This is an article in the field of mining engineering. Magnesite in China is rich and good in quality. Its mineral quantity and grade rank the first in the world. It is widely used as the raw material for the production of magnesium oxide in industry. The change of microstructure of magnesite during calcination is the key to performance the properties of magnesia products. Taking this as the starting point, the technical progress of preparing high-performance magnesia products from magnesite is summarized firstly. Then, according to the restrictive factors of industry development, this article analyzes the future development trend of this field briefly.

Abstract Background Lung cancer, a major global health concern, disproportionately impacts low socioeconomic status (SES) patients, who face suboptimal care and reduced survival. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic performance of traditional Cox proportional hazards (CoxPH) regression and machine learning models, specifically Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), in patients with advanced lung cancer with low SES. Design A retrospective study. Method The 949 patients with advanced lung cancer with low SES who entered the hospice ward of a tertiary hospital in Wuhan, China, from January 2012 to December 2021 were randomized into training and testing groups in a 3:1 ratio. CoxPH regression methods and four machine learning algorithms (DT, RF, SVM, and XGBoost) were used to construct prognostic risk prediction models. Results The CoxPH regression-based nomogram demonstrated reliable predictive accuracy for survival at 60, 90, and 120 days. Among the machine learning models, XGBoost showed the best performance, whereas RF had the lowest accuracy at 60 days, DT at 90 days, and SVM at 120 days. Key predictors across all models included Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score, quality of life (QOL) score, and cough symptoms. Conclusions CoxPH, DT, RF, SVM, and XGBoost models are effective in predicting mortality risk over 60–120 days in patients with advanced lung cancer with low SES. Monitoring KPS, QOL, and cough symptoms is crucial for identifying high-risk patients who may require intensified care. Clinicians should select models tailored to individual patient needs and preferences due to varying prediction accuracies. Abstract Flexible power supply devices provide possibilities for wearable electronics in the Internet of Things. However, unsatisfying capacity or lifetime of typical batteries or capacitors seriously limit their practical applications. Different from conventional heat-to-electricity generators, zinc ion thermal charging cells has been a competitive candidate for the self-power supply solution, but the lack of promising cathode materials has restricted the achievement of promising performances. Herein, we propose an attractive cathode material by rational heterostructure engineering of hydrated vanadium pentoxide. Owing to the integration of thermodiffusion and thermoextraction effects, the thermopower is significantly improved from 7.8 ± 2.6 mV K−1 to 23.4 ± 1.5 mV K−1. Moreover, an impressive normalized power density of 1.9 mW m−2 K−2 is achieved in the quasi-solid-state cells. In addition, a wearable power supply constructed by three units can drive the commercial health monitoring system by harvesting body heat. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of electrodes design for wearable thermoelectric applications.

Abstract Background Lymphangiogenesis has been reported to play crucial roles in the metastasis of thyroid cancer (THCA), but despite the significant research on lymphangiogenesis in THCA, the precise regulatory mechanism remains unclear. Methods Public databases including the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), TIMER, and UALCAN were used to analyze and visualize the expression of TET3 and AHR in THCA, and the correlation between these molecules were used by TIMER. Additionally, RT-PCR and Western Blot were performed to determine the mRNA and protein expression of related proteins. Plate colony formation, wound healing, cell cycle, apoptosis, angiogenesis and transwell assay were used to examine the ability of proliferation, movement, lymphangiogenesis, migration and invasion of THCA cells. Results Analysis of the TCGA database revealed higher expression levels of TET3 and AHR in tumor tissue compared to normal tissue in THCA. Additionally, a strong correlation was observed between TET3 and AHR. UALCAN database demonstrated that high expression of TET3 and AHR was associated with advanced THCA TNM stages in THCA patients. Furthermore, TET3 activation accelerated THCA cell proliferation by inducing G2/M phase arrest and suppressing apoptosis, while AHR inactivation reduced THCA cell proliferation by decreasing G2/M phase arrest and promoting apoptosis in vitro. Notably, both TET3 and AHR significantly enhanced THCA cell lymphangiogenesis, migration and invasion. Moreover, TET3 activation and AHR inactivation regulated HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway, which ultimately, blocked the HIF-1α/VEGF in THCA cells and impaired their movement, migration and invasion abilities. Conclusions The combined action of TET3 and AHR to promote lymphangiogenesis in THCA through the HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway, and targeting them might provide a potential treatment strategy for THCA.

