1. Path Following Model Predictive Control of a Coupled Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Abstract

The operation of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) faces challenges in following predetermined waypoints due to coupled motions under environmental disturbances. To address this, a 3D path following guidance and control system is developed in this work based on the line-of-sight (LOS) guidance method. Conventionally, the 3D path following problem is transformed into heading and depth control problems, assuming that the motion of the vehicle is decoupled in horizontal and depth coordinates. The proposed control system design avoids this simplifying assumption by transforming the problem into a 3D position and orientation tracking problem. This design is achieved by computing a 2D horizontal coordinate based on the desired heading and then computing a corresponding LOS depth coordinate. A model predictive controller (MPC) is then implemented using the 3D LOS coordinate and the computed orientation vector. The MPC obtains a robust control by solving a minimax optimisation problem considering the effects of unknown ocean disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed guidance and control system is demonstrated through the simulation of a prototype AUV system. Numerical results show that the AUV can follow predetermined waypoints in the presence of time-varying disturbances, and the system is steered at a constant surge speed that is proportional to the radius of the circle of acceptance used to implement the guidance system., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Presented at the IFAC CAMS 2024, Virginia, USA

7. Evaluation of Usability in Moodle Learning Management System through Analytics Graphs: University of Applied Sciences Teacher's Perspective in Finland

Abstract

The Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (Moodle), a type of Learning Management System (LMS), is growing globally. Across the world, the student population keeps growing, making it challenging for the existing physical infrastructure to accommodate all the students. Despite the enormous potential significance of Analytics Graphs, there needs to be more evidence regarding the utilisation of this Learning Analytics tool to significantly inform management on students' tracking capabilities and consequently improve their performance. This study demonstrates how Learning Analytics tools such as Analytics Graphs enable teachers and management to examine learners' activities in the LMS (e.g., Moodle) by utilising data from the system log to address the existing gap. This study focused on two fundamental questions. What is the usability of the Learning Management System Moodle through Analytics Graphs in the University of Applied Sciences context? Two, how can the Learning Management System Moodle through Analytics Graphs be adapted by educators and maximise its potential? The study employed a quantitative approach and tracked the available log data generated during teaching a marketing course at the University of Applied Sciences for five months (January to May 2022). The analytics graph plugin helps identify student profiles that enables the teachers to know the actual state of the students based on their responses to the activities. This study generates some interesting managerial implications for teachers, students, institutions (Universities) and the e-learning designer or Moodle administrator.

Abstract

Globally, nations are moving away from the usage of fossil fuels toward cleaner energy sources, hydropower is one of the most significant green energy sources to reduce greenhouse gasses. This study aims to select suitable locations for dam construction in Northeastern Nigeria using geospatial analysis for green energy. The Geographic information system and analytical hierarchy process were used to integrate ten thematics layers: geology, soil, slope, elevation, land use, precipitation, flow accumulation, stream power index, topographic wetness index, and drainage density. To generate a suitability model, ten hydro-physical criteria were used and went through several processing steps. AHP was used to rank and weight each criterion. Five classes were identified from the composite suitability map that was generated: very high, high, moderate, low, and very low. Flow accumulation holds the highest importance, followed by rainfall and drainage density, while slope was the least important in determining the suitability of the region. According to the composite suitability map, roughly 38 % of the region is of the highly suitable category, 54.17 % is moderately suitable while the least was highly suitable class with 0.21 %. Among the six states in the region, Taraba state has the highest potential dam site with three sites while the other has one each except Yobe state with none. Millions of people could have access to green energy by building dams in highly practical and economically viable locations identified. GIS is an effective technique for sustainable dam site location.

