Search

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. WEAVE is the new wide-field spectroscopic facility for the prime focus of the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, Spain. Its fibre positioner is essential for the accurate placement of the spectrograph's ~960-fibre multiplex. To maximise the assignment of its optical fibres, WEAVE uses a simulated annealing algorithm called Configure, which allocates the fibres to targets in the field of view. We have conducted an analysis of the algorithm's behaviour using a subset of mid-tier WEAVE-LOFAR fields, and adjusted the priority assignment algorithm to optimise the total fibres assigned per field, and the assignment of fibres to the higher priority science targets. The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) are unique local laboratories for studying the formation and evolution of small galaxies in exquisite detail. The Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) is an NOAO community DECam survey of the Clouds mapping 480 square degrees (distributed over ~2400 square degrees at ~20% filling factor) to ~24th mag in ugriz with the goal of identifying broadly distributed, low surface brightness stellar populations associated with the stellar halos and tidal debris of the Clouds. SMASH will also derive spatially-resolved star formation histories covering all ages out to large radii from the MCs that will further complement our understanding of their formation. Here, we present a summary of the survey, its data reduction, and a description of the first public Data Release (DR1). The SMASH DECam data have been reduced with a combination of the NOAO Community Pipeline, PHOTRED, an automated PSF photometry pipeline based mainly on the DAOPHOT suite, and custom calibration software. The attained astrometric precision is ~15 mas and the accuracy is ~2 mas with respect to the Gaia DR1 astrometric reference frame. The photometric precision is ~0.5-0.7% in griz and ~1% in u with a calibration accuracy of ~1.3% in all bands. The median 5 sigma point source depths in ugriz bands are 23.9, 24.8, 24.5, 24.2, 23.5 mag. The SMASH data already have been used to discover the Hydra II Milky Way satellite, the SMASH 1 old globular cluster likely associated with the LMC, and very extended stellar populations around the LMC out to R~18.4 kpc. SMASH DR1 contains measurements of ~100 million objects distributed in 61 fields. We present the discovery of a very faint stellar system, SMASH 1, that is potentially a satellite of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Found within the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH), SMASH 1 is a compact ($r_h = 9.1^{+5.9}_{-3.4}$ pc) and very low luminosity (M_V = -1.0 +/- 0.9, $L_V=10^{2.3 +/- 0.4}$ Lsun) stellar system that is revealed by its sparsely populated main sequence and a handful of red-giant-branch candidate member stars. The photometric properties of these stars are compatible with a metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.2) and old (13 Gyr) isochrone located at a distance modulus of ~18.8, i.e. a distance of ~57 kpc. Situated at 11.3$^\circ$ from the LMC in projection, its 3-dimensional distance from the Cloud is ~13 kpc, consistent with a connection to the LMC, whose tidal radius is at least 16 kpc. Although the nature of SMASH 1 remains uncertain, its compactness favors it being a stellar cluster and hence dark-matter free. If this is the case, its dynamical tidal radius is only <19 pc at this distance from the LMC, and smaller than the system's extent on the sky. Its low luminosity and apparent high ellipticity ($\epsilon=0.62^{+0.17}_{-0.21}$) with its major axis pointing toward the LMC may well be the tell-tale sign of its imminent tidal demise., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We report the discovery of one RR Lyrae star in the ultra--faint satellite galaxy Hydra II based on time series photometry in the g, r and i bands obtained with the Dark Energy Camera at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, Chile. The RR Lyrae star has a mean magnitude of $i = 21.30\pm 0.04$ which translates to a heliocentric distance of $151\pm 8$ kpc for Hydra II; this value is $\sim 13\%$ larger than the estimate from the discovery paper based on the average magnitude of several blue horizontal branch star candidates. The new distance implies a slightly larger half-light radius of $76^{+12}_{-10}$ pc and a brighter absolute magnitude of $M_V = -5.1 \pm 0.3$, which keeps this object within the realm of the dwarf galaxies. The pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae star ($P=0.645$ d, $\Delta g = 0.68$ mag) suggest Hydra II may be a member of the intermediate Oosterhoff or Oosterhoff II group. A comparison with other RR Lyrae stars in ultra--faint systems indicates similar pulsational properties among them, which are different to those found among halo field stars and those in the largest of the Milky Way satellites. We also report the discovery of 31 additional short period variables in the field of view (RR Lyrae, SX Phe, eclipsing binaries, and a likely anomalous cepheid). We present the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy, Hydra II, found serendipitously within the data from the ongoing Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) conducted with the Dark Energy Camera on the Blanco 4m Telescope. The new satellite is compact (r_h = 68 +/- 11 pc) and faint (M_V = -4.8 +/- 0.3), but well within the realm of dwarf galaxies. The stellar distribution of HydraII in the color-magnitude diagram is well-described by a metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -2.2) and old (13 Gyr) isochrone and shows a distinct blue horizontal branch, some possible red clump stars, and faint stars that are suggestive of blue stragglers. At a heliocentric distance of 134 +/- 10 kpc, Hydra II is located in a region of the Galactic halo that models have suggested may host material from the leading arm of the Magellanic Stream. A comparison with N-body simulations hints that the new dwarf galaxy could be or could have been a satellite of the Magellanic Clouds., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. We present a proper-motion study on models of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Sculptor, based on the predicted proper-motion accuracy of Gaia measurements. Gaia will measure proper motions of several hundreds of stars for a Sculptor-like system. Even with an uncertainty on the proper motion of order 1.5 times the size of an individual proper-motion value of ~10 mas/century, we find that it is possible to recover Sculptor's systemic proper motion at its distance of 79 kpc., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; to appear in the proceedings of the GREAT-ITN conference on "The Milky Way Unravelled by Gaia", Barcelona (Dec 1-5 2014)