Amphibians serve as reliable indicators of ecosystem health and are the most threatened group of vertebrates. Studies on their spatial distribution pattern and threats are crucial to formulate conservation strategies. Gongga Mountains, with a peak at 7509 m a.s.l. and running latitudinally, are in the center of the Hengduan Mountains Range and at the eastern steep edge of the Qinghai–Xizang Plateau, providing heterogeneous habitats and varied niches for amphibians. In this study, we combined 83 days of field work with information from 3894 museum specimens that were collected over the past 80 years, and identified twenty amphibian species belonging to seven families and twelve genera by morphology. Of these species, seven were listed in the threatened categories of the Red List of China’s Biodiversity and thirteen were endemic to China. Ten species were found on the plateau side (western slope) and eleven species were found on the other side close to the Sichuan Basin (eastern slope). Only one species was found on both sides, indicating different community structures horizontally. The species richness was unimodal vertically and peaking at mid elevation on both sides, with the maximum number (ten vs. nine) of species occurring at 3300–3700 vs. 1700–1900 m a.s.l. and in different types of vegetation. The elevation span and body length of species distributed on both slopes did not show significant differences. These findings help to understand the horizontal and vertical distribution pattern of amphibian diversity, laying a foundation for future biogeographical and conservation research in this area.

BackgroundPeer victimization used to be considered as a crucial risk factor for children addicted to the internet. Whereas some victimized ones are function better than would be expected. Variability across individuals indicates that it is necessary to understand how children cope with being bullied and why they do not exhibit maladaptive outcomes.ObjectiveWe explored the underlying mechanisms by testing whether subjective well-being was a mediator between peer victimization and Internet addiction and whether the mediation effects conditioned on the levels of parent–child relationship (PCR).MethodsData were collected from 65, 868 elementary school students in China (Mage = 9.56 years, SD = 0.62, 54.0% male) using four questionnaires.ResultsWe found that: (1) subjective well-being can partially mediate the relationship of the two variables; and (2) PCR can moderate direct path and second half of the intermediary process. These moderating effects were stronger for children with higher PCR vs. lower PCR, as a strong PCR can help children to deal with intense emotions and to access effective resources to obtain support.ConclusionThis study deepens our understanding of how peer victimization leads to internet addiction, identifies a supportive PCR as a crucial factor that strengthens the resilience of child victims, and highlights the value of focusing on improving the relationship between parents and children in intervening internet addiction related to peer victimization.

Facility agriculture in China is facing the challenge of the excessive use of chemical fertilizers (nitrogen fertilizers), which hinder the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture. Optimizing nitrogen fertilizer allocation is essential to balance agricultural production and environmental concerns. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal organic fertilizer strategy for tomato cultivation under different irrigation methods. An experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, and two irrigation methods, surface irrigation (SI) and drip irrigation (SDI), were used during tomato growth. The fertilization treatments included urea alone (CK); 30%, 40%, and 50% chicken manure mixed with urea (FC1, FC2, FC3); and 50% cow manure and sheep manure mixed with urea (FB3, FS3). The results showed that the irrigation techniques and fertilization had significant effects on ammonia volatilization accumulation, soil mineral nitrogen content, and tomato yield and quality. Compared with the surface irrigation technique with the same amount of fertilizer application, the drip irrigation technique reduced the ammonia volatilization accumulation by a maximum of 76.40%. The SDIFC3 and SDIFB3 ammonia volatilization accumulation was as low as 5.24 (kg·hm−2) and 7.61 (kg·hm−2); the soil nitrate nitrogen content was reduced, and the tomato yield increased significantly by 17.11%. The SDIFC3 treatment achieved a maximum yield of 13,414 (kg·hm−2), increased the tomato vitamin C and soluble sugar contents by 19.13% and 8.97%, and lowered the titratable acid content by as much as 30.51%. Under drip irrigation fertilization conditions, the SDIFC3 treatment showed lower ammonia volatilization accumulation and the highest tomato yield and quality compared to CK and the same proportion of organic fertilizer substitutes with cow and sheep manure. The increase in the proportion of organic fertilizers replacing chemical fertilizers resulted in a gradual decrease in ammonia volatilization accumulation and a gradual increase in the tomato yield and various qualities. The soil mineral N content, on the other hand, was significantly affected by irrigation, fertilizer application, and water–fertilizer interaction effects, with a tendency for the content to increase and then decrease after each fertilizer application. The mineral N content was lower with drip irrigation compared to surface irrigation, especially in the 10–20 cm soil layer than in the 0–10 cm layer. Increasing drip irrigation and organic fertilizer substitution significantly increased the vitamin C and soluble sugar contents in the tomatoes, while decreasing the titratable acid content.

