Abstract Due to the increasingly serious water environment pollution, the difficulty of Water Quality Monitoring (abbreviated as WQM for convenience) is also constantly increasing, which puts forward more requirements for the capabilities of various aspects of WQM systems. However, the current WQM method has drawbacks such as slow speed, long monitoring time, complex operation, poor stability, and the inability to obtain accurate information on water pollution in the first time, as well as the generation of toxic and harmful secondary pollutants after some measurement parameters are tested. To address these issues and ensure water quality safety, this paper investigated the algorithm for monitoring water quality parameters using artificial intelligence data mining optical systems. This article applied an artificial intelligence data mining system to detect water quality and designed various system through this method to improve system performance. To verify the actual effectiveness of artificial intelligence data mining systems, this article selected 10 water plants as experimental research subjects and compared the differences between traditional WQM methods and WQM methods based on artificial intelligence data mining systems in terms of WQM time, accuracy, sensitivity, and protective performance. The experimental results showed that the optical system based on artificial intelligence data mining took an average of 2.7 days in WQM and the average accuracy was 85.95%. The average sensitivity value was 84.19% and the average protective score was 8.46 points. This indicated that artificial intelligence data mining optical technology had vital significance and value for WQM.

The year 2023 has become the warmest year on global record. As the Antarctic and Arctic are sensitive regions to global warming, the climate changes in 2023 in these regions have attracted widespread attention. In this study, using observations, reanalysis and remote sensing data, we reported detailed polar climate changes in 2023, including warming, sea ice, atmospheric composition and extreme events. Antarctic exhibited large east‒west regional differences and the coexistence of extreme warm and cold events. In Coats Land, Queen Maud Land and the Antarctic Peninsula, three and seven stations recorded the second and third highest autumn air temperatures in history, respectively. The Amundsen–Scott station experienced extreme warming event in July, with the temperature increasing by 40 °C in one day. Abnormal cooling was evident in the Ross Sea and neighboring regions which were predominantly winter (June–August) cold anomalies, with Marylin Station reaching the lowest winter temperature in history. The Arctic experienced the warmest summer after 1979, with an overall distribution of ‘warm land‒cold sea’ on annual average. Compared with the 1991–2020 average, the annual air temperature anomalies reached more than 2 °C in northern Canada and the Barents Sea–Kara Sea coast. Abnormal high summer temperature caused most severe wildfires in Canada on record and second largest daily cumulative melt area over the Greenland ice Sheet daily post-1979. Polar sea ice continued to decrease rapidly, with minimum sea ice extent in Antarctic and Arctic ranking the first and sixth lowest post-1979. For melt season, Arctic Ocean sea ice began to melt later in 2023 than the 2011–2023 average, and freeze onset was delayed due to high temperatures in summer and autumn. Additionally, the status of polar atmospheric greenhouse gases remains bleak, and major greenhouse gas concentrations continue to increase. The Antarctic ozone hole in 2023 formed approximately 10 d earlier and lasted longer than the 1979–2023 average, with a maximum daily area of 2.6 × 107 km2 on 21 September. This summary of polar climate changes in 2023 will help people better understand global climate change and draw attention to polar regions.

Abstract Water quality monitoring of rivers is necessary in order to properly manage their basins so that steps can be taken to control the amount of pollutants and bring them to the allowable level. The ARIMA (autoregressive integrated moving average) model does not consider nonlinear patterns in modeling water quality components. Also, in modeling using the MLP (Multilayer Perceptrons) model, both linear and nonlinear pattern are not controlled equally. Therefore, in the present study, linear time series models (ARIMA), MLP model, and a hybrid model of MLP and ARIMA optimized by a Grasshopper optimization algorithm are used to predict water quality components in the statistical period of 2011–2019. In the proposed hybrid method, the ability of the ARIMA and the MLP model are exploited. Observational water quality data for forecasting time series in the hybrid method include dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and boron over 108 months. Since, the hybrid model is capable of realizing the nonlinear essence of complicated time series, it makes more reliable forecasts. In the hybrid model, the correlation coefficients between the observational data and the predicted values are 0.9 for dissolved oxygen, 0.91 for water temperature, and 0.91 for boron. To compare the three ARIMA, MLP, and hybrid models, the accuracy indices of each model are calculated. The results show that the hybrid model’s higher accuracy compared with the other two models.

Dalian boasts deep-water coastline and fishery resources and is rich in offshore biological resources. Regarding carbon sink fisheries, as the city with the longest coastline in China, Dalian has blue-carbon resources such as marine shellfish and macroalgae and is uniquely positioned to develop the natural conditions required for a blue-carbon economy. The seawater aquaculture industry in Dalian has formed a diversified aquaculture system with diversified modes and species. The aquaculture of scallops, Undaria pinnatifida, and mussels holds the leading position in China, and the production scale and output of scallops and U. pinnatifida account for more than 95% of the total output from the country. Dalian has become an outstanding representative of China's sea ranch construction. By the end of 2020, Dalian had 22 state-level sea ranch demonstration zones, which is the largest number of sea ranches in the country at the municipal level. Dalian's green ecological aquaculture industry is an important offshore sink-boosting resource, with the industrial foundation and capacity necessary for the development of a blue-carbon economy. In 2022, Dalian's mariculture area was 4.57×105 hm2 its mariculture production was 2.08 million tons, and the total economic output value of its fishery industry was 76.60 billion yuan, which makes Dalian's mariculture production the highest in the country. However, no report assesses the carbon sink capacity of marine shellfish and macroalgae in Dalian. Therefore, this study selected the main aquaculture shellfish species (scallop, oyster, clam, blood clam, mussel, Saccharina japonica, and U. pinnatifida) in Dalian in 2022 as the research object and calculated carbon sink capacity. The aim of this analysis was to provide a scientific basis for the contribution to and capacity of shellfish aquaculture in Dalian and provide a theoretical foundation and technological support for the development of carbon-sink fisheries in Liaoning Province. The results show that in 2022, the total carbon sink capacity of marine shellfish and macroalgae in Dalian reached 826, 900 t, of which the net carbon sink represented 538, 400 t and the removed carbon represented 261, 500 t, which is equivalent to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 1, 974, 300 t and has a value of carbon aggregation equal to 79, 447, 100 yuan. Shellfish aquaculture production in Dalian accounted for approximately 64.48% of the province's total aquaculture production, with a carbon sink contribution rate of 55.58%; macroalgae production accounted for 94.75% of the province's total, with a carbon sink contribution rate as high as 94.68%. Among algae and shellfish in Dalian, kelp and clams had the highest carbon sinks, representing 66.12% and 31.37%, respectively, of the entire carbon sinks of algae and shellfish in Liaoning Province. Mussels, as a fishery shellfish with high carbon content, represented only 0.72% of the total carbon sink in Dalian due to factors such as small farming areas and low production. Additionally, it is recommended to strengthen the aquaculture of algae and mussels with high carbon sink contribution rates and to promote the integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) of shellfish and macroalgae to optimize the structure of the aquaculture industry (aquaculture species, spatial layout) in Dalian while realizing the effective expansion of carbon sinks of marine organisms, changing the pattern of carbon circulation in the aquaculture industry, and promoting the healthy development of aquaculture in Dalian.

