Societal Impact Statement Increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition represents a major global change factor, but its long-term effect on tree growth and carbon (C) sequestration remains uncertain. Our manipulation experiment and meta-analysis reveal that N deposition in temperate and boreal forests promoted tree growth and the allocation of more C into wood than into leaves in China and worldwide. Thus, N deposition may increase forest C sequestration through enhanced wood production and distribution of C into stable sinks. In the context of achieving "Carbon Neutrality," understanding how N deposition affect long-term forest C sinks will help us with mitigation strategies under climate change. Increased nitrogen (N) deposition is driving many temperate and boreal forests in the Northern Hemisphere towards N saturation. However, it is uncertain how long-term N deposition affects tree growth and carbon (C) allocation in these forests. To investigate this, we treated temperate larch and mixed forests in northeastern China with N additions for 8 years. In addition, we collected data from 25 N-addition experiments in temperate and boreal forests worldwide to reveal the overall effects of N on tree growth and C allocation. Nitrogen additions significantly promoted total biomass increment by 24% in both study forests, with on average additional 8 kg C per kg N gain into woody biomass over the study period. Nitrogen additions increased the ratio of woody biomass increment to foliage litterfall production in the larch forest (by 34%). Literature data analysis also revealed greater N promotion on wood (24%) over foliage (9%) production. However, the positive effect on foliage diminished over time. These results combined imply that N deposition may promote tree growth in temperate and boreal regions and drive proportionally more photosynthate allocation into wood than leaves, thus may enhance forest C sequestration in the long run.

Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms of environmental factors on seed dormancy and germination will provide guidance for tree regeneration. Toward understanding the coupled effect of light and temperature on dormancy release and germination of Pinus koraiensis seeds, we set up three light conditions (L200: 200 μmol m−2 s−1, L20: 20 μmol m−2 s−1, L0: 0 μ m−2 s−1) and four storage temperatures [T-5: − 5 °C (50 days), T5: − 5 °C (50 days) + 5 °C (50 days), T25: − 5 °C(50 days) + 5 °C (50 days) + 25 °C (50 days), T15: − 5 °C (50 days) + 5 °C (50 days) + 25 °C (50 days) + 15 °C (50 days)] using imbibed seeds, then quantified phytohormones gibberellic acid (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) during the stratification. Germination percentage (GP), mean germination time (TM), and germination value (GV) under 25/15 °C temperature and the three light conditions were then determined. Phytohormone levels and germination performances were significantly affected by light and temperature. No consistent trend was found between the phytohormone levels and GP caused by light levels. Under the three light conditions, ABA concentrations in the embryo and endosperm decreased as storage temperature shifted from T-5 to T25 and increased from T25 to T15; GA3 decreased in nearly all four storage temperatures. GP reached 40–60% in T25 storage without light irradiance. In the three light conditions, GP and GV were higher at T5 and T25 than at T-5 and T15; so T5 and T25 are considered as optimum storage temperatures for dormancy release and germination. At optimum temperatures, light (L200, L20) significantly increased the GP and GV compared with the dark (L0). At L200 and L20, significant negative correlations between GV and the ABA concentrations and positive correlations between GV and GA/ABA in the seed embryo were found. Temperature played a more important role in primary dormancy release and germination; light was unnecessary for primary dormancy release. Light facilitated seed germination at optimum temperatures. The dormancy release and germination of P. koraiensis seeds were controlled by a decrease in ABA concentrations or an increase in GA/ABA induced by temperature variations.

