Search

We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient, EP240408a, by Einstein Probe (EP) and follow-up studies made with EP, Swift, NICER, GROND, ATCA and other ground-based multi-wavelength telescopes. The new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board EP on April 8th, 2024, manifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for 12 seconds. The flare reached a peak flux of 3.9x10^(-9) erg/cm2/s in 0.5-4 keV, about 300 times brighter than the underlying X-ray emission detected throughout the observation. Rapid and more precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT, Swift and NICER confirmed the finding of this new transient. Its X-ray spectrum is non-thermal in 0.5-10 keV, with a power-law photon index varying within 1.8-2.5. The X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for about 4 days, followed by a steep decay till becoming undetectable about 10 days after the initial detection. Based on its temporal property and constraints from previous EP observations, an unusual timescale in the range of 7-23 days is found for EP240408a, which is intermediate between the commonly found fast and long-term transients. No counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared, with the earliest observation at 17 hours after the initial X-ray detection, suggestive of intrinsically weak emission in these bands. We demonstrate that the remarkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far, by comparison with, in particular, jetted tidal disruption events, gamma-ray bursts, X-ray binaries and fast blue optical transients. The nature of EP240408a thus remains an enigma. We suggest that EP240408a may represent a new type of transients with intermediate timescales of the order of about 10 days. LEIA (Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy) detected a new X-ray transient on November 7, 2022, identified as a superflare event occurring on a nearby RS CVn-type binary HD 251108. The flux increase was also detected in follow-up observations at X-ray, UV and optical wavelengths. The flare lasted for about 40 days in soft X-ray observations, reaching a peak luminosity of ~1.1 * 10^34 erg/s in 0.5-4.0 keV, which is roughly 60 times the quiescent luminosity. Optical brightening was observed for only one night. The X-ray light curve is well described by a double "FRED" (fast rise and exponential decay) model, attributed to the cooling process of a loop arcade structure formed subsequent to the initial large loop with a half-length of ~1.9 times the radius of the host star. Time-resolved X-ray spectra were fitted with a two-temperature apec model, showing significant evolution of plasma temperature, emission measure, and metal abundance over time. The estimated energy released in the LEIA band is ~3 * 10^39 erg, suggesting this is likely the most energetic X-ray stellar flare with the longest duration detected to date., Comment: submitted to ApJL, 22 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables

The unluckiest star orbits a supermassive black hole elliptically. Every time it reaches the pericenter, it shallowly enters the tidal radius and gets partially tidal disrupted, producing a series of flares. Confirmation of a repeated partial tidal disruption event (pTDE) requires not only evidence to rule out other types of transients, but also proof that only one star is involved, as TDEs from multiple stars can also produce similar flares. In this letter, we report the discovery of a repeated pTDE, AT 2022dbl. In a quiescent galaxy at $z=0.0284$, two separate optical/UV flares have been observed in 2022 and 2024, with no bright X-ray, radio or mid-infrared counterparts. Compared to the first flare, the second flare has a similar blackbody temperature of ~26,000 K, slightly lower peak luminosity, and slower rise and fall phases. Compared to the ZTF TDEs, their blackbody parameters and light curve shapes are all similar. The spectra taken during the second flare show a steeper continuum than the late-time spectra of the previous flare, consistent with a newly risen flare. More importantly, the possibility of two independent TDEs can be largely ruled out because the optical spectra taken around the peak of the two flares exhibit highly similar broad Balmer, N III and possible He II emission lines, especially the extreme ~4100{\AA} emission lines. Hierarchical massive quadruple systems are ideal laboratories for examining the theories of star formation, dynamical evolution, and stellar evolution. The successive mergers of hierarchical quadruple systems might explain the mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. Looking for light curves of O-type binaries identified by LAMOST, we find a (2+2) quadruple system: TYC 3340-2437-1, located in the stellar bow-shock nebula (SBN). It has a probability of over 99.99\% being a quadruple system derived from the surface density of the vicinity stars. Its inner orbital periods are 3.390602(89) days and 2.4378(16) days, respectively, and the total mass is about (11.47 + 5.79) + (5.2 + 2.02) = 24.48 $M_{\odot}$. The line-of-sight inclinations of the inner binaries, B$_1$ and B$_2$, are 55.94 and 78.2 degrees, respectively, indicating that they are not co-planar. Based on observations spanning 34 months and the significance of the astrometric excess noise ($D>2$) in Gaia DR3 data, we guess that its outer orbital period might be a few years. If it were true, the quadruple system might form through the disk fragmentation mechanism with outer eccentric greater than zero. This eccentricity could be the cause of both the arc-like feature of the SBN and the noncoplanarity of the inner orbit. The outer orbital period and outer eccentric could be determined with the release of future epoch astrometric data of Gaia.

Weak-line quasars (WLQs) are a notable group of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that show unusually weak UV lines even though their optical-UV continuum shapes are similar to those of typical quasars. The physical mechanism for WLQs is an unsolved puzzle in the AGN unified model. We explore the properties of UV emission lines by performing extensive photoionization calculations based on Cloudy simulation with different spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of AGNs. The AGN continua are built from several observational empirical correlations, where the black-body emission from the cold disk, the power-law emission from the hot corona, and a soft X-ray excess component are considered. We find that the equivalent width (EW) of C {\footnotesize IV} from our models is systematically lower than observational values if the component of soft X-ray excess is neglected. The EW will increase several times and is roughly consistent with the observations after considering the soft X-ray excess component as constrained from normal type I AGNs. We find that the UV lines are weak for QSOs with quite large BH mass (e.g., $M_{\rm BH}>10^9M_{\odot}$) and weak soft X-ray emission due to the deficit of ionizing photons. As an example, we present the strength of C {\footnotesize IV} based on the multi-band SEDs for three nearby weak-line AGNs, where the weaker soft X-ray emission normally predicts the weaker lines., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ

The inter-band correlations between optical/UV and X-ray luminosities of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are important for understanding the disc-coronal connection, as well as using AGN as standard candles for cosmology. It is conventional to measure the X-ray luminosity at rest frame 2 keV and compare to the UV luminosity at the rest-frame 2500 \AA, but the wavelength-dependence was never well explored. In this work, we adopt a well-defined sample of 1169 unobscured quasars in the redshift range 0.13 - 4.51, and apply the direct-correlation method to explore how the correlation with the 2 keV luminosity changes at different optical/UV wavelengths, from 1280 - 5550 \AA\ where the spectral quality is high. We find that the luminosity at all UV continuum wavelengths correlates with the X-ray luminosity similarly to that at 2500 \AA, and that these correlations are better than at the optical wavelengths. Strong self-correlation is also found in the broadband optical/UV continuum, supporting the scenario that it is dominated by the disc emission. Correlations of various emission lines are also investigated (e.g. C IV, C III], Mg II, H$\beta$, [O III]$\lambda\lambda 4959/5007$), including the Baldwin effect and correlations involving line-widths. We find the forms of these line correlations are different, and they are also different from their underlying continua, suggesting various complexities in the line-generation process. We discuss these results in the disc-wind scenario. Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been revealed in a large number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and are regarded as promising candidates for AGN feedback on the host galaxy. The nature and launching mechanism of UFOs are not yet fully understood. Here we perform a time- and flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on four XMM-Newton observations of a highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy, Mrk 1044, to study the dependence of the outflow properties on the source luminosity. We find that the UFO in Mrk 1044 responds to the source variability quickly and its velocity increases with the X-ray flux, suggesting a high-density ($10^{9}-4.5\times10^{12}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$) and radiatively driven outflow, launched from the region within a distance of $98-6600\, R_\mathrm{g}$ from the black hole. The kinetic energy of the UFO is conservatively estimated ($L_\mathrm{UFO}\sim4.4\%L_\mathrm{Edd}$), reaching the theoretical criterion to affect the evolution of the host galaxy. We also find emission lines, from a large-scale region, have a blueshift of $2700-4500$ km/s in the spectra of Mrk 1044, which is rarely observed in AGN. By comparing with other sources, we propose a correlation between the blueshift of emission lines and the source accretion rate, which can be verified by a future sample study., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

