Three novel fluoranthene dyes were obtained by cycloaddition reactions using acrylonitrile and dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates. Their fluorescence properties in different polar-organic solvents were investigated systematically. Meanwhile, spectral changes induced by the addition of water in methanol were observed, indicating that these fluoranthenes dyes can be efficiently used to detect the water content in methanol as probes. Significantly, the practical test measurements for the water contents in methanol illustrated the measured results with the three fluorescent probes were basically consistent with the water content added artificially. This demonstrated the potential of these fluoranthene dyes as probes in measuring the water content in methanol.

Two monomers, a second-order nonlinear optical azo chromophore C containing a tricyanofuran electron acceptor and a dihydroxyethyl nitrogen electron donor, and a bisphenol AF-type diether dianhydride (BPAFDA), were designed and synthesized. Fluorinated polyurethaneimide (PUI) electro-optic (EO) waveguide materials were prepared using the synthesized monomers polymerized with 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). The structures of the synthesized chromophore C, BPAFDA, and polymers of PUI were characterized by 1HNMR and FTIR, and the thermal properties of the polymers were characterized by DSC and TGA. The prepared PUI exhibited good film-forming properties with glass transition temperatures (Tg) between 160–169°C and over 300°C at 5% thermal weight loss in a nitrogen atmosphere. The experimental results showed that the fluorinated PUIs possessed an EO coefficient of 56–60 p.m./V at 1550 nm and the optical propagation loss of the polymer waveguide was between 1.3–1.4 dB/cm at 1550 nm. Using PUI as the core material of the waveguides, EO modulators with Mach-Zehnder (MZ) structure were designed and prepared, showing good EO modulation performance at 1550 nm.

Suitable chemical components in water systems for human health are a crucial prerequisite for mankind's survival. Simple and effective innovations are being developed to efficiently monitor healthy and toxic substances. Here, with a hydrothermal technique, a novel thermostable metal–organic framework (MOF) [Cd2(L)(bib)0.5(H2O)3]n·1.75n(H2O) (MOF-1, H4L = biphenyl-2,3,3′,5′-tetracarboxylic acid, bib = 1,4-bis(imidazolyl)butane) was designed and synthesized. MOF-1 shows a 4,5-connection binodal 3D fsx-type topological net with irregular cages, which the bulk materials show high phase purity, excellent thermo/aqua-stability and intense fluorescence. The luminescent MOF was studied for the highly sensitive detection of trace amounts of Fe3+ ions and nitrobenzene and shows high KSV values of 4.653 × 104 and 5.724 × 104, respectively. It was also demonstrated that MOF-1 possesses superior probing ability towards nine other nitroaromatic explosives with remarkable quenching percentages. These results offer a new possibility for the potential multiple recognition of various chemical substances in human body and water systems by utilizing novel dual-functionalized luminescent MOF sensors.

A three-dimensional Cd(II)–organic framework, formula as [Cd(tib)2∙(NO3)2]∙4DMF (tib = 1,3,5-tri(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene and DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide), has been successfully constructed by solvothermal synthesis. The as-made complex has been investigated and characterized by single X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analyses, luminescent spectra, and UV-Vis adsorption spectra. By virtue of its stability and luminescent property, this complex can used as a luminescent sensor toward picric acid and nitrofurantoin. The calculated KSV value is approximate 1.29 × 104 M–1 with the R2 value of 0.9946 for picric acid and 3.02 × 104 M–1 with the R2 value of 0.9973 for nitrofurantoin. Meanwhile, this as-synthesized complex has good recyclability.