Mongolian pine transpiration was driven by soil water at the top and vapor pressure deficit at the bottom of sand dunes; this was modulated by interannual variability in water availability. Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) plantations have been suffering frequent diebacks in years of extreme drought due to water deficit in semiarid sandy regions of Northeast China. However, the transpiration dynamics of Mongolian pine trees at different positions of sand dunes and their responses to environmental variables remain unknown. Here, canopy transpiration and conductance of 38-year-old Mongolian pine trees at top (TS) and bottom (BS) of sand dunes were quantified using sap flow method from 2018 to 2019. Canopy transpiration per unit leaf area (EL) was, respectively, 0.45 ± 0.13 and 0.53 ± 0.17 mm d−1 at TS and BS in 2018, with relatively low soil moisture, and it was, respectively, 0.51 ± 0.15 and 0.59 ± 0.19 mm d−1 in 2019, with relatively high soil moisture. Moreover, EL variability explained by climate variables was greater at BS than at TS during 2018, but the trend was reversed during 2019. In addition, canopy conductance at BS was 11.5% higher than that at TS, but magnitude of increase from 2018 to 2019 was higher at TS. Stomatal sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit was higher at BS than at TS in 2018, but comparable in 2019. Consistently, stomatal sensitivity to soil moisture was higher at TS than at BS in 2018, but the trend was reversed in 2019. Taken together, these findings indicate that Mongolian pine trees at TS exhibit lower transpiration, which is primarily driven by soil moisture, than those at BS, presenting greater susceptibility to dieback under extreme drought.

Ecosystem CO2–H2O data measured by infrared gas analyzers in open-path eddy-covariance (OPEC) systems have numerous applications, such as estimations of CO2 and H2O fluxes in the atmospheric boundary layer. To assess the applicability of the data for these estimations, data uncertainties from analyzer measurements are needed. The uncertainties are sourced from the analyzers in zero drift, gain drift, cross-sensitivity, and precision variability. These four uncertainty sources are individually specified for analyzer performance, but so far no methodology exists yet to combine these individual sources into a composite uncertainty for the specification of an overall accuracy, which is ultimately needed. Using the methodology for closed-path eddy-covariance systems, this overall accuracy for OPEC systems is determined from all individual uncertainties via an accuracy model and further formulated into CO2 and H2O accuracy equations. Based on atmospheric physics and the biological environment, for EC150 infrared CO2–H2O analyzers, these equations are used to evaluate CO2 accuracy (±1.22 mgCO2 m−3, relatively ±0.19 %) and H2O accuracy (±0.10 gH2O m−3, relatively ±0.18 % in saturated air at 35 ∘C and 101.325 kPa). Both accuracies are applied to conceptual models addressing their roles in uncertainty analyses for CO2 and H2O fluxes. For the high-frequency air temperature derived from H2O density along with sonic temperature and atmospheric pressure, the role of H2O accuracy in its uncertainty is similarly addressed. Among the four uncertainty sources, cross-sensitivity and precision variability are minor, although unavoidable, uncertainties, whereas zero drift and gain drift are major uncertainties but are minimizable via corresponding zero and span procedures during field maintenance. The accuracy equations provide rationales to assess and guide the procedures. For the atmospheric background CO2 concentration, CO2 zero and CO2 span procedures can narrow the CO2 accuracy range by 40 %, from ±1.22 to ±0.72 mgCO2 m−3. In hot and humid weather, H2O gain drift potentially adds more to the H2O measurement uncertainty, which requires more attention. If H2O zero and H2O span procedures can be performed practically from 5 to 35 ∘C, the H2O accuracy can be improved by at least 30 %: from ±0.10 to ±0.07 gH2O m−3. Under freezing conditions, the H2O span procedure is impractical but can be neglected because of its trivial contributions to the overall uncertainty. However, the zero procedure for H2O, along with CO2, is imperative as an operational and efficient option under these conditions to minimize H2O measurement uncertainty.

Research has indicated that introducing Aralia elata into larch plantations forms an agroforestry system which could provide economic benefits for local farmers and improve degraded soils. However, the impact of litter mixtures on soil chemical and microbial properties in this agroforestry system are unclear, which limits efficient management of the agroforestry system. A 365-d incubation experiment examined the effect of litter mixtures of different proportions of larch (L) and A. elata (A) on soil chemical and microbial properties. The results show that levels of mineral N, available P, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, cumulative C mineralization, and activities of hydrolases and oxidases increased with an increase of A. elata in the litter mixtures. Concentration of total soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous did not change (except for total nitrogen). Compared with larch litter alone, levels of mineral N, available P, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, cumulative C mineralization, and the activities of hydrolases and oxidases increased by 7.6–433.5%. Most chemical and microbial properties were positively correlated with mixed litter proportions and the initial levels of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu in the litter, while negatively correlated with the initial concentrations of C, Fe and lignin, C/N and lignin/N ratios. The results indicate that A. elata litter can improve degraded larch soil and the degree depends on the proportion of A. elata litter in the litter mixtures.