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a precursor to the development of many diseases (atherosclerosis, diabetes, etc.). It is marked by disruptions in glucose and lipid metabolism, along with hypertension. Numerous types of risk factors contribute to the development of the MetS, inflammation and insulin resistance are present throughout the metabolic abnormalities. Chrysanthemum indicum L. is a traditional Chinese plant used for both tea and medicine, known for its high content of total flavonoids, which are important secondary metabolites. Our research led to the extraction of a Buddleoside-Rich Chrysanthemum indicum L. extract (BUDE) which has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. Nonetheless, the specific role and mechanism of BUDE in preventing MetS remain unclear. Methods The study initially evaluated the role of BUDE in preventing MetS. Subsequently, it investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of BUDE in the liver and pancreas in response to unhealthy diets. It then examined the level of insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell function induced by inflammation. Additionally, an lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophage inflammation model was used to further investigate the ameliorative effects of BUDE in inflammation. Results BUDE has hypotensive, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. It can also resolve the imbalance between macrophage subpopulations, impede the triggering of the NF-κB signaling pathway, reduce the secretion of inflammatory mediators, ameliorate insulin resistance, and safeguard organs such as the liver and pancreas from inflammatory damage. These effects collectively contribute to preventing the development of MetS. Discussion BUDE has the ability to modulate macrophage-mediated inflammation, leading to improved insulin resistance. Additionally, it delivers antihypertensive, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic effects, offering a potential for preventing MetS.

The prediction of mine water inflow is of great significance to the safe production of coal mines. The accurate selection of hydrogeological parameters and the selection of calculation methods have a great influence on the accurate prediction of mine water inflow. At the same time, taking into account the actual mining of the mine, the water inflow is not stable from the early stage of mining, but dynamic. In order to improve the accuracy of water inflow prediction and better serve coal mining, based on the analysis of geological and hydrogeological conditions of Donggou Coal Mine in Xinjiang and the selection of accurate hydrogeological parameters, two water inflow prediction methods suitable for Donggou Coal Mine were selected for comparative analysis. The calculation results show that : ① The water inflow calculated by the unsteady flow water release-section flow method shows dynamic change characteristics. After the mining intensity is stable, the change range becomes smaller and finally tends to be stable. ② The predicted water inflow calculated by the large well method and the unsteady flow water release-section flow method is 3396 m3/d, 599.87 − 612.9 m3/d and the actual water inflow 480 m3/d, respectively. The difference with the actual value is in ascending order of magnitude 607.5% > 24.97% − 27.69% ; ③ According to the verification and analysis of the water inflow data generated by the actual mining of the mine, the water inflow calculated by the unsteady flow water release-section flow method is basically consistent with the water inflow generated by the actual mining. The accuracy of the water inflow prediction results is in the order of unsteady flow water release-section flow method > large well method ; ④ In the case of sufficient data and accurate parameters, it is recommended to give priority to the unsteady flow release-section flow method to calculate the water inflow. It is recommended to use the large well method first under the condition that the water supply boundary conditions are poor and meet the requirements of the large well method. On the one hand, the calculation results fully verify the accuracy of the unsteady flow release-section flow method. On the other hand, it provides a reference for the calculation of water inflow in coal mines, and also provides data support for the safe production of Donggou Coal Mine.

ABSTRACT Background MiRNA let7d‐5p has been recently reported to be abnormally expressed in diabetes‐associated atherosclerosis (AS). However, it still remains unknown how let7d‐5p contributes to the process of atherosclerosis. Methods Twenty fresh tissues and a total of 28 wax block specimens from carotid endarterectomy procedures were obtained from the Luoyang Central Hospital affiliated to Zhengzhou University. The expression of let7d‐5p was assessed using quantitative RT‐PCR (qRT‐PCR). A series of in vitro experiments was used to determine the roles of let7d‐5p knockdown and overexpression in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Results We discovered that the carotid plaques from diabetic patients had lower expression levels of miR let7d‐5p. In VSMCs, the expression of miRNA let7d‐5p was significantly lower in high glucose conditions compared with low glucose situations. The proliferation and migration of VSMCs were also inhibited by the overexpression of let7d‐5p, whereas the opposite was true when let7d‐5p was inhibited, according to gain and loss of function studies. Mechanically, let7d‐5p might activate the GSK3β/β‐catenin signaling pathway via binding to the high mobility group AT‐Hook 2 (HMGA2) mRNA in VSMCs. Additionally, GLP‐1RA liraglutide may prevent the migration and proliferation of VSMCs by raising let7d‐5p levels. Conclusions High glucose stimulated the proliferation and migration of VSMCs by regulating the let7d‐5p/HMGA2/GSK3β/β‐catenin pathway, and liraglutide may slow atherosclerosis by increasing the levels of miR let7d‐5p.

PurposeSepsis is an unusual systemic reaction to what is sometimes an otherwise ordinary infection, and it probably represents a pattern of response by the immune system to injury. However, the relationship between biomarkers and sepsis remains unclear. This study aimed to find potential molecular biomarkers, which could do some help to patients with sepsis.MethodsThe sepsis dataset GSE28750, GSE57065 was downloaded from the GEO database, and ten patients with or without sepsis from our hospital were admitted for RNA-seq and the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened. The Metascape database was used for functional enrichment analysis and was used to found the differential gene list. Protein-protein interaction network was used and further analyzed by using Cytoscape and STRING. Logistic regression and Correlation analysis were used to find the potential molecular biomarkers.ResultsTaking the intersection of the three datasets yielded 287 differential genes. The enrichment results included Neutrophil degranulation, leukocyte activation, immune effectors process, positive regulation of immune response, regulation of leukocyte activation. The top 10 key genes of PPI connectivity were screened using cytoHubba plugin, which were KLRK1, KLRB1, IL7R, GZMA, CD27, PRF1, CD8A, CD2, IL2RB, and GZMB. All of the hub genes are higher expressed in health group of different databases. Logistic regression showed that IL7R, GZMA and CD8A proteins were analyzed and all of them were statistically significant. Correlation analysis showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between IL7R, GZMA and CD8A.ConclusionKLRK1, KLRB1, IL7R, GZMA, CD27, PRF1, CD8A, CD2, IL2RB, GZMB are key genes in sepsis, which associated with the development of sepsis. However, IL7R, GZMA and CD8A may serve as the attractively potential molecular biomarkers for sepsis.

Abstract Gene‐editing technology has become a transformative tool for the precise manipulation of biological genomes and holds great significance in the field of animal disease‐resistant breeding. Mastitis, a prevalent disease in animal husbandry, imposes a substantial economic burden on the global dairy industry. In this study, a regulatory sequence gene editing breeding strategy for the successful creation of a gene‐edited dairy (GED) goats with enhanced mastitis resistance using the ISDra2‐TnpB system and dairy goats as the model animal is proposed. This included the targeted integration of an innate inflammatory regulatory sequence (IRS) into the promoter region of the lysozyme (LYZ) gene. Upon Escherichia Coli (E. coli) mammary gland infection, GED goats exhibited increased LYZ expression, showing robust anti‐mastitis capabilities, mitigating PANoptosis activation, and alleviating blood‐milk‐barrier (BMB) damage. Notably, LYZ is highly expressed only in E. coli infection. This study marks the advent of anti‐mastitis gene‐edited animals with exogenous‐free gene expression and demonstrates the feasibility of the gene‐editing strategy proposed in this study. In addition, it provides a novel gene‐editing blueprint for developing disease‐resistant strains, focusing on disease specificity and biosafety while providing a research basis for the widespread application of the ISDra2‐TnpB system.

Background: In the early stages of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), the pathogenesis involves abnormal angiogenesis in the glomerulus. Hirudin, as a natural specific inhibitor of thrombin, has been shown in previous studies to inhibit the migration of various tumor endothelial cells and abnormal angiogenesis. However, its role in DKD remains unclear. Methods: The effects of hirudin in DKD were studied using spontaneous type 2 diabetic db/db mice (which develop kidney damage at 8 weeks). Network pharmacology was utilized to identify relevant targets. An in vitro high glucose model was established using mouse glomerular endothelial cells (MGECs) to investigate the effects of hirudin on the migration and angiogenic capacity of MGECs. Results: Hirudin can ameliorate kidney damage in db/db mice. Network pharmacology suggests its potential association with the VEGFA/VEGFR2 pathway. Western blot and immunohistochemistry demonstrated elevated protein expression levels of VEGFA, VEGFR2, AQP1, and CD31 in db/db mice, while hirudin treatment reduced their expression. In the MGECs high glucose model, hirudin may reverse the enhanced migration and angiogenic capacity of MGECs in a high glucose environment by altering the expression of VEGFA, VEGFR2, AQP1, and CD31. Moreover, the drug effect gradually increases with higher concentrations of hirudin. Conclusions: This study suggests that hirudin can improve early-stage diabetic kidney disease kidney damage by inhibiting the migration and angiogenesis of glomerular endothelial cells, thereby further expanding the application scope of hirudin. Additionally, the study found increased expression of AQP1 in DKD, providing a new perspective for further research on the potential pathogenesis of DKD.