Abstract Background Mathematical expressions mainly include arithmetic (such as 8 − (1 + 3)) and algebra (such as a − (b + c)). Previous studies have shown that both algebraic processing and arithmetic involved the bilateral parietal brain regions. Although previous studies have revealed that algebra was dissociated from arithmetic, the neural bases of the dissociation between algebraic processing and arithmetic is still unclear. The present study uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify the specific brain networks for algebraic and arithmetic processing. Methods Using fMRI, this study scanned 30 undergraduates and directly compared the brain activation during algebra and arithmetic. Brain activations, single-trial (item-wise) interindividual correlation and mean-trial interindividual correlation related to algebra processing were compared with those related to arithmetic. The functional connectivity was analyzed by a seed-based region of interest (ROI)-to-ROI analysis. Results Brain activation analyses showed that algebra elicited greater activation in the angular gyrus and arithmetic elicited greater activation in the bilateral supplementary motor area, left insula, and left inferior parietal lobule. Interindividual single-trial brain-behavior correlation revealed significant brain-behavior correlations in the semantic network, including the middle temporal gyri, inferior frontal gyri, dorsomedial prefrontal cortices, and left angular gyrus, for algebra. For arithmetic, the significant brain-behavior correlations were located in the phonological network, including the precentral gyrus and supplementary motor area, and in the visuospatial network, including the bilateral superior parietal lobules. For algebra, significant positive functional connectivity was observed between the visuospatial network and semantic network, whereas for arithmetic, significant positive functional connectivity was observed only between the visuospatial network and phonological network. Conclusion These findings suggest that algebra relies on the semantic network and conversely, arithmetic relies on the phonological and visuospatial networks.

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze spatio-temporal patterns of the global burden caused by main NCDs along the socio-economic development.Methods: We extracted relevant data from GBD 2019. The estimated annual percentage changes, quantile regression and limited cubic splines were adopted to estimate temporal trends and relationships with socio-demographic index.Results: NCDs accounted for 74.36% of global all-cause deaths in 2019. The main NCDs diseases were estimated for cardiovascular diseases, neoplasms, and chronic respiratory diseases, with deaths of 18.56 (17.08–19.72) million, 10.08 (9.41–10.66) million and 3.97 (3.58–4.30) million, respectively. The death burden of three diseases gradually decreased globally over time. Regional and sex variations existed worldwide. Besides, the death burden of CVD showed the inverted U-shaped associations with SDI, while neoplasms were positively correlated with SDI, and CRD showed the negative association.Conclusion: NCDs remain a crucial public health issue worldwide, though several favorable trends of CVD, neoplasms and CRD were observed. Regional and sex disparities still existed. Public health managers should execute more targeted programs to lessen NCDs burden, predominantly among lower SDI countries.

