Objective: Postoperative readmissions are considered an indicator of healthcare quality. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors associated with readmission following pulmonary resection for lung cancer. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, Web of science, the Cochrane Library, and databases of CNKI and Wanfang. We collected the factors associated with readmission following pulmonary resection from the included studies, and data analysis was conducted with STATA SE12.0 software. Results: A total of 11 studies (386 012 participants) were included. The meta-analysis results showed that age (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.093), male sex (odds ratio [OR] = 1.260), Charlson score (SMD = 1.408), forced expiratory volume in 1 second predicted (SMD = −0.203), congestive heart failure (OR = 1.708), peripheral vascular disease (OR = 1.436), and histology (OR = 0.804) were associated with readmission ( P

Background: Cancer patients often experience decreased quality of life during chemotherapy. This study aimed to determine the preliminary efficacy and safety of Reishi & Privet Formula (RPF) for maintaining quality of life among patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: We conducted a phase II randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in China. Adults with NSCLC scheduled to receive chemotherapy were randomly assigned (3:1 ratio) to receive oral RPF (3.36 g/day) or placebo daily for 6 weeks. The main outcome was the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–Lung (FACT-L). We evaluated RPF’s safety profile using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events and assessed changes in outcome measures from baseline to weeks 3 and 6 using a linear mixed effects model. Results: We enrolled 82 participants across 8 cancer centers in China. The median age was 59 years, 56 (68%) had advanced cancer. Compared with the placebo group, the RPF group had nonstatistically significant higher quality of life as measured by the FACT-L total score ( P = .086) over 2 cycles of chemotherapy. The RPF group was associated with a nonsignificant better general health ( P = .050) and emotional well-being ( P = .090) than the placebo group. Adverse events rates did not differ between groups. Conclusions: This study demonstrated preliminary safety and suggests a promising trend in RPF’s effect on maintaining quality of life and emotional well-being among NSCLC patients undergoing chemotherapy. Future adequately powered randomized-controlled trials are needed to verify the efficacy and safety of RPF in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Background and Objective: The association between smoking and clinical outcomes after coronary stenting is controversial. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the association between smoking and in stent restenosis (ISR), major adverse cardiac events (MACE), or major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) after coronary stenting., Methods: A search for studies published before December 2014 was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library. An inverse random weighted meta-analysis was conducted using logarithm of the odds ratio (OR) and its standard error for each study., Results: Ten studies investigated the association between smoking and ISR. Overall, smoking was not associated with ISR (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 0.79-1.41; I(2) = 47.8%). Subgroup analysis also failed to show a significant association between smoking and ISR risk regardless of bare metal stent (BMS) and drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation. Eight studies explored the association between smoking and MACE, but no association was found (OR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.77-1.10; I(2) = 25.5%), and subgroup analysis revealed that no distinct difference was found between BMS and DES implantation. Three studies investigated the association between smoking and MACCE and significant association was found (OR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.43-3.06; I(2) = 21.6%)., Conclusions: Our results suggest that in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with stent implantation, smoking is not associated with ISR and MACE; however, smoking is an independent risk factor for MACCE.
