Abstract

The treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains a significant difficulty, as there has been no improvement in survival rates over the past fifty years. Hence, exploration and confirmation of new dependable treatment targets and biomarkers is imperative for OSCC therapy. TEAD transcription factors are crucial for integrating and coordinating multiple signaling pathways that are essential for embryonic development, organ formation, and tissue homeostasis. In addition, by attaching to coactivators, TEAD modifies the expression of genes such as Cyr61, Myc, and connective tissue growth factor, hence facilitating tumor progression. Therefore, TEAD is regarded as an effective predictive biomarker due to its significant connection with clinical parameters in several malignant tumors, including OSCC. The efficacy of existing drugs that specifically target TEAD has demonstrated encouraging outcomes, indicating its potential as an optimal target for OSCC treatment. This review provides an overview of current targeted therapy strategies for OSCC by highlighting the transcription mechanism and involvement of TEAD in oncogenic signaling pathways. Finally, the feasibility of utilizing TEAD as an innovative approach to address OSCC and its potential clinical applications were analyzed and discussed.

2. Effects of Foliar Spraying of Dicarboxylicdimethylammonium Chloride on Cadmium and Arsenic Accumulation in Rice Grains

Abstract

A field experiment with double cropping rice was carried out to study the foliar application effects of dicarboxylicdimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) on cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) accumulation in rice grains. The results showed that the spraying of DDAC could significantly reduce the accumulation of Cd and As in rice grains. The highest reductions in Cd and As content were observed when 1.5 mmol L−1 DDAC was sprayed, with 49.1% and 27.4% reductions in Cd and As content in early rice grains and 56.5% and 28.1% reductions in Cd and As content in late rice grains, respectively. In addition, the content of calcium (Ca) in rice grains increased significantly after DDAC foliar application, which was also conducive to the synthesis of amino acids such as glutamate (Glu), glycine (Gly) and cysteine (Cys) in rice grains. The results indicated that the foliar spraying of DDAC can inhibit the absorption, transport, accumulation and toxicity of Cd and As in rice grains by increasing amino acid synthesis and regulating the absorption and transport of essential elements.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a delayed viral infection model with mitosis of uninfected target cells, two infection modes (virus-to-cell transmission and cell-to-cell transmission), and immune response. The model involves intracellular delays during the processes of viral infection, viral production, and CTLs recruitment. We verify that the threshold dynamics are determined by the basic reproduction number $ R_0 $ for infection and the basic reproduction number $ R_{IM} $ for immune response. The model dynamics become very rich when $ R_{IM} > 1 $. In this case, we use the CTLs recruitment delay $ \tau_3 $ as the bifurcation parameter to obtain stability switches on the positive equilibrium and global Hopf bifurcation diagrams for the model system. This allows us to show that $ \tau_3 $ can lead to multiple stability switches, the coexistence of multiple stable periodic solutions, and even chaos. A brief simulation of two-parameter bifurcation analysis indicates that both the CTLs recruitment delay $ \tau_3 $ and the mitosis rate $ r $ have a strong impact on the viral dynamics, but they do behave differently.

4. A Comprehensive Assessment of the Chinese Version of the Duke Activity Status Index in Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases

Abstract

Background: Exercise capacity serves as a direct representation of cardiac function. The Duke Activity Status Index (DASI), a self-administered 12-item questionnaire, covers aspects of daily living, household tasks, sexual function, and physical activity. Although widely used to evaluate exercise capacity, its validation in Chinese cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients has not been thoroughly explored. Considering the significant cultural and lifestyle differences between China and Western countries, which may influence Chinese patients’ comprehension and responses to DASI, our objective is to culturally adapt DASI for Chinese patients with CVD to ensure its precision in assessing exercise capacity. Methods: The cultural adaptation of the original DASI questionnaire into Chinese followed a rigorous process to ensure its validity, reliability, and sensitivity to Chinese CVD patients. The study included 107 outpatients diagnosed with CVD who completed the DASI and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Cronbach’s alpha, Spearman correlation, and factor analysis were utilized to test reliability and validity. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was employed to assess the prognostic utility of the DASI. Results: Participants had a mean DASI score of 39.40 ± 10.75 and a peak oxygen uptake (Peak VO2) of 19.53 ± 5.89 mL/min/kg. The Chinese version of the DASI exhibited satisfactory reliability and validity in CVD patients, with a Chronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.706. The DASI score demonstrated a moderate correlation with Peak VO2 measured by CPET (r = 0.67, p < 0.001). Factor analysis yielded three factors, accounting for 56.76% of the total variance, with factor 1 contributing to 26.38% of the variance. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that the DASI exhibited discriminative utility in the identification of patients with improved long-term prognosis (p < 0.001). The ROC curve had an area of 0.788 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.704–0.871]. The DASI score ≥36.85 served as the optimal threshold for enhanced long-term prognosis, exhibiting a sensitivity of 0.80 and a specificity of 0.69. Conclusions: The culturally adapted DASI questionnaire is a straightforward and efficient tool for reasonably evaluating exercise capacity in Chinese CVD patients.

Abstract

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

10. Spatio-Temporal Differentiation Characteristic and Evolution Process of Meteorological Drought in Northwest China From 1960 to 2018

Abstract

Against the backdrop of global climate change, the response characteristic of meteorological drought is of great concern, especially in the arid or semi-arid regions. By employing the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), TPFW-MK test, Run Theory, Moran’s I, and General G, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristic of drought was clarified and the spatial autocorrelation of local and global drought characteristic variables was explored based on the meteorological data from 122 stations in Northwest China (NWC) during 1960–2018. The results indicated that the drought situation of NWC was improving regardless of annual or seasonal scale. According to the Z-statistics by the TPFW-MK test, there existed an obvious wet trend in west NWC and a slight dry trend in east NWC. The center of gravity migration model revealed that the gravity center of SPI moved towards higher latitude over the last decades, there was a northwest (1960–1990) and northeast (1990–2018) variation in the covering shapes of the standard deviational ellipses of SPI, and the spatial distribution of SPI tended to be concentrated. Meanwhile, the distribution pattern of drought characteristics suggested that more droughts occurred in east of NWC, which were less harmful while fewer droughts happened in west NWC, which brought greater drought damage. The results of global Moran’s I (GMI) indicated that both annual and seasonal drought variables were characterized with significant spatial autocorrelation, the spatial distribution of winter drought variables was more disperse than other seasons, while the damage of summer and autumn drought was bigger than that in spring and winter. Besides, the results of local Moran’s I (LMI) showed that there was obvious agglomeration in the overall distribution of drought characteristic variables, which had a seesaw effect. The spatial distribution of hot spots and cold spots at different confidence levels indicated that Shaanxi Province experienced the most droughts but with shortest duration and lowest severity while northwest Xinjiang had the fewest droughts with longest duration and highest severity. The results of revealing the drought development process and identifying the location of drought aggregation will provide references for supporting climate adaptation strategies and preventing drought-related loss.

11. Effects of Exogenous Chlorinated Amino Acetic Acid on Cadmium and Mineral Elements in Rice Seedlings

To explore the effect of exogenous application of chlorinated amino acetic acid on cadmium (Cd) transport characteristics in rice seedlings, X24 and Z35 rice were taken as the research objects to carry out hydroponics experiments, and the changes of Cd content in rice seedlings, rice mineral elements and amino acid content in rice were analyzed. The results showed that exogenous application of 1.2 mmol·L−1 chlorinated amino acetic acid inhibited cadmium in shoots and roots of rice seedlings; Cd content in shoots and roots were reduced by up to 62.19% and 45.61%, respectively. The majority of cadmium was in the cell wall of shoots and roots; this decreased with the increase of the concentration of chlorinated acetic acid. In addition, the Mn content in shoots and Ca content in roots of rice seedlings increased significantly after the application of chlorinated amino acetic acid. The results of amino acid analysis showed that the contents of aspartic acid, glutamic acid and cystine in rice seedlings were increased. These results indicate that exogenous application of chlorinated amino acetic acid is beneficial to the synthesis of aspartic acid, glutamic acid and cysteine in rice seedlings, increases the content of Mn in shoots and Ca in roots of rice seedlings, and significantly alleviates cadmium stress in seedlings. This provides a theoretical basis for the development of an environmentally friendly Cd-lowering foliar fertilizer for rice.