AT 2019avd is a nuclear transient detected from infrared to soft X-rays, though its nature is yet unclear. The source has shown two consecutive flaring episodes in the optical and the infrared bands and its second flare was covered by X-ray monitoring programs. During this flare, the UVOT/Swift photometries revealed two plateaus: one observed after the peak and the other one appeared ~240 days later. Meanwhile, our NICER and XRT/Swift campaigns show two declines in the X-ray emission, one during the first optical plateau and one 70-90 days after the optical/UV decline. The evidence suggests that the optical/UV could not have been primarily originated from X-ray reprocessing. Furthermore, we detected a timelag of ~16-34 days between the optical and UV emission, which indicates the optical likely comes from UV reprocessing by a gas at a distance of 0.01-0.03 pc. We also report the first VLA and VLBA detection of this source at different frequencies and different stages of the second flare. The information obtained in the radio band - namely a steep and a late-time inverted radio spectrum, a high brightness temperature and a radio-loud state at late times - together with the multiwavelength properties of AT 2019avd suggests the launching and evolution of outflows such as disc winds or jets. In conclusion, we propose that after the ignition of black hole activity in the first flare, a super-Eddington flaring accretion disc formed and settled to a sub-Eddington state by the end of the second flare, associated with a compact radio outflow., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. (Abridged) In this paper, we present the results of an exceptional repeating X-ray nuclear transient, eRASSt J045650.3-203750 (hereafter J0456-20), uncovered by SRG/eROSITA in a quiescent galaxy at redshift of z~0.077. The main results are: 1) J0456-20 cycles through four distinctive phases: an X-ray rising phase leading into an X-ray plateau phase which lasts for ~2 months. This is terminated by a rapid X-ray flux drop phase during which the X-ray flux can drastically drop by more than a factor of 100 within 1 week followed by an X-ray faint state for about two months before it starts the X-ray rising phase again; 2) the X-ray spectra are generally soft in the rising phase with a photon index >3.0, and become harder as the X-ray flux increases. There is evidence of a multi-colour disk with inner region temperature of $T_\text{in}=70$ eV at the beginning of the X-ray rising phase. The high quality XMM-Newton data suggest that a warm and hot corona could be responsible for the X-ray emission, through inverse Comptonisation of soft disk seed photons, during the plateau phase and at the bright end of the rising phase; 3) J0456-20 shows only moderate UV variability and no significant optical variability; 4) radio emission is only detected (as yet) in the X-ray plateau phase, and shows a rapid decline on a time-scale of 2 weeks. We conclude that J0456-20 is likely a repeating nuclear transient with a tentative recurrence time of ~223 days. We discuss several possibilities to explain J0456-20's observational properties, and currently favour a repeating partial tidal disruption event (TDE) as the most likely scenario. The long-term X-ray evolution is explained as a transition between a thermal disk-dominated soft state and a steep power-law state, implying that the corona can be formed within a few months and destroyed within a few weeks., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, published in A&A

