Enhancing corrosion resistance of Mg-Zn alloys with high strength and low cost was critical for broadening their large-scale practical applications. Here we prepared solutionized, peak- and over-aged ZK60 alloys with and without microalloying Ca (0.26 wt.%) to explore the effects of nanoscale precipitates on their corrosion behavior in detail via experimental analyses and theoretical calculations. The results suggested the peak-aged ZK60 alloy with Ca addition showed improved corrosion resistance in comparison with the alloys without Ca, owing to the contribution of Ca on the refinement of precipitates and increase in their number density. Although the precipitates and Mg matrix formed micro-galvanic couples leading to dissolution, the fine and dense precipitates could generate “in-situ pinning” effect on the corrosion products, forming a spider-web-like structure and improving the corrosion inhibition ability accordingly. The pinning effect was closely related to the size and number density of precipitates. This study provided important insight into the design and development of advanced corrosion resistant Mg alloys.

It is still challenging to synchronously improve mechanical properties and corrosion resistance through one strategy during developing Mg alloys. Introducing high-density precipitates is an effective and popular approach to strengthen Mg alloys, while these precipitates generally degrade the corrosion resistance. In this paper, the nanoprecipitates are developed in Mg-13.4Gd-2.2Ag-0.4Zr wt.% cast alloy through the solution and aging treatment for evading this dilemma. Compared with its as-cast counterpart, the peak-aged alloy with high-density nanoprecipitates exhibits enhanced strength, comparable ductility, and improved corrosion resistance. The nanoprecipitates in the peak-aged alloy are composed of β nanoparticles at grain boundaries, and intragranular γ′′ and β′ nanoplates. These nanoprecipitates are contributed to the improved strength through the Orowan mechanism. The β nanoparticles induce weak galvanic corrosion, and the γ′′ nanoplates have not induced visible galvanic corrosion, thus contributing to the enhanced corrosion resistance of the peak-aged alloy. This result suggests that developing nanoprecipitate is a feasible route to collaboratively optimize the mechanical and corrosion properties of the Mg alloys.

Most metals including Mg alloys have a longstanding dilemma of strength-ductility trade-off, which is hindering their wider applications. In this study, we propose a gradient heterogeneous grain (GHG) structure for evading this trade-off dilemma and ultrasonic severe surface rolling is attempted to construct this novel structure in ZE41 Mg alloy. Here, the GHG structure combine the benefits of gradient structure and heterogeneous grain structure and introduce large microstructural heterogeneities. Compared to the coarse-grain and heterogeneous-grain structured alloys, the GHG structured one exhibits dramatical enhancement in strength, ductility, and strain hardening capability. To the best of our knowledge, its strength becomes much higher than that of common ZE41 Mg alloys at no reduction in ductility. These unique mechanical properties stem from not only the individual contribution of the heterogeneous structure components including the fine/ultrafine grains and deformed coarse grains but also their synergistic effect via hetero-deformation induced strengthening and hardening effects. In summary, our study provides a feasible way to develop new Mg alloys with high strength and good ductility.

Abstract Background Progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) is a rare genetic condition that causes progressive ossification. This usually results from an inactivating mutation of the paternal GNAS gene. Herein, we report a case of POH caused by a novel mutation in exon 2 of the GNAS gene. Case presentation A 5-year-old Chinese boy was referred to our hospital for a growing mass in his right foot. Although laboratory findings were normal, radiographic imaging revealed severe ossification in his right foot and smaller areas of intramuscular ossification in his arms and legs. A de novo mutation (c.175C > T, p.Q59X) in exon 2 of the GNAS gene was identified, prompting a diagnosis of POH. We conducted a systematic literature review to better understand this rare disease. Conclusion We have discovered that a de novo nonsense mutation in exon 2 of GNAS can lead to POH. Our literature review revealed that ankylosis of the extremities is the primary clinical outcome in patients with POH. Unlike other conditions such as fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), patients with POH do not experience respiratory failure. However, much remains to be learned about the relationship between the type of GNAS gene mutation and the resulting POH symptoms. Further research is needed to understand this complex and rare disease. This case adds to our current understanding of POH and will contribute to future studies and treatments.

Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) comprises a group of disorders characterized by recurrent bouts of systemic inflammation related to overactivation of inflammasome. So far, neither large cases of the correlation between genotype and phenotype nor treatment strategies have been clearly stated in China. Here, we studied the clinical and genetic characteristics and their correlation from 30 CAPS patients in China. We identified the pathogenesis for novel mutations by activating NLRP3 inflammasome for peripheral cells with ATP plus LPS, compared characteristics with other case series, and analyzed treatment outcomes of these patients. The patients harbored 19 substitutions in NLRP3, and 8 of them were novel mutations. Among these novel mutations, percentages of severe musculoskeletal, ophthalmologic, and neurological symptoms were higher compared with other case serials. The correlation of phenotypes and their variants seemed different in our cases, such as T350M, S333G/I/R, and F311V (somatic mosaicism). Ten patients received Canakinumab treatment, which proved effective at alleviating musculoskeletal, neurological, auditory, visual manifestations, fever, and rash for 10–20 months follow-up. Patients treated with prednisolone or prednisolone plus thalidomide or methotrexate, tocilizumab, TNF inhibiting agents, and sirolimus achieved only partial remission. Importantly, we firstly identified somatic mosaicism mutation of F311V, which was severe. Our study extended the spectrum of genotype and phenotype and characteristics of their correlations and provided detailed responses to different treatment strategies. These data provide guidance for future diagnosis and management for CAPS.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is one of the common methods of additive manufacturing and herein, ultrasonic severe surface rolling (USSR) is applied to enhance the corrosion resistance of SLM 316L stainless steel (SS) in the 3.5% NaCl solution. USSR produces a thick (∼1 mm) gradient surface layer with a nanostructured, chemically homogeneous, and high-quality surface but a small amount of martensite. The USSR processed 316L SS exhibits significant enhancement in the corrosion resistance compared to the SLM one, as manifested by the greatly improved pitting potential, decreased passive current density, and reduced corrosion current density. The superior corrosion properties stem from the unique gradient structure with a high density of grain boundaries and chemically homogeneous and high-quality surface facilitating the formation of a thicker and more protective passive film that contains larger contents of oxides and hydroxides of Fe and Cr in spite of almost the same total Cr concentration. In addition to the high strength and ductility, the unique gradient structure endows the SLM 316L SS with superior corrosion resistance and long service lifetime in the marine environment, boding well for application to marine equipment and engineering.

Armillaria mellea polysaccharides (AMPs) were obtained by ultrasonic assisted extraction (U), enzyme assisted extraction (E) and ultrasonic-enzyme assisted extraction (UE), respectively. The yield of UE-AMPs (6.32 ± 0.14%) was 1.64 times higher than that of U-AMPs (3.86 ± 0.11%) and 1.21 times higher than that of E-AMPs (5.21 ± 0.09%); meanwhile, the highest total sugar content and the lowest protein content were found in UE-AMPs. AMPs obtained from the three extraction methods had the same monosaccharide composition but in different proportions, allowing UE-AMPs to have the most potent antioxidant activity. The antidiabetic activity of UE-AMPs was investigated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. In this study, the stable system of bilayer emulsion was fabricated by ultrasonic emulsification. The effect of chitosan (CS) addition (0.05 %-0.4 %, w/v) at pH 5.0 on the stability of rice bran protein hydrolysate-ferulic acid (RBPH-FA) monolayer emulsion was investigated. It was found that the addition of CS (0.3 %) could form a stable bilayer emulsion. The droplet size was 3.38 μm and the absolute ζ-potential value was 31.52 mV. The bilayer emulsion had better storage stability, oxidation stability and environmental stabilities than the monolayer emulsion. The results of in vitro simulations revealed the bilayer emulsion was able to deliver the β-carotene to the small intestine digestive stage stably and the bioaccessibility was increased from 22.34 % to 61.36 % compared with the monolayer emulsion. The research confirmed that the bilayer emulsion prepared by ultrasonic emulsification can be used for the delivery of hydrophobic functional component β-carotene.

A homogeneously ultrafine-grained (UFG) Cu-38 Zn alloy with an average grain size of 0.64 μm is successfully fabricated by equal channel angular processing (ECAP), which exhibits a significantly enhanced strength-ductility synergy. The strength enhancement can be attributed to grain refinement and dislocation strengthening. After annealing the ECAP processed alloy at 300 °C for 30 min, a further enhanced strength with almost unchanged ductility was achieved. This unusual annealing strengthens is associated with the solute/impurity segregation and precipitations inside the grains.

The design and construction of luxury cruise ships is currently a hot topic in the domestic shipbuilding industry, but the design skills are insufficient due to a lack of practical experience derived from real projects. First, based on a survey of the internal R&D and refitting design of luxury cruise ships and ferry/passenger ship projects with gross tonnages of 15 000–75 000, as well as referring to the latest developments in rules regarding cruise and passenger ships, and the design features of delivered ships across the world, this paper seeks to review the relevant advanced technologies employed in the international design and construction of luxury cruise ships, with a focus on 3D modelling, flexible design throughout the full life cycle, holistic ship performance optimal design and alternative design application. Moreover, the effects of the application of green fuel, digital and intelligent design, and health and hygiene safety requirements on the future design of cruise ships are discussed. It is hoped that this paper can provide valuable references for improving the domestic design level of luxury cruise ships.

In this article, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the precipitation behaviour of the Cu-rich phase in Al-free and 1Al Cu-bearing ferrite stainless steels; and further, the effects of Al addition on the precipitation and coarsening of the Cu-rich phase and its mechanism were analysed. The results show that Al increases the nucleation rate of the Cu-rich phase, and refines Cu-rich nanoprecipitates after ageing for 1 min. The Cu-rich phase with four crystal structures-BCC, 9R, twin FCC, and non-twin FCC were found in the Al-free sample during ageing. However, only Cu-rich phase with BCC and BCT structures were observed after Al addition. There are high-density edge dislocations in Al-containing Cu-rich nanoprecipitates. These dislocations can be used as a diffusion channel for solute atoms, increasing the coarsening rate of the Cu-rich phase. However, with the extension of the ageing time, dislocations in the Cu-rich phase will be annihilated owing to the thermal activation and the decrease of the Al concentration in the Cu-rich phase, which will lead to a decrease in the dislocation density in Al-containing Cu-rich phase. Finally, the promotion effect of Al on the coarsening of the Cu-rich phase is weakened.

