We conducted a cross-sectional study in wild boar and extensively managed Iberian pig populations in a hotspot area of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in Spain. We tested for antibodies against CCHFV by using 2 ELISAs in parallel. We assessed the presence of CCHFV RNA by means of reverse transcription quantitative PCR protocol, which detects all genotypes. A total of 113 (21.8%) of 518 suids sampled showed antibodies against CCHFV by ELISA. By species, 106 (39.7%) of 267 wild boars and 7 (2.8%) of 251 Iberian pigs analyzed were seropositive. Of the 231 Iberian pigs and 231 wild boars analyzed, none tested positive for CCHFV RNA. These findings indicate high CCHFV exposure in wild boar populations in endemic areas and confirm the susceptibility of extensively reared pigs to CCHFV, even though they may only play a limited role in the enzootic cycle.

El presente artículo busca identificar los factores predictores de la conducta electoral en Colombia en las elecciones presidenciales de 2018. Para ello, fueron considerados aspectos como los factores sociodemográficos, el conocimiento de los procesos electorales y las actitudes y opiniones de los votantes sobre las elecciones y el sistema electoral. Se utilizó una metodología cuantitativa con información de segunda fuente proveniente de la Encuesta de Cultura Política del DANE (2019). La muestra fue de 19.461 adultos colombianos de todas las regiones del país y se llevó a cabo un análisis de regresión logística binaria. En los resultados se evaluaron 4 modelos de regresión logística con base en características sociodemográficas, percepción, actitudes y conocimientos sobre la democracia, que explican entre 2.5% y 7.5% de varianza. Se concluye que existen varios factores predictores de la conducta electoral como el género, estar desempleado, tener una discapacidad, simpatía partidista, tendencias de izquierda o derecha, entre otros. Sin embargo, llama la atención que la percepción de corrupción no tuvo un vínculo significativo con esta conducta.

Animal tuberculosis (TB) is often maintained by multi-host communities, including livestock and wildlife. Quantitative studies of such communities require estimating the true prevalence of TB, correcting the apparent prevalence by the diagnostic sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of the test. The goal of this study was to lay the foundations for estimating the true prevalence of TB in wild ungulate populations (wild boar and two cervids: red deer and fallow deer). We used Bayesian latent class models to assess the Se and Sp of gross pathology, IS6110 real-time PCR in tissues, bacteriological culture, and P22 indirect ELISA. We analyzed 308 harvested wild ungulates (211 wild boar and 97 cervids: 92 red deer and 5 fallow deer). The Se of bacteriological culture (80.4%, CI95 61.0–96.3%) and gross pathology (87.9%, CI95 69.5–99.9%) was reasonably good in wild boar. These tests showed lower Se in cervids: 60.2% (CI95 38.3–82.3%) for bacteriological culture and 81.5% (CI95 63.6–96.2%) for gross pathology. The Se of the real-time PCR was low (50.7% in wild boar and 53.0% in cervids). These tests showed Sp between 95.2 and 99.1% in both taxa. The P22 ELISA performed reasonably well in wild boar (Se = 71.9%, CI95 59.2–83.4%; Sp = 98.8%, CI95 96.9–99.9%) but lacked Sp in cervids (Se = 77.1%, CI95 62.9–89.7%; Sp = 74.5%, CI95 65.7–83.3%). The real-time PCR in wild boar and cervids and bacteriological culture in cervids tended to show higher Se in low-prevalence populations, possibly due to a higher proportion of early-stage TB lesions. In cervids, the parallel interpretation of gross pathology and bacteriological culture significantly improved the diagnostic performance (Se = 93.1%, CI95 84.7–98.9%; Sp = 92.9%, CI95 86.0–98.3%). Our results allow the estimation of true prevalence from the results of a single diagnostic test applied to harvested wild boar, red deer, and fallow deer, paving the way for more precise quantitative ecological studies of the multi-host TB maintenance community.