Abstract

Purpose – Various challenges faced by non-academic personnel in Nigerian institutions, such as a lack of team spirit, inadequate salary, insufficient staff development programs, poor infrastructure, strike actions, insecurity, subpar health insurance, and limited career progression, prompted an examination of their effect on performance at the University of Ilorin. Aims(s) – This research aimed to investigate the influence of compensation structure, career development, and team spirit on the non-academic staff's performance. Design/methodology/approach – With a population of 1,600 and a sample size of 320, as established by Taro Yamane's sample size calculation, the study used a descriptive research approach. A questionnaire was used for data collection, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program was used for basic regression analysis. Findings – The results showed that non-academic staff performance at the public institutions were positively and significantly impacted by compensation structure, career growth, and team spirit. The study successfully determined the impact of trade unionism on non-academic employee performance, emphasizing the positive effects of a sound wage structure, strong team spirit, and career advancement. Limitations of the study – The fact that the results are context-specific represents a major limitation. Originality/value – The results suggested that the public institutions should prioritize and assess team spirit, along with enhancing non-academic personnel's remuneration packages. Furthermore, career advancement was identified as a key factor influencing non-academic staff performance, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities for professional growth and promotion to motivate employees to excel and contribute to the institution's success.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance the cybersecurity framework of pacemaker devices by identifying vulnerabilities and recommending effective strategies. The objectives are to pinpoint cybersecurity weaknesses, utilize machine learning to predict security breaches, and propose countermeasures based on analytical trends. The literature review highlights the transformation of pacemaker technology from basic, fixed-rate devices to sophisticated systems with wireless capabilities, which, while improving patient care, also introduce significant cybersecurity risks. These risks include unauthorized entry, data breaches, and life-threatening device malfunctions. The methodology in this study utilizes a quantitative research approach using the WUSTL-EHMS-2020 dataset, which includes network traffic features, patients' biometric features, and attack label. The step-by-step method of machine learning prediction includes data collection, data preprocessing, feature engineering, and models’ training using Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Gradient Boosting Machines (GBM). The implementation results used evaluation metrics like accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score to show that GBM model outperformed the SVM model. The GBM model achieved higher accuracy of 95.1% compared to 92.5% for SVM, greater precision of 99.6% compared to 96.7% for SVM, better recall of 94.9% compared to 42.7% for SVM, and a higher F1 score of 76.3% compared to 59.0% for SVM, making GBM model more effective in predicting cybersecurity threats. This study concludes that GBM is an effective machine learning model for enhancing pacemaker cybersecurity by analyzing network traffic and biometric data patterns. Future recommendations for improving the pacemaker cybersecurity include implementing GBM model for threat predictions, integration with existing security measures, and regular model updates and retraining.

37. Atrial Myxoma – A Rare Cause of Heart Failure

Abstract

Atrial myxomas are rare cardiac tumors that usually present with diverse, unrelated symptoms. Conversely, heart failure (HF) is a common cardiac disorder that is mostly caused by uncontrolled systemic hypertension. It is a progressive cardiac disease that is managed with guideline directed medical therapy (GDMT). We present the case of a farmer who presented with typical symptoms of HF. Echocardiography however revealed an unusual cause of his symptoms—a huge mass in his left atrium (LA) prolapsing through the mitral valve, causing functional mitral stenosis. The mass is suspected to be an atrial myxoma. Surgical excision of this mass is proposed as the cure, which will obviate the need for continuous use of GDMT. This case report and literature review bring to fore the mechanisms by which atrial myxoma can cause HF and the other varied clinical presentations of atrial myxomas.

38. Bacteriology of Otitis Externa in a Tertiary Health-care Institution in Nigeria

Abstract

Background Otitis externa is the inflammation of the external auditory canal (EAC); it may be acute, subacute, or chronic in nature and the causative agents are usually bacteria, though occasionally fungi. Aim This study aimed to determine the prevalence of bacterial acute otitis externa (AOE) and the pattern of bacterial isolates in AOE. Material and Methods This was a cross-sectional, hospital-based study involving 100 patients with otitis externa. Patients were recruited from ear, nose, and throat (ENT) outpatient clinic using consecutive sampling technique until the required sample size was achieved. The discharge from discharging ears was taken with ear swabs and evaluated for microbial agents. Data analysis was done using SPSS-IBM version 25. Results A total of 100 patients were recruited; the patients aged from 4 to 57 years (mean age is 18.78 ± 10.67) years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1.1. One hundred and twenty-four external ear discharge samples were cultured among 100 study groups, of which bacteria was isolated in 77 (62.1%) and no bacterial agent was isolated in 47 (37.1%). Pseudomonas aeruginosa 32 (41.6%) was the most common bacteria isolated, followed by Staphylococcus aureus – 13 (16.9%); others include Proteus mirabilis – 7 (9.0%), Escherichia coli – 4 (5.2%), Streptococcus pneumonia – 4 (5.2%), Klebsiella pneumoniae – 3 (3.9%), Streptococcus pyogenes – 3 (3.9%), and Enterobacter aerogenes – 2 (2.6%). Conclusion Otitis externa affects all age groups and genders; bacteria are a more prevalent causative agent. The common predisposing factors are the use of objects in scratching or cleaning EAC, use of earpiece, and swimming. The prevalence of bacterial otitis externa was 7.1%, and Gram-negative aerobes are the most prevalent.