RX J0134.2-4258 is one of the most super-Eddington narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, on which we conducted a monitoring campaign from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of its optical/UV spectra and broadband spectral energy distribution (SED). Our study shows that the preferred black hole mass of RX J0134.2-4258 is $M_{\rm BH} \sim 2 \times 10^{7}~M_{\odot}$, giving a mass accretion rate through the outer disc of $\dot{m}_{\rm out} \sim 20$ (assuming zero spin), compared to the observed luminosity ratio $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \sim 6$. This reduction in radiative efficiency is expected for super-Eddington flows, as power can be lost via advection and/or disc winds. We find that the optical/UV lines of RX J0134.2-4258 resemble those from weak-like quasars (WLQs), as it has notably weak C IV and N V emission lines. It also has drastic X-ray variability, again similar to that recently observed in some other WLQs. However, WLQs have systematically higher masses ($\gtrsim 10^8~M_{\odot}$), and lower Eddington ratios ($\dot{m}_{\rm out} \sim 1$) than RX J0134.2-4258. We compare instead to the most extreme NLS1s, with similarly large $\dot{m}_{\rm out}$ but smaller masses. These show similarly large reductions in radiative efficiency but their UV lines are not similarly wind-dominated. We suggest a new category of weak-line Seyfert (WLS) galaxies to describe sources like RX J0134.2-4258, and interpret its (so far unique) properties in a model, where the lower-disc-temperature in the higher-mass black holes leads to the UV-line-driving mechanism, which enhances the super-Eddington radiation-pressure-driven wind., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN) carries crucial information about the X-ray radiation mechanism. We performed a systematic study of the X-ray short-term (1-100 ks timescale) variability for a large sample of 78 Seyferts with 426 deep XMM-Newton observations. In this paper, we present the time-averaged spectra and rms spectra for the entire sample, which show a variety of properties. Based on the spectral shape, we divide the rms spectra into five subtypes and the time-averaged spectra into four subtypes. The most common shape of the rms spectra is concave-down where the rms peaks at $\sim$ 1 keV. We find that different sources can show similar time-averaged spectra and rms spectra. However, there is no one-to-one mapping between the subtypes of the time-averaged spectra and rms spectra, as similar time-averaged spectra can be accompanied by different rms spectra, and vice versa. This is likely because different physical mechanisms can produce similar rms spectra. For every subtype of the time-averaged spectra, we report its preferred subtypes of the rms spectra in both low- and high-frequency bands. We also compare the statistical properties for different subtypes, such as the black hole mass and Eddington ratio. Finally, we investigate the rms in the Fe K$\alpha$ line regime and find that those with a broad and extended red-wing profile tend to show stronger variability than those showing a narrow or relatively symmetric profile. Our results demonstrate the necessity of performing joint spectral and variability modeling in order to understand the mechanism of the X-ray emission in AGN. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are generally considered as the scaled-up counterparts of X-ray binaries (XRBs). It is known that the power spectral density (PSD) of the X-ray emission of XRBs shows significant evolution with spectral states. It is not clear whether AGN follow a similar evolutionary trend, however, though their X-ray emission and the PSD are both variable. In this work, we study a sample of nine AGN with multiple long observations with XMM-Newton, which exhibit significant X-ray spectral variation. We perform Bayesian PSD analysis to measure the PSD shape and variation. We find that a large change in the X-ray energy spectrum (mainly the change of flux state) is often accompanied by a large change in the PSD shape. The emergence of a high-frequency break in the PSD also depends on the spectral state. Among the four sources with significant high-frequency PSD breaks detected, three show the break only in the high-flux state, while the remaining one shows it only in the low-flux state. Moreover, the X-ray rms variability in different spectral states of an AGN is found to vary by as much as 1.0 dex. These results suggest that the different variability properties observed are likely caused by different physical processes dominating different spectral states. We have conducted a new long-term multi-wavelength campaign on one of the most super- Eddington narrow-line Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) known, namely RX J0134.2-4258. In this first paper, we report deep simultaneous X-ray observations performed by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR in 2019-12-19, during which RX J0134.2-4258 was fortuitously at one of its lowest X-ray flux states. However, there is a clear rise above 4 keV which implies that the intrinsic source flux may be higher. The X-ray spectra observed between 1996 and 2019 show drastic variability, probably due to complex, variable absorption along the line of sight. Unusually, the soft X-ray excess appears extremely weak in all these spectra, even when the hard X-ray spectrum has a steep slope of $\Gamma \simeq 2.2$. We explore the spectral-timing properties of the new (low X-ray flux) and archival (high X-ray flux) XMM-Newton data, fitting their time-average, rms and lag spectra simultaneously. The variability spectra indicate the presence of a very weak soft X-ray Comptonisation component, whose shape is similar to the soft excess in normal super-Eddington NLS1s, but with flux relative to the power law which is lower by more than one order of magnitude. Above 4 keV the low-flux data are dominated by a different component, which lags with respect to the lower energy emission. This is consistent with an origin of reflection or partial covering absorption from low ionization material located within 100 Rg. The short-term X-ray variability of tidal disruption events (TDEs) and its similarities with active galactic nuclei (AGN) are poorly understood. In this work, we show the diversity of TDE's short-term X-ray variability, and take Swift J1644+57 as an example to study the evolution of various properties related to the short-term X-ray variability, such as the X-ray flux distribution, power spectral density (PSD), rms variability, time lag and coherence spectra. We find that the flux distribution of Swift J1644+57 has a lognormal form in the normal state, but deviates from it significantly in the dipping state, thereby implying different physical mechanisms in the two states. We also find that during the first two XMM-Newton observations in the dipping state, Swift J1644+57 exhibited different variability patterns, which are characterized by steeper PSDs and larger rms than the normal state. A significant soft X-ray lag is detected in these two observations, which is ~50 s between 0.3-1 keV and 2-10 keV with a high coherence. Using the 2-10 keV rms of 0.10-0.50, the black hole mass of Swift J1644+57 is estimated to be $(0.6-7.9)\times10^{6}M_{\odot}$, but the variation of rms as the TDE evolves introduces a large uncertainty. Finally, we discuss the value of conducting similar studies on other TDEs, especially in the coming era of time-domain astronomy when a lot more TDEs will be discovered in X-rays promptly. A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity. The active galactic nucleus (AGN) RE J1034+396 displays the most significant X-ray Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) detected so far. We perform a detailed spectral-timing analysis of our recent simultaneous XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Swift observations. We present the energy dependence of the QPO's frequency, rms, coherence and phase lag, and model them together with the time-averaged spectra. Our study shows that four components are required to fit all the spectra. These components include an inner disc component (diskbb), two warm corona components (CompTT-1 and CompTT-2), and a hot corona component (nthComp). We find that diskbb, CompTT-2 (the hotter but less luminous component) and nthComp all contain the QPO signal, while CompTT-1 only exhibits stochastic variability. By fitting the lag spectrum, we find that the QPO in diskbb leads CompTT-2 by 679 s, and CompTT-2 leads nthComp by 180 s. By only varying the normalizations, these components can also produce good fits to the time-averaged and variability spectra obtained from previous observations when QPOs were present and absent. Our multi-wavelength study shows that the detectability of the QPO does not depend on the contemporaneous mass accretion rate. We do not detect a significant Iron K{\alpha} emission line, or any significant reflection hump. Finally, we show that the rms and lag spectra in the latest observation are very similar to the 67 Hz QPO observed in the micro-quasar GRS 1915+105. These new results support the physical analogy between these two sources. Aims: Flip-flops are top-hat-like X-ray flux variations which occur in some transient accreting black hole binary systems and feature simultaneous changes in the spectral hardness and the Power Density Spectrum (PDS). They occur at a crucial time in the evolution of these systems, when the accretion disk emission starts to dominate over coronal emission. Flip-flops have only rarely been observed and are poorly understood. Methods: We detect 15 flip-flops in the 2018 outburst of Swift J1658.2-4242, in observations by XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Astrosat, Swift, Insight-HXMT, INTEGRAL, and ATCA. We analyse their light curves, search for periodicities, compute their PDS, and fit their X-ray spectra, to investigate the source behaviour during flip-flop transitions, and how the interval featuring flip-flops differs from the rest of the outburst. Results: The flip-flops of Swift J1658.2-4242 are of an extreme variety, exhibiting flux differences of up to 77% within ~100s, much larger than has been seen so far. We observe radical changes in the PDS simultaneous with the sharp flux variations, featuring transitions between the Quasi-Periodic Oscillation types C and A, which have never been observed before. Changes to the PDS are delayed, but more rapid than changes in the light curve. Flip-flops occur in two intervals, separated by two weeks in which these phenomena were not seen. Transitions between the two flip-flop states occurred at random integer multiples of a fundamental period, of 2.761ks in the first interval, and 2.61ks in the second. Spectral analysis reveals the high and low flux flip-flop states to be similar, but distinct from intervals lacking flip-flops. A change in the inner temperature of the accretion disk is responsible for most of the flux difference in the flip-flops. RE J1034+396 is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) in which the first significant X-ray quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in an active galactic nuclei (AGN) was observed in 2007. We report the detection of this QPO in a recent XMM-Newton observation in 2018 with an even higher significance. The quality factor of this QPO is 20, and its period is 3550 $\pm$ 80 s, which is 250 $\pm$ 100 s shorter than in 2007. While the QPO's period has no significant energy dependence, its fractional root-mean-square (rms) variability increases from 4% in 0.3-1 keV to 12% in 1-4 keV bands. An interesting phenomenon is that the QPO in 0.3-1 keV leads that in the 1-4 keV bands by 430 $\pm$ 50 s with a high coherence, opposite to the soft X-ray lag reported for the observation in 2007. We speculate that the QPO has an intrinsic hard lag, while the previous reported soft lag is caused by the interference of stochastic variability. This soft X-ray lead in the new data supports the idea that the QPO of RE J1034+396 is a possible AGN counterpart of the 67 Hz high-frequency QPO seen in the black hole binary (BHB) GRS 1915+105. We also search for QPO harmonics, but do not find any significant signals. Our new data reinforce previous results that the QPO is seen in a specific spectral state, as the only 2 observations showing no significant QPO signal exhibit an even stronger soft X-ray excess than the other 6 observations which display the QPO. The great power offered by photoionization models of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) emission-line regions has long been mitigated by the fact that very little is known about the spectral energy distribution (SED) between the Lyman limit, where intervening absorption becomes a problem, and 0.3 keV, where soft x-ray observations become possible. The emission lines themselves can, to some degree, be used to probe the SED, but only in the broadest terms. This paper employs a new generation of theoretical SEDs which are internally self-consistent, energy-conserving, and tested against observations, to infer properties of the emission-line regions. The SEDs are given as a function of the Eddington ratio, allowing emission-line correlations to be investigated on a fundamental basis. We apply the simplest possible tests, based on the foundations of photoionization theory, to investigate the implications for the geometry of the emission-line region. The SEDs become more far-ultraviolet bright as the Eddington ratio increases, so the equivalent widths of recombination lines should also become larger, an effect which we quantify. The observed lack of correlation between Eddington ratio and equivalent width shows that the cloud covering factor must decrease as Eddington ratio increases. We present multiwavelength studies of a transient X-ray source, XMMSL1 J131952.3+225958, associated with the galaxy NGC 5092 at $z=0.023$ detected in the XMM-Newton SLew survey (XMMSL). The source brightened in the 0.2--2 keV band by a factor of $>20$ in 2005 as compared with previous flux limits and then faded by a factor of $>200$ as observed with it XMM-Newton in 2013 and with it Swift in 2018. At the flaring state, the X-ray spectrum can be modeled with a blackbody at a temperature of $\sim$ 60 eV and an overall luminosity of $\sim$ $1.5 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. A UV flare and optical flare were also detected with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, respectively, within several months of the X-ray flare, whose nonstellar UV--optical spectrum can be described with a blackbody at a temperature of $\sim$ $(1-2) \times 10^4$ K and a luminosity of $\sim$ $(2-6) \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Interestingly, mid-infrared monitoring observations of NGC 5092 with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer 5--13 yr later show a continuous flux decline. These dramatic variability properties, from the X-ray through UV and optical to infrared, appear to be orderly, suggestive of a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE) by a massive black hole, confirming the postulation by Kanner et al.(2013). This TDE candidate belongs to a rare sample with contemporaneous bright emission detected in the X-ray, UV, and optical, which are later echoed by dust-reprocessed light in the mid-infrared. The black hole has a mass of $\sim$ $5 \times 10^{7} \rm M_{\odot}$, residing in a galaxy that is dominated by a middle-aged stellar population of 2.5 Gyr., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report NuSTAR and Chandra observations of two X-ray transients, SWIFT J174540.7$-$290015 (T15) and SWIFT J174540.2$-$290037 (T37), which were discovered by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in 2016 within $r\sim1$ pc of Sgr A*. NuSTAR detected bright X-ray outbursts from T15 and T37, likely in the soft and hard states, with 3-79~keV luminosities of $8\times10^{36}$ and $3\times10^{37}$ erg/s, respectively. No X-ray outbursts have previously been detected from the two transients and our Chandra ACIS analysis puts an upper limit of $L_X \lesssim 2 \times10^{31}$ erg/s on their quiescent 2-8 keV luminosities. No pulsations, significant QPOs, or type I X-ray bursts were detected in the NuSTAR data. While T15 exhibited no significant red noise, the T37 power density spectra are well characterized by three Lorentzian components. The declining variability of T37 above $\nu \sim 10$ Hz is typical of black hole (BH) transients in the hard state. NuSTAR spectra of both transients exhibit a thermal disk blackbody, X-ray reflection with broadened Fe atomic features, and a continuum component well described by Comptonization models. Their X-ray reflection spectra are most consistent with high BH spin ($a_{*} \gtrsim 0.9$) and large disk density ($n_e\sim10^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$). Based on the best-fit ionization parameters and disk densities, we found that X-ray reflection occurred near the inner disk radius, which was derived from the relativistic broadening and thermal disk component. These X-ray characteristics suggest the outbursting BH-LMXB scenario for both transients and yield the first BH spin measurements from X-ray transients in the central 100 pc region., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

