Abstract

Here, we demonstrate world's first 1 Hz driving fringe‐field switching (FFS) LCD via development of low flexoelectric coefficient LCs with high voltage holding ratio (VHR). The evaluation of the 1 Hz driving 13.4‐inch FFS LCD laptop panel shows no flicker, and the power consumption is reduced by 83% compared to the 60 Hz driving. We believe this result opens a new chapter of FFS LCDs for low‐power consumption.

Abstract

Recently, the driving scheme of a fringe-field switching (FFS) liquid crystal display varies for the best of required performance. Although low-frequency driving can effectively give rise to reduce power consumption in portable displays, proper controlling of liquid crystal director in direct current is challenging. Particularly, under different polarity of applied electric fields, the transmittance difference along the location of electrodes becomes significant, hence giving rise to an image flickering issue. Electrophoretic-based (EP) technology is a leading option for black & white reflective display media, notably for e-Readers. There is great future potential to extend electrophoretic and other colloidal dispersion based displays into a range of new application fields, such as digital signage, wearable displays and 'smart windows'. These new applications require novel particle and fluid concepts, which present many materials design challenges; especially bright colour, image stability and ultra low power consumption. Abstract

In-plane field driven vertical alignment device using a liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy has been studied. In the device, the distance between inter-digital electrodes needs to be increased to achieve higher transmittance; however, such a design results in an increase in operating voltage and slower response time. In this work, we use polymer stabilisation technique, which generates surface tilt angle other than 90o, to improve upon these drawbacks. As a result, the proposed device shows lower operating voltage and faster response time while keeping transmittance at the same level, compared to those prior to polymer stabilisation.
