Probing and manipulating the spatiotemporal dynamics of hot carriers in nanoscale metals is crucial to a plethora of applications ranging from nonlinear nanophotonics to single molecule photochemistry. The direct investigation of these highly non-equilibrium carriers requires the experimental capability of high energy resolution (~ meV) broadband femtosecond spectroscopy. When considering the ultimate limits of atomic scale structures, this capability has remained out of reach until date. Using a two color femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we present here the real-time tracking of hot carrier dynamics in a well-defined plasmonic picocavity, formed in the tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The excitation of hot carriers in the picocavity enables ultrafast all optical control over the broadband (~ eV) anti Stokes electronic resonance Raman scattering (ERRS) and the four-wave mixing (FWM) signals generated at the atomic length scale. By mapping the ERRS and FWM signals from a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR), we demonstrate that both signals are more efficiently generated along the edges of the GNR: a manifestation of atomic-scale nonlinear optical microscopy. This demonstration paves the way to the development of novel ultrafast nonlinear picophotonic platforms, affording unique opportunities in a variety of contexts, from the direct investigation of non equilibrium light matter interactions in complex quantum materials, to the development of robust strategies for hot carriers harvesting in single molecules and the next generation of active metasurfaces with deep-sub-wavelength meta-atoms.

The capability to excite, probe, and manipulate vibrational modes is essential for understanding and controlling chemical reactions at the molecular level. Recent advancements in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopies have enabled the probing of vibrational fingerprints in a single molecule with Angstrom-scale spatial resolution. However, achieving controllable excitation of specific vibrational modes in individual molecules remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the selective excitation and probing of vibrational modes in single deprotonated phthalocyanine molecules utilizing resonance Raman spectroscopy in a scanning tunneling microscope. Selective excitation is achieved by finely tuning the excitation wavelength of the laser to be resonant with the vibronic transitions between the molecular ground electronic state and the vibrational levels in the excited electronic state, resulting in the state-selective enhancement of the resonance Raman signal. Our approach sets the stage for steering chemical transformations in molecules on surfaces by selective excitation of molecular vibrations.

Plasmonic nanoantennas, metallodielectric structures with engineered size and shape, have attracted much attention lately as they make the control of the directionality and temporal characteristics of light emitted by fluorophores possible. Nanoantennas exploit light-matter interactions mediated by Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances and, so far, have been demonstrated using metallic nanoparticles or other metallic nanostructures. Plasmonic picocavities, i.e., plasmonic cavities with mode volumes below 1 cubic nanometer, could act as antennas to mediate light-matter interaction even more efficiently than their nanoscale counterparts due to their extreme field confinement, but the directionality on their emission is difficult to control. In this work, we show that the plasmonic picocavity formed between the tip of a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope and a metal surface with a monoatomic step shows directional emission profiles and, thus, can be considered as a realization of a picoantenna. Comparison with electromagnetic calculations demonstrates that the observed directionality arises from light emission tilting of the picocavity plasmons. Our results, thus, pave the way to exploiting picoantennas as an efficient way to control light-matter interaction at the nanoscale.

Coherent collective oscillations of electrons excited in metallic nanostructures (localized surface plasmons) can confine incident light to atomic scales and enable strong light-matter interactions, which depend nonlinearly on the local field. Direct sampling of such collective electron oscillations in real-time is crucial to performing petahertz scale optical modulation, control, and readout in a quantum nanodevice. Here, we demonstrate real-time tracking of collective electron oscillations in an Au bowtie nanoantenna, by recording photo-assisted tunnelling currents generated by such oscillations in this quantum nanodevice. The collective electron oscillations show a noninstantaneous response to the driving laser fields with a decay time of nearly 10 femtoseconds. The temporal evolution of nonlinear electron oscillations resulting from the coherent nonlinear optical response of the nanodevice were also traced in real-time. The contributions of linear and nonlinear electron oscillations in the generated tunnelling currents in the nanodevice were precisely determined. A coherent control of electron oscillations in the nanodevice is illustrated directly in the time domain. Functioning in ambient conditions, the excitation, coherent control, and read-out of coherent electron oscillations pave the way toward on-chip light-wave electronics in quantum nanodevices.

As the number of automatic tools based on machine learning (ML) and resting-state electroencephalography (rs-EEG) for Parkinson's disease (PD) detection keeps growing, the assessment of possible exacerbation of health disparities by means of fairness and bias analysis becomes more relevant. Protected attributes, such as gender, play an important role in PD diagnosis development. However, analysis of sub-group populations stemming from different genders is seldom taken into consideration in ML models' development or the performance assessment for PD detection. In this work, we perform a systematic analysis of the detection ability for gender sub-groups in a multi-center setting of a previously developed ML algorithm based on power spectral density (PSD) features of rs-EEG. We find significant differences in the PD detection ability for males and females at testing time (80.5% vs. 63.7% accuracy) and significantly higher activity for a set of parietal and frontal EEG channels and frequency sub-bands for PD and non-PD males that might explain the differences in the PD detection ability for the gender sub-groups.