Abstract The immunoprotective components control COVID-19 disease severity, as well as long-term adaptive immunity maintenance and subsequent reinfection risk discrepancies across initial COVID-19 severity, remain unclarified. Here, we longitudinally analyzed SARS-CoV-2-specific immune effectors during the acute infection and convalescent phases of 165 patients with COVID-19 categorized by severity. We found that early and robust SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses ameliorate disease progression and shortened hospital stay, while delayed and attenuated virus-specific CD8+ T cell responses are prominent severe COVID-19 features. Delayed antiviral antibody generation rather than titer level associates with severe outcomes. Conversely, initial COVID-19 severity imprints the long-term maintenance of SARS-CoV-2-specific adaptive immunity, demonstrating that severe convalescents exhibited more sustained virus-specific antibodies and memory T cell responses compared to mild/moderate counterparts. Moreover, initial COVID-19 severity inversely correlates with SARS-CoV-2 reinfection risk. Overall, our study unravels the complicated interaction between temporal characteristics of virus-specific T cell responses and COVID-19 severity to guide future SARS-CoV-2 wave management.

Abstract The structure and mechanism of the human visual system contain rich treasures, and surprising effects can be achieved by simulating the human visual system. In this article, starting from the human visual system, we compare and discuss the discrepancies between the human visual system and traditional machine vision systems. Given the wide variety and large volume of visual information, the use of non-von Neumann structured, flexible neuromorphic vision sensors can effectively compensate for the limitations of traditional machine vision systems based on the von Neumann architecture. Firstly, this article addresses the emulation of retinal functionality and provides an overview of the principles and circuit implementation methods of non-von Neumann computing architectures. Secondly, in terms of mimicking the retinal surface structure, this article introduces the fabrication approach for flexible sensor arrays. Finally, this article analyzes the challenges currently faced by non-von Neumann flexible neuromorphic vision sensors and offers a perspective on their future development.

As major forming elements of γ′ strengthening phase, Al and Ti are critical for achieving superior properties of Ni-based superalloy. However, Al + Ti over 6 wt% leads to poor printability and cracking during additive manufacturing. In this work, the printability and properties of a nickel-based superalloy with Al + Ti reaching 7 wt% is synchronously improved via alloying minor Sc, the mechanism behind that is revealed by investigating the effects of Sc on the grain size, precipitation, and tensile fracture behavior of that nickel-based superalloy. This work provides a promising alternative method for optimizing the performance of superalloys prepared by additive manufacturing.

Abstract A growing number of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) has been advocated for urban flood risk management (FRM). However, whether NbS for FRM (NbS-FRM) achieves both social and ecological co-benefits remains largely unknown. We here propose and use a conceptual framework with a coupled social-ecological perspective to explore and identify such “win-win” potential in NbS-FRM. Through a scoping-review we find that ecological FRM measures are unevenly distributed around the world, and those solely targeting flood mitigation may have unintended negative consequences for society and ecosystems. In elaborating this framework with evidence from the reviewed studies, we find that NbS-FRM has the potential to provide both social and ecological co-benefits, with remaining gaps including a lack of resilience thinking, inadequate consideration of environmental changes, and limited collaborative efforts to manage trade-offs. The proposed framework shows how to move forward to leverage NbS for equitable and sustainable FRM with improved human well-being and ecosystem health.

Abstract Traditional approaches to coastal defence often struggle to reduce the risks of accelerated climate change. Incorporating nature-based components into coastal defences may enhance adaptation to climate change with added benefits, but we need to compare their performance against conventional hard measures. We conduct a meta-analysis that compares the performances of hard, hybrid, soft and natural measures for coastal defence across different functions of risk reduction, climate change mitigation, and cost-effectiveness. Hybrid and soft measures offer higher risk reduction and climate change mitigation benefits than unvegetated natural systems, while performing on par with natural measures. Soft and hybrid measures are more cost-effective than hard measures, while hybrid measures provide the highest hazard reduction among all measures. All coastal defence measures have a positive economic return over a 20-year period. Mindful of risk context, our results provide strong an evidence-base for integrating and upscaling nature-based components into coastal defences in lower risk areas.

Landfast sea ice (LFSI) is sensitive to local climate change, making it an important component of the cryosphere system. In this study, the LFSI around the pan-Arctic domain was simulated from 1979 to 2021 using a well-validated snow and ice thermodynamic model (HIGHTSI) under the framework of the Fast Ice Prediction System (FIPS), forced by the ERA5 reanalysis. The simulation results agree well with the in-situ observations in the Canadian Arctic, with a mean error of −0.06 ± 0.29 m for ice thickness and −0.04 ± 0.12 m for snow depth. A decrease of −2.8 ± 0.4 cm/10a in thickness and −16.2 ± 1.5 km3/a in volume for the Arctic LFSI was modeled during this period. There was significant spatial variability among the different domains, with the fastest decline found in the Vilkitsky Strait. The modeled snow depth shows large interannual and spatial variations, which was confirmed by other modeling results. The spatiotemporal variations in both air temperature and precipitation are the driving factors for the multi-decadal variations in LFSI thickness. The decreasing air temperature during the 2010s aligned with a slower thickness decrease and a slight volume increase for LFSI, which agreed with the pan-Arctic sea ice pattern.

ABSTRACTInformation on Arctic sea-ice motion in summer is critical for operational sea-ice monitoring and prediction and commercial navigation. Affected by the melting of the sea-ice surface, the accuracy and spatial coverage of the sea-ice velocity (SIV) retrieved by brightness temperature (TB) during the melting period are always lower than in winter. Our research indicates that the lack of ice–water discrimination in summer for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) 36 GHz TB is the main reason for the poor quality of its SIV results. We propose a new SIV retrieval scheme based on the polarization difference (P) of the 36 GHz TB. The 36-P SIV has a higher spatial coverage than that derived from 18-H, 36-H and 36-V SIVs and a higher maximum cross-correlation coefficient than 36 GH TB-derived SIVs. Compared with buoy and Synthetic Aperture Radar SIVs, the 36-P SIV’s error is close to that of 18-H SIV and significantly lower than that of 36 TB SIV. Therefore, our results indicate that 36-P is more competitive than the 36 GHz TB in SIV retrieval in summer. Further analysis shows that our proposed scheme is compatible with the two current mainstream SIV tracking algorithms, demonstrating its great potential for future summer SIV retrieval.

IntroductionBoth the incidence and mortality rates associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have progressively increased worldwide. A nucleic acid testing system was developed in response, enabling swift and precise detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and its MRSA infection status. This facilitates improved prevention and control of MRSA infections.MethodsIn this work, we introduce a novel assay platform developed by integrating Pyrococcus furiosus Argonaute (PfAgo) with recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), which was designed for the simultaneous detection of the nuc and mecA genes in MRSA.ResultsThis innovative approach enables visual MRSA detection within 55 mins, boasting a detection limit of 102 copies/μL. Characterized by its high specificity, the platform accurately identifies MRSA infections without cross-reactivity to other clinical pathogens, highlighting its unique capability for S. aureus infection diagnostics amidst bacterial diversity. Validation of this method was performed on 40 clinical isolates, demonstrating a 95.0% accuracy rate in comparison to the established Vitek2-COMPACT system.DiscussionThe RPA-PfAgo platform has emerged as a superior diagnostic tool, offering enhanced sensitivity, specificity, and identification efficacy for MRSA detection. Our findings underscore the potential of this platform to significantly improve the diagnosis and management of MRSA infection.

