, and finally estimates dehazed images through two layers of convolutional layers and residual connections with the original images. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on public datasets, successfully removing fog while preserving image details.

Rolling bearings are prone to failure due to the complexity and serious operational environment of rotating equipment. Intelligent fault diagnosis based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has become an effective tool to ensure the reliable operation of rolling bearings. However, interference caused by environmental noise and variable working conditions can affect the data. To solve this problem, we propose an improved fault diagnosis method called deep convolutional neural network based on multi-scale features and mutual information (MMDCNN). In our approach, a multi-scale convolutional layer is placed at the front end of a 1D_CNN to maximize the retention of the multi-scale initial features. Meanwhile, the key fault features are further enhanced adaptively by introducing a self-attention mechanism. Then, the composite loss function is constructed by maximizing mutual information as an auxiliary loss based on cross-entropy loss; thus, the proposed method can extract robust fault features with high generalization performance. To demonstrate the superiority of MMDCNN, we compared the performance of our scheme with several existing deep learning models on two datasets. The results show that the proposed model successfully achieves bearing fault diagnosis with interference from noise and variable working conditions, possessing a powerful fault feature extraction capability.

Abstract Background Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically important pathogen, characterized by its genetic and antigenic variation. The PRRSV vaccine is widely used, however, the unsatisfied heterologic protection and the risk of reverse virulence raise the requirement to find some new anti-PRRSV strategies for disease control. Tylvalosin tartrate is used to inhibit PRRSV in the field non-specifically, however, the mechanism is still less known. Methods The antiviral effects of Tylvalosin tartrates from three producers were evaluated in a cell inoculation model. Their safety and efficacy concentrations, and effecting stage during PRRSV infection were analyzed. And, the Tylvalosin tartrates regulated genes and pathways which are potentially related to the anti-viral effect were further explored by using transcriptomics analysis. Last, the transcription level of six anti-virus-related DEGs was selected to confirm by qPCR, and the expression level of HMOX1, a reported anti-PRRSV gene, was proved by western blot. Results The safety concentrations of Tylvalosin tartrates from three different producers were 40 µg/mL (Tyl A, Tyl B, and Tyl C) in MARC-145 cells and 20 µg/mL (Tyl A) or 40 µg/mL (Tyl B and Tyl C) in primary pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) respectively. Tylvalosin tartrate can inhibit PRRSV proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, causing more than 90% proliferation reduction at 40 µg/mL. But it shows no virucidal effect, and only achieves the antiviral effect via long-term action on the cells during the PRRSV proliferation. Furthermore, GO terms and KEGG pathway analysis was carried out based on the RNA sequencing and transcriptomic data. It was found that the Tylvalosin tartrates can regulate the signal transduction, proteolysis, and oxidation-reduction process, as well as some pathways such as protein digestion and absorption, PI3K-Akt signaling, FoxO signaling, and Ferroptosis pathways, which might relate to PRRSV proliferation or host innate immune response, but further studies still need to confirm it. Among them, six antivirus-related genes HMOX1, ATF3, FTH1, FTL, NR4A1, and CDKN1A were identified to be regulated by Tylvalosin tartrate, and the increased expression level of HMOX1 was further confirmed by western blot. Conclusions Tylvalosin tartrate can inhibit PRRSV proliferation in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. The identified DEGs and pathways in transcriptomic data will provide valuable clues for further exploring the host cell restriction factors or anti-PRRSV target.

Abstract Background Leaders’ emotions and emotion regulation strategies influence subordinates’ attitudes and behaviors, while previous studies have mostly taken an emotional perspective. Leaders’ emotional competence also has an impact on subordinates through motivational and cognitive pathways. Based on self-determination theory, this study examined the impact of emotional leadership on subordinates’ work engagement, as well as the mediating role of subordinates’ intrinsic motivation and the moderating role of traditionality. Methods We first performed a scenario experiment study in which 116 Chinese college students were asked to read experimental materials on different leadership behaviors and answer relevant questions. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey was conducted, in which 347 Chinese enterprise employees were asked to rate their own experiences with emotional leadership, work engagement and intrinsic motivation. We used SPSS 25.0 for performance reliability analysis, correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis to test the reliability of the scales and investigate the relationship between the variables. Bootstrap analysis was used to test the mediating and moderating effects. Results Emotional leadership has a significant direct positive effect on subordinates’ work engagement and positively influences subordinates’ work engagement through the mediation of subordinates’ intrinsic motivation. The effect of emotional leadership on intrinsic motivation is stronger for those with high traditionality than for those with low traditionality. Conclusion Emotional leadership can improve subordinates’ work engagement by stimulating their intrinsic motivation. Therefore, managers need to be able to effectively regulate and manage subordinates’ emotions to stimulate their intrinsic motivation and to differentiate the management of subordinates with different levels of traditionality to improve subordinates’ work engagement.

