La vestimenta tradicional forma parte del patrimonio de una cultura y es reflejo de su idiosincrasia, su seña de identidad arraigada en la historia. En esta investigación analizamos los culturemas relativos a la indumentaria tradicional de Corea, el hanbok. Tomando como fuente la web turística institucio­nal de promoción del país asiático VisitKorea, hemos obtenido un corpus formado por un total de 18 culturemas. Para llevar a cabo el estudio hemos establecido una lista de técnicas traslativas a nivel mi­crotextual que se emplean en la traducción de estas palabras culturales para hacerlas comprensibles a hablantes de español, tratando de salvar así la enorme distancia lingüística y cultural entre ambas áreas. Nuestro interés se dirige a las unidades oracionales —no solo a las unidades léxicas—, en las cuales se reflejan distintos aspectos culturales en forma de paráfrasis o traducción explicativa. Como resultado del análisis concluimos que las técnicas que se usan con más recurrencia para traducir los culturemas de nuestro corpus son el préstamo, la descripción del aspecto y la descripción de los usuarios. A lo largo de la investigación hemos constatado que, para reducir la enorme brecha lingüístico-cultural entre Corea y los países hispanos, resulta imprescindible el dominio de las habilidades y los conoci­mientos lingüísticos e interculturales durante la labor de traducción-interpretación, más allá del puro trasvase verbal.

Existing atlases for the human brainstem were generated from magnetic resonance images or traditional histologically stained slides, but both are insufficient for the identification of detailed brainstem structures at uniform intervals. In this study, a novel brainstem atlas based on sectioned images was generated that shows the true color and shape, as well as the accurate location of the nuclei and tracts; it reveals the striking contrast between gray and white matter, as well as fine structures. In total, 212 structures, including nuclei and tracts, were annotated in axial, coronal, and sagittal sectioned images (48-bit true color images; 0.2 mm intervals, 0.06 mm × 0.06 mm pixel size). To verify the accuracy of the annotations, a volume model of the brainstem was constructed for independent observations of the three planes. In this paper, we describe several interesting structures included in the atlas. These were located in regions of the spinal cord, caudal and rostral medulla oblongata, pons, caudal and rostral midbrain. The junctions of these regions are also shown. By depicting the fine structures of the human brainstem in detail, this atlas allows comprehensive understanding of the complicated topographies of the brainstem. As such, it will be of value for neuroanatomy education and research, in addition to enriching the literature on the human brain.

In this study, we presented movable surface models to help medical students understand the multiaxial movements of the hip joint. The secondary objective was to demonstrate a simple method to make movable surface models for other researchers. We used 166 surface models of the virtual human, and the commercial software was used for all the processes described in this study. Virtual joints were created for the hip joint of the surface models to simulate realistic movements of the joints. Bone surface models were processed to maintain the original shape of the bones during movement. Muscle surface models were processed to express deformation of the muscle shapes during movement. Next, the muscle and bone surface models were moved over six movements of the hip joint (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, lateral rotation, and medial rotation). The surface models of these six movements were saved and packaged in a PDF file. The PDF file enabled users to see the stereoscopic shapes of the bones and muscles of the hip joint and to scrutinize the six movements on the X, Y, and Z axes of the joint. The movable surface models of the hip joint of this study will be helpful for medical students to learn the multiaxial movements of the hip joint. We expect to develop simulations of other joints that can be used in the education of medical students using the materials and methods described in this study.

The oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of organic sulfur compounds over tungsten oxide supported on highly ordered mesoporous SnO2 (WOx/meso-SnO2) was investigated. A series of WOx/meso-SnO2 with WOx contents from 10 wt% to 30 wt%, were prepared by conventional wet impregnation. The physico-chemical properties of the WOx/meso-SnO2 catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, and the temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (H2-TPR). The characterization results indicated that these catalysts possessed mesoporous structures with uniform pores, high specific surface areas, and well-dispersed polyoxotungstate species on the surface of meso-SnO2 support. The ODS performances were evaluated in a biphasic system (model oil/acetonitrile, Sinitial = 2000 ppm), using H2O2 as an oxidant, and acetonitrile as an extractant. Dibenzothiophene (DBT) in the model oil was removed completely within 60 min at 50 °C using 20 wt% WOx/meso-SnO2 catalyst. Additionally, the effect of reaction temperature, H2O2/DBT molar ratio, amount of catalyst and different sulfur-containing substrates on the catalytic performances were also investigated in detail. More importantly, the 20 wt% WOx/meso-SnO2 catalyst exhibited 100% surfur-removal efficiency without any regeneration process, even after six times recycling.