Key message The accuracy of gap age estimation can be improved from 5–6 to 2 years by analyzing the annual width and carbon isotope discrimination of the rings of gap-surrounding trees. Context Gap age has a direct link to the composition and structure of regeneration. However, the accuracy of gap age estimation is still limited. Aim We aim to improve the accuracy of gap age estimation by analyzing the width in combination with carbon isotope discrimination (∆13C) of the rings of gap-surrounding trees. Methods Twenty-four gap-surrounding trees (nine Ulmus laciniata, eight Fraxinus rhynchophylla, and seven Juglans mandshurica) were selected from eight artificial gaps created in December 2004. First, the growth release (i.e., peak time of percent growth change) for sample trees was measured based on the tree-ring width to identify the rough time range of gap formation. Then, the ∆13C of rings during the time range were analyzed for determining the precise year of gap formation. Results The peak time of percent growth change occurred from 2005 to 2010 for U. laciniata, 2004 to 2008 for F. rhynchophylla, and 2002 to 2007 for J. mandshurica. Within the range of 2002 to 2010, the ∆13C of rings for all sample trees significantly reduced in 2005–2006 (p < 0.05), which was the estimated year of gap formation. Conclusion The introduction of ∆13C analysis could effectively reduce the estimating deviations of gap age by only considering tree-ring width analyses and finally improve the accuracy of gap age estimation within 2 years, which can provide reliable information for gap management.

Understanding the natural regeneration of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.) in mixed broadleaved–Korean pine (MBK) forests is crucial for MBK forest conservation and secondary deciduous broadleaved forest restoration. We hypothesized the ratio of Korean pine basal area (RKp) in MBK stands affected its natural regeneration. Regeneration censuses, including the height, root collar diameter, age, and growth stages (younger seedling, older seedling, smaller sapling, and taller sapling) of Korean pine, were conducted in northeast China. Results indicated the stem density and age composition of younger seedlings were positively correlated with RKp, whereas those of the saplings were negatively correlated with RKp. A protective forest, including shelterbelt, windbreak, and shelter forest as its synonyms, is characterized by the protective functions of various forest types distributed or planted on ecologically fragile areas or nearby the objects that need to be protected using the ecological effects of forests. Ecological mechanisms for management practices of protective forests is one of the disciplinary orientations in forest ecology and management. Most protective forest studies are dependent on forestry eco-engineering, such as the Great Plains Shelterbelt Project in the United States, the Great Plan for the Transformation of Nature in the Soviet Union, and the Three-North Afforestation Program in China. The development of sustainable management of protective forests has been given increasing attention by governments, scientists, and media due to their impacts on environment conservation and global change. We introduce forestry eco-engineering and provide a review of their main ecological mechanisms for management practices of protective forests. Ecological mechanisms for management systems currently applied are emphasized, i.e., the theory of protection maturity and phase-directional management; the relationship between structure and protective functions and structural optimization measures; and, the decline mechanism and ecological restoration strategies. In addition, several unresolved problems in management practices of protective forests are discussed as well as the prospects for ecological mechanisms for management practices of protective forests in the future, which include: (1) theories and technologies for management practices of protective forests at the landscape or regional scale; (2) the decline mechanisms and corresponding ecological restoration approaches across multiple scales; and, (3) the comprehensive assessment of forestry eco-engineering at large-scales based on ecosystem principles.