BackgroundThe implication of the monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) in Takayasu arteritis (TAK) remains unclear.ObjectiveWe aimed to assess the predictive value of the MHR to identify coronary involvement with TAK and determine the patient prognosis.MethodsIn this retrospective study, 1,184 consecutive patients with TAK were collected and assessed, and those who were initially treated and with coronary angiography were enrolled and classified according to coronary involvement or no involvement. Binary logistic analysis was performed to assess coronary involvement risk factors. Receiver-operating characteristic analysis was used to determine the MHR value to predict coronary involvement in TAK. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) were recorded in patients with TAK and coronary involvement within a 1-year follow-up, and Kaplan–Meier survival curve analysis was conducted to compare MACEs between them stratified by the MHR.ResultsA total of 115 patients with TAK were included in this study, and 41 of them had coronary involvement. A higher MHR was found for TAK with coronary involvement than for TAK without coronary involvement (P = 0.014). Multivariate analysis showed that the MHR is an independent risk factor for coronary involvement in TAK (odds ratio: 92.718, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.813–3056.291, P = 0.011). With the best cut-off value of 0.35, the MHR identified coronary involvement with 53.7% sensitivity and 68.9% specificity [area under the curve (AUC): 0.639, 95% CI: 0.544–0.726, P=0.010] and identified left main disease and/or three-vessel disease (LMD/3VD) with 70.6% sensitivity and 66.3% specificity (AUC: 0.704, 95% CI: 0.612–0.786, P = 0.003) in TAK. Combined with other variables, the MHR identified coronary involvement with 63.4% sensitivity and 90.5% specificity (AUC: 0.852, 95% CI: 0.773–0.911, P < 0.001), and identified LMD/3VD with 82.4% sensitivity and 78.6% specificity (AUC: 0.827, 95% CI: 0.720–0.934, P < 0.001) in TAK. A total of 39 patients with TAK and coronary involvement were followed up for 1 year, and 5 patients suffered a MACE. Those with an MHR >0.35 had a higher MACE incidence than their counterparts with an MHR ≤0.35 (χ2 = 4.757, P = 0.029).ConclusionsThe MHR could be a simple, practical biomarker for identifying coronary involvement and LMD/3VD in TAK and predicting a long-term prognosis.

BackgroundCarcinoid heart disease is increasingly recognized and challenging to manage due to limited outcomes data. This is the largest known cohort study of valvular pathology, treatment (including pulmonary and tricuspid valve replacements [PVR and TVR]), dispairties, mortality, and cost in patients with malignant carcinoid tumor (MCT).MethodsMachine learning-augmented propensity score-adjusted multivariable regression was conducted for clincal outcomes in the 2016–2018 U.S. National Inpatient Sample (NIS). Regression models were weighted by the complex survey design and adjusted for known confounders and the likelihood of undergoing valvular procedures.ResultsAmong 101,521,656 hospitalizations, 55,910 (0.06%) had MCT. Patients with MCT vs. those without had significantly higher inpatient mortality (2.93 vs. 2.04%, p = 0.002), longer mean length of stay (12.20 vs. 4.62, p < 0.001), and increased mean total cost of stay ($70,252.18 vs. 51,092.01, p < 0.001). There was a step-wise increased rate of TVR and PVR with each subsequent year, with significantly more TV (0.16% vs. 0.01, p < 0.001) and PV (0.03 vs. 0.00, p = 0.040) diagnosed with vs. without MCT for 2016, with comparable trends in 2017 and 2018. There were no significant procedural disparities among patients with MCT for sex, race, income, urban density, or geographic region, except in 2017, when the highest prevalence of PV procedures were performed in the Western North at 50.00% (p = 0.034). In machine learning and propensity score augmented multivariable regression, MCT did not significantly increase the likelihood of TVR or PVR. In sub-group analysis restricted to MCT, neither TVR nor PVR significantly increased mortality, though it did increase cost (respectively, $141,082.30, p = 0.015; $355,356.40, p = 0.012).ConclusionThis analysis reflects a favorable trend in recognizing the need for TVR and PVR in patients with MCT, with associated increased cost but not mortality. Our study also suggests that pulmonic valve pathology is increasingly recognized in MCT as reflected by the upward trend in PVRs. Further research and updated societal guidelines may need to focus on the “forgotten pulmonic valve” to improve outcomes and disparities in this understudied patient population.

How to promote employees’ knowledge-sharing behaviors has become a focus of managers and researchers. Based on the theory of relative deprivation, this study explored the mechanism of organizational procedural justice on employees’ intra-team knowledge sharing, as well as the mediating role of relative deprivation and the moderating role of group identification. A path analysis was conducted on 416 valid questionnaire data, and the results revealed that: (1) Procedural justice has a positive effect on intra-team knowledge sharing; (2) Both group relative deprivation and individual relative deprivation play a mediating role between procedural justice and intra-team knowledge sharing, but they have opposite effects. Procedural justice reduces both group relative deprivation and individual relative deprivation, but individual relative deprivation decreases employees’ intra-team knowledge sharing, while group relative deprivation increases it. (3) Group identification has an enhancing moderating effect on the relationship between group relative deprivation and intra-team knowledge sharing, while the moderating effect on the relationship between individual relative deprivation and intra-team knowledge sharing is not significant. Therefore, enterprises should make procedures such as performance appraisal and salary allocation justify and transparent to reduce individual relative deprivation, but should moderately trigger group relative deprivation flexibly according to the situation, while enhancing employee group identification through cultural construction.