Existing semi-empirical formulas for predicting punching shear capacity in FRP bar reinforced concrete flat slabs without shear reinforcement often prove inaccurate and unstable. This is primarily due to limited modeling data, inadequate consideration of key variables and neglect of complex nonlinear relationships. To address these challenges, this study delves into the utilization of advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms to offer precise and dependable estimates of punching shear capacity in such structural components. The study initially compiled a comprehensive database comprising 165 sets of test data, integrating eight crucial variables for model development. Subsequently, four data-driven models including back propagation artificial neural network (BPANN), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF) and gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) were formulated to estimate the shear capacity. The efficacy of these models was assessed in comparison to existing prediction formulas. To interpret the models, this study also introduced shapley additive explanation (SHAP) and partial dependence plot (PDP) to quantitatively evaluate the influence of variables on predicted results. Research findings suggest that: (a) Among 25 existing formulas, Ju et al.’s approach performs notably well, with R2, Pre/Exp, MAPE and RMSE values at 0.76, 1.02, 22.2 % and 142.8 kN, respectively. (b) ML models surpass traditional formulas in predictive accuracy, with R2, Pre/Exp, MAPE and RMSE values ranging from 0.89 to 0.93, 1.03–1.09, 4.8–9.5 % and 55.4–69.0 kN, respectively. The GBRT model demonstrates the highest precision. (c) SHAP analysis of the GBRT model reveals that effective slab height and column section aspect ratio are pivotal variables influencing punching shear capacity. (d) PDP analysis quantitatively illustrates how punching shear capacity varies with each key variable.

Abstracts: Objectives: To elucidate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of Atractylodes macrocephala extract crystallize (BZEP) and BZEP self-microemulsion (BZEPWR) on metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) induced by “high sugar, high fat, and excessive alcohol consumption” based on the gut–liver axis HDL/LPS signaling pathway. Methods: In this study, BZEP and BZEPWR were obtained via isolation, purification, and microemulsification. Furthermore, an anthropomorphic MAFLD rat model of “high sugar, high fat, and excessive alcohol consumption” was established. The therapeutic effects of BZEPWR and BZEP on the model rats were evaluated in terms of liver function, lipid metabolism (especially HDL-C), serum antioxidant indexes, and liver and intestinal pathophysiology. To determine the lipoproteins in the serum sample, the amplitudes of a plurality of NMR spectra were derived via deconvolution of the composite methyl signal envelope to yield HDL-C subclass concentrations. The changes in intestinal flora were detected via 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. In addition, the gut–liver axis HDL/LPS signaling pathway was validated using immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and western blot. Results: The findings established that BZEPWR and BZEP improved animal signs, serum levels of liver enzymes (ALT and AST), lipid metabolism (TC, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C), and antioxidant indexes (GSH, SOD, and ROS). In addition, pathological damage to the liver, colon, and ileum was ameliorated, and the intestinal barrier function of the model rats was restored. At the genus level, BZEPWR and BZEP exerted positive effects on beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and norank_f__Muribaculaceae, and inhibitory effects on harmful bacteria, such as unclassified_f__Lachnospiraceae and Blautia. Twenty HDL-C subspecies were detected, and their levels were differentially increased in both BZEPWR and BZEP groups, with BZEPWR exhibiting a stronger elevating effect on specific HDL-C subspecies. Also, the gut–liver axis HDL/LPS signaling pathway was studied, which indicated that BZEPWR and BZEP significantly increased the expressions of ABCA1, LXR, occludin, and claudin-1 proteins in the gut and serum levels of HDL-C. Concomitantly, the levels of LPS in the serum and TLR4, Myd88, and NF-κB proteins in the liver were decreased. Conclusion: BZEPWR and BZEP exert restorative and reversal effects on the pathophysiological damage to the gut–liver axis in MAFLD rats, and the therapeutic mechanism may be related to the regulation of the intestinal flora and the HDL/LPS signaling pathway.

Purpose: Programmed cell death protein-1 ligand (PD-L1) is an important prognostic predictor for immunotherapy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aimed to develop a non-invasive deep learning and radiomics model based on positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) to predict PD-L1 expression in NSCLC. Methods: A total of 136 patients with NSCLC between January 2021 and September 2022 were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomly divided into the training dataset and the validation dataset in a ratio of 7:3. Radiomics feature and deep learning feature were extracted from their PET/CT images. The Mann-whitney U-test, Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator algorithm and Spearman correlation analysis were used to select the top significant features. Then we developed a radiomics model, a deep learning model, and a fusion model based on the selected features. The performance of three models were compared by the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. Results: Of the patients, 42 patients were PD-L1 negative and 94 patients were PD-L1 positive. A total of 2446 radiomics features and 4096 deep learning features were extracted per patient. In the training dataset, the fusion model achieved a highest AUC (0.954, 95% confident internal [CI]: 0.890–0.986) compared with the radiomics model (0.829, 95%CI: 0.738–0.898) and the deep learning model (0.935, 95%CI: 0.865–0.975). In the validation dataset, the AUC of the fusion model (0.910, 95% CI: 0.779–0.977) was also higher than that of the radiomics model (0.785, 95% CI: 0.628–0.897) and the deep learning model (0.867, 95% CI: 0.724–0.952). Conclusion: The PET/CT-based deep learning radiomics model can predict the PD-L1 expression accurately in NSCLC patients, and provides a non-invasive tool for clinicians to select positive PD-L1 patients.

Abstract Polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) are type-3 copper enzymes and are involved in many biological processes. However, the potential functions of PPOs in pollination are not fully understood. In this work, we have screened 13 PPO members in Nicotiana. tabacum (named NtPPO1-13, NtPPOs) to explore their characteristics and functions in pollination. The results show that NtPPOs are closely related to PPOs in Solanaceae and share conserved domains except NtPPO4. Generally, NtPPOs are diversely expressed in different tissues and are distributed in pistil and male gametes. Specifically, NtPPO9 and NtPPO10 are highly expressed in the pistil and mature anther. In addition, the expression levels and enzyme activities of NtPPOs are increased after N. tabacum self-pollination. Knockdown of NtPPOs would affect pollen growth after pollination, and the purines and flavonoid compounds are accumulated in self-pollinated pistil. Altogether, our findings demonstrate that NtPPOs potentially play a role in the pollen tube growth after pollination through purines and flavonoid compounds, and will provide new insights into the role of PPOs in plant reproduction.

Abstract Objectives To systematically review the evidence about the effect of haloperidol on postoperative delirium in elderly patients. Methods PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were used to find concerned studies for meta-analysis. The main outcome was the incidence of postoperative delirium, and the secondary outcomes were side effects of haloperidol and the length of hospital stay. The meta-analyses were conducted using the Review Manager Version 5.1. This study was conducted based on the PRISMA statement. Results Eight RCTs (1569 patients) were included in the meta-analysis. There was a significant difference in the incidence of postoperative delirium between haloperidol and control groups (OR = 0.62, 95%CI 0.48–0.80, P = 0.0002, I2 = 20%). In addition, side effects of haloperidol and the duration of hospitalization were comparable (OR = 0.58, 95%CI 0.25–1.35, P = 0.21, I2 = 0%; MD =-0.01, 95%CI -0.16-0.15, P = 0.92, I2 = 28%). Subgroup analysis implied the effect of haloperidol on postoperative delirium might vary with the dose (5 mg daily: OR = 0.40, 95%CI 0.22–0.71, P = 0.002, I2 = 0%;

Abstract Photocatalytic overall water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen is desirable for long-term renewable, sustainable and clean fuel production on earth. Metal sulfides are considered as ideal hydrogen-evolved photocatalysts, but their component homogeneity and typical sulfur instability cause an inert oxygen production, which remains a huge obstacle to overall water-splitting. Here, a distortion-evoked cation-site oxygen doping of ZnIn2S4 (D-O-ZIS) creates significant electronegativity differences between adjacent atomic sites, with S1 sites being electron-rich and S2 sites being electron-deficient in the local structure of S1–S2–O sites. The strong charge redistribution character activates stable oxygen reactions at S2 sites and avoids the common issue of sulfur instability in metal sulfide photocatalysis, while S1 sites favor the adsorption/desorption of hydrogen. Consequently, an overall water-splitting reaction has been realized in D-O-ZIS with a remarkable solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 0.57%, accompanying a ~ 91% retention rate after 120 h photocatalytic test. In this work, we inspire an universal design from electronegativity differences perspective to activate and stabilize metal sulfide photocatalysts for efficient overall water-splitting.