Resting-state EEG (rs-EEG) has been demonstrated to aid in Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis. In particular, the power spectral density (PSD) of low-frequency bands ({\delta} and {\theta}) and high-frequency bands ({\alpha} and \b{eta}) has been shown to be significantly different in patients with PD as compared to subjects without PD (non-PD). However, rs-EEG feature extraction and the interpretation thereof can be time-intensive and prone to examiner variability. Machine learning (ML) has the potential to automatize the analysis of rs-EEG recordings and provides a supportive tool for clinicians to ease their workload. In this work, we use rs-EEG recordings of 84 PD and 85 non-PD subjects pooled from four datasets obtained at different centers. We propose an end-to-end pipeline consisting of preprocessing, extraction of PSD features from clinically validated frequency bands, and feature selection before evaluating the classification ability of the features via ML algorithms to stratify between PD and non-PD subjects. Further, we evaluate the effect of feature harmonization, given the multi-center nature of the datasets. Our validation results show, on average, an improvement in PD detection ability (69.6% vs. 75.5% accuracy) by logistic regression when harmonizing the features and performing univariate feature selection (k = 202 features). Our final results show an average global accuracy of 72.2% with balanced accuracy results for all the centers included in the study: 60.6%, 68.7%, 77.7%, and 82.2%, respectively.

The motion of atoms is at the heart of any chemical or structural transformation in molecules and materials. Upon activation of this motion by an external source, several (usually many) vibrational modes can be coherently coupled, thus facilitating the chemical or structural phase transformation. These coherent dynamics occur on the ultrafast time scale, as revealed, e.g., by nonlocal ultrafast vibrational spectroscopic measurements in bulk molecular ensembles and solids. Tracking and controlling vibrational coherences locally at the atomic and molecular scales is, however, much more challenging and in fact has remained elusive so far. Here, we demonstrate that the vibrational coherences induced by broadband laser pulses on a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) can be probed by femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) when performed in a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). In addition to determining dephasing (~ 440 fs) and population decay times (~1.8 ps) of the generated phonon wave packets, we are able to track and control the corresponding quantum coherences, which we show to evolve on time scales as short as ~ 70 fs. Understanding and controlling the interaction between the excitonic states of a quantum emitter and the plasmonic modes of a nanocavity is one of the most relevant current scientific challenges, key for the development of many applications, from quantum information processing devices to polaritonic catalysts. In this paper we demonstrate that the tunnel electroluminescence of C60 nanocrystals enclosed in the plasmonic nanocavity between a metallic surface and the tip of a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope, and isolated from the metal surface by a thin NaCl film, can be switched from a broad emission spectrum, revealing the plasmonic modes of the cavity, to a narrow band emission, displaying only the excitonic states of the C60 molecules by changing the bias voltage applied to the junction. Plasmonic emission is found in the same voltage region in which the rate of inelastic tunnel transitions is large and, thus, vanishes for large voltages. Excitonic emission, on the other hand, dominates the spectra in the high-voltage region in which the inelastic rate is low, demonstrating that the excitons cannot be created by an inelastic tunnel process. These results point towards new possible mechanisms to explain the tunnel electroluminescence of quantum emitters and offer new avenues to develop electrically tuneable nanoscale light sources.

The accurate determination of electronic temperatures in metallic nanostructures is essential for many technological applications, like plasmon-enhanced catalysis or lithographic nanofabrication procedures. In this Letter we demonstrate that the electronic temperature can be accurately measured by the shape of the tunnel electroluminescence emission edge in tunnel plasmonic nanocavities, which follows a universal thermal distribution with the bias voltage as the chemical potential of the photon population. A significant deviation between electronic and lattice temperatures is found below 30 K for tunnel currents larger than 15 nA. This deviation is rationalized as the result of a two-electron process in which the second electron excites plasmon modes with an energy distribution that reflects the higher temperature following the first tunneling event. These results dispel a long-standing controversy on the nature of overbias emission in tunnel junctions and adds a new method for the determination of electronic temperatures and quasiparticle dynamics.

State-of-the-art techniques for detecting, or predicting, neurological disorders (1) focus on predicting each disorder individually, and are (2) computationally expensive, leading to a delay that can potentially render the prediction useless, especially in critical events. Towards this, we present a real-time two-tiered framework called EMAP, which cross-correlates the input with all the EEG signals in our mega-database (a combination of multiple EEG datasets) at the cloud, while tracking the signal in real-time at the edge, to predict the occurrence of a neurological anomaly. Disentangling the contributions of radiative and non-radiative localized plasmonic modes from the photonic density of states of metallic nanocavities between atomically-sharp tips and flat substrates remains an experimental challenge nowadays. Electroluminescence due to tunnelling through the tip-substrate gap allows discerning solely the excitation of radiative modes, but this information is inherently convolved with that of the electronic structure of the system. In this work we present a fully experimental procedure to eliminate the electronic-structure factors from the scanning tunnelling microscope luminescence spectra by confronting them with spectroscopic information extracted from elastic current measurements. Comparison against electromagnetic calculations demonstrates that this procedure allows characterizing the meV shifts experienced by the dipolar and quadrupolar plasmonic modes supported by the nanocavity under atomic-scale gap size changes. Our method, thus, gives us access to the frequency-dependent radiative Purcell enhancement that a microscopic light emitter would undergo when placed at the nanocavity.

The discretization of the electronic structure of nanometer-size solid systems due to quantum confinement and the concomitant modification of their physical properties is one of the cornerstones for the development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. In this letter we demonstrate that Bragg scattering of Cu(111) surface state electrons by the periodic arrangement of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) molecules at the edges of self-assembled molecular islands, discretizes the possible values of the electron momentum parallel to the island edge. The electronic structure consists thus of a discrete number of sub-bands which occur in a non-closed space and, therefore, without quantum confinement.
