Abstract Construction of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) of zinc (Zn) electrode is an effective strategy to stabilize Zn electrode/electrolyte interface. However, single-layer SEIs of Zn electrodes undergo rupture and consequent failure during repeated Zn plating/stripping. Here, we propose the construction of a robust bilayer SEI that simultaneously achieves homogeneous Zn2+ transport and durable mechanical stability for high Zn utilization rate (ZUR) and Coulombic efficiency (CE) of Zn electrode by adding 1,3-Dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone as a representative electrolyte additive. This bilayer SEI on Zn surface consists of a crystalline ZnCO3-rich outer layer and an amorphous ZnS-rich inner layer. The ordered outer layer improves the mechanical stability during cycling, and the amorphous inner layer homogenizes Zn2+ transport for homogeneous, dense Zn deposition. As a result, the bilayer SEI enables reversible Zn plating/stripping for 4800 cycles with an average CE of 99.95% (± 0.06%). Meanwhile, Zn | |Zn symmetric cells show durable lifetime for over 550 h with a high ZUR of 98% under an areal capacity of 28.4 mAh cm−2. Furthermore, the Zn full cells based on the bilayer SEI functionalized Zn negative electrodes coupled with different positive electrodes all exhibit stable cycling performance under high ZUR.

Ecosystem multifunctionality means that the ecosystem has the ability to provide multiple functions simultaneously. The study of the ecosystem multifunctionality provides an important basis for the understanding of the ecosystem function and management. Despite the plant community restoration is an important driver of changes in biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality, we still little know about the scaling effects the relationship between different dimensions of biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality. In this study, we investigated the relative contributions of different dimensions of plant diversity (e.g., species diversity, functional diversity and phylogenetic diversity) changes in ecosystem multifunctionality under different restoration stages (10, 30 and 40 years) in a human-damaged Liaodong oak (Quercus wutaishanica) plant communities in northern China. The results found that (1) ecosystem multifunctionality index was significantly higher in the middle (30 years) and late (40 years) stages of restoration than the early stage (10 years) of restoration. (2) Species richness and phylogenetic diversity were significantly higher in the early stage (10 years) of restoration than in the middle (30 years) and late (40 years) stages of restoration, however, functional dispersion was significantly higher in the later stages (40 years) of restoration than in the early (10 years) and middle stages (30 years) of restoration. (3) Ecosystem multifunctionality is primarily driven by photosynthetic traits of dominant species. The results of this study deepen the under-standing of the relationship between plant diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in the forests of northern China by considering natural restoration after destruction, and contribute to the conservation of plant diversity and maintenance of ecosystem multifunctionality.

Abstract Immune evasion is one of the critical hallmarks of malignant tumors, especially non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Emerging findings have illustrated the roles of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) on NSCLC immune evasion. Here, this study investigated the function and underlying mechanism of m6A reader YTH domain family protein 3 (YTHDF3) on NSCLC immune evasion. YTHDF3 was found to be highly expressed in NSCLC tissue and act as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival. Functionally, up-regulation of YTHDF3 impaired the CD8+ T antitumor activity to deteriorate NSCLC immune evasion, while YTHDF3 silencing recovered the CD8+ T antitumor activity to inhibit immune evasion. Besides, YTHDF3 up-regulation reduced the apoptosis of NSCLC cells. Mechanistically, PD-L1 acted as the downstream target for YTHDF3, and YTHDF3 could upregulate the transcription stability of PD-L1 mRNA. Overall, YTHDF3 targeted PD-L1 to promote NSCLC immune evasion partially through escaping effector cell cytotoxicity CD8+ T mediated killing and antitumor immunity. In summary, this study provides an essential insight for m6A modification on CD8+ T cell-mediated antitumor immunity in NSCLC, which might inspire an innovation for lung cancer tumor immunotherapy.