ABSTRACT Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is the second most common cause of cognitive impairment after Alzheimer's disease. The VCI spectrum involves a decline in cognition attributable to vascular pathologies (e.g., large infarcts or hemorrhages, microinfarcts, microbleeds, lacunar infarcts, white matter hyperintensities, and perivascular space dilation). Pathophysiological mechanisms include direct tissue injury, small vessel disease, inflammaging (inflammation + aging), atrophy, and altered neurotransmission. VCI is diagnosed using distinct clinical and radiological criteria. It may lead to long-term disability and reduced quality of life. An essential factor for reducing cognitive impairment incidence is preventing stroke by managing traditional and non-traditional cerebrovascular risk factors. This article reviews the spectrum of VCI, epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnosis, available treatment, and preventive strategies.

A new family of monothiooxalamides derived from 2-aminobenzimidazole was synthesized, and their structures were confirmed by 1H and 13C one-dimensional and 2D NMR experiments (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC). The antioxidant capacity was evaluated by free radical scavenging assays: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•), 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation (ABTS•+), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and the Fe(II) chelating ability. Our work group has previously reported the synthesis and antioxidant activity of monothiooxalamides derived from 2-aminopyridine (I). In this study, the in vitro hemolytic activity of compounds from the 2-aminopyridine (I) and 2-aminobenzimidazole (II) families was evaluated against human red blood cells (RBCs). The concentration at which monothiooxalamides showed no hemolytic activity was chosen to assess their ability to inhibit free radical-induced membrane damage in human RBCs, acute toxicity in brine shrimp, and in vivo toxicity against Drosophila melanogaster. Compounds with morpholine fragments (1g, 1h, 2g, and 2h) showed time- and concentration-dependent protective effects against radical-induced oxidative hemolysis. Moreover, they had the lowest acute toxicity in the brine shrimp lethality assay and a significant increase in chelating activity compared with the other molecules. In particular, monothiooxalamide 2g showed lower toxicity and can be considered for further biological screening and application trials.

Species of Leishmania and Trypanosoma genera are the causative agents of relevant parasitic diseases. Survival inside their hosts requires the existence of a potent antioxidant enzymatic machinery. Four iron superoxide dismutases have been described in trypanosomatids (FeSODA, FeSODB1, FeSODB2, and FeSODC) that hold a potential as therapeutic targets. Nonetheless, very few studies have been developed that make use of the purified enzymes. Moreover, FeSODC remains uncharacterised in Leishmania. In this work, for the first time, we describe the purification and enzymatic activity of recombinant versions of the four Leishmania FeSOD isoforms and establish an improved strategy for developing inhibitors. We propose a novel parameter [(V*cyt. c − Vcyt. c)/Vcyt. c] which, in contrast to that used in the classical cytochrome c reduction assay, correlates linearly with enzyme concentration. As a proof of concept, we determine the IC50 values of two ruthenium carbosilane metallodendrimers against these isoforms.

Since the description of Eulithinus analis (Rambur, 1838) the taxonomic position of this Sierra Nevada endemic earwig has been controversial. It has been subdivided in different taxa, assigned to various genera or transferred to different subfamilies. With the aim of clarifying its systematics, we performed a mitochondrial phylogeographic analysis using specimens from different localities of Sierra Nevada representing the diverse phenotypes treated as differentiated taxa until now, and a phylogenetic analysis including representatives of apparently distant, but morphologically close, relatives. The phylogenetic and phylogeographic results obtained using mitochondrial (cytb, cox1) and nuclear (ITS2) markers and the study of morphological characters, indicate that the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range harbors a single species of the genus Eulithinus. Based on these molecular data, the morphological characters used to date in the internal taxonomy of this group of earwigs, especially size and shape of the cerci, lack diagnostic validity and show a large inter- and intra-populational variability. These results imply the synonymy of Eulithinus montanus (Steinmann, 1981) with Eulithinus analis (Rambur, 1838) syn. nov. and the reconsideration of Eulithinus analis outside the subfamily Allodahliinae. We established the synonymy between Eulithinus analis (Rambur, 1838) and Forficula brevis Rambur, 1838 syn. nov., a name that must be removed from the synonymy of Forficula decipiens Gené, 1832.