As one of the most critical parameters to evaluate the quality and performance of mobile phones, real-time temperature monitoring of mobile phones’ integrated chips is vital in the electronics industry. Although several different strategies for the measurement of chips’ surface temperature have been proposed in recent years, distributed temperature monitoring with high spatial resolution is still a hot issue with an urgent need to be solved. In this work, a fluorescent film material with photothermal properties containing thermosensitive upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is fabricated for the monitoring of the chips’ surface temperature. The presented fluorescent films have thicknesses ranging from 23 to 90 μm and are both flexible and elastic. Using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, the temperature-sensing properties of these fluorescent films are investigated. The maximum sensitivity of the fluorescent film was measured to be 1.43% K−1 at 299 K. By testing the temperature at different positions of the optical film, distributed temperature monitoring with a high spatial resolution down to 10 μm on the chip surface was successfully achieved. It is worth mentioning that the film maintained stable performance even under pull stretching up to 100%. The correctness of the method is verified by taking infrared images of the chip surface with an infrared camera. These results demonstrate that the as-prepared optical film is a promising anti-deformation material for monitoring temperature with high spatial resolution on-chip surfaces.

It is challenging to develop Mg alloys with high strength-ductility synergy and isotropic mechanical properties. An industrial-scale ultrafine-grained (UFG) Mg-10.6Gd-2Ag wt. % alloy with excellent strength-ductility synergy and near-isotropic mechanical behavior was made by an industrial-scale rotary die equal channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP). The microstructure of the UFG alloy involves the primarily submicron α-Mg grains with an average grain size of 760.5 nm and the high-density submicron β phase (Mg5Gd) precipitates (267.8 nm). Room temperature tensile tests results reveal that the UFG alloy exhibits an over three times tensile yield strength, near two times ultimate tensile strength, and more than one and a half times elongation along three orthogonal test directions than the as-cast Mg alloy. The improvement of strength is linked to the effect of the grain boundary strengthening as well as the precipitation strengthening. The enhanced ductility is ascribed to the ultrafine grains with low dislocation density, which provide a degree of dislocation storage capacity and facilitates multiple potential deformation modes. The near-isotropic mechanical behavior stems from the weak texture and multiple deformation modes.

In the present work, AZ91 alloy was successfully processed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) for up to 16 passes and rolling (R) for multiple passes with a total reduction of 75% in addition to a combination method with ECAP plus rolling (ECAP+R). The effects of various processes (ECAP, R and ECAP+R) on microstructure evolution were analyzed and the influence of ECAP process on the rolling performance was examined. The result shows that ECAP contributed to a homogenous grain structure and formed a texture with higher Schmidt factors that was easy for rolling. A plate with smoother surface and reduced edge cracks was observed in the ECAP+R process than in the single R process. Although the microstructure of the alloy was similar after ECAP+R and R process, the sample of ECAP+R was more refined and had stronger second phase precipitation than the sample of R, which resulted in better rolling characteristics, along with the external surfaces. Multistable mechanical metamaterials are a type of mechanical metamaterials with special features, such as reusability, energy storage and absorption capabilities, rapid deformation, and amplified output forces. These metamaterials are usually realized by series and/or parallel of bistable units. They can exhibit multiple stable configurations under external loads and can be switched reversely among each other, thereby realizing the reusability of mechanical metamaterials and offering broad engineering applications. This paper reviews the latest research progress in the design strategy, manufacture and application of multistable mechanical metamaterials. We divide bistable structures into three categories based on their basic element types and provide the criterion of their bistability. Various manufacturing techniques to fabricate these multistable mechanical metamaterials are introduced, including mold casting, cutting, folding and three-dimensional/4D printing. Furthermore, the prospects of multistable mechanical metamaterials for applications in soft driving, mechanical computing, energy absorption and wave controlling are discussed. Finally, this paper highlights possible challenges and opportunities for future investigations. The review aims to provide insights into the research and development of multistable mechanical metamaterials.

A superhydrophobic surface can endow metals with some intriguing characteristics such as self-cleaning behavior. In this study, a simple solution-immersion method based on the concept of predesigned corrosion is developed to enhance the corrosion resistance of a magnesium-neodymium alloy. The Mg alloy is directly soaked in potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution with the addition of ultrasound, and a layer of rough but dense coating is uniformly formed on the Mg-Nd alloy after the immersion process, which is mainly composed of MgHPO4∙3H2O. A superhydrophobic surface with an average wetting angle of 150.5° and a sliding angle of about 4.5° can be obtained on the Mg alloy by further chemical surface modification with perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane. This superhydrophobic surface has an interesting self-cleaning effect as well as good corrosion resistance in artificial hand sweat. In brief, this study provides a feasible way to prepare a superhydrophobic surface on the Mg-Nd alloy and reveals the effect of a superhydrophobic surface on the corrosion behavior of the Mg-Nd alloy, offering new technical insights into the corrosion protection of magnesium alloys.

