Abstract Engineered stone silicosis (ESS), primarily caused by inhaling respirable crystalline silica, poses a significant occupational health risk globally. ESS has no effective treatment and presents a rapid progression from simple silicosis (SS) to progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), with respiratory failure and death. Despite the use of diagnostic methods like chest x‐rays and high‐resolution computed tomography, early detection of silicosis remains challenging. Since routine blood tests have shown promise in detecting inflammatory markers associated with the disease, this study aims to assess whether routine blood biomarkers, coupled with machine learning techniques, can effectively differentiate between healthy individuals, subjects with SS, and PMF. To this end, 107 men diagnosed with silicosis, ex‐workers in the engineered stone (ES) sector, and 22 healthy male volunteers as controls not exposed to ES dust were recruited. Twenty‐one primary biochemical markers derived from peripheral blood extraction were obtained retrospectively from clinical hospital records. Relief‐F features selection technique was applied, and the resulting subset of 11 biomarkers was used to build five machine learning models, demonstrating high performance with sensitivities and specificities in the best case greater than 82% and 89%, respectively. The percentage of lymphocytes, the angiotensin‐converting enzyme, and lactate dehydrogenase indexes were revealed, among others, as blood biomarkers with significant cumulative importance for the machine learning models. Our study reveals that these biomarkers could detect a chronic inflammatory status and potentially serve as a supportive tool for the diagnosis, monitoring, and early detection of the progression of silicosis.

Introduction: Literature suggests that there is a close relationship between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular (CV) disease. The aim of this study was to assess whether the presence of coronary calcium (CC) on chest computed tomography (CT) in asymptomatic COPD patients is associated with an increased risk of CV events and mortality. Material and methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed following PRISMA recommendations. Studies published in the last 20 years in four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and MEDLINE) were included. Results: Three hundred fifty articles were identified, eight of them met the selection criteria. The included studies, conducted between 2013 and 2024, were predominantly multicentre cohort studies. The meta-analysis showed that the presence of CC on chest CT of COPD patients is an independent predictor of CV events (hazard ratio 1.44, 95% CI 1.22–1.70) and associated with an increased mortality during the follow-up period (hazard ratio 1.57, 95% CI 1.35–1.83). Conclusions: Our analysis suggests that the identification of CC on chest CT scans of COPD patients may be useful in the early detection and treatment of CV disease in asymptomatic patients. Prospective, multicentre studies confirming our findings are needed to explore the potential impact of early detection and treatment of CV risk in COPD patients. Resumen: Introducción: La literatura sugiere que existe una estrecha relación entre la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) y la enfermedad cardiovascular (CV). El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar si la presencia de calcio coronario (CC) en la tomografía computarizada (TC) torácica en pacientes asintomáticos con EPOC se asocia con un mayor riesgo de eventos CV y mortalidad CV. Material y métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura siguiendo las recomendaciones PRISMA. Se incluyeron estudios publicados en los últimos 20 años en cuatro bases de datos (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase y MEDLINE). Resultados: Se identificaron 350 artículos, ocho de los cuales cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Los estudios fueron realizados entre 2013 y 2024, con un diseño de cohortes y de carácter multicéntricos. El metaanálisis concluyó que la presencia de CC en la TC torácica de pacientes con EPOC es un predictor independiente de eventos CV (hazard ratio: 1,44; IC 95%: 1,22-1,70), y se relacionó con un aumento de la mortalidad CV en el período de seguimiento (hazard ratio: 1,57; IC 95%: 1,35-1,83). Conclusiones: El análisis sugiere que la identificación de CC en las TC torácicas de pacientes con EPOC puede ser útil en la detección precoz y en el tratamiento de la enfermedad CV en pacientes asintomáticos. Se necesitan estudios prospectivos multicéntricos que confirmen nuestros hallazgos para explorar el impacto potencial de la detección precoz y el tratamiento del riesgo CV en pacientes con EPOC.

