Abstract

This work presents a printed Ka-band dipole array antenna with wide bandwidth for millimeter-wave communication applications. The operating band of the proposed antenna ranges from 27.8–38.2 GHz exhibiting a wide bandwidth of 10.4 GHz. A balun structure is designed with interlaced U-shaped bending lines on the upper and lower metal layers to feed the dipole differentially. Parasitic trapezoidal patches are exquisitely placed adjacent to the driven dipoles for coupling, which can enhance bandwidth significantly through multiple resonances. The low-frequency radiation is mainly contributed by the resonance of the dipole, while the high-frequency radiation is affected by both the dipole and the parasitic trapezoidal patch. Due to the trapezoidal patch, the equivalent path length of the resonant current becomes shorter, thus supporting high-frequency resonance. A prototype of the proposed 1 × 2 dipole array antenna was fabricated for validation. The measured –10-dB impedance bandwidth is up to 27.8∼38.2 GHz (or 31.5%) and the realized gain is as high as 8 dBi, which is suitable for advanced millimeter-wave communication applications. Abstract

A high‐gain high‐selectivity 4 × 4 metasurface (MS) filtenna array is presented in this paper for 5G millimeter‐wave (mmW) applications. The TE20‐mode substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) with two parallel coupling slots is applied as the differential feeding structure, which can produce a wide impedance bandwidth and good radiation performances, simultaneously. Additionally, the TE20‐mode SIW feeding line is well designed to operate as a λ/2 short‐circuited line at the upper edge frequency to gain a radiation null. Meanwhile, a folded U‐shaped slot is etched on each MS unit to generate a radiation null at the lower edge. As a result, a passband which covers our 5G mmW band (24.25–29.5 GHz) of interest can be realized. To validate the design, a 4 × 4 MS filtenna array was manufactured and measured. The simulated and measured results are in good agreement, demonstrating a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 19.8%, a flat gain variation with a maximum value of 19.82 dBi, symmetrical radiation patterns, low cross‐polarization levels of –30 dB, and high out‐of‐band rejection levels of 25 dB. 9. Millimeter-Wave Compact Wideband High-Gain 8 × 8 CP Filtenna Array With Densified 16-Way SIW Feeding Network

Abstract

This communication presents a millimeter-wave (mmW) compact wideband high-gain $8\times8$ circularly polarized (CP) filtenna array with densified 16-way substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) feeding network. First, a parallel-series $2\times2$ CP patch subarray without a power distribution network is designed by exciting four and two quasi- modes, simultaneously, in a single SIW cavity. By properly setting perturbed via-slot groups, hexagonal radiating apertures, and square patches etched with a 45°-inclined center slot, three axial ratio (AR) minima are created to realize wide AR bandwidth. Additional bandpass filtering response can also be observed, which helps to realize high-selectivity CP filtenna array design. The densified 16-way feeding network mainly consists of four sequentially rotated SIW four-way power dividers, and two filtering SIW TE10-to-TE20 mode two-way power dividers. The former is constructed based on the anti-phase field distribution of TE20 SIW mode, and the latter features an additional filtering response and simple structure. An $8\times8$ CP filtenna array centered at 28 GHz was fabricated and tested. The measured results show a-10dB impedancebandwidth of 14.4%, a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 15.3%, a peak gain of up to 23.9 dBic, and high out-of-band rejection levels better than 39 dB.

Abstract

A 79-GHz wide-beam patch antenna and 1×8 antenna array with low cross-polarization levels are presented for automotive radar applications. A substrate-integrated-waveguide slot-coupled scheme was employed to reduce the cross-polarization level of the patch antenna. Two parasitic elements were added to the main patch to form a three-element subarray for beamwidth enhancement. The simulated E-plane half-power beamwidth (HPBW) of the patch antenna is 148°, and the cross-polarization level is 32.5 dB less than the co-polarization level at the boresight direction. For further gain enhancement, a 1×8 patch array was designed and fabricated. The measured results show that the proposed design can offer a wide HPBW of 144° and a low cross-polarization level of 28.3 dB less than the co-polarization level at 79 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Design of a High-Order 2 × 2 SIW Cavity-Backed Patch Subarray and Its Application in Millimeter-Wave CP Filtenna Array

Abstract

A novel millimeter-wave 2 × 2 substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed patch subarray with a simplified feeding structure is presented. Two higher order SIW cavity modes (quasi-TE410 and quasi-TE330 modes) are designed using eigenmode analysis to support 2 × 2 patches with in-phase radiation. The proposed 2 × 2 patch subarray has multiple resonant modes and a simplified feeding network. Moreover, this subarray can create a radiation null at the upper band edge, which helps to synthesize the filtering response. To verify the potential application in large-scale array, four 2 × 2 subarrays are combined into a 4 × 4 circularly polarized filtenna array with a filtering sequentially rotated feeding network. The measurements of the fabricated filtenna array show an operating bandwidth of 8.9% from 26.6 to 29.1 GHz (|S11| < −10 dB and AR < 3 dB), a peak gain of 15.9 dBic, and stable boresight radiation patterns. Excellent bandpass filtering response with high out-of-band rejection levels of 32 and 48 dB in the lower and upper stopbands, respectively, is observed.

Abstract

A millimeter‐wave broadband E‐plane out‐of‐phase power divider integrated with transition from a rectangular waveguide to substrate integrated waveguides (SIWs), is proposed. Two SIW cavities and two I‐shaped coupling apertures are used to achieve out‐of‐phase or differential signal division with broadband impedance matching. Owing to the symmetrical structure, a pair of differential signals with a phase difference less than 180° ± 0.1° and an amplitude imbalance less than 0.01 dB can be achieved. For measurement, a back‐to‐back test is fabricated and measured in Ka‐band by multilayer PCB fabrication process. The experimental results show that the insertion loss of a single transition is less than 0.65 dB within the 10‐dB impedance bandwidth from 26.9 to 38.6 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