Abstract Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine and metabolic disorder that is common in women of reproductive age. The clinical features of PCOS include hyperandrogenemia and polycystic ovarian changes. Bailing capsule (BL), a proprietary Chinese medicine that contains fermented Cordyceps sinensis powder, has been applied to treat PCOS. However, the specific active ingredients of BL and its mechanisms of action are yet to be elucidated. Methods Initially, the effectiveness of BL on PCOS model mice was evaluated. Subsequently, the active ingredients of BL were searched in the TCMSP and TCM Systems Pharmacology databases, and their targets were predicted using Swiss Target Prediction and SEA databases. Furthermore, the GEO gene database was used to screen for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to PCOS. Data from Gene Card, OMIM, DDT, and Drugbank databases were then combined to establish a PCOS disease gene library. Cross targets were imported into the STRING database to construct a protein–protein interaction network. In addition, GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses were performed using Metascape and DAVID databases and visualized using Cytoscape software and R 4.2.3. The core targets were docked with SYBYL-X software, and their expressions in PCOS mice were further verified using qPCR. Results The core active ingredients of BL were identified to be linoleyl acetate, cholesteryl palmitate, arachidonic acid, among others. Microarray data sets from four groups containing disease and normal samples were obtained from the GEO database. A total of 491 DEGs and 106 drug–disease cross genes were selected. Estrous cycle and ovarian lesions were found to be improved in PCOS model mice following BL treatment. While the levels of testosterone, progesterone, and prolactin decreased, that of estradiol increased. qPCR findings indicated that the expressions of JAK2, PPARG, PI3K, and AKT1 were upregulated, whereas those of ESR1 and IRS1 were downregulated in PCOS model mice. After the administration of BL, the expressions of associated genes were regulated. This study demonstrated that BL exerted anti-PCOS effects via PIK3CA, ESR1, AKT, PPARG, and IRS1 targets affecting PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. Discussion This research clarified the multicomponent, multitarget, and multichannel action of BL and provided a theoretical reference for further investigations on its pharmacological basis and molecular mechanisms against PCOS.

This paper reports five new species of Phlugiolopsis Zeuner, 1940 from Sichuan, Yunnan and Guangxi in China, i.e., Phlugiolopsis luojishanensis sp. nov., Phlugiolopsis lata sp. nov., Phlugiolopsis rongshuiensis sp. nov., Phlugiolopsis acuta sp. nov. and Phlugiolopsis daweishanensis sp. nov. We present a redescription of the male of Phlugiolopsis punctata Wang, Li & Liu, 2012, describe the female of Phlugiolopsis punctata Wang, Li & Liu, 2012 and the male of Phlugiolopsis pentagonis Bian, Shi & Chang, 2013 for the first time. In addition, images illustrating the morphology of these species and seven previously described species are provided. The distribution map of the genus Phlugiolopsis from China is also provided.

Leptadenia hastata (Pers.) Decne is a commonly used food source and prescribed as a traditional African medicine for treatment of various diseases, such as diabetes, skin disorders, wounds, and ulcers. However, quality control has become a bottleneck restricting the therapeutic development and utilization of this plant. In this study, a reliable method for qualitative and quantitative determination of components in Leptadenia hastata was established. The components of L. hastata were profiled using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadruple time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS). Subsequently, an ultra-high performance tandem diode array detector (UHPLC-DAD)-based method was used for simultaneous quantitative analysis of five major constituents in six batches of L. hastata samples. As a result, 35 compounds were tentatively identified. The quantities of the five constituents (vicenin-Ⅱ, orientin, schaftoside, chrysin 6-C-arabinoside 8-C-glucoside, chrysin 6-C-glucoside 8-C-arabinoside) were determined as 124.8–156.9 μg/g, 170.5–216.0 μg/g, 61.31–93.73 μg/g, 85.13–119.3 μg/g and 99.82–129.4 μg/g, respectively. This method offers a successful strategy for precise and effective evaluation of the constituents of L. hastata, providing a robust foundation for holistic quality assessment of medicinal plants.

Aurora kinase A, as a pro-carcinogenic in gastric cancer and glioma kinase, is enhanced in several human tumors. However, it's regulatory mechanism in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the expression status, functional roles, and molecular mechanisms of AURKA in ESCC development. AURKA expression was analyzed by the screening of the GEO database and detected using an immunohistochemical method. The biological function of AURKA on ESCC was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Western blot assay, malondialdehyde (MDA), iron, and glutathione (GSH) kits were utilized to assess changes in ferroptosis. Database analysis results showed that AURKA was a differential gene in ESCC and was highly expressed in human ESCC tissues. Functionally, AURKA knockdown decreased ESCC cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, when AURKA was knockdown, cells were more correctly blocked in the G2/M phase, and the ferroptosis-related MDA and Fe increased, whereas the GSH reduced. Consistently, Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and solute carrier family 7a member 11 (SLC7A11) expression were downregulated by AURKA knockdown. However, ferroptosis inhibitor partially restore ESCC cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis caused by AURKA knockdown. AURKA knockdown enhances ferroptosis and acts against cancer progression in ESCC. AURKA acts as a tumor-promoting gene and may serve as potential target for ESCC treatment.

Aim: Atractylodes macrocephala Rhizome (AM) has been used to treat hyperlipidemia for centuries, but its functional components and mechanisms are not clear. This research aimed to investigate the active components in AM and the mechanisms that underlie its anti-hyperlipidemia effect. Methods: SD rats were fed a high-sucrose high-fat diet in conjunction with alcohol (HSHFDAC) along with different AM extracts (AMW, AMO, AME, and AMP) for 4 weeks. AM's active components were analyzed using multiple databases, and their mechanisms were explored through network pharmacology. The relationship between AM's effect of enhancing serum HDL-c and regulating the expression of reverse cholesterol transport (RCT)-related proteins (Apo-A1, LCAT, and SR-BI) was further validated in the HSHFDAC-induced hyperlipidemic rats. The kidney and liver functions of the rats were measured to evaluate the safety of AM. Results: AMO, mainly comprised of volatile and liposoluble components, contributed the most significant anti-hyperlipidemia effect among the four extracts obtained from AM, significantly improving the blood lipid profile. Network pharmacology analysis also suggested that volatile and liposoluble components, comprise AM's main active components and they might act on signaling pathways associated with elevated HDL-c. Validation experiments found that AMO substantially and dose-dependently increased HDL-c levels, upregulated the expression of Apo-A1, SR-BI, and LCAT, improved the pathological changes in the kidney and liver, and significantly reduced the serum creatinine levels in rats with hyperlipidemia. Conclusion: The main anti-hyperlipidemia active components of AM are its volatile and liposoluble components, which may enhance serum HDL-c by increasing the expression of the RCT-related proteins Apo-A1, LCAT, and SR-BI.

