3. A Virtual Reality Learning Environment to Support Students' Abilities to Extract, Represent, and Predict Stereochemical Outcomes for the Diels-Alder Reaction

Abstract

At the molecular level, chemical processes involve the rearrangement of atoms in space and time. Students often struggle with visualizing the 3D spatial characteristics of molecules and transition states, as well as recognizing the dynamic nature of chemistry. Both visual spatial skills and representational competence should be explicitly trained to avoid misconceptions regarding how molecules approach each other in space, and how chemical reactions occur in time. Visual spatial skills and representational competence are critical in the path to master organic chemistry. This is especially true for visually demanding reactions involving several stereocenters such as the Diels-Alder reaction. This project was focused on the development of a Virtual Reality Learning Environment (VRLE) where students could practice their spatial skills while acquiring representational competence, to support their ability to extract, represent, and predict stereochemical outcomes for the Diels-Alder reaction. This dissertation begins with the compilation and operationalization of a network of pedagogical frameworks that support and reinforce each other synergistically to ground the design and development of a VRLE. From the frameworks compiled, a model was created to recognize 3D characteristics from 2D representations of transition states, centered on the use of a hexagonal prism as an external reference frame. Following the description of the applications and limitations of the Hexagonal Prism Reference Model (HPRM), this project describes the technical and mathematical considerations that were necessary to build the VRLE, as well as a novel tool to convert computational chemistry calculations into formats compatible with 3D modeling software. Finally, a qualitative study was conducted to compare visual spatial skills, challenges and strategies between graduate and undergraduate students as they extract, represent, and predict stereochemical outcomes for the Diels-Alder reaction. Therein, a profile of the most prominent visual spatial skills for both groups was described. Afterwards, this study described how multiple and simultaneous visual spatial skills compose different spatial strategies and how these strategies were applied to visualize Diels-Alder reaction outcomes. A set of spatial difficulties and an optical illusion were characterized. The results revealed the importance of Visual Orientation and Visual Discrimination to recognize spatial characteristics, identify accurate representations, and predict stereochemical outcomes. 5. Gaussian-2-Blender: An Open-Source Program for Conversion of Computational Chemistry Structure Files to 3D Rendering and Printing File Formats

Abstract

Gaussian-2-Blender is an open-source application programming interface (API) written in Python that allows for the conversion of Gaussian input files to 3D objects of different formats. This new tool was developed in response to the shortcomings of available programs to import Gaussian calculations into augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) applications, which are currently rising in numbers. Gaussian-2-Blender's distinguishing features include: (1) molecule renderings with proportional, scaled, and accurate atomic and ionic sizes; (2) rendering transient, hydrogen, and delocalized bonds; (3) batch conversion of multiple files; and (4) retention of Gaussian input numerical labels. These features are either not supported or difficult to achieve in other programs. The following report describes the key features of the tool and provides a comparison between this new tool and available programs.

Abstract

This monograph summarizes the results of a World Bank research project that compared private and public secondary school costs and achievement in five developing countries--Columbia, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Thailand. All the case studies address the question: Would a high school student, selected at random from the general student population, perform better in a public or private school? In the absence of experimental data, the studies compare students' performance on standardized tests in a cross-section of public and private schools. Student background, motivation, innate ability, and prior performance are controlled through the use of various statistical techniques. The report also compares the costs of public and private schools. The principal findings include: (1) although students in private schools come from more privileged families than those in public schools, on average, there is a significant overlap between the two groups; (2) with student background and selection bias held constant, students in private schools out-perform students in public schools on a variety of achievement tests; (3) unit costs of private schools are lower than those of public schools; and (4) private schools are organized for greater school-level decision making and emphasis on enhancing student achievement; this seems to affect the mix of inputs that private versus public schools choose. Implications for policy include: (1) over-restrictive regulations on private schools may be suppressing an efficient way to provide education; (2) in some cases, governments could encourage greater private sector participation in education; and (3) public schools could emulate at least some of the teaching and administrative practices of their private counterparts. Abstract