Abstract It is a big challenge for unsupervised video segmentation without any object annotation or prior knowledge. In this article, we formulate a completely unsupervised video object segmentation network which can pop out the most salient object in an input video by self‐growth, called Pop‐Net. Specifically, in this article, a novel self‐growth strategy which helps a base segmentation network to gradually grow to stick out the salient object as the video goes on, is introduced. To solve the sample generation problem for the unsupervised method, the sample generation module which fuses the appearance and motion saliency is proposed. Furthermore, the proposed sample optimization module improves the samples by using contour constrains for each self‐growth step. Experimental results on several datasets (DAVIS, DAVSOD, VideoSD, Segtrack‐v2) show the effectiveness of the proposed method. In particular, the state‐of‐the‐art methods on completely unfamiliar datasets (no fine‐tuned datasets) are performed.

Employees' emotions have an important effect on their job performance, thus leaders can influence subordinates' emotions through emotional contagion and emotional appeal and ultimately affect their job performance. Based on the affective events theory, this study examines the impact of emotional leadership on the subordinates' job performance, the mediating role of subordinates' positive emotions, and the moderating role of susceptibility to positive emotion. Hierarchical regression analysis of 362 valid questionnaires showed that: (1) emotional leadership has a significant positive effect on subordinates' job performance; (2) subordinates' positive emotion partially mediated the relationship between emotional leadership and subordinates' job performance; (3) subordinates' susceptibility to positive emotion positively moderated the relationship between emotional leadership and positive emotions, i.e., the higher the subordinates' susceptibility to positive emotion, the greater the effect of emotional leadership on their positive emotions. This study validates affective events theory, deepens the understanding of the influence mechanism and boundary conditions of emotional leadership on subordinates' job performance, and provides some references for employee performance management.

Based on the common existence of the mixed road, a switched controller with consideration of the difference between estimation optimal and current flux (EOCFD) is presented in the lattice hydrodynamic model of traffic flow. Based on the Hurwitz criteria and the $H_{\infty }$ -norm, stability conditions for the curved road and straight road scenarios are obtained with the transfer functions $G_{0}$ and $G_{1}$ respectively. By analyzing the Bode-plot of transfer functions $G_{0}$ and $G_{1}$ , stability analysis is performed with the feedback gain $k$ , the radian $\theta _{j}$ and the curvature radius $R$ . These theoretical results indicate that the switched control scheme prompts the traffic flow to be more stable in both curved and straight roads. Compared with Cheng’s model, numerical simulations with multiple perturbations confirm that the switched control scheme can further suppress the traffic congestion with a lower feedback gain on mixed road.

Due to the rapid development of the Intelligent Traffic System (for short, ITS), the shared information among successive vehicles can be acquired accurately and reliably. In this paper, a control scheme utilizing the successive flux difference under honk environment (SFDHE) is investigated in the lattice hydrodynamic model. Based on the Hurwitz criteria and the $H_{\infty }$ -norm, the sufficient condition for the transfer function is derived with the control theory analysis. The Bode-plot of transfer function indicates that the stability of the traffic flow is increased significantly with the novel controller. Moreover, the numerical simulation results of the new model are compared with that of Peng’s model, which demonstrates that traffic jams can be suppressed efficiently when the SFDHE control signal is taken into account.

This study tackles the semi‐supervised segmentation task for the objects that have large motion or appearance change in a video sequence, which is very challenging to the existing methods of video object segmentation (VOS). In this study, a novel adaptive approach is presented, named adaptive convolutional neural network for large change VOS, which determines when and how to fine‐tune the convolutional neural network through the motion metric and the appearance metric among consecutive video frames. Additionally, a lightweight optimisation algorithm for the predictive binary mask is introduced which is effective for pixel prediction by eliminating the discrete points cluster. To illustrate the advantages of this approach, experiments have been performed on four VOS datasets, which demonstrate that the proposed method is highly effective and could achieve the state‐of‐the‐art on these datasets.