The floating platform is a critical component of the floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), and its internal structure design plays a key role in ensuring the safe operation of the FOWT. In this study, the local model of the floating platform was firstly parameterized, and a response surface model was obtained by conducting an orthogonal test. The response surface model was then optimized using a gradient descent algorithm. Finally, the internal structure arrangement was validated through a safety calibration. The optimization results indicate that the maximum stress of the optimized model is reduced by 22.12% compared to the original model, while maintaining the same mass, centroid, and other mass-related parameters. The optimization significantly improves the safety of the structure and provides valuable references for the design and construction of a FOWT platform.

Mountain apricot (Prunus sibirica) is an important fruit tree variety, and has a wide range of planting and application value in China and even the world. However, the current research on the suitable distribution area of P. sibirica is still inconclusive. In this study, we retrieved distribution data for P. sibirica in China from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), and identified six key environmental factors influencing its distribution through cluster analysis. Using these six selected climate factors and P. sibirica distribution points in China, we applied the maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) to evaluate 1160 candidate models for parameter optimization. The final results predict the potential distribution of P. sibirica under the current climate as well as two future climate scenarios (SSPs126 and SSPs585). This study shows that the model optimized with six key climate factors (AUC = 0.897, TSS = 0.658) outperforms the full model using nineteen climate factors (AUC = 0.894, TSS = 0.592). Under the high-emission scenario (SSPs585), the highly suitable habitat for P. sibirica is expected to gradually shrink towards the southeast and northwest, while expanding in the northeast and southwest. After the 2050s, highly suitable habitats are projected to completely disappear in Shandong, while new suitable areas may emerge in Tibet. Additionally, the total area of suitable habitat is projected to increase in the future, with a more significant expansion under the high-emission scenario (SSPs585) compared to the low-emission scenario (SSPs126) (7.33% vs. 0.16%). Seasonal changes in precipitation are identified as the most influential factor in driving the distribution of P. sibirica.

Seed dispersal is an important ecological process and has important implications for plant population expansion and regeneration. Seed dispersal not only reduces the probability of death due to seed density but also facilitates seedling establishment. Many studies have focused on the effect of one or two factors on seed dispersal. However, little is known about studies on the effect of multiple factors and their interactions on seed dispersal. Here, we conducted a field experiment to explore how seed size, soil burial, and seed peeling affect the dispersal and hoarding of seeds of Quercus liaotungensis in dispersal animals. We found that large seeds were preferentially selected by animals, and the predation after dispersal, hoarding after dispersal, predation distance after dispersal, and hoarding distance after dispersal of large seeds were significantly greater than small seeds, which is more beneficial to the plant expansion and regeneration. Soil burial increased the time of seed intact in situ, significantly increased predation in situ, and reduced predation after dispersal, predation distance after dispersal, and hoarding distance after dispersal, which is not beneficial to the plant population expansion and regeneration. Seed peeling reduced the time of seed intact in situ, and the predation after dispersal was significantly greater than that of unpeeled seeds, which is not beneficial to the plant population. We did not find the interactions between seed size, soil burial, and seed peeling on dispersal. The effects of a single factor may be more than their interactions between seed size, soil burial and seed peeling on dispersal. These results implied that seed size, soil burial and seed peeling may affect plant population expansion and regeneration by affecting the dispersal and hoarding of animals.