Abstract

Abstract Background Quarantine and isolation (Q&I) are interrelated but not mutually exclusive public health practices for disease control, which may face public resistance in the context of health emergencies due to associated challenges. Hence, it is often tough for most countries to implement Q&I even in the context of health emergencies. Therefore, this scoping review examines the challenges associated with the implementation of institutional Q&I strategies during major multicountry viral outbreaks (Ebola, Lassa and COVID-19) in Africa between 2000 and 2023. Methods This scoping review was designed based on Arksey and O’Malley’s guidelines. A systematic literature search, using nine online research databases, was conducted with the aid of relevant search terms, Boolean operators and truncations. All articles obtained from the literature search were electronically imported into Rayyan web application for deduplication based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the included literature, relevant data were charted, summarized, collated, and presented. Results This review included 24 of the 787 retrieved articles. Sixteen of the 24 selected articles investigated issues related to COVID-19 prevention and control in Africa. Two assessed precautionary practices for Lassa fever, while five were on Ebola virus disease. However, one article explored knowledge, preventive practices, and general isolation precautions. The review identified various challenges that hindered the implementation of successful Q&I practices during viral infection outbreaks in Africa. Essential healthcare infrastructure, equipment (medical supplies including personal protective equipment and testing kits) and facilities that are essential for Q&I were deficient. Q&I implementation was often threatened by low human resource capacity and inefficiencies in the healthcare system which portray Africa as unprepared to handle complex public health crises. Conclusions This review shows that Q&I implementation in Africa is often threatened by low human resource capacity and inefficiencies in the healthcare system and also portrays Africa as unprepared to handle complex public health crises. Hence, Q&I for major multicountry outbreaks in Africa is very challenging. Therefore, continuous efforts to address these identified challenges are crucial to enhancing health emergency preparedness in Africa.

Abstract

Abstract Background In 2022, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collaborated with implementing partners, African Field Epidemiology Network and Sydani Group, to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts in Nigeria. To characterize the costs of COVID-19 vaccination, this study evaluated financial costs per dose for activities implemented to support the intensification campaign for COVID-19 vaccination. Methods This retrospective evaluation collected secondary data from existing expenditure and programmatic records on resource utilization to roll out COVID-19 vaccination during 2022. The study included incremental financial costs of the activities implemented to support an intensification campaign for COVID-19 vaccination across nine states and six administrative levels in Nigeria from the perspective of the external donor (U.S. Government). Costs for vaccines and injection supplies, transport of vaccines, and any economic costs, including government in-kind contributions, were not included. All costs were converted from Nigerian Naira to 2022 U.S. Dollars (US$). Results The estimated financial delivery cost of the COVID-19 vaccination intensification campaign was US$0.84 per dose (total expenditure of US$6.29 million to administer 7,461,971 doses). Most of the financial resources were used for fieldwork activities (86%), followed by monitoring and supervision activities (8%), coordination activities (5%), and training-related activities (1%). Labor (58%) and travel (37%) were the resource inputs that accounted for the majority of the cost, while shares of other resource inputs were marginal (1% for each). Most labor costs (79%) were spent on payments for mass vaccination campaign teams, including pay-for-performance incentives. Abstract

Anambra and Gongola basins are part of the sedimentary inland basins in Nigeria characterized by fossil fuels and in response to its present energy problem, Nigeria has shifted its power generating focus to coal. The studied coals were obtained from two localities, namely Ankpa and Maiganga in Kogi and Gombe States, respectively. The coals were investigated to determine its quality in terms of use and resource potential. The coals were analyzed by proximate, ultimate, elemental, mineralogy and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry analyses. The objectives of the study are to determine the coals cokability, rank, paleoenvironments, hydrocarbon potential, and slagging tendency. The average values of moisture content, ash, volatile matter, and fixed carbon are 5.54%, 16.42%, 48.45%, and 30.71%, respectively, for Ankpa coals, while Maiganga recorded 10.68%, 8.60%, 44.33%, and 36.41%, indicating high volatile sub-bituminous non-coking coals that are optimum for combustion and electric power generation. The Van Krevelen plot based on the H/C vs. O/C showed Type IV kerogen. The XRD results, correlation plots, and Detrital Authigenic Index (DAI) values of 7.49 and 13.49 in Ankpa and Maiganga coals, respectively, indicated that Ankpa coals are enriched in authigenic minerals like quartz, pyrite, and calcite, while kaolinite and quartz were probable detrital minerals in the Maiganga coals. The agglomeration of the coals deduced by Base/Acid (B/A), Silicon ratio (G), Silica/Alumina (S/A), Iron/Calcium (I/C), Carbon/Hydrogen (C/H), and Fixed Carbon/Volatile matter (FC/V) showed weak–medium-strong for the Ankpa coals and strong for Maiganga coals.