Abstract

Statistical local kernel principal component analysis (SLKPCA) has demonstrated its success in incipient fault detection of nonlinear industrial processes by incorporating the statistical local analysis (SLA) technology. However, the basic SLKPCA method builds the statistical model only based on the normal data and neglects the utilization of the prior fault information, which is often available in many industrial cases. To take full advantage of the prior fault information, this paper proposes an enhanced SLKPCA method, called primary-auxiliary SLKPCA (PA-SLKPCA), for better incipient fault monitoring. The contribution of the proposed method includes three aspects. First, one primary-auxiliary statistical monitoring framework is designed, by which not only the normal training data are applied to develop a primary SLKPCA model, but also the prior fault data are used to build the auxiliary SLKPCA models. Second, a double-block modeling strategy is developed to construct the auxiliary SLKPCA model for each fault case, where a variable grouping strategy based on Kullback-Leibler divergence is applied to divide the process variables into the fault-relevant group and fault-independent variable group, and the sub-model is developed for each group. Third, the Bayesian inference is used to combine the statistical results of each variable group, and one weighted fusion strategy is further designed to integrate the monitoring results from the primary and auxiliary models. Lastly, two case studies including one numerical system and the simulated continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system are used for method evaluation and the simulations show that the proposed method can detect the incipient faults effectively and outperform the traditional SLKPCA method.

13. Sneezing Aerosol Transport in an Indoor Farmers’ Market

Abstract

The transportation and surface deposition of aerosols from sneezing in a small indoor farmers’ market are studied numerically. The effects of numbers and locations of the entrances and exits of the market are discussed under the condition of natural convection. The results indicate that aerosols leave the indoor environment more quickly when two doors are designed face to face on the walls perpendicular to the natural wind direction compared to other natural ventilation strategies. The concentrations of aerosols accumulated on the surfaces of the stalls and human bodies inside the market are also lower. In this case, the risk of contacting the virus is relatively low among susceptible individuals in the indoor farmers’ markets. Moreover, opening more doors on the walls parallel to the natural wind direction is not beneficial for the fast exhaust of aerosols.

17. Application of 3D-CNN Model in the Diagnosis of COVID-19

Abstract

In recent years, COVID-19 has become the largest epidemic in the world and has had a great impact on the world. The diagnosis of COVID-19 also heavily relies on lung CT. This study presents a COVID-19 CT scan categorization computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) system. The performances of two 3D-CNNmodels with the similar structures are compared. The data used from MosMedData is the Chest CT Scans with COVID-19 Related Findings Dataset. The best segmentation technique for separating the chest tissue from the rest of the CT picture is threshold segmentation. If a volume has several slice groups, the characteristics from each group are extracted and added together to create the eigenvector for the whole CT scanning volume. The combined eigenvectors are then further categorized using a straightforward multi-layer perceptron (MLP) network. One model generated a test set with an accuracy of 78.8%, while the other model generated a test set with an accuracy of 79.8%. This study demonstrates the particular potential of 3D-CNN for COVID-19 diagnosis.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a delayed viral infection model with mitosis of uninfected target cells, two infection modes (virus-to-cell transmission and cell-to-cell transmission), and immune response. The model involves intracellular delays during the processes of viral infection, viral production, and CTLs recruitment. We verify that the threshold dynamics are determined by the basic reproduction number $ R_0 $ for infection and the basic reproduction number $ R_{IM} $ for immune response. The model dynamics become very rich when $ R_{IM} > 1 $. In this case, we use the CTLs recruitment delay $ \tau_3 $ as the bifurcation parameter to obtain stability switches on the positive equilibrium and global Hopf bifurcation diagrams for the model system. This allows us to show that $ \tau_3 $ can lead to multiple stability switches, the coexistence of multiple stable periodic solutions, and even chaos. A brief simulation of two-parameter bifurcation analysis indicates that both the CTLs recruitment delay $ \tau_3 $ and the mitosis rate $ r $ have a strong impact on the viral dynamics, but they do behave differently.