Strain SAICEUPBMT was isolated from soils of Almadén (Ciudad Real, Spain), subjected to a high mercury concentration. SAICEUPBMT significantly increased aerial plant weight, aerial plant length and the development of secondary roots under mercury stress; increased twice the absorption of mercury by the plant, while favoring its development in terms of biomass. Similarly, plants inoculated with SAICEUPBMT and grown in soils contaminated with mercury, express a lower activity of antioxidant enzymes; catalase enzymes (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR) for defense against ROS (reactive oxygen species). Whole genome analysis showed that ANI (95. 96 %), dDDH (72.9 %), AAI (93.3 %) and TETRA (0.99) values were on the thresholds established for differentiation a subspecies. The fatty acids analysis related the strain with the Peribacillus frigoritolerans species. And the synapomorphic analysis reveals a common ancestor with analysis related the strain with the Peribacillus frigoritolerans species. Results from genomic analysis together with differences in phenotypic features and chemotaxonomic analysis support the proposal of strain SAICEUPBMT as the type strain of a novel subspecies for which the name Peribacillus frigoritolerans subps. mercuritolerans sp. nov is proposed. The absence of virulence genes and transmissible resistance mechanisms reveals its safety for agronomic uses, under mercury stress conditions. The ability of Peribacillus frigoritolerans subsp. mercuritolerans subsp. nov to improve plant development was tested in a Lupinus albus model, demonstrating a great potential for plant phytoprotection against mercury stress.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) projects are pivotal in addressing climate change and fostering a sustainable energy future. However, the complex landscape of renewable energy investments, characterized by high upfront costs, market uncertainties, and evolving technologies, demands innovative evaluation methods. The Real Options Approach has emerged as a powerful tool, offering strategic flexibility in decision-making under uncertainty. This paper comprehensively analyzes the application of real options for evaluating solar photovoltaic projects in 2008–2023. Analysis of document descriptors (author keywords, index keywords, and noun phrases extracted from titles and abstracts) reveals that the dominant research topics in the last ten years (2014–2023) include investment optimization, strategic analysis, energy policy, optimization of energy generation and investments in wind energy. These descriptors are used to analyze the evolution of research interests on a two-year basis and reveal the yearly evolution of the research topics. Finally, the concept of emergence is used to unveil emerging research trends, providing valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the renewable energy sector. Ultimately, this work contributes to a deeper understanding of how real options analysis empowers decision-makers to make informed choices in advancing clean and sustainable energy solutions.

Sustainable Development Goals try to foster several targets for a better planet. Universities play a key role in providing access to tertiary education. Our teaching experience focuses on two SDGs: number 4 on quality education and number 10 on reduction of inequalities with the objective to build an inclusive and effective learning environment for students within quality education. Antitrust law was selected as part of the legal course to be taught with an innovative methodology. Our methodology consists of using the SCORM package due to the benefits it brings to the learning process and its management. Exe-Learning has been used as a tool to create the SCORM package. Social inclusion of people with some type of disability is enhanced with the content editor, contributing to the University's goal of reducing inequalities in diversity. One of the ways to eliminate disparities for the most vulnerable people, including people with disabilities, has been achieved by implementing accessibility elements, for integration of students from other cultures through a script that includes a language translator. Finally, from the material perspective of the subject, the horizontal guidelines on sustainability agreements are taught, which clarify that antitrust regulations do not hinder agreements between competitors that pursue a sustainability objective