Objective: The bilateral presentation of Carotid Body Tumors (CBT) is rare; the surgical resection of these masses remains the mainstay management due to the malignant potential. We aim to describe, classify, and quantify baroreceptor failure (BRF) after the surgical management of patients with bilateral CBT to better understand the clinical consequences. Methods: Retrospective review of patients that underwent bilateral CBT resection to assess the changes in baroreceptor function. We describe the clinical events associated to BRF after surgery, baseline patient's demographics, characteristics, comorbidities. Additionally, clinical and a quantitative evaluation of baroreceptor sensitivity were conducted using the Composite Autonomic Severity Score (CASS). Results: From 1986 to 2020, a total 146 CBT resections were performed in 132 patients in our institution. Tumors were removed bilaterally in staged procedures in seven patients with a mean age of 61 years (Standard Deviation 11), six (85%) were females, and there was no family history of paragangliomas. The clinical presentation were palpable masses in 5 (71%), and odynophagia in 2 (29%) cases; malignant histopathology following surgery was found in one case. BRF occurred in one patient after unilateral CBT resection, consisting of bradycardia and a 40 s asystole that was not previously associated to BR sensitivity. Three (43%) patients presented BRF in the immediate postoperative period of the contralateral CBT excision, consisting of volatile hypertensive crisis in two cases, and supraventricular tachycardia in one. All the patients developed (100%) chronic baroreceptor sensitivity symptoms consisting in syncope, vertigo and fatigue in 4 (57%), tachycardia in 2 (28%), and orthostatic headache in one (14%). Autonomic testing showed mixed sympathetic and parasympathetic failure in five (71%), severe sympathetic failure in 1 (14%), and parasympathetic dysfunction in one patient (14%). Conclusions: Postoperative autonomic assessment confirmed BRF in all studied patients that underwent staged bilateral CBT resection with mixed, sympathetic, and parasympathetic dysfunction. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the incidence and physiological mechanisms of these sequelae to anticipate possible complications and offer the appropriate perioperative management. Abstract

Annona muricataL., Annonaceae, is extensively used in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes mellitus, and as antitumor. The ethanol extract of the leaves from A. muricatawas suspended in 10% ethanol water and fractionated by organic solvent extraction with chloroform. The chloroform and aqueous residual fractions were tested for antiprotozoal, antipropulsive, antihyperglycemic, and antilymphoma activities, as well as brine shrimp lethality. While for the antiprotozoal, antilymphoma, and antihiperglycemic activities as well as brine shrimp lethality the chloroform fraction was the most active, the aqueous residual fraction provided better result for the antipropulsive activity. The aqueous residual and chloroform fractions were purified by chromatographic methods to give rutin, nicotinflorin, narcissin, and cis-reticulatacin, as well as β-sitosterol.

This paper documents the importance of continued investment in basic education and argues that investments need to be carefully targeted to address the constraints that limit the coverage and quality of education if they are to provide expected benefits. Part I begins with a discussion of the returns to investment in education. Part II then describes gaps in the coverage and quality of basic education and evaluates some key constraints responsible for those gaps. The conclusion offers a set of recommendations for planning and implementing effective investments in basic education, based on the lessons of global experience. Abstract

Fiscal constraints have limited education budgets in developing countries. Increases necessary to expand access to highly subsidized and publicly provided education have not been forthcoming. Another concern is that education is being inadequately and inefficiently provided by the public sector. This study is an inquiry into the nature of the achievement differential between public and private schools in Colombia and Tanzania. It questions the extent to which the differential in academic achievement can be attributed to student characteristics rather than school inputs, attempts to estimate the quality differences between the public and private secondary schools in these two countries, as measured by student performance on the achievement tests (ACATESTs). Estimated sample-selection effects suggest that Colombian students sort themselves by type of institution, public or private; but Tanzanian students are selected by a hierarchical mechanism, with the lowest-scoring students entering private institutions. These effects are consistent with the different institutional frameworks for educational choice in these two countries. For each country, however, private schools offer an achievement advantage. By standardizing for differences in student and school attributes, private school students have higher achievement test scores. (Author/NL)

Abstract

This paper measures the effects on student outcomes of decentralizing educational responsibility to communities and schools. In El Salvador, community-managed schools emerged during the 1980s when public schools could not be extended to rural areas because of the country's civil war. In 1991, El Salvador's Ministry of Education decided to draw on this prototype to expand preprimary and primary education in rural areas through the EDUCO program (Educacion con Participacion de la Comunidad). The present EDUCO schools are each managed autonomously by a community education association elected from among the parents of students. The associations take a central role in administration and management. They are also responsible for contracting teachers and maintaining schools. Drawing on a national survey of schools, 38 EDUCO schools and 154 traditional rural schools were compared for third-graders' achievement on standardized tests of mathematics, language and school days missed due to teacher absence. Analysis controlled for student characteristics and selection bias, using an exogenously-determined formula for targeting EDUCO schools as an instrumental variable. Findings indicate that the rapid expansion of rural schools through EDUCO has not adversely affected student achievement yet has diminished student absences due to teacher absences. Earnings functions have been widely used to estimate the returns to education and training. Many studies have relied on the Mincerian specification for the earnings function, which embodies several assumptions. A study of Brazilian workers' wages finds that the Mincerian specification yields upwardly biased estimates of the returns to education, particularly primary schooling. (15 references) (MLH)