3C 273 is an intensively monitored flat-spectrum radio quasar with both a beamed jet and blue bump together with broad emission lines. The coexistence of the comparably prominent jet and accretion disk leads to complicated variability properties. Recent reverberation mapping monitoring for 3C 273 revealed that the optical continuum shows a distinct long-term trend that does not have a corresponding echo in the Hbeta fluxes. We compile multi-wavelength monitoring data from the Swift archive and other ground-based programs and clearly find two components of emissions at optical wavelength. One component stems from the accretion disk itself and the other component can be ascribed to the jet contribution, which also naturally accounts for the non-echoed trend in reverberation mapping data. We develop an approach to decouple the optical emissions from the jet and accretion disk in 3C 273 with the aid of multi-wavelength monitoring data. By assuming the disk emission has a negligible polarization in consideration of the low inclination of the jet, the results show that the jet contributes a fraction of ~10% at the minimum and up to ~40% at the maximum to the total optical emissions. This is the first time to provide a physical interpretation to the "detrending" manipulation conventionally adopted in reverberation mapping analysis. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is investigated for a well-selected sample composed of $23$ Seyfert 1 galaxies observed simultaneously in the optical/UV and X-ray bands with the Neil Gehrels {\it Swift} Observatory. The optical to UV continuum spectra are modeled, for the first time, with emission from an accretion disk with a generalized radial temperature profile, in order to account for the intrinsic spectra which are found to be generally redder than the model prediction of the standard Shakura-Sunyaev disk (SSD) ($F_\nu\propto\nu^{+1/3}$). The power-law indices of the radial temperature profile ($T_{\rm eff}(R)\propto R^{-p}$, $R$ is the radius of the accretion disk) are inferred to be $p=0.5$ -- $0.75$ (a median of $0.63$), deviating from the canonical $p=0.75$ for the SSD model as widely adopted in previous studies. A marginal correlation of a flatter radial temperature profile (a smaller $p$ value) with increasing the Eddington ratio is suggested. Such a model produces generally a lower peak of accretion disk emission and thus a smaller bolometric luminosity in some of the AGN, particularly those with high Eddington ratios, than that based on the SSD model by a factor of several. The broadband SED, the bolometric correction factors and their dependence on some of the AGN parameters are re-visited. We suggest that such non-standard SSD disks may operate in AGN and are at least partly responsible for the reddened optical/UV spectra as observed. SWIFT J1658.2-4242 is an X-ray transient discovered recently in the Galactic plane, with severe X-ray absorption corresponding to an equivalent hydrogen column density of $N_{\rm H,abs}\sim2\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. Using new Chandra and XMM-Newton data, we discover a strong X-ray dust scattering halo around it. The halo profile can be well fitted by the scattering from at least three separated dust layers. During the persistent emission phase of SWIFT J1658.2-4242, the best-fit dust scattering $N_{\rm H,sca}$ based on the COMP-AC-S dust grain model is consistent with $N_{\rm H,abs}$. The best-fit halo models show that 85-90 percent of the intervening gas and dust along the line of sight of SWIFT J1658.2-4242 are located in the foreground ISM in the Galactic disk. The dust scattering halo also shows significant azimuthal asymmetry, which appears consistent with the inhomogeneous distribution of foreground molecular clouds. By matching the different dust layers to the distribution of molecular clouds along the line of sight, we estimate the source distance to be $\sim$10 kpc, which is also consistent with the results given by several other independent methods of distance estimation. The dust scattering opacity and the existence of a halo can introduce a significant spectral bias, the level of which depends on the shape of the instrumental point spread function and the source extraction region. We create the Xspec dscor model to correct for this spectral bias for different X-ray instruments. We present the analysis of a new near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of a recently discovered $z=6.621$ quasar PSO J006+39 in an attempt to explore the early growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). This NIR (rest-frame ultraviolet, UV) spectrum shows blue continuum slope and rich metal emission lines in addition to Ly$\alpha$ line. We utilize the MgII line width and the rest frame luminosity $L_\text{3000\AA}$ to find the mass of SMBH ($M_\text{BH}$) to be $\sim 10^8 M_\odot$, making this one of the lowest mass quasars at high redshift. The power-law slope index ($\alpha_\lambda$) of the continuum emission is $-2.94\pm0.03$, significantly bluer than the slope of $\alpha_\lambda=-7/3$ predicted from standard thin disc models. We fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) using a model which can fit local SMBHs, which includes warm and hot Comptonisation powered by the accretion flow as well as an outer standard disc. The result shows that the very blue slope is probably produced by a small radial ($\sim230$ gravitational radius, $R_\text{g}$) extent of the standard accretion disc. All plausible SED models require that the source is super-Eddington ($L_\text{bol}/L_\text{Edd} \gtrsim 9$), so the apparently small disc may simply be the inner funnel of a puffed up flow, and clearly the SMBH in this quasar is in a rapid growth phase. We also utilize the rest-frame UV emission lines to probe the chemical abundance in the broad line region (BLR) of this quasar. As a newly discovered class of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the \gamma-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) launch powerful jets which are generally found only in blazars and radio galaxies. However, their black hole (BH) masses as estimated from the broad emission lines are one order of magnitude or more lower than those in blazars. This brings new challenges for explaining the radio loudness triggering in AGNs. It is still under debate whether their BH masses from the commonly used virial method are underestimated. Here we present an estimate of the BH mass for the \gamma-ray detected NLS1 1H 0323+342, an archetype of this class, from the X-ray variability which is inclination independent. Our results independently confirm that this \gamma-ray detected NLS1 harbors a $(2.8-7.9)\times10^6\,M_{\odot}$ BH similar to those in normal NLS1s rather than those in blazars., Comment: Published in ApJ