Abstract Background Epidemiological studies have revealed multiple risk factors for metabolic syndrome. However, there are no consistent findings on the association between famine exposure, age at menarche, and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. This cross-sectional study aimed to reveal the individual and combined effects of famine exposure and age at menarche on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among elderly women. Methods Four thousand seven hundred seventy participants between 60 and 93 years of age were selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Statistical differences between the baseline characteristics of famine exposure, age at menarche, and metabolic syndrome were evaluated using the t-test, F-test, and Chi-square test. Three multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to test the association between famine exposure, age of menarche, and the odds ratio of metabolic syndrome. Results Two thousand one hundred ninety-eight (46.08%) participants had metabolic syndrome, while 2572 (53.92%) participants did not. Furthermore, 3068 (64.32%) women reported onset of menarche under 15 years of age, while 1702 (35.68%) women reported onset of menarche above 16 years of age. Regarding the separate association of famine exposure and age of menarche with metabolic syndrome, in model three, the adolescence/adulthood famine exposure group vs. no famine exposure group odds ratio was 2.45 (95% CI 2.02, 2.97), and the older than 16 years vs. younger than 15 years group odds ratio was 1.23 (95% CI 1.09, 1.39), which was the highest odds ratio among the three models. Regarding the combined association of famine exposure and age of menarche with metabolic syndrome, in model three, among the age of menarche ≤ 15 years group, the adolescence/adulthood famine exposure vs. no famine exposure group odds ratio was 2.45 (95% CI: 1.91, 3.14); among the menarche age ≥ 16 years group, the adolescence/adulthood famine exposure stages vs. exposed group odds ratio was 3.27 (95% CI: 2.44, 4.38), which was the highest odds ratio among the three models. Conclusion These findings suggested that famine exposure and age at menarche, either separately or in combination, were positively associated with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among older women.

Moisture is the most important environmental factor limiting seed regeneration of shrubs in desert areas. Therefore, understanding the effects of moisture changes on seed germination, morphological and physiological traits of shrubs is essential for vegetation restoration in desert areas. In March to June 2023, in a greenhouse using the potting method, we tested the effects of soil moisture changes (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%) on seed germination and seedling growth of six desert shrubs (Zygophyllum xanthoxylum, Nitraria sibirica, Calligonum mongolicum, Corethrodendron scoparium, Caragana korshinskii, and Corethrodendron fruticosu). Results showed that (1) seed germination percent and vigor index were significantly higher at 15 and 20% soil moisture content than at 5 and 10%; (2) shoot length, primary root length, specific leaf area and biomass of seedlings were significantly higher in the 15% and 20% soil moisture content treatments than in the 5% and 10% treatments; (3) superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and soluble protein content (SP) decreased with decreasing soil water content, while peroxidase activity (POD) and catalase activity (CAT) showed a decreasing and then increasing trend with increasing soil water content; (4) the six seeds and seedling of shrubs were ranked in order of their survivability in response to changes in soil moisture: Caragana korshinskii > Zygophyllum xanthoxylum > Calligonum mongolicum > Corethrodendron scoparium > Corethrodendron fruticosu > Nitraria sibirica. Our study shows that shrub seedlings respond to water changes by regulating morphological and physiological traits together. More importantly, we found that C. korshinskii, Z. xanthoxylum and C. mongolicum were more survivable when coping with water deficit or extreme precipitation. The results of the study may provide a reference for the selection and cultivation of similar shrubs in desert areas under frequent extreme droughts in the future.

With the advancement in global market integration, manufacturing enterprises face increasingly fierce competition, making the development of intelligent manufacturing systems a key factor in enhancing market competitiveness. However, manufacturing systems are characterized by varying characteristics of manufacturing resources and strong interdependencies, which make production control more complex. A bottleneck refers to the issue where the manufacturing system’s actual production capacity is less than or equal to the demand placed on a resource. After extensive research, scholars have concluded that the definition, identification methods, and related studies on bottlenecks are not fixed but depend on the specific research subject and the type of bottleneck. Therefore, scholars suggest that only by accurately defining the bottlenecks within a system can appropriate models be employed for prediction, thereby avoiding issues such as inefficient resource allocation and delivery delays, or implementing measures to minimize these negative impacts. Particularly under unstable production conditions, dynamic bottlenecks are likely to occur, making the prediction and identification of bottlenecks under dynamic environmental conditions crucial. Currently, there is still a lack of research in real-time state sensing and integration, as well as a lack of systematic review of related research. To fill this research gap, this review comprehensively introduces the current state and achievements in bottleneck research within manufacturing systems, focusing on bottleneck categories, identification, shifting, and management. It also provides an outlook on future research trends and directions in the study of manufacturing system bottlenecks.