Abstract Background There are a lot of tools to use for fall assessment, but there is not yet one that predicts the risk of falls in the elderly. This study aims to evaluate the use of the G-STRIDE prototype in the analysis of fall risk, defining the cut-off points to predict the risk of falling and developing a predictive model that allows discriminating between subjects with and without fall risks and those at risk of future falls. Methods An observational, multicenter case–control study was conducted with older people coming from two different public hospitals and three different nursing homes. We gathered clinical variables ( Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Standardized Frailty Criteria, Speed 4 m walk, Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), Time-Up Go Test, and Global Deterioration Scale (GDS)) and measured gait kinematics using an inertial measure unit (IMU). We performed a logistic regression model using a training set of observations (70% of the participants) to predict the probability of falls. Results A total of 163 participants were included, 86 people with gait and balance disorders or falls and 77 without falls; 67,8% were females, with a mean age of 82,63 ± 6,01 years. G-STRIDE made it possible to measure gait parameters under normal living conditions. There are 46 cut-off values of conventional clinical parameters and those estimated with the G-STRIDE solution. A logistic regression mixed model, with four conventional and 2 kinematic variables allows us to identify people at risk of falls showing good predictive value with AUC of 77,6% (sensitivity 0,773 y specificity 0,780). In addition, we could predict the fallers in the test group (30% observations not in the model) with similar performance to conventional methods. Conclusions The G-STRIDE IMU device allows to predict the risk of falls using a mixed model with an accuracy of 0,776 with similar performance to conventional model. This approach allows better precision, low cost and less infrastructures for an early intervention and prevention of future falls.

Background: The World Health Organization recommends health initiatives focused on the early detection of frailty and falls. Objectives: 1—To compare clinical characteristics, functional performance and gait parameters (estimated with the G-STRIDE inertial sensor) between different frailty groups in older adults with and without falls. 2—To identify variables that stratify participants according to frailty status and falls. 3—To verify the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the model that stratifies participants according to frailty status and falls. Methods: Observational, multicenter case-control study. Participants, adults over 70 years with and without falls were recruited from two outpatient clinics and three nursing homes from September 2021 to March 2022. Clinical variables and gait parameters were gathered using the G-STRIDE inertial sensor. Random Forest regression was applied to stratify participants. Results: 163 participants with a mean age of 82.6 ± 6.2 years, of which 118 (72%) were women, were included. Significant differences were found in all gait parameters (both conventional assessment and G-STRIDE evaluation). A hierarchy of factors contributed to the risk of frailty and falls. The confusion matrix and the performance metrics demonstrated high accuracy in classifying participants. Conclusions: Gait parameters, particularly those assessed by G-STRIDE, are effective in stratifying individuals by frailty status and falls. These findings underscore the importance of gait analysis in early intervention strategies.