XMMU J134736.6+173403 is an X-ray source discovered serendipitously by XMM-Newton which was found to be spatially coincident with a pair of galaxies, including a Seyfert 2 galaxy, but presented in 2003 a very sharp persistent flux drop of a factor 6.5 within 1h. From the analysis of a set of 29 Swift observations conducted from the 6 February to the 23 May 2008, we discovered twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with periods of 23.82+-0.07 h and 71.44+-0.57 h. Using a Chandra observation of 2008, we evaluate more accurately the position of the X-ray source and show that the new source coordinates coincide with the position of the Seyfert 2 galaxy. We provide a detailed spectral energy distribution of the AGN counterpart using multi-wavelength observations. The AGN is radio-loud and the broadband SED modelling indicates a black hole with a mass of 9.8x10^6 Msun, that accretes at an Eddington ratio of 0.047. QPOs for active galaxies have been reported so far in only few cases, the most reliable one being from RE J1034+396 for which a 1 h periodicity has been discovered analysing a ~91 ks XMM-Newton observation. Twin peak QPOs with an observed frequency ratio of 3:1 have not been reported so far for any AGN. From resonance models of the epicyclic frequencies we evaluate the different possible mass-spin relations. AX J1745.6-2901 is an eclipsing low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) in the Galactic Centre (GC). It shows significant X-ray excess emission during the eclipse phase, and its eclipse light curve shows an asymmetric shape. We use archival XMM-Newton and Chandra observations to study the origin of these peculiar X-ray eclipsing phenomena. We find that the shape of the observed X-ray eclipse light curves depends on both photon energy and the shape of the source extraction region, and also shows differences between the two instruments. By performing detailed simulations for the time-dependent X-ray dust scattering halo, as well as directly modelling the observed eclipse and non-eclipse halo profiles of AX J1745.6-2901, we obtained solid evidence that its peculiar eclipse phenomena are indeed caused by the X-ray dust scattering in multiple foreground dust layers along the line-of-sight (LOS). The apparent dependence on the instruments is caused by different instrumental point-spread-functions. Our results can be used to assess the influence of dust scattering in other eclipsing X-ray sources, and raise the importance of considering the timing effects of dust scattering halo when studying the variability of other X-ray sources in the GC, such as Sgr A*. Moreover, our study of halo eclipse reinforces the existence of a dust layer local to AX J1745.6-2901 as reported by Jin et al. (2017), as well as identifying another dust layer within a few hundred parsecs to Earth, containing up to several tens of percent LOS dust, which is likely to be associated with the molecular clouds in the Solar neighbourhood. We report on the identification of a new {\gamma}-ray-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy, SDSS J211852.96-073227.5 (hereinafter J2118-0732). The galaxy, at a redshift of 0.26, is associated with a radio source of flat/inverted spectrum at high radio frequencies. The analysis of its optical spectrum obtained in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) revealed a small linewidth of the broad component of the H{\beta} line (full width at half-maximum = 1585 km s^{-1}), making it a radio-loud NLS1 galaxy -- an intriguing class of active galactic nuclei with exceptional multiwavelength properties. A new {\gamma}-ray source centred at J2118-0732 was sporadically detected during 2009--2013 in form of flares by the Fermi-LAT. Our XMM-Newton observations revealed a flat X-ray spectrum described by a simple power law, and a flux variation by a factor of ~2.5 in five months. The source also shows intraday variability in the infrared band. Its broad-band spectral energy distribution can be modelled by emission from a simple one-zone leptonic jet model, and the flux drop from infrared to X-rays in five months can be explained by changes of the jet parameters, though the exact values may be subject to relatively large uncertainties. With the NLS1-blazar composite nucleus, the clear detection of the host galaxy, and the synchronous variations in the multiwavelength fluxes, J2118-0732 provides a new perspective on the formation and evolution of relativistic jets under the regime of relatively small black hole masses and high accretion rates., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, Final version, Published in MNRAS