IntroductionCirculating cytokines were considered to play a critical role in the initiation and propagation of sarcopenia and frailty from observational studies. This study aimed to find the casual association between circulating cytokines and sarcopenia and frailty from a genetic perspective by two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.MethodsData for 41 circulating cytokines were extracted from the genome-wide association study dataset of 8,293 European participants. Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, MR-Egger, and weighted median method were applied to assess the relationship of circulating cytokines with the risk of aging-related syndromes and frailty. Furthermore, MR-Egger regression was used to indicate the directional pleiotropy, and Cochran’s Q test was used to verify the potential heterogeneity. The “leave-one-out” method was applied to visualize whether there was a causal relationship affected by only one anomalous single-nucleotide polymorphisms.ResultsGenetic predisposition to increasing levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10), IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was associated with the higher risk of low hand grip strength according to the IVW method [R = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.01–1.10, P = 0.028, false discovery rate (FDR)–adjusted P = 1.000; OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.00–1.07, P = 0.042, FDR-adjusted P = 0.784; OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.00–1.05, P = 0.038, FDR-adjusted P = 0.567]. Furthermore, genetically determined higher macrophage colony-stimulating factors (M-CSFs) were associated with a lower presence of appendicular lean mass (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00–1.02, P = 0.003, FDR-adjusted P = 0.103). Monokine induced by interferon-γ (MIG) and tumor necrosis factor–beta (TNF-β) were associated with a higher risk of frailty (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01–1.05, P < 0.0001, FDR-adjusted P = 0.012; OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00–1.03, P = 0.013, FDR-adjusted P = 0.259). In this study, we did not find heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy between the circulating cytokines and the risk of frailty and sarcopenia.ConclusionGenetic predisposition to assess IL-10, IL-12, and VEGF levels was associated with a higher risk of low hand grip strength and M-CSF with the presence of appendicular lean mass. The high levels of TNF-β and MIG were associated with a higher risk of frailty. More studies will be required to explore the molecular biological mechanisms underlying the action of inflammatory factors.

Abstract Background Sarcopenia refers to the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and muscle function, which seriously threatens the quality of life of the older adults. Therefore, early diagnosis is urgently needed. This study aimed to explore the changes of serum protein profiles in sarcopenia patients through a cross-sectional study, and to provide the reference for clinical diagnosis. Methods This study was a cross-sectional study carried out in the Tianjin institute of physical education teaching experiment training center from December 2019 to December 2020. Ten older adults were recruited, including 5 sarcopenia and 5 healthy older adults. After a detailed diagnostic evaluation, blood samples were collected to prepare serum for proteomic analysis using the HPLC System Easy nLC method. The differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were screened by the limma package of R software (version 4.1.0). Results A total of 114 DEPs were identified between the patients and healthy older adults, including 48 up-regulated proteins and 66 down-regulated proteins. The functional enrichment analysis showed that the 114 DEPs were significantly enriched in 153 GO terms, which mainly involved in low-density lipoprotein particle remodeling, and negative regulation of immune response,etc. The PPI network further suggested that the cholesteryl ester transfer protein and Apolipoprotein A2 could serve as biomarkers to facilitate diagnosis of sarcopenia. Conclusions This study provided a serum proteomic profile of sarcopenia patients, and identified two proteins with diagnostic value, which might help to improve the diagnostic accuracy of sarcopenia.