Nitrification is a crucial step in ecosystem nitrogen (N) cycling, but scaling up from plot-based measurements of gross nitrification to catchments is difficult. Here, we employed a newly developed method in which the oxygen isotope anomaly (Δ17O) of nitrate (NO3-) is used as a natural tracer to quantify in situ catchment-scale gross nitrification rate (GNR) for a temperate forest from 2014 to 2017 in northeastern China. The annual GNR ranged from 71 to 120 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (average 94 ± 10 kg N ha-1 yr-1) over the 4 years in this forest. This result and high stream NO3- loss (4.2-8.9 kg N ha-1 yr-1) suggest that the forested catchment may have been N-saturated. At the catchment scale, the total N output of 10.7 kg N ha-1 yr-1, via leaching and gaseous losses, accounts for 56% of the N input from bulk precipitation (19.2 kg N ha-1 yr-1). This result indicates that the forested catchment is still retaining a large fraction of N from atmospheric deposition. Our study suggests that estimating in situ catchment-scale GNR over several years when combined with other conventional flux estimates can facilitate the understanding of N biogeochemical cycling and changes in the ecosystem N status.

How forest ecosystems respond to climate warming will determine forest trajectories over the next 100 years. However, the potential effects of elevated temperature on forests remain unclear, primarily because of the absence of long-term and large-size field warming experiments in forests, especially in Asia. Here, we present the design and performance of an ecosystem-scale warming experiment using infrared (IR) heater arrays in a 60-year-old temperate mixed forest at Qingyuan Forest CERN in northeastern China. In paired 108 m2 plots (n = 3), the surface soils were constantly elevated 2°C above control plots with a feedback control system over 4 years (2018–2021). Subsoils down to 60 cm depth were warmed 1.2–2°C. Soil warming did not significantly affect soil moisture either in surface soils or in subsoils. Turn-off time due to weather extremes (heavy rains, snow) and power outages only accounted for 2.5% of the total warming period. In conclusion, we provide a proof-of-principle setup that allows long-term analysis of forest response to warming temperatures in large-size field plots. Importantly, our warming experiment demonstrated the feasibility of IR heater arrays for soil warming in tall-statured forest ecosystems.

Field CO2/H2O measurements from infrared gas analyzers in closed‐path eddy‐covariance systems have wide applications in earth sciences. Knowledge about exactness of these measurements is required to assess measurement applicability. Although the analyzers are specified with uncertainty components (zero drift, gain drift, cross‐sensitivities, and precision), exactness for individual measurements is unavailable due to an absence of methodology to comprehend the components as an overall uncertainty. Adopting an advanced definition of accuracy as a range of all measurement uncertainty sources, the specified components are composited into a model formulated for studying analyzers’ CO2/H2O accuracy equations. Based on atmospheric physics and environmental parameters, the analyzers are evaluated using the equations for CO2 accuracy (±0.78 µmolCO2 mol−1, relatively ±0.18%) and H2O accuracy (±0.15 mmolH2O mol−1). Evaluation shows that precision and cross‐sensitivity are minor uncertainties while zero and gain drifts are major uncertainties. Both drifts need adjusting through zero/span procedures during field maintenance. The equations provide rationales to guide and assess the procedures. H2O span needs more attentions under humid conditions. Under freezing conditions while H2O span is impractical, this span is fortunately unnecessary. Under the same conditions, H2O zero drift dominates H2O measurement uncertainty. Therefore, automatic zero becomes a more applicable and necessary tactic. In general cases of atmospheric CO2 background, automatic CO2 zero/span procedures can narrow CO2 accuracy by 36% (±0.74 to ± 0.47 µmolCO2 mol−1). Automatic/manual H2O zero/span procedures can narrow H2O accuracy by 27% (±0.15 to ±0.11 mmolH2O mol−1). While ensuring system specifications, the procedures guided by equations improve measurement accuracies.