We present the second and final data release of the Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7). Data are presented for 63 new galaxies not included in the first data release, and we provide 2D emission-line fitting products for the full S7 sample of 131 galaxies. The S7 uses the WiFeS instrument on the ANU 2.3m telescope to obtain spectra with a spectral resolution of R = 7000 in the red (540 - 700 nm) and R = 3000 in the blue (350 - 570 nm), over an integral field of 25x38 arcsec^2 with 1x1 arcsec^2 spatial pixels. The S7 contains both the largest sample of active galaxies and the highest spectral resolution of any comparable integral field survey to date. The emission-line fitting products include line fluxes, velocities and velocity dispersions across the WiFeS field of view, and an artificial neural network has been used to determine the optimal number of Gaussian kinematic components for emission-lines in each spaxel. Broad Balmer lines are subtracted from the spectra of nuclear spatial pixels in Seyfert 1 galaxies before fitting the narrow lines. We bin nuclear spectra and measure reddening-corrected nuclear fluxes of strong narrow lines for each galaxy. The nuclear spectra are classified on optical diagnostic diagrams, where the strength of the coronal line [FeVII]6087 is shown to be correlated with [OIII]/Hbeta. The most rapidly evolving regions of galaxies often display complex optical spectra with emission lines excited by massive stars, shocks and accretion onto supermassive black holes. Standard calibrations (such as for the star formation rate) cannot be applied to such mixed spectra. In this paper we isolate the contributions of star formation, shock excitation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity to the emission line luminosities of individual spatially resolved regions across the central 3 $\times$ 3 kpc$^2$ region of the active barred spiral galaxy NGC$\sim$613. The star formation rate and AGN luminosity calculated from the decomposed emission line maps are in close agreement with independent estimates from data at other wavelengths. The star formation component traces the B-band stellar continuum emission, and the AGN component forms an ionization cone which is aligned with the nuclear radio jet. The optical line emission associated with shock excitation is cospatial with strong $H_2$ and [Fe II] emission and with regions of high ionized gas velocity dispersion ($\sigma > 100$ km s$^{-1}$). The shock component also traces the outer boundary of the AGN ionization cone and may therefore be produced by outflowing material interacting with the surrounding interstellar medium. Our decomposition method makes it possible to determine the properties of star formation, shock excitation and AGN activity from optical spectra, without contamination from other ionization mechanisms., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. We present a detailed multi-wavelength study of an unobscured, highly super-Eddington Type-1 QSO RX J0439.6-5311. We combine the latest XMM-Newton observation with all archival data from infrared to hard X-rays. The optical spectrum is very similar to that of 1H 0707-495 in having extremely weak [O {\sc iii}] and strong Fe {\sc ii} emission lines, although the black hole mass is probably slightly higher at $5-10 \times10^{6}~\rm M_{\odot}$. The broadband SED is uniquely well-defined due to the extremely low Galactic and intrinsic absorption, so the bolometric luminosity is tightly constrained. The optical/UV accretion disc continuum is seen down to 900 \AA, showing that there is a standard thin disc structure down to $R \ge$ 190-380 $R_{\rm g}$ and determining the mass accretion rate through the outer disc. This predicts a much higher bolometric luminosity than observed, indicating that there must be strong wind and/or advective energy losses from the inner disc, as expected for a highly super-Eddington accretion flow. Significant outflows are detected in both the NLR and BLR emission lines, confirming the presence of a wind. We propose a global picture for the structure of a super-Eddington accretion flow where the inner disc puffs up, shielding much of the potential NLR material, and show how inclination angle with respect to this and the wind can explain very different X-ray properties of RX J0439.6-5311 and 1H 0707-495. Therefore, this source provides strong supporting evidence that `simple' and `complex' super-Eddington NLS1s can be unified within the same accretion flow scenario but with different inclination angles. We also propose that these extreme NLS1s could be the low-redshift analogs of weak emission-line quasars (WLQs)., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the results from a recent 133 ks XMM-Newton observation of a highly super-Eddington narrow-line Type-1 QSO RX J0439.6-5311. This source has one of the steepest AGN hard X-ray slopes, in addition to a prominent and smooth soft X-ray excess. Strong variations are found throughout the 0.3 to 10 keV energy range on all time-scales covered by the observation, with the soft excess mainly showing low frequency variations below 0.1 mHz while the hard X-rays show stronger variability at higher frequencies. We perform a full set of spectral-timing analysis on the X-ray data, including a simultaneous modelling of the time-average spectra, frequency-dependent RMS and covariance spectra, lag-frequency and lag-energy spectra. Especially, we find a significant time-lag signal in the low frequency band, which indicates that the soft X-rays lead the hard by $\sim$4 ks, with a broad continuum-like profile in the lag spectrum. Our analysis strongly supports the model where the soft X-ray excess is dominated by a separate low temperature, optically thick Comptonisation component rather than relativistic reflection or a jet. This soft X-ray emitting region is several tens or hundreds of $R_{g}$ away from the hot corona emitting hard X-rays, and is probably associated with a geometrically thick (`puffed-up') inner disc region., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

AX J1745.6-2901 is an X-ray binary located at only 1.45 arcmin from Sgr A*, showcasing a strong X-ray dust scattering halo. We combine Chandra and XMM-Newton observations to study the halo around this X-ray binary. Our study shows two major thick dust layers along the line of sight (LOS) towards AX J1745.6-2901. The LOS position and $N_{H}$ of these two layers depend on the dust grain models with different grain size distribution and abundances. But for all the 19 dust grain models considered, dust Layer-1 is consistently found to be within a fractional distance of 0.11 (mean value: 0.05) to AX J1745.6-2901 and contains only (19-34)% (mean value: 26%) of the total LOS dust. The remaining dust is contained in Layer-2, which is distributed from the Earth up to a mean fractional distance of 0.64. A significant separation between the two layers is found for all the dust grain models, with a mean fractional distance of 0.31. Besides, an extended wing component is discovered in the halo, which implies a higher fraction of dust grains with typical sizes $\lesssim$ 590 \AA\ than considered in current dust grain models. Assuming AX J1745.6-2901 is 8 kpc away, dust Layer-2 would be located in the Galactic disk several kpc away from the Galactic Centre (GC). The dust scattering halo biases the observed spectrum of AX J1745.6-2901 severely in both spectral shape and flux, and also introduces a strong dependence on the size of the instrumental point spread function and the source extraction region. We build Xspec models to account for this spectral bias, which allow us to recover the intrinsic spectrum of AX J1745.6-2901 free from dust scattering opacity. If dust Layer-2 also intervenes along the LOS to Sgr A* and other nearby GC sources, a significant spectral correction for the dust scattering opacity would be necessary for all these GC sources., Comment: 20 pages, published by MNRAS; revised values in Table-1 and Table-B1