ObjectiveTo explore the correlation between baseline serum uric acid (SUA) and SUA changes with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among middle-aged and older individuals.MethodBinary logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the effects of baseline and changes in SUA on the incidence of T2DM. Stratified analysis was conducted based on sex, and the SUA levels were classified into four quartiles to assess the effect of baseline and relative changes in SUA on the incidence of T2DM. Furthermore, interaction analysis was performed between body mass index (BMI) and SUA, age and SUA, and sex and SUA.ResultsIn the cohort study, the highest quartiles of SUA were significantly correlated with an increased incidence of T2DM among females in model 1 [OR = 2.231 (1.631, 3.050)], model 2 [OR = 2.090 (1.523, 2.867)], model 3 [OR = 2.075 (1.511, 2.849)], and model 4 [OR = 1.707 (1.234, 2.362)]. The highest quartiles of SUA had a statistically significant effect on the incidence of T2DM among all participants in model 1 [OR = 1.601 (1.277, 2.008)], model 2 [OR = 1.519 (1.204, 1.915)], model 3 [OR = 1.597 (1.257, 2.027)], and model 4 [OR = 1.380 (1.083, 1.760)]. Regarding the relative change of SUA, the highest quantiles of SUA were significantly correlated with an increased incidence of T2DM among females in model 1 [OR = 1.409 (1.050, 1.890)], model 2 [OR = 1.433 (1.067, 1.926)], and model 3 [OR = 1.420 (1.056, 1.910)], and there was a statistically significant correlation with incident T2DM among all participants in model 4 [OR = 1.346 (1.079, 1.680)] after adjusting for all covariates. However, there was no significant correlation between baseline, relative, and absolute changes in SUA and the incidence of T2DM among males. The interaction analysis demonstrated that sex, BMI, and the relative changes in SUA had a combined effect on the incidence of T2DM, while age and the changes in SUA had a joint effect on the incidence of T2DM only in females.ConclusionThere was a positive association between SUA and the incidence of T2DM for all participants. However, significant sex differences in incidence were observed only in women, not men.

Abstract Purpose To describe the prevalence and analyse the associated factors of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia among community-dwelling old adults in China, in order to provide effective strategies for early prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Methods This cross-sectional study evaluated community-dwelling old adults aged over 60 years. The basic information, morphological indices, body composition, physical activities were collected and assessed. Possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia were diagnosed by the criteria of Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) in 2019. A multivariate logistic regression model with stepwise method was employed to identify factors associated with possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia. Results In total 729 old adults from Tianjin were included in this study. Eighty-one participants were diagnosed with possible sarcopenia (prevalence of 11.11%). Seventy-five participants were diagnosed with sarcopenia (prevalence of 10.29%). Age (odds ratio (OR):1.047, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.055–1.090) and lower physical activities (low level OR:4.171, 95% CI:1.790–9.720; medium level OR:2.634, 95% CI:1.352–5.132) were significantly associated with possible sarcopenia. Age (OR:1.187, 95% CI:1.124–1.253), higher body fat percentage (OR:1.225, 95% CI:1.140–1.317), lower BMI (OR:0.424, 95% CI:0.346–0.519), lower mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores (OR:0.865,95% CI:0.781–0.958) and low physical activities (OR:4.638, 95% CI:1.683–12.782) were significantly associated with sarcopenia. Conclusion Possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia are prevalent among community-dwelling old adults in China. Ageing and lower physical activities were both associated with possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia. Old adults with sarcopenia more likely have higher body fat percentage, lower BMI and lower cognitive function compared with those without this condition.

The wide application of the evapotranspiration (ET) products has deepened our understanding of the water, energy and carbon cycles, driving increased interest in regional and global assessments of their performance. However, evaluating ET products at a global scale with varying levels of dryness and vegetation greenness poses challenges due to a relative lack of reference data and potential water imbalance. Here, we evaluated the performance of eight state-of-the-art ET products derived from remote sensing, Land Surface Models, and machine learning methods. Specifically, we assessed their ability to capture ET magnitude, variability, and trend, using 1,381 global watershed water balance ET as a baseline. Furthermore, we created aridity and vegetation categories to investigate performance differences among products under varying environmental conditions. Our results demonstrate that the spatial and temporal performances of the ET products were strongly affected by aridity and vegetation greenness. The poorer performances, such as underestimation of interannual variability and misjudged trend, tend to occur in abundant humidity and vegetation. Our findings emphasize the significance of considering aridity and vegetation greenness into ET product generation, especially in the context of ongoing global warming and greening. Which hopefully will contribute to the directional optimizations and effective applications of ET simulations.