Abstract Background Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) remains a predominant cause of Japanese encephalitis (JE) globally. Its infection is usually accompanied by disrupted blood‒brain barrier (BBB) integrity and central nervous system (CNS) inflammation in a poorly understood pathogenesis. Productive JEV infection in brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) is considered the initial event of the virus in penetrating the BBB. Type I/III IFN and related factors have been described as negative regulators in CNS inflammation, whereas their role in JE remains ambiguous. Methods RNA-sequencing profiling (RNA-seq), real-time quantitative PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blotting analysis were performed to analyze the gene and protein expression changes between mock- and JEV-infected hBMECs. Bioinformatic tools were used to cluster altered signaling pathway members during JEV infection. The shRNA-mediated immune factor-knockdown hBMECs and the in vitro transwell BBB model were utilized to explore the interrelation between immune factors, as well as between immune factors and BBB endothelial integrity. Results RNA-Seq data of JEV-infected hBMECs identified 417, 1256, and 2748 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at 12, 36, and 72 h post-infection (hpi), respectively. The altered genes clustered into distinct pathways in gene ontology (GO) terms and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis, including host antiviral immune defense and endothelial cell leakage. Further investigation revealed that pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs, including TLR3, RIG-I, and MDA5) sensed JEV and initiated IRF/IFN signaling. IFNs triggered the expression of interferon-induced proteins with tetratricopeptide repeats (IFITs) via the JAK/STAT pathway. Distinct PRRs exert different functions in barrier homeostasis, while treatment with IFN (IFN-β and IFN-λ1) in hBMECs stabilizes the endothelial barrier by alleviating exogenous destruction. Despite the complex interrelationship, IFITs are considered nonessential in the IFN-mediated maintenance of hBMEC barrier integrity. Conclusions This research provided the first comprehensive description of the molecular mechanisms of host‒pathogen interplay in hBMECs responding to JEV invasion, in which type I/III IFN and related factors strongly correlated with regulating the hBMEC barrier and restricting JEV infection. This might help with developing an attractive therapeutic strategy in JE.

This study introduces a new integrated framework by incorporating the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology as the technological acceptance component, combined with satisfaction and perceived risk as the psychological acceptance components. The aim is to explore consumers’ behavioral intentions toward smart wearable devices and their expectations for the industry. The findings reveal that all research hypotheses were met as anticipated. Notably, the relatively low influence of Facilitating Conditions within the technological acceptance part and the prominent Perceived Functional Value within the psychological acceptance part highlight consumers’ concerns about the compatibility of smart wearable device ecosystems and their satisfaction with basic functionalities. This conclusion indicates that the market needs to address and improve the challenges posed by multi-brand product ecosystems and that addressing the lack of innovation reduces the emotional connection between products and consumers.

Abstract Solar‐blind ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors based on p‐organic/n‐Ga2O3 hybrid heterojunctions have attracted extensive attention recently. Herein, the multifunctional solar‐blind photodetector based on p‐type poly[N‐9′‐heptadecanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT)/n‐type amorphous Ga2O3 (a‐Ga2O3) is fabricated and investigated, which can work in the phototransistor mode coupling with self‐powered mode. With the introduction of PCDTBT, the dark current of such the a‐Ga2O3‐based photodetector is decreased to 0.48 pA. Meanwhile, the photoresponse parameters of the a‐Ga2O3‐based photodetector in the phototransistor mode to solar‐blind UV light are further increased, that is, responsivity (R), photo‐detectivity (D*), and external quantum efficiency (EQE) enhanced to 187 A W–1, 1.3 × 1016 Jones and 9.1 × 104 % under the weak light intensity of 11 μW cm–2, respectively. Thanks to the formation of the built‐in field in the p‐PCDTBT/n‐Ga2O3 type‐II heterojunction, the PCDTBT/Ga2O3 multifunctional photodetector shows self‐powered behavior. The responsivity of p‐PCDTBT/n‐Ga2O3 multifunctional photodetector is 57.5 mA W–1 at zero bias. Such multifunctional p‐n hybrid heterojunction‐based photodetectors set the stage for realizing high‐performance amorphous Ga2O3 heterojunction‐based photodetectors.

Supplier concentration (SUC) has disadvantage of vulnerability along with cost savings and efficiency. While current scholarship focus on the vulnerability of firms with centralized suppliers during the COVID-19 epidemic, there is no empirical study that explores the impact of post-disaster SUC on firm value as countries removing regional isolation policy. I focus on the impact of COVID-19 reopening policy on investor attitudes towards SUC after the resolution of a supply chain disruption crisis. I try to examine whether investors still perceive SUC as a risk signal or as a positive signal for rapid recovery. Using the event shock of China's reopening announcement and data on A-share listed companies, I find that SUC has a positive impact on cumulative abnormal returns at reopening. I also find that positive effect of SUC is more prominent for firms that benefit from a larger reduction in transaction costs due to the reopening policy. I also analyze the moderating effect and find that information intermediaries such as analysts and media attention amplify the positive effects of SUC. My research provides new perspective on achieving post-disaster value enhancement through SUC.

Packaging color entices and influences consumer perceptions and significantly affects the identification of products. Marketers manipulate the exterior packaging to influence consumer expectations, experiences, and behaviors. Building upon psychological literature on colors and emotions, we explored the influence of food packaging color and food type on consumers’ purchase intentions. Study 1 explored the interaction effects between food packaging color (warm vs. cold) and food type (vice foods vs. virtue foods) on consumers’ purchase intentions. Study 2 examined whether perceived fluency mediates the interaction effect of food packaging color and food type on consumers’ purchase intentions. The results showed that for vice foods, characterized by tastiness but unhealthiness, the utilization of warm-colored food packaging enhances consumer purchase intent. In contrast, for virtue foods that are healthful but lack gustatory appeal, the use of cold food packaging colors will lead to higher consumer purchase intent. Perceived fluency mediates the interaction effect of food packaging color and food type on consumers’ purchase intentions. This study will assist marketers to exploring a range of possibilities for packing color, impacting both the physiological and cognitive dimensions of consumer behavior related to food products, and offering practical implications for market managers.

Summary: Background: The impact of previous vaccination on protective immunity, duration, and immune imprinting in the context of BA.5-XBB.1.9.1 reinfection remains unknown. Methods: Based on a 2-year longitudinal cohort from vaccination, BA.5 infection and XBB reinfection, several immune effectors, including neutralizing antibodies (Nabs), antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), virus-specific T cell immunity were measured to investigate the impact of previous vaccination on host immunity induced by BA.5 breakthrough infection and BA.5-XBB.1.9.1 reinfection. Findings: In absence of BA.5 Nabs, plasma collected 3 months after receiving three doses of inactivated vaccine (I-I-I) showed high ADCC that protected hACE2-K18 mice from fatality and significantly reduced viral load in the lungs and brain upon BA.5 challenge, compared to plasma collected 12 months after I-I-I. Nabs against XBB.1.9.1 induced by BA.5 breakthrough infection were low at day 14 and decreased to a GMT of 10 at 4 months and 28% (9/32) had GMT ≤4, among whom 67% (6/9) were reinfected with XBB.1.9.1 within 1 month. However, 63% (20/32) were not reinfected with XBB.1.9.1 at 5 months post BA.5 infection. Interestingly, XBB.1.9.1 reinfection increased Nabs against XBB.1.9.1 by 24.5-fold at 14 days post-reinfection, which was much higher than that against BA.5 (7.3-fold) and WT (4.5-fold), indicating an immune imprinting shifting from WT to XBB antigenic side. Interpretation: Overall, I-I-I can provide protection against BA.5 infection and elicit rapid immune response upon BA.5 infection. Furthermore, BA.5 breakthrough infection effectively protects against XBB.1.9.1 lasting more than 5 months, and XBB.1.9.1 reinfection results in immune imprinting shifting from WT antigen induced by previous vaccination to the new XBB.1.9.1 antigen. These findings strongly suggest that future vaccines should target variant strain antigens, replacing prototype strain antigens. ABSTRACTAs a special class of stable atomic clusters, the superatom has become an exciting research topic in recent decades. They can mimic the chemistry and physics of individual atoms in the periodic table and find potential applications in a variety of fields. Traditional strategies for superatom design, however, have their own limitations. Herein, we review recent progress in the discovery of novel methodologies for superatom design, namely external-field regulated strategies (EFRS). We begin with a description of the basic concept of the superatom and the conventional electron-counting rules for superatom design, followed by a discussion of recent exploration about external-field regulated superatoms, where the oriented external electric field (OEEF), the ligand field, and the solvent field are presented. In the concluding section, we discuss the benefits and challenges of the EFRS together with some future research topics.