Epicatechin (EPI) is a dietary flavonoid that is present in many foods and possesses various bioactivities. We assessed the effects of EPI supplementation on intestinal barrier integrity in mice. Thirty-six mice were assigned to three groups and fed a standard diet or a standard diet supplemented with 50 or 100 mg EPI/kg (n = 12 per group). After 21 days of rearing, blood and intestinal samples were collected from eight randomly selected mice. Supplementation with 50 and 100 mg/kg EPI decreased (p < 0.05) the serum diamine oxidase activity and D-lactic acid concentration and increased (p < 0.05) the duodenal, jejunal, and ileal abundance of tight junction proteins, such as occludin. Moreover, it lowered (p < 0.05) the duodenal, jejunal, and ileal tumor necrosis factor-α contents and enhanced (p < 0.05) the duodenal and jejunal catalase activities and ileal superoxide dismutase activity. Supplementation with a lower dose (50 mg/kg) decreased (p < 0.05) the ileal interleukin-1β content, whereas supplementation with a higher dose (100 mg/kg) increased (p < 0.05) the duodenal and jejunal glutathione peroxidase activities. Furthermore, supplementation with 50 and 100 mg/kg EPI decreased (p < 0.05) cell apoptosis, cleaved cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteinase-3 (caspase-3), and cleaved caspase-9 contents in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. In conclusion, EPI could improve intestinal barrier integrity in mice, thereby suppressing intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress and reducing cell apoptosis.

Background and Objectives: Cancer and coronary artery disease (CAD) often coexist. Compared to quantitative coronary angiography (QCA), fractional flow reserve (FFR) has emerged as a more reliable method of identifying significant coronary stenoses. We aimed to assess the specific management, safety and outcomes of FFR-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in cancer patients with stable CAD. Materials and Methods: FFR was used to assess cancer patients that underwent coronary angiography for stable CAD between September 2008 and May 2016, and were found to have ≥50% stenosis by QCA. Patients with lesions with an FFR > 0.75 received medical therapy alone, while those with FFR ≤ 0.75 were revascularized. Procedure-related complications, all-cause mortality, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or urgent revascularizations were analyzed. Results: Fifty-seven patients with stable CAD underwent FFR on 57 lesions. Out of 31 patients with ≥70% stenosis as measured by QCA, 14 (45.1%) had an FFR ≥ 0.75 and lesions were reclassified as moderate and did not receive PCI nor DAPT. Out of 26 patients with p = 0.03). Conclusions: Further studies are needed to define the optimal therapeutic approach for cancer patients with CAD. Using an FFR cut-off point of 0.75 to guide PCI translates into fewer interventions and can facilitate cancer care. There was an overall reduction in mortality in patients that received a stent, suggesting increased resilience to cancer therapy and progression.

Background and Objectives: There are no nationally representative studies of mortality and cost effectiveness for fractional flow reserve (FFR) guided percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in patients with cancer. Our study aims to show how this patient population may benefit from FFR-guided PCI. Materials and Methods: Propensity score matched analysis and backward propagation neural network machine learning supported multivariable regression was performed for inpatient mortality in this case-control study of the 2016 National Inpatient Sample (NIS). Regression results were adjusted for age, race, income, geographic region, metastases, mortality risk, and the likelihood of undergoing FFR versus non-FFR PCI. All analyses were adjusted for the complex survey design to produce nationally representative estimates. Results: Of the 30,195,722 hospitalized patients meeting criteria, 3.37% of the PCIs performed included FFR. In propensity score adjusted multivariable regression, FFR versus non-FFR PCI significantly reduced inpatient mortality (OR 0.47, 95%CI 0.35–0.63; p < 0.001) and length of stay (LOS) (in days; beta −0.23, 95%CI −0.37–−0.09; p = 0.001) while increasing cost (in USD; beta $5708.63, 95%CI, 3042.70–8374.57; p < 0.001), without significantly increasing complications overall. FFR versus non-FFR PCI did not specifically change cancer patients’ inpatient mortality, LOS, or cost. However, FFR versus non-FFR PCI significantly increased inpatient mortality for Hodgkin’s lymphoma (OR 52.48, 95%CI 7.16–384.53; p < 0.001) and rectal cancer (OR 24.38, 95%CI 2.24–265.73; p = 0.009). Conclusions: FFR-guided PCI may be safely utilized in patients with cancer as it does not significantly increase inpatient mortality, complications, and LOS. These findings support the need for an increased utilization of FFR-guided PCI and further studies to evaluate its long-term impact.

In order to prevent the occurrence of traffic accidents, drivers always focus on the running conditions of the preceding and rear vehicles to change their driving behavior. By taking into the “backward-looking” effect and the driver’s anticipation effect of flux difference consideration at the same time, a novel two-lane lattice hydrodynamic model is proposed to reveal driving characteristics. The corresponding stability conditions are derived through a linear stability analysis. Then, the nonlinear theory is also applied to derive the mKdV equation describing traffic congestion near the critical point. Linear and nonlinear analyses of the proposed model show that how the “backward-looking” effect and the driver’s anticipation behavior comprehensively affect the traffic flow stability. The results show that the positive constant γ, the driver’s anticipation time τ, and the sensitivity coefficient p play significant roles in the improvement of traffic flow stability and the alleviation of the traffic congestion. Furthermore, the effectiveness of linear stability analysis and nonlinear analysis results is demonstrated by numerical simulations.