We present a revised analysis of a speculated stellar bridge between the Milky Way dwarf galaxies Leo IV and Leo V. Using data acquired with Subaru/Suprime-Cam over a 1deg x 4deg field encompassing the two satellites and the region in between, we confirm our previous detection of a stellar overdensity between Leo IV and Leo V (de Jong et al. 2010). The larger area coverage and improved depth of our current dataset allow for an improved analysis of the stellar overdensity that had previously appeared to bridge the two galaxies. A main-sequence turn-off feature visible in the stacked colour-magnitude diagram of the contiguously observed Subaru fields reveals an extended stellar structure at a distance of approximately 20 kpc. Its angular proximity to the Virgo overdensity, as well as a good correspondence in distance and metallicity, suggests that the smaller structure we detect may be associated with the much larger Virgo stellar overdensity., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; to appear in the proceedings of the Subaru conference on Galactic Archaeology, Shuzenji, Japan (Nov. 1-4 2011)

We present the first metallicity distribution functions of the old field populations in the Magellanic Clouds. Our metallicities are based on the Fourier decomposition of Type ab RR Lyrae light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III). On the metallicity scale of Zinn & West; we find a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.50 +/- 0.24 dex based on 16776 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) we obtain -1.70 +/- 0.27 dex based on 1831 RR Lyrae stars. These uncertainties represent the intrinsic spread in the population rather than the standard deviation of the mean. Our results are in good agreement with the few existing spectroscopic metallicity determinations for LMC RR Lyrae stars from the literature. For both the LMC and the SMC the metallicity spread exceeds 1 dex in [Fe/H]. The distribution of metallicities in both Clouds is very uniform, and no significant metallicity gradient is detectable. We also do not find any pronounced populations of extremely metal-poor RR Lyrae candidates with metallicities well below -2 dex, although we need to caution that the photometric method used may overestimate the metallicities of metal-deficient stars. Moreover, because of stellar evolutionary effects one does not expect to observe many RR Lyrae stars among very metal-poor horizontal branch stars. We suggest that the Magellanic Clouds experienced fairly rapid and efficient early enrichment involving pre-enriched gas as well as possibly gas infall, while metal loss through outflows does not seem to have played a significant role. Moreover we suggest that the differences in the metallicities of the old population of LMC and SMC make an origin from a single, common progenitor unlikely, unless the separation happened very early on., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, 12 pages, 13 figures

Stellar streams are key players in many aspects of Milky Way studies and, in particular, studying their orbital dynamics is crucial for furthering our understanding of the Milky Way's gravitational potential. Although this is not a trivial task when faced with incomplete dynamical phase-space information, transverse motions of streams can nevertheless be comprehended by harnessing the information contained within their radial velocity gradients. Such methods are not only applicable to stellar streams, but also to HI streams residing in the Milky Way halo. Here, I present the results of two studies that use radial velocity gradients to determine the system's orbit: for Hercules, one of the 'ultra-faint' dwarf galaxies exhibiting a large ellipticity and located at a distance of 140kpc, showing that it may in fact be a stellar stream, and for a string of high-velocity HI clouds belonging to the GCN complex, indicating its likelihood for being a gaseous stream at a distance of approximately 20kpc., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of "Assembling the Puzzle of the Milky Way", Le Grand-Bornand (Apr 17-22, 2011)