Primary dormancy of seeds of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.) after dispersal in the autumn and the induction of secondary dormancy the first summer following seed dispersal limit the regeneration of mixed broadleaved Korean pine forests in Northeast China. This study was to determine how changes in the levels of abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellic acid (GA) maintain primary and secondary dormancy of Korean pine seeds under germination conditions. We transferred seeds with one of five primary dormancy states or three secondary dormancy states to germination conditions and measured changes in the levels of ABA, GA1+3 (GA1 and GA3) and GA4+7 (GA4 and GA7) in the seed coat, megagametophyte and embryo during incubation. Seed coat ABA levels in primary dormant seeds (PDS) and ABA levels in various parts of secondary dormant seeds (SDS) gradually declined during incubation but were still higher than in seeds for which dormancy was progressively released. GA4+7 and GA1+3 levels in embryos greatly decreased 35% and 24%, respectively, during incubation of SDS, and thus, the ratio of ABA to GA4+7 in embryos and megagametophytes significantly increased. The ratio of ABA to GA1+3 in various parts of SDS increased slightly during incubation. In contrast, in seeds for which secondary dormancy was already released, GA4+7 and GA1+3 levels in the embryo, GA4+7/ABA ratio in the embryo and seed coat, and the GA1+3/ABA in the embryo and megagametophyte significantly increased during incubation. There was no trend in the changes in the levels of ABA, GA4+7 or GA1+3 in embryos and megagametophytes of PDS or the levels of GA4+7 or GA1+3 in megagametophytes of SDS during incubation. The results suggest that high ABA levels in the seed coat maintain primary dormancy of Korean pine seeds. Maintenance of secondary dormancy involves a reduction of GA4+7, GA1+3, GA4+7/ABA, and GA1+3/ABA and the retention of high ABA levels.

Monoculture practices in plantation forests reduce biodiversity and soil fertility compared with the adjacent patches of primary or secondary forests. Thus, it is urgent to convert monocultures into mixed stands to resolve those problems. In Northeast China, pure larch (Larix spp., mainly including L. olgensis, L. gmelinii, and L. kaempferi) plantations (LPs) are widely converted into mixed larch-walnut stands by introducing Juglans mandshurica (a native and light-demanding broadleaved tree species in secondary forests) into the LPs. However, the success of the natural regeneration of J. mandshurica must rely on rodent-mediated seed dispersal away from parental trees, and the dispersal processes are largely influenced by microhabitat changes during the thinning management of plantations. A field trial was conducted by releasing tagged J. mandshurica seeds in LPs with three thinning intensities (0%, 25%, and 50% thinning intensities) during two continuous growing seasons. The results indicated that among the three thinning treatments, the removal rate of seeds by rodents was the fastest, and the scatter-hoard seed (6.3 m) was most plentiful, in the 25% thinning intensity of LPs. On the contrary, the seed dispersal rate was the slowest, and the seed dispersal distance (8.3 m) was the farthest, in the stand with 50% thinning intensity in the non-mast year of 2015. This finding may be because both the changes in canopy openness and variations in microhabitats (including light incidence, soil moisture, and coverage of understory shrubs and herbs) caused by different thinning intensities have a synergetic effect on rodent-mediated seed dispersal. Inter-annual variation in seed production resulted in faster removal rates with larger cache proportion in LPs (25.93%) and shorter dispersal distance (6.4 m) in the non-mast year (2015) and vice versa in the mast year (2016). Thinning is a potentially feasible practice to promote rodent-mediated seed dispersal and the potential seed germination of J. mandshurica in LPs. We could take varying measures for different silviculture objectives to make full use of the thinning advantage in rodent-mediated seed dispersal; for instance, 25% thinning intensity (437–532 trees ha−1) provided a suitable microhabitat for rodents to disperse walnut seeds into LPs faster, and 50% thinning intensity (292–355 trees ha−1) is suggested in LPs to promote rodents to cache seeds with longer distance.