Toxic breakdown products of young Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz, glucosinolates can eliminate microorganisms in the soil. Since microorganisms are essential for phosphate cycling, only insensitive microorganisms with phosphate-solubilizing activity can improve C. sativa’s phosphate supply. In this study, 33P-labeled phosphate, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and pot experiments unveiled that not only Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas laurentiana used as phosphate-solubilizing inoculants, but also intrinsic soil microorganisms, including Penicillium aurantiogriseum, and the assemblies of root-colonizing microorganisms solubilized as well phosphate from apatite, trigger off competitive behavior between the organisms. Driving factors in the competitiveness are plant and microbial secondary metabolites, while glucosinolates of Camelina and their breakdown products are regarded as key compounds that inhibit the pathogen P. aurantiogriseum, but also seem to impede root colonization of T. viride. On the other hand, fungal diketopiperazine combined with glucosinolates is fatal to Camelina. The results may contribute to explain the contradictory effects of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms when used as biofertilizers. Further studies will elucidate impacts of released secondary metabolites on coexisting microorganisms and plants under different environmental conditions.

Abstract The degradation efficiency of fulvic acid (FA) was investigated in the catalytic wet oxidation process (CWPO) by zero-valent copper chitosan activated carbon ball (ZVC/CTS-ACB). Characterization of ZVC/CTS-ACB shows that zero-valent copper was loaded successfully on the chitosan activated carbon. Plackett–Buiman (PB) design and response surface methodology (RSM) were employed to determine the influence factors and the optimum processing parameters. The model was well fitted to the actual data and the correlation coefficients of R2 and R2-adj were 0.9359 and 0.9039, respectively. Under the obtained optimum conditions for FA degradation: temperature = 94 °C and pH 3.8, the average FA removal by three replicate experiments was 93.02%, which has a high consistency to the RSM optimal target response of 93.86%. The comparison of catalytic performance showed that the addition of catalyst ZVC/CTS-ACS could increase the removal rate of FA, color number (CN) and TOC by 93.6%, 83.5% and 81.9% respectively. The high TOC removal rate indicated the good performance of the catalyst to FA mineralization. Additionally, the ICP analysis of copper ion leaching was only 0.08 mg/l after 5 repeated recycles of the catalyst, demonstrating the high stability of ZVC/CTS-ACB that is beneficial for the actual application.

BackgroundGaps remained in the updated information of the firearm violence (FV) burden from a global landscape. Understanding the global burden of FV could contribute to decision-making.MethodsData on the FV burden, including physical violence by firearm (PVF), self-harm by firearm (SHF), and unintentional firearm injuries (UFI), were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. The temporal trends of age-standardized rate (ASR) were estimated using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC).ResultsIn 2019, PVF, SHF, and UFI reported 710.64 × 103, 335.25 × 103, and 2,133.88 × 103, respectively, incident cases worldwide. Their ASR (/100,000 people-years) were 9.31, 4.05, and 28.07. During 1990–2019, the overall incident ASRs of PVF presented an increasing trend (EAPC = 0.61, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.48 to 0.75). Notably, pronounced increasing trends were observed in Tropical Latin America, and North Africa and Middle East. However, incident trends of SHF and UFI declined globally, with the respective EAPCs being −0.68 (95% CI: −0.83 to −0.54) and −0.98 (95% CI: −1.19 to −0.77). In 2019, the ASR of death due to PVF, SHF, and UFI were 2.23, 0.65, and 0.26, and that of DALYs were 127.56, 28.10, and 17.64, respectively. Decreasing trends in the ASRs of FV were observed in most regions and countries worldwide over the past three decades, particularly that of PVF in Estonia.ConclusionThe FV burden was heterogeneous across regions and countries, which was deeply subjected to socioeconomic factors. The findings highlighted that specific prevention strategies and interventions were required, particularly in the high prevalent settings.

The mathematics achievement of minority students has always been a focal point of educators in China. This study investigated the differences in mathematics achievement between Han and minority pupils to determine if there is any cognitive mechanism that can account for the discrepancy. We recruited 236 Han students and 272 minority students (including Uygur and Kazak) from the same primary schools. They were tested on mathematics achievement, language abilities, and general cognitive abilities. The results showed that Han pupils had better mathematics achievement scores and better Chinese language ability than minority students. After controlling for age, gender, and general cognitive abilities, there were still significant differences in mathematics achievement between Han and minority students. However, these differences disappeared after controlling for language ability. These results suggest that the relatively poor levels of mathematics achievement observed in minority students is related to poor Chinese language skills.

