Objective: To assess the association between lipid metabolism and fetal fraction, which is a critical factor in ensuring a highly accurate non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), and on the rate of screen failures or “no calls” in NIPT.Methods: A total of 4,514 pregnant women at 12–26 weeks of gestation underwent NIPT sequencing and serum lipid measurements. Univariate analysis and multivariate regression models were used to evaluate the associations of serum lipid concentrations with the fetal fraction and the rate of screen failures.Results: The fetal fraction decreased with increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) levels, which were significant factors (standardized coefficient: −0.11). Conversely, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the interval between the two tests were positively correlated with the fetal fraction. The median fetal fraction was 10.88% (interquartile range, 8.28–13.89%) and this decreased with TG from 11.56% at ≤1.10 mmol/L to 9.51% at >2.30 mmol/L. Meanwhile, multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that increased TG levels were independently associated with the risk of screen failures. The rate of screen failures showed an increase with TG levels from 1.20% at ≤1.70 mmol/L to 2.41% at >2.30 mmol/L.Conclusions: The fetal fraction and the rate of screen failures in NIPT are affected by TG levels. Meanwhile, in pregnant women with high TG levels, delaying the time between NIPT blood collections can significantly increase the fetal fraction.

High-refractive index polymeric materials, which are transparent, have many promising applications in optical design and advanced optoelectronic fabrication. In order to improve the refractive index of polymeric materials, inorganic materials with high-refractive index, such as TiO2, are always added into polymers. However, some of the traditional synthetic methods are complicated and hard to control. In our work, we developed a novel and simple method, a one-step in situ solvothermal method, to prepare poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and nano-TiO2 hybrid films. Methyl methacrylate (MMA), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMO), titanium butoxide [Ti(OBu)4], ethanol, hydrochloric acid, azobis-isobutyronitrile and tetrahydrofuran were added into a reaction vessel altogether and the polymerization of PMMA matrix and the formation of nano-TiO2 composite carried out simultaneously. To improve the adhesion between PMMA and TiO2, VTMO was used as a comonomer. The results indicate that TiO2 nanoparticles produced by decomposition of titanium butoxide are dispersed homogeneously in the PMMA matrix. The size of TiO2 crystals in PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites is about 5–6 nm. The hybrid films have a good transparency (over 80 %) in the visible region, a good thermal stability and a UV-shielding property after the incorporation of TiO2. The refractive index of as-formed PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites increases up to 1.839 at 633 nm as the content of Ti(OBu)4 is 50.00 wt%.

To extend the applications of wood–plastic composites (WPCs), soft WPCs were prepared with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and wood flour (WF) as major components via a two-step process involving two-roll mixing and compression molding. The effect of the various factors, such as WF, unsaturated fatty acid (UFA), and dicumyl peroxide contents, on the mechanical properties, processability, and morphology of the WPCs was investigated in detail. The addition of UFA could effectively improve the processability and flexibility of the composites. The in situ grafting reaction between UFA and EVA considerably improved the adhesion of the WF and resin matrix. Consequently, soft WPCs with good performances in flexibility and processability were successfully obtained. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013

To improve the thermal and mechanical properties and further to expand its applications of epoxy in electronic packaging, reduced graphene oxide/epoxy composites have been successfully prepared, in which dopamine (DA) was used as reducing agent and modifier for graphene oxide (GO) to avoid the environmentally harmful reducing agents and address the problem of aggregation of graphene in composites. Further studies revealed that DA could effectively eliminate the labile oxygen functionality of GO and generate polydopamine functionalized graphene oxide (PDA-GO) because DA would be oxidated and undergo the rearrangement and intermolecular cross-linking reaction to produce polydopamine (PDA), which would improve the interfacial adhesion between GO and epoxy, and further be beneficial for the homogenous dispersion of GO in epoxy matrix. The effect of PDA-GO on the thermal and mechanical properties of PDA-GO/epoxy composites was also investigated, and the incorporation of PDA-GO could increase the thermal conductivity, storage modulus, glass transition (Tg), and dielectric constant of epoxy. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