Social media plays a crucial role in health information dissemination, yet it also raises concerns about misinformation. This study examines the role of Spanish health centers in promoting influenza vaccination on social networks, particularly X (formerly Twitter), during the 2023–2024 campaign. An observational, retrospective study analyzed the activity of 832 Spanish health centers on X. Data collection focused on the existence of official accounts, follower engagement and the nature of messages posted. Metrics were obtained using X Analytics, and statistical analysis was performed using JAMOVI v2.4 software. Of the 832 centers, 607 had readable X accounts. Collective accounts were more prevalent (351) than individual ones (239). Collective accounts had significantly more followers and posts but showed less engagement compared to individual accounts. The most followed accounts belonged to public entities, like the Community of Madrid and private organizations, such as Sanitas. An analysis of the vaccination campaign revealed that most posts had a political focus with limited health information, resulting in minimal interaction with the public. As a conclusion, the study highlights the fragmented nature of health communication through social networks in Spain. Despite the higher visibility of collective accounts, their engagement with the public is low, often due to the political nature of posts. A unified national strategy is essential for enhancing public health communication, focusing on interactive and relevant content.

Abstract Background Soils affected by salinity are a recurring problem that is continually increasing due to the impact of climate change on weather conditions and ineffective agricultural management practices. The use of plant growth promoting (PGP) Bacteria can alleviate its effects. In this regard, the genus Rhizobium has demonstrated excellent PGP capabilities through various plant growth promotion mechanisms and may therefore be a promising biofortifier under saline conditions. However, little is known about the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by bacteria of this genus and their effects on plant development. Here, we aim to characterize the volatilome (the set of volatile metabolites synthesized by an organism) of Rhizobium for the first time and to further investigate the direct and VOC-mediated interaction between a strain of this genus and lettuce, a crop severely affected by salinity, both under saline and non-saline conditions. Results In this study, it was shown that the use of Rhizobium sp. GPTR29 was able to increase the production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under normal and saline conditions. We analyzed the Rhizobium volatilome under non-saline (0 mM NaCl) and saline (100 mM NaCl) conditions by HS-SPME-GC‒MS and found a differential composition in response to salinity. We detected 20 different compounds, where 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, and α-pinene were the backbone of the Rhizobium volatilome. Exposure to these compounds in bicameral plates under salt stress resulted in increases in plant development of 17.1%, 16.0% and 33.1% in aerial part size, number of leaves and root length, respectively. Under greenhouse conditions and salinity, the inoculation of Rhizobium sp. GPTR29 resulted in an increase of 17.8% and 27.4% in shoot fresh and dry weight, respectively. Phenolic compounds were analyzed by HPLC–DAD-MS, revealing an increase in total flavonoid content under salinity conditions (100 mM NaCl) and apigenin derivative, luteolin 7-O-glucoside and quercetin 3-O-glucuronide individually. Conclusions These results provide new avenues for the study of PGP mechanisms in this bacterial genus, such as VOCs and their effects on plant growth, which play an important role in mediating plant–microorganism interactions. Schizophrenia is a persistent mental health condition that, while presenting challenges, underscores the dynamic nature of cognitive functions and encourages a unique perspective on how individuals engage with their surroundings. Social networks, as a means of communication of great importance at the present time, are for this type of people a way of interacting with their environment with a high level of security. The aim is to find out how schizophrenia is dealt with in different social networks and to differentiate between different types of articles dealing with the use of Facebook, X (former Twitter), YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Weibo. A total of 45 articles to i) Social networks used, ii) Country of analyzed users, iii) age of the users analyzed, iv) focus of the analyzed manuscript (mental health literacy, stigmatization, detection of patterns associated with schizophrenia, and Harmful substance use). It was observed that 45.45% of the studies analyzed were conducted in the USA population, followed by UK and China (13.64%). The most analyzed social networks were those based on audiovisual communication (60%). Furthermore, the two main foci addressed in these articles were: stigmatization of schizophrenia with 16 articles (35.55%), following by the prediction of schizophrenia-detecting patterns with 15 articles (33.33%) and the use of social networks to stigmatize people with schizophrenia (38%) and only 14 articles (31.11%) were focused on mental health literacy. Likewise, it was found that there is great potential in the use of the analysis of the content generated, as possible predictors of the presence of this disease, which would allow rapid detection and intervention for psychosis and schizophrenia.