We present a simplified model of Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) continuum emission designed for photoionization modeling. The new model {\sc oxaf} reproduces the diversity of spectral shapes that arise in physically-based models. We identify and explain degeneracies in the effects of AGN parameters on model spectral shapes, with a focus on the complete degeneracy between the black hole mass and AGN luminosity. Our re-parametrized model {\sc oxaf} removes these degeneracies and accepts three parameters which directly describe the output spectral shape: the energy of the peak of the accretion disk emission $E_\mathrm{peak}$, the photon power-law index of the non-thermal emission $\Gamma$, and the proportion of the total flux which is emitted in the non-thermal component $p_\mathrm{NT}$. The parameter $E_\mathrm{peak}$ is presented as a function of the black hole mass, AGN luminosity, and `coronal radius' of the {\sc optxagnf} model upon which {\sc oxaf} is based. We show that the soft X-ray excess does not significantly affect photoionization modeling predictions of strong emission lines in Seyfert narrow-line regions. Despite its simplicity, {\sc oxaf} accounts for opacity effects where the accretion disk is ionized because it inherits the `color correction' of {\sc optxagnf}. We use a grid of {\sc mappings} photoionization models with {\sc oxaf} ionizing spectra to demonstrate how predicted emission-line ratios on standard optical diagnostic diagrams are sensitive to each of the three {\sc oxaf} parameters. The optical spectra of Seyfert galaxies are often dominated by emission lines excited by both star formation and AGN activity. Standard calibrations (such as for the star formation rate) are not applicable to such composite (mixed) spectra. In this paper, we describe how integral field data can be used to spectrally and spatially separate emission associated with star formation from emission associated with accretion onto an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We demonstrate our method using integral field data for two AGN host galaxies (NGC 5728 and NGC 7679) from the Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7). The spectra of NGC 5728 and NGC 7679 form clear sequences of AGN fraction on standard emission line ratio diagnostic diagrams. We show that the emission line luminosities of the majority (> 85 per cent) of spectra along each AGN fraction sequence can be reproduced by linear superpositions of the emission line luminosities of one AGN dominated spectrum and one star formation dominated spectrum. We separate the Halpha, Hbeta, [N II]$\lambda$6583, [S II]$\lambda \lambda$6716, 6731, [O III]$\lambda$5007 and [O II]$\lambda \lambda$3726, 3729 luminosities of every spaxel into contributions from star formation and AGN activity. The decomposed emission line images are used to derive the star formation rates and AGN bolometric luminosities for NGC 5728 and NGC 7679. Our calculated values are mostly consistent with independent estimates from data at other wavelengths. The recovered star forming and AGN components also have distinct spatial distributions which trace structures seen in high resolution imaging of the galaxies, providing independent confirmation that our decomposition has been successful., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. We investigate the relative significance of radiation pressure and gas pressure in the extended narrow line regions (ENLRs) of four Seyfert galaxies from the integral field Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7). We demonstrate that there exist two distinct types of starburst-AGN mixing curves on standard emission line diagnostic diagrams which reflect the balance between gas pressure and radiation pressure in the ENLR. In two of the galaxies the ENLR is radiation pressure dominated throughout and the ionization parameter remains constant (log U ~ 0). In the other two galaxies radiation pressure is initially important, but gas pressure becomes dominant as the ionization parameter in the ENLR decreases from log U ~ 0 to -3.4 <= log U <= -3.2. Where radiation pressure is dominant, the AGN regulates the density of the interstellar medium on kpc scales and may therefore have a direct impact on star formation activity and/or the incidence of outflows in the host galaxy to scales far beyond the zone of influence of the black hole. We find that both radiation pressure dominated and gas pressure dominated ENLRs are dynamically active with evidence for outflows, indicating that radiation pressure may be an important source of AGN feedback even when it is not dominant over the entire ENLR., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Relativistic reflection models of the X-ray spectrum of the `complex' Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) 1H 0707-495 require a high spin, moderate inclination, low mass black hole. With these parameters fixed, the observed optical/UV emission directly determines the mass accretion rate through the outer disc and hence predicts the bolometric luminosity. This is $140-260~\times$ the Eddington limit. Such a disc should power a strong wind, and winds are generically expected to be clumpy. Changing inclination angle with respect to a clumpy wind structure gives a possible explanation for the otherwise puzzling difference between `complex' NLS1 such as 1H 0707-495 and `simple' ones like PG 1244+026. Lines of sight which intercept the wind show deep absorption features at iron from the hot phase of the wind, together with stochastic dips and complex absorption when the clumps occult the X-ray source (complex NLS1), whereas both these features are absent for more face-on inclination (simple NLS1). This geometry is quite different to the clean view of a flat disc which is assumed for the spin measurements in relativistic reflection models, so it is possible that even 1H 0707-495 has low spin. If so, this re-opens the simplest and hence very attractive possibility that high black hole spin is a necessary and sufficient condition to trigger highly relativistic (bulk Lorentz factor $\sim 10-15$) jets., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. RX J1140.1+0307 (hereafter RX1140) is a Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) with one of the lowest black hole masses known in an AGN (M ${\le} 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$). We show results from two new {\it XMM-Newton} observations, showing soft 2-10~keV spectra, a strong excess at lower energies, and fast X-ray variability as is typical of this class. The soft excess can be equally well fit by either low temperature Comptonisation or highly smeared, ionised reflection models, but we use a covariance analysis of the fast X-ray variability as well as lag and coherence spectra to show that the low temperature Comptonisation model gives a better description of the break in variability properties between soft and hard X-rays. Both models also require an additional component at the softest energies, as expected from the accretion disc. However, this inner disc spectrum does not join smoothly onto the variable optical and far UV emission (which should be produced in the outer disc) unless the mass is underestimated by an order of magnitude. The variable optical and far UV emission instead suggests that $L/L_{Edd}\sim 10$ through the outer disc, in which case advection and/or wind losses are required to explain the observed broadband spectral energy distribution. However, the similarity of the X-ray properties of RX1140 to other simple NLS1 such as PG 1244+026, RE J1034+396 and RX~J0136 means it is likely that these are also super-Eddington sources. This means their spectral energy distribution cannot be used to determine black hole spin despite appearing to be disc dominated. It also means that the accretion geometry close to the black hole is unlikely to be a flat disc as assumed in the new X-ray reverberation mapping techniques., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures; submitted to MNRAS

We present Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) integral field spectroscopy and HST FOS spectroscopy for the LINER galaxy NGC 1052. We infer the presence of a turbulent accretion flow forming a small-scale accretion disk. We find a large-scale outflow and ionisation cone along the minor axis of the galaxy. Part of this outflow region is photoionised by the AGN, and shares properties with the ENLR of Seyfert galaxies, but the inner ($R \lesssim 1.0$~arcsec) accretion disk and the region around the radio jet appear shock excited. The emission line properties can be modelled by a "double shock" model in which the accretion flow first passes through an accretion shock in the presence of a hard X-ray radiation, and the accretion disk is then processed through a cocoon shock driven by the overpressure of the radio jets. This model explains the observation of two distinct densities ($\sim10^4$ and $\sim10^6$ cm$^{-3}$), and provides a good fit to the observed emission line spectrum. We derive estimates for the velocities of the two shock components and their mixing fractions, the black hole mass, the accretion rate needed to sustain the LINER emission and derive an estimate for the jet power. Our emission line model is remarkably robust against variation of input parameters, and so offers a generic explanation for the excitation of LINER galaxies, including those of spiral type such as NGC 3031 (M81)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal. 16 pages, 12 figures