Despite progress in the development of standards for describing and exchanging scientific information, the lack of easy-to-use standards for mapping between different representations of the same or similar objects in different databases poses a major impediment to data integration and interoperability. Mappings often lack the metadata needed to be correctly interpreted and applied. For example, are two terms equivalent or merely related? Are they narrow or broad matches? Or are they associated in some other way? Such relationships between the mapped terms are often not documented, which leads to incorrect assumptions and makes them hard to use in scenarios that require a high degree of precision (such as diagnostics or risk prediction). Furthermore, the lack of descriptions of how mappings were done makes it hard to combine and reconcile mappings, particularly curated and automated ones. We have developed the Simple Standard for Sharing Ontological Mappings (SSSOM) which addresses these problems by: (i) Introducing a machine-readable and extensible vocabulary to describe metadata that makes imprecision, inaccuracy and incompleteness in mappings explicit. (ii) Defining an easy-to-use simple table-based format that can be integrated into existing data science pipelines without the need to parse or query ontologies, and that integrates seamlessly with Linked Data principles. (iii) Implementing open and community-driven collaborative workflows that are designed to evolve the standard continuously to address changing requirements and mapping practices. (iv) Providing reference tools and software libraries for working with the standard. In this paper, we present the SSSOM standard, describe several use cases in detail and survey some of the existing work on standardizing the exchange of mappings, with the goal of making mappings Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR). Background: Molecular diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) is challenging in Mexico due to the population's high genetic heterogeneity. To date, 46 pathogenic variants (PVs) have been reported, yielding a detection rate of 77%. We updated the spectrum and frequency of PVs responsible for this disease in mexican patients. Methods: We extracted genomic DNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from 297 CF patients and their parents. First, we analyzed the five most frequent PVs in the Mexican population using PCR-mediated site-directed mutagenesis. In patients with at least one identified allele, CFTR sequencing was performed using next-generation sequencing tools and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. For variants not previously classified as pathogenic, we used a combination of in silico prediction, CFTR modeling, and clinical characteristics to determine a genotype–phenotype correlation. Results: We identified 95 PVs, increasing the detection rate to 87.04%. The most frequent variants were p.(PheF508del) (42.7%), followed by p.(Gly542*) (5.6%), p.(Ser945Leu) (2.9%), p.(Trp1204*) and p.(Ser549Asn) (2.5%), and CFTRdel25–26 and p.(Asn386Ilefs*3) (2.3%). El acceso de la población a una alimentación sana y sostenible es un derecho humano básico, que no siempre se cumple. En este artículo se analiza cómo se está garantizando este derecho en el Estado español, desgranando algunos de los mecanismos existentes para hacer frente a la inseguridad alimentaria. Asimismo, se recogen algunas experiencias concretas que intentan dar respuesta a estas situaciones, tanto desde lo comunitario como desde lo institucional, poniendo la mirada en los aportes que desde la agroecología se están realizando en el debate sobre la transformación de las ayudas alimentarias en nuestro país.

Abstract Background The audience response systems are being implemented to support active learning in nursing degree programs. The benefits of audience response systems have been studied in lecture-based classes and seminars, but their advantages or inconveniences when included in the debriefing phase of a high-fidelity clinical simulation have not been explored. The study aim was to discover student´s experience about using of interactive questions during debriefing, and the self-perceived effects on attention, participation and motivation. Methods A Mixed-methods study was used exploratory sequential design in a university. The participants were 4th-year students enrolled in the Nursing Degree in a university in Southern Spain. (1) Qualitative phase: a phenomenological approach was utilized, and focus groups were used for data-collection. (2) Quantitative phase: cross-sectional descriptive study using a questionnaire designed “ad hoc”, on the experiences on the use of interactive questions in the debriefing phase and the Debriefing Experience Scale. Results (1) Qualitative phase: the students highlighted the facilitating role of the interactive questions during the reflection part of the debriefing, and mentioned that the interactive questions helped with stimulating attention, participation, and motivation during the analytical part of the debriefing; (2) Quantitative phase: it was observed that the best evaluated dimension was “Motivation”, with a mean of 4.7 (SD = 0.480), followed by the dimension “Participation”, with a mean of 4.66 (SD = 0.461), and lastly, the dimension “Attention”, with a mean of 4.64 (SD = 0.418). Conclusions The use of interactive questions contributed the attention, participation, and motivation of the students during the debriefing, contributing towards a highly satisfactory experience of high-fidelity clinical simulation.

Attitudes, practices, and knowledge about bullying were evaluated in a sample of 274 primary care professionals, including general practitioners, pediatricians, community, pediatric and school nurses, and residents of these specialties. This study was based on a mixed method with a parallel convergent design without dominance between phases, data were collected concurrently, and conversion of the results from both phases was carried out during data interpretation. The quantitative phase had a cross-sectional observational design, using The Healthcare Provider’s Practices, Attitudes, Self-confidence, and Knowledge Regarding Bullying Questionnaire as an instrument. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed, which showed a positive correlation between higher self-confidence and knowledge scores and a greater predisposition to detect cases. However, although the dimensions of attitudes and knowledge yielded generally high data, low self-confidence was evident in addressing this problem. In addition, a lack of clear guidelines in the workplace was expressed, highlighting the need to create and provide specific resources to intervene in bullying in said context, which could develop an improvement in self-confidence, leading to greater well-being for the educational community regarding bullying.