Abstract Background and Study Aims Our aim was to determine the impact of the SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic on the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Patients and Methods This prospective cohort study included individuals diagnosed with CRC between March 13, 2019 and June 20, 2021 across 21 Spanish hospitals. Two time periods were compared: prepandemic (from March 13, 2019 to March 13, 2020) and pandemic (from March 14, 2020 to June 20, 2021, lockdown period and 1 year after lockdown). Results We observed a 46.9% decrease in the number of CRC diagnoses (95% confidence interval (CI): 45.1%–48.7%) during the lockdown and 29.7% decrease (95% CI: 28.1%–31.4%) in the year after the lockdown. The proportion of patients diagnosed at stage I significantly decreased during the pandemic (21.7% vs. 19.0%; p = 0.025). Centers that applied universal preprocedure SARS‐CoV‐2 PCR testing experienced a higher reduction in the number of colonoscopies performed during the pandemic post‐lockdown (34.0% reduction; 95% CI: 33.6%–34.4% vs. 13.7; 95% CI: 13.4%–13.9%) and in the number of CRCs diagnosed (34.1% reduction; 95% CI: 31.4%–36.8% vs. 26.7%; 95% CI: 24.6%–28.8%). Curative treatment was received by 87.5% of patients diagnosed with rectal cancer prepandemic and 80.7% of patients during the pandemic post‐lockdown period (p = 0.002). Conclusions The COVID‐19 pandemic has led to a decrease in the number of diagnosed CRC cases and in the proportion of stage I CRC. The reduction in the number of colonoscopies and CRC diagnoses was higher in centers that applied universal SARS‐CoV‐2 PCR screening before colonoscopy. In addition, the COVID‐19 pandemic has affected curative treatment of rectal cancers.

Abstract The production of land cover maps is an everyday use of image classification applications on remote sensing. However, managing Earth observation satellite data for a large region of interest is challenging in the task of creating land cover maps. Since satellite imagery is getting more precise and extensive, Big Data techniques are becoming essential to handle the rising quantity of data. Furthermore, given the complexity of managing and analysing the data, defining a methodology that reduces the complexity of the process into different smaller steps is vital to data processing. This paper presents a Big Data methodology for creating land cover maps employing artificial intelligence algorithms. Machine Learning algorithms are contemplated for remote sensing and geodata classification, supported by explainable artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the process considers aspects related to downloading data from different satellites, Copernicus and ASTER, executing the pre-processing and processing of the data in a distributed environment, and depicting the visualisation of the result. The methodology is validated in a test case for er map of the Mediterranean Basin.

Heat stress is a significant environmental problem that has a detrimental impact on animal welfare and production efficiency in swine farms. The current study was conducted to assess the effect of low-intensity showers, provided during critical high-temperature hours daily, on body external temperature, feeding pattern, and carcass and meat quality characteristics in fattening pigs. A total of 400 animals (200 barrows and 200 gilts) were randomly allotted in 40 pens. A shower nozzle was installed over 20 pens (half barrows and half gilts) where pigs received a low-intensity shower for 2 min in 30 min intervals from 12 to 19 h (SHO group). Another group without showers was also considered (CON). Feeder occupancy measurement, thermographic measures, and carcass and meat quality parameters were studied. In the periods with higher environmental temperatures, SHO animals showed an increase in the feeder occupancy rate compared to the CON group. A decrease in temperature was observed after the shower, regardless of the anatomical location (p < 0.005). The treatment with showers led to higher values than in the CON group of 4.72%, 3.87%, 11.8%, and 15.1% for hot carcass weight, lean meat yield, and fat thickness in Longissimus Dorsi (LD) and Gluteus Medius muscles, respectively (p < 0.01). Pork from CON showed a 14.9% higher value of drip loss, and 18.9% higher malondialdehyde concentration than SHO (p < 0.01); meanwhile, intramuscular fat content was 22.8% higher in SHO than in CON (p < 0.01). On the other hand, the CON group exhibited higher L* (2.13%) and lower a* and b* values (15.8% and 8.97%) compared to the SHO group. However, the pH20h of the CON group was significantly lower than that of the SHO group (p < 0.001), indicating a softer pH decrease. Related to fatty acids in subcutaneous outer and inner layers and intramuscular fat, the CON group showed higher ΣSFA and lower ΣMUFA and Δ9-desaturase indexes than SHO (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the amelioration of heat stress through showers at critical times should be considered an interesting tool that improves both carcass and meat quality, as well as animal welfare.