In this work, the mechanical behavior and energy absorption characteristics of flexible fabric under hypervelocity impact (HVI) were investigated. Basalt fabric, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fabric, and aluminum alloy (Al) plate were chosen to be the sample materials for their excellent mechanical properties and applicative prospect in spacecraft shielding. HVI experiments had been conducted with the help of a two-stage light-gas gun facility, wherein Al projectile with 3.97 mm diameter was launched at velocities in the range 4.1~4.3 km/s. Impact conditions and areal density were kept constant for all targets. The microstructural damage morphology of fiber post-impact was characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Analysis results show that a brittle fracture occurred for Basalt fiber during HVI. On the contrary, the ductile fractures with large-scale plastic deformation and apparent thermal softening/melting of the material had happened on the UHMWPE fiber when subjected to a projectile impact. According to the HVI shielding performance and microstructural damage analysis results, it can be inferred that ductile fractures and thermal softening/melting of the material were the prevailing energy absorption behaviors of UHMWPE fabric, which leads to absorbing more impact energy than Basalt fabric and eventually, contributes the superior shielding performance.

BackgroundSecondhand smoke is an important risk factor to breast cancer patients’ survival. This article aimed to describe the epidemiological changes of health loss caused by female breast cancer attributable to secondhand smoke from 1990 to 2019.MethodsData on breast cancer was derived from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019. The epidemiological status and trends were estimated using the number, age-standardized rate (ASR), and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC).ResultsIn 2019, secondhand smoke-related breast cancer caused 168.33×102 death, 5242.58×102 years of life lost (YLLs), and 334.03×102 years lived with disability (YLDs) globally. The overall ASR of death and YLLs caused by breast cancer attributable to secondhand smoke presented decreasing trends from 1990 to 2019, with the respective EAPCs of −0.78 and −0.87. Meanwhile, decreasing trends occurred in most geographic regions, particularly that of YLLs in high-income North America (EAPC = −3.35). At the national level, most countries/territories had decreasing trends of death and YLLs, particularly Denmark, in which the respective EAPCs were −4.26 and −4.64. However, the ASR of YLDs showed an increasing trend globally (EAPC = 0.32). Meanwhile, increasing trends were observed in most regions and countries, particularly the Solomon Islands and Lesotho, with the respective EAPCs being 6.18 and 4.33. The changing trends were closely associated with sociodemographic development.ConclusionsTrends in secondhand smoke-related death and YLLs caused by breast cancer declined from 1990 to 2019. However, secondhand smoke remains a challenge to the patients’ longevity and quality of life. The findings informed strategies should be strengthened the control of secondhand smoking.

Shallow bathymetry is important for ocean exploration, and the development of high-precision bathymetry inversion methods, especially for shallow waters with poor quality, is a major research aim. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image data benefit from a wide coverage, high measurement density, rapidity, and low consumption but are limited by low accuracy. Alternatively, multibeam data have low coverage and are difficult to obtain but have a high measurement accuracy. In this paper, taking advantage of the complementary properties, we use SAR image data as the content map and multibeam images as the migrated style map, applying the VGG19 neural network (optimizing the loss function formula) for bathymetric inversion. The model was universal and highly accurate for bathymetric inversion of shallow marine areas, such as turbid water in Taiwan. There was a strong correlation between bathymetric inversion data and measured data (R2 = 0.8822; RMSE = 1.86 m). The relative error was refined by 9.22% over those of previous studies. Values for different bathymetric regions were extremely correlated in the region of 20–40 m. The newly developed approach is highly accurate over 20 m in the open ocean, providing an efficient, precise shallow bathymetry inversion method for complex hydrographic conditions.