Forest gaps are important small-scale disturbances that initiate forest succession. However, natural regeneration patterns within gaps remain unclear, especially in temperate secondary forests. In this study, three-dimensional graphic systems were established to show the whole regeneration patterns of woody species with different shade tolerance in natural gaps. Furthermore, all gaps were classified into three size classes, and each gap was divided into two parts, canopy gaps (CGs) and gap peripheries (GPs). A total of 34 woody species were found in the 41 surveyed gaps, but almost no tree species had a high importance value index (≥ 0.100). Total plant density decreased from the small gaps to the large gaps, showing a density trend similar to that of shade-tolerant species. Total species richness peaked in the medium gaps, which indicated that medium gaps could provide moderate environments for most woody species. Both the species richness and plant density of shade-tolerant species were lower in CGs than in GPs, regardless of gap sizes. In contrast, both the species richness and plant density of shade-intolerant species were higher in CGs than in GPs. Interestingly, intermediate shade-tolerant species exhibited a “doughnut” regeneration pattern in the large gaps, which indicated that they could neither compete with shade-intolerant species in CGs nor invade GPs occupied by shade-tolerant species. Our findings suggest that gap formation could benefit woody species regeneration, but subsequent treatments based on gap silviculture are needed to eliminate low-value species and manage target tree species, which would help accelerate the restoration of secondary forests.

The conversion of secondary forests to pure coniferous plantations leads to a decrease in soil quality partly because of the slow decomposition rate of coniferous litter. Microbial decomposers directly regulate the decomposition process. However, little is known about how litter type and microbial communities including both bacteria and fungi interact to affect decomposition rates. A field experiment was performed consisting of seven treatments (i.e., four tree litters: Quercus mongolica, Juglans mandshurica, Acer mono, and Larix gmelinii) in which either monospecific litters or mixtures of larch litter with each broadleaved tree litter (mass ratio was 1:1) were placed into litterbags, and the microbial community composition and enzyme activities were measured. The results showed that in monospecific litters, the highest mass loss was observed in Acer litter, followed by Quercus, Juglans, and Larix litters. Furthermore, synergistic non-additive mixture effects were found in the Larix-Acer and Larix-Quercus mixtures. Most of the abundant bacterial taxa and potential functional genes encoding the hydrolytic enzymes were not significantly affected by the litter type. In contrast, each litter type was characterized by a specific fungal community, as well as different patterns of extracellular enzyme activity. The most abundant fungal decomposers in Larix litter during the first 540 days of decomposition, such as Meria, Lambertella, Venturia, and Ochroconis, were negatively correlated with most of the enzymatic activities, which possibly explains the slower decomposition rate of Larix litter. In conclusion, mixing Larix litter with broadleaved litters could change the microbial community composition, and accelerate the decomposition of hemicelluloses and lignin. Introducing broadleaved tree species with fast litter turnover rates by allowing natural regeneration and planting broadleaved tree species in pure larch plantations may be an effective way to restore soil quality in temperate forest regions.

Increased intrinsic water use efficiency enhances tree growth of native species, but not that of non-native species under warming and drying climates in Northeast China. Climate change significantly affects forest ecosystems. However, little is known about whether non-native and native tree species show similar responses to global warming. We found different trends in the basal area increment (BAI) and tree-ring stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of two non-native (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica and Populus × xiaozhuanica) and two native (Pinus tabuliformis and Ulmus pumila) tree species during the warming and drying periods from 1985 to 2014. The BAI of non-native tree species was stable, whereas that of the native tree species exhibited a significant increase. A significant increase in tree-ring δ13Ccorr (corrected for atmospheric changes in δ13C) for non-native tree species indicated increasing water stress. The intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE, derived from tree-ring δ13C) of both non-native and native tree species increased significantly. However, the magnitude of the increase in iWUE was higher in non-native tree species than in native tree species, indicating that non-native tree species suffered stronger water stress. Increasing iWUE but no increase in BAI for non-native tree species suggested that water stress reduced stomatal conductance and, consequently, reduced carbon uptake. In contrast, increased iWUE accompanied by an enhanced BAI for native tree species indicated an increase in photosynthetic capacity induced by CO2 fertilization. These findings suggest that non-native tree species would experience greater mortality under extreme drought conditions once water stress passes a physiological threshold. However, native tree species would suffer only slightly due to benefiting from CO2 fertilization.