El objetivo de la investigación es identificar determinantes robustos de la corrupción en México. Se plantea la metodología del Promedio de Modelos Bayesiano (BMA por sus siglas en inglés) para analizar 25 posibles determinantes de manera simultánea en una muestra que contempla las 32 entidades federativas, abarcando el período de 2015-2020. El BMA construye 33,554,432 combinaciones posibles de modelos para extraer los determinantes más robustos. Del mismo modo, se utiliza el BMA con variables instrumentales (IVBMA) para considerar los posibles problemas de endogeneidad. Los resultados indican que los factores institucionales son los mejores predictores de la corrupción, esto es, el Estado de Derecho, la democracia, la educación y la eficiencia del gobierno, muestran una asociación significativa con la corrupción.

Objectives. To determine the pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block’s postoperative analgesic efficacy and safety compared to the suprainguinal fascia iliaca (SFI) block in patients undergoing primary hip arthroplasty using the same injectate volume. Material and Methods. Between January 2021 and March 2022, American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA-PS) classification I–III patients scheduled for hip arthroplasty were included in this study. After standard monitoring and subarachnoid anesthesia, an ultrasound-guided PENG or SFI block with 20 ml of 0.25% levobupivacaine was performed for postoperative analgesia. All patients were assessed with a numerical rating scale (NRS) at presurgery, upon arrival at the postanesthesia care unit (PACU), and in the postoperative period at 2, 4, 12, and 24 hours. The need for analgesic rescue and adverse effects was also assessed. Results. A total of 130 patients were included in the study (62 PENG block and 68 SFI block). Both blocks were equally effective in managing postoperative pain without any statistically significant differences except at 12 h (p=0.023), where the deviation found was not clinically relevant. The median total morphine consumption was 0 mg [0–2] in the PENG block group and 0 mg [0–2] in the SFI block group. A more significant motor block was found in the first 6 hours in the SFI block group (p=0.001). There was no significant difference in the ease of performing PENG (79%) or SFI (85%) blocks. No major complications were recorded in both groups, and patient satisfaction was high (83.9% for the PENG block group vs. 91.2% for the SFI block group). Discussion. Both blocks have been demonstrated to be effective for postoperative analgesia in hip arthroplasty and should be integrated as a multimodal analgesic strategy. The lesser degree of motor block recorded in the first hours with the PENG block makes it the most suitable option for early recovery. Both techniques were easy and safe to perform.

Introducción: El Síndrome de Burnout (SB) se desarrolla en personas que experimentan una carga excesiva de trabajo, generando como consecuencia un deterioro significativo de la salud mental y el estado físico. Objetivo: Conocer los factores de riesgo psicosocial asociados al síndrome de burnout en trabajadores de la salud. Métodos: A través de una revisión sistemática con enfoque cualitativo, se recopilaron 19 artículos publicados de cuatro bases de datos: Scielo, Google Académico, Dialnet y PubMed. Resultados: los factores de riesgo asociados al SB se encuentran sexo femenino, comorbilidades, sobrecarga laboral, actividades monótonas, falta de pausas activas, alimentación inadecuada, desabastecimiento de suministros, tipo de contratación y área de trabajo. Dentro de los factores protectores incluyen ejercicio diario, alimentación saludable, sueño reparador, personalidad asertiva, e higiene en el trabajo. Conclusión: Es imperativo promover la autoconfianza y la satisfacción laboral, así como proporcionar un entorno de trabajo seguro y saludable. Se debe incentivar a los trabajadores a solicitar ayuda cuando sea necesario para asegurar una atención de calidad para los pacientes y un ambiente laboral óptimo para el personal.