Itching is an unpleasant sensation that provokes the desire to scratch. In general, itching is caused by dermatologic diseases, but it can also be caused by systemic diseases. Since itching hampers patients’ quality of life, it is important to understand the appropriate treatment and pathophysiology of pruritus caused by systemic diseases to improve the quality of life. Mechanisms are being studied through animal or human studies, and various treatments are being tested through clinical trials. We report current trends of two major systemic diseases: chronic kidney disease and cholestatic liver disease. This review summarizes the causes and pathophysiology of systemic diseases with pruritus and appropriate treatments. This article will contribute to patients’ quality of life. Further research will help understand the mechanisms and develop new strategies in the future.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge regarding the hypothalamic nuclei is essential for understanding neuroanatomy and has substantial clinical relevance. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to contribute to elucidate the complex hypothalamic architecture for research and provide an anatomical basis for clinical brain operation. METHODS: In this research, high-resolution and true-color sectioned images from Visible Korean were employed for hypothalamic nuclei and neighboring structures surface modeling, and a high-resolution three-dimensional atlas of the hypothalamus was created. RESULTS: Surface models of 26 structures including the hypothalamic nuclei and its neighboring structures were produced, which contained 5 anterior hypothalamic areas’ nuclei, 4 intermediate hypothalamic areas’ nuclei, 3 lateral hypothalamic areas’ nuclei, and 2 posterior hypothalamic areas’ nuclei, as well as 12 hypothalamic neighboring structures. CONCLUSIONS: The study evaluated the topographical anatomy of the hypothalamic nuclei and its neighboring structures based on true-color and highresolution sectioned images of Visible Korean.

Cranial nerve ganglia, which are prone to viral infections and tumors, are located deep in the head, so their detailed anatomy is difficult to understand using conventional cadaver dissection. For locating the small ganglia in medical images, their sectional anatomy should be learned by medical students and doctors. The purpose of this study is to elucidate cranial ganglia anatomy using sectioned images and three-dimensional (3D) models of a cadaver.One thousand two hundred and forty-six sectioned images of a male cadaver were examined to identify the cranial nerve ganglia. Using the real color sectioned images, real color volume model having a voxel size of 0.4 × 0.4 × 0.4 mm was produced.The sectioned images and 3D models can be downloaded for free from a webpage, anatomy.dongguk.ac.kr/ganglia. On the images and model, all the cranial nerve ganglia and their whole course were identified. In case of the facial nerve, the geniculate, pterygopalatine, and submandibular ganglia were clearly identified. In case of the glossopharyngeal nerve, the superior, inferior, and otic ganglia were found. Thanks to the high resolution and real color of the sectioned images and volume models, detailed observation of the ganglia was possible. Since the volume models can be cut both in orthogonal planes and oblique planes, advanced sectional anatomy of the ganglia can be explained concretely.The sectioned images and 3D models will be helpful resources for understanding cranial nerve ganglia anatomy, for performing related surgical procedures.

In the Visible Korean, serially sectioned images with real color and high resolution have been prepared from four cadaveric subjects: male whole body, female whole body, male head, and female pelvis. Recently, segmented images of the female whole body were manufactured, permitting the distribution of the complete four data sets. The purpose of this report was to promote the applications of sectioned and segmented images from the Visible Korean by announcing them. Reduced image data were loaded to self-developed browsing software; using the browsing software, the contents could be quickly grasped and evaluated by other investigators. The four data sets were compared to disclose the individual merits and demerits. The sectioned and segmented images showed the possibility to be used to reconstruct the stereoscopic volume and surface models of body structures. The Visible Korean is expected to contribute to the interactive simulation of medical learning and clinical practice.

Although there have been studies investigating the clinical effects of warm needling (WN) for specific diseases, a comprehensive review of WN is needed. Four Korean internet databases were used in the review of WN treatment performed in Korea. The search terms used to retrieve articles were “warm needling (in Korean; 온침),” “warm acupuncture,” and “warm needle.” A total of 29 articles were reviewed. The following aspects of WN were investigated: language and terminology, study design, use of Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture, research ethics, moxibustion types, number of moxa used, moxa combustion time, needle retention time, treatment time and frequency, acupoints, meridians, acupuncture size and depth, disease classification, pattern identification, outcome measures, and adverse effect. More sophisticated and precise studies on WN are required.

Aim: To carry out a 3D vector reconstruction of the typical cervical vertebra from anatomical sections of the “Korean Visible Human” for educational purposes. Material and Methods: The anatomical subject was a 33-year-old Korean man who died of leukemia. He was 164 cm tall and weighed 55 kg. This man donated his body to science. Her body was frozen and cut into several anatomical sections after an MRI and CT scan. These anatomical sections were made using a special saw called a 0.2 mm thick cryomacrotome. Thus 8100 cuts were obtained. Only the sections numbered 940 to 1200 were used for our study. A segmentation by manual contouring of the different parts of the typical cervical vertebra was made using the software Winsurf version 3.5 on a laptop PC running Windows 7 equipped with a Ram of 8 gigas. Results: Our 3D vector model of the typical cervical vertebra is easily manipulated using the Acrobat 3DPDF interface. Each part of the vertebra accessible in a menu can be displayed, hidden or made transparent, and 3D labels are available as well as educational menus for learning anatomy. Conclusion: This original work constitutes a remarkable educational tool for the anatomical study of the typical cervical vertebra and can also be used as a 3D atlas for simulation purposes for training in therapeutic gestures.