The Philosophical Tropism of Milan Kundera: The Novel in Search of the lost Definition The philosophical tropism of Milan Kundera is manifested in particular by his novels in search of lost definition. The creation and the redefinition of concepts in his novels aiming at elucidating the essence show his ambition to " make philosophy in the way of a novelist". We examine his processes in the invention of concepts and the definition of words, as well as the similarity between his works and phenomenology, particularly Merleau-Ponty's approach. Through the metaphoricity of language and the inseparability between definitions and characters in his novels, Kundera revives a missed rendezvous between philosophy and novel. The definition of concept is no longer the privilege of philosopher. By the tireless pursuit of defining "the indefinable", Kundera transforms the novel into a place of phenomenological description and a field of thought experimentation, despite his ambiguity about this rapprochement.

Background: Traditional laparoscopic No.12a lymph node dissection in radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer may damage the peripheral blood vessels, and is not conducive to the full exposure of the portal vein and the root ligation of the left gastric vein. We recommend a new surgical procedure, the portal vein approach, to avoid these problems. Methods: 25 patients with advanced gastric cancer underwent radical laparoscopic gastrectomy and No.12a lymph node were dissected by portal vein approach, including 7 cases with total gastrectomy, 18 cases with distal gastric resection, 14 males and 11 females. Operative time, intraoperative blood loss, time to first flatus, postoperative hospital stay, number of total lymph node dissection and No.12a lymph node dissection, No.12a lymph node metastasis rate and postoperative complications were statistically observed. Results: All the patients were operated successfully and No.12a lymph node were cleaned by portal vein approach. A total of 683 lymph nodes were dissected, with the average number of lymph nodes dissection and positive lymph nodes were (27.3 ± 12.7) and (3.8 ± 5.6) respectively. The average number of No.12a lymph node dissection was (2.4 ± 1.95) and the metastasis rate of No.12a lymph node was 16% (4/25). The average operation time of radical laparoscopic distal and total gastrectomy were (239.2 ± 51.4) min and (295.1 ± 27.7) min respectively. The mean intraoperative blood loss was (134.0 ± 65.7) ml, and postoperative first anal exhaust time was (2.24 ± 0.86) d. The mean time to fluid intake was (4.2 ± 1.7) d, and postoperative hospitalization time was (9.6 ± 5.0) d. Without portal vein injure, anastomotic leakage, gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction and other complications were observed in all patient. Conclusion: Our results show that the laparoscopic No.12a lymph node dissection by portal vein approach for gastric cancer is safe, feasible and has certain clinical application value.

Summary: The regulation of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) trafficking affects multiple brain functions, such as learning and memory. We have previously shown that Thorase plays an important role in the internalization of AMPARs from the synaptic membrane. Here, we show that N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) activation leads to increased S-nitrosylation of Thorase and N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF). S-nitrosylation of Thorase stabilizes Thorase-AMPAR complexes and enhances the internalization of AMPAR and interaction with protein-interacting C kinase 1 (PICK1). S-nitrosylated NSF is dependent on the S-nitrosylation of Thorase via trans-nitrosylation, which modulates the surface insertion of AMPARs. In the presence of the S-nitrosylation-deficient C137L Thorase mutant, AMPAR trafficking, long-term potentiation, and long-term depression are impaired. Overall, our data suggest that both S-nitrosylation and interactions of Thorase and NSF/PICK1 are required to modulate AMPAR-mediated synaptic plasticity. This study provides critical information that elucidates the mechanism underlying Thorase and NSF-mediated trafficking of AMPAR complexes.

In this study, we investigated the effects of alginate oligosaccharide (AOS) on the intestinal microbiota and intestinal barrier integrity in weaned pigs. Twenty-four weaned pigs were equally assigned to either a control group (fed the basal diet) or an AOS group (fed the basal diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg AOS). AOS upregulated caecal and colonic tight junction protein expression levels but downregulated caecal pro-inflammatory cytokine expression levels. AOS increased the caecal and colonic abundance of phospho-adenosine 5′-monophosphate-activated protein kinase α (p-AMPKα) and decreased the abundance of caecal intra-nuclear nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) p65. Furthermore, AOS increased the caecal prevalence of several bacteria belonging to Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes as well as the caecal and colonic concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Thus, AOS alters the intestinal microbiota composition and SCFA concentrations in weaned pigs, thereby influencing the intestinal inflammatory responses and barrier integrity by regulating NF-κB and AMPK pathways.

Neuronal degeneration in the zebrafish retina stimulates Müller glia (MG) to proliferate and generate multipotent progenitors for retinal repair. Controlling this proliferation is critical to successful regeneration. Previous studies reported that retinal injury stimulates pSmad3 signaling in injury-responsive MG. Contrary to these findings, we report pSmad3 expression is restricted to quiescent MG and suppressed in injury-responsive MG. Our data indicates that Tgfb3 is the ligand responsible for regulating pSmad3 expression. Remarkably, although overexpression of either Tgfb1b or Tgfb3 can stimulate pSmad3 expression in the injured retina, only Tgfb3 inhibits injury-dependent MG proliferation; suggesting the involvement of a non-canonical Tgfb signaling pathway. Furthermore, inhibition of Alk5, PP2A or Notch signaling rescues MG proliferation in Tgfb3 overexpressing zebrafish. Finally, we report that this Tgfb3 signaling pathway is active in zebrafish MG, but not those in mice, which may contribute to the different regenerative capabilities of MG from fish and mammals.