We investigate the possibility that Hercules, a recently discovered Milky Way (MW) satellite, is a stellar stream in the process of formation. This hypothesis is motivated by Hercules' highly elongated shape as well as the measurement of a tentative radial velocity gradient along its body. The application of simple analytical techniques on radial velocity data of its member stars provides tight constraints on the tangential velocity of the system (v_t = -16^{+6}_{-22} km/s, relative to the Galactic Standard of Rest). Combining this with its large receding velocity (145 km/s) and distance (138 kpc) yields an orbit that would have taken Hercules to within 6^{+9}_{-2} kpc of the Galactic centre approximately 0.6 Gyr ago. We show that a string of HI clouds that form part of the high-velocity cloud complex known as GCN is a probable gaseous stream extending over more than 50 deg in the Galactic halo. The radial velocity gradient along the stream is used to deduce transverse velocities as a function of distance, enabling a family of orbits to be computed. We find that a direction of motion towards the Galactic disk coupled with a mid-stream distance of ~20 kpc provides a good match to the observed sky positions and radial velocities of the HI clouds comprising the stream. With an estimated mass of 10^5 Msun, its progenitor is likely to be a dwarf galaxy. However, no stellar counterpart has been found amongst the currently known Galactic dwarf spheroidal galaxies or stellar streams and the exact origin of the stream is therefore currently unknown., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the possibility that the recently discovered Hercules Milky Way satellite is in fact a stellar stream in formation, thereby explaining its very elongated shape with an axis ratio of 3 to 1. Under the assumption that Hercules is a stellar stream and that its stars are flowing along the orbit of its progenitor, we find an orbit that would have recently brought the system close enough to the Milky Way to induce its disruption and transformation from a bound dwarf galaxy into a stellar stream. The application of simple analytical techniques to the tentative radial velocity gradient observed in the satellite provides tight constraints on the tangential velocity of the system (v_t = -16^{+6}_{-22} km/s in the Galactic Standard of Rest). Combined with its large receding velocity, the determined tangential velocity yields an orbit with a small pericentric distance (R_peri = 6^{+9}_{-2} kpc). Tidal disruption is therefore a valid scenario for explaining the extreme shape of Hercules. The increase in the mean flattening of dwarf galaxies as one considers fainter systems could therefore be the impact of a few of these satellites not being bound stellar systems dominated by dark matter but, in fact, stellar streams in formation, shedding their stars in the Milky Way's stellar halo., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have obtained deep photometry in two 1x1 degree fields covering the close pair of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) Leo IV and Leo V and part of the area in between. We find that both systems are significantly larger than indicated by previous measurements based on shallower data and also significantly elongated. With half-light radii of r_h=4'.6 +- 0'.8 (206 +- 36 pc) and r_h=2'.6 +- 0'.6 (133 +- 31 pc), respectively, they are now well within the physical size bracket of typical Milky Way dSph satellites. Their ellipticities of epsilon ~0.5 are shared by many faint (M_V>-8) Milky Way dSphs. The large spatial extent of our survey allows us to search for extra-tidal features with unprecedented sensitivity. The spatial distribution of candidate red giant branch and horizontal branch stars is found to be non-uniform at the ~3 sigma level. This substructure is aligned along the direction connecting the two systems, indicative of a possible `bridge' of extra-tidal material. Fitting the stellar distribution with a linear Gaussian model yields a significance of 4 sigma for this overdensity, a most likely FWHM of ~16 arcmin and a central surface brightness of ~32 mag arcsec^{-2}. We investigate different scenarios to explain the close proximity of Leo IV and Leo V and the possible tidal bridge between them. Orbit calculations demonstrate that they are unlikely to be remnants of a single disrupted progenitor, while a comparison with cosmological simulations shows that a chance collision between unrelated subhalos is negligibly small. Leo IV and Leo V could, however, be a bound `tumbling pair' if their combined mass exceeds 8 +- 4 x 10^9 M_sun. The scenario of an internally interacting pair appears to be the most viable explanation for this close celestial companionship. We present a simple result in which the distance gradient along a stream can be used to derive the transverse velocity (i.e. proper motion) along it, if the line-of-sight velocity is also known. We show its application to a mock orbit to illustrate its validity and usage. For less extended objects, such as globular clusters and satellite galaxies being tidally disrupted, the same result can be applied in its small-angle approximation. A useful crude approximation for Abelian functions is developed and applied to orbits. The bound orbits in the power-law potentials A*r^{-alpha} take the simple form (l/r)^k = 1 + e cos(m*phi), where k = 2 - alpha > 0 and 'l' and 'e' are generalisations of the semi-latus-rectum and the eccentricity. 'm' is given as a function of 'eccentricity'. For nearly circular orbits 'm' is sqrt{k}, while the above orbit becomes exact at the energy of escape where 'e' is one and 'm' is 'k'. Orbits in the logarithmic potential that gives rise to a constant circular velocity are derived via the limit of small alpha. For such orbits, r^2 vibrates almost harmonically whatever the 'eccentricity'. Unbound orbits in power-law potentials are given in an appendix. The transformation of orbits in one potential to give orbits in a different potential is used to determine orbits in potentials that are positive powers of r. These transformations are extended to form a group which associates orbits in sets of six potentials, e.g. there are corresponding orbits in the potentials proportional to r, r^{-2/3}, r^{-3}, r^{-6}, r^{4/3} and r^{-4}. A degeneracy reduces this to three, which are r^{-1}, r^2 and r^{-4} for the Keplerian case. We present a geometrodynamical method for determining distances to orbital streams of HI gas in the Galaxy. The method makes use of our offset from the Galactic centre and assumes that the gas comprising the stream nearly follows a planar orbit about the Galactic centre. We apply this technique to the Magellanic Stream and determine the distances to all points along it; a consistency check shows that the angular momentum is approximately constant. Applying this technique to the Large Magellanic Cloud itself gives an independent distance which agrees within its accuracy of around 10%. Relaxing the demand for exact conservation of energy and angular momentum at all points along the stream allows for an increase in orbital period between the lagging end and the front end led by the Magellanic Clouds. Similar methods are applicable to other long streams of high-velocity clouds, provided they also nearly follow planar orbits; these would allow otherwise unknown distances to be determined., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures; typos corrected after being accepted by MNRAS