The hybrid droop and master-slave structure studied in existing work complements the advantages of droop control and master-slave control, at the cost of frequency and voltage deviations in microgrids. To eliminate these deviations and maintain accurate power sharing among distributed generators, this paper proposes a decentralized secondary control method based on mode switching, where the secondary controller switches among three modes. In the first mode, a feedback strategy is applied to maintain accurate power sharing among slave distributed generators, and then the load demand is estimated and redistributed among distributed generators to calculate new secondary control commands in the second mode, which are further updated in the third mode to eliminate frequency and point-of-common-coupling bus voltage deviations. The proposed method is communication-free and is able to eliminate the influence of triggering delay among slave distributed generators during the mode switching. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through hardware experiments.

Transcatheter left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is non-inferior to vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in preventing thromboembolic events in atrial fibrillation (AF). Non-vitamin K antagonists (NOACs) have an improved safety profile over VKAs; however, evidence regarding their effect on cardiovascular and neurological outcomes relative to LAAO is limited. Up-to-date randomized trials or propensity-score-matched data comparing LAAO vs. NOACs in high-risk patients with AF were pooled in our study. A total of 2849 AF patients (LAAO: 1368, NOACs: 1481, mean age: 75 ± 7.5 yrs, 63.5% male) were enrolled. The mean CHA2DS2-VASc score was 4.3 ± 1.7, and the mean HAS-BLED score was 3.4 ± 1.2. The baseline characteristics were comparable between the two groups. In the LAAO group, the success rate of device implantation was 98.8%. During a mean follow-up of 2 years, as compared with NOACs, LAAO was associated with a significant reduction of ISTH major bleeding (p = 0.0002). There were no significant differences in terms of ischemic stroke (p = 0.61), ischemic stroke/thromboembolism (p = 0.63), ISTH major and clinically relevant minor bleeding (p = 0.73), cardiovascular death (p = 0.63), and all-cause mortality (p = 0.71). There was a trend toward reduction of combined major cardiovascular and neurological endpoints in the LAAO group (OR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.64–1.11, p = 0.12). In conclusion, for high-risk AF patients, LAAO is associated with a significant reduction of ISTH major bleeding without increased ischemic events, as compared to “contemporary NOACs”. The present data show the superior role of LAAO over NOACs among high-risk AF patients in terms of reduction of major bleeding; however, more randomized controlled trials are warranted.

Assessing satellite-based precipitation product capacity for detecting precipitation and linear trends is fundamental for accurately knowing precipitation characteristics and changes, especially for regions with scarce and even no observations. In this study, we used daily gauge observations across the Huai River Basin (HRB) during 1983–2012 and four validation metrics to evaluate the Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR) capacity for detecting extreme precipitation and linear trends. The PERSIANN-CDR well captured climatologic characteristics of the precipitation amount- (PRCPTOT, R85p, R95p, and R99p), duration- (CDD and CWD), and frequency-based indices (R10mm, R20mm, and Rnnmm), followed by moderate performance for the intensity-based indices (Rx1day, R5xday, and SDII). Based on different validation metrics, the PERSIANN-CDR capacity to detect extreme precipitation varied spatially, and meanwhile the validation metric-based performance differed among these indices. Furthermore, evaluation of the PERSIANN-CDR linear trends indicated that this product had a much limited and even no capacity to represent extreme precipitation changes across the HRB. Briefly, this study provides a significant reference for PERSIANN-CDR developers to use to improve product accuracy from the perspective of extreme precipitation, and for potential users in the HRB.