Se realizó un trabajo de investigación basado en el Sistema Globalmente Armonizado (SGA), aplicable al inventario de reactivos del Laboratorio de Bioquímica del Politécnico Colombiano Jaime Isaza Cadavid de Medellín; creando un sitio web empleado para la elaboración de las etiquetas y hojas de seguridad facilitando su lectura mediante un código QR. Esta nueva tecnología de información permite observar desde cualquier dispositivo móvil las características químicas de los insumos del laboratorio, los riesgos potenciales para la salud por exposición o contacto accidental, las afectaciones al medio ambiente por vertimiento involuntario, la neutralización de la sustancia en caso de derrame accidental, los primeros auxilios y la disposición final de los residuos generados. Este proyecto presenta ventajas aportadas por el sistema integrado de información, con las herramientas tecnológicas que permiten hoy en día una comunicación ágil y rápida, además de estar inscrito dentro del Plan de Desarrollo 2022-2025 “Calidad Académica y Humana”.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection affects the vascular endothelium, which mediates the inflammatory and thrombotic cascade. Moreover, alterations in the endothelium are related to arterial stiffness, which has been established as a marker of cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study is to analyse how the structure, vascular function, vascular ageing and endothelial damage are related to the biopsychological situation in adults diagnosed with persistent COVID and the differences by gender.Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study will be carried out in the Primary Care Research Unit of Salamanca (APISAL) and in the BioSepsis laboratory of the University of Salamanca. The sample will be selected from the persistent COVID monographic office at the Internal Medicine Service of the University Hospital of Salamanca, and from the population of subjects diagnosed with persistent COVID in the clinical history of Primary Care. Through consecutive sampling, the study will include 300 individuals diagnosed with persistent COVID who meet the diagnosis criteria established by the WHO, after they sign the informed consent. Endothelial damage biomarkers will be measured using ELLA-SimplePlexTM technology (Biotechne). Their vascular structure and function will be analysed by measuring the carotid intima-media thickness (Sonosite Micromax); the pulse wave and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) will be recorded with Sphygmocor System®. Cardio Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index will be analysed with Vasera VS-2000®. The integral assessment of the subjects with persistent COVID will be conducted with different scales that evaluate fatigue, sleep, dyspnea, quality of life, attention, nutrition state, and fragility. We will also evaluate their lifestyles (diet, physical activity, smoking habits and alcohol consumption), psychological factors, and cognitive deterioration, which will be gathered through validated questionnaires; moreover, physical activity will be objectively measured using a pedometer for 7 days. Body composition will be measured through impedance using an Inbody 230. Vascular ageing will be calculated with 10 and 90 percentiles of cfPWV and baPWV. Furthermore, we will analyse the presence of vascular injury in the retina, heart, kidneys and brain, as well as cardiovascular risk. Demographic and analytical variables will also be gathered.Discussion: Arterial stiffness reflects the mechanic and functional properties of the arterial wall, showing the changes in arterial pressure, blood flow, and vascular diameter that occur with each heartbeat. SARS-CoV-2 affects the endothelial cells that are infected with this virus, increasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and pro-thrombotic factors, which can cause early vascular ageing and an increase of arterial stiffness. Persistent COVID is a complex heterogeneous disorder that affects the lives of millions of people worldwide. The identifications of potential risk factors to better understand who is at risk of developing persistent COVID is important, since this would enable early and appropriate clinical support. It is unknown whether vascular alterations caused by COVID-19 resolve after acute infection or remain over time, favouring the increase of arterial stiffness and early vascular ageing. Therefore, it is necessary to propose studies that analyse the evolution of persistent COVID in this group of patients, as well as the possible variables that influence it.Clinical Trial registration:ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT05819840