Abstract

In this work, a series of carbon dots (CDs) modified hollow g-C3N4 spheres (HCNS-Cx) were constructed via a double in situ approach using cyanamide and glucose as precursors, respectively. As HCNS-Cx was synthesized by one-step in situ thermal polymerization of two precursors, which could make CDs and g-C3N4 keep tight connection and increase the separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The average diameter and wall thickness of the HCNS-Cx are about 355 nm and 55 nm, respectively. Under the visible light irradiation, the H2 evolution rate (HER) of HCNS-C1.0 (2322 μmol g−1 h−1) was 19 times that of bulk g-C3N4 (122 μmol g−1 h−1) and 1.8 times that of HCNS without CDs modification (1289 μmol g−1 h−1), respectively. And its apparent quantum efficiency is 17.93% at 420 nm. The specific surface area, light absorption capacity, and charge carrier mobility of HCNS-Cx could be dramatically improved due to the introduction of CDs and hollow structures of g-C3N4 spheres, resulting in a significant improvement of photocatalytic activity.

PurposeCorporate social responsibility (CSR) and innovation are the two main approaches firms utilize to promote sustainable development. However, as yet, scholars have reached no consensus regarding their precise impact on construction firm performance (CFP), hindering efforts to implement effective sustainable development strategies that improve CFP. In view that a simple linear relationship may not be sufficient to capture their precise pattern, this study aims to unveil the nonlinear impact of CSR and innovation on CFP, especially when construction firms take up a distinct competitive position.Design/methodology/approachThis study first proposed four hypotheses to establish a new theoretical model by incorporating CSR, innovation, CFP and construction firms' competitive position (CFCP). Then the model was tested by using 292 annual observations collected from 75 construction firms in China. A multiple regression model analysis was carried out to analyze the survey data and validate the hypotheses.FindingsThe results reveal that both CSR and innovation have a U-shaped impact on the price-to-book ratio of a construction firm, a specific CFP measure. CFCP negatively moderates the U-shaped relationship between CSR and CFP, but positively moderates the U-shaped relationship between innovation and CFP.Originality/valueThis study goes beyond a simple linear view, instead of unveiling the nonlinear U-shaped effects of CSR and innovation on CFP that deepen the understanding of their complex relationships in the construction industry and makes construction firms aware that CSR and innovation can only improve performance if they reach a certain level. The moderating role of CFCP provides important implications for construction firms seeking to adopt appropriate competitive strategies related to social responsibility and innovation that both promote CFP and achieve sustainable development.

Abstract

Enhancing the built-in electric field to promote charge dynamitic process is of great significance to boost the performance of the non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs), which has rarely been concerned. In this work, we introduced a cheap ferroelectric polymer as an additive into the active layers of non-fullerene OSCs to improve the device performance. An additional and permanent electrical field was produced by the polarization of the ferroelectric dipoles, which can substantially enhance the built-in electric field. The promoted exciton separation, significantly accelerated charge transport, reduced the charge recombination, as well as the optimized film morphology were observed in the device, leading to a significantly improved performance of the PVDF-modified OSCs with various active layers, such as PM6 : Y6, PM6 : BTP-eC9, PM6 : IT-4F and PTB7-Th : Y6. Especially, a record efficiency of 17.72 % for PM6 : Y6-based OSC and an outstanding efficiency of 18.17 % for PM6 : BTP-eC9-based OSC were achieved.