A full analysis of 3-month Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration index (SPEI-3) changes and attribution analyses are of significance for deeply understanding dryness/wetness evolutions and thus formulating specific measures to sustain regional development. In this study, we analyze monthly and annual SPEI-3 changes over Southwest China (SWC; including Sichuan (SC), Chongqing (CQ), Guizhou (GZ), Yunnan (YN), and west Guangxi (wGX)) during 1961–2012, using the SPEI model and routine meteorological measurements at 269 weather sites. For SWC and each subregion (excluding wGX), annual SPEI-3 during 1961–2012 tends to decrease, and drying is at most of months in January and September–December, but wetting is in February–August (excluding March for wGX). Additionally, more than 50% of sites show declined and increased SPEI-3 in January, April, June, and August–December and the remaining months, respectively. Except for wGX with dominant of ET0, annual SPEI-3 changes in SWC and other four subregions have dominant of precipitation. Spatially, annual SPEI-3 changes at 59% of sites are because of precipitation, generally located in southeast SC, south YN, CQ, GZ, and south and northeast wGX. Nevertheless, dominants at regional and site scales vary among months, e.g., SWC, SC, CQ, and GZ, having dominant of precipitation (ET0) during September–December (most of months during January–August), YN always with dominant of precipitation, and wGX with dominant of precipitation (ET0) in February–April and July–December (January, May, and June). Importantly, this study provides a reference for quantitatively evaluating spatiotemporal dryness/wetness variations with climate change, especially for regions with significant drying/wetting.

Malaria importation and local vector susceptibility to imported Plasmodium vivax infection are a continuing risk along the China–Myanmar border. Malaria transmission has been prevented in 3 border villages in Tengchong County, Yunnan Province, China, by use of active fever surveillance, integrated vector control measures, and intensified surveillance and response.

Abstract Background Rapid diagnostic test (RDT) is becoming an alternative way of establishing quickly the diagnosis of malaria infections, by detecting specific malaria antigens in suspected patients’ blood between the China-Myanmar endemic borders areas, towards achieving the National Malaria Elimination programme by 2020. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of CareStart™ Malaria Pf/Pan RDT kit for the diagnosis of malaria infections in suspected patients. Blood examination by microscopy was taken as gold standard to evaluate CareStart™ kit’s sensitivity, specificity and predictive value and corrected with PCR assay. Results Overall 126 of 241 (52.28%) malaria cases were detected by microscopy compared to 115 of 241(47.72%) CareStart™ kit and 128 of 241 (53.11%) PCR corrected assay. CareStart™ kit’s sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of malaria were 89.68% and 98.26% respectively, compared to standard microscopy, whereas the sensitivity and specificity for falciparum malaria were 88.52% and 98.26%, and for vivax malaria: 90.77% and 100%. The CareStart™ positive predictive values were 98.26% (93.88-99.52%, 95% CI) compared to 100% (96.77-100%, 95% CI) for PCR-corrected, and the negative predictive values of 89.68% (83.15-93.87%, 95% CI) were the same in microscopy as PCR-corrected. The diagnostic accuracy of CareStart™ kit versus microscopy and PCR were 93.78% (89.99-96.19%, 95% CI) and 94.61% (90.99-96.82%, 95% CI) respectively. The likelihood of diagnostic of malaria positive was almost similar between microscopy and CareStart™ kit, with an entropy reduction of 60.0% compared to a weak likelihood of misdiagnosis of 0.10 (0.09-0.12, 95% CI), with an entropy reduction of 36.01%. Conclusion The accuracy of CareStart™ kit is comparable to gold standard microscopy in these areas, it is easy to perform and suitable for cross-border diagnosis and monitoring of local or imported malaria patterns by any local health staff in endemic remotes.

Developing epoxy structural adhesives with excellent high‐temperature adhesion remains a great challenge. The incorporation of fillers can enhance the performance of epoxy adhesives, albeit at the expense of reduced high‐temperature adhesion properties. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) is considered a promising filler for enhancing high‐temperature adhesion properties due to its excellent compatibility and nano cage‐structured. Herein, the rigid cage‐structured was covalently introduced epoxy adhesives to improve the high‐temperature adhesion properties. The introduction of 1 wt% POSS significantly increased the high‐temperature (120°C) adhesion strength by 197% and toughness by 283%. The POSS‐reinforced adhesive also featured excellent wide temperature adaptability, indicating that it maintained high adhesion strength at various temperatures. Furthermore, POSS drastically enhanced the transparency of epoxy adhesive by three times. It is highly anticipated that this work will open a new avenue of designing epoxy adhesives with the excellent high‐temperature adhesion properties and transparency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