Free-standing N-doped carbon nanofiber membranes have been obtained from cellulose acetate (CA) and soy protein isolate (SPI). As an environmental friendliness, inexpensive and abundant polysaccharide in nature, cellulose and its derivatives have shown great potentials in the preparation of energy storage materials. This work successfully fabricated cellulose-based carbon nanofiber membranes through electrospinning, regeneration process and carbonization. Furthermore, this paper has intensively studied the electrospinning parameters of CA (main component) and SPI composite fiber membranes and explored the influence of carbonization temperature on their microstructure and electrochemical properties. The resultant CA-SPI derived carbon nanofiber membranes are applied in supercapacitors (SCs) for the first time, and display good electrochemical performance because of their unique structures and pseudo-capacitance contribution from heteroatoms. The as-received CA-SPI-800 exhibits large specific capacitance of 219.3 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 in 6 M KOH. CA-SPI-800 shows high cycling stability with 98.9% capacitance retention after 50,000 cycles at 20 A g−1. The symmetrical supercapacitor possesses 99% Columbic efficiency and outstanding cycling stability of 94.1% retention after 40,000 charging-discharging processes at 20 A g−1. It is expected that the design of CA-SPI nanofiber membranes will provide a successful route for the preparation of cellulose derived nanofibers, and broaden their applications in low-consumption and green energy storage devices.

As the world economy and society have developed quickly, the amount of farmland soil pollution has become alarming, which has seriously threatened global food security. It is necessary to take effective measures on the moderately contaminated soil to produce high-quality food and to protect food security worldwide by effective use of land resources. Our experimental design was to study the changes in soil physicochemical properties and tomato yield and quality indicators by irrigating tomatoes on cadmium-contaminated soil with two different water qualities (reclaimed water irrigation: RW; tap water irrigation: TW) through drip irrigation devices. Tomato quality indicators were determined using plant physiological assays, as well as vitamin C (VC), total acidity (TA), protein content (PC), and soluble sugar content (SS). We tested five different types of cadmium-contaminated soils (less than 0.60 mg/kg, 0.60–1.20 mg/kg, 1.20–1.80 mg/kg, 1.80–2.40 mg/kg, 2.40–3.00 mg/kg) against RW and TW, and performed high-throughput sequencing of the soils to obtain environmental results for soil microbial diversity. The results reveal that compared with the TW condition, soil nutritional status was increased with the irrigated RW. The yield of the tomatoes increased by 52.03–94.03% than TW. The results of the study showed significant and highly significant relationships between tomato quality indicators (TA, SS, yield) and soil physical and chemical properties indicators (p < 0.01, 0.05). For instance, the RW increased the SOM by 6.54–12.13%, the TP by 0.48–24.73%, the yield of the tomatoes by 52.03–94.03% than TW, while the cadmium content did not show significant differences (p < 0.05), and the cadmium content did not increase the soil’s pollution level. Compared with TW treatment, RW treatment alleviated the inhibition of soil microbial diversity by cadmium and RW also increased its soil microbial diversity. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Bacteroidetes in the RW condition were higher than in the TW condition at different cadmium concentrations. In conclusion, RW improved the overall quality conditions of soil and the diversity of microbial communities, and did not aggravate the pollution degree of cadmium-contaminated soil, and affected the yield of tomatoes positively. RW can be an effective irrigation technique to reduce the use of clean water.

Symbolic and situational mathematics are the two major representations of mathematical knowledge. Although previous literature has studied the relationship between the two from the perspective of teaching practice, learning effectiveness and behavioural performance, there is still a lack of empirical psychological research on cognitive mechanisms to explore the psychological processes of the two. The current study investigated the relationship between symbolic and situational mathematics by determining the differences in cognitive correlates between the two in fourth-grade children. Their symbolic and situational mathematics abilities were assessed using symbolic and situational enumeration tests under the same conditions. Several types of general cognitive abilities, language processing and academic achievements were also examined. Results showed that both situational and symbolic mathematics are crucial for mathematical achievement. Arithmetic computation is closely correlated with symbolic mathematics, whereas spatial processing and inductive reasoning ability are uniquely correlated with situational mathematics. The results suggest that situational and symbolic mathematics have separate cognitive correlates, which means the two are distinct in terms of psychological processing.