In this study, the multi-pass equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was employed on a high-calcium-content Mg-Al-Ca-Mn alloy to tailor its microstructure and mechanical properties. The obtained results showed that the network-shaped Mg2Ca and (Mg, Al)2Ca eutectic compounds in as-cast alloy were gradually crushed into ultra-fine particles after ECAP, which exhibited a bimodal particle size distribution and most aggregated at original grain boundaries. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of α-Mg occurred during hot deformation via a particle stimulated mechanism, and the almost complete DRX with an average grain size around 1.5 µm was obtained after 12p-ECAP. Moreover, abundant nano-sized acicular and spherical precipitates were dynamically precipitated within α-Mg grains during ECAP. Tensile test results indicated that the maximum strength and ductility were acquired for 12p-ECAP alloy with ultimate tensile strength of 372 MPa and fracture elongation of 8%. The enhanced strength of the alloy could be ascribed to fine DRX grains, ultra-fine Ca-containing particles and dynamically precipitated nano-precipitates, while the improved ductility was mainly due to the refined and homogeneous microstructure, and weak texture with high average Schmid factors. Designing a gradient nanostructure is regarded as an effective strategy for strengthening commercial pure Ti without seriously sacrificing ductility. However, the corrosion behavior of the gradient nanostructured (GNS) pure Ti is far from clear, especially in reducing acid in which pure Ti shows poor corrosion resistance. The present paper aims at investigating the corrosion behavior of GNS pure Ti in hydrochloric acid by electrochemical method. The GNS surface layer is produced by a recently developed method called ultrasonic severe surface rolling. The GNS pure Ti exhibits spontaneous passivation behavior as well as the coarse-grained one in 1 M HCl. Due to the GNS surface layer, the corrosion current density and passive current density decrease by 70% and 54%, respectively, giving rise to significantly enhanced corrosion resistance and passivation ability. The better corrosion resistance is believed to be ascribed to the high-density grain boundaries and dislocations induced by the surface nano-grained structure as well as the smooth surface with few surface defects. The USSR processing also enlarges the static water contact angle of the pure Ti to 61.0 ± 0.3°.

A gradient structure (GS) design is a prominent strategy for strength-ductility balance in metallic materials, including Cu alloys. However, producing a thick GS surface layer without surface damage is still a challenging task limited by the available processing technology. In this work, a gradient structure (GS) surface layer with a thickness at the millimeter scale is produced in the Cu-38 wt.% Zn alloy using ultrasonic severe surface rolling technology at room temperature. The GS surface layer is as thick as 1.1 mm and involves the gradient distribution of grain size and dislocation density. The grain size is refined to 153.5 nm in the topmost surface layer and gradually increases with increasing depth. Tensile tests indicate that the single-sided USSR processed alloy exhibits balanced strength (467.5 MPa in yield strength) and ductility (10.7% in uniform elongation). Tailoring the volume fraction of the GS surface layer can tune the combination of strength and ductility in a certain range. The high strength of GS surface layer mainly stems from the high density of grain boundaries, dislocations and dislocation structures, deformation twins, and GS-induced synergistic strengthening effect. Our study elucidates the effect of the thick GS surface layer on strength and ductility, and provides a novel pathway for optimizing the strength-ductility combination of Cu alloys.

Abstract ATP-binding cassette A3 (ABCA3) is a phospholipid carrier that is mainly expressed in the alveolar epithelium. Biallelic mutations of ABCA3 has been associated with fatal respiratory distress syndrome and interstitial lung disease (ILD) in children. However, whether variations in ABCA3 have a role in the development of adult ILD, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), remains to be addressed. In this study, we screened for germline variants of ABCA3 by exons-sequencing in 30 patients with sporadic IPF and in 30 matched healthy controls. Eleven missense variants, predominantly in heterozygous, were found in 13 of these patients, but only two missenses in 2 healthy controls. We then selected four of the detected missense variants (p.L39V, p.S828F, p.V968M and p.G1205R) to performed cohort analysis in 1,024 ILD patients, containing 250 IPF and 774 connective tissue disease-ILD (CTD-ILD) patients, and 1,054 healthy individuals. Our results showed that the allele frequency of p.G1205R, but not p.L39V, was significantly higher in ILD patients than in healthy controls. However, no additional subject carrying the variant p.S828F or p.V968M was detected in the cohort analysis. These results indicate that the heterozygous ABCA3 gene variants may contribute to susceptibility to diseases in the Chinese population.

