3. Effect of Rare Earth Element on Microstructure and Properties of in situ Synthesized TiB2/Al Composites

Abstract

The effect of rare earth element Ce, Sc and Er on TiB2 particles and matrix alloy micros-tructure of TiB2/Al composites was studied with in situ synthesis method. It shows that the addition of rare earth element improves the microstructure and properties of TiB2/Al composites notably. The particles of TiB2 are relatively homogenously distributed as adding 0.3% (mass fraction) rare earth element Sc and Er, moreover, it is Er that refines the microstructure of matrix alloy most significantly, then is Sc. Similarly, it is demonstrated that the addition of Sc and Er results in better tensile strength, which is enhanced by 32% and 31%, respectively; the addition of Er also leads to the best ductility by 85% with optimal tensile property. Meanwhile, fracture morphology analysis reveals that the fracture of the composites is microporous gathered ductile fracture when adding Sc and Er. Finally, it is verified that the mechanism of rare earth element on composites lies in two aspects:one is that the addition of rare earth element improves the wettability of the composites and suppresses the agglomeration of TiB2 particles; the other is that the addition of rare earth element refines the microstructure of matrix alloy and then improves the tensile strength of the composites.

Abstract

A new magnetoelectric (ME) sensing combination based on a magnetostrictive Terfenol-D rod and electret membrane has been proposed. AC signal and dc bias magnetic field dependences of the induced ac voltage were investigated using the traditional dynamic ME measurement. The results show that the induced ac voltage is strongly dependent on the applied ac signal and dc bias magnetic field. A significant ME response with high sensitivity and high tunability was obtained, and the optimized ME voltage output with high output power is observed for a zero bias dc magnetic field. The minimum limit of detection and maximum dc bias field tunability are 0.056 mA (or 5.27 $\times \,\,10^{-{7}}$ T) and 98.42%, respectively. In addition, both the induced ac voltage and output power are strongly dependent on the frequency of the driving ac signal magnetic field. A wide working frequency range and high energy conversion efficiency are observed with this combination. These findings not only provide insight into the dynamic measurement of ME response beyond ME materials but also provide a new type of sensing combination, possessing potential application in ME sensors, energy converters, switches, and magnetic detectors.

Abstract

Polycrystalline sample of TbFeO3 has been made by the traditional solid state reaction method. The sample exhibits single phase orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm. The temperature dependences of the dielectric constant and loss tangent at different frequencies have been investigated in detail. Two strong relaxations have been observed in the investigated frequency range. The high- and low-temperature relaxations with activation energies of 0.31 and 0.32 eV may be ascribed to oxygen vacancy and the electrons hopping between Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions, respectively.

Abstract

An iron film percolation system is fabricated by vapour-phase deposition on fracture surfaces of ?-Al2O3 ceramics. The zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) magnetization measurement reveals that the magnetic phase of the film samples evolve from a high-temperature ferromagnetic state to a low-temperature spin-glass-like state, which is also demonstrated by the temperature-dependent ac susceptibility of the iron films. The temperature dependence of the exchange bias field Hc of the iron film exhibits a minimum peak around the temperature T = 5 K, which is independent of the magnitude of the cooling field Hcf. However, for T > 10 K, (1) He is always negative when Hcf = 2kOe and (2) for Hcf = 20kOe (10e?80 A/m), He changes from negative to positive values as T increases. Our experimental results show that the anomalous hysteresis properties mainly result from the oxide surfaces of the films with spin-glass-like phase.

Abstract

The sandwich magnetoelectric (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3/CoFe2O4/(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3films have been fabricated on Ni–5 at.%W RABiTS tape by pulsed laser deposition. The dielectric properties of the films have been investigated. The dielectric tunability of the sandwich films increases initially and then decreases with increasing the bias field. It is suggested that the peak behavior originates from the interfacial polarization, trapping and locking mechanisms. The abnormal dielectric tunability not only has some new physical meanings, but also has potential practical applications in detectors, sensors and so on. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