En los últimos años, los intangibles han tomado protagonismo en la gestión de las organizaciones; entre ellos, la cultura corporativa, la captación del talento y la diversidad -como parte del Agenda 2030-. Sin embargo, los datos reflejan que el empleo de las personas con discapacidad es hoy todavía muy residual. En este escenario, abordar la situación de las personas con discapacidad parece oportuno dado que, más allá de las cifras de empleo, apenas existen trabajos que investiguen su opinión y menos aún, si se vincula con intangibles como la cultura corporativa o la responsabilidad social. Este trabajo quiere reflejar esta realidad, conocer la opinión de las personas directamente afectadas sobre la gestión de la discapacidad en la cultura corporativa para detectar puntos débiles y fortalezas, y proponer mejoras, si fuera oportuno.

Los síndromes paraneoplásicos son la forma de manifestación de ciertos tumores. La ecografía endobronquial (EBUS) es útil en el estudio de las adenopatías mediastínicas. El objetivo es describir las características de los pacientes con sospecha de síndromes paraneoplásicos y adenopatías mediastínicas. Se realizó un estudio observacional retrospectivo en el que se incluyeron pacientes de la unidad de endoscopia respiratoria de nuestro centro a quienes se realizó EBUS para valorar adenopatías mediastínicas como parte del estudio de cuadros sospechosos de síndrome paraneoplásico entre 2008 y 2021. Se incluyeron 10 pacientes. Los síndromes paraneoplásicos neurológicos fueron los más frecuentes (70%), con síntomas y anticuerpos onconeuronales altamente relacionados con procesos tumorales. La EBUS tuvo una sensibilidad del 83%. La estirpe tumoral más frecuente fue el carcinoma de células pequeñas (40%). Solo uno de los casos con hallazgo de hiperplasia linfoide en la EBUS fue diagnosticado posteriormente de carcinoma mucosecretor. En pacientes con sospecha de síndrome paraneoplásico y adenopatías significativas en las pruebas de imagen se debe valorar su punción mediante EBUS. En nuestra serie, esta técnica tiene una elevada sensibilidad y permite el diagnóstico de procesos tumorales que en muchas ocasiones son la forma manifestación de ciertos tumores.

Obligate halophily is extremely rare in fungi. Nevertheless, Aspergillus atacamensis (strain EXF-6660), isolated from a salt water-exposed cave in the Coastal Range hills of the hyperarid Atacama Desert in Chile, is an obligate halophile, with a broad optimum range from 1.5 to 3.4 M of NaCl. When we tested its ability to grow at varied concentrations of both kosmotropic (NaCl, KCl, and sorbitol) and chaotropic (MgCl2, LiCl, CaCl2, and glycerol) solutes, stereoscopy and laser scanning microscopy revealed the formation of phialides and conidia. A. atacamensis EXF-6660 grew up to saturating levels of NaCl and at 2.0 M concentration of the chaotropic salt MgCl2. Our findings confirmed that A. atacamensis is an obligate halophile that can grow at substantially higher MgCl2 concentrations than 1.26 M, previously considered as the maximum limit supporting prokaryotic life. To assess the fungus’ metabolic versatility, we used the phenotype microarray technology Biolog FF MicroPlates. In the presence of 2.0 M NaCl concentration, strain EXF-6660 metabolism was highly versatile. A vast repertoire of organic molecules (~95% of the substrates present in Biolog FF MicroPlates) was metabolized when supplied as sole carbon sources, including numerous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene derivatives, dyes, and several carbohydrates. Finally, the biotechnological potential of A. atacamensis for xenobiotic degradation and biosolid treatment was investigated. Interestingly, it could remove biphenyls, diphenyl ethers, different pharmaceuticals, phenols, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Our combined findings show that A. atacamensis EXF-6660 is a highly chaotolerant, kosmotolerant, and xerotolerant fungus, potentially useful for xenobiotic and biosolid treatments.