Developing magnesium alloys with both high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties is a long-standing challenge for the lightweight metal community. Herein, processing route combining equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) and water annealing to achieve simultaneous improvements on both anti-corrosion and mechanical performances of a Mg-2Zn-Mn-Ca-Ce alloy is proposed. The cast alloy was ECAP-processed at 573 k for 12 passes to obtain ultra-fine grains (UFG), followed by water annealing in the autoclave under 160 °C for 3 h. The treated sample exhibits significantly improved corrosion resistance, presenting less corrosion current density and hydrogen evolution rate in the Hanks' solution. The doubled yield/ultimate strength and elongation, as well as the better-maintained mechanical integrity after corrosion, were achieved simultaneously. The profuse dislocations and grain boundaries in the UFG substrate offer intensive hydrothermal-reaction driving force, favoring the formation of a thicker and more compact Mg(OH)2 coating layer. Such a protective coating layer together with the annealed substrate with fewer crystal defects effectively retards the corrosion degradation and preserves the mechanical integrity afterwards. Meanwhile, the modified heterogeneous substrate microstructure results in the observed superior strength-ductility synergy. The proposed processing route and the resulted comprehensive properties should be applicable to other magnesium alloys as well. The influence of temperature and strain rate on the hot tensile properties of 0Cr18AlSi ferritic stainless steel, a potential structural material in the ultra-supercritical generation industry, was investigated at temperatures ranging from 873 to 1123 K and strain rates of 1.7 × 10−4−1.7 × 10−2 s−1. The microstructural evolution linked to the hot deformation mechanism was characterized by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). At the same strain rate, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decrease rapidly from 873 K to 1023 K and then gradually to 1123 K. Meanwhile, both yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increase with the increase in strain rate. At high temperatures and low strain rates, the prolonged necking deformation can be observed, which determines the ductility of the steel to some extent. The maximum elongation is obtained at 1023 K for the strain rates of 1.7 × 10−3 and 1.7 × 10−2 s−1, while this temperature is postponed to 1073 K once decreasing the strain rate to 1.7 × 10−4 s−1. Dynamic recovery (DRV) and continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) are found to be the main softening mechanisms during the hot tensile deformation. With the increase of temperature and the decrease of strain rate (i.e., 1123 K and 1.7 × 10−4 s−1), the sub-grain coalescence becomes the main mode of CDRX that evolved from the sub-grain rotation. The gradual decrease in strength above 1023 K is related to the limited increase of dynamic recrystallization and the sufficient DRV. The area around the new small recrystallized grains on the coarse grain boundaries provides the nucleation site for cavity, which generally results in a reduction in ductility. Constitutive analysis shows that the stress exponent and the deformation activation energy are 5.9 and 355 kJ·mol−1 respectively, indicating that the dominant deformation mechanism is the dislocations motion controlled by climb. This work makes a deeply understanding of the hot deformation behavior and its mechanism of the Al-bearing ferritic stainless steel and thus provides a basal design consideration for its extensive application.

Silicon undergoes a brittle-to-ductile transition as its characteristic dimension reduces from macroscale to nanoscale. The thorough understanding of the plastic deformation mechanism of silicon at the nanoscale is still challenging, although it is essential for developing Si-based micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). Given the wide application of silicon in extreme conditions, it is, therefore, highly desirable to reveal the nanomechanical behavior of silicon from cryogenic temperature to elevated temperature. In this paper, large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to reveal the spherical nanoindentation response and plastic deformation mechanism of (110)Si at the temperature range of 0.5 K to 573 K. Special attention was paid to the effect of temperature. Multiple pop-ins detected in load/pressure-indentation strain curves are impacted by temperature. Four featured structures induced by nanoindentation, including high-pressure phases, extrusion of α-Si, dislocations, and crack, are observed at all temperatures, consistent with experiment results. The detailed structure evolution of silicon was revealed at the atomic scale and its dependence on temperature was analyzed. Furthermore, structure changes were correlated with pop-ins in load/pressure-indentation strain curves. These results may advance our understanding of the mechanical properties of silicon.

In this paper, the effect of the equal-channel-angular-pressed (ECAPed) substrate on the coating formation and anticorrosion performance of the anodized Al−11Si alloy was systematically investigated. The ECAP process dramatically refines both Al and Si phases of the alloy. The parallel anodizing circuit is designed to enable a comparative study of anodizing process between the cast and the ECAPed alloys by tracking their respective anodizing current quota. The optimum coatings of both alloys were obtained after anodization for 30 min. The ECAPed alloy attained a thicker, more compact, and more uniform coating. Energetic crystal defects in the fine Al grains of the ECAPed substrate promote the anodizing reaction and lead to the thicker coating. Fragmented and uniformly distributed fine Si particles in the ECAPed alloy effectively suppress the coating cracks, enhancing the compactness of the coating. Overall, the ECAP-coated sample exhibits the best anticorrosion performance, which is evidenced by the concurrently enhanced prevention of coating and improved corrosion resistance of the substrate.

Naturally exposed rusted rebar has been widely used for the production of reinforced concrete. However, rusted rebar is prone to corrosion under chloride ion (Cl−) contamination and/or at a low alkalinity of concrete. This study employed two surface modification methods, sand blasting and wire brushing, to augment the corrosion resistance of naturally exposed rusted rebar. Electrochemical tests revealed that the surface-modified rebar displayed a significant improvement of passivation in the concrete alkaline environment and anticorrosion performance in both the Cl− free and Cl−-containing simulated concrete pore solutions of different alkalinity. The enhanced performance was mainly due to the elimination of the rust layer and the direct exposure of the fresh metallic surface to the alkaline medium. Moreover, the effect of surface nanograins on the intensified passive film led to the best passivation performance of the wire-brushed rebar. The overall findings demonstrate that the two developed methods were conducive to the passivation and anticorrosion performance of the rusted rebar and thereby hold great promise for improving the service life of the reinforced concrete structures.