Abstract Background Anti-PD-1 antibodies have been approved for treating several cancer. However, data regarding the safety and efficacy of these agents in HIV-infected patients with cancer is lacking, because these patients are frequently omitted from clinical trials. Objectives The primary aim of our research is to assess the safety, activity, and long-term outcomes of PD-1 inhibitors in the treatment of HIV-infected patients with advanced cancer. Method We retrospectively analyzed data from HIV-infected patients with advanced cancers who were treated with PD-1 inhibitors at Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, Shanghai, China. Results Fifteen HIV-infected patients (all are men; asian; median age, 44) with cancer who were treated with chemotherapy and/or combined the other oncology treatments [along with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART)] prior to Sintilimab (12 out of 15) or Nivolumab (1 out of 11) or Camrelizumab (2 out of 11) injection were identified. Eight patients responded to treatment (disease control rate 53.3%), with 1 got partial response (PR) and 7 were stable. Most treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were grade 1 or 2 including anemia, leukopenia, hyperglycemia, granulocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Eight patients (53.3%) experienced treatment-related AEs (TRAEs) with grades 3/4including myelosuppression, infection, and neurological disorders. CD4+ T cell count and plasma HIV RNA remained stable throughout the treatment. Conclusions When used in HIV-infected patients with advanced malignancies, PD-1 inhibitors tend to have favorable efficacy, manageable side effects, and no deteriorated impacts on plasma HIV-RNA and CD4+ T cell count.

Abstract Aim To develop a set of evidence‐informed strategies to assist older people to improve swallowing functions and prevent further damage from complications. Design A two‐round Delphi survey. Methods An initial set of dysphagia care strategies with 74 relevant items for older people was formed based on a literature review by seven researchers. An online survey was conducted by 21 panellists, and data of experts' opinions were collected and analysed by improved Delphi method. Results The positive coefficients in the two rounds of expert consultation were 85.71% and 83.33%, respectively. Consensus was reached with 53 items included and was allocated into the following five sections: (1) screening, (2) assessment, (3) training, (4) interventions and (5) management. These strategies were named with the acronym of each section—“SATIA”. The management strategy can be applied to guide the management of older people with dysphagia.

Abstract Objective To investigate the ultrasonographic classification of fetal umbilical-portal-systemic venous shunts (UPSVS) and the correlations with fetal chromosomal abnormalities. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the ultrasound characteristics and the corresponding chromosomal abnormalities of 26 cases of fetal UPSVS prenatally diagnosed. Results A total of 26 fetuses diagnosed as UPSVS were included, including four cases of type I UPSVS, ten of type II, three of type IIIA, and nine of type IIIB. Four cases of type I were all complicated by fetal heart enlargement and heart insufficiency, of which one case had multiple malformations, and all four cases terminated pregnancies. Six of ten cases of type II terminated pregnancies, including four of Down’s syndrome, one of twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence, one of fetal edema but with normal copy number variation (CNV) by chorionic villus sampling. The other four of ten cases were isolated type II with normal chromosomes, which were delivered at full term and were normal in growth and development when followed up 34 months after birth. Three cases of type IIIA all terminated pregnancies, of which one had multiple malformations, one had right multicystic dysplastic kidney, and one had fetal heart enlargement and heart failure. Among nine of type IIIB, seven with chromosomal abnormalities and/ or complicated malformations terminated pregnancies, and two with isolated type IIIB and normal chromosomes were delivered at full term, and were normal in growth and development (one was followed up to 33 months after birth and the other 20 months after birth). Conclusion Fetal UPSVS can be clearly diagnosed and typed by prenatal ultrasonography. Fetal prognosis is determined by the types of UPSVS and complicated malformations and/ or chromosomal abnormalities. The probability of fetal chromosomal abnormalities in UPSVS fetuses is related to the ultrasonographic classification.

The phenomenon of prey switching is prevalent in the natural world and represents a strategic adaptation of predators to their environment. Neoseiulus bicaudus, a native predatory mite found in Xinjiang, serves as a natural enemy to numerous small pests. The utilization of Tyrophagus putrescentiae as an alternative prey for the mass breeding of N. bicaudus is employed to fulfill the demands of enhanced breeding efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Following the introduction of mass breed N. bicaudus into the agricultural ecosystem, there was a switching in the prey of N. bicaudus from Ty. putrescentiae to Tetranychus turkestani. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of prey switching at various stages on N. bicaudus. This study employed the age-stage, two-sex life table to assess the life parameters of N. bicaudus undergoing prey switching at different stages. The results showed that the survival rate of N. bicaudus was significantly decreased, the developmental period was significantly prolonged, the fecundity was improved during prey switching, and the intrinsic rate of increase of N. bicaudus was significantly decreased. The negative effects of prey switching in larva and deutonymph stages were greater than those in protonymph and adult stages. The stage and age of N. bicaudus undergoing prey switching were positively correlated with the male ratio, and negatively correlated with the total preoviposition period and the mean generation time. The comprehension of prey switching effects on N. bicaudus can enhance our understanding of the predator adaptation to environmental changes and contribute to the artificial rearing and application of natural enemy.

Although the rapid expansion of urban rail transit offers convenience to citizens, the issue of subway vibration cannot be overlooked. This study investigates the spatial distribution characteristics of vibration in the Fayuan Temple historic and cultural reserve. It involves using a V001 magnetoelectric acceleration sensor capable of monitoring low amplitudes with a sensitivity of 0.298 V/(m/s2), a measuring range of up to 20 m/s2, and a frequency range span from 0.5 to 100 Hz for in situ testing, analyzing the law of vibration propagation in this area, evaluating the impact on buildings, and determining the vibration reduction scheme. The reserve is divided into three zones based on the vertical vibration level measured during the in situ test as follows: severely excessive, generally excessive, and non-excessive vibration. Furthermore, the research develops a dynamic coupling model of vehicle–track–tunnel–stratum–structure to verify the damping effect of the wire spring floating plate track and periodic pile row. It compares the characteristics of three vibration reduction schemes, namely, internal vibration reduction reconstruction, periodic pile row, and anti-vibration reinforcement or reconstruction of buildings, proposing a comprehensive solution. Considering the construction conditions, difficulty, cost, and other factors, a periodic pile row is recommended as the primary treatment measure. If necessary, anti-vibration reinforcement or reconstruction of buildings can serve as supplemental measures.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) reconstruction from contact photoplethysmogram (PPG) would be transformative for cardiac monitoring. We investigated the fundamental and practical feasibility of such reconstruction by first replicating pioneering work in the field, with the aim of assessing the methods and evaluation metrics used. We then expanded existing research by investigating different cycle segmentation methods and different evaluation scenarios to robustly verify both fundamental feasibility, as well as practical potential. We found that reconstruction using the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and a linear ridge regression model shows good results when PPG and ECG cycles are semantically aligned—the ECG R peak and PPG systolic peak are aligned—before training the model. Such reconstruction can be useful from a morphological perspective, but loses important physiological information (precise R peak location) due to cycle alignment. We also found better performance when personalization was used in training, while a general model in a leave-one-subject-out evaluation performed poorly, showing that a general mapping between PPG and ECG is difficult to derive. While such reconstruction is valuable, as the ECG contains more fine-grained information about the cardiac activity as well as offers a different modality (electrical signal) compared to the PPG (optical signal), our findings show that the usefulness of such reconstruction depends on the application, with a trade-off between morphological quality of QRS complexes and precise temporal placement of the R peak. Finally, we highlight future directions that may resolve existing problems and allow for reliable and robust cross-modal physiological monitoring using just PPG.