Oyster racks identification relies on manual in situ assessment and often leads to a compensation dispute in aquacultural damage assessment. This study proposes an efficient classification method to identify oyster racks using unmanned aerial vehiclesw (UAVs) images. After image preprocessed by the morphology-based opening operation and mosaicing, the Canny edge detection algorithm, an edge line reparation algorithm, and the multiresolution segmentation techniques are applied to recognize the boundary of oyster racks and the number of oyster racks are further obtained. In this study, a case study was carried out in the District 23 of Dongshi fishing port on September 4, 2015 and October 5, 2015 to evaluate the influence of the Typhoon Dujuan. Based on the image identification, eight horizontal racks were destroyed by the storm surges and strong winds, but the raft-string racks were increased by 60, which were steered from neighbor districts. The damaged ratio of oyster racks was successfully identified and 38 racks were eligible for disaster relief. Comparing to the current manual in situ damage assessment process taking over one month, the proposed process provides a timely and quantitative assessment by efficiently identifying oyster racks on the UAV images within one week, which demonstrated that the proposed process is a promising way for the efficient damage assessment of oyster racks.

Abstract Background As the most populous nation in the world, China has now becoming an emerging ageing society. Shanghai is the first city facing the challenge of ageing demographics. Against this background, a study that employs self-rated health (SRH) assessment system was designed to explore the health status of Shanghai elders, and learn their attitudes toward health issues; as well as to investigate the determinants of SRH among Shanghai elders. Understanding SRH is crucial for finding appropriate solutions that could effectively tackle the increasing eldercare demand. Methods This study adopted a quantitative research strategy. Using a multistage stratified cluster sampling method, we conducted a questionnaire survey in August 2011 in Shanghai, which collected 2001 valid survey responses. SRH assessments were categorized by five levels: very good, fairly good, average, fairly poor, or poor. The respondents’ functional status was evaluated using the Barthel index of activities for daily living. In the data analysis, we used chi-squared test to determine differences in socio-demographic characteristics among various groups. The teleost retina grows throughout life and exhibits a robust regenerative response following injury. Critical to both these events are Muller glia (or, Muller glial cells; MGs), which produce progenitors for retinal growth and repair. We report that Fgf8a may be an MG niche factor that acts through Notch signaling to regulate spontaneous and injury-dependent MG proliferation. Remarkably, forced Fgf8a expression inhibits Notch signaling and stimulates MG proliferation in young tissue but increases Notch signaling and suppresses MG proliferation in older tissue. Furthermore, cessation of Fgf8a signaling enhances MG proliferation in both young and old retinal tissue. Our study suggests that multiple MG populations contribute to retinal growth and regeneration, and it reveals a previously unappreciated role for Fgf8a and Notch signaling in regulating MG quiescence, activation, and proliferation.

Background and objective: The MTHFR gene encodes the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase known to be involved in the homocysteine–methionine pathway. It has been reported that the deficiency of MTHFR activity may cause hyperhomocysteinemia which results in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies reported a correlation between the MTHFR gene polymorphisms (677 T/C and 1298 A/C) and lower MTHFR activity and its association with preterm birth in various populations. Since these results were conflicting, we analyzed the genetic association of MTHFR gene 677 T/C and 1298 A/C polymorphisms with preterm birth in Korean women. Materials and methods: The subjects for case–control study were collected a total of 226 Korean women (98 preterm-birth patients and 128 controls). Genotype frequency differences between the case and the control were assessed using chi-square tests. Mann–Whitney t-test was used to estimate the effects of 1298 A/C genotype on clinicopathological characteristics (systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, birth weight, and gestational age at delivery) in preterm-birth patients. Results: Our results showed that the MTHFR 677 C/T polymorphism was significantly associated with preterm-birth patients in the analysis of genotype frequency (P = 0.044) and the over-dominant model (OR = 0.54; 95% CI, 0.320–0.920; P = 0.023). The recessive model showed a marginal trend toward significance (OR = 0.47; 95% CI, 0.220–1.010; P = 0.046). The 1298 A/C polymorphism was also associated with reduced preterm-birth risk in the recessive model (P = 0.032). In the correlation analysis, the 1298 C allele was significantly associated with increasing of gestational age at delivery in preterm-birth patients (P = 0.034). Conclusions: Our findings suggested that the MTHFR gene 677 C/T and 1298 A/C polymorphisms might have protective effects for preterm birth in the Korean women. Low-molecular-weight chitosan (LMWC), a product of chitosan deacetylation, possesses anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, a porcine small intestinal epithelial cell line, IPEC-J2, was used to assess the protective effects of LMWC on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal epithelial cell injury. IPEC-J2 cells were pretreated with or without LMWC (400 μg/mL) in the presence or absence of LPS (5 μg/mL) for 6 h. LMWC pretreatment increased (p < 0.05) the occludin abundance and decreased (p < 0.05) the tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) production, apoptosis rate and cleaved cysteinyl aspartate-specific protease-3 (caspase-3) and -8 contents in LPS-treated IPEC-J2 cells. Moreover, LMWC pretreatment downregulated (p < 0.05) the expression levels of TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1) and TNFR-associated death domain and decreased (p < 0.05) the nuclear and cytoplasmic abundance of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) p65 in LPS-stimulated IPEC-J2 cells. These results suggest that LMWC exerts a mitigation effect on LPS-induced intestinal epithelial cell damage by suppressing TNFR1-mediated apoptosis and decreasing the production of proinflammatory cytokines via the inhibition of NF-κB signalling pathway.