We consider the possibility that the Galactic neutral hydrogen stream Complex A and the stellar Orphan stream are related, and use this hypothesis to determine possible distances to Complex A and the Orphan stream, and line-of-sight velocities for the latter. The method presented uses our current knowledge of the projected positions of the streams, as well as line-of-sight velocities for Complex A, and we show that a solution exists in which the two streams share the same orbit. If Complex A and the Orphan stream are on this orbit, our calculations suggest the Orphan stream to be at an average distance of 20 kpc, with heliocentric radial velocities of approximately -110 km/s. Complex A would be ahead of the Orphan stream in the same wrap of the orbit, with an average distance of 10 kpc, which is consistent with the distance constraints determined through interstellar absorption line techniques., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; typos corrected, fig 2 and numerical predictions updated; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

It is now established that several of the Local Group dwarf Spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) have large mass-to-light ratios. We consider the possibility that the dark matter in the halos of dSphs is composed of massive black holes with masses in the range 10^5 to 10^7 solar masses. We use direct N-body simulations to determine the long term evolution of a two-component dSph composed of a pressure-supported stellar population in a black hole halo. The black holes are initially distributed according to a Navarro, Frenk & White profile. For black hole masses between 10^5 and 10^6 solar masses, the dark matter halo evolves towards a shallower inner profile in less than a Hubble time. This suggests that black holes in this mass range might provide an explanation for the origin of the dark matter cores inferred from observations of Low Surface Brightness galaxy rotation curves. We compare the simulated evolution of the stellar population with observed data for the Draco dSph. The dependence of the heating rate on the black hole mass is determined, and an upper limit of 10^5 solar masses is placed on the individual black holes comprising the dark matter halo of Draco, if its present stellar distribution is representative of the initial one. We also present a simple scaling argument which demonstrates that the dynamical heating of an initially compact, though not self-gravitating, stellar distribution might produce a remnant distribution similar in extent to Draco after 10 Gyr, even for black hole masses somewhat in excess of 10^5 solar masses., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS.