Abstract

Residual Ca2+ decreases the efficiency and increases the power consumption of the chlor-alkali industry. However, Ca2+ and Na+ sieving is challenging due to the similar ionic radii of these cations. Inspired by the presence of carbonyl oxygens in key selective filters of biological Ca2+ and Na+ channels, we used molecular dynamics to investigate the effects of carbonyl oxygen atoms in modified graphene nanopores of various sizes (characteristic diameters: 0.57–1.50 nm) on Ca2+/Na+ sieving. The results demonstrated that selectivity is closely associated with the different roles of the carbonyl oxygen atoms. In small nanopores, Ca2+ sheds increased numbers of water molecules due to the predominant steric effect of carbonyl oxygen atoms. Thus, Ca2+ must overcome a higher energy barrier than Na+. This requirement prevents the passage of Ca2+. In large nanopores, carbonyl oxygen atoms do preferentially substitute water molecules outside the first hydration shell of Ca2+ compared with those outside the first hydration shell of Na+, thereby hindering Na+ departure from the nanopore. These findings provide useful guidance for the further development of Ca2+ separation materials as sensors and ion separators.

Abstract

given its favourable comprehensive properties, titanium alloy has been extensively developed and used in numerous fields. However, its low thermal conductivity and strong chemical activity have led to its reputation as a difficult-to-machine material. Thus, graphene nanoparticles and sulfur-based extreme pressure (EP) additive were added to rapeseed oil to increase the lubrication and cooling properties of the machining region. In this study, three lubricants were used to machine titanium alloy: rapeseed oil+graphene+sulfur-based EP additive, rapeseed oil+sulfur-based EP additive, and rapeseed oil; and the subsequent wear of cutting tools, cutting temperature, surface roughness, and cutting force were compared. The most favourable results were found for the combination of rapeseed oil+graphene+sulfur-based EP additive, effectively decreasing the temperature of the cutting area and wear of cutting tools. In comparison with rapeseed oil, the flank wear value decreased by 56.4%. Similarly, the surface roughness and cutting force with the rapeseed oil+graphene+sulfur-based EP additive were lowest, showing a decrease of 36.1% and 27.0% respectively when compared with rapeseed oil.

Abstract

In present work, poplar catkin with microtube structure was carbonized at 800 °C in N2 and subsequently the carbonized microtubes were broken into microsheets by ultrasonic crushing. The palladium nanoparticles (NPs) were highly dispersed on the microsheets to form Pd/carbonized poplar catkin (Pd/CPC) composite. The synthesized composite showed extraordinary catalytic performance with high initial turnover frequency of 1613 molH2/(molmetal·h) for formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation. The composite also exhibited high selectivity, good stability and reproducibility during the catalytic process. These results indicate that Pd/CPC nanocatalyst has particular potential for hydrogenation reactions from hydrogen-rich substrates in practical applications.

Early detection of incipient faults is a challenging task in chemical process monitoring field. As an effective incipient fault detection tool, statistical local kernel principal component analysis (SLKPCA) has demonstrated its advantage over the traditional kernel principal component analysis (KPCA). However, how to improve its incipient fault detection performance is still a valuable problem. In this paper, an enhanced SLKPCA method, referred to as two-dimensional weighted SLKPCA (TWSLKPCA), is proposed by integrating the sample and component weighting strategies. Abstract