Here we describe the \emph{Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey} (S7) and present results on 64 galaxies drawn from the first data release. The S7 uses the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) mounted on the ANU 2.3m telescope located at the Siding Spring Observatory to deliver an integral field of $38\times25$~ arcsec at a spectral resolution of $R=7000$ in the red ($530-710$nm), and $R=3000$ in the blue ($340-560$nm). {From these data cubes we have extracted the Narrow Line Region (NLR) spectra from a 4 arc sec aperture centred on the nucleus. We also determine the H$\beta$ and [OIII]~$\lambda$5007 fluxes in the narrow lines, the nuclear reddening, the reddening-corrected relative intensities of the observed emission lines, and the H$\beta$ and \lOIII\ luminosities {determined from spectra for which the stellar continuum has been removed.} We present a set of images of the galaxies in [OIII]~$\lambda$5007, [NII]~$\lambda$6584 and H$\alpha$ which serve to delineate the spatial extent of the extended narrow line region (ENLR) and {\bf also to} reveal the structure and morphology of the surrounding \HII\ regions. Here we present the first results from the Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7) which aims to investigate the physics of ~140 radio-detected southern active Galaxies with z<0.02 through Integral Field Spectroscopy using the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS). This instrument provides data cubes of the central 38 x 25 arc sec. of the target galaxies in the waveband 340-710nm with the unusually high resolution of R=7000 in the red (530-710nm), and R=3000 in the blue (340-560nm). These data provide the morphology, kinematics and the excitation structure of the extended narrow-line region, probe relationships with the black hole characteristics and the host galaxy, measures host galaxy abundance gradients and the determination of nuclear abundances from the HII regions. From photoionisation modelling, we may determine the shape of the ionising spectrum of the AGN, discover whether AGN metallicities differ from nuclear abundances determined from HII regions, and probe grain destruction in the vicinity of the AGN. We have used the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the ANU 2.3m telescope at Siding Spring to observe the nearby, nearly face-on, Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5427. We have obtained integral field spectroscopy of both the nuclear regions and the HII regions in the spiral arms. We have constrained the chemical abundance in the interstellar medium of the extended narrow line region (ENLR) by measuring the abundance gradient in the circum-nuclear \ion{H}{ii} regions to determine the nuclear chemical abundances, and to use these to in turn determine the EUV spectral energy distribution for comparison with theoretical models. We find a very high nuclear abundance, $\sim 3.0$ times solar, with clear evidence of a nuclear enhancement of N and He, possibly caused by massive star formation in the extended ($\sim 100$pc) central disk structure. The circum-nuclear narrow-line region spectrum is fit by a radiation pressure dominated photoionisation model model with an input EUV spectrum from a Black Hole with mass $5\times10^7 M_{\odot}$ radiating at $\sim 0.1$ of its Eddington luminosity. The bolometric luminosity is closely constrained to be $\log L_{\mathrm bol.} = 44.3\pm 0.1$ erg s$^{-1}$. The EUV spectrum characterised by a soft accretion disk and a harder component extending to above 15keV. The ENLR region is extended in the NW-SE direction. The line ratio variation in circum-nuclear spaxels can be understood as the result of mixing \ion{H}{ii} regions with an ENLR having a radius-invariant spectrum., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 14 pages, 13 figures

We explore the origin of the strong soft X-ray excess in Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies using spectral-timing information from a 120ks {\it XMM-Newton} observation of PG 1244+026. Spectral fitting alone cannot distinguish between a true additional soft X-ray continuum component and strongly relativistically smeared reflection, but both models also require a separate soft blackbody component. This is most likely intrinsic emission from the disc extending into the lowest energy X-ray bandpass. The {\it RMS} spectra on short timescales (200-5000s) contain both (non-disk) soft excess and power law emission. However, the spectrum of the variability on these timescales correlated with the 4-10 keV lightcurve contains only the power law. Together these show that there is fast variability of the soft excess which is independent of the 4-10 keV variability. This is inconsistent with a single reflection component making the soft X-ray excess as this necessarily produces correlated variability in the 4-10 keV bandpass. Instead, the {\it RMS} and covariance spectra are consistent with an additional cool Comptonisation component which does not contribute to the spectrum above 2 keV., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, accepted by MNRAS

In this third paper in a series of three, we present a detailed study of the AGN broadband SED based on a nearby unobscured Type 1 AGN sample. We perform a systematic cross-correlation study of the following key parameters: $\Gamma_{2-10keV}$, $L_{2-10keV}$, $L_{bol}$, $L_{bol}/L_{Edd}$, $\kappa_{2-10keV}$, $\kappa_{5100A}$, FWHM$_{H\beta}$, M$_{BH}$, $\alpha_{ox}$, $\alpha_{X}$ and $\alpha_{UV}$, and identify various strong correlations among these parameters. The principal component analysis (PCA) is performed on the correlation matrix of the above parameters, which shows that the three physical parameters, i.e. black hole mass, mass accretion rate and Eddington ratio, drive the majority of the correlations. This is consistent with PCA results found from previous optical spectral studies. We produce various mean SEDs classified by each of the key parameters. Most parameters, except L$_{bol}$, show similar systematic changes in the mean SEDs such that the temperature at which the disc peaks is correlated with the ratio of power in the disc versus the Comptonised components and the hard X-ray spectral index. This underlying change in SED shape shows that AGN do exhibit intrinsically different spectral states. This is superficially similar to the SED differences in BHB seen as $\lambda_{Edd}$ increases, but the analogy does not hold in detail. Only objects with the highest $\lambda_{Edd}$ appear to correspond to a BHB spectral state (the disc dominated high/soft state). The AGN with typical mass accretion rates have spectra which do not match well with any state observed in BHB. We speculate that this could be due to the presence of a powerful UV line driven disc wind, which complicates simple mass scaling between stellar and supermassive black holes., Comment: 36 pages, 26 figures, accepted by MNRAS

(Abridged) Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies have low mass black holes and mass accretion rates close to (or exceeding) Eddington, so a standard blackbody accretion disc should peak in the EUV. However, the lack of true absorption opacity in the disc means that the emission is better approximated by a colour temperature corrected blackbody, and this colour temperature correction is large enough ($\sim 2.4$) that the bare disc emission from a zero spin black hole can extend into the soft X-ray bandpass. Part of the soft X-ray excess seen in these objects must be intrinsic emission from the disc unless the vertical structure is very different to that predicted. However, the soft excess is much broader than predicted by a bare disc spectrum, indicating some Compton upscattering by cool, optically thick material. We associate this with the disc itself, so it must ultimately be powered by mass accretion. We build an energetically self consistent model assuming that the emission thermalises at large radii, but that at smaller radii the gravitational energy is split between powering optically thick Comptonised disc emission (forming the soft X-ray excess) and an optically thin corona above the disc (forming the tail to higher energies). We show examples of this model fit to the extreme NLS1 REJ1034+396, and to the much lower Eddington fraction Broad Line Seyfert 1 PG1048+231. We use these to guide our fits and interpretations of three template spectra made from co-adding multiple sources to track out a sequence of AGN spectra as a function of $L/L_{Edd}$.