Air temperar (T) plays a fundamental role in many aspects of the flux exchanges between the atmosphere and ecosystems. Additionally, it is critical to know where (in relation to other essential measurements) and at what frequency T must be measured to accurately describe such exchanges. In closed-path eddy-covariance (CPEC) flux systems, T can be computed from the sonic temperature (Ts) and water vapor mixing ratio that are measured by the fast-response senosrs of three-dimensional sonic anemometer and infrared gas analyzer, respectively. T then is computed by use of either T = Ts (1 + 0.51q)−1, where q is specific humidity, or T = Ts (1 + 0.32e / P)−1, where e is water vapor pressure and P is atmospheric pressure. Converting q and e / P into the same water vapor mixing ratio analytically reveals the difference between these two equations. This difference in a CPEC system could reach ±0.18 K, bringing an uncertainty into the accuracy of T from both equations and raises the question of which equation is better. To clarify the uncertainty and to answer this question, the derivation of T equations in terms of Ts and H2O-related variables is thoroughly studied. The two equations above were developed with approximations. Therefore, neither of their accuracies were evaluated, nor was the question answered. Based on the first principles, this study derives the T equation in terms of Ts and water vapor molar mixing ratio (χH2O) without any assumption and approximation. Thus, this equation itself does not have any error and the accuracy in T from this equation (equation-computed T) depends solely on the measurement accuracies of Ts and χH2O. Based on current specifications for Ts and χH2O in the CPEC300 series and given their maximized measurement uncertainties, the accuracy in equation-computed T is specified within ±1.01 K. This accuracy uncertainty is propagated mainly (±1.00 K) from the uncertainty in Ts measurements and little (±0.03 K) from the uncertainty in χH2O measurements. Apparently, the improvement on measurement technologies particularly for Ts would be a key to narrow this accuracy range. Under normal sensor and weather conditions, the specified accuracy is overestimated and actual accuracy is better. Equation-computed T has frequency response equivalent to high-frequency Ts and is insensitive to solar contamination during measurements. As synchronized at a temporal scale of measurement frequency and matched at a spatial scale of measurement volume with all aerodynamic and thermodynamic variables, this T has its advanced merits in boundary-layer meteorology and applied meteorology.

Background To restore secondary forests (major forest resources worldwide), it is essential to accelerate the natural regeneration of dominant trees by altering micro-environments. Forest gaps are products of various disturbances, ranging from natural storms or wildfires to anthropogenic events like logging and slashing-and-burning, and sprouts of most tree species with non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) storage can regenerate from stumps after gap formation. However, how the stump sprouts with diverse NSCs storages and stump sizes (i.e., diameters) adapt to various micro-environments of within-gap positions remains unclear. Therefore in this study, we monitored the stump sprout regeneration (density, survival, and growth) and NSCs concentrations of three dominant tree species with different shade tolerances and varying stump diameters at five within-gap positions for the first two consecutive years after gap formation. Results Stump diameter was positively correlated with sprout density, growth, and survival of all three tree species, but insignificantly related with sprout NSCs concentrations at the early stage after gap formation. The effect of within-gap position on sprout NSCs concentrations was different among species. After an environmental adaptation of two growing seasons, the north of gap (higher light availability and lower soil moisture habitat) was the least conducive for shade-intolerant Quercus mongolica to accumulate leaf NSCs, and the east of gap (shadier and drier habitat) was conducive to increasing the leaf NSCs concentrations of shade-tolerant Tilia mandshurica. Conclusions Within-gap position significantly affected leaf NSCs concentrations of all three tree species, but most of the sprout growth, survival, and stem NSCs concentrations were independent of the various within-gap positions. Besides stump diameter, the NSCs stored in stump and root systems and the interspecific differences in shade tolerance also contributed more in sprout regeneration at the early stage (2 years) of gap formation. A prolonged monitoring (> 10 years) is needed to further examine the long-term effects of stump diameter and within-gap position on sprout regeneration. All of these findings could be applied to gap-based silviculture by promoting sprout regeneration of dominant tree species with different shade tolerances, which would help accelerate the restoration of temperate secondary forests.