Large-scale production of clean and renewable fuels is crucial for satisfying the world's energy needs, and hydrogen evolution via photo-driven water splitting stands as a prime candidate to fill this need. In present work, we converted carbonized poplar catkins (CPC) microtubes into microsheets by ultrasonic crushing and subsequently deposited CdS nanoparticles on the microsheets to synthesize the CdS/carbon (CdS/CPC) photocatalyst for photo-driven hydrogen evolution. The carbon microsheets were ∼160 nm thick and 1–20 μm wide in dimensions, and CdS nanoparticles with a diameter of ∼20 nm were homogeneously dispersed on the microsheets. The CdS/CPC composites showed a higher visible-light absorption and larger photocurrent density compared with pure CdS. The as-prepared composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for water splitting, and the H2-evolution rate was up to 5367 μmol g−1 h−1, approximately 7.8 times that of pure CdS. Moreover, CdS/CPC-2 can retain 93.8% of its original H2-evolution rate after 4-cycle continuous catalyzing last for 16 h. The extremely high activity of CdS/CPC can be attributed to its lower interfacial charge-transfer resistance and the effective separation of photo-induced electrons because of two-dimensional structure. A combination of low-cost production and excellent photocatalytic H2-evolution demonstrates the potential application of bio-derived carbon-based microsheets for noble-metal-free photocatalyst.

Abstract

We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination. Abstract

Structure Illumination Microscopy (SIM) is a wide-field super-resolution fluorescence imaging technology with characteristics such as fast imaging speed and low phototoxicity. By projecting sinusoidal patterns at the sample plane, the high-frequency information in Fourier space which is out of the optical transfer function of the optical system is loaded into the low-frequency information and collected by the objective lens. However, due to the mechanical error of the system, the fringes in the collected data often have some deviation from the presupposed initial values. These systemic errors of fringe will directly affect the quality of the reconstructed SIM image, among which Fringe modulation depth is a very important parameter. Here, we explored the SIM reconstruction method based on the U-net neural network architecture recently reported by Luhong Jin et al.We performed a simulation to validate the method. Specifically, we use an open source fluorescent-bead images for the training and testing. We found that after training, the output of the trained neural network is very close to the ground truth, and then the super-resolution information can be well recovered from the low-modulation SIM raw images. We then further performed the similar study on the images of real biological structures which are also available as an open source dataset. Our study thus demonstrates that the deep learning neural network algorithm can significantly relax the requirement on the fringe modulation depth.Therefore, the simplified SIM system without any polarization modulation can be expected.

Abstract

Non-smooth Filippov systems may be used to provide natural description and characterize ecosystems with threshold control strategies. One common control strategy is the economic threshold ( E T ) often seen in integrated pest management. Recently switching systems consisting of free and controlled subsystems and guided by the threshold E T were developed and investigated. The key hypothesis in these systems is to consider only the pest density against a certain threshold value to construct the switching condition. This means that the rapid or saturated growth of pest population was not taken into account. Practical pest control strategies depend not only on the number of pests, but also on the growth rate of pests. This paper examines a new switching system guided by weighting the pest number and its growth rate as the threshold level. Theoretical analyses reveal that the proposed threshold strategy results in nonlinear sliding curve with complex sliding mode dynamics including multiple sliding segments and pseudo-equilibrium, confirmed by the sliding segment bifurcations. Moreover, the local and global sliding bifurcations clarify the fact that variations of E T and the new threshold control strategy not only lead to rich sliding dynamics such as various sliding periodic solutions, but also have important consequences on pest control.

Abstract

A non-smooth SIR Filippov system is proposed to investigate the impacts of three control strategies (media coverage, vaccination and treatment) on the spread of an infectious disease. We synthetically consider both the number of infected population and its changing rate as the switching condition to implement the curing measures. By using the properties of the Lambert W function, we convert the proposed switching condition to a threshold value related to the susceptible population. The classical epidemic model involving media coverage, linear functions describing injecting vaccine and treatment strategies is examined when the susceptible population exceeds the threshold value. In addition, we consider another SIR model accompanied with the vaccination and treatment strategies represented by saturation functions when the susceptible population is smaller than the threshold value. The dynamics of these two subsystems and the sliding domain are discussed in detail. Four types of local sliding bifurcation are investigated, including boundary focus, boundary node, boundary saddle and boundary saddle-node bifurcations. In the meantime, the global bifurcation involving the appearance of limit cycles is examined, including touching bifurcation, homoclinic bifurcation to the pseudo-saddle and crossing bifurcation. Furthermore, the influence of some key parameters related to the three treatment strategies is explored. We also validate our model by the epidemic data sets of A/H1N1 and COVID-19, which can be employed to reveal the effects of media report and existing strategy related to the control of emerging infectious diseases on the variations of confirmed cases.