Plant metabolites can shape the microbial community composition in the soil. Two indole metabolites, benzoxazolinone (BOA) and gramine, produced by different Gramineae species, and quercetin, a flavonoid synthesized by many dicot species, were studied for their impacts on the community structure of field soil bacteria. The three plant metabolites were directly added to agricultural soil over a period of 28 days. Alterations in bacterial composition were monitored by next generation sequencing of 16S rRNA gene PCR products and phospholipid fatty acid analysis. Treatment of the soil with the plant metabolites altered the community composition from phylum to amplicon sequence variant (ASV) level. Alpha diversity was significantly reduced by BOA or quercetin, but not by gramine. BOA treatment caused a decrease of the relative abundance of 11 ASVs, while only 10 ASVs were increased. Gramine or quercetin treatment resulted in the increase in relative abundance of many more ASVs (33 or 38, respectively), most of them belonging to the Proteobacteria. Isolation and characterization of cultivable bacteria indicated an enrichment in Pseudarthrobacter or Pseudomonas strains under BOA/quercetin or BOA/gramine treatments, respectively. Therefore, the effects of the treatments on soil bacteria were characteristic for each metabolite, with BOA exerting a predominantly inhibitory effect, with only few genera being able to proliferate, while gramine and quercetin caused the proliferation of many potentially beneficial strains. As a consequence, BOA or gramine biosynthesis, which have evolved in different barley species, is accompanied with the association of distinct bacterial communities in the soil, presumably after mutual adaptation during evolution.

Efficient electrogeneration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is critical for treatment of refractory pollutants by the electro-Fenton process. An effective strategy is developed by combining a flow-through reactor with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-modified graphite felt cathode. In this design, anodic oxygen is directly used for efficient H2O2 generation at the modified cathode. Experimental results show that the modified cathode with the optimum PTFE content can produce 29.6 mg/L of H2O2, which is 16 times higher than the unmodified graphite felt cathode for a flow rate of 3 mL/min. Maximum H2O2 production, up to 30.7 mg/L, was obtained under the following conditions: 120 mA, 3 mL/min, initial pH 13, no external aeration.

The large amount of nitrogen application on the North China Plain has caused a serious negative impact on the sustainable development of regional agriculture and ecological environmental protection. Our aim was to explore the effects of nitrogen fertilization rate and groundwater depth on growth attributes, soil-water and soil-fertilizer contents, and the winter wheat yield. Experiments were carried out in micro-lysimeters at groundwater depths of 60, 90, 120, and 150 cm on the basis of 0, 150, 240, and 300 kg/ha nitrogen fertilization rates in the growth season for winter wheat. Results showed that plant height, leaf area index, soil plant analysis development, and yield without nitrogen application increased significantly with increases in groundwater depth. The optimal groundwater depths for growth attributes and yield were 60–120 cm and tended to be shallower with added nitrogen application. Soil moisture was lowered significantly with groundwater depth, adding a nitrogen application reduced soil moisture, and excessive nitrogen input intensified soil drought. Nitrate-N accumulation at the 120–150 cm depths was significantly higher than that at the 60–90 cm depths, and a 300 kg/ha (traditional nitrogen application rate) treatment was 6.7 times greater than that of 150 kg/ha treatment and increased by 74% more than that of the 240 kg/ha treatment at 60–150 cm depth. Compared with the yield of the 300 kg/ha rate, the yield of the 240 kg/ha rate had no significant difference, but the yield increased by 3.90% and 11.09% at the 120 cm and 150 cm depths. The growth attributes and yield of winter wheat were better, and the soil nitrate-N content was lower, when the nitrogen application rate was 240 kg/ha. Therefore, it can be concluded that nitrogen application can be reduced by 20% on the North China Plain.

