This report presents the results of a study undertaken in 2020 on the impact that Fairtrade had on businesses and Fairtrade consumer markets for bananas, cocoa, and coffee in the Global North. Commissioned by Fairtrade International, in collaboration with a number of National Fairtrade Organisations (NFO) and Fairtrade Marketing Organisations (FMO) and with financial support from the European Union (EU), it sought to explore: how Fairtrade might maximize demand and positive producer impact through its supply chain and business engagement?The results presented in this report are based on quantitiative analysis of a database of 932 certified traders and licencees, and semi-structuredinterviews with certified traders, licensees, employees of Fairtrade organisations and consumer experts in six European Countries (Czech Republic,Finland, France, Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom). These primary data are triangulated with secondary data from four different domains of the Fairtrade System: the producer domain, the business domain, the consumer domain, the standards/certification domain. We also conductedparticipant observations and informal interviews during trade fairs.

Researchers from LISIS conducted a mixed-methods-based study to analyze how the Fairtrade Premium has been used by Fairtrade organizations and how it generates benefits for Fairtrade producers and their communities. Five cases were explored: a coffee/cocoa small-scale producer organization (SPO) in Peru, a cocoa SPO in Côte d'Ivoire, a banana SPO in Ecuador, a banana SPO in Peru and a flower plantation in Kenya. Using a combination of analysis of data from literature and the case studies, the researchers looked at four characteristics of Fairtrade Premium -- use, participation, accountability, and function -- as well as barriers and enablers for effective Premium use. Finally, the researchers analysed the pathways from Premium investment to six Fairtrade impacts (related to income, gender equality, environmental sustainability, dignity and voice for producers, transparency, and fairness and sustainability of business practices, policy and societal norms). The study provides insights that can enable farmers and workers to make transparent and informed decisions about their Premium use.

The purpose of this study is to explore whether and how products from agroecological production systems are being valued in markets. The study is based on a meta-analysis of 12 case studies (Benin, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Kazakhstan, Mozambique, Namibia, Uganda), mainly from developing and emerging countries and one developed country. The publication provides a unique approach to understanding how markets are constructed for agroecological products, while at the same time supporting small-scale actors in their existing initiatives for producing and marketing their products from agroecology, in order to contribute to more sustainable food systems.

Increasingly, producers and consumers are opting for agroecological practices as the foundation for sustainable food systems and better living conditions. However, there is no empirical evidence that shows how different actors in market exchanges perceive ‘agroecological qualities’ or the valuation process used to create value. Analytically, this takes into account actors’ definitions of agroecological food’ and exploring how these same actors explain their desired qualities for ‘agroecological food’. The analysis focuses on the interfaces between communication about quality and price, actors’ perceptions of fairness in price creation, proximity relationships in networks and the market outlets for agroecological products. Together, these activities can be seen as part of a valuation for agroecological products. This paper draws upon two case studies of Participatory Guarantee Systems in Bolivia and Colombia. Results indicate that despite the recognition of agroecological concepts in the definition of agroecology, consumers and intermediaries prioritize sensory attributes when seeking products in the market. Personal communication between actors in markets was recognized as the principal medium through which agroecological qualities were communicated and valued. However, not all actors were active agents in the valuation process. Proximity markets such as on-farm sales and farmers’ markets generated prices were perceived as fair.

International audience; Through its international and regional symposia, FAO has recognized the important role of agro-ecological production systems in the development of sustainable food systems. However, there is little understanding of how agro-ecologically produced crops become marketable products that are recognized by consumers for their agro-ecological qualities. In 2015, FAO and INRA conducted a qualitative survey with producers, consumers and intermediaries from 12 countries (Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Kazakhstan, Mozambique, Namibia and Uganda) to gain insights into this question. Through this study, we identified a typology of markets that are based on different levels of interaction among actors in a food system, the inclusiveness of the business model, the number of times the product changes hands, the fairness of prices, the means of quality communication and the identification of quality attributes themselves. In this presentation, we present the results of this study by explaining these typologies of ”agro-ecological” markets in developing countries.

Las áreas silvestres protegidas (ASP) ubicadas en la zona centro-sur de Chile (Región Metropolitana - Región de la Araucanía) conforman un relicto de conservación inserto en la matriz agronómica y silvicultural de esta zona. Comparamos la diversidad taxonómica de especies nativas e introducidas de nueve sitios en ASP y su matriz adyacente, en orillas de camino y hábitats de interior. Encontramos 353 especies nativas y 120 introducidas. La mayor diversidad de introducidas se concentra en la matriz adyacente a las ASP y en las orillas de caminos. Las especies nativas no presentan diferencias en riqueza entre la matriz y las ASP. Especies introducidas y nativas se agrupan de acuerdo al gradiente climático. La mayor riqueza y abundancia de especies introducidas se concentra en las familias Poaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Polygonaceae y Rosaceae. Las ASP que presentan una mayor cantidad de especies introducidas son aquellas que presentan un mejor acceso y mayor número de visitantes. Las ASP estarían cumpliendo su función de protección de la flora silvestre al mantener un bajo número de especies introducidas. Natural protected areas (ASP) located in the south-central Chile (Región Metropolitana - Región de la Araucanía) are a conservation relict embedded in agricultural and silvicultural matrices. We compared the taxonomic diversity of native and introduced species in nine sites on ASP and their adjacent matrices, in roadsides and interior habitats. We found 353 species native and 120 introduced. The greater diversity of introduced is concentrated in the matrix adjacent to the ASP and on roadsides. Native species do not differ between the matrix and the ASP. Introduced and native species are grouped according to the climatic gradient. The greater richness and abundance of introduced species is concentrated in the families Poaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Polygonaceae and Rosaceae. The ASP having a higher amount of introduced species are those that have a greater access and visitor numbers. The ASP would be fulfilling its role of protecting wild flora to maintain a low number of introduced species.