Ultra-high-performance geopolymer concrete (UHPGC) emerges as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to Portland cement-based UHPC, offering similar mechanical properties while significantly reducing carbon footprint and energy consumption. Research on UHPGC components is extremely scarce. This study focuses on the flexural and crack behavior of UHPGC beams with different steel fiber contents and longitudinal reinforcement ratios. Five UHPGC beams were tested under four-point bending. The test results were evaluated in terms of the failure mode, load–deflection relationship, flexural capacity, ductility, average crack spacing, and short-term flexural stiffness. The results show that all the UHPGC beams failed due to crack localization. Increases in the reinforcement ratio and steel fiber content had favorable effects on the flexural capacity and flexural stiffness. When the reinforcement ratio increased from 1.18% to 2.32%, the flexural capacity and flexural stiffness increased by 60.5% and 12.3%, respectively. As the steel fiber content increased from 1.5% to 2.5%, the flexural capacity and flexural stiffness increased by 4.7% and 4.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the flexural capacity, flexural stiffness, and crack spacing of the UHPGC beams were evaluated using existing methods. The results indicate that the existing methods can effectively predict flexural capacity and flexural stiffness in UHPGC beams but overestimate crack spacing. This study will provide a reference for the structural design of UHPGC.

Neoseiulus bicaudus is a predatory mite species that could potentially be used for the biological control of spider mites and thrips. Floral resources can provide excellent habitats and abundant nutrients for natural enemies. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of eight floral resources on the longevity, fecundity, and predation ability of N. bicaudus. Among the considered plants, Cnidium monnieri led to the highest longevity (24 days) and fecundity (13.8 eggs) of N. bicaudus, while Tagetes erecta resulted in the lowest longevity (7 days) and fecundity (0.1 eggs) observed in the predatory mites. By comparing the effects of three nectar and pollen plants on the predation of predatory mites, it was observed that N. bicaudus still exhibited a type II functional response to Tetranychus turkestani. In the presence of pollen, the predation efficacy (a/Th) of N. bicaudus exhibited a lower value, compared to that in the absence of pollen (Control: a/Th = 24.00). When pollen was supplied, the maximum consumption (1/Th) of predatory mites was higher than in its absence (Control: 1/Th = 9.90 d−1), with the highest value obtained in the presence of B. officinalis pollen (B. officinalis: 1/Th = 17.86 d−1). The influence coefficient of predation of N. bicaudus on T. turkestani in the presence of pollen was compared in the presence of three nectar and pollen plants: Cnidium monnieri, Centaurea cyanus, and Borago officinalis. At low prey densities, the influence coefficient of C. cyanus exceeded that of B. officinalis, and the overall influence coefficient values were negative (i.e., the presence of pollen reduced predatory mite feeding on T. turkestani). They exhibited similar values at high prey densities, and all of the influence coefficient values were close to 0 (i.e., the presence of pollen had no effect on predatory mite feeding on T. turkestani). The findings revealed that diverse plant species exert differential impacts on N. bicaudus, with some influencing its lifespan and others affecting its reproductive capabilities. Furthermore, the presence of nectar and pollen plants had a significant impact on predatory mite feeding on T. turkestani at low prey densities; however, this effect diminished as the prey density increased. Therefore, we recommend planting C. monnieri, C. cyanus, and B. officinalis in the field to ensure an ample population of predatory mites. The obtained results hold significant implications for the utilization of nectar and pollen plants in eco-friendly pest management strategies within agricultural contexts.

The all-inorganic lead-free vacancy-ordered perovskite offers a promising avenue toward nontoxic and stable optoelectronic materials. Herein, we present a first-principles study of the structural stability, optical absorption, electronic structure, and mechanical behavior of Cs2BCl6 compounds with B-site substitutions (BGe, Sn, Pb, Cr, Mo, W, Ti, Zr, and Hf). The structural analysis shows that the Cs2BCl6 perovskite with face-centered cubes has a stable chemical environment, especially Cs2HfCl6, Cs2WCl6, and Cs2PbCl6. Hf4+ and W4+ with high-energy d-state external electron configurations can further lower the valence band maximum position of the Cs2BCl6 structures and thus increase the band gap, assisting in tuning the optical absorption and emission properties of these structures in the optoelectronic application. For the light absorption properties of Cs2BCl6 materials, the best light absorption properties have been concluded for Ti4+, Cr4+, and Pb4+-based perovskite in the visible range due to a suitable band gap. Therefore, the excellent optical absorption and electronic properties make these vacancy-ordered perovskites promising candidates for optoelectronic applications.

Melanomas reprogram their metabolism to rapidly adapt to therapy-induced stress conditions, allowing them to persist and ultimately develop resistance. We report that a subpopulation of melanoma cells tolerate MAPK pathway inhibitors (MAPKis) through a concerted metabolic reprogramming mediated by peroxisomes and UDP-glucose ceramide glycosyltransferase (UGCG). Compromising peroxisome biogenesis, by repressing PEX3 expression, potentiated the proapoptotic effects of MAPKis via an induction of ceramides, an effect limited by UGCG-mediated ceramide metabolism. Cotargeting PEX3 and UGCG selectively eliminated a subset of metabolically active, drug-tolerant CD36+ melanoma persister cells, thereby sensitizing melanoma to MAPKis and delaying resistance. Increased levels of peroxisomal genes and UGCG were found in patient-derived MAPKi-relapsed melanomas, and simultaneously inhibiting PEX3 and UGCG restored MAPKi sensitivity in multiple models of therapy resistance. Finally, combination therapy consisting of a newly identified inhibitor of the PEX3-PEX19 interaction, a UGCG inhibitor, and MAPKis demonstrated potent antitumor activity in preclinical melanoma models, thus representing a promising approach for melanoma treatment.

Abstract In this study, a digital calibration method applicable for a continuous‐time sigma‐delta analogue‐to‐digital converter is proposed using the AC injection technique. The proposed technique directly calibrates the integration accuracy of a converter instead of only trimming the capacitors. Compared with the existing calibration methods, the proposed method does not require complex timing logic processing or additional capacitors and does not adversely impact the dynamic performance of the converter. Furthermore, it ensures the accuracy of the converter, regardless of the non‐ideal effects of advanced processes.

Although biodiversity is a central component of food systems, conventional food systems have become one of the major drivers of biodiversity loss globally. There is an increasing need to transform food systems to provide sufficient and nutritious food, but with minimal negative impacts on the environment and society. One of the possible avenues to enable the sustainable transformation of food systems might be through the development of locally appropriate biodiversity-based solutions. In this paper we report the insights and lessons learned during the design and implementation of transdisciplinary projects that employed the concept of Sustainable Development Goals labs (SDG-Labs) to create biodiversity-based solutions to transform food systems. The six SDG-Labs outlined in this paper were implemented in Armenia, China, Japan, Madagascar, Thailand, and Uganda. Collectively they developed very diverse biodiversity-based solutions that used different components of biodiversity, ranging from novel cultivation systems with endangered plants, to gardens using tree species for wind breaks, or novel tea-forestry production systems. Beyond their ability to leverage different components of biodiversity to transform local food systems (also conserving biodiversity in the process), all solutions had multiple co-benefits such as climate change adaptation/mitigation and livelihoods generation, among other sustainability domains. Through a Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) analysis we synthesized the experiences gained during the design and implementation of all six SDG-Labs. The findings suggest the great promise of these transdisciplinary approaches for developing solutions at the biodiversity-food-climate nexus. However, this synthesis paper also points to the multiple context-specific challenges that should be overcomed to maximize the potential of SDG-Labs to both enable the sustainable transformation of (local) food systems and/or be scaled up effectively.