In this study, a high-strength Mg-9Li alloy was developed via multi-pass equal-channel-angular-pressing (ECAP) and post rolling, of which the yield tensile stress (YTS) and ultimate tensile stress (UTS) were 166 MPa and 174 MPa representing about 219% and 70% increase in YTS and UTS respectively, compared to the cast alloy. The cast alloy was ECAP processed at 200 °C for 4, 8, and 16 passes, followed by room-temperature rolling to a total thickness reduction of 50%. The 8-passes ECAPed (E8) alloy presented the best strength of all the ECAPed alloys, and the post rolling endowed the alloy (E8R) further strengthening and the best strength of all the alloys. Grain-boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening were the two major factors for the high strength of the processed alloys. The α-Mg phase grains were greatly refined to about 2 μm after 8-passes ECAP, and was further refined to about 800 nm ~1.5 μm after rolling. Significant grain refinement endowed the alloy with sufficient grain-boundary strengthening. Profuse intragranular dislocation accumulated in the deformed matrix, leading to the significant dislocation hardening of the alloy. Rolling-induced strong basal texture of the α-Mg phase also enhanced the further strengthening of the E8R alloy.

Cast Mg-9Li alloy was successfully solid-solution (SS) treated via heating at 575 °C for 4.5 h and rapidly quenched with ice-water mixture. The mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the SS alloy were simultaneously improved. Rapid bcc/hcp phase transition of the alloy occurred during the quenching process, creating the newly precipitated needle-like fine α-Mg phase, uniformly distributed in the β-Li phase matrix. Dramatic grain refinement and uniform distribution of the α-Mg phase, as well as the massively increased α/β phase interfaces, are factors leading to the improved mechanical property of the SS alloy. Meanwhile, due to the modified duplex-phase structure, the SS alloy has a uniform corrosion-resistant surface film on the β-Li phase, which completely covers the entire alloy surface and efficiently protects the substrate. In addition, the SS alloy has fewer difference in the elements concentration and corrosion activity of the duplex phases, which reduces the pitting sensitivity and improves the corrosion resistance of the alloy matrix. The findings in this binary Mg-Li alloy can also serve as a benchmark for other more practical and complicated Mg-Li alloys.

Tailoring the morphology and distribution of the Al2Ca second phase is important for improving mechanical properties of Al2Ca-containing Mg-Al-Ca based alloys. This work employed the industrial-scale multi-pass rotary-die equal channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) on an as-cast Mg-3.7Al-1.8Ca-0.4Mn (wt %) alloy and investigated its microstructure evolution and mechanical properties under three different processing parameters. The obtained results showed that RD-ECAP was effective for refining the microstructure and breaking the network-shaped Al2Ca phase. With the increase of the ECAP number and decrease of the processing temperature, the average sizes of Al2Ca particles decreased obviously, and the dispersion of the Al2Ca phase became more uniform. In addition, more ECAP passes and lower processing temperature resulted in finer α-Mg grains. Tensile test results indicated that the 573 K-12p alloy with the finest and most dispersed Al2Ca particles exhibited superior mechanical properties with tensile yield strength of 304 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 354 MPa and elongation of 10.3%. The improved comprehensive mechanical performance could be attributed to refined DRX grains, nano-sized Mg17Al12 precipitates and dispersed Al2Ca particles, where the refined and dispersed Al2Ca particles played a more dominant role in strengthening the alloys.

Mechanical properties usually take precedence for wrought magnesium alloy when it would be used as a structure material. This paper proposed an approach that achieved high strength in AZ91 Mg alloy. The main procedure combined solution heat treatment, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), and the subsequent low temperature rolling. After solution heat treatment and ECAP, the alloy had fine grains and excellent ductility, which benefited the following rolling at low temperature. By the following rolling (at 150 °C), the strength was further increased to ~432 MPa with a moderate ductility. This approach was proved effective in refining the grains and accumulating dislocations. The ultrahigh strength was attributed to the high density of dislocations and fine structure. The uniformly distributed fine precipitates also supplied precipitate hardening. Recrystallization that happened during rolling and annealing was the main reason for the moderate ductility.

Closed-cell AlCu5Mn alloy foam with porosity range of ~45–90% were fabricated by the melt-foaming route. The pore structure of the fabricated Al alloy foam was analyzed and the coupling effect of porosity and cell size on the quasi-static compression behavior of the foam was investigated. The results show that the cell size of the foam decreases with the porosity decline from the view of the contribution rate to the porosity and the hierarchical pore structure characteristics becomes obvious when the foam porosity is low; the compression stress–strain curves of the foams with high porosity (>74%) are serrated due to the large cell size being easy to deform and more strain needed to let the stress recover. In this study, we report on a low-temperature sintered enamel coating with a high-strength bonding and wear-resistance that protected a grey cast iron substrate. The SiO2⁻Al2O3⁻B2O3 composited prescription for the enamel coating was modified by the partial substitutions of SiO2 for B2O3 and alkali metals for Li2O. The optimized enamel coating was prepared by sintering at a relatively low temperature (730 °C) for seven minutes. Due to the composition of both the amorphous and crystalline phases, the enamel coating presented sufficient hardness and excellent wear resistance. The wear volume loss and the specific wear rate of the enamel coating were obviously lower than that of the metal substrate. The enamel coating can effectively improve the service life of the grey cast iron substrate in a complex frictional environment.