42. Anomaly Detection in Power Generation Plants with Generative Adversarial Networks

Abstract

Anomaly detection is a critical task that involves the identification of data points that deviate from a predefined pattern, useful for fraud detection and related activities. Various techniques are employed for anomaly detection, but recent research indicates that deep learning methods, with their ability to discern intricate data patterns, are well-suited for this task. This study explores the use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for anomaly detection in power generation plants. The dataset used in this investigation comprises fuel consumption records obtained from power generation plants operated by a telecommunications company. The data was initially collected in response to observed irregularities in the fuel consumption patterns of the generating sets situated at the company's base stations. The dataset was divided into anomalous and normal data points based on specific variables, with 64.88% classified as normal and 35.12% as anomalous. An analysis of feature importance, employing the random forest classifier, revealed that Running Time Per Day exhibited the highest relative importance. A GANs model was trained and fine-tuned both with and without data augmentation, with the goal of increasing the dataset size to enhance performance. The generator model consisted of five dense layers using the tanh activation function, while the discriminator comprised six dense layers, each integrated with a dropout layer to prevent overfitting. Following data augmentation, the model achieved an accuracy rate of 98.99%, compared to 66.45% before augmentation. This demonstrates that the model nearly perfectly classified data points into normal and anomalous categories, with the augmented data significantly enhancing the GANs' performance in anomaly detection. Consequently, this study recommends the use of GANs, particularly when using large datasets, for effective anomaly detection.

Abstract

Pelargonium quercifolium is an aromatic herb with a strong resinous scent. It is used traditionally to treat heart disease, hypertension, stress, rheumatism, combat hidden hunger, and inhibit HIV-1. The present study aimed to evaluate the toxicity, anti-HIV, antioxidant nutrients and anticancer potentials of the ethanol extract of P. quercifolium. In this study, high-resolution ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-D AD), xCELLigence real-time cell analyser single plate (RTCA-SP), MTT assays and luciferase-based assay were employed to elucidate the phytochemicals, cytotoxicity, anti-HIV, antioxidant nutrients and anticancer metabolites in P. quercifolium. Results show that the characterized metabolites in P. quercifolium most of which were flavonoids, phenolic derivatives, alkaloids and coumarins could arrest cancer cell proliferation and inhibit HIV infection given the high level of cytotoxicity of the tested plant extract. It was also observed and reported for the first time, the nutrient profile of P. quercifolium is higher than most vegetables consumed as a staple food. This study underpins the potential of using anticancer and antiviral metabolites from leaf extract of P. quercifolium as a pharmacological option.

Background: Consumption of Cannabis sativa (CS) (Marijuana), a well-known psychoactive substance may impose serious side effects on the body cells. Abstract

Context: The mucociliary clearance system is an important component in the prevention of chronic inflammation of the nasal and paranasal sinus. Aim: The study aims to establish the normal values of mucociliary clearance in our region and to study the variation in mucociliary activity in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis in Ilorin, North-central Nigeria. Settings and Design: This was a prospective, cross-sectional study using consecutive consenting participants in both the control and study groups carried out at both family medicine and otorhinolaryngology clinics among patients attending the clinics. Subjects and Methods: After ethical approval was sought, informed consent was obtained from patients, a modified version of the validated health questionnaire was filled, semi-structured questionnaires were also filled after which patient undergo anterior rhinoscopy, nasal patency test and spirometry was done. The saccharine test has been used to measure nasal-mucociliary clearance time in the past. Statistical Analysis: All information were entered into SPSS version 20 and analysed descriptively, and results were presented in tables and figures. Results: Consecutive consenting 125 patients with rhinosinusitis (study group) and those without rhinosinusitis (control group) underwent naso-mucociliary clearance test. There were 34 males and 91 females with a male:female ratio of 1:2.6 among the study group and 55 males and 70 females with a male:female ratio of 1:1.3 for the control group. The age range was from 18 to 68 years with 18–40 years constituting the modal age group. The mean age for the studied group was 35.7 years while that of the control group was 33.1 years. The mean naso-mucociliary clearance time among the study group was 35.1 min standard deviation (SD = 12.32 ± 1.63), while among the control group, it was 14.8 min (SD = 5.59 ± 0.43). Conclusion: Compared to the control group, there was a roughly 200% prolonged increase in the duration of naso-mucociliary clearance time among patients with rhinosinusitis. There was also a positive correlation with increasing age. Future studies comparing the pre-operative and post-operative treatment of rhinosinusitis will contribute to knowledge.