Gecko has remarkable ability to control its adhesion and friction during running to realize a swift climbing or running on vertical walls or upside down ceilings. This ability has received considerable interest of researchers. During the recent decade, significant progress has been made in understanding the mechanism and the biomimetic fabrication of gecko-inspired dry adhesives. While people generally desire a strong and reversible adhesion property, this article described the progress in the investigation of the properties of gecko hierarchical structures, and the corresponding theoretical understandings, and then presented our recent progresses on the flexible controlled adhesion and friction of gecko surface and biomimetic surfaces and a demonstration of a hybrid clamp to ascertain the mechanical property of control principles is also involved. Gecko-inspired adhesives with flexibly controlled adhesion and friction performances have been developed. Macroscopic sliding of those adhesive surfaces with anisotropic hierarchical microscopic structures in a desired direction could be carried out and engage or disengage a flexible control of strong adhesion and friction, and acquire an “intelligent” adhesion.

Geckos can climb steadily and quickly on different surfaces under various environmental conditions. Extensive experiments have been conducted using gecko toe, setal array, single seta and single spatula to explore the physical principles of gecko adhesion and friction. This work focuses on the effect of environment (i.e. substrate materials and relative humidity [RH]) and experimental conditions (i.e. preload, sliding velocity, and sliding direction) on gecko adhesion and friction through an isolated gecko setal array. Experimental results show that when sliding a setal array in gripping direction, adhesion and friction can be enhanced by more than 200% by increasing surface energy, 60% by increasing relative humidity, and only slightly by increasing sliding velocity; an appropriate preload increase can also cause an enhancement. When RH >40%, adhesion and friction become saturated, and higher sliding velocity and preload can realize the saturation at a lower RH. When a preload is oversized in gripping direction or when sliding a setal array against substrates in releasing direction, the setal array deforms severely and always exhibits a preload-dominated repulsion. A strong anisotropic property is revealed when sliding a setal array in gripping and releasing direction. These results help understand the remarkable abilities of gecko swiftly controlling strong attachment and easy detachment, which inspire the design and fabrication of gecko-inspired reversible dry adhesives.

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the factors associated with the health status of older Chinese people living in the community, in order to inform strategies to expand access to healthcare.MethodsTwo-phase stratified cluster sampling was applied; 2000 older people participated in this study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted in Shanghai between June and August, 2011. Descriptive analysis was used to examine the respondents' characteristics. Based on Andersen's healthcare utilization model, a chi-squared test and multiple logistic regression were performed to examine the influences of predisposing, enabling, need, and contextual factors on healthcare utilization.ResultsWe found that 44.5% of the older people in the sample had good self-reported health status, while 12.8% were poor, 14.5% had visited hospitals or clinics as outpatients in the previous two weeks, and 16.5% had been hospitalized in the previous year. Logistic regression analysis revealed that outpatient health services were more likely to be used by women and those whose income was from friends or social relief, who had poor to good self-reported health status, who were experiencing declining health, who engaged in volunteer activities, and who had chronic diseases. Meanwhile, hospitalization was more likely among those in the older age groups, those with pension income, living in outer suburbs, with poor self-reported health status, experiencing difficulty with activities of daily living and outdoor activities, or having a chronic disease.ConclusionsThe results showed the impact of economic status, health status, demographic and social characteristics, and other factors on the health service utilization of elderly people living in the community in Shanghai. Need variables were the strongest predictors of health service use, although contextual factors also contributed.