Background: When mathematical knowledge is expressed in general language, it is called verbalized mathematics. Previous studies on verbalized mathematics typically paid attention to mathematical vocabulary or educational practice. However, these studies did not exclude the role of symbolic mathematics ability, and almost no research has focused on verbalized mathematical principles. Aims: This study is aimed to investigate whether verbalized mathematics ability independently predicts mathematics achievement. The current study hypothesized that verbalized mathematics ability supports mathematics achievement independent of general language, related cognitive abilities and even symbolic mathematical ability. Sample: A sample of 241 undergraduates (136 males, 105 females, mean age = 21.95, SD = 2.38) in Beijing, China. Methods: A total of 12 tests were used, including a verbalized arithmetic principle test, a mathematics achievement test, and tests on general language (sentence completion test), symbolic mathematical ability (including symbolic arithmetic principles test, simple arithmetic computation and complex arithmetic computation), approximate number sense ability (numerosity comparison test) and several related cognitive covariates (including the non-verbal matrix reasoning, the syllogism reasoning, mental rotation, figure matching and choice reaction time). Results: Results showed that the processing of verbalized arithmetic principles displayed a significant role in mathematics achievement after controlling for general language, related cognitive abilities, approximate number sense ability and symbolic mathematics ability. Conclusions: The results suggest that verbalized mathematics ability was an independent predictor and provided empirical evidence supporting the verbalized mathematics role on achievement as an independent component in three-component mathematics model.

Brain-behavior correlations are commonly used to explore the associations between the brain and human behavior in cognitive neuroscience studies. There are many critics of the correlation approach, however. Most problems associated with correlation approaches originate in the weak statistical power of traditional correlation procedures (i.e., the mean-wise interindividual brain-behavior correlation). This paper proposes a new correlation procedure, the item-wise interindividual brain-behavior correlation, which enhances statistical power via testing the significance of small correlation coefficients from trials against zero rather than simply pursuing the highest correlation coefficient. The item-wise and mean-wise correlation were compared in simulations and an fMRI experiment on mathematical problem-solving. Simulations show that the item-wise correlation relative to the mean-wise correlation results in higher t-values when signal-to-noise ratio is equal to or larger than 6%. Item-wise correlation displayed more voxels with significant brain-behavior correlation than did mean-wise correlation. Analyses with item-wise (rather than mean-wise) correlation showed significant brain-behavior correlation at the threshold of p < 0.05 corrected. Cross validation showed that odd- and even-ordered trials have greater stability in terms of the item-wise correlation (r = 0.918) than the mean-wise correlation (r = 0.686). The simulations and example analyses altogether demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed correlation procedure for task neuroimaging studies.

Numerous studies have assessed the cognitive correlates of performance in mathematics, but little research has been conducted to systematically examine the relations between visual perception as the starting point of visuospatial processing and typical mathematical performance. In the current study, we recruited 223 seventh graders to perform a visual form perception task (figure matching), numerosity comparison, digit comparison, exact computation, approximate computation, and curriculum-based mathematical achievement tests. Results showed that, after controlling for gender, age, and five general cognitive processes (choice reaction time, visual tracing, mental rotation, spatial working memory, and non-verbal matrices reasoning), visual form perception had unique contributions to numerosity comparison, digit comparison, and exact computation, but had no significant relation with approximate computation or curriculum-based mathematical achievement. These results suggest that visual form perception is an important independent cognitive correlate of lower level math categories, including the approximate number system, digit comparison, and exact computation.

Background: Early palliative care (PC) has received more attention for improving health-related outcomes for advanced cancer patients in recent years, but the results of previous studies are inconsistent. Objectives: This study aimed to use meta-analysis and trial sequence analysis to evaluate the effect of early PC on health-related outcomes of advanced cancer patients. Methods: All English publications were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from inception to March 2023, with a restriction that the study type was a randomized controlled trial. Results: The results showed that early PC positively affected quality of life, satisfaction with care, and symptom burden reduction. However, early PC had no significant effect on anxiety or survival. Trial sequence analysis results showed that the effect of early PC on the quality of life was stable. Discussion: This systematic review suggested that early PC could positively affect health-related outcomes for advanced cancer patients. Early PC can be used widely in clinical settings to improve health-related outcomes of advanced cancer. However, because of the trial sequence analysis results, further well-designed, clinical, randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes are necessary to draw definitive conclusions.