Metallic nanowires usually exhibit ultrahigh strength but low tensile ductility, owing to their limited strain hardening capability. Here, our larger scale molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that we could rebuild the highly desirable strain hardening behavior at a large strain (0.21 to 0.31) in twinned Au nanowires by changing twin orientation, which strongly contrasts with the strain hardening at the incipient plastic deformation in low stacking-fault energy metals nanowires. Because of this strain hardening, an improved ductility is achieved. With the change of twin orientation, a competing effect between partial dislocation propagation and twin migration is observed in nanowires with slant twin boundaries. When twin migration gains the upper hand, the strain hardening occurs. Otherwise, the strain softening occurs. As the twin orientation increases from 0° to 90°, the dominating deformation mechanism shifts from slip-twin boundary interaction to dislocation slip, twin migration, and slip transmission in sequence. Our work could not only deepen our understanding of the mechanical behavior and deformation mechanism of twinned Au nanowires, but also provide new insights into enhancing the strength and ductility of nanowires by engineering the nanoscale twins.

Surface nano-crystallization (SNC) of a conform-extruded Cu-0.4 wt.% Mg alloy was successfully conducted by high-speed rotating wire-brushing to obtain the deformed zone with dislocation cells and nanocrystallines. SNC promotes the anodic dissolution and corrosion rate of the Cu-Mg alloy in the initial stage of immersion corrosion in 0.1 M NaCl solution. The weakened corrosion resistance is mainly attributed to the higher corrosion activity of SNC-treated alloy. With extending the immersion time, the SNC-treated alloy slows the corrosion rate dramatically and exhibits uniform dissolution of the surface. The formation of the dense corrosion products leads to the improvement of overall corrosion performance. It indicates that the SNC-treated Cu-Mg alloy can function reliably for a longer duration in a corrosive environment.

Relatively low compactness and unsatisfactory uniformity of reinforced particles severely restrict the performance and widespread industry applications of the powder metallurgy (PM) metal matrix composites (MMCs). Here, we developed a combined processing route of PM and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) to enhance the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the SiCp/Al-Si composite. The results indicate that ECAP significantly refined the matrix grains, eliminated pores and promoted the uniformity of the reinforcement particles. After 8p-ECAP, the SiCp/Al-Si composite consisted of ultrafine Al matrix grains (600 nm) modified by uniformly-dispersed Si and SiCp particles, and the composite relative density approached 100%. The hardness and wear resistance of the 8p-ECAP SiCp/Al-Si composite were markedly improved compared to the PM composite. More ECAP passes continued a trend of improvement for the wear resistance and hardness. Moreover, while abrasion and delamination dominated the wear of PM composites, less severe adhesive wear and fatigue mechanisms played more important roles in the wear of PM-ECAP composites. This study demonstrates a new approach to designing wear-resistant Al-MMCs and is readily applicable to other Al-MMCs.

Developing cost-effective magnesium alloys with high strength and good ductility is a long-standing challenge for lightweight metals. Here we present a multimodal grain structured AZ91 Mg alloy with both high strength and good ductility, prepared through a combined processing route of low-pass ECAP with short-time aging. This multimodal grain structure consisted of coarse grains and fine grains modified by heterogeneous precipitates, which resulted from incomplete dynamic recrystallization. This novel microstructure manifested in both superior high strength (tensile strength of 360 MPa) and good ductility (elongation of 21.2%). The high strength was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of grain refinement, back-stress strengthening, and precipitation strengthening. The favorable ductility, meanwhile, was ascribed to the grain refinement and multimodal grain structure. We believe that our microstructure control strategy could be applicable to magnesium alloys which exhibit obvious precipitation strengthening potential.

Developing high strength and high ductility magnesium alloys is an important issue for weight-reduction applications. In this work, we explored the feasibility of manipulating nanosized precipitates on LPSO-contained (long period stacking ordered phase) ultra-fine grained (UFG) magnesium alloy to obtain simultaneously improved strength and ductility. The effect of two aging treatments on microstructures and mechanical properties of an UFG Mg-10Y-6Gd-1.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy was systematically investigated and compared by a series of microstructure characterization techniques and tensile test. The results showed that nano γ’’ precipitates were successfully introduced in T5 peak aged alloy with no obvious increase in grain size. While T6 peak aging treatment stimulated the growth of α-Mg grains to 4.3 μm (fine grained, FG), together with the precipitation of γ’’ precipitates. Tensile tests revealed that both aging treatments remarkably improved the strengths but impaired the ductility slightly. The T5 peak aged alloy exhibited the optimum mechanical properties with ultimate strength of 431 MPa and elongation of 13.5%. This work provided a novel strategy to simultaneously improve the strength and ductility of magnesium alloys by integrating the intense precipitation strengthening with ductile LPSO-contained UFG/FG microstructure.