Summary: Unlike mammals, zebrafish can regenerate a damaged retina. This remarkable regenerative response is mediated by Müller glia (MG) that undergo a reprogramming event that drives their proliferation and the generation of multipotent progenitors for retinal repair. The mechanisms that drive MG reprogramming are poorly understood. Here, we report that Leptin and Gp130-coupled receptors, acting via a Jak/Stat signaling pathway, stimulate MG reprogramming and progenitor formation in the injured retina. Importantly, we find that ascl1a gene expression, which drives MG reprogramming in fish and mammals, is regulated in a Jak/Stat-dependent manner and requires consensus Stat-binding sites for injury-dependent activation. Finally, we identify cytokines that are induced by retinal injury and exhibit a remarkable synergy in their ability to activate Jak/Stat signaling and MG reprogramming in the uninjured retina. Our study not only furthers our understanding of retina regeneration in zebrafish but also suggests new strategies for awakening retina regeneration in mammals. : In zebrafish, Müller glia respond to retinal injury by undergoing a reprogramming event that allows them to divide and generate progenitors for retinal repair. Zhao et al. now show that Jak/pStat3 signaling is necessary for progenitor formation. They report that pStat3 signaling is activated by cytokines expressed by injury-responsive Müller glia. They find that Leptin and IL-11 are induced in the injured retina, necessary for retina regeneration, and sufficient for stimulating Müller glia reprogramming in the uninjured retina.

Summary: Müller glia (MG) in the zebrafish retina respond to retinal injury by generating multipotent progenitors for retinal repair. Here, we show that Insulin, Igf-1, and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling components are necessary for retina regeneration. Interestingly, these factors synergize with each other and with heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) and cytokines to stimulate MG to generate multipotent progenitors in the uninjured retina. These factors act by stimulating a core set of signaling cascades (Mapk/Erk, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase [PI3K], β-catenin, and pStat3) that are also shared with retinal injury and exhibit a remarkable amount of crosstalk. Our studies suggest that MG both produce and respond to factors that stimulate MG reprogramming and proliferation following retinal injury. The identification of a core set of regeneration-associated signaling pathways required for MG reprogramming not only furthers our understanding of retina regeneration in fish but also suggests targets for enhancing regeneration in mammals. : Müller glia are responsible for mediating retina regeneration in zebrafish. Wan et al. report on signaling systems activated by injury and necessary for retina regeneration. They identify a variety of growth factors and cytokines that stimulate Müller glia proliferation and retina regeneration by activating Mapk, Pi3k, β-catenin, and pStat3 signaling pathways. Their studies reveal a remarkable synergy and crosstalk among the growth factors and cytokines and provide evidence that this crosstalk is necessary for Müller glia proliferation.

Background and Objectives: The ACE gene encodes the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a component of the renin-angiotensin system. Increased ACE activity may cause abnormal regulation of placental circulation and angiogenesis, resulting in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies have reported that the insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the ACE gene is associated with the development of preterm birth (PTB). However, results of the association between ACE gene I/D and PTB are inconsistent in various populations. Therefore, we performed a case-control study and a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between ACE I/D polymorphism and PTB. Materials and Methods: We analyzed a total of 254 subjects (111 patients with PTB and 143 women at ≥38 weeks gestation) for the case-control study. For the meta-analysis, we searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and NCBI databases with the terms “ACE,” “angiotensin-converting enzyme,” “preterm birth,” “preterm delivery,” and their combinations. Results: Our results of the case-control study indicated that ACE I/D polymorphism is significantly associated with PTBs in the overdominant genetic model (odds ratio (OR) 0.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.347−0.949, p = 0.029) and that the ID genotype of ACE I/D polymorphism has a protective effect for PTB (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.333−0.986, p = 0.043). Similarly, the meta-analysis showed that the OR for the ACE gene ID genotype was 0.66 (95% CI 0.490−0.900, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The ACE gene ID genotype has a significant association with PTB and is a protective factor for PTB. A larger sample set and functional studies are required to further elucidate of our findings.

To examine the job satisfaction of nurses who are caring for older adults in healthcare settings in Shanghai, and to explore the underlying factors in order to explain and predict nurses' job satisfaction.China has the largest elderly population in the world, and its population is aging rapidly. Studies on job satisfaction of nurses providing care for the elderly in China can help to identify problem areas and develop strategies for the improvement of nurses' working conditions. However, to date, this subject matter has not been thoroughly studied in the Chinese context. Previous studies in other countries show that many factors impact nurses' job satisfaction, with the practice environment being a critical factor. There is a serious nursing shortage in China, especially in the big cities such as Shanghai. Given the increasing care demand of the aging population, learning about the job satisfaction level among nurses who are caring for older adults can provide essential information to help attract and retain nurses in this specialty area.A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 444 nurses in 22 elderly care institutions in Shanghai. The Chinese version of the Index of Work Satisfaction (IWS) and the Nursing Practice Environment Scale were instruments used. Inferential statistical tests used to analyze the data included Spearman correlation analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and hierarchical regression tests.The average overall IWS (part B) score was 135.21 ± 19.34. Personality, job and organizational characteristics were found to be the most influential factors, and the practice environment was identified as having the strongest impact on job satisfaction (Beta = 0.494).Job satisfaction level among nurses who are caring for older adults in Shanghai is moderate, but the data suggest that this could be greatly increased if the nursing practice environment was improved.