Abstract

Kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) utilizes kernel trick to extract the nonlinear features and has demonstrated its effectiveness in many nonlinear process monitoring systems. However, the traditional KPCA ignores the dynamic property of process data and does not highlight local variable information. To provide better monitoring performance, a fault detection method based on multi-block dynamic KPCA (MDKPCA) is proposed to monitor nonlinear processes. Firstly, mutual information is calculated between different variables and kernel principal components (KPC), which is used to divide the monitored variables into several local variable blocks. Then, by using the idea of exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA), a multivariable dynamic KPCA model is established for each variable block. Finally, Bayesian theory is used to integrate the results of each blocks. The simulation results on the benchmark Tennessee Eastman (TE) process show that the proposed MDKPCA method is superior to the traditional KPCA method.

We reported that Ag3PO4 exhibits excellent photocatalytic properties for organic dye decomposition under visible-light irradiation. Herein, studies of photocatalytic performance have indicated that nano rhombic dodecahedrons (S1) exhibit much higher activities than micro rhombic dodecahedrons (S3) for the degradation of organic contaminants.

Abstract

A simple approach has been developed to fabricate ideal supercapacitors based on porous Mn(3)O(4)-Co(3)O(4) nanocubic composite electrodes. We can easily obtain porous corner-truncated nanocubic Mn(3)O(4)-Co(3)O(4) composite nanomaterials without any subsequent complicated workup procedure for the removal of a hard template, seed or by using a soft template. In such a composite, the porous Mn(3)O(4)-Co(3)O(4) enables a fast and reversible redox reaction to improve the specific capacitance. The porous nanocubic Mn(3)O(4)-Co(3)O(4) composite electrode can effectively transport electrolytes and shorten the ion diffusion path, which offers excellent electrochemical performance. These results suggest that such porous Mn(3)O(4)-Co(3)O(4) composite nanocubes are very promising for next generation high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract

Most of the existing techniques for the characterization of Web documents are based on term-frequency analysis. In such models, given a set of documents, the characterization of each document is represented by a feature vector in a vector space. However, as Web documents written in HTML are semi-structured by means of tags, the traditional techniques that assign term weights only by the frequency of occurrence may not be able to provide satisfactory results in representing the content of such documents. Some recent studies have shown that the fuzzy representation (FR) of WWW information based on the significance of HTML tags is an effective alternative for characterizing Web documents. In this paper, the FR is used to generate the feature vector for each Web document and the hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC) algorithm is applied to investigate its efficiency and effectiveness for the automatic categorization of Web documents with similar contents. Experiments that have been conducted suggest several benefits of using such an approach.

Mesoporous uniform ammonium nickel phosphate hydrate nanostructures are successfully prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method. As a result of the unique feature of large surface area (418 m2 g−1) and tunable mesostructures, the material exhibits good performance as supercapacitor electrodes, with a specific capacitance of 1072 F g−1 in 3.0 M KOH at a current density of 1.50 A g−1, and show a good cycle life which does not obviously decay after 3000 cycles (the retention 95.0% of initial specific capacitance after 3000 cycles).

Abstract

New porous bipyramid, fusiform and plate structured NiMn2O4 materials have been successfully synthesized by calcining oxalate precursors in the air without using any template or surfactant. More importantly, electrochemical measurements show that morphology affects their electrochemical properties, and the porous plate structured NiMn2O4 showed a large specific capacitance and a long cycle life.