Microstructure evolutions and mechanical properties of a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti, grade 2) during multi-pass rotary-die equal-channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) and cold rolling (CR) were systematically investigated in this work, to achieve comprehensive property for faster industrial applications. The obtained results showed that the grain size of CP-Ti decreased from 80 μm of as-received stage to 500 nm and 310 nm after four passes and eight passes of ECAP, respectively. Moreover, abundant dislocations were observed in ECAP samples. After subsequent cold rolling, the grain size of ECAPed CP-Ti was further refined to 120 nm and 90 nm, suggesting a good refining effect by combination of ECAP and CR. XRD (X-ray diffractometer) analysis and TEM (transmission electron microscope) observations indicated that the dislocation density increased remarkably after subsequent CR processing. Room temperature tensile tests showed that CP-Ti after ECAP + CR exhibited the best combination of strength and ductility, with ultimate tensile strength and fracture strain reaching 920 MPa and 20%. The high strength of this deformed CP-Ti originated mainly from refined grains and high density of dislocations, while the good ductility could be attributed to the improved homogeneity of UFG (ultra-fine grained) microstructure. Thus, a high strength and ductility ultra-fine grained CP-Ti was successfully prepared via ECAP plus CR.

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to demonstrate the synergistic effects of the extrinsic size (nanowire length) and intrinsic size (twin boundary spacing) on the failure manner, yield strength, ductility and deformation mechanism of the twinned nanowires containing high density coherent twin boundaries CTBs paralleled to the nanowires’ axis. The twinned nanowires show an intense extrinsic size effect, i.e., shorter is stronger and more ductile, and an intense intrinsic size effect, i.e., thinner is stronger. Notably, the strengthening effect degradation of CTBs in the twinned nanowires is observed with an increase in nanowire length: remarkable strengthening effect can be obtained for the short nanowires, but the strengthening effect becomes less pronounced for the long nanowires. The twinned nanowires fail via a ductile manner or via a brittle manner depending on the synergistic effect of the nanowire length and twin boundary spacing. By atomic-level observation of the plastic deformation, we found that the emission of a trailing 30° partial from the free surface controls the yield behavior of the twinned nanowires. We also found that the special zigzag extended dislocations are formed by the dislocation–CTBs interactions, and propagate to sustain the plastic deformation.

In this work, the microstructural evolutions and mechanical properties of an as-cast Mg-10Gd-4Y-1.5Zn-0.5Zr (wt %) alloy during successive multi-pass equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were systematically investigated by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and compression test. The obtained results show that the microstructure of as-cast alloy consists of α-Mg grains, Mg3Gd island phase, few Y-rich particles, and lamellar 14H LPSO (long period stacking ordered) phase located at the grain boundaries. During ECAP, the Mg3Gd-type phase is crushed and refined gradually. However, the refined Mg3Gd particles are not distributed uniformly in the matrix, but still aggregated at the interdendritic area. The 14H phase becomes kinked during the early passes of ECAP and then broken at the kinking bands with more severe deformation. Dynamic recrystallization of α-Mg is activated during ECAP, and their average diameter decreases to around 1 μm, which is stabilized in spite of increasing ECAP passes. Moreover, nano-scale γ′ phases were dynamically precipitated in 16p ECAP alloy. Compression tests indicate that 16p ECAP alloy exhibits excellent mechanical property with compressive strength of 548 MPa and fracture strain of 19.1%. The significant improvement for both strength and ductility of deformed alloy could be ascribed to dynamic recrystallization (DRX) grains, refined Mg3Gd-type and 14H particles, and dynamically precipitated γ′ plates.

Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) comprises a group of disorders characterized by recurrent bouts of systemic inflammation related to overactivation of inflammasome. So far, neither large cases of the correlation between genotype and phenotype nor treatment strategies have been clearly stated in China. Here, we studied the clinical and genetic characteristics and their correlation from 30 CAPS patients in China. We identified the pathogenesis for novel mutations by activating NLRP3 inflammasome for peripheral cells with ATP plus LPS, compared characteristics with other case series, and analyzed treatment outcomes of these patients. The patients harbored 19 substitutions in NLRP3, and 8 of them were novel mutations. Among these novel mutations, percentages of severe musculoskeletal, ophthalmologic, and neurological symptoms were higher compared with other case serials. The correlation of phenotypes and their variants seemed different in our cases, such as T350M, S333G/I/R, and F311V (somatic mosaicism). Ten patients received Canakinumab treatment, which proved effective at alleviating musculoskeletal, neurological, auditory, visual manifestations, fever, and rash for 10-20 months follow-up. Patients treated with prednisolone or prednisolone plus thalidomide or methotrexate, tocilizumab, TNF inhibiting agents, and sirolimus achieved only partial remission. Importantly, we firstly identified somatic mosaicism mutation of F311V, which was severe. Our study extended the spectrum of genotype and phenotype and characteristics of their correlations and provided detailed responses to different treatment strategies.
